In short

The Rest is Football discusses PSG’s 4-0 Club World Cup semifinal win over Real Madrid in New York, sets up the Sunday final vs Chelsea, and briefly covers the England Lionesses’ Euros bounce-back after an opening loss to France.

Guests

Alan Shearer, Alex Alger, and Gary Lineker (hosts/pundits).

Key claims

PSG’s ruthless pressing and “haphazard” Real Madrid defending opened the scoring early; the match looked like a training drill by the end. Luis Enrique’s coaching has transformed Ousmane Dembélé into a team-focused, high-output star; Vitinha and the squad’s organization explain PSG’s sustained dominance since October. Chelsea’s best route is to be solid and counter-attack; they need Moisés Caicedo fit and “magic” from Cole Palmer.

Notable examples

Dembélé’s pressing leading to the first goal; Real Madrid’s tactical switch to four at the back leaving space in behind; PSG’s tournament thumpings (4-0 Real Madrid, 2-0 Bayern, 4-0 Atletico, 5-0 Inter). Lionesses: Lauren James’ standout goal and response after criticism.

2:50Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to The Rest is Football with Alan Shearer, Alex Alger and me, Gary Lineker. The final of the Club World Cup is set. Chelsea will play Paris Saint-Germain after PSG thumped Real Madrid in New York yesterday. Don't forget the final on Sunday is available to watch live and for free on the DAZN app. No subscription required. I mean, PSG have done a few thumpings, including the Champions League final, of course, including Inter Miami for one and now they've done the same to Real Madrid. I mean, wow.

3:24Gary Lineker:I expected them to win because I thought they would beat them but there's no way I expected it to be as convincing and as easy as that. I mean, at times it was men against boys, wasn't it? I mean, it really was. It could have been, should have been a lot more and PSG were absolutely outstanding again. Sorry, the phone's ringing. The phone's ringing. Whose phone's ringing? Is that yours, Alex? I'm so sorry. basically I put a skirt are you throwing in a friend no I put a white skirt with my towels this morning and I think they took it away with the laundry so I think they're calling to see if they found it that's so important you better you better answer it it's an emergency do you want to answer it it's my favourite skirt no answer it answer it this could be

4:04Alan Shearer:they start ringing do you want to call them back or should we carry on sorry everyone sorry but I do need that skirt back it looked like a towel that's the issue maybe they so you think they've used it as they think it's one of the hotel towns yeah yeah yeah and they've taken it away really 100 % that's what happened

4:24Gary Lineker:because I hung in with the towels it's far more interesting conversation without Michael isn't it yeah right back to the game because I was there yesterday 80 ,000 at the MetLife amazing it felt like the Bernabeu though it was mostly Real Madrid fans a small section of Paris Saint-Germain ultras

4:41Alan Shearer:that's because obviously Real Madrid as such an internationally renowned football club. I presume it wouldn't be like they've all flown in. It's because they're so universal, aren't they? Yeah, obviously we got that big team news before the game as well about Trent not playing, which was a big blow, I think, because they had to put... Any idea why? He said it was a knock, nothing serious. Maybe he didn't fancy a Kravitz Schellier. Don't blame him. He's a wise man. He's probably watching at home, thinking of the hotel. Actually, no, he was there. He did come with the team. But so that meant Fede Valverde, played it right back which he does play there a lot but he was out of his depth yesterday and then I think they really missed him in midfield as well so that was a bit of an issue for them but we didn't expect them to be that bad we know how good Paris Saint-Germain are but the first two mistakes they're opening two goals which is not good enough I think if Hausson had been playing because he was obviously suspended but um yeah Sencio that mistake can't be making that mistake against Paris Saint-Germain but and by the end of the game it just looked like a training drill that final goal.

5:41They were just playing, you know, so freely.

6:10Gary Lineker:And a tribute to Diogo Chota.

6:14Alan Shearer:I think that's something like in this tournament, six clear errors have led to goals, Real Madrid. Yeah, yeah. First defeat under Xavi. Yeah, he seemed really disappointed after the game. Like really down. But Real Madrid aren't used to getting thumped like that. But Paris Saint-Germain, so good. Only one goal conceded. That was in the Botafogo defeat. So they have lost. They have lost. They are beatable. That is not going to be easy for Chelsea, is it?

6:42Gary Lineker:What an unbelievable season they've had. I mean, incredible. I would never, ever have said that, was it? No one would, Alan, no one would. September, when Arsenal beat them in the Champions League, for them to kick on pretty soon after that and go and achieve what they have done. I mean, Luis Enrique, wow, what an unbelievable job he's done and done. Incredible.

