In short

Premier League greats episode focused on Harry Kane’s career-defining moments, his goal-scoring record, playing style, and possible future (including whether he’ll return to the Premier League to chase Alan Shearer’s record).

Guests

Michael Richards (host), Alan Shearer (former England striker), Gary Lineker (former England striker/pundit). They discuss Kane alongside personal anecdotes from their own playing careers.

Key claims

Kane’s early setbacks (multiple loans: Orient, Millwall, Leicester, Norwich) built his resilience; he’s an “all-round centre-forward” who drops into “pockets,” can play as a 10, and has elite passing plus finishing. They debate whether Kane will leave Bayern Munich and return to beat Shearer’s 47-goal Premier League record.

Notable examples

Kane’s first Premier League goal (vs Everton, scored after Ericcson’s steered-in assist); Spurs vs Chelsea 5-3 (Kane long-range solo goal, two goals, won a penalty); North London derby goals (Kane’s all-time Premier League/NLD top scorer talk); Leicester’s late penalty/Deeney-Vardy bench clip; Kane’s goals vs Arsenal and Crystal Palace; Kane-Son partnership combinations.

1:08Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to The Rest is Football with Michael Richards, Alan Shearer and me, Gary Linneke. We've got another episode of Premier League greats, the moments that made them. And in this one, we've got someone that was looking like they might challenge certain Alan Shearer's goal-scoring record at one point in the Premier League. I'm sure you've Germany and banging in goals for fun the great Harry Kane there's still time

1:34Gary Lineker:yeah there is he's going back

1:36Alan Shearer:he's not going to come back he could come back why what's the offer you I'm not sure you know exactly the amount 47 is it

1:49so realistically that would take him three seasons if he didn't come back well the way he's scoring goals now two probably

1:55Alan Shearer:if he played he had two 47 he would have But why would he come back just to beat his record? I would, definitely. Go over there, win some trophies, come back. What is he now? He's 32? Yeah. Yeah. So if he does two more seasons there. That's 34. So you think he'd score that amount of goals when he's 35, 36, 37? Three seasons, yeah. Not just Danny Welbeck's still scoring goals, isn't he? Not anything like enough to challenge the likes of... 47 free seasons, he could do that. depending on what team depending on what I just can't I can't see why he would leave Germany he's playing for a great club he's scoring a goal a game on average if not slightly better at present he's you know unless for family reasons homesick something like that but God he'd be treated like a king there they must love him would you not come back now

2:49Gary Lineker:great discussion lads I'm enjoying this I would definitely come back imagine having that tag just for that Premier League top goal scorer. It's got a ring to it. I'm sick of hearing it. This bell's going to so much work. It's just showing me some respect. I really hate you. Oh, hello. How you doing, mate?

3:12Alan Shearer:But the thing is, you know what will happen? He'll come back and Ireland will go past him anyway. Wow. In fact, probably before he comes back. Because he's not going to come back now. He's not going to let him go. Are they Bayern Munich? No, not now. Not now. I mean, you know, if he goes to them and says, I desperately want to go home. I'm a bit homesick. Strange. But then where's he going to go? He's aged, right? So realistically now, we're talking at least 33, probably before he went. Yeah. Maybe 34. Who's going to spend a fortune on a player? There's no, you're not going to get anything back.

3:45Alan Shearer:Spurs? Spurs. Spurs. But that would be two Spurs, wouldn't it? To do that and pin all the hopes on someone in their mid-30s. It's guarantee goals, isn't it? I'm not sure it is when you get to... No. No, no, it's not. I mean, he could do. He could do what Lewandowski's doing. He could do what Ronaldo did. But don't forget Lewandowski's playing for Barcelona. I mean, I don't want to be rude to Tottenham, but we all know in real terms, you finish in the league table roughly equivalent of your spending power and what you buy. I mean, you can talk about great coaches and they prove things and they have good spells at clubs.

4:27Alan Shearer:But generally, it's usually around however much you budget for. And Tottenham, on that scale, they're a mid-table club. And I play for them. I really like Tottenham. And they're a well-run business. But they're not run as a football club. So would they be good enough to do that at that stage? I cannot say it. I think your record's safe until Haarlem beats it. And if Haarlem does stay... Will Haarlem be here long enough?

