3:42Gary Lineker:yeah I've been in Ibiza for a pal's 50th I managed to make it make it out alive but I'm I'm on water for the next few days I saw you on your

3:53Alan Shearer:on your Instagram Alan at Ushwire raving raving

3:59Gary Lineker:still rocking it with the young ones guys you know it's alright there's still life for us old ones yet you know older now I feel like we're not your real friends. We've been working together four years now. You've not took me for a beer once. We get the occasional drink before we've got to do it FA Cup time. And that's it. Well, Alex and Gary are my friends. You're not my fucking friends. You know that. And Calvin Harris is your friend as well. Well, of course. How do you think we got in the VIP area? How do you know him? I can't tell you that. The secret. Is he a nice guy? He's a lovely guy. He was very, very generous and most welcoming and looked after us like royalty.

4:43Gary Lineker:So we had a great night. Did you bore him to death, did you? Of course I did, yeah. Back in my day, you know, I'm the leading Premier League top goalscourt, you know? Oh, my God. Well, he hasn't been on the moon for the last four years, has he?

4:59Alan Shearer:What about you, Micah? What have you been up to? You're looking very cool in your shades there.

5:04Gary Lineker:He's hiding something by me. That's why he's got those glasses on. Let's just say I had an eventful night last night. I went to a members club. I won't tell you which one it was. And let's just say ended very well. Let's say that. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. That didn't sound right. No, it didn't. That didn't sound right. It ended. I mean, it ended late. Yes, it ended late. Yes. That's what I meant to say, Alan. Yeah.

5:35Alan Shearer:It was a good night. I'm back from Menorca. I flew back today and this morning went for a coffee and just give a shout out to these young lads who were going diving and about five or six of them. And they all said, oh, we love the pod. So shout out to you boys. And they were very polite. Nice lads. I'm back in Miami Beach. Oh, what a life you're living. What a life you're living. You were at the Manchester City game, weren't you? Yeah, finally went to Mummer as well. Thanks for the recommendation. Oh, and? It was really good. Really good. Four courses. Four courses. When you think like an athlete, setbacks don't stop you.

7:43Alan Shearer:Describe your night then, Alex. Because, I mean, it was so late. Obviously, I've watched it subsequently. But I woke up in the morning to the scoreline because it kicked off here. Yeah, so late. So late. The last interview I did was 2.15 in the morning. Oof. Which was Marcus Leonardo, obviously the hero with the winning goal. Milankovic, Savage! What a save! It's in! There's no offside flag!

8:14I mentioned him after game number one.

8:17Alan Shearer:Hang on, Micah, before you get too braggadocious. Braggadocious? Alex did say I'm going to give it we've given you plenty of stick-outs for some of your predictions but I do recall at the start of the tournament that you said Al-Halal could cause a surprise and I said to you what you think like a one-off surprise or could they go deep into and you went no I think they could go deep into the tournament so credit where credit is due thank you thank you about time I got a prediction right

8:57but yeah no one saw that coming though did they Al Halal were brilliant brilliant brilliant Manchester City will be so disappointed I think Bernardo Silva said it felt like going out of a Champions League but they weren't good enough done on the counter attack Micah what do you think were you disappointed with the goals they conceded

9:15Alan Shearer:same old problems that's the thing guys I think I've been saying we're talking about City defensively And some of the criticism I find harsh at times, just because when you dominate the ball so much, players are going to be out of position. However, they've conceded too many goals in that manner and they need to shore that up. I think looking at the tournament for Man City, they've played really well. I've been excited by them. I think Phil Foden's done really well. Haaland's movement, it looks a bit sharper again. Injuries are back. New signings have done well. but they've still got that same problem and it's just that Achilles heel all the time and on that transition they need to be better and more organised no matter who plays we can't just say if a Rodri plays or a defensive midfielder I mean you've got to run back for your teammates be tactical, buy a foul, do something and it's just too easy at times

10:11Gary Lineker:I did not read that they got injuries as well to Rodri and to Harlan I think Harlan's alright Harlan's alright

10:18Alan Shearer:but we're not sure they're keeping it a bit hush on Rodri, but he came on, obviously, in 50-odd minutes, and then went off in extra time. Anything from your end there, Alex? Did you get any info on it? No, no, we don't know any more than a slight injury, but fingers crossed. They're probably just knackered, to be honest, as well.

10:37Gary Lineker:I think with that type of injury, and you've been out for that long, it's, I don't know, maybe I'm not a medic. You've been through it, though.