7:05Alan Shearer:It's funny, isn't it? because managers with coaches, I always think, you know, it is obviously the most important role, really, at a football club. But normally, it's dependent on the players that you've got and stuff. And they've, obviously, they've lost some superstars in the last couple of seasons, most notably Messi, Neymar and Mbappe. But despite all that, he's managed to garner this team. He's managed to get, what he's done with Dembele, for example, really. I mean, Dembele, we all know the talent Dembele's always had. He's always probably been, And, you know, the potential superstar in him was always there.

7:40Alan Shearer:He went for that enormous fee, of course, to Barcelona. It didn't quite happen. A lot of injuries, a lot of injuries, which has to play a part. But it was always, you thought, his finishing not quite as good as it possibly could be. His final ball not quite possibly as good as it could be. And then Luis Enrique's got him to buy into being more of a team player. A slightly different role, playing a little bit more centrally. but even when he plays on the right, it's the same. That he's pressing. I mean, the first goal was caused by his pressing. The second, he finished brilliantly as well. I mean, he's turned him into the superstar that we thought we were going to get with Dembele that had never materialised until now.

8:22Yeah, his 35th goal of the season yesterday. And I asked Luis Enrique about him after the game. Just said, you've actually turned his season around. Take the credit here. He said, yeah, he's the best in the world. best in the world and he deserves to win everything but to think he'd fallen out of favour completely hadn't he or there'd been some disagreement we don't know exactly what happened left out the matchday squad for that game at the Emirates that they ended up ended up losing but whatever he said whatever he said it worked it was their 64th game of the season as well yesterday and they just look so good Vitinha unbelievable how does he have it looks like he always has so much time on the ball he has so much space and that heat as well so modest as well He's such a modest guy, but he's just an incredible player, isn't he?

9:06Alan Shearer:So incredibly well coached, Alan. I mean, you can't say that this is not down. I mean, I've always wondered how much difference a really good coach makes against... Of course, they all know their stuff, don't they? Generally, coaches that coach at the top. And I always think it might just make a little bit of difference. Someone like Pep Guardiola, obviously the genius that he's had. and it does make a difference, but they always tend to have the superstars. And I always wondered how much difference does it actually make? But when you see what Luis Enrique has done, you have to think to yourself, my goodness, the difference is astonishing.

9:45Gary Lineker:No, absolutely. And I think there's no doubt they mirror their manager, their coach. They do everything that he wants them to do in the tempo and the pressing and the passing and all of those things. And also, spare a thought for Mbappe, you know. I mean, he's left the building at PSG and won every trophy they've been in since he left. Not only that, they're a much, much better team. They look much more organised and everyone seems to be on the same page. And you've mentioned it, where that first goal and their pressing comes from. That wasn't quite right 18 months ago when other players were there.

10:27Gary Lineker:So for the manager to get everyone to buy into what he wants and the way they're doing it, it really is sensational.

10:35Alan Shearer:I mean, you mentioned Mbappe there. I think to myself, Mike would be in this element here because he would say, RPSG, a better sign than Keough Mbappe. And it actually would be hard to argue. Now, I love Mbappe as a footer. He's wonderful. He's an amazing talent. but would he buy into the way they play? Because he didn't necessarily do that previously under Luis Enrique. Have you ever seen that footage where he's actually talking to him man to man and basically saying you can do this and that and the other, but you've got to do this and the work hot side of the game? And he never, I'm not sure Killian's that kind of individual.

11:14Alan Shearer:I don't know. It might be being a bit unfair.

11:16Gary Lineker:No, I would go along with that. I think there's no doubt I'm the same as you guys I admire him I think he's an incredible player but I I suspect Enrique and what he's got and who he's got is a happier coach in terms of what he's trying to do and to get everyone to do it I'm not quite sure that Killeen would do that he's more of a free spirit I think whereas other people might have to do that person you might I'm not saying you'll be playing with 10 men but you might be playing with 10 and a half men when you haven't got the ball rather than 11.

11:51Alan Shearer:Or 10 men and a superstar.

11:52Gary Lineker:Well, possibly, yeah, exactly. But yeah, there's no doubt they're a better player in terms of who and what they've got now with the players. They really are really impressive. And Mbappe started with Garcia for the first time yesterday. And I don't think that really worked. Garcia's looked brilliant throughout the tournament, but he struggled yesterday. Well, they all struggled, didn't they? All those Real Madrid players did.

