1:25Alan Shearer:Football trivia quiz, lads. I'm going to be the host again for this one, but then I think in future ones, maybe one of you two can take the host role and I'll step in for the quiz as well.

1:37Gary Lineker:I hope to do better than the last one because I failed miserably.

1:41Alan Shearer:No, I thought you both... I mean, Mike was astonishingly good, but I thought you actually both did pretty well. You always got, I think, pretty much always in the top 20. So today's we're going to discuss, because we've just finished the transfer window, we're going to do the top 10 most expensive transfers in Premier League history in terms of arrivals. Let's just give you a little inkling. Before we do that, you know all about that, Alan, don't you? I was just about to say,

2:09Gary Lineker:once you've been the British record transfer, once you've been the world record transfer, then you tend to keep an eye on these things, lads, you know? What an idiot. How much did you go for, Al? 3.6 million in 1992.

2:27Alan Shearer:Yeah, you couldn't buy in a crappy 62 fullback for that now.

2:33Gary Lineker:And what was it? 15 million in 1996.

2:36Alan Shearer:15? God, blimey, that was inflation for you. Good business, eh? I reckon in today's money, you'd be worth 16 and a half million. Did you actually get bought anywhere, my cubicle? I'm trying to think No, I never did Well that was a good question then, wasn't it? No, it was a good question, yeah What were your free transfers? I was rumoured, wasn't I? Rumoured to go to all the big clubs 20, 25 million But then in a takeover at Man City So I didn't need to go anywhere And then I went on loan to Fiorentina But that was a loan fee I think it was like a million pound loan fee I only had a year left as well And then I went to Villa on a free So I'd never been bought, no.

3:23Alan Shearer:God blimey, you were a bargain.

3:24Gary Lineker:So basically, you got all the transfer money. You just wedged it yourself, didn't you? That's what you mean.

3:34Gary Lineker:Well played. What about you, Gaz? What was it like in the 50s? Were there transfer fees back then, were they? Oh, listen to him.

3:44Alan Shearer:We played together, Al, for fuck's sake. We played in the same team. We cut this out. I went from Leicester to Everton. I'd ended my contract, but in those days, there was still a fee to be paid. It wasn't like it is now. So I've told the story before, but when you end up in a tribunal with the two clubs can't agree, and I went to Lancaster Gate, and Gordon Milne, the Leicester manager, stood up and said, well, they're getting a great player. He's going to be one of England's top scorers. He's fantastic. He's been brilliant for us. He's a perfect professional, blah, blah, blah. And I'm thinking, oh, that's nice.

4:22Gary Lineker:Thank you very much, Gordon.

4:24Alan Shearer:And then Howard Kendall gets up and he went, we're taking a real chance on this kid. He's not proven at all. He said, honestly, I can't see him playing much this season. He's just a gamble for the future. So I don't think we want to pay that much. And I was like, oh, my God, what have I done? Signing for them. Doesn't even like me. And then they agreed somewhere in the middle. it was actually 800 ,000 quid out. 800, what a bargain. So anyway, so I'm going away and I'm thinking, right, Everton have paid more than they wanted to pay for me. And I've got to go on the train with our Kendall up to, back up to Merseyside, up to Southport, actually.

5:02Alan Shearer:On the way to the train, he says, let's go into Sainsbury's a minute. I went, oh, okay, okay. And he buys about five bottles of champagne and we drank them all the way up. And he went, don't you listen to any of that shit I was saying in there. It was just to try and get the price down. So then I went to Barcelona. That was, I think, 2.2, 2.3, something like that. Amazing. Wow. Yeah.

5:24Gary Lineker:Isn't it crazy? Come to think, when you come to the end of your contract, the club still owned you and the other clubs had to pay a fee for you.

5:32Alan Shearer:Well, it was only after the Bosman thing that all changed when he took it to court and got it overturned. And since then, I mean, it's still mad. I think there'll be a day in football where this whole transfer thing, We talked about it the other week, didn't we? Like your pieces of meat and stuff. And you have some sort of say in your own future. Right. Yeah. Let's get on with today's quiz question. I've already told you what it is, so I hope you've not been Googling. Who are the top 10 most expensive transfers in Premier League history? That's in terms of arrivals into the league, not sales. I have got about 20 names down here, including the top 10.

