2:53Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to The Rest is Football with Micah Richards, Alan Shearer and me, Gary Lineker. We're coming up to Christmas and who doesn't love a Christmas quiz? So we're going to do one of our little special episodes. No cheating here, Al. Are you happy? Are you happy? Yeah, I can see you've got your clear glasses on today, Micah. No problem. Can I say that you shouldn't need to cheat with this. It's not too difficult, but you've got to get, as we always do, in the top 10. So I've got a list of names below me here. And the theme of this particular quiz is the top scorers of the Champions League in history.

3:38Alan Shearer:Now, some of the names will be very easy. They'll come to you at the start. But don't forget, once again, they've got to be in the top 10. So, Michael, you've got a question. Fire away. Champions League, not European Cup. Just the Champions League. Just the Champions League, that is correct. Not European Cup history. So, okay. Who wants to go first? Me. Of course you do, Al. I very much doubt either of you will make a mistake in the first few, but who knows? Let's find out. It might get a little bit tricky later on. Alan, first pick is? Has to be Cristiano Ronaldo. Absolutely right. He just sneaks in with 141 goals in first place.

4:27Yeah, it had to be.

4:28Alan Shearer:141 goals. Nice, easy start, Fran. I mean, Cristiano is in Saudi now and there's been that little bit of rumpus around whether he should have been playing in the World Cup or something. But what an unbelievable career he's had. Obviously, won the Champions League trophy on many occasions. Ballon d 'Or, numerous Ballon d 'Ors, but an incredible goal scorer. Unbelievable. I mean, to keep going and going and going and going every single season, the desire, just immaculate. I mean, obviously, he's unbelievably talented, Cristiano Maica, but I think one of the great things about him is that extraordinary drive that he's absolutely obsessed with numbers and scoring goals, isn't he?

5:14You know what? It's a little bit of a shame. So the new generation on social media only know him for scoring goals. But when I played against him, he was one of the trickiest wingers ever. He had stepovers, he used to run down the line, he had pace and he could finish. But obviously once he moved to that centre forward position, I mean his hunger for goals is just phenomenal whether you like Messi whether you like Ronaldo I know we're all big Messi fans but what he's done in terms of his drive and commitment to the game is second to none

5:49Alan Shearer:I think it's okay to think Messi's a better player but without disrespecting Cristiano because he's up there in the greatest players of all time as well absolutely fantastic when it comes to goals though absolutely right up there Micah we don't go with Messi Messi Messi can we get a bonus if we know how much it is how much what how many goals how many goals in the Champions League alright but it applies to both of you ok well hang on what did you hear say 141 for Ronaldo that's my bonus point well he just told you well there you go at least I remembered it I tell you what with any of the goal scorers you get an extra point if you name the amount of goals scored and it can be either of you it doesn't have to be the person that's guessed it.

6:37Alan Shearer:So that makes it fair. Just one guess each, that's all you get. And if you're spot on, you get a point. So 141 Ronaldo got and Messi's second. Oh, Michael, go first. Go on. How's it short? I'll go 130. 1-2-5. Unlucky both of you. 1-2-9, Michael. I'm sure I saw the other day a stat Messi's got 130 goals. Honest to God. Ah, my word. Right. Well, word on Messi. We've spoken about Messi for, I mean, two decades of joy he's given me as a football fan. And it's not just the goals with him, is it? Because what I like about watching him play is not even when he's incredible assists and we all know he's got this just unbelievable vision for the game and his deftness of feel.

7:28Alan Shearer:But for me, it's the little bits where he gets a ball, maybe on the halfway line, he's got three or four players around him and you think he can't get out of there. But he nearly always does. Truly remarkable. You mentioned the ability of these two players. What equally is impressive is the mentality. Yeah, absolutely. The mentality. I mean, they are just the mentality monsters, aren't they? The both of them. And they've definitely driven each other on over the years. Yeah, I think that's probably true. Back to you, Alan. Benzema. Well, Benzema, Alan, is in fourth place. Fourth. Fourth place, which is, I mean, really quite high.