4:53Gary Lineker:I'm not sure he'll be here long enough. Well, it depends.

4:54Alan Shearer:If something ever happens with 115 charges, if anything ever does happen with that, and then they suddenly get knocked down to lead one or two, which I don't think anything like that will happen. But if something like that happened, then he'd probably leave. And things would change. But given a fair run, if there's not a relegation punishment for Manchester City, if there's any punishment at all, then I think Harlan without any major injuries will at some point beat your and I just want to be alive

5:33Alan Shearer:someone better hurry up because that's going to be one great episode of the rest of this football I'd love that yeah

5:41Gary Lineker:what a player he is do you know what I like about him yeah he's had to do the hard work first as in it didn't it didn't work for him at the beginning. He had to go out on loan, had to work really hard.

5:55Alan Shearer:He went to Orient, Millwall, Leicester and Norwich.

5:58Gary Lineker:Exactly, which tells you how... You know he couldn't get in the Leicester team. Yeah, I know. It's crazy, isn't it? When you think, I mean, his attitude to be knocked down, to be told, not quite good enough, we're going to send you out on loan. Actually, not quite good enough on loan, we're going to send you somewhere else. And then to come back from that and do what he's done and doing is remarkable and then to not only to do it in the Premier League and in Germany to be England captain to do it at the highest level to score and get golden boots and all of this it's

6:31Alan Shearer:I've got so much respect and time from him and he's such a top guy he seems as well really I saw a clip recently you must have seen it we've all seen it but I tend to see it a lot because it's obviously it gets thrown at me a bit have you ever seen the goal where Leicester get a penalty in the last minute and it's basically battling for to go up or to reach the playoffs I think and Leicester get a penalty and it was a dive to be honest the keeper saves it the ball goes right up the other end of the pitch balls crossed Troy Deeney scores that famous goal and there's a there's a little cut on there where on the bench for Leicester of Vardy and Kane oh right yeah couldn't even get on in the Leicester's team and then finally missed the penalty.

7:21Alan Shearer:Knock up. Knock up. He won the penalty although he definitely dived. He definitely dived. Even as a Leicester man I recognise a dive when I see one. Just on that is it dove or dived? Because I've heard people say dove. Is that a word? He dived. Yeah. Dove. Oh he dove. I'm like That's a soap. I thought I dove.

7:47No but is dove a word? Come on It is, you see, it is a word. Other soap brands are available. Unless you want to sponsor us. And then they're definitely available. What? Dove is a word? Yes, dove's a word. He dove head person. Yeah, yeah. He dove. So why do people say... It's the past tense. Yeah, but he dived. People just say dived, don't they? No, he dived. Yeah, but he dove. Do you know what I mean? Well, technically... He dove, that's what I'm saying.

8:16Alan Shearer:He definitely dove. You're the brains in here. No, I'm not. You definitely don't go, he doved. Okay, he dove, past tense, and he dived. Why do people say he dived then? Because that's past tense. Because it's the male version of it. It's she dove, he dived.

8:40Can someone explain that? They're just both.

8:43Alan Shearer:They're abnormally. They're both. There are certain terms that are like that, that both things are... Yeah. Oh, okay. He shined, he shone. There's one. Ah, yes. There you go. So I still have the brains. So you have the brains. Yes. Not. Come on, because they do. I'm like, hmm. It doesn't sound like it, does it? Yeah.

9:08Alan Shearer:This episode is powered by Fuse Energy. Before we kick off, a quick pre-match warm-up from Fuse. Today's question is, which club recorded the most clean sheets in the Premier League last season? Was it A, Manchester City, B, Liverpool, C, Aston Villa, or D, Arsenal? I'm going to play reverse psychology here. Why would you put Villa in there? Is that your answer? No, it's not. I'm going Liverpool. Liverpool. That was a quick change there, wasn't it? Alan who are you going for Villa Mike has sucked you in there hasn't he yes that is not the answer the answer the team that recorded the most clean sheets of which neither of you even gave him a mention you know what I know it I don't know it it's Arsenal because Raya got the golden glove didn't he correct it's Arsenal with 13 clean sheets the best sides don't give things away it should be the same with your energy get more than just lower rates at FuseEnergy.com slash football.