10:45Alan Shearer:You've been through it.

10:46Gary Lineker:I've been through it, yeah. you get all sorts of tweaks and little niggles and problems and just finding your way back in i think that's pretty normal and i hope it's not too serious but it's just little little bits just for just for the listener al you know when you do a cruciate ligament injury what what sort of niggles are you talking about are you compensating on on one leg for for the other maybe is it that you're trying too hard is it what what sort of niggles were you getting at the time Well, it's a bit of everything because nothing works perfectly until you actually get out onto the pitch and play proper games.

11:22Gary Lineker:Forget about training sessions. Forget about practice games. You never feel right until you're actually out onto the competitive games, you know, and then you forget about the movement. Everything sort of tries to come naturally, and all of a sudden you're back into it again. You're stretching for that. You're overstretching for this. and it's not as if, because you've not been part of aggressive, full-on football for so long that you're going to, there's no doubt, I think it's just natural. The injury, it's just feeling as if that's perfect because for so long you've been training on your own and then you're back in the environment of game time.

12:04Gary Lineker:There's no doubt it's going to take time and he won't be back to his very best until a month or two into the season if he starts the season again.

12:13Alan Shearer:Psychologically as well, it must take a little bit of time to trust things. If you can hear a bit of noise, I'm on the flight path here and we can't shut the window because it's just too hot. So forgive us if you hear the odd plane flying over as there's one going over now. Incredible for Al Halal though. Inzaghi, obviously he's only been there for a week. I spoke to him before the game. He's like, look, I've been here a week. but Inter Milan went out the same day just before which obviously means they'll face Fluminense and for football in Saudi Arabia as well they've got some really good players in that team but I don't think anyone thought they'd be this good It's interesting because Ronaldo didn't he I don't know, six months, a year ago said, didn't he, that he thinks that the Saudi league is in the top five I mean, he would say that because he was there but does that, it gives him a little bit of credibility for that statement doesn't it the way they've performed yeah a little bit but I wouldn't go over top on that I think the fact that the climate's played a huge part in the tournament in in Saudi they're basically playing in in that climate every single week so I'm not saying it's an advantage because the team in Europe you know we've talked about the European leagues so long if you win a Champions League or you go far into that competition you have you should have a greater a chance of winning.

13:38But if you look at Ilal's team, they've actually got some top players in that team. It's not like it was all locals. That's not me doing them down in any way. They deserve to win. But when you've got Leonardo and Malinkovic-Savic and Malcolm... Gerard Cancelo as well was amazing. Cancelo and Neves and Lodi.

13:59Alan Shearer:The Cancelo one is particularly interesting, isn't it? Because obviously he's in that position and caused a lot of problems. And also a lot of the problems City, how we're down the side of Nunes still playing at right back. And I don't really think he's a fullback. I mean, you've played that position, Mike. Are your thoughts on that? No, I think Nunes improved massively into the season. I think if you ask a midfielder to play right back, obviously that's not his strength. I think he improved defensively. But I think when you're in that position, and I think when you look at the top right backs in world football, Football's changed a little bit.

14:37We talk about Trent so much, don't we? And we talk about Hakimi. But back when we were defending, our first thought was stop the cross or do a tackle or get in his head, make sure the first tackle, he really feels you. Football's not like that right now. And for Man City's system, it works and he's done all right. But when you come up against better players who can hurt you and go in one-on-one situations, That's when it becomes a problem. Obviously, losing Kyle Walker was massive because when Man City were at the absolute best, Kyle Walker, on the transition, at his recovery pace, got him out of trouble time and time and time again.

15:20Rico Lewis obviously got his red card, didn't he? He's done okay. I thought he did really well in his first and then second season. A little bit off the ball last season. Kyle Walker's back though, isn't he?

15:34Alan Shearer:His loan period is ended. We don't know whether he's going to be there at City next season. Pep did an interview, didn't he, about four months ago, basically saying he's not coming back to play. So that position could be a problem position for them. But yeah, I think them conceding the same type of goals all the time, it's a little bit frustrating. What did you think about the first goal, the handball? It's the first time I've ever heard a ref speak to the whole stadium. I think it was certainly more of a handball than the one the other night against Chelsea. Yeah, yeah. Definitely agree with that.

