Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:09Hi, Gary Lineker here. Quite rightly today we are handing over the reins of the rest of football to two Lionesses that won the Euros four years ago so they know exactly what the feelings are with the players tonight. What a fantastic victory. Incredible performance. Such a gutsy side, aren't they? They've come back and they've won against the odds on quarterfinals, semifinals, and now the final against a very good Spanish side. What a performance. What a nail-biting climax. Brilliant goalkeeper from Hannah Hampton. And, of course, Chloe did it again, didn't she? Kelly's heroes. Let me hand over now to Rachel and Millie from The Rest is Football Daily Brightness.
0:59Before we kick off today's episode of Daily Brightness A massive thank you to our proud partners Shaw for backing us since day one

3:41Rachel Daly:England are European champions once again, back to back. Hello everyone and welcome to Daily Brightness. The Lionesses have just defended their crown after a brilliant and dramatic victory against Spain on penalties. Mil, how emotionally drained are you after that one? I feel like I've been at the tournament, to be honest, the last few weeks. Literally, I said that. I was like, I feel like I'm playing this match. Emotionally, I feel like I've been there. I feel so drained. I was tracking my heart rate and I'm like, I'm at 130 watching a game of football. What? Honestly, it's crazy, but unbelievable.
4:15And yeah, I think, honestly, the resilience the girls have showed the whole tournament. and yes it's not been a perfect journey but who gives a shit you've got a medal around your net you're lifting the trophy again and you've made history back-to-back champions like nothing else matters yeah but yeah just so proud of everyone so so happy for the girls and yeah like it's it's actually been like a really proud like nice moment i don't know you felt like it's obviously our first tournaments like watching from a different angle and i've done a lot of like pacing and stuff and you feel like you're there and you're present but you can't influence but But yeah, it's been so nice to just see the youngsters coming through and everyone contributing.
4:51And just like that team togetherness, it's been a real joy to watch from the sides.
4:55Rachel Daly:Yeah, I think I was a bit nervous going into this tournament because I was thinking, oh, it's my first one away from it. Like, how am I going to feel? And I was like, I got a bit sad at the start. But as soon as it kicked off, I was just like, I felt like I was in the squad. I'm like, yes, we're in. I've got the bag packed. I'm on my way. I'm watching all the training videos. I'm watching all the like walking out to the bus. I'm like, here I am doing the same thing. But I feel like that's like a true saying, like once a lioness, always a lioness, isn't it? Like you always, always feel like you're going to be a part of it.
5:24Rachel Daly:And I couldn't be more proud. I think obviously, I mean, they wouldn't have done it any other way based on this tournament by giving us a heart attack until the end. But like you say, who gives a shit? Like we are back-to-back champions and unbelievable. Let's go rewind all the way back. Obviously, Caldante putting Spain ahead. Yeah. What a great header. But what did you think? Because I don't know. There was just something about me. I was like, they're not going to win. So it's fine. Do you know what it was? I think the semis were a lot more electric. For a final, it didn't feel like a final.
5:56It didn't feel like that. I don't know. They just didn't feel like a spark. Like it felt a little bit flat for me.
6:02Rachel Daly:Did you have a prediction before the game? I said 2-1 to us. So did I. I said 1-1 and then 2-1 in extra time. I see. I said 2-1 full time. So I was a little bit off. I thought New would carry it to extra time. three back-to-back extra times two penalty shootouts i don't think that's ever been done get these poor girls a beer get them a beer get them a two-week holiday and we'll see you in pre-season i'm actually devastated i'm not there for the party because that would be sick yeah the parties are the one they're the best bits as we remember from the last one yeah exactly i think before we get to like the absolute amazing part of it let's talk a bit about the game i think obviously Caldente's goal was great but then we lost LJ quite early wasn't it and you knew straight away it's like I think obviously everyone was saying before the game is she fit is she not we've got 23 players I was surprised she started I'm not gonna lie just because knowing her and knowing when she's taken a knock she's not 100 % and LJ is a player that she needs to be 100 % to play like that's just the nature of the player that she is so I was surprised to see her play and I was like oh I'm not sure if her ankle's gonna hold out on that so I did expect to see Chloe in the starting line-up to be honest just based on when LJ's taking a knock she's not going to be good for 90 and then it's a risk in the first half but I think the team adapted well to be honest but yeah I thought it was a little bit cagey a little bit of a cagey final I think both teams trying to suss each other out a little bit and although we're very familiar with each other it still felt a little bit like people were too scared to make a move because both teams are unbelievable going forward that's the thing I think Spain are always going to dominate possession like that's what they're good at right but I just think we're so good at like getting like one I just thought once we get them on the counter like our front line against them like it's dangerous yeah and then obviously heartbreaking to lose LJ at any point in any game I hope she's all right I hope especially for you guys I hope she's all right yeah get some ice on that ankle girl but I think Chloe coming on sparked a bit of like the fans are excited the team are excited everyone knows like what she's brought throughout this tournament everyone knows like what she can do and then for her to go like her delivery right just for anyone that doesn't understand this right i don't know if i've said this before in a podcast but i have never ever ever seen a better crosser of a ball and never played with a better cross of the ball like her deliveries are insane pinpoint you should score every time when chloe puts it in the box every time me and chloe were at training and stuff i was always like honestly i'd love to be on the end of your crosses like when you when we're on together whip them in and obviously that ball she played Alessia I was like yes goal straight away great header though you know not as easy as it looked no at all not as easy as it looked back peddling we actually have a running thing like Les Les scores so many goals when she's on the floor have you noticed that yeah she's always on the floor and I was like go to ground go to ground you're gonna score but no that was such a difficult and I went into this game and I literally said to I was sat with Lucy Stan and Sarah watching the game and I was we were all like Les is going to score today like 100 % Les is scoring like no doubt about it Was you a bit shocked at how early Les came off when she'd just scored?