12:15Alan Shearer:I mean, they're so good, aren't they? Do you see the comparison to Pep's Barcelona, which everyone's saying? The football that they're playing, I think they play probably a little bit more on the counter. I think Barcelona were kind of, I mean, they do that as well, PSG. They got that really incredible high press, which obviously led to the first two goals. So they've got that, but they've also got this kind of fast counter-attacking style as well at times. So they can do both, but there are obvious comparisons. And you can go back to the Luis Enrique side at Barcelona that won the Champions League.

12:49Alan Shearer:Maybe that's a fair comparison because it's the same coach. Obviously, he had to deal with Messi, Suarez and Neymar and he managed to get them to buy into it. So, wow, what a coach he is and a great human being as well. Two more goals for Fabian Ruiz. Another brilliant Spanish midfield player. What they've got, like Rodri Ruiz, Pedri as well. and I mean Spain take some beating in the World Cup next summer I think.

13:17Gary Lineker:I think if you go right throughout their team you could put a huge plus to every single one of them and the job that they do whether it's two full-backs whether it's centre-halves midfield as we've spoken about sensational up front I mean right throughout the team there is no weakness in the team at the minute.

13:34Alan Shearer:So it was interesting prior to the game that Xavi Alonso changed tactics in this particular match obviously he's really well known for playing 3-5-2. And then for this particular game, he went with four at the back and it didn't really work. No, they left so much space in behind and you just can't do that against Paris Saint-Germain. So hopefully Chelsea will have seen that and not do that in the final because they could be in big trouble if they take the same approach.

14:02Gary Lineker:It's going to be a cracking final, isn't it? Two best teams in the tournament, I guess. Yeah, I mean, there's no doubt PSG will be favourites, I think. But Chelsea have improved massively as well, as we said the other day. So it'll be a good final.

16:51Alan Shearer:Welcome back to The Rest is Football with Alex Aljo, Alan Shearer and me, Gary Lineker. Right, let's talk about the final. It's coming up on Sunday in New York and it will be Chelsea versus Paris Saint-Germain. I think it's safe to say Chelsea are going to have their work cut out, aren't they? Yeah, they're the underdogs. They've got nothing to lose. No one expects them to win. Except for you. I don't know, like, spread them to win. I've seen that Paris Saint-Germain performance yesterday. But as long as they don't do what Real Madrid did, they can watch that game back and not take the same approach.

17:25Park the bus, take it to penalties. We might have a chance.

17:30Alan Shearer:Get Mourinho back. Exactly. Park the bus. But no, it's exciting. It should be a great final. But yeah, I can't see Chelsea beating them. But stranger things have happened in football. Champions League winners against an English Premier League club, which is obviously great for us. Conference League winners. Gary, please. Thank you. European champions. Yeah, conference league winners. Yeah, true. So two of the European trophies. Yeah, they need Moises Caicedo fit. I think with Moises Caicedo fit, they have a chance. If Andre Santos plays there, they don't have a chance. He's not a defensive midfielder, but obviously that's the only option.

18:08But I think it's touch and go whether Caicedo is fit.

18:11Alan Shearer:How do you play against this PSG team, Al?

Read the full transcript

18:13Gary Lineker:If they go head-to-head and match them, then I can see another result like Real Madrid. But if they're savvy and clever and sit and try and hit them on the break and soak up pressure, then, yeah, I would think they're in with a chance. I mean, the form and the confidence of PSG is pretty scary, you know. From October onwards, they've been the best team by an absolute mile, haven't they, anywhere. and as I've said you can go through every single player and they're all on form they're all playing to the best of their ability so it's going to be tough for Chelsea

18:49Alan Shearer:It's quite impressive isn't it that PSG have managed to sustain that form because the Champions League was the Holy Grail for them that's the one they needed to win and they've chased that trophy and they've had near misses and they've not quite made it to finals and then suddenly you can imagine the euphoria of winning that And then you sort of have a little break and then it's like, well, you've got to go again now in a new competition in the heat. You've got to give them huge, huge kind of pat on the back for the way that they've responded to lift themselves again. And obviously the credit must go to the coaching staff and Luis Enrique and his team.

19:30Alan Shearer:But it's an amazing achievement really to bounce back so quickly from that euphoria that they would have had, Alex. And the Portuguese players obviously had that euphoria of the Champions League final in Munich. They went straight to meet up with the national team and then go and lift another trophy in the same stadium, by the way, just to keep going. And then straight out to the Club World Cup. and they still look so hungry, so motivated to win more. It's relentless, absolutely relentless. If those Portuguese players, Paris Saint-Germain players, go and lift the Club World Cup, they'll have won six trophies this season.

20:06Incredible, really. Incredible.