16:10Alan Shearer:I mean, it looked like he gave it a little flick with the arm. I'm done with handballs. I'm done with it. Oh, all right then. I'm done with it. I'm done with handballs. Throughout the season, next season on the pod, don't ask me about any handball. because every different Ambol is, for some reason, it's given one day and not given the other day. I've had enough of it. I've had enough of it. The Al-Halal keeper's very good, by the way. Bono! Bono! Bono! He was absolutely brilliant in the World Cup as well, wasn't he? For Morocco. Al-Halal to win it, guys. You heard it. No, no, no, no. I'll take it back.

16:48I'm joking, I'm joking, I'm joking, joking, joking. But clip it off if they win.

16:55Alan Shearer:Was it Harland? Was it Harland? caught saying to Bono at the end you should come here I mean I'm not sure what Edison would have thought about that yeah not a great look is it not a great look but Manchester City go out let's discuss the other three games after a little break welcome back to the rest is football with Alex Aljo Michael Richards Alan Shurer and me Gary Linnecat Real Madrid I watched all that game because it was actually it's a reasonable hour The first half was fairly drab. It livened up just before half-time. A couple of really good crosses from Trent. But I thought second half, Real Madrid were really good.

17:37Alan Shearer:I really thought they played some good football, obviously in tough conditions. Mbappe came on as well to feature for the first time after his illness. So that was good to see. Arda Gouliera enjoyed his performance in midfield. It looks like a Xabi Alonso type of player for that particular system that he's got. So he looked like he changed something at half-time because they certainly livened up. Yeah, I actually only got there for the second half because the traffic was so bad. So I think I saw that there. I wasn't working though, Alan. I wasn't working. We'll let you off. I went as a fan, as a Real Madrid fan.

18:16By the way, it was full. It felt like the Bernabeu in there, just full of Real Madrid fans. How hot was it, really? No, it was raining.

18:23Alan Shearer:Oh, right. It's raining now as well, which isn't great. But no, they were really good. I think compared to the City game, obviously I've been at the day before, they're just so calm, so calm on the ball. City were quite frantic at times, just comparing the two performances. And you mentioned him, Garcia, he's done so, so well. Oh, yeah. He's scored or assisted in every game so far. Mbappe came on, he's lost tons of weight. Like you, Micah, seven kilos. No, you don't know if it's seven. I don't know if it's seven. But he's lost a lot. He hasn't been well. He was in hospital for a night. So it just depends whether it will start him against Borussia Dortmund or not.

18:57But I reckon he'll stick with Garcia.

18:59Gary Lineker:His movement for the goal was brilliant. I mean, it was a quality ball in, as we'd expect from Trent. But his movement and the header, I was thinking I'd have been proud of that one myself. The way he sort of climbed and directed it and the power and all of that. But to get the space itself, for me, was the most impressive. It was a brilliant goal.

19:19Alan Shearer:I thought they played some good stuff in the second half Dean Howson's done really well as well he has, he has settled in very quickly yeah he looked brilliant, he looked brilliant I was sat next to his mum and dad were you? so proud, taking photos thinking from Bournemouth to Real Madrid what a move that was be careful saying that you might get some hate for that oh gosh I'm not sure, I think everyone would accept that that's a step forward even I think the most vehement term Bournemouth fan would accept that they've loved Kepa now Kepa as well haven't they yeah goalie's gone yeah so there's been a lot of movement actually I think there might be a bit more because Rodrigo's not really getting a look in is he I think he's what has he played 23 minutes in the tournament that's all so could be on his way

20:11Gary Lineker:come on the Arsenal fan is it oh

20:14Alan Shearer:but Eze Eze looks like signing for us doesn't he? Eze, yeah Eze it looks like that's going to happen he plays sort of on that perhaps on the left hand side where Rodrigo wants to play so maybe that's not going to happen who knows Rodrigo is a class act seriously he's so good on the ball running in behind but not only that for a winger he works he's arse off he works so hard for the team and a manager comes in his new manager it might not be for him but if I was a team in the Premier League I would take him tomorrow I think he's that good I think he's so dynamic and I think he would fit perfectly in the Premier League side Yeah because he's sort of been playing out of out of position in a way a lot sometimes central sometimes on the right side but he has made it clear he wants to play on the left doesn't he Yeah he has and Arsenal are the left winger don't they Yeah He would be a good sign very good I think Bellingham's been quoted as saying he's the most talented player at Madrid, which is quite something when you consider they've got Vinicius Junior, Mbappe, and himself, to name but three, and lots more talent.

21:27Alan Shearer:I think it's going to be really interesting to see Real Madrid this season because they weren't great last season. He's a totally different manager, obviously, Carlo Ancelotti. Freshened it up a little bit with Hausson and Trent Alexander-Arnold as well. Garcia does look like he could step up if they get injuries in certain positions. So they could push, I think, Barcelona this season. Although Barcelona, they look quite tasty.