Full terms and conditions at FuseEnergy.com. How important do you think it is for players to maybe go out on loan when they're young? Particularly, I suppose, particularly for a club where you're not getting into the first thing. You're just off the plane, don't you? You didn't have to go on loan, did you? Well... Because you were too good. Well, I did in the end. Did you? You never went on. I never went on a long, yeah. Yeah, I went on a long to Fiorentina, didn't I?

10:47Oh, yeah. Where I played against Harry Kane. Again, we won that game. You played against Harry Kane? No, I was playing up against... I was playing right back. Chadley, I think it was. What was that in Europa? Europa League, yeah. What round? It might have been quarters. Oh, really? Yeah, we got... Then we went to Seville and got absolutely battered. Well, the Spanish clubs won that competition year in, year out. It was so good.

11:15Alan Shearer:All sorts. Seville and Villarreal was so good around that time. Right. Our first moment of... And there are a lot of moments for Harry Kane. There's a lot of great goals in there. That's his first goal in the Premier League. Ericsson. And it's steered in. Harry Kane, who's got into some good positions in this game. First of many. Squad number 37? Yeah. I don't remember him. How many goals you've got to score before you get the number of your choice? It would depend though. Because you lot was horrible though. You know, you senior pros. What do you mean? You lot was horrible. What do you mean? How?

11:55You couldn't come in what cars you wanted. You couldn't get what number. You had to clean boots and all that. Well, that's everyone's an apprentice, you mean? It was nonsense. Absolute nonsense. How am I cleaning someone's boots and I'm better than them? Makes no sense.

12:07Gary Lineker:See, I totally disagree with that. No. It was the best thing ever, the old apprenticeship. Was it? Yeah, cleaning the boots. Cleaning the boots? Cleaning the dressing room. Cleaning your boots would have been...

12:18Alan Shearer:No, cleaning the pro's boots. Yeah, it's good for you. Cleaning, washing the dressing rooms, cleaning the loos. Respect.

12:24Gary Lineker:No, no, you can have respect, but I'm not cleaning your boots. Well, if you were a 16, 17-year-old, you should be doing that. Ooh. It's like military service. Ooh, is it?

12:35Alan Shearer:You used to have to do it. You didn't want to do it, but you have to do it. I mean, nowadays we don't have military service. It might come back. Who knows? They're talking about it. No, I didn't. No. I don't mind getting the boots ready and all that sort of stuff and sorting out the kit and all putting it up, hanging it up. That's like a pleasure. But cleaning someone's boots. Cleaning your own boots. You know what I mean? Clean your own boots. You know, I was in charge of cleaning the first team dressing room at Leicester. Even though the training ground was 10 minutes away, we used the dressing room at Filbert Street.

13:04Alan Shearer:so my job was basically clearing up the kit and mopping the thing clean the looes and all that sort of stuff and add spics back but in those days far different from now i say once again now micah that you only have one training kit which you wore in the week and then at the weekends it will get laundered and washed so and they used to have these hanging baskets and the and i had to find the number on each kit to put on the appropriate hanger. And then we'd put it in a drying room overnight. So if it'd been raining or something like that, blah, blah. Can you imagine what it was like? Someone's like slip of boxes or whatever.

13:44Alan Shearer:And the socks used to just stand up on their own. And the skid marks, mate. And you didn't know which ones were modern, which ones were. Oh, mega. So, I was so... And the stench in the... It stayed with me forever. The stench of the kit by Friday when they'd trained all week. It was, I mean... No. But you know what? It made me hard.

14:13Gary Lineker:That was the last time you were hard, wasn't it? Yay! Oh,

14:19Alan Shearer:here we go. Oh, it went on to the dangly leg.

