Spain are said to be unbeaten in 32 matches across competitions. Goalkeeping segment contrasts Unai Simón’s steady Spain role with David Raya’s Arsenal form, and praises Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vosinha’s saves and offside “get away.”
Notable examples
Yamal’s right-to-left cut-and-shoot pattern; Cape Verde’s bench emotion after scoring; Vosinha’s offside moment.

0:28Let's talk about a condition many people haven't heard of, and it turns out it's more common than you'd think. Peyronie's disease, or PD for short. PD can happen when scar tissue builds up under the skin of the penis. This can cause a curve or the bump during an erection, and for some men, lead to pain during intimacy and may impact mental health. It may also lead to anger and frustration, depression, lower self-esteem, and even withdrawal from sexual activity and physical intimacy. Because of this, some men could feel embarrassed or reluctant to talk about PD. The actual cause of PD isn't always known.
1:04In some cases, it may be linked to a minor injury or repeated injuries during sex or other physical activity. The good news is, PD is treatable. If you notice a curve with a bump, a trusted urology specialist can help diagnose it. and walk you through your options, including non-surgical treatment. 2:04Hello and welcome to The Rest is Football on today's show. So, well, we've got lots of guests. We've got Mo Gilligan, we've got Ali McCoy, we had Joe Cole, and also back in the UK, and together in Micah's garage, we had Micah and Joe Hart. And there was a lot of goalkeeping stuff to talk about and some great performances from minnows like Cape Verde. So much to discuss. And don't forget, if you'd like to watch the show, you can see it on Netflix.
2:37As you can already tell, the comedy on this show is really shit. So, no pressure, really.
2:45Mo Gilligan:No pressure at all, don't worry. But a warm welcome. You're in the presence of a triple BAFTA winner. I know, I know. Three Netflix specials. If you want to watch one afterwards, you're more than welcome. You're a football fan, though? I'm a massive football fan, Gary. Surprise me. Tell me it's Arsenal. Do you know what? I'll be honest. Do you know what it is with the World Cup? I'm still on the high of Arsenal winning the league, right? So I think right now I feel like I'm speaking for a lot of Arsenal fans where we really just care about Arsenal. Even in this World Cup, we just don't want our players to get injured, get burnt out.
3:23Mo Gilligan:Yeah, so that's where I'm at. I'm only really rooting for the Arsenal players that play for England. Really? You're not bothered about the national sports? So you're here talking in our show, talking about World Cup football, We don't really know. I know, but let's be honest. No, but we know what will happen. If an Arsenal player misses a penalty, it's just going to come back to Arsenal. Do you know what I mean? Yeah. Because they call us the bottlers and all that kind of stuff. Not anymore. They can't do that now after you've won the league. They can't do that anymore. My WhatsApp says otherwise.
3:51Mo Gilligan:Yeah. Now, you're not necessarily cheering on just one team at this World Cup, not just England. No, so my fiancée's from Brazil. And for the first time ever... Did you just pick a fiancé from Brazil because they're a good team to support? Best team, innit? Yeah. But she's from Brazil and the first time ever we watched a game together. So we watched Brazil against Morocco. And, you know, Morocco were playing really good. And she was like, she was speaking in Portuguese and stuff. And I don't understand what she was saying. But at one point when Morocco scored, she poked me in the nose. Like, she just poked me in the nose.
4:28Mo Gilligan:I was like, I didn't play. conceding the goal so yeah as they say happy life happy wife so I really want Brazil to do well so I don't get poked in the nose basically but if they go on and win it that would be great that would be fantastic not the next game though obviously against I wouldn't have thought you'd win it oh yeah maybe they play Scotland yeah so maybe not go easy on me after that go easy on me after that they can do alright you played in soccer right I played in soccer I played with some Brazilians yeah I played with So basically, there was like, Robbie Keane said, Mo, we're going to play centre-back.
5:04Mo Gilligan:I don't really like playing centre-back. Do you know what I mean? Normally, he put me on the right side, cut him with the left, Kai Osaka. Do you know what I mean? That's the vibes I feel like I've got in my head. In your feet? The feet, yeah. Different story. Mo can play. Mo can play. I can vouch for him. I'm all right. I'm all right. Some of the celebrities, like, they look like you've thrown a manine in board when you play. He can play. No, I'm all right. I can't name names. No, but you know what? Out of all the celebrities, you're up there. I appreciate that. You can give me your bank details later and then I'll give you the money back for saying those kind things.