21:54Gary Lineker:Yeah.

21:55Alan Shearer:Not in this tournament. It's a shame they're not in here, actually. But there we go. Real Madrid now play Borussia Dortmund. And that's on Saturday. Are you at that one, Alex? No, that was at the MetLife. So I'm going back to Orlando for Fluminense. Al Halal. But we're not going to see Jude against Job, which is really a shame. I know, Job, he got a yellow card apparently. He didn't know. Yeah, Kovacs, the coach told him at half-time. He says, you do know that means you can't play against Real Madrid. I mean, he probably absolutely got it. It's a shame, actually, isn't it? Yeah, we'll see it, won't we?

22:31But at some point, probably Champions League next season.

22:34Gary Lineker:You should have perhaps taught him before the game rather than at half-time.

22:40Alan Shearer:That is true. Good point, Alan. Two yellows, isn't it? Two yellows in the suspension, yeah. Gerasi was the style that he showed, obviously, for Borussia Dortmund. Now the Yemi here. Gerasi!

22:55It's taken barely 13 minutes for the go-ahead goal for Dortmund.

23:00Alan Shearer:I mean, he's been prolific this season. I had a little look, actually, at his stats because, obviously, we know he's scored a lot the last two seasons. But, in fact, you can go back five seasons And I did the maths, not exact, but something like 90 goals in about 170 games. And that's pretty good going, really good going. The only thing against him possibly is a late developer. He's in terms of how he's performing anyway. And he's now, what, 29? Maybe that's what, because obviously we're still waiting to see what Arsenal might do. other sides need to buy strikers as well Chelsea are trying to buy all of them I think every striker now I think they're trying to get João Pedro who might even play in his sign he's here he's here down the road he's actually already arrived yeah yeah yeah he's on the beach wow he's on the beach I saw him out my window you're supposed to go on the beach after you finish the tournament aren't you

24:03Gary Lineker:are you sure are you sure you're not on a holiday Alex I'm going to have to hide you from my Instagram story Take you out of my close friends, Alan.

24:13Alan Shearer:So my question is, there's a few sides looking for a nine. Is he worth taking a punt on? I really, I mean, he's got something, hasn't he? I mean, he's strong, he's quick. He's finishing, certainly yesterday was really good and it's been all season. He was prolific in the Champions League as well. what thoughts Alan as a fellow striker I like him

24:40Gary Lineker:if you compare him to I don't know I guess Cesc or Jokeres then yeah I understand that he'll cost a lot of money I guess that you said it earlier he's 29 years of age when I was looking at his stats I think perhaps the last three years he's been very very good in terms of goal scoring yeah late developer I think it would depend on what you could get him for would be the because but he's not had that much he's not been linked that much has he with a lot of maybe perhaps that he signed did he sign a new deal last year so he signed a four or five year deal last season

25:16Alan Shearer:I don't know whether he's got a buyout

25:18Gary Lineker:obviously it's going to cost a right few quid to get him out if he hasn't got a buyout

25:22Alan Shearer:I think Newcastle might go for him when Isak goes you're a bit worried about Newcastle aren't you Alan you're a little bit worried there's not been much happening there you were mentioning it on the chat the other day

25:33Gary Lineker:no no I'm a bit there's no sort of sporting director he's left there's no chief executive he's going I don't know I just think they lost out I guess to Umbrembo they've lost out on to Pedro heavily linked with James Trafford weren't they but I'd like to see a little bit more activity in Newcastle

25:52Alan Shearer:there's still time

25:53Gary Lineker:why don't you go and be head of recruitment at Newcastle don't you fancy that

25:59Alan Shearer:no

26:05Alan Shearer:he could have more influence on the podcast there's no doubt so what are your thoughts on Gaurasi I think he's a top player I think top class he certainly has been in the last couple of seasons in terms of when you mention a number nine I think he is one of the best in world football and I don't say that because sometimes we watch football and think oh he's easy on the eye I don't think he's that easy on the eye so sometimes the ball comes to him it might miscontrol it or sometimes I remember a game in the Champions League he had three chances to score in the first half and and he missed all three of them so he gets in the right positions he's good good composure as well when he gets it right um and i don't think at 29 it's too old i just think that's the modern game everyone wants resale value don't they but in terms of uh a player could come in and do it right now and especially the premier league is physical he's physical he can definitely do a job in the premier league but like you said al i think it depends on the price If you're talking 80 million plus, then no.