14:28Gary Lineker:So, Micah doesn't like the idea of cleaning boots anyway. No, it's too good for him. No, I know. It's spoiled, you see. They're sporting nowadays. The kit, our irony kit, all of that, socks perfectly, but boots. Iron socks? I would, yeah. Iron the socks. Make sure they're all crisp. Yeah, I don't mind that. Is that a thing, ironing socks? Where's this going? No, I just wondered. For your kit, yes. Iron them. I don't mind that. Yeah, all right. Washington, Ireland, no problem.

14:56Alan Shearer:Yeah. All right. Our second moment. It was almost a statement-like performance, I think. It was when... It was a great game when Spurs beat Chelsea by, I think, 5-3. Harry scored a couple, got an assist, won a penalty. But, you know, look at him. Harry Kane! Oh, what a goal! One of their own! I mean, he is one of the great long-range finishers, isn't he? Another number, 18. 18, he's getting closer to what he wants.

15:30Gary Lineker:That's just a brilliant solo goal, that. It's got everything about it, hasn't it? The balance and the power and the pace and the ability to go past players with the ball and protect the ball and then get your shot away like that into the corner. Oh, look at that one. It's the second goal. Yeah, I remember that one. What a touch that is. Look at the position he's in though. His first goal is going one side and then he's going into the pocket. Let me say the pocket. Are you all right with that? Get a space. Yeah. And then the finish. That's when you talk about... So Thierry Henry was the first one, really, that I saw who would not stick in his position so he'd be out of the left, wouldn't he?

16:10And then Harry Kane, the way he's been able to develop his game where he's not just a number nine. He's nine and a half, isn't he? He's nine and a half, yeah.

Read the full transcript

16:17Alan Shearer:I mean, he can play 10. He's been playing for 10 for Bayern Munich quite a bit this season. And it works when you've got pace on the wings.

16:23Gary Lineker:It works, by the way, when you've got his ability to pass it the way he does.

16:27Alan Shearer:Such a good passer. I mean, as an all-round centre-forward, he's got, I would say the only thing that you could probably go, if he had a bit more pace and electric. I mean, he's not slow, but he's not rapid. I mean, could you imagine if he was lightningly quick as well? Like Haaland when Haaland's on the march. I don't think he would have the brain though. I think because he's not quick, that's why he's got such a good brain. He has got incredible football. That's why he drops into them little pockets there. He's so good. I mean, he does. And it's hard to defend that. You see where the defenders were there.

16:59It's like, what do you do in that situation? Because he's playing at a number nine, but he's going over the left. Do you stay?

17:06Gary Lineker:Well, especially if you've got someone who's prepared to run past him.

17:08Alan Shearer:You need that, which England didn't really have in the Euros until, or Southgate didn't choose to play that way. I hear he was struggling a little bit fitness-wise. But he's back now. Oh, he's back to his absolute best, which is, let's hope he stays that way for England, for the World Cup. By the way, just while we're on this topic, have you spoken to Gareth Southgate? I saw him at Paddle the other day. Did I say that on the pod the other day? No. No? I saw him at Paddle the other day. And he blanked you again? No, he didn't blank me. I don't know if I'm in my own head, but because of the situation at the time, and he was quite frosty with you, wasn't he?

17:45Yeah. So I've still not said hello to him since. I saw him in a coffee shop, remember? He's probably thinking why you're so off with him. Maybe that's... Maybe, yeah.

17:53Alan Shearer:Maybe you've got to approach... I mean... What did he say? We never said anything, anything bad against the Carousel's game. You called them shit, didn't you? No. You said they were shit. It's all your fault. Were they? In the game that we were talking about, were they? Yes. Yes. There you go. I mean, you could have said a different... You know, you could have said they were really, really poor or terrible or awful or shit. What's the difference? I'm just scared of going up to them. Because it's a swear word. Oh, you can't say a swear word. It's just letters in a different order that spell a swear word.

18:26Shit, you know, it's not exactly... Shall I go up to him next time I see him and just say... And it was truthful. Sorry, it wasn't me and Al, it was Gary. Fine. Fine. Sir.

18:40Alan Shearer:Sir, Gareth. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. I'm sure he's okay. I mean, he's not a child. I know, yeah. I mean, we're in a world of football. We know people talk about people in football.

18:51Gary Lineker:Yeah, he was a pundit himself. He knows what it is.