5:38Mo Gilligan:But no, when I played, Robbie Keane was like, look, can you play centre-back? Because you need someone that can actually play football at the back. And I was like, yeah, but it depends who I'm going to be with. And then he's like, well, we'll play with Berbatov at the back. And then, like he said, in Catherine, Roberto Carlos. And at one point... It's reasonable. Ali, at one point, yeah. The stand doesn't root up there, to me. But at one point I was so in the game, I was so focused, I forgot that. I know I'm there for the entertainment, do you know what I mean? Like, they get our celebs in so we can get nutmegged or something like this, innit?
6:08Mo Gilligan:And then it becomes a bit of a meme. So I forgot, I thought I was a real footballer. And at one point I said to Cathy, I said, Hey, Cathy, drop back a little bit. Drop back a little bit. I lost myself. He says something in Portuguese and I just nodded and said, Yeah, all right, all right, cool, cool, cool. How did you say Portuguese? Fuck off. What is that? It's something. I could ask my fiance. She says it sometimes. I'm sure. We've moved over to the big screen because we've got two more faces to join us. Not just Micah Richards, but alongside him, Joe Hart. All right, lads. How we doing, guys?
6:45I brought company today. Have you been working? No, I didn't work today. A day off today. You've been working today. I'm light work at the moment. I'm coming next week. Next week's my busy week. From beautiful sunny Salford, Meeks. So they'll be jealous in that New York studio. Look at him sat there all smug, with her legs crossed and all that. He's like, no, he's talking about his Brazilian girlfriend already. Gary winking at the camera. Koisi, look at him, he's set on this now. He's only his second appearance. I am, I'm...
7:16Mo Gilligan:James, I drink red wine now, bro. Meeks, last night... When Kersi leans into me and goes, what a gig this is, by the way. It's unbelievable. By the way, his Brazilian girlfriend's going to be sort of disappointed in Wednesday after the game. It's unbelievable.
7:41Why are you here, Mo? Are you promoting something, Mo? Why are you here? Hey, there's only one diversity in Kuo
7:48Mo Gilligan:in this game.
7:53Mo Gilligan:It was even me or you, man. Well, Andy Peters, it was going to be one of us. How did we end up with both of you? It was going to be one of us. Come on, man.
8:07I think we should probably talk about a bit of the football at some point. Did you watch Spain, Micah? Micah and Joe, did you watch the Spanish play earlier on? We did. We did. Yeah, I'll let you go first. We probably want to talk about Lamin the dream. How good was he? Cool. He lit the place up. Exciting. You need people like him in this World Cup, don't you? For him to be fit and firing and scoring in that first ten minutes, what a big tournament for him. I just think he's just got... He plays with freedom, doesn't he? You know, if you saw him in the first five minutes, you see when he barged the guy off the ball and he knew straight away that he was ready for the game.
8:47A few bad touches, I think he was being a bit sloppy, but he was so confident. He gives them something so different in terms of what they've had in the first game. I felt in the first game they played a little bit too slow, everything was ticker-tacker, but when he plays it just gives them a different dimension. I'm glad he's back fit. I'm looking forward to the conversations that are going to go on from now on. All he does is play on the right, cut in on his left and shoot. It's so easy to stop, it's not. He does it all the time and he had a few sighters as well. I think he's, I think personally, he's the next one, the next big one, the next coming, if you like.
9:26I mean, he's the first player in history to start a match at both the UEFA Euros and the FIFA World Cup while aged 18 or younger. I think he turns 19 very soon. But Ali, he's the one, isn't he? He's a different level, got it. I'll tell you lads, I saw him, was it the semi-final thing it was the Champions League they're playing into Milan right and it was the old Barcelona stadium so they moved and our vantage point was right on the 18 yard line and he absolutely terrorised that DeMarco honestly it was unbelievable and it'd be fair to DeMarco he never well he couldn't get near him to kick him but the 45 minutes I saw Mkhitaryan was coming over trying to double up they were trying everything but it was the best 45 minutes of individual talent I think I've seen in a long long time you know how some you know You know you're in the presence of something special?
10:16Greatness. Do you know what it is when I watch him play? He's got all of the flair and he's got all the ability, but he's decision-making. He's so mature. You know, he will just lend it and get it back. I'm with you, Ali. When I watch him play, I think that's the next one. The next one. Spain, do we think back to favourites again? Because after the first game, Cape Verde. We'll come to Cape Verde as well, obviously, shortly. But everyone was going, hmm. But I think the fact that Luminiumal is so important to them that, I mean, I know most of the teams in the tournament, they rely on the player.