20:07Alan Shearer:Look at some, I've got a little list of the results there. 4-0, as we saw, Real Madrid. 2-0 Bayern Munich. 4-0 Atletico Madrid. And 5-0 Inter in this tournament. And that is worth a sneeze. That's it. thank you

20:25Gary Lineker:yeah we've said it the manager it's how how do you get them to go again after reaching such a high as you said so it has to be down to the manager and all his staff and what they're doing behind the scenes amazing I think he gives the key as I saw him speaking in an interview just saying I give them time off I give them breaks I give them mini holidays because obviously if you keep going keep going you can't can you none of us can we've all got to switch off every now and then so obviously whatever he's doing is working.

20:55Alan Shearer:It needs really, doesn't it, I thought for Chelsea to have a chance in this, they need to be really solid and also they'll need maybe a little bit of magic from someone like Cole Palmer.

21:04Gary Lineker:Yeah, which is, it's not impossible. They're in with a fighting chance, there's no doubt about it because when you've got the likes of him and with the goals that we saw from Pedro and then yeah, a moment of magic, whatever, then that might just give them a little relief but it's going to be tough for them. Everyone's speaking about whether he'll play Giorgio Pedro and Liam De Lappe one or the other and I think pretty sure he'll have Giorgio Pedro on the left wing because he's been drifting there anyway Liam De Lappe up front Pedro Neto on the right wing who I'm actually about to interview so can I ask him about that yep yep going off to the I'm actually got a really nice day I'm going to the Chelsea Team Hotel to interview Pedro Neto in about 10 minutes and not the interview will you be wearing

21:47Alan Shearer:any Chelsea scarf no I'm wearing a neutral colour pink I've got lots of blue but I'm not wearing blue not your white not your white skirt well clearly not I was going to wear it if they found it I will be wearing

22:01Gary Lineker:my white skirt oh dear tragic tragic loss and then going to interview Ronaldo Nosario oh the greatest which is really exciting oh

22:12Alan Shearer:give him my best I mean he's a lovely lovely guy and he'll give you a great interview we love him one of the one of the absolute greats so yeah you'll enjoy that he's charming he really is before we go I must talk about the Lionesses response I was watching that game yes I thought they played really well because obviously they lost the first one to France and it's a tough group because you've got Netherlands, France and England and Wales which is their last game so they really needed a result in this one and I thought they bounced back brilliantly and obviously star performance from Lauren James

22:45Gary Lineker:I only saw the highlights Gaz but I did see their first game and they didn't deserve anything out of the first game and they were rightly criticised. So it's how you bounce back. And they certainly did that in really good style. So it's a result they needed. How hard is it to bounce back when you have obviously such a disappointing result in the opening game of a major tournament? You're being criticised. Lauren James was criticised, obviously kept her in the team. How hard is it to just go again and put in a brilliant performance like they did?

23:15Alan Shearer:It's something we're quite familiar with. That wasn't a dig, by the way, guys. I just know you're an expert. Well, in 1980, I mean, both the World Cups I played in, as well as the Euros, we never got off to a good start. I don't know about you, Alan, but we played Portugal, funnily enough, in 86 and we lost. In 90, we played against the Republic of Ireland, but we drew 1-1, but we still got a lot of stick. You do get that. But the tournament's not about the first game and that's, who won the last World Cup? Argentina. What was their first result? Saudi Arabia. They lost. They lost. So it doesn't matter.

23:50Alan Shearer:but the second game becomes key. You've got to do that and they show bottle. They show guts and you need that and they also showed a lot of ability. I thought they played really good football.

24:01Gary Lineker:They're an experienced bunch as well though, aren't they? Yeah. Which I guess when you've put in a poor performance and the criticism inevitably comes with that so I guess that didn't sort of bother them and that's where experience comes in so they needed it and they got it.

24:15Alan Shearer:I hasten to add that in the tournaments that we didn't start very well we didn't win them either. but that doesn't mean the Lionesses won't no it doesn't I mean you know look what they did four years ago if they could repeat that on foreign soil that would be an extraordinary achievement wouldn't it Alex yeah extraordinary goal as well wasn't it that opening goal from Lauren James you see it so good brilliant finish so good fantastic onto her left foot I mean she's very two-footed as well but certainly the pick of the goals and they could need that goal difference as well so important that they scored which is great and it gives me a chance to remind you about sister podcast, The Rest is Football, Daily Brightness, with Rachel Daly and Millie Bright, which is thoroughly entertaining.

24:56Alan Shearer:And they're across all aspects of the Euros and obviously have great contacts with the England players, the Lionesses as well.