18:55Alan Shearer:But why was he fostering with you then?

18:56Gary Lineker:I don't know. Maybe he didn't like what I'm saying.

18:58Alan Shearer:I think what happens as well is, don't forget, right, you're the England manager and you're in this bubble with all your team. You've got Harry Kane there and all. Everyone's around and then you do a press conference And you sit there and the journalists, who don't like to say it themselves, go, did you hear what Lineker and Richards and Shearer said about your team? And they just said, they'll say, they said you were shit. And then it's them, oh, why are they constantly having a go at us? It's with no context on what we've said about Gareth in the past and all these sort of things. And that's what happens.

19:35Alan Shearer:So he, by his own admission, he says he never listens to any of this stuff. So he wouldn't have actually heard our discussions and how, I think, fundamentally fair we were. So I think that's what's probably happened there. But next time I see him, I'll run away. Not at all. He'll be fine.

19:59Alan Shearer:This episode is brought to you by Whoop. In the modern game, of course, there are a lot more games and that feeling of being slightly off by Monday. And that's how it shows up. 22:06Alan Shearer:Right, let's go on to our third moment. Oh, this great hit against Arsenal. This is a North London derby. What a massive opportunity for Tottenham this is. And here is Harry Kane for Tottenham. Oh, what a goal! A classic Derby goal from Harry Kane! Catch him if you can!

22:29Gary Lineker:Oh, what a goal this is. Isn't it a beauty? Oh, my word. Again, look where he is though, guys. I know. I mean, he has no right to shoot from there. No.

22:39Alan Shearer:Especially with that mask on. Which he takes off. What number is he now? Ten! Ten! Oh, he's spotty.

22:47Gary Lineker:You just see him even having a little glance, didn't you? Oh, what an angle, eh? Brilliant.

22:54Alan Shearer:Top scorer in North London Derby. Top scorer of all time in North London Derby. All time in Premier League history. Premier League. Yeah. 14. Wow. It's not bad, eh? Yeah. It's not bad at all. Did you score for a few in a derby or not? Yeah. Did you? Scored two in the semi-final of the FA Cup, for starters. Excuse me? 1991. Boom, boom. Have some of that? What, you asked? Go on, dude. I just answered. It's very aggressive. You said no shit.

23:21Alan Shearer:I can yeah I scored a few against the Gooners I scored two at Highbury actually for Leicester one did you? when I was a kid yeah and Tony Woodcock scored two and the keeper Pat Jennings was in goal for Arsenal and this sticks in my head like it's weird the odd thing sticks in your head I was through one on one I was coming in from like a Thierry Henry position with absolutely no resemblance to Thierry Henry whatsoever in terms of my ability but as I came in It was on my right foot. And Pat Jennings came out. And I thought, fuck me. He's miles out. He's positioning so bad. He's left me the whole goal to shoot at.

23:57Alan Shearer:So I just went, bosh. And as I went to hit it, he'd done me. He'd done me. And he started to dive across. I thought, shit. And he gets a hand on it, but not quite enough. And it just trickled in. So he dove. And then Woodcock scored in the 95th minute. No, I scored. No, I said he dove. Oh, he dove. Yes. Yes, I didn't die. He died. He died. I'm going to use it. I'm going to try and do it this weekend. Use it. Use it when you're soaping yourself. That's a bird. What a strange episode this is. What a strange episode. The complete striker. Yeah. The complete, I think, in terms of, look, this is him.

24:41Alan Shearer:Oh, yes. This is against Crystal Palace. He got two and Bale got the other two in this game, actually. I mean, come on, goodness me. He's so accurate.

24:54Gary Lineker:Do you know, he's starting that, right? And for him then to get into that picture and have that into that position, I should say, but then have the picture already in his head and how he's going to hit it and where he's going to put it. You've got like that to think of that. I mean, look where he starts off from there and follows it. so he already knows where the keeper is

25:16Alan Shearer:he had a little look up as the balls come into him as well yeah I mean

25:21Gary Lineker:what a goal

25:22Alan Shearer:he kisses his wedding ring

25:25Gary Lineker:it's not like his celebration his celebration is as bad as yours as bad as bad we need to take him out with this conversation as bad

25:37Alan Shearer:honestly if you're a player that say he's full back so you're not going to score that many goals. So you probably think, I need to do something special. But if you score goal after goal after goal after goal, like Shearer and Kane, then you've got to come up with too many things. You didn't have anything. No, the celebrations weren't really... I mean, we celebrated goals.

