In short
This episode of “Rest Is Football: Premier League Greats” focuses on Eden Hazard’s defining moments and why he stood out as a diminutive but exceptionally strong, creative attacker. Guests discuss his Chelsea years, his move to Real Madrid, and how ankle injuries and different coaching/playing styles affected his output.
Key claims
Hazard’s prime talent was “street baller” flair and individual brilliance that modern tactics/shape can suppress; at Madrid he struggled to be fully fit and couldn’t match the relentless pressing culture compared with Ronaldo. Notable examples include Hazard’s substitute appearance vs Diego Costa (a physical clash), his creative goal vs Arsenal, his solo goal vs Liverpool, and his equaliser for Chelsea vs Tottenham in 2015-16 that helped Leicester win the title.
Guests

Who has scored the most Premier League goals as a substitute? I know this one. Oh, do you? Oh, my goodness. Well, shall we let Alan go first then?
1:19Gary Lineker:Well, I'm going to go for Jermaine Defoe. He's cheating again. Someone's giving him the answers.
1:24Alan Shearer:Do you think that's the answer then, Mike? That's the correct answer. I knew that because I've seen it at the start of the week. Call it an honourable draw, but whoever gets the right answer for who's second, wins.
1:34Gary Lineker:It's got to be a chicken eater, surely. Al, you going? I'm going Giroud then, yeah. Alan, you are the winner.

2:17Alan Shearer:hello and welcome to the rest is football an episode of our premier league greats the moments that made them in this episode it's actually one of one of my favorite players for reasons that i'll come to later in the show he graced us by his presence for many years at chelsea he ended up going to Real Madrid. My first question about Mr. Hazard is, is it Eden or is it Eden? Because I think I've called him Eden, all sorts of things and I don't really know. Eden. I think it's Eden. I've kind of gone with Eden towards the end, but... Well, tomato, tomato. Same thing, isn't it? You said... Eh? You said, tomato.
3:05What?
3:05Gary Lineker:You say tomato or tomato? It comes from a song, you know. What song?
3:08Alan Shearer:You said tomato, I said tomato. You said potato, I said potato. What era is this, mate? Tomato, tomato. Oh, yes! I have heard it! Yes! I can't sing that. Who made me sing? Who sang that? Come on, someone in the room must know that. I got that last bit better here. Tomato, tomato, yes! Something like that. So we're going to go with Eden in this show. Eden? Because I'm in charge. Okay. Okay. I think he's a fascinating personality and a player that do you know you actually played against? No. But you're about to tell me. I did. For how long? In one match. We've just clipped up the start of it here.
3:52Alan Shearer:This is Eden Hazard coming on as a substitute. What's he doing here? In the early day. There he is. Oh, get off me! Look at that! Get up, will ya? That's not Eddie Hazard. Oh, that's good. That is Diego Costa. Oh, yes. Look at me. It's a free kick. And that is in the game that Hazard came on in. He tried to get me sent off, he did. He was just a bully, wasn't you? Look at that. It was trimmed back then. Was that your only good moment at Villa? And then, look, on he comes. And he was witnessing that from the sidelines, why you did that. vicious attack on that very, very quiet and timid Diego Costa.
4:37Alan Shearer:So how long did I play with him? Seven minutes. Seven minutes?
4:41Gary Lineker:So you know what happened? He actually went to the other side so he could just stay away from me. I was playing centre-half, I think. Oh, right, okay. Yeah. I played all right in that game, actually, I think. But Diego Costa was being... And he's such a nice guy off the field, you know that? On the pitch, he was just horrible for no reason. Tried to get me sent off. That's often the case, isn't it? Yeah.
5:00Alan Shearer:with players that go a bit bonkers on the pitch. You can see the strong arm though.
5:04Gary Lineker:Who's a foul? Foul! Look at yourself. I pushed him. It was a foul.
5:08Alan Shearer:Never. That actually wasn't one of our moments, but we'd found that. Oh, you found it for me. Is that the highlight of my career? It could be. I think it's been in podcasting personally. Right, a creative finding goal against Arsenal. I think we all remember this one. Oh, don't play it. Don't play it. Hang on. It's Coughlin, isn't it? that he barged off. Yes, I remember this. If ever you want to put a good slant on the word destructive, it's Kante. Nassar. Creative. And running at Koscielny. And Nassar's gone all the way and scored a beautiful, beautiful goal.
5:50Gary Lineker:Wow. See, they were just petrified of defenders. He could go both ways. They didn't have a clue where he was going to go.