9:11Rachel Daly:Millie I I honestly I just I just don't understand that like Les is like she's fit she's athletic like she's put in a fucking shift this whole tournament right she's run the most in our team but she still looked like she was giving and she was fresh and she was running I just think when you take a goal scorer off like that she's just scored she's got momentum she's feeling confident leave her on the pitch what I will say right is because we won I'm like whatever everything works it's fine it was meant to be but at the time I was like no why are you taking her off no leave her on I didn't understand that and just for people to get a good like a different view of it yes we've won and do what you like obviously all the decisions were correct don't change him don't do anything different but Serena we trust yes we trust but just for everyone listening I think it's just like yeah I was just sat there and I was like why have you taken her off like she's literally just scored I saw the board go up and I was like Alessia I was like obviously listen Serena knows what the hell she's doing she's a serial winner she knew what was best but yeah at the same time I was like huh and so early we've never made subs that early I was like we're going for it in 90 year I know and I just think that experience that she's got it was just but yeah listen and I think to be honest I think it looked a bit of a leggy final from both teams and I'm not surprised because this tournament has been so difficult.
10:32Competitiveness and how hard it is to win. I think we've seen it go up another level.
10:36Rachel Daly:Do you know what I found really strange? As a striker, when Honour plays that ball across the front, face a goal, why is Parallel Wello trying to flick it into the goal? She literally should have just tapped it in. I know you're left-footed, that's fine, but it's on your right foot, it's just tapping. Hannah would have saved anyway but I'm like what are you doing there's an extra time you'd be kicking yourself after that that's a big miss because really that should be a goal like if we if we were coming off a pitch right and we were analysing our games and we'd have played and you'd have done that you'd have been like fuck I should have scored like you should have scored that yeah you would be because it's like you're trying to do something fancy just tap it in like your team's in a fantastic position honestly I was like why are you just trying to flick that what are you doing yeah just hit it tap it and then obviously i am like i'm praying with every piece of my bones muscles whatever that lucy's okay because that broke my heart like seeing her go down like i always think don't go down no lucy's like bionic woman like for the rest of the day when i see her holding that knee it gives me i get scared anyway i was honestly i was so sad i thought please don't be hurt And then when she went back on, like knowing Lucy, you know Lucy, she'll run through a million brick walls and she was always going to go back on.
11:54Of course she was. I was like, don't even put the sub board up. She's not coming off unless she has to. And I was like,
11:58Rachel Daly:Niamh get up and Niamh was probably thinking, I should probably sit back down. She's going back on. But I was just like, yeah, I was just, and then obviously in those moments, there's been so many injuries and players going back on the pitch and you don't know if you're making it worse, but Lucy would do anything for that medal and she deserves it the most out of any player. I think she's been unbelievable this tournament, by the way. I think she's been our best player throughout the whole tournament, that leader. She's been driving us forward. She's been the one rallying the girls together in the tough moments.
12:25She's the one kind of pushing us forward and making sure everyone's in place. And we know she'll have been looking after the youngsters. But I think, yeah, she deserves it more than anyone. So I'm so, so chuffed for her.