26:02Gary Lineker:A lot of the time you were two arms in the air, weren't you?

26:04Alan Shearer:Yeah, I don't know. I never had anything thought out about any kind of celebration because nobody did back then. So what's your celebration all about? I haven't got a clue. Oh, is it just like?

26:17Gary Lineker:It's all about me. I haven't got a clue. Just did it when I was young. And then it just carried on? Just happened, yeah. Just carried on. There you go. It is iconic though, isn't it? Even though it's shit. But it is iconic though. I remember playing one of the striker back in the day. You're Shearer. Dyingly, what it was.

26:34Alan Shearer:See, I'm going to have a press conference now, right? So I'm going to be with Alan Shearer and the press goes, do you know what? Mike thinks you're shit. They wouldn't even add in the celebration. Take that bit out, yeah. That's how they do it. He had that great partnership, didn't he, with Heung-Min Son over many years where they assist each other and they'd score off each other's passes, etc.

27:02Oh, that's a lovely ball. Kane to Son for four. Kane and Son and Spurs at their very best.

27:12Gary Lineker:This is one of the passes that he plays for Son, was like typical Harry Kane, isn't it, when he can go deep and we're talking about when he's got players running off him. That's a great finish, yeah. Because he can only go there to score, really, can't he? This pass. Oh, this is what I'm talking about. He's got such a great passing range as well. I mean Them two together though Yeah Dangerous Was it 37 goals And assists That got together In one season I think Goal combinations Are called Yeah I know Do you think I think Harry Kane Would have made A brilliant midfield player When the game's open Yeah I feel as though Passing wise Yeah definitely Passing wise for sure But you still have to Get around the pitch Don't you To make that space You know Well he drops deep Yeah but that's because that's because he's not supposed to be there so everyone else is already marking their man and he's allowed to get that's why he's so intelligent that's why he's so good I always think it's important

28:14Alan Shearer:to have a partnership and it's so helpful if you can trust each other and stuff I mean I would pick out Beardsley for me with England and Alan Smith when I played for Leicester that was the longest spell I'd had any club was at Leicester so I mean Smudger had a really good relationship Everton with Graham Sharp.

28:36Gary Lineker:Yeah, I was lucky as well. I had Chris Sutton at Blackburn, which worked straight away. Me and Les Ferdinand. We had one season together, me and Les. Is that all? 96-97, and we scored 49 goals between us. How many did you score? 48.

28:54Gary Lineker:It was, I don't know how many, I can't remember how many, but it was 49 between us and the assists, and I think he missed two months. Can I ask you a question

29:03Alan Shearer:You know, about your career. Were you ever not the highest goal scorer? Aside from until once you became a regular, not your first couple of years.

29:12Gary Lineker:Yeah, not. Last season at Southampton I was, but the three or four before that I wasn't. No, that's when you were a regular. And there was a couple in Newcastle when I was out injured for a while. Oh, for the season, yeah. Talk about legendary status with Harry Kane, but you, the statue, when did you know you was getting it? It was the old chairman that did it, Freddie Shepard.

29:31Alan Shearer:Do you know when he did it? He did it in his last year. and he said, this is how you're moving now. Statue had more face than me. Yeah. Didn't they lose?

29:44Gary Lineker:Yeah, it was just outside the ground under Mike Ashley's hero. Then he left and then they moved it back inside. Just outside the ground. That's a bit sad, Dan. That's a nice moment though, isn't it? We've not talked about the statue. Harry might have one at Spurs soon. Harry that's what I mean I tell you what

30:04Alan Shearer:he'll get one at Wembley if we win the World Cup just a bit yeah and he'll be captain just a bit it's not impossible good shout good shout yeah on that note what a beautiful way to finish this episode of the rest of football goodbye from me goodbye from me goodbye from me