8:12Alan Shearer:I'm not going to tell him any goals. Obviously, again, you got it, so you pick first, Alan. I'm going to guess 70. No, it's more than that. I've seen a stat couple of years he was on 85 I'm going to say 87 very close Micah 90 90 nearly a bonus point you've been close on both of them I mean Benzema was the player that he didn't sacrifice himself for Ronaldo but he used to fill in on that side didn't he drift out he was such an intelligent footballer and great, great for the team. He would have had a lot more as well, wouldn't he? I mean, not specifically playing for himself, but having to do that role of helping or sacrificing himself, as you said.

9:08Alan Shearer:Well, he showed that actually when Cristiano left, didn't he? That he suddenly started scoring more goals. Understandingly so, he went from provider, I think, to actually goal scorer as well. Shows how multi-talented he was, Mike. Technically, he was amazing. The way he used to drop off. I think Kane does it really well. Kane drops a little bit deeper, but when the ball was wrapped into him, his first touch was immaculate. And I said that thing a couple of years ago that I think Kane's better than him and Benzema basically could score as much goals because Ronaldo's there and I've got hammered for him.

9:44But yeah, he's a top player, all-round top player. I remember that game against Man City a couple of years ago. Do you remember when they had that big comeback and he scored that goal. Oh, yeah. Top player.

9:58Alan Shearer:Yeah, he really is. Okay, on to you, Micah, your turn. So easy so far, and understandably so. I know this one's definitely in because we get sent stats for Champions League every week. So Raul. Raul. Raul. Raul. That's a great shout, that, Micah. Yes, he's definitely in. You don't even need to check. He is in, Micah, at number five. Raul Gonzalez. Great shout, yeah. For a bonus point, you get to go first, Micah, because it was your pick. How many goals did Raul score? I don't have a clue on this one. I haven't got a clue. I just knew he was in the top ten.

10:4765. Alan? 70. Oh, Alan, Alan, Alan.

10:53Alan Shearer:71. Oh, so close. But no cigar. Oh, it's getting tense. It's getting tense. Raul's just missed a consistency, wasn't he, for year after year after year. They love him there as well, don't they? Yeah, he's one of the great Real Madrid heroes. The timing of his runs were up there with some of the best I've seen. He wasn't particularly fast, but he was always in the right position. Always. And he's finishing as well. Just some cute finishes around the goalkeeper. Yeah, he was a top player. Loved him. Absolutely loved him. Okay. Well, it's back to you, Alan. Last one, then we'll take a little break.

11:37Alan Shearer:So far, we've got Ronaldo, Messi, Benzema and Raul, who are four of the top five. Well, I would think this other guy's in. Lewandowski has to be in. Lewandowski, comfortably in. He's actually third. Is he? Lewandowski. So what was Rallo141? How many did you say Messi was? I'm not reminding you of any numbers now because that might help you because you get first pick here at trying to guess the correct number. So no clues from me, but the clues are in the order. So where was he third, he said? third and what was Messi Messi was Messi was second Ronaldo first I'm not telling you the amount of goals and the number of goals he's been around for years as well well that's okay with no notes I'm going to go 101 Micah I'll say 102 105 I'm not surprised I'm not surprised honestly it's not bad they're good guesses though aren't they I mean come on I mean talk about great goal scorer as a number nine Zalab yeah yeah you know the proper number nine yeah and still going I mean still going incredible that he's still going with all those youngsters around him must be heaven for it dude all his running and still scoring goals still playing as centre forwards go one of the best we've seen by the way before you go to the break I've still got two I know 100 % well it's alright getting cocky he's getting cocky he's trying to put some pressure on me.

13:10Alan Shearer:Yeah, it is. Well, the pressure will apply after we take this breather. Before we go to a break, this segment is brought to you by Specsavers, best worst team, the series that takes the worst football team in the country and tries to turn their fortunes around on and off the pitch. This season, they've taken on Worley FC in Brentwood, a grassroots club who finished last season with just four competition points and 18 defeats, conceding 81 goals along the way. Specsavers decided Wally needed a lift. Fresh ideas, maybe even a miracle. Manager Luke Armstrong has a new assistant in the dugout this season and you'll never guess, it's our very own Micah Richards.