12:36Rachel Daly:Yeah. Yeah, she really does deserve it. I just hope she's okay. I pray to all the gods out there that she's okay. She will be getting wrapped in cotton wool. Moving on to the penalties. I was a bit like right who's going to take them I was thinking yeah because most of our takers were off most of our takers were off I thought Mido maybe not because she missed and I know how hard she is on herself yeah and Alex missed as well so it's like would you take another like tired legs I think I would have thought Alex would have but I think us knowing Mido and she put so much pressure on herself that because she missed I was like I hope she takes one you know like you don't want to just yeah and then the bloody slip what are the odds The pitch looked a bit shit though.
13:17Like I said, after the first one, I was like, the pen spot looks crap.
13:21Rachel Daly:When she slipped and it went in, even the second one she missed it, because that one went in, I was like, England are winning this tournament. No doubt about it. Like that in itself was like, nah, they're going to win this tournament. But I mean, Hannah, unbelievable again, but I was a little bit shocked at Spain's because they're so technical. I was like, they're just going to pass it in top India. But they missed two against Switzerland in open play. and I thought, I don't think they're very, I don't know, I must admit, right, I felt sick, like in extra time, I was like, you never want a team to win or lose on penalties really, do you?
13:53Rachel Daly:Like in a final, like it's not how you want the game to end, right? But I thought to myself, played for penalties in the last five minutes and I thought, there's no doubt we're going to win this. Like Hannah, no keeper's better than Hannah, so no problem. Yeah, she's been incredible by the way. She's got to be keeper of the tournament. Starter in her first major tournament and she's done insane. but do you know what you know what's amazing it's like Mary was insane in Euro 2022 and then Hannah's been insane in 2025 and you're just like the depth that you've got in those goalkeepers the pool of talent is just insane like she has been unbelievable though like goalkeeper uni and shout out to them during this tournament because insane but yeah I agree I think like their main takers missing like I don't know yeah that's what I'm saying that's where I was like that's what was disappointing is they're the ones what you expect to be like bury it and be like give you that confidence that little bit of lift but I was just like oh like that weren't yeah just you just say I think you just because players are at such a high level we just expect so much and you know what I think we've we've actually sat here like fans and we're like we now I actually understand it a little bit because as a fan you're watching and you're like because you know the levels that those players can play at you expect like you expect it 24 7 and then I have to flip back to like my my player brain and i'm like hold on a sec tired legs like emotions all that that sits in so it's been quite interesting like reflecting in that honestly i have never been a fan to the point where i feel like i'm gonna pass out like honestly i was like oh i'm so nervous i was i'm so hot i need to go for a nervous week i need no i'm gonna be sick somebody calm me down and like i ended up filming me sarah and lucy on the penalties because i was like this is a moment in history that I've never lived before.
15:46Rachel Daly:I was more nervous watching that than I was ever stepping up for a penalty for England. We're now just at home not celebrating. You want to get on that plane and be out there with the girls and celebrate now. I might go to the pub tonight. Look at us, working. What in the world is this? We're not there celebrating. Can all the viewers just appreciate? we're not actually celebrating for you lot so you better appreciate it we should be having one down the pub honestly but right this girl was born born to be a hero weren't she you know what I'm going to say I only know the name sissy get it little sissy little sis Chloe fucking Kelly say it louder I said it do you know what I did an interview the other day and they mentioned Chloe Kelly and I was like I've got no words for like the kindest human one you could ever meet the best teammate would accept her role whether it's five minutes on the pitch no minutes on the pitch training player starter she'll be the best teammate you could ever ever ask for two probably one of the most underrated and I think people have finally like seen how like world class she is and I think that move to Arsenal has like sparked Chloe Kelly and just shown as well.
17:03And I said, fair play, all what she's gone through, about to quit football, mistreated in an environment to the point where she felt like quitting football and couldn't play.