5:57Alan Shearer:Do you think his final flurry there where he finishes it, do you think he meant to bounce it into the ground over the goalkeeper or do you think it was a missed kick? If it was Ozil, I would say yes, but I don't think he's meant to do that. Even though he's capable of doing that, I just think he's aiming to go across. Stubbed it into the ground. Did you see the Ozil technique? I know we're not talking about Ozil, but the little bounce into... That's what I asked. Yeah. But I don't think on that particular moment. No. In terms of talent, cool. For a couple of years, he was the best player of me.
6:25Alan Shearer:I mean, you know, the last episode, I think it was, was with Cristiano Ronaldo. And I think there's a slight difference in, probably not that much difference in ability, but a slightly different attitude between the two.
6:36Gary Lineker:I think maybe one of the frustrating things with Eden Hazard was that you knew he could do that. Could he have done it more? Yeah, at Madrid. At Madrid, definitely at Madrid.
6:46Alan Shearer:I think by that stage, he was really struggling with his ankle. I mean, he was in a bad way and he couldn't get himself fit. I think if he'd gone without injury in his prime, I mean... Yeah, if he would have went early doors. Did he give him, I mean, only he can answer the fact, did he give it himself the best chance to succeed at Madrid in terms of how he lived? I've got no idea. I think when he went to Madrid, he thought that talent would be enough and it wasn't married up by the injury as well, ankle injury. It was going to be difficult because playing against some Spanish teams, the press, you know, don't give you time on the ball.
7:21In terms of what he did in the Premier League, like I said, he's one of the best to ever do it. but I think when you go to Madrid and you're not fully fit he just wanted to play football like look at Ronaldo made sure he was pressing everything he did Hazard was more of a street baller wanted to entertain that was a difference he was such a strong runner
7:44Gary Lineker:with a ball wasn't he for someone being so small how strong he was to knock off the ball
7:49Alan Shearer:it's funny in football isn't it so many sports you have to be big and strong and distant but in football or people like Hazard or Maradona or Messi, you know, really pretty diminutive. Yeah. Ooh, diminutive. I love that word. Do you? Feel free to use it. So what's the context I could use it? Small. Oh, small. Diminutive. I use it this weekend. Okay. Get it in. Get it in match of the day. No, you don't do match of the day. Get it in your next broadcast for me. Next broadcast, okay. Okay. Because we used to do that. I do that quite a lot. My mates used to come in. Even the boys. My lads. They get a word in.
8:23Alan Shearer:They get a word in. You've done it. We've all done it. Get silly words in. I got bloody complaints from one of mine, though. I had to get the word in cappuccino, right? But why? You couldn't give me a word that was... No, my mates, we're out for dinner, and they go, we're probably having, like, cappuccino, and they've said, you've got to get cappuccino into mash the day. I'm going, oh, okay, no. So anyway, so mash the day goes, and then there's the section where you do the trails of what's coming up, like tomorrow night, mash the day two, blah, blah, blah, women's football on time, so whatever, reading through.
8:57Alan Shearer:And one of the times, there was tennis at Wimbledon or something, and I said, I just put it in the same. And then tennis is at two o 'clock, and after the tennis is playing, you can have a cappuccino and keep yourself awake from yesterday or two at night. That's a good way to get it in. Somebody complained to the paper or something, saying, oh, why is he, you know, he's not a man of the people, fucking cappuccino. Why can't he just say coffee? I love it. One of the things I've been enamoured for him. It was a... And I remember showing that guy's this person's complaint. I think it was actually a written letter to the BBC.
9:33Alan Shearer:That's what it was. Was it? It was in a newspaper, so I'll take that back. But yeah, it was a complaint. Oh, dear. Because I was too posh saying cappuccino or coffee. How ridiculous. Oh, dear. Honestly. Oh, part of the fun. Let's have a look at another great Eden Hazard goal. This one's against Liverpool.
10:01And Azar changing gear! And stealing it at beauty!
10:05Alan Shearer:Oh! That's better than the Arsenal goal, you know? That's brilliant.
10:09Gary Lineker:It's unbelievable, that is. What an ability that is, look. He's just trying to draw you in, knowing that he's going to knock the ball past you. Look at his close control, though. Oh, he's... Oh, it was brilliant. He's one of my favourite players to watch. That's what the game's missing now. This. This is what the game is missing. Yeah, individual beat four or five players. Yes! You don't see it very often, do you? No, I want to see more of that.