6:10Alan Shearer:So it'll be like last time. You get a point if you get one in the top 10. No points if you don't. As Micah won last time, I'm going to give Alan the chance to go first. Is that fair, Al? Well, I went first last time and messed it up as well, didn't I? Yeah, with a cherry on ring. I did. I did last time, didn't you? I did. Hold on, sorry. It's arrivals into the Premier League, not departures. Yes, arrivals. You've Googled the wrong thing, haven't you? No cheating. No cheating. I never cheat. No way. Go on then. Do you want to go first? Alan, you can go first.

6:48Gary Lineker:The obvious one, Isak.

6:51Alan Shearer:Yes, he's actually number one, Isak. Gotta be. He's not played yet, obviously, Alan. Do you miss him?

6:58Gary Lineker:No, not yet. Did you not say I sent a forward last weekend? Score that wonderful goal.

7:06Alan Shearer:I certainly did. And the price was a hunt, Apparently, officially, it was 144 million. I presume that means with all the add-ons, if they apply. Amazing. That's euros, by the way. We've got the answers in euros.

7:20Gary Lineker:What are we in euros for? We're still in the pound in our country. What are we doing in euros for? I don't know.

7:24Alan Shearer:This is what producer John has given me. I'm not going to work it out into pounds. But anyway, it's just a bit less in pounds.

7:32Gary Lineker:It's about 125 million pounds. I think that's what it was, yeah. he's a mathematical genius yeah

7:43Alan Shearer:right Micah I'll be surprised if you don't get this immediately the one that finishes second oh you'd be surprised oh you threw me off there why have you not gone nervous now well I was going to say the Liverpool theme I was going to go with this you were going to well yes I am going to because Liverpool theme yes yes yes I think most of us know that they were the top two transfers in in Premier League history. Oh, because I thought you was alluding to a City player or an Arsenal player the way you said, oh, you're trying to throw me up there, guys. No, I most certainly didn't, Mike, and I would never do that.

8:20Alan Shearer:I want you to know that. But what I was trying to say was that actually, I think it's quite easy because it's been so widely spread that these were the two most expensive transfers in history. So Florian Verts, who's not had, I mean, they've won every game and I think he's played okay, but he's not taken the Premier League by storm just yet.

8:43Gary Lineker:I still think they're trying to work out the best system. It hasn't worked for them as yet. They haven't seen the best of Salah yet. Certainly not Vert. Ekotiki has done really well. So, yeah, I still think they're working on that balance. And they're going to have to start again when Isak goes into the team because there's no doubt he'll start most of the games. Good. But he'll come good, Vert. He's too much of a good player not to come good. They're just finding it out. They're working it out. Yeah. I think he just needs to up the tempo a little bit. I feel like when he's on the ball, he's taking too many touches.

9:20You can't do that in a Premier League. And, yeah, he'll be a top player. I have no worries whatsoever about this.

9:27Alan Shearer:Me neither. Back to you, Alan. I'm going to go for... If he gets third, yeah. then we know he's been cheating.

9:39Gary Lineker:No, because, you know, this is what my thing is. I keep going on about... You remember when we said about the ESAC deal, when Newcastle were reportedly saying it's 150 million or what? So I kept going back to the midfielders, didn't I, and say, well, if he's going for that for a midfielder, then... So I'm going to say Enzo Fernandes. Oh, are you? Oh, don't tell me that's wrong.

10:02Alan Shearer:I've got to tell you, Alan, that that is right. Oh! Of course it is. What a shout. What a shout, Alan. And he backed it up, so I believe you. I believe you. I believe you. Do you think the old man

10:18Gary Lineker:is capable of cooking? I'm honest, yeah, yes. Look here, look. There's no phones or anything around. But, hold on, there's a screen in front of you. What's that? It could just be on your screen. It's just down here. It's underneath here, look. I believe you I believe you

10:37Alan Shearer:Over to you Micah Richards Pressures on No I don't You don't get any Extra points for Getting the Who's actually Fourth But as long as You get top 10