17:14Rachel Daly:Doesn't it just show how valuable it is to be in an environment where you're respected and you're valued and you're appreciated? Yeah, exactly. Now look at her. One of the best players in the world. Like, she's literally saved England. Saved England, saved Arsenal as well. I sat there and I thought, you won it in 2022. to you've won it in 2025 like i'm like literally give her what the hell she wants all you commercial people yeah give her what you want give it to chloe kelly give the girl what she wants but can we just shout ck if you get like a yacht or a private jet he's hate me in range please because we do love you but i think do you know what i think is so special for me and i'm sure it's the same for you it's like obviously we're classed as fans at this point right but yeah it couldn't have happened to like a better group of people so you're like staff and players like i'm so happy for everyone like because as a footballer right so like obviously i'm a massive leeds fan so i'm watching leeds and i'm like i didn't know that you actually you've not mentioned it before so i'm watching leeds and i'm a fan right so it's nerve-wracking in its own right but being a fan of people that you genuinely love and you know that's like family for us that is honestly i've never been i've bit all my nails off also right i went to this i went to listen to this i think england won because of this right i went to this event first game of the tournament england against france right and it was an event for visa and they're like you need to get your nails painted i was like no i'm not getting my nails painted the game's about to come on they're like no no like you've got to have something i said right i'll have an england flag put on my little finger you see it it's nearly off yeah right and i've kept it on from the first game and I was like everyone's like take it off I'm like no no no because England are gonna win this tournament I think that's it though and also we even though we're watching as fans like we know the people that are there like we know what they've been through we know kind of things that people don't know and we know the struggles and we know how hard it is like to come off the back of something that maybe has happened in your personal life and then you've got to gear yourself up for a tournament, deal with all the criticism and the, oh, the England team aren't that experienced, how are they going to cope?
19:28Like, everyone's against you. Silence the haters. Silence the haters. Sit down. But it's, yeah, it's one of those where those kind of people and, like you said, unbelievable group of players and staff and couldn't have happened to a better group, but just even more so people that are like, are like best friends, like Chloe Kelly, like Mido, like knowing what they've gone through and like little Toonie and I just, and Les and yeah it makes it we name them all
19:53Rachel Daly:like we love them all I can just go through all the teams if you want me to I think that's what's so special is that it's like I feel like I've won it with them because we've known them for so long it's like a family do you know what I mean it is a lot of people's first tournament this is what people forget like we've got so many players in that team it's like their first experience like first major tournament some people's like debuts and stuff like that and then like they're the people that have like saved us and it's been like a proper i said this as well like we've had the best team in the tournament we might not necessarily played the best but we've had the best team in terms of subs have accepted their roles and played their part and like rescued the team and but you know i feel like even even from the beginning right you know like the clicking thing right there was a lot of like um and iron whether that was like separation and like you know when you're in that environment why do people jump on stuff like that i don't understand i don't know but you know when you're in that environment right it you're so together but those players that don't play as much become a unit that has to stay so strong in order for the starters to thrive and those starters have to stay so strong so that the subs can come on and make an impact right so i don't think anyone really appreciate how close they were and like those as soon as they did this clicking thing right i was like they're so together like they're a unit mate they've done like in every tournament every tournament the subs have had something and it's from the outside i understand like the look it can give and they separate but it isn't it's just a way of the subs managing you have to remember these these are also humans that are have been dying to play in a tournament dying to like get on the pitch and sometimes as a player when you don't play as much you can start to think like well shit like i'm not contributing even though you are like you're literally like the most important players for me more so than the starters like the most important like they're the ones cheering you on they do the blowouts they make sure like the standards high they make sure that the starting 11 is prepped like the sub the group of players that don't play as much are so I don't know sometimes they're just overlooked so if you create a little thing I'm like yes do it because you know that then they're fully committed they're fully up for it so anyway we need to do a little appreciation
22:06come on England right guys we are going to head for a quick break we will be back very soon.

Millie let's talk about what they're going to be doing right now the best part right this is where we came alive we were the life and soul of the party I loved it oh to be honest there's not a lot that I remember from that but I all I want for these girls right is to have a little celebration get your trophy get change go be with your family have that time and then just get absolutely rat assed wake up tomorrow and don't remember it yeah but I can this is what's weird like for how like completely out of it we was i can remember everything yeah but i think a bit so barn is like paced so like like if you said something to me like oh yeah i poured a beer over your head yeah well i remember that and then i was doing the worm i was doing the worm with my uncle yeah it was a good it was a good party that one it to be fair it was sick it was but i imagine there'll be like you said so for anyone that doesn't know and is listening you kind of have your little celebrations on the pitch you appreciate the fans and you'll do the trophy lift and then to be honest that moment is a bit of a blur isn't it like it's just like holy shit we've just won like the euros we're back-to-back champions