13:56Alan Shearer:Come on! They really must be in trouble. That's all I can say. Wally, Wally, Wally, Wally, Wally! Come on the lads! It's about time you had another team for support. I mean what on earth Possess you to agree to coach The worst team You know what I love the game And it can only get better guys It's the worst team I say the best worst team Okay the best worst team Things can only get better I went down there I met the lads Great group of lads And some good players actually The manager Luke Is fantastic His enthusiasm for the game Is brilliant but they just needed a little bit of Micah Magic Je ne sais quoi Did they know who you were?

14:42Of course everyone knows who Big Mix is come on out but honestly they've got some really good players they've got a tricky striker a good midfielder and a good centre-half as well really good lads and yes I went down there I won't give you the score guys I won't give you the score but let's just say we've played some scintillating stuff Can you improve them, Micah? You know, what can you do? Because you're big on your tactics. Yeah, no, I do love it. I do love the tactical, but Sunday league players.

15:20Alan Shearer:Especially ones are at the bottom of the league. The pocket of space. What I'm talking about, overlaps. What I'm talking about, they look at me like I'm speaking a different language. But in terms of what I can do, it's just bring that energy, that belief. have that one-on-one sort of coaching with them and get them to believe in themselves. Because you know when you're, we've all, well, I've been relegated. Oh, you've been relegated as well, haven't you? Yes, I have. So you know what it's like. When you're down the dumps, you need a little lift. And that's what I'm there for. Luke is doing the majority of the work.

15:51The manager, like I said before, is really good. But I'm there just to give him a little bit of a lift, you know, give him that confidence. I hope they haven't looked at your coaching record in the Baller League this season. Oh, hold on. Hold on, Alan. Just so you know, last year for Depo Trio, I won the league. We've had a little bit of bump. Can I just stop you there? We won the league. We won the league, Michael. We won the league. Okay, because I knew you guys would do this. So I prepared for this. Name six Depo Trio players from last season. Since you guys did a lot of work, just name six.

16:28Half the team. We're no longer involved. My allegiances are with someone else now. and that someone else is above your team in the league. There's something going on here. When we were at Depot Trio, we won the league. When me and Gaz left, Depot Trio are now below the team that I'm with as well now. So there's something going on here. Can you coach players at that level? Can you improve them? In terms of improving players, of course you can. And they have to be receptive and they are. And they've got to enjoy it. Grassroots football, Mike, isn't it? Grassroots. It's where we all started, isn't it?

17:00Yeah. I mean, Grassroots is the best. Anyway, I thought it'd be nice for you guys. I've got a little present for you both. Hope you both got it in the post. Yes, Micah. Yes. Oh, there we go.

17:15Alan Shearer:Bawley, there it is. Bawley FC, Shearer and Lineker. What a front pairing that is. What a pairing. Do you think we'd improve it even at our age if we came along? Great stuff. Well done. Okay, Micah. Well, good luck and fair play to anyone taking on a team who let in 81 goals last season. But Wally, keep turning up. And with you on the touchline, they might start heading in the right direction. To follow their journey, search Specsavers Best Worst Team on YouTube, All the Graft, All the Heart, and whatever Micah tries next. This episode is brought to you by Barclays. That's right, because this year they're celebrating 25 years of supporting football.

17:57Alan Shearer:and let me tell you, they truly have made a difference. And don't forget, they ended up being the biggest ever commercial investors in UK women's sport when they started sponsoring the Barclays Women's Super League. But it's not all about the big leagues, is it, lads? There's no football without grassroots football. Well, that's right. I mean, we wouldn't have had the careers that we've had, guys. Not one of us, would they, without grassroots football? That's where it all started, the love of the game. I went back to Aylston Park Football Club, which is where I started to play. And all the lads were playing and the girls were playing all across everywhere.