10:47Gary Lineker:Was he third Gaz was he Yeah he was third I should have said

10:50Alan Shearer:Yeah I should have said Obviously Vurts was 125 million euros Enzo Fernandes 121 million euros Just He was just over 100 million quid So His mate His mate Kaiseido was big money wasn't it he's mate he's got to be in the list are you no no no no no I'm going to go safety Jack Grealish you've gone Grealish I've gone Grealish okay yes absolutely he's four so we're getting him in the order so far what was Kaiseido oh you can't tell me can you I was thinking Kaiseido but I went to safety with Grealish but I wanted to save that till later to be honest well you've just saved it for Al I think yeah

11:32Gary Lineker:he's trying to lead me in there isn't he

11:34Alan Shearer:yeah I mean you could have been clever there and got one that was outside the top 10 I think Gary's trying to set me up

Read the full transcript

11:42Gary Lineker:then was Christ but I think he might be in there you know Kaiseido I think if I remember rightly it was around about 100 million had a bit of a slow start but he's he's hit top notch now and he's doing really well so I think I'm going to say Kaiseido actually you think you're going to say it or you are going to see it? I'm going to see it, yes.

12:02Alan Shearer:Okay, yeah. Kaisado is in there.

12:04Gary Lineker:Yeah.

12:04Alan Shearer:He's actually the sixth most expensive player bought from Brighton, of course. Chelsea, and you're right. It's around a million quid. So he goes in there. Alan, yeah, you've got that. So you can thank Micah for that. What a need to do.

12:24Gary Lineker:What a need to do. I think I've got another one up my sleeve that I can go straight away, but then I'm struggling. Okay. Micah. Ready? Yeah. Din, din, din, din, din, din.

12:35Alan Shearer:Din, din, din, din. Din, din, din, din. Din, din, din, din. Din, din, din, din, din. Go on. Rice, rice, baby. Oh, fuck. He was the one I was going to say. Rice, baby. 100 million quid, wasn't he? Gas, someone along those lines. I was humming the wrong tune there. I thought you were going... you were actually doing rice baby weren't you I didn't what do you think you were soup what do you think am I steaming up here can you see I'm thinking it's steaming up in this room I don't know what's going on

13:17Alan Shearer:I don't know what tune I was thinking of he's actually in fifth place oh you just spot my water

13:23Gary Lineker:I was in the wrong tune

13:27Alan Shearer:Declan Rice was actually the same price as Caicedo. 116 million euros.

13:32Gary Lineker:What's up with the world paying over 100 million for midfielders, man? Come on.

13:38Alan Shearer:World's gone mad. Right, you've got the top six between you. I'm struggling now. I'm not going to lie. I tell you what, let's take a break because you might need a little bit more thinking time to get the remaining four back shortly. This episode of The Restless Football is powered by NordVPN. With the new season underway, we're online more than ever. Premature fantasy wildcards, ticket hunts, transfer gossip, usually on Wi-Fi you probably shouldn't trust. I mean, when we do that fantasy football in the pub, I didn't get any team together, midfielders in, attackers in defense.

14:26But most importantly, the captain, making sure nobody can see my captain's choice.

14:32Alan Shearer:Yeah, it's generally pretty predictable, I would say, though.

14:36Gary Lineker:I keep refreshing my phone in terms of the transfer gossip that's around as well.

14:40Alan Shearer:Yeah, that's where NordVPN comes in. It hides your IP, encrypts your data, and keeps everything you do online private, even on public or hotel Wi-Fi. 15:21Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome back to The Rest is Football with Micah Richards, Alan Shearer and me, Gary Lineker. We're meandering our way through the quiz. The boys have done excellently so far. 100 % records. They've got three apiece, but we've got four more players to get out of the top 10 most expensive transfers in Premier League history. Alan it's your go next you said you were going to go with Arras baby I was but you can't because Micah did it so I need someone from 7, 8, 9 or 10th

16:00Gary Lineker:this is where it gets tight yeah it's a bit tricky now

16:03Alan Shearer:I think the first six were pretty easy have Liverpool done it three times this summer

16:08Gary Lineker:with Ekiteke Wurt and Isak have they it's not a bad shout not a bad shout I've got another one that I was thinking as well. Well, maybe keep it to yourself, Al. It's Eketike. What was he about? Did they have to pay about 85 for him, did they? I'm going to go Eketike. Okay. You sure? Yeah, I'm going to say Eketike. He's 10th. Oh, come on! Sporty, sporty, sporty man. Three times. I mean, that's incredible. Three times this window, they've got the all-time...