10:50And if anything happens to that player, they're in trouble. But I only think with Spain, however good they may be elsewhere, he's so important to them. Spain now remain unbeaten, by the way, in each of their last 32 matches across all competitions. 1-23, draw 9. And that's the outright second longest streak without defeat in their history. They're not bad. They're not bad. What were they doing differently, Mike, today than the first game against Cape Verde, apart from the presence of Lamine? I just think moving the ball a lot quicker. I think Pedri was outstanding. I think Rodri was good. I think if you look at where there was winning the ball back as well, there was really pressing really high.
11:34And then once Lamine came to the... Whether he was going on the inside or whether he was going on the outside, He was attracting players as well. I felt like in the first game watching Spain, it was ticker-tacker and it was easy for the other team to sort of defend against them. When you've got someone like Lamin who's on the pitch, he sort of changes the angles of everything. And then once you get the ball out to him and he goes there with pace and that position, it's just too hard to get anywhere near him. I thought, Oyathaba. Is that how you pronounce it, guys? Oyathaba. Oyathaba. I was nervous about it.
12:12I was nervous about it. You said it. You've got to get the R. It's horrible, you know. You've got to just say yes. Yeah, but I can't say yes, because then I'll get kind for being wrong. Ali, can you say it? Meeks, I've went through. OK, so how do you say it? Meeks, I've went through two sets of teeth already trying to pronounce it, man. I was thinking, I'm not going to bring him into it. I'm bringing these boys in for red rum, honestly. I think with a bit of Portuguese influence, you might be able to say it, Mo.
12:40Mo Gilligan:What now? Oyarzabal. Oyarzabal. Oyarzabal. Oyarzabal. Oyarzabal. As long as you do... Just right. Do you think Spain are favourites? What do you think? I definitely think Spain are favourites. I feel like any of the teams in the World Cup that have played with each other for longer than maybe two years, so you're looking at that team, you're looking at, I would say, obviously, France as well, and I'd say England as well. I feel like once it gets to the crunch time, you're talking like quarters and semis and finals, I feel like they're players that, almost like system players. I feel like I've enjoyed the World Cup.
13:15Mo Gilligan:It's very free-flowing, but sometimes I'm watching games and it does look like uncles in the park. It's all a bit all over the place. Do you know what I mean? You're like, I can't talk. I'm not a professional footballer. No, that's the kind of analysis we miss. Yeah, but sometimes I'm like, okay, it's a bit wild. Do you know what I mean? As much as it's free-flowing, I think a lot of those bigger teams, they're going to know how to play in the pockets. Do you know what I mean? Can he do it on the half-turn? Can he do it on the half-turn? If you can't do it on the half-turn, you can't do it on the half-turn.
13:47Mo Gilligan:Do you know what I mean?
13:52Joe, it's great that you're on today, particularly, I think, because I think there's quite a few good goalkeeping stories. The first one is interesting. Unai Simon, obviously, is in charge. I think most, and I'm sure Mo agrees, that obviously David Raya has been so unbelievably fantastic for Arsenal that he's not in the side. What are your thoughts on that, Joe? I think it's tough. I think it's very much Unai Simon came in when David De Gea took over from Ike Casillas and he was the number one. And David De Gea was playing at Manchester United at such a level. When he had that drop-off and Luis Enrique was under so much pressure to take him out of the team, Unai Simon was kind of not really bashing on the door, but he kind of got in by default.
14:32And since that moment, he's not really put a foot wrong. The coaches really liked him. Obviously, they won the tournament two years ago. And David Rea, Mo, I know you'll be a big fan. I'm a massive fan of David Rea. David Rea is hot right now. He's at the highest of his possibilities, of his powers. And it seems like he's getting better. But as a goalkeeper, you guys would have experienced it through your career. Meeks, you'll have experienced it. And I've actually felt the benefit of it. Once you've got that number one jersey, you almost have to lose it yourself rather than someone go past you.
15:01And he's playing at such a high level in terms of athletics in La Liga and also doing so well. Not really putting a foot wrong for Spain. He's an important cog to their chain. They're very much a team team. They're not looking for those stars. La Mignemel is obviously so important to them in terms of that stardust. But in terms of those guys behind the scenes, those soldiers who are well drilled, he's a really good goalkeeper for that. He's safe, good pair of hands. and David Rea, of course, he's one of the world's best at this moment in time but Simon's done well over the last couple of years and they're going to do well to take the jersey off him.