like the girls are just going to be like what the hell some people's first medal like first trophy lift and then you kind of go go in the changing rooms like sweet caroline will definitely be on you'll have like your drinks and everyone's celebrating staff included and then it's just the party just begins from there and i hope they've got t-shirts done again i really hope they've got t-shirts like back-to-back champions please i think that's like a moment to speak about right so how like first of all serena like she's done back-to-back-to-back as euros that's insane that's insane but how many she's done back-to-back yours but in terms of finals she's done more than that oh back-to-back-to-back-to-back i could go on ridiculous but i think to be like okay so as a nation we've always kind of struggled to get things under the line haven't we in previous years and yeah we've always been right up there but it's just been kind of like oh I've not made it and you always knew that we were going to win at some point and obviously we did that in 2022 and that was like the best feeling ever I think I actually think that almost took a little where everyone said those targets on our back and there's pressure I actually feel like it took a little bit pressure off because we'd done it yeah but to do it again I feel like it it added more pressure from out of England but in terms of nation it took the target off because we'd finally succeeded yeah do you know what i mean but outside of that then when you become successful in in sport your target becomes even bigger but in in the country it became really to do it again like twice in a row i like that's difficult in anything right that's difficult if you win wimbledon it's difficult if you win formula what like whatever it is to do back to back and just look how much the groups evolved as well exactly there's so much change like there's so many outstanding youngsters coming through that have had their first tournament there's been players that have not played a minute there's been players that have played every game there's been players that have come on have been heroes come back from injury come back from god knows what like i hope everyone on the outside now starts to realize like what a unit england is like yeah you know you know you're like me right like obviously we're going through these games going oh shit that that was a bit cagey or that was we could have lost that one but equally we're both sat there going we're not going to lose no exactly I think we knew we knew the whole way along like and that's just us analysing a game but in terms of if we were there we'd be like yeah alright cool know what like so what it doesn't matter next next thank you next next but nah incredible I think it's so good and honestly for all the youngsters that have just come in on their first tournament not even all the youngsters that are watching this game now under 19s under 23s under 17 take your chance take your chance because those girls that have come in like the youngsters I think have been brilliant and you know just to I just want them all to embrace the moment though do not let this night don't let this day or this night or tomorrow because I imagine when they come back to England they'll do like a big ceremony again and maybe back to Trafalgar Square you never know if you need us to perform again I might be there with my microphone I might be there on stage again I might have my shades on if you need me holler okay trust me if you want us to perform again and we will come and do the performance.
29:04No problem. Also, I think, like you said.
29:07Rachel Daly:Well, just embrace it. Yeah, embrace that. It can go by you so quickly. Click of your fingers, like it can be gone. So I just... What I will say is, don't buy any new Balenciaga trainers before you go out. Because you may not get run over. No, that's only if you're taking me home in a cab. I'm a trouble. I'm trouble. Oh, God. But no, it'll be unbelievable. But I do feel like I should have a little celebration. I feel like it's wrong that we just sat here, like not celebrating. I'm not working. working who'd have thought three years on three years on three years on and we've actually matured finally in our 30s just looking at my medal thinking oh take me back honestly I'd do anything to be in that junior room right now honestly same can't wait for the videos let's go through the parties what's our typical song Sweet Caroline always I heard it straight after the game I was like oh that's taking me back yeah oh I know but how funny were they going sweet I had your man I know I love that that was sick to be fair that was sick I did feel a little bit sad when the final whistle went like when the final because I wanted to be there I know same you know because you know what's coming in that moment like you know like everyone's together everyone's on the floor I think I'd have got I'd have got kicked out of the stadium because I probably would have run on the pitch oh yeah Shriek's on the pitch I'd have thought yeah I'd have thought I was still playing I'd be like I'm it but you know what a song I do like da da da da da da da Serena I've loved that I'm like Serena but let's just say before we say anything more because we haven't actually said it yet a massive congratulations to the Lionesses we love you all we're so so proud a massive congratulations to Serena and your team unbelievable achievement and I'm just a bit speechless to be honest I've got yeah nothing else to add other than you've made the country extremely proud and the belief to now go on and win the next major tournament is definitely definitely there and yeah just unbelievable achievement and yeah, we're really, really proud of you.
31:00So congratulations to absolutely everyone.
31:03Rachel Daly:I mean, I can only echo what you said, but Serena, England, staff, players, everybody involved, the team behind the team, every single player, every single staff member, you are insane. We love you. We are so proud. We're buzzing to be English and keep bringing the thing home. Bring it back and take it to Trafalgar Square and we will perform. Take it back to where it belongs. We'll keep it. there's no point even giving it back why did we even give it back it's ours give it back look that's it there give it back they can't take it it's inked we just keep it forever England till I die that's it for the rest of this football daily brightness yet again the Lionesses are European champions back to back say it louder for the ones at the back that ever doubted us we are the best bring it home girls that is it from us goodbye from me Come on, England.
31:59Rachel Daly:Goodbye from me. And now we're going to stop working and go and have a beer. Woo!