18:31Alan Shearer:And it was so beautiful to see all these young people. One little lad came up to me, must have been about nine or ten. And he came over to me, he went, my granddad used to play with you. Now that really is grassroots stuff. It's why Barclays has invested millions into grassroots programs and community initiatives to give opportunities in football to those who need it most. Search Barclays Football to find out more. 20:55Alan Shearer:Welcome back to the Rest is Football Quiz with Alan Shearer, Mike Richards and me. Gary Lineker, we're halfway through. It's, as I expected, 100 % record so far. It might get a little trickier towards the end. No one has got the absolute correct number of goals per goal scorer as of yet for a bonus point. So let's say it's going with serve at the moment, to use a tennis analogy. Micah, top 10 Champions League goal scorers. We've got five of them. We need five more. It's over to you next. Before the break, you said you definitely got three more guaranteed. Two more. Two more. Two more. Don't overwrite it.

21:37Alan Shearer:What is that? Oh, balloons. He's got balloons. Balloons just went up. They weren't real balloons, were they, Micah? I don't know what happened there. For those of you not listening to this and not watching it, some strange-coloured balloons just went through Micah's screen. Who put them on there? That was definitely John or Harry. That must have been. It wasn't Harry. He sat here doing nothing. Okay, right. Go on, Micah. Proof of Pudding is in the eating. Erling Haaland. Erling Haaland. Definitely, because I saw it the other day, reported top 10. That's a bit of a gamble, that one, but... I already know.

22:15He might be 9 or 10, my guess is he? He's in the top 10. He's top 10 and I know he's in the top 10. He's 10. Oh, look at that! You've got to read your notes, how the stats get sent every week.

22:30Alan Shearer:For the number, you get first pick, Micah, on this. Were you paying attention to the number of goals he scored, apart from the position? for a bonus point that could make all the difference. I wasn't. I wasn't. What are you thinking, Micah? Take your time. I've got a tree on the couch. 51. Micah says 51. What do you say, Alan? 55. The correct answer is drum roll.

23:00Alan Shearer:55. 55.

23:05Micah has left the room. You need to read those notes better, Big Mix. You need to read those notes a little bit better. Like his left and right. I can't believe. Hey, I need to see what's behind that. He's Googling. John Harry is Googling. I am not Googling. Look.

23:23Alan Shearer:He's not Googling, I can see. Right. Well, advantage Alan here now. What a big difference that makes. So, Alan, you now lead by four points to three. I mean, what an achievement for Haaland though, really, to get that already at 55. He's 50 goals behind Lewandowski who's been playing forever, which is extraordinary really. How old is Haaland now? 25. Yeah, 25. 25. 55 Champions League goals already. Right. Over to you, Alan. Can you maintain that lead? All you've got to do is… I think so. I've had one name on my head for a while. that no one's said and I'm going to say Mbappe Kylian Mbappe yeah hmm okay well Kylian Mbappe is actually Alan in sixth ooh sixth who was fifth did we say Raul was fifth so Kylian Mbappe you get first go at the number of goals scored Alan so if Erling Haaland was 55 and he was in did you say he was in 10 10th, Erling Haaland.

Read the full transcript

24:3510th. Haaland was 10th. 69.

24:38Alan Shearer:You've gone with 69. What are you going to go with, Micah? 65. 65. I'll tell you what, Micah, you've been extraordinarily close on a number of occasions. And may I tell you on this occasion, you've been one-off again. He's 64. That's the third time you've missed by one, I think. What did I say about the bonus point? hey you never know it might you might turn it around I'm not going to guess anyone else is now I'm honestly oh you don't be so defeatist don't be so defeatist so another point for Alan Alan now leads 5-3 over to you you've got to get this right Micros you're doomed he plays for Bayern or used to play for Bayern

25:28Muller

25:29Alan Shearer:Thomas Thomas Muller. Garak T, I saw it, I saw it, it's there. No, you're absolutely spot on, he's in ninth place, Micah. Oh, Muller. Now I'm snookered, guys, I'm snookered now. you're not snookered because you've got to go at guessing how many goals he's managed to score and if you do that, you're back on terms, you're back on level terms. So how many goals did Thomas Muller score? What was Haaland, Al? He won't, he's not going to tell you how many goals Haaland scored is if you can remember Haaland was 85

26:10Alan Shearer:How many how many goals over what has been an absolutely fabulous career Great shout Thomas Muller by the way Yeah I knew that I saw that one before 55 55 Thomas Muller has gone for and Haaland 55 56 well I mean two very very good guesses I have to say for one of you it's bad news for the other it's equally bad news because you both missed out he actually got 57 oh my god oh well but it's still a point for you and you're still in it Mike it's not all over yet you've got 8 out of 8 so far There are two names remaining. And well, this is where it gets interesting because there's a lot of names you could go for here.