15:34Who do you prefer? Goalkeeper style? I know why David Rea should be playing. Okay, he should be playing because he's electric. He looks like he's a real match winner. As I say, Mo, you'll appreciate that more than anyone. There's no way Arsenal win that title without him being at his elite best. Would they have won it with Unai Simon? I don't know but I'm also going to make the argument I've been a goalkeeper that's been at my best level when I was a bit younger and then through the years it was about being safe and solid someone you could rely on and Simon offers that with so much stardust around in the Spanish team that he's a real vital cog but I don't think he'd lose a wink of sleep if he had to play him or Garcia I like the fact he just said Simon he was quite good as well Unai Simon The grammar police over there No it was just a slip of the tongue I thought he was quite, you know, apt in many ways.
16:29I think maybe the story of this World Cup's Cape Verde, or certainly at this stage. And Joe, the goalkeeper, Vosinha, obviously. I mean, he made another couple of really good saves. They got another draw. He was heroic in the first game, obviously. And he's up to 15.2 million followers. And I was thinking at the end, it looked like he might have made a mistake, but he was offside. and he got away with it. Otherwise, I think everyone would have unfollowed him. But it's a lovely story, Joe, isn't it? It is. And that moment you're talking about, Gary, that is literally the life of a goalkeeper. My heart sank because, look, he's making unbelievable saves.
17:09Of course he is in the numbers and to keep a clean sheet against Spain and his profile to rise. You just kind of feel like you can't help but feel it. As a goalkeeper, you feel protective. You almost want the game to go by without you having to have anything to do. It's not like a striker. You don't want to score a hat-trick again. You just want to just blend back into the background and let your hard work pay off. Really, Joe? I've played with goalkeepers that are desperate just to show off and make a few saves. Are you sure about that? Oh, no. They're just a nice little sprinkle. But honestly, if you want to have that kind of longevity and for him to have that spike, we're going to talk about Instagram followers because that's the modern world we live in.
17:45Like, he's famous risen. He's on everyone's lips. He's an absolute story. But we all know, like I say, Gary, For you to score three, and if you don't score again for two games, no one's really bothered. If he'd come in tonight and had a stinker... But if he'd come in tonight and had a stinker, you just immediately, like, it was a one-off, like, get out of here. So for him to just have a solid game, I know he had that moment, but he knew it was offside anyway, so he didn't waste his energy. Don't talk about goals with Gary, please. He won't shut up. Here, move on now. You want me to shut up? It's not...
18:16We're doing a show here. I'm like, just be quiet then if you want, Micah. That's no problem. You know, Cape Verde, two draws against teams that you wouldn't expect to get a result against. Will it be different now? They're going into a game with Saudi Arabia. And obviously, this group's quite tight. Yeah. But a result, any kind of result will get them through. It's the most interesting group, isn't it? Nobody saw this coming. The way they played today watching them, they looked solid, they looked athletic, and they wasn't just sitting back. sitting back, every moment of bombing forward, what Mo was saying is right about the World Cup being a bit wild.
18:51It was a really good game. So every opportunity they got, I don't know, do they do anything? I don't think they do anything different. I think they were in such a... And do you know what was beautiful? When they scored the goals, the whole of the bench, you know, the kid was crying, wasn't he? That was a lovely picture of the sub crying. And I don't know if he'd had five quid on his mate to score or something, but he was like, it was like the emotion. I think that would drive him through. I'd love to see him go through. Imagine that. Bielsa you know again your man you've caused a little bit of a rumpus about your criticism no because I don't know what the boys think but Bielsa I think has got a massive reputation as a top manager and he's won three titles in Argentina and a championship with Leeds in 30 years and I just looked at him he looked awkward on the bench his team looked exhausted I think you're a guy in danger of going out this episode is brought to you by Wise it's only when you start moving money between currencies that you really think about the exchange rate, the fee and what might be hidden away in the small print.

22:39There's some good games coming up And the big stars are back out All on the same day Yes Got Argentina, Austria Messi's playing France, Iraq Mbappe, of course Norway, Senegal Haaland All the big guns out
22:53Mo Gilligan:Everyone's turned up at this World Cup Everyone Apart from maybe Cristiano Ronaldo But I feel like everyone Also of every age group as well Messi being one of the older ones but also like La Minha Mao. Everyone, it's very much like a World Cup where, you know, like there's always the star player. Every star player is doing their thing for their team and it'll be interesting how that starts, you know, progressing later on. Can I ask you, like as a striker, when you, you know, you want to be top guy, now you're a top goal scorer. When you're at a tournament, would you be tuning in if you're on four or five goals and someone's just behind you and would you be thinking, I hope he misses that?
