0:32Gary Lineker:Well, that's cool. No, you don't understand. It went perfectly. Real offer, down to the penny. They're picking it up tomorrow. Nothing went wrong. So, what's the problem? That is the problem. Nothing in my life goes to smoothie. I'm waiting for the catch. Maybe there's no catch. That's exactly what a catch would want me to think. Wow, you need to relax. I need to knock on wood. Do we have wood? Is this table wood? I think it's laminate. Okay, yeah, that's good. That's close enough. Car selling without a catch. Sell your car today on...
0:58Alan Shearer:Carvana! Pick up these may apply. Coming up on today's show. I've got a couple in mind, but what I normally do, I normally go them too early and then I've got nothing for the back end. And he's in 11th place. You need a new strategy. You need a new strategy straight away. Micah's new strategy lasted precisely 12 seconds. Oh, my God. I'm having a stinker. Oh, big.
1:29Gary Lineker:Beaks, come on! He's on a tear-up. No, guys, he's taller than me, you silly sausage. Someone get his height up.
1:37Alan Shearer:This episode is powered by Fuse Energy. Before the action starts, a word from Fuse. Who makes switching energy supplies easy? To celebrate big moves, we're testing Alan and Micah on the legends of the transfer window. Who holds the record for playing for the most clubs in Premier League history? I'm going to go Craig Bellamy. Alan? He just saw the answer there. No, he did not.
2:04Gary Lineker:I've got my finger on it. I've got my finger on it. I know the answer anyway. And it's not Craig Bellamy. Oh, really?
2:11Alan Shearer:Marcus Bent. Eight different teams he played for, which is the most. Crystal Palace, Blackburn, Ipswich, Leicester, Everton, Charlton, Wigan, and one of the club. 2:55Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to the Rest is Football quiz episode with Micah Richards, Alan Shearer and me, Garolinica. How are we? Yeah, all good. Micah. All good. Primed and ready for action. Ready to go. Feeling confident.
3:11Gary Lineker:Hit us with it. What we got?
3:12Alan Shearer:Right, the topic for this week's quiz, Micah and Alan, is the most Portuguese appearances in the Premier League. So the players with the top 10 most appearances in the Premier League that are Portuguese. And the usual rules will apply. We'll do it until we get all 10 and the person with the most wins. And if it's a tie, we'll head down. deep into the 11 to 20. So, confident with this one? There's been a lot of Portuguese players in the Premier League over the years. Gracing our league. Who wants to go first? Alan, you can decide today. I feel as though I always rush in, don't I? So you can go.
4:02I feel like I'm more confident with this one than others, but not super, super confident.
4:09Alan Shearer:There's a few obvious ones. There are a few obvious ones. Yeah, there are. So you're going to go first, Alan, and your first pick? Ooh, got to be Cristiano. Cristiano Ronaldo. I mean, this is a bit surprising, really. No, I tease you, Alan. Yes, of course he's in. Cristiano Ronaldo with 236 appearances, which is quite a lot. And he's in third place. Ooh, good. Nice. How many appearances was that, guys, please? Just something else? 236 I mean I mean we've spoken about Cristiano many times obviously when he played in the Premier League he was very young and then we started to see didn't we the last couple of seasons the monumental numbers that he was starting to produce in terms of scoring goals and I think it's safe to say he's had a reasonable career absolute machine playing against him was torture at times going both ways and He was going through that period, though, where he started believing he was great.
5:14And that is difficult because he's going through the step over, but now I can score. And now I'm that guy in the Premier League. And when a player's got that confidence with no fear, you're in trouble.
5:27Gary Lineker:Amazing. I mean, what can you say about Cristiano that hasn't already been said? Just absolutely outstanding.
5:33Alan Shearer:Yeah, one of the true greats. Right, over to you, Micah. I think it'll be quite easy for the first few and then might get a bit tricky. Big mix. Yes, I will go with Bernardo Silva. Yeah, go. Bernardo Silva, former teammate. Did you cross paths? No, we didn't cross, but yeah, just missed him. You just missed him. Shame, really, but nice to play with. He seems like a lovely guy, doesn't he, as well? When you talk to the City players, you can see there's a real affection for him. He is indeed, actually, Micah, in first place. What a player. First place. What a player. Yeah. Unbelievable. Yeah. He's the only Portuguese player to have made more than 300 appearances in the Premier League.
6:19Alan Shearer:302, to be exact. I think Pep refers to him, doesn't he, as almost as my weakness. He says, I can't leave him out. He loves him that much. I mean...
6:28Gary Lineker:He is a manager's dream, isn't he, I guess? Yeah. He's just relentless in terms of his performance, week in, week out. every single season. He's just been superb. He doesn't get injured at all either, does he?
6:38Alan Shearer:He's like relentlessly always there turning up every single game. I think since Pep came to Man City, he's played the most minutes under Pep. Did we get that start yesterday at the FA Cup final? I think we did, Al. And what is he? He had 20 trophies, a variety of different positions. He's just done absolutely everything. The only thing I'm gutted about is 31. He's not 34, 35. He could do another couple of seasons at City. Definitely. Prats wants a change. I mean, it is relentless, isn't it? Every season playing all those. Yeah. Do we know where he's going yet? I reckon Barcelona, you know. Do you?