16:48Alan Shearer:I mean, wow. They have gone for it, haven't they? Al's been doing his homework, to be fair. He knows what's what. I think he's been one of the most impressive signings of the summer. I think he's probably looked better than... I mean, we all knew he was talented. And I think I remember you talking about him, Mike, that Thierry Henry was saying this, but maybe sometimes he can look a little bit clumsy. But I've not seen that aspect of it. but I've seen a lot of positive aspects. Yeah, agreed. I think he's even better. I settled in so well because to come into the Premier League as Virts is finding out, it's difficult.

17:26But what he adds is something different. He's better in the air than I thought he was. Obviously, being that size, you'd think that they should be good in the air but he throws himself about. He's stronger than I thought. I don't know he was quick and wanted to run him behind and he could link up and all that sort of stuff. But he's more aggressive than I thought. And I think, yeah, he's been outstanding, to be honest. He's been the best player in the Premier League.

17:52Gary Lineker:It's going to be fascinating to see how they get them all in. And I know they've got a lot of games and they'll play ridiculous a number amount of games this season because they'll go far in competitions. But you always have a go-to, don't you? You have your best. And it'd be really interesting to see how he fits them all in there. I'm going to tell you now before you Isak's going to end up playing on the left in some games like he did for Newcastle and Isak loves that left hand side anyway and they've still got someone big and strong up front not always Isak's going to be the number nine is he going forward but at times Isak's going to play on the left instead of Gekpo

18:29Alan Shearer:Yeah Gekpo's been good for them as well Yeah very good I mean the thing is nowadays with the amount of football they play we talked about this didn't we during the Club World Cup they've got to have big squads You need two players in pretty much every position, don't you? But it'll be interesting to see what their best side is. It'll be the most interesting thing.

18:49Gary Lineker:Salah, Beka TK, Isak, Wurt. That's madness.

18:54Alan Shearer:That's madness. It is. Right, over to you, Big Meeks. Pressure's on. Come on. There's a couple I'm thinking of. You know what I'm going to tell you? Who are you thinking of? I'm not telling you this time. No, don't fall into that trap, Micah. Don't fall into that trap. I'm not telling you. But I remember a lot of people talked about Darwin Nunes. I'll say that. But Kai Havertz, I remember he went for a lot. I don't know how much it was, but I just remember people, when they signed, saying it's too much money. You're doing too much thinking out loud here, by the way. I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know.

19:30I'm going to go Havertz. Havertz? Yeah.

19:33Alan Shearer:Have it, Micah, have it. Nine. Where is it? Oh, nine. Nine. Havertz was 100 million euros so that'd be 80 odd million wouldn't it oh wow this is impressive lads I mean there's only two names left and it's over to you Al but it must be very close though now you know in terms of the they are close now the millions because

20:02Gary Lineker:did you say Havertz worth can we work in pounds please we're not in fucking Europe we're in England

20:07Alan Shearer:I've got a list in Euros

20:08Gary Lineker:I know this podcast goes all around the world including Europe but we're actually working from England can we work in pounds?

20:16Alan Shearer:Yeah I'm not sorry about that Alan it's in Euros but I suppose a lot of the times maybe that's what football deals with in Europe I've no idea the list we've got is in Euros so you're going to have to live with it and you're not doing too badly anyway because you've got eight of the top ten between you so if you get this Alan could you give us a clue Like, what the number? A clue! You're eight for eight, the pair of you. You don't need any clues. I'm struggling. Well, you know what numbers you've not got yet. You've got it seven and eight, isn't it? Yeah, but I don't know now. Well, that's the idea of a quiz, is to not absolutely know every answer.

20:52Alan Shearer:Otherwise, it's boring. Anyway, it's Alan's turn. If you both get... We'll go on now until someone wins. Okay. So if you both get it, I'm going to look for the 11th place. Yeah. As a playoff. Because he's only Googled top 10. That's perfect. Yeah, let's do that. What was that about?