27:04Alan Shearer:I've got a list of 20 of the tops. But at the moment, you've got eight of the top 10. And it's back to you, Alan. I've got three players in my head. Are you going to mention them all out loud, though? No, I'm not. But I think Micah might have said him if it was true, though, because he works with them every week. and he hasn't said him yet I don't know whether he's like keeping this one up his sleeve or what

27:36Thierry

27:38Alan Shearer:Thierry Henry yeah Thierry Henry has indeed scored a lot of goals but not quite enough to get him in the top 10 Thierry Henry is in 12th place Alan I'm afraid so you remain on 5.5 And Micah is on four points. If he gets his next guess right, he will tie you. It's now over to you, Micah. There are two more names in the top 10. Can you name one of them? Now I'm struggling.

28:15Ibrahimovic?

28:18Alan Shearer:Ibrahimovic. Great shout, Micah. Micah. And one of the greats, you know, he's played for so many clubs and played for lots of clubs in the Champions League. And he's scored a lot of goals, but not quite enough to get him in the top 10. He's in 14th place. Well, actually, he's tied in 13th place with someone else that I'm not going to mention their name. I was just going to ask you who. Hey, Al, don't worry. Quizmaster extraordinaire. Ibrahimovic, 49 goals in 14th, or actually level 13th, I should say. So, right. Okay, back to you, Alan. Left field. Van Nistelrooy. Rude Van Nistelrooy. Oh, that's a shout.

29:00Alan Shearer:That is a shout. That is a shout. Yeah, with, again, more than one club. And I think you'll find, Alan, these actually in seventh. Yay! Go on, make me see. Van Nistelrooy. I think you're in trouble here, Michael, because you're actually now two points behind. He's done. He's done. Not necessarily. We've got one named Raymond. And don't forget, if he guesses the number of goals, that'll be worth a point. We'll keep him in it. But he needs to do that with at least one and then get the next one. So you're not quite out of it yet. How many goals did he score? That's what the guess is for an extra point.

29:43Alan Shearer:You need to get that right. So Alan goes first because he named Van Nistelrooy. So you get first pick of the number of goals that Ruud van Niestelrooy scored in the Champions League. I'll tell you now, he's in seventh place. And if you get this right, you've won. There's no way Micah can catch you. Don't be Googling. 58. Alan says 58. What do you say, Micah? I've got one down and one up. 59. I'll tell you what, that's extraordinary. Absolutely extraordinary that you've been within one so many times, Michael. In 60. 60.

30:30Alan Shearer:You're not quite out of it. If you get the last name here and the correct number of goals, you'll tie Alan. So what was Van Nistelrooy? Van Nistelrooy. If you've forgotten already, I've told you. Yeah, go on. Just give it to me. What was he? he was a very very good centre forward yeah and look you should have remembered it Micah so you've won more and that person is in 8th place in the all time list of Champions League goalscars Micah you need this name who is it can I have a little bit of a clue no you know that game that box what was it a simplify can I have a simplify no ok can you name the teams you played for just a clue no you don't get any clues you've won nearly every one of these quizzes anyway can I have one team you played for no no no it's not fair

31:25Alan Shearer:it's all gone quite over there it's all gone quite over there lift your head up so I can see your eyes

31:37I promise you I show you everything down here below that's better that's better Happy, happy.

31:44Alan Shearer:Yeah, happy, happy. Go on, Micah. You need this. Oh, come on. I should know this. Come on, rattle off some names now. Micah. I know it's not Trezeguet. I know it's not Del Piero. It's not Thierry. We could stand here for a list and name players that are not in the top 10 forever. That's quite easy. It won't be Bergkamp. If you don't worry, I'm definitely missing my trim. Oh, sorry.