23:30100%. Yeah, okay, all right. Not from the quarterfinals, the semifinals. Yeah, from day one. From day one. Not from day one. You know who the likely challenges are for you with a golden boot. And it's like, missed. Yeah, get it. No, of course you do. Because it's odd, obviously, because strikers and, you know, it's goalkeepers as well. You're probably thinking you want the golden glove or whatever. And if you're in contention, you probably, I don't know whether Joe will agree, but you probably want them to throw one in the back of the net so they don't win. But with strikers, we're all like that because it's a competition within a competition.
24:10So it's not like the Olympics where you have separate events, but it almost is in the terms of the golden boot. So you've got to go for it. I think from that point of view, it's a selfishness that's probably accepted. You know what I mean? Certainly among strikers. Your teammates are going to like it if you bang one in. That's for sure. I really want to ask you this question. If you were up against Messi, Mbappe, Haaland, which one would you fear the most when they're coming through at you? See, that's the madness of this position, Gary, because I'm only OK with it now. I used to think and hear you guys saying that goalkeepers are all mad, and I was like, absolutely not.
24:54They're just normal people that put gloves on. It's only now I've come out of it, I realized that, yeah, 100 % mad, because all three of those names, not one ounce of fear is going through my body. I want all three of them running at me at once, and I want impact. I want to meet them at the ball. I want their best shot. I want their hardest shot. And I now realize what a ridiculous way of thinking. Like, how on earth is that a mindset? But it's only now I've come out of it. But honestly, if you'd have asked me that when I was in-game, in-play, all I would want is those three coming at me. No defenders, no nothing.
25:27Let's have it. I want to ask you, Joe, can you possibly read Messi? No. He was so difficult. I loved playing against him and I genuinely feel honoured that I shared the pitch with him, I think on four occasions. But to enjoy his quality, and do you know the worst thing about him as a goalkeeper was I'd go in goal and as it got narrowed down, I'd want to make it as difficult as I possibly could. And the best players, Gary, I'm sure you were one of these when you had people narrowing the angle, you'd have to give them something because it was always in your advantage, you know, 1v1 or whatever. He'd always take the hardest one on and take it on with the most calmness.
26:08So if I would give him the cut back rather than and block the goal big, he'd cut it back calmly. And if I didn't give him, if I gave him the far post and said, you're going to have to beat me at the far post as I just see the ball cruise past me in the far corner. And that was quite disheartening when you play against players like that. But it also brings the best out in you. You had one of your best games against Messi though. Yeah. I remember that game. He was on fire. I think he got man of the match in the home leg for sure. And then in the Camp Nou to play against Messi, it was Messi, Neymar and Suarez as a trio.
26:38And it was honestly, it was like going back to my school days of just absolutely... I didn't care about the Champions League, I didn't care about the people in the stadium. It was just about being a kid in goal playing against the best. And it was a magnificent night and one I'll never ever forget. Fantastic. It was like Mo playing in that back four.
26:55Mo Gilligan:because I've seen that clip of you, Joe, where you're playing for England. They're like, give me the ball! Give me the fucking ball! That clip, it's so funny. Have you seen the clip? I don't think I have. Oh, someone ain't giving him the ball. And it's, do you know what I love about that clip? It's the realness. Like everyone, I feel like I'm you, where I'm just like, give him the ball. Oh, it's so funny, man. You know what, though, Mo? So funny. That was a World Cup. And then that was like 93rd minute of a game. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 2-1 Darren against Italy. in Manaus in Brazil and the ball boys are there.
27:29They're enjoying the occasion and everyone in the World Cup who's not playing is enjoying themselves. These ball boys have been fucking doing my head in the whole game. 2-1 down. Perlo's just hit this free kick that's wobbled about six different ways and everyone's like, oh, what an amazing free kick. Give me the fucking ball. 2-1 down, give me the ball. And I didn't realise it at the time. I didn't realise it. And then I'd seen it back after and I was like, oh my God, who's that maniac shouting at that 10-year-old? Yeah, but you didn't just say, give me the effing ball. Oh, yeah. You basically kicked the boards as well, didn't you?
28:02My head had gone. Total headlock. What can you do sometimes your head goes? Well, as you quite rightly said, Joe, goalkeepers are all bad.
28:12That's it for this episode of The Rest is Football. We'll be back with, well, post-England games, so there'll be much to discuss on that. and don't forget you can watch us every single day on netflix but for now goodbye from me