21:11Gary Lineker:Al, over to you. Right. I'm actually starting to think of Man United. About 80 odd million pounds, 90 odd million euros. What about Anthony? Oh, good shout. Good shout. Oh. Oh, no. What a shout. What a shout. Eleventh. Oh!

21:46Alan Shearer:Get you! Get you! Over to you, Micah, for another win for two for two. Two for two. This is it. I'm going to go with Romano Lukaku. He's Googled it. He's cheating. Well, you don't know it's right, Alan. If it is right, he's done it.

22:05Gary Lineker:He's been Googling. There's no chance I need to Google the top 10 most expensive players.

22:12Alan Shearer:Romelu Lukaku was in 17th. No! I lie. He was in 7th, bless. No!

22:23Gary Lineker:Oh, Micah!

22:25Alan Shearer:Great shout, Lukaku. Great shout. Oh, my goodness. What a victory. He was also in 17th, Micah. So I did jest, but because he was, when he went Everton to Manchester United, he was 84.7 million euros. And when he went from Inter Milan to Chelsea, he was 113 million euros. So combined, he'd be the record, wouldn't he? Yeah, he would. He'd be the record, I would imagine. He'd cost some money wherever he's gone. Can I try and guess the other one? Actually, do you know what we're going to do here, right? because I feel for Alan a bit. He looks a bit down. What we're going to do is give him a chance to equalise it because we actually need the top 10.

23:10Alan Shearer:I think that's how we did it last time. We did it until we had all the top 10. So if Alan gets this, he ties you and then we'll carry on. So Alan, to remain in the competition, I need to know who was eighth.

23:29Gary Lineker:well I said about the Man United theme so I'm going to stick with it so I might say Pogba that's definitely that was my next one

23:39Alan Shearer:that was your next one Michael Paul Pogba is the correct answer it's a fair draw Mike a fair draw 5-5 we're not having a draw we're having a penalty shootout and this is how it works this is how a penalty shootout

23:56Gary Lineker:I get it because I got the 11th as well with Anthony. No, that was early. That was an mistake.

24:02Alan Shearer:Listen, I've already given you an olive branch. Right, here we go. Whoever gets the next highest, I've got the top 20 here. We know Anthony's 11th, but whoever gets the next highest after that is this week's winner. That's a scandal. So I want to name each. And Alan, you still, actually you went last, didn't. No, you went last because, so, Micah, it's your go first.

24:30Gary Lineker:Oh, here we go. Oh, sorry, I thought he was asking the question. I've just got to... We thought your mic was broken then.

24:37Alan Shearer:I think he just paused to Google the top 20. Look up. Get your head off. What are you looking at?

24:44Gary Lineker:What are you looking at? You've been looking down for the last 20 seconds. You're looking at your phone. Bring it back to me. He's been cheating.

24:52Alan Shearer:You can't do that, Micah. I'm sorry. it's Alan's turn to go first you've been scratched off

24:58Gary Lineker:I'm not having that I'm not having that I'm gonna go I've got two names in my head I'm not gonna give the other one because he might get it I'm gonna go Sancho

25:13Alan Shearer:Sancho do you want me to tell you where he is now or shall we wait until Micah's choice I'm gonna wait until Micah's choice because he is in the top 20 Alan I'll give you that I'll tell you that much That means he's not number 12. I'm not saying. You said Sancho. So if I remember correctly, Sancho only went for about 70 million. So I could beat that. Definitely could beat that.

25:36Gary Lineker:We're working in Euros, don't forget. Oh, yes. Good point. Harry Maguire was higher than him. Ooh. Was that according to Google? Google!

25:52Alan Shearer:Come on, Micah. He's looking down again, Al. He's looking down. Guardiola was big, wasn't he? Guardiola was big. Van Dyke was 75 because him and Alisson came same time, didn't they? Same window. I'm going to take a punt on a Man City. Pepe, though, he was big, wasn't he?

26:15Gary Lineker:Yeah, he's a good one on your list. I'm going to go with Guardiola. I think Guardiola was more than Sancho.

26:22Alan Shearer:Right. Jadon Sancho cost Manchester United 85 million euros. Josco Gvardia cost Manchester City 90 million euros. Was he 12th, was he? You shall not be the wastebuster. Gvardia was 12th.