27:22If you can pick him up for 30, 40 million, then yeah. But are Dortmund going to let him go for that? Probably not. So it's a little bit of a conundrum. He's sort of in the middle. But if I was looking for a striker, he would definitely be on my list. I said about Osserman as well, when he went to Turkey. And no one was saying, oh, well, he's going to Turkey. He must be finished. He's not. He obviously went to a team which could pay his wage demands. but I think he could definitely do a job in the Premier League.

27:49Gary Lineker:His two finishes were absolutely outstanding. Two very finishes were different. When you look at the first one where he sort of watched the eyes and he whipped it and he was the keeper.

27:59Alan Shearer:Yeah, definitely did him, didn't he, the keeper?

28:01Gary Lineker:And the second one, the way he controlled the second one, because that's not easy when you're running onto a ball that way to guide it in and curl it as he did. With Rodriguez, Adiene still here. Kiyosu again I'm pretty certain that there's top Premier League clubs that are being or certainly looking at him without a doubt I guess it just depends on if they can get him out and at what price It was a good game though that Montreux did well Sergio Ramos came so close to scoring didn't he what he does best header in the 91st minute imagine to equalise and then they could have faced Real Madrid but no it was a It's a good game.

28:43Didn't happen. But Borussia Dortmund through. I love that Ramos wears the number 93 because that's the minute he scored his goal in the 2013 Champions League final. It's not a normal number to have on your back, is it?

28:57Alan Shearer:That's usually a kid that's about 15 years old that's like managed to get him to sneak into the squad. Let's finish with Inter, who went out to Fluminense. The Brazilians continue to impress. They look full of energy. Their pressing was really good. I thought and high and another European team to go out who I mean it is at the end of a very long season particularly for Inter as well of course because they went all the way in the Champions League as well what a legend Thiago Silva is 40 years old played through a hamstring injury can't wait to see him on Friday I don't know how you play through a hamstring injury yeah I mean if you're Thiago Silva you can do anything maybe is that your Is that your Chelsea connection coming in?

29:42I knew that was coming. We were basically talking about Inter Milan. Oh, Tiago Silva did. Yeah, he's a Fluminense captain. Fluminense beat Inter Milan, Micah. It's relevant. I was talking about Inter's long season and then he went straight to Fluminense. Oh, to your beloved Tiago Silva. I was going to give you space for after that.

30:07Alan Shearer:Lautaro Martinez was unlucky at the end. We're inside of the post. when it was 1-0.

30:12Gary Lineker:Martinez. Oh, it's the post this side.

30:18Alan Shearer:How much harder does he have to try? And then Hercules. What a name, eh? Hercules. Herculean effort in the 92nd minute. Decent finish it was as well.

30:30Gary Lineker:But look at the space that's opened up here for Hercules. Mikey, can I see behind your glasses, please? Nope. Not a chance. Oh. Are you hiding something? Yeah. I'm just intrigued.

30:45Alan Shearer:It was a long night, wasn't it? You want to be careful, Micah, because there's a reflection on those glasses. I hope there's no one else in your room.

30:55You said it was a good night.

30:57Alan Shearer:Yeah, let's look briefly at the quarterfinal draw. On one side, you've got Palmeiras against Chelsea. and we've got Al-Hilal against Fluminense on the other side of the draw quite tasty matches PSG against Bayern Munich and Dortmund against Real Madrid so some decent games there are your boys going to do it Alex? My boys they can hear me so they're just down the road no they'll do it I think Chelsea are going to find it very very difficult against them. I mean, they've got a real energy about them. Then we've got Al Halal. You'll definitely go with those, Alex, because they're going well. So I think it's going to be...

31:47Alan Shearer:Leibn's up now in the quarterfinals. Some big games to look forward to. Yeah, the other two are harder to predict, aren't they? What do you think there with PSG and Real Madrid? It's hard to go beyond PSG, I think. PSG. That's a great game, though, isn't it? PSG-Bain. Yeah.

32:07Gary Lineker:PSG for me I think yeah Bayern are still not right yet they've improved I think certainly bringing in Tars made a little bit of a difference but you can still get at them but Alisson's playing well but yeah I would still say PSG yeah they beat them 1-0 didn't they in the Champions League league phase

32:27Alan Shearer:league phase that was before they got really good yeah I think we all think Real Madrid will probably be in the semi-final as well, don't we? Yeah. I would say so.