10:35Alan Shearer:Cool, don't we? He excites you. He gets you going. Yeah. I mean, to be honest, we never get an abundance of that. And we're probably saying when, you know, before he was time that, oh, what we need is a bit more Maradona and then Messi comes along. I'm not comparing Hazard with No but I mean just that he's a bit of a maverick wasn't he you know and he's everything now and we're pundits don't we it's all about shape and it's all just a bit I don't want to say robotic because everyone says robotic but I mean the way everything moves everything's in sync isn't it and if someone does something out of the ordinary it's almost like oh they shouldn't be doing that I think it's always been about that sort of thing is out of the ordinary I think it always has been Yeah, but he's been allowed to do that.
11:19I don't think players are allowed to express that anymore. It's how many players in the Premier League who does that? Where you can sit down and think, oh my God, I love watching you every week because I know you're going to do something ridiculous. Morgan Rodgers. No, but that's in a different way.
11:33Alan Shearer:Jeremy Dock who tries. No, but that's different as well, isn't it? Yeah. Because he'll go out wide. No, I'm talking about he will try and take someone on. Now, obviously he's not in the same league as Eden Hazard, but I don't... Do you think that's being coached out the game? I mean you're talking about doing your analysis and stuff but your analysis that's I mean what are you going to do what are you going to say on that oh you beat one individual individual brilliance whereas in shape you can explain things better so analytically it's easier yeah but we can still explain it you can say there's nothing that the defence could do because basically he's got in between the defence and midfield and they don't really know how to deal with that but because of the rest of the shape it allows Hazard to get on the ball there you know that's the way I would look it from the other way but I want to see more of that yeah don't we all we really do now at McDonald's a McDouble is$2.50 so you can get your gym gains on or just get lunch for only$2.50 get more value on the under$3 menu limited time only prices and participation may vary prices may be higher for delivery Pepsi Prebiotic Cola an original and cherry vanilla that Pepsi taste you love with no artificial sweeteners and 3 grams of prebiotic fiber.

13:25Alan Shearer:It's interesting. There always seems to be a debate about these two players, which one's the best. And I don't know why they go with these two because they're very different players' personalities, but they're both diminutive. And that's Eden Hazard and Mo Salah. They're different, aren't they? comparisons and stuff. I wouldn't say it's the same, but it's like Messi's football player. And Ronaldo. And Ronaldo, goal scorer. Different. Different. They're just different, aren't they? Yeah. Mo Salah takes more pride in scoring goals. Yeah. Hazard takes more pride in maybe creating or doing something magical.
13:59Yeah. So they're different players, I would say.
14:02Gary Lineker:Yeah, I would go along with that. I mean, his numbers, obviously, I don't compare with goals, but you've got more chance of getting the spectacular from Eden Hazard than you have more Salah. Not that he can't produce the spectacility as we've seen it, but more often. Yeah, definitely.
14:17Alan Shearer:Possibly, yeah. It's definitely room for both of them, I would say. He played under some, obviously, decent coaches, Eden Hazard, Mourinho and Conte as well. And this was the Champions title winning season in 2016-17. Costa. They have got wind of the fact he's about to be withdrawn. Here's Hazard.
14:47A goal befitting the champions. Oof, what about that for a finish? See, that's a celebration. Not that bit, the fit before, just like, look at me. Look at me. He does that little skip. He does that little skip.

15:01Gary Lineker:With the defender, because he has to give him that much space, because he doesn't know where he's going, Yeah. He probably thinks, right, I'm going to stop your gun on your right-hand side, which then shows him too much on his left and he was deadly with that as well.
15:13Alan Shearer:Conte made a real impact that season, didn't he, when he came in? Yeah. Yeah. He's a good coach though, Conte, isn't he? Well, obviously, yeah. There have been complaints about him, the way he runs his teams too much, so they can't replicate... Runs them as in fitness-wise. In fitness, runs them to the ground and then they have really good seasons, one or two seasons, and then the third season they just run out of steam. But he wins trophies, that's the most important thing. That was Pep Guardiola's first season, wasn't it? Ah. Wasn't it? When he came, yeah. Everyone was going Pep can't do what he did in Spain here, he can't build out from the back.
15:47Alan Shearer:Now look at him. I think he proved them wrong. So I think he proved them wrong, Al, don't you?
15:52Gary Lineker:Just a bit.
15:53Alan Shearer:Yeah. This is my favourite bit, I'm a bit to talk about. Any ideas what it might be? Over to you then, Gaz. Any idea what it might be? Eden Hazard's equalising goal for Chelsea against Tottenham Hotspur. Mikel. Chelsea playing with a desperation which would hint if you didn't know otherwise that they were chasing the title Costa away from Alderberrell Diego Costa Adi Lassa glorious goal Leicester's goal now ordinarily I'll be cheering Tottenham on in this game but under these circumstances Tottenham needed to win to stay in the title race in 2015 16 season when Leicester City Leicester City won the league and that goal made me cry Micah did it?
16:44Alan Shearer:Alan I cried brilliant yeah understandable they were two in a lot weren't they Tottenham and then then he did that and I will always love the little fella for it so what game would that have been is that a couple before the end when did you win the league? two or three games before the end of the season I think there were two more games left for Leicester Leicester could conceivably have lost it. But if Tottenham had won, it would have blessed to, I think we're playing, I think we've played Swansea or something. We won that game anyway, but we might, but there was no pressure. Or did they win or did they draw?
17:16When was it when he was at Vardy's house? Was that when he actually won? That was that game.
17:21Alan Shearer:So everyone's at Vardy's house. I'm at home watching with all my boys and my mate, JD, and we had a little film crew from the BBC as well. And, oh my word, when that went in, we were jumping up and down, hugging each other. It was just...
17:37Gary Lineker:Was it a late night?
17:38Alan Shearer:Oh, it was. We got a bottle open, got another bottle open. And we're hugging my boys. And it's so like, even George, who's a Man United fan, but I think the whole country, the whole country got behind Leicester at that point and everybody wanted them to do it, except probably Tottenham and Arsenal fans who were in contention to a degree. But, you know, such a miracle. that you know it was so beautiful even now like Leicester on the brink got you know suspension and might go down but you think to yourself would I swap the last 10 years apart from Aguero moment that's the best story isn't it it's the best in the Premier League I mean it's it's impossible that's why it's impossible three seasons before they're in League One I mean they you know managed to get up then got promotion into the into the Premier League stayed up by winning something like 6-7 of the last nine games of the season, which was perhaps a sign that something might be better the following season.
18:36Alan Shearer:Nigel Pearson lost his job that summer because something happened in Thailand and his lad was involved. And then they bring in Claudio and they win the league. When did you believe, though? I remember there was a goal against Liverpool. Remember when Vardy scored that? That was quite early. I believe when Leicester went to Manchester City and they won 3-1. That's when he... 3-1 away from home and I thought, we can actually do, but do you know what, it was weird. I know we're digressing here, but it's all because Eden scored that winning, that equaliser that made it possible. But all the last seven, eight, nine games, they were all switched to a Sunday, which was good because I didn't really want to, I started to get really nervous.
19:24Alan Shearer:And the closer it got, the more nerve-wracking it got because you suddenly thought, oh, if it doesn't happen now, it'd be so awful. and then and every game seemed to be like 1-0 and we were hanging on and 1-0 and 1-0 I remember watching a game in Barcelona around the telly with all the boys and we watched a game that was 2-2 that was really tight and then and somehow they just kept winning 1-0 and then he got right towards the end and then I still remain convinced that if Hazard hadn't scored that goal I'm still not sure Have you ever scored in Tumaboy? Yes I saw him at the Ballon d 'Or a few years ago and he was in the same hotel as us.
20:01Alan Shearer:We had a good chat with him and boy, what a sweet guy. What a lovely, lovely chap. And I said, man, you're my hero. I thought you bought a nice bottle of wine
20:10Gary Lineker:or a pint or something, did you? I won't get that far.
20:13Alan Shearer:Then you got your kit off, didn't you, on Match of the Day? Yeah, exactly. I mean, that was a downside to everything. Oh dear, fantastic. Anyway, let's go towards the latter stages of his Chelsea career. Final flourish, we could say.
20:32Azhar. Taking West Ham on, on, on and on. Astonishing. Absolutely amazing. The typical of the man.
20:43Alan Shearer:Oh, West Ham. It's another one of these fabulous individual goals that he's scored. This is what I'm talking about. Just weaving his way through. That's what we, this is what we missed. This. Well, there are so few players can do this and it's always been like that. Look at his feet there. Quick feet. How quick. Oh, that little touch. In. See you later. And then the finish round. How can you do that? Absolute genius he is. Oh. You could watch that all day, couldn't you? Brilliant. So quick. Fabulous stuff. Final words on Eden Hazard. I mean, it's a shame that his career petered out because of injury, I would say.
21:21Alan Shearer:Yeah, OK. I mean, his ankles were absolutely smashed. We miss him. It's not surprising he's got ankle injuries. It was easier the way he was. He turned and moved and getting kicked. Shall we try to get him on the pod? Oh, I'd love to get Eden on. Let's get him on the pod. Let's try that. Yeah? Let's try that, yeah. Eden, if you're listening, we've said very nice things about you. Please come on. Okay, that's it for this episode. Goodbye from me. Goodbye from me. Goodbye from me.