32:12Shevchenko. Bam! Yes! Shevchenko! He's definitely in! Shev... I'm dead! Wow. Shevchenko is at eight! Oh my word!

32:23Alan Shearer:Where did that come from? Shevchenko! How the fuck have you pulled in? I saw the list! I saw the list! This is it now, Micah. If you name the number of goals that Shevchenko has scored, it's a tie. If you don't, Alan wins whether he gets it right or not. What was the... Not telling you any of the numbers. That's how we've worked it all through the quiz. Van Nistelroi, Van Nistelroi. Van Nistelroi was 50... What did you say? Al said 50... Eight. You said one up or one down. You went for 59, I think, didn't you? So it's got to be up. So I'm going to go 60. What are you going to go, Al? No, did you say that, though, Al?

33:09Too late. Too late if you said 60. No, no, no. There's a big jiggery pokery going on here. Guys! No, no, no. We can't have that. We've got to be true. Because I don't know. Micah.

33:22Alan Shearer:I'll say he said everything. He said everything. He said his life. Micah, because of that, I'm going to give you, it's up to you entirely whether you stick with 60 or you change your mind. What did I just need? I can't tell you. Okay. I can't tell you. That's the rules right the way through. Guys, did you see Shevchenko was in what position? Are you trying to help him here? No, not at all. Shevchenko was eighth. Eighth, okay. He was eighth. And Van Nistelrooy, you said, was 59 or 60, Al? 68, I said. And I went one up, so I'll be 59, but it was 60. He's below him. 59. Alan, what you got? 56.

34:12Alan Shearer:Well, Mikey, you know when you said 60? Yeah. I'd be right. And then you changed your mind. And you changed your mind to 59, right? If you'd have stuck with 60, you would now be tied with Alan Shearer. Oh! You changed your mind! I never changed your mind! He basically gave it to you on a plane. He said to me, your face has given it away. You're a great face reader, Micah. You fucked yourself. Unlucky. Oh, hang on a minute. Oh, no, you can't do that. I think you read the wrong name. I've read it the wrong way around. No, I've got to redo it. Oh, fuck it. What?

35:08What are you doing? I messed up Mike I made it one way round the quiz master has fucked up Mike

35:18Alan Shearer:I'll never make I'll never be a quiz reader get him so it was actually 59 yes oh my god if you see the numbers on my list here are miles away from the actual name so I read it along the wrong line so it's my bad my bad so it was Van Nistrooy was 60 Shevchenko was 59 I don't know where that leaves the quiz I hope I got the ones before that right I'm not sure because they're so far apart I can't see very well these days lads but well done Micah that was amazing so it's a tie so we go into the first person that names someone you both get alternate goes and the first person that's right although if it's the first person to go the other person will get a chance to join nice and quick give me some names I don't need number of goals Mo Salah Mo Salah yes 11 boom that wins me no he's got he's got a go as well so what do I need to get in a top in a top 20 he says whoever names it first I said but the other person will get a go this is a shambles of a quiz by the way absolute shambles from the quiz master but what do they have to be in a top what in top 20 that's what I've said oh Sergio Aguero 100 % in top 20 Aguero, 16.

36:37Alan Shearer:Harry Kane. Harry Kane, 18. Yes. Micah. Didier Drogba. 19. Yes. Alan. What's that? Hey, hey. Can we get a VAR on Alan's eyes, please? Can we get a VAR? We did a close-up. Hey, he does every so slight. Just because you know what you've found, you've got a computer there. His eyes are veering off ever so slightly to the right. I saw it there, guys. I saw it. I've got to hurry up. I need to get a train anyway so I've got to hurry up go out

37:11he's been rumbled he's been pushing me in there Del Piero's a guess who?

37:19Alan Shearer:Del Piero Del Piero is not in there Micah this to win Antoine Griezmann Griezmann Antoine Griezmann he's at 19th Micah right I'm off that's what I do that's what I do Alan Shearer got rumbled the VAR show he didn't know where to look he didn't know what to do I will say I got rumbled as well as a quiz master that was a shambolic performance from me we'll call it a day there well done Mike well done Alan both of you really good going and absolute shambles from me but there we have it goodbye goodbye from me