7:14Gary Lineker:Is that inside info? No, no, no inside info. No, no inside info. No. Inside a trade-in. We don't do that, Alan. You know that. I just feel as though he was linked with them last summer. and it's not going away. And he's a free. And with all the stuff with Barcelona, Gaz and Alex Alge do on their pod, getting players in and out can be tricky with finances and all that. So to get him on a free could be a good deal.
7:45Alan Shearer:Absolutely. Alan, back to you. We've got numbers one and three. Bruno Fernandes. Bruno is in at number four. Oh, number four. Yeah, good.
8:00Gary Lineker:I was confident with that one.
8:02Alan Shearer:Yeah. I mean, he's won obviously the Football Writers Player of the Year this season. I think you can sometimes judge a player by when you're going through tough times. And Man Utd have obviously been through tough times. But despite that, he's been remarkably consistent. I know sometimes he can get a little bit petulant and dirate and perhaps flaps his arms around at his own players. But I think he's learnt from that, has become a real leader.
8:30Gary Lineker:Where would Man United be without him? He's been a standout for such a long time now for them when they haven't been anywhere near standards that they've set over previous years. But he's been the constant, hasn't he, that he's been superb.
8:42Alan Shearer:Yeah, they wouldn't be in a Champions League place, I guarantee you that without him this season. Would they like him? No, he's been probably the most consistent performer, maybe even in the Premier League. I know it's been a little bit easier because it's only one game a week, but when you look at Man United results or even just the games of it, the highlights, he's always involved in something and he's a heartbeat for that team and now they've got secured Champions League football. He's just been absolutely immense. He's got a real on-field intelligence, hasn't he? I mean, he's teased things really early.
9:16Alan Shearer:Real intelligence on the pitch, I think. Right, over to you, Mike. You're 2-1 down, but it's your pick. Come on, Meeks. I've got a couple in mind, but what I normally do, I normally go with them too early and then I've got nothing for the back end, you know? So I'm trying to be strategic in the way I do things now. Well, it's taken you a while in life.
9:40Alan Shearer:But, you know, we learn as we go, Mike, and we learn as we go. What strategic path are you going down now? That's what I want to know. I'm going to go with another City player, Diaz. Ruben Diaz. Ruben Diaz, yes. Okay. Well, Micah. Sorry, before you go, how many appearances was Fernandes? Sorry. Bruno was 2-2-8. 2-2-8. Thank you. And Ruben Diaz is 1-6-9. And he's in 11th place.
10:07Gary Lineker:Oh! You see? You see what happens when I think about it? This is what he did. She's Micah off the cuff. You need a new strategy.
10:16Alan Shearer:You need a new strategy straight away. Micah's new strategy lasted precisely 12 seconds. Oh, dear. No. Yeah, Ruben Diaz is in 11th place. Oh, my God.
10:31Gary Lineker:He was on my list as well. He was in my head. I might have gone him now. I had two and he was one of them, yeah. He's on his list on his iPhone, Michael.
10:40Alan Shearer:Please.
10:44Yes.
10:45Alan Shearer:No, he's not. No, he's not. Right.
10:48Gary Lineker:Big advantage now to you, Alan. This is the other one that I had in my head and that I'm struggling after this one. Pedro Neto? Pedro Neto. Not bad. I like it. I like it.
10:58Alan Shearer:It's a reasonable shout you would have thought, wouldn't you? And it is because he's in sixth place. Oh, advantage Al. Yes. 3-1 lead. He's been a really good player. I mean, he's really quick, isn't he, on these great counter-attacking. Lightning pace, isn't he? Yeah.
11:15Gary Lineker:Yeah. I like him, actually. I think he's always a threat. I think he gives them a great option, particularly when you're sitting deep with his pace, then you can hit teams on the break. His end product improved, but not at the rate in which I thought it was. Because I think he's an incredible talent, that good. I don't know if it's maybe sometimes the system's in, maybe he needs to be a little bit higher, but he gets through so many times. I just think he's got everything. I just feel like he needs a little bit more composure when he gets in there. But as for a player, it's terrific. Absolutely terrific.
11:46Alan Shearer:Whatever strategy you have, you need to get one now. I think he's struggling. and he's thinking which strategy to use. I'm going to go Carvalho. Carvalho. Carvalho. He's got to be up there. He was there for ages. Riccardo Carvalho at Chelsea. Correct. Yeah, but well, obviously, Michael, he's in the top 20, but he's not in the top 10. He's 135 appearances. 17th. Oh, my God. I mean, that did surprise me as well. I'm having a stinker. I thought that was a brilliant shout-maker. Have you noticed that it's all gone downhill since he started his strategy?
12:28Gary Lineker:Strategy. That strategy is bullshit.
12:33Alan Shearer:Oh, yeah. Oh, disaster. Yