Key claims
Brighton and young players could surprise but Champions League contention needs squad depth; Everton could finish around 7th/8th under David Moyes; top superstars often prefer Real/Barca for Champions League; Brentford’s record signing Sangaré will have lasting impact; Aston Villa won’t be in a relegation dogfight with Unai Emery; Newcastle won’t be relegated; Arsenal should add an elite striker (go get Álvarez) due to injury/niggles and Saka/Odegaard/Havertz availability; PSG would be strong in the Premier League due to freshness.
Notable examples
Sangaré at Brentford; Leeds goalkeeper Trafford; Arsenal trio Havertz/Saka/Odegaard; PSG’s squad rotation; England’s Mexico World Cup game; Gary’s Top Gear Argentina mini-car “Falklands” crisis story.

2:09Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to the Rest is Football question and answer episode with Alan Shearer, Micah Richards and me, Gary Lineker. Well, firstly, thank you very much for your questions. We've got a lot of them. Terry Thompson asks, what did you guys get up to after New York? And he wants to know if there's any nice golf courses. Alan?
2:28Gary Lineker:Hey, I never played once in the World Cup at all. You didn't even take your clubs, did you? I didn't even bring... You know what? I was just too stressed and bags and this. And then I thought, I've got to go for another... Stressed? I've got to go for another appointment because of the visa when I landed. And I just thought, oh, sod this. I can't be bothered I'm not so I didn't what are you laughing at I didn't bring my golf clubs luckily I didn't need them anyway because it was that too busy wasn't I so I was flying here there and everywhere and then spending time with you two mugs
2:59Alan Shearer:oh heart bleeds for you Alan oh my god get the violins out Micah for him will you he didn't play golf for a whole month in the best hotels wow
3:10Gary Lineker:well then when I actually after when I came after the World Cup I came back I played golf once I absolutely I didn't even have a practice and I nutted my first drive straight down the fairway I thought easy game this is golf and then I shanked my next shot and then I hit another good shot the same round I was useless
3:29Alan Shearer:Do you know what a shank is Micah? I don't know he's talking about nutted and shank I don't know are we talking about golf? I don't know I don't know While we're on this subject Ray Barnes any stories from New York outside of the show? I think we gave most of them, didn't we? We just told him, nice restaurants or nights out.
3:50Gary Lineker:What about when Micah flagged the tuk-tuks down and that half hour? Was that our first night? Yeah, first night. That was good. We were singing, weren't we, on the tuk-tuk? Oh, brilliant. People must have been looking at us thinking, well, the music blast, look at these fucking idiots around New York.
4:07Alan Shearer:It was$10 a minute. I think we spent about$500. He conned us, didn't he? Yeah, they hid them.
4:15Gary Lineker:He just said, he said,$15,$15. And then we all said, oh, yeah, that'll do. Thanks. And then we got out. We went,$15 a minute. Did we end up paying$350 or something? Yeah, something crazy. Yeah.
4:27Alan Shearer:It was just nuts. Right. Let's get some football questions now. Carl Dinham. Who do you think could be the surprise of the season, club and player? I think Brighton could have a good season and Hinshelwood could do well. well, Interwood certainly started well, as did Brighton. So I think they've gone beyond now a club that could be conceived as being a surprise. But is there a possibility of a well-run football club, I'll just add to this question, like a Brentford, possibly Brighton, that could challenge for a Champions League spot? Good question, Gass. I like that. The answer for me would be no, only because the squad depth.
5:12I think it's very hard for those players to perform consistently every single week. And that's why the bigger clubs always do it, because they can rotate. But in terms of, if it was a 20-game season or something like that, yeah, I think they could. But 38, I think the season's too deep.
5:29Gary Lineker:And with some of those teams playing in Europe on a Thursday night as well, I think you're right, Micah, with the squad depth, you know, I think it'd be very difficult for anyone to do that. I don't see that happening. I think what about Everton doing reasonably well this year I mean I don't I don't think they'll be challenging for Champions League but I think they could be in and around seventh or eighth something like that Everton do you think?
5:50Alan Shearer:I think they could well do I mean obviously they got tried and trusted in David Moyes he's done a really good job since he went to Everton you know they've got good players they've got a good start to the season a win on the opening day we didn't put that in the Monday episode but so we can mention that now but a very encouraging start I saw the Prime Minister was there alongside Peter Reid.
6:09Gary Lineker:Yeah, Reid, he's looking cool in his sunglasses again, Reid.
6:12Alan Shearer:Yeah, he'd have had his flares on as well. Don't worry about that. Right, Burnetti. Why the reluctance from top, top players to play in the Premier League? I mean, there are top, top players in the Premier League. I think I know what he's getting at. The superstars, the genuine superstars of world football, with a couple of exceptions, probably most notably Haaland, don't tend to sign for English clubs. they tend to still go, even to this day, to either Real Madrid or Barcelona. Can you see that changing? It's the size of the clubs and the history of those two. But the Premier League, with its financial status and its gravitas around the world, I've always thought that.
6:52Alan Shearer:Why, when there's a really, really big player up for grabs, the superstars, and Mbappe, for example, they go somewhere else. I think it's because we, as Englishmen, love the Premier League and it's our everything. I think they see the Champions League as, I don't know, Liverpool have won it a lot, but I would say because Real Madrid have won it so many times, Real Madrid is seen as a holy grail. And also the leagues are not, I won't say as a competitive, but what I would say is probably not as physical. So it gives them a better chance to be successful in the Champions League, which is the all-important one.
7:30Alan Shearer:Richard Haggins, which new player to the Premier League do you think is going to make the biggest impact?
7:37Gary Lineker:Well, the biggest impact over the weekend was Sangari at Brentford. When you look at transfer fees that have been paid for midfielders and you look at what Brentford have paid for him, 39, I think it is, and his performance at the weekend, I don't think it's going to be a one-off. I think it looks as if his style is perfectly suited to the Premier League and he's had a brilliant start. and they've obviously invested heavily in him, record signing. So they believe in him. So he's one without a doubt to watch.
8:07Alan Shearer:Micah, let's have one each. You go and then I'll go. You know what? I'm going to go with somebody different. I'm going to say, I'm going to go with Leeds, Leeds, Leeds. Trafford, the goalkeeper because Leeds have struggled with goalkeepers over the last couple of seasons. I thought Melier was going to be that guy to step up from the Championship to the Premier League. didn't quite work out for him. So I would go with Trafford at Leeds and he got off to a good start. I'd love to see him perform really well. I think he's so talented. I might go with Solis. Ooh, yes, I like it. I saw him in the Community Shield and then watched him again in the opening day of the season.
8:46Alan Shearer:I thought he's got a lot of game, very creative. His numbers are really good previously and could end up being a really interesting signing, but I'm often wrong. Rich Hacker, with Aston Villa's exits of Esri Consa, Luca Dini, Morgan Rodgers, Juri Tielemans and probably Ollie Watkins, do they now find themselves in a relegation dogfight similar to Spurs last season? No, not a chance. Not with Unai Emery in charge, surely. Not with Unai, not a chance. Villa will be fine. Obviously, they won't do as well as last season. But yeah, Villa will be top 10, I would say, at least.
9:24Gary Lineker:Yeah, different times I think for Aston Villa but I wouldn't put them in the relegation battle. I think they'll be too good for that and Unai Emery's too good for that. So a really tough start to the season for them but no panic.
9:38Alan Shearer:Tough for the fans though, isn't it? When they see so many players. Yeah, horrible. It really is. We talked about that on the Monday episode. I'm going to try and rattle through the questions because there's so many of you who have sent them in. Martin Gray, should the transfer window be closed before the season starts? Hell yes!
9:53Gary Lineker:Yeah. Yes! the transfer window is like designed I think to sort of bring everyone together because different leagues start at different times and
10:01Alan Shearer:well that's changed a little bit there's Bundesliga is later than the rest but you know La Liga's kicked off Serie A's kicked off it just doesn't make any sense and it's it's a bit unfair I think I think on a lot of clubs and managers as well how do you plan when you don't know what your team's going to be I think originally when they made the decision it was always wasn't it the end of August or the 1st of September whatever it was and that worked because so many of the leagues didn't start till then the only handicap league was probably the Premier League so it's a bit unfair on the Premier League because it was still open when all the others were shot but now with the other leagues generally starting earlier as well I wonder if they might change that it really does make a lot of sense Agreed I'm going to ask you this Alan but I know your answer will Newcastle be relegated this season that's come from Jack Davis what are you two fucking laughing for because we knew you'd get exactly that kind of response
11:03Gary Lineker:no they won't be relegated no I do think at times it'll be a challenging season and it is something very new and there's a reset and there's a lot of young players coming into the team this season young manager a lot of change so I think it will be challenging and we're going to have to be patient but I think we'll have enough to stay in the in the Premier League. I think you've got more than enough
11:26Alan Shearer:to stay in the Premier League. I don't think, you know, whether you can challenge for Champions League like you've done in recent seasons, apart from last year, I'm not so sure. But I think, no, I can't see you being dragged into any kind of relegation fact.
11:40Gary Lineker:My one concern would be maybe goals or creativity. I know Liverpool was good. They had a couple of really good goals. But that would be my concern. I wish I had a brilliant game. And if he can stay fit and keep up that type of form, then okay. But that would be a small concern. But I think we'll have enough to stay in the Premier League, yeah.
11:59Alan Shearer:Michael Wilson, question for Micah and Alan. And I'm going to remind you before you answer this, who pays your wages? What do you really think of Gary's cooking? Be honest.
12:13Gary Lineker:As much as we love to say a shit, but it's just not. Yeah, he is very good at it, isn't he, Micah? Marvellous. but the gnocchi oh my oh the pasta the spicy what's it called aranchada or whatever you call it
12:31Alan Shearer:amatriciana that's what you got that that's close enough that was pretty good effort let's have a half time snack and then we'll come back

15:46Alan Shearer:Is it going to be... I would definitely hope so. Okay. If rules apply. Yeah. I think so. I've got a thumbs up from Haz on the left. How long are we on stage for? I think we're doing... It's a game of football. We're doing two halves of 45 minutes with an interval of a halftime of 15, 20 minutes, something like that. I think in the first half, we're going to tell a few of our favorite stories. And the second half, we're going to have a QR code like Newcastle's new kit and people can ask us questions for the second half and I think it's going to be...
16:22Gary Lineker:There better be some red wine available because the stories in the second half could get tasty if there is.
16:27Alan Shearer:I'll bring the red wine out. I'm around all weekend. I'm also doing a show with Stanley Tucci. We've got the rest is history, the rest is politics, the rest is entertainment. All the teams are doing it. We're taking out the whole of Southbank for the weekend. So we're doing a lot of hours. Really exciting though. Here's a question from Adam Chamberlain. Would you three consider buying and running a football club together? And if you would, which club would you choose? Can I say, boys, Leicester is officially up for sale. So if you'd like to chip in a few quid.
16:59Gary Lineker:I haven't worked all my life to earn money to toss it away and buy in a football club.
17:06Alan Shearer:Especially Leicester. No, I think it's a good buy, Leicester, at the moment. If there's any super billionaires out there that want to invest massive amounts into our team, that would be more than helpful. But could you imagine running a football club and all this shit? We get a bit of shit occasionally anyway on here, let alone. Could you imagine? Oh, it's a hard job. I tried to run the club of YouTube buffoons at Depo Trio. It didn't give me zero help. I thought we did quite well that season. Much better than since you went on your own.
17:37You know what though, guys? I actually have been considering looking at a non-league club
17:45Alan Shearer:I swear I've got the book for it really what to try and do like a Wrexham no but I don't but you're a bigger star than Ryan Reynolds I don't want all the glitz and glamour though I want it to be like just normal a normal budget but giving players an opportunity and I've been thinking about it but then I looked at the finances I'm thinking he said He said, oh, it's expensive, isn't it?
18:10Gary Lineker:You need to be very, very rich to run it. I can see you being like an owner-manager. Yes, that's exactly what I want to do as well.
18:17Alan Shearer:Just run the whole caboodle. Mm-hmm. I've been looking into it. Have you? What sort of level are you talking about? Non-league, so we're talking... Yeah, but there's a lot of non-league levels. Well, what, step four, step five. Are you talking about a local under-8s football team on a Sunday? Or are you talking about conferences? I'm talking about, yeah, just below the conference. So like, so I think conference would be step, so you've got League 2, conference, and then you've got conference north. You've got one. Yeah, north and south. One below that, north and then south, just below that. Yeah.
18:55One of that sort of, yeah.
18:58Alan Shearer:Are there any for sale? Have you gone that far into it yet? I signed up to some non-league thing and it tells you all the clubs that are for sale or need investment. Wow. So. So watch his space. Okay. Interesting. Question from BMW. I don't think it's probably the car people, but anyway. Do Arsenal really need another striker? Just saw a stat that Havertz, Saka and Erdegaard have all started only three games together since December 2024. If all three can stay fit, that is a very dangerous trio. What's your take on that? I suppose the if is always stay fit. so you need a bit more depth in the squad, Micah.
19:37Alan Shearer:You said this on Monday. Yeah, I totally agree. I feel as though Havertz always picks up little niggles. Odegaard picks up niggles as well. And Saka, the amount of football he's played over the last three or four years. I think another body in there. Oh, obviously, he's still got Jokeres. I mean, can't disrespect Jokeres. No, no, he did a good job this season. But I just, I think if they want domination, yes, go get another forward. Go get Alvarez. That would be a statement of intent. If I was Man City, I'd be going back in for Alvarez 100%. Havertz has scored in the last four games that he's played and that's the first time he's scored in four consecutive games since he came into English football, Aaron.
20:15Alan Shearer:Is he?
20:16Gary Lineker:No, he's a very good player and I think in the big games, Arteta chooses him and I understand that. But Jokka has more than played his part. But I agree with Mike. If they want to stay around at the very, very top and try and dominate over the next three or four years, if they were to go and get that elite striker then I think it would be very, very difficult to stop if they had that.
20:38Alan Shearer:I was just going to ask you actually whether you think Arsenal will win the Champions League but before I do that, you'll see why. Ask a question and I hope I say his name correctly. Adialua Adegoke asks, would PSG win back-to-back UCL's Champions League if they played in the Premier League with the same squad that they have now? I think what he's saying is obviously you can rest players in France and all that and they're always fresh.
21:08Gary Lineker:Yeah, because a lot of their big hitters don't play full seasons. In fact, they only play a bit part during the season and league games, don't they? So a lot of them are fresh for the Champions Leagues. Is that Arsenal's main goal now as well? No, I don't think so. I don't think it'll be their main goal. I think their main goal will be to go again in the Premier League, but it'll be very high up on their list. They weren't that far away, were they, penalties? Very close. Yeah, I guess it would be a lot tougher if PSG were in the Premier League in terms of the Champions League as well, because to Premier League and Champions League, we know how physical it is and how demanding it is, the Premier League, and the French League is without doubt not that.
21:44Yeah, I totally agree with Al, but I think if you go man for man quality, they've got the two best full-backs, in my opinion, in Europe. Centre-half, they've got experience with a bit of someone who's come onto the scene in the last couple of seasons done really well in Paco alongside Mekinos. In midfield, I mean, the team is just different level. Yes, we didn't see the level and Jaunevis at the World Cup that we would like to see. And then you've got Kravoskelia, Due, Del Véle. Yeah, they probably would. I think it'd be harder, but I feel like they've got the best team. Can Arsenal win it
22:24Alan Shearer:this year? Yeah, they can, yeah. I think they can. I think they'll be one of the favourites. I think Barcelona would take some stopping now they've got Rodri in there there again with the brains behind the Spanish I mean look at Arsenal's
22:36Gary Lineker:squad now look what they've added to that already very good squad and what they've got in now I mean Gamera and Konza and others Solis so yeah they can they can do it there's no doubt about that
22:50Alan Shearer:okay interesting question here interesting in the sense that I'm not sure how he knows about this Stuart Swan Gary Lineker how close were you to flying out to Argentina for the Top Gear special ooh what's this about yeah well I'll tell you what this is about many years ago Clarkson calls me I know Jeremy reasonably well he's a Chelsea fan he loves his football he's a proper Chelsea fan and he called me up saying that they had this idea that eventually led to something quite a crisis in Argentina where they were going to do this whole thing that ended up being, if I try and remember right, this is quite a long time ago, a challenge between Argentina in little cars, minis, and it's a football game with a big ball, right?
23:48Alan Shearer:So you've got about four minis on one side and four on the other side, one in Argentinian colours, one in English colours, and it was supposed to be the rematch from the 1986. And they had this idea that I'd be hidden and then come on in a little mini at the end and score the winning goal and we get revenge for our defeat in 1986. So I am at Heathrow Airport and I'm sitting in the lounge and I suddenly get, and I've got like missed calls from my agent about three times, Jeremy Clarkson once, and the main director of the show, or no, it was actually, I think it was one of the big wigs at the BBC.
24:28Alan Shearer:So one of the head honchos, controller or controller of BBC One or something, saying, do not get on the flight. Do not get in the flight. Whatever you do, don't get on the flight. I'm thinking, what's happened? I'm in the lounge. So I had to go to BA and then I made a phone call. I don't know whether you've ever seen it, but because there was a number plate, I think, on one of the cars that they were driving around Argentina that sort of referred to the Falklands War or something. I think it, I can't remember exactly what the details were because I didn't know this question was coming, but it led to this thing and they were attacked everywhere.
25:05Alan Shearer:And they, it was terrifying for them to try and get out of the country. And I missed that, but thankfully I didn't get out there. And then the weird thing is, because I was, what's that called when they go on the lap with a stig right so i was gonna do that and um and then i get a phone call from from jeremy he went you fucking jinx me again i went why what and it was the day after he like had that whack when he whacked the guy over this with because his steak wasn't cooked enough or something i'm not quite sure so he called me up to blame me said i was the jinx so I never managed to make it onto top gear and we should probably finish with a proper football question considering we've finished with the World Cup we'll ask it about that Casper do you think this World Cup was the best in recent memory in my opinion it's been the best since Brazil some of the games were ridiculous stories were in real Cape Verde England Mexico etc etc
26:09Gary Lineker:I think there were some really good stories Cape Verde and goalkeeper and some of the games. But I wouldn't, no, I wouldn't say it was the best World Cup, no. I think Qatar was...
26:20Alan Shearer:I think Qatar as well because probably because it was in the winter when everyone's fresh and it's not as hot. I know it's Qatar, it was warm, but it wasn't, it was actually quite pleasant for football. I think for personal reasons, yes, you know, doing that England-Mexico game was just, I've not seen England, I'm not saying perform like that, but just, the enormity of the game and the way it ended. And there were so many stories within the game. It was like, you felt proud of that team. So yeah, for me, I would say for personal reasons, like doing the game, I'd go with this World Cup. What time for one more?
27:00Alan Shearer:And it's aimed at you, Micah. Michael Crosby. Has Micah decided whether Tottenham are better with or without Harry Kane?
27:13Alan Shearer:what a way to finish I suspect definitely not definitely not it's official it's official not better without Harry Kane absolutely not thank you once again for sending your questions we'll do one or two of these throughout the season so much appreciated but for now goodbye from me goodbye from me goodbye from me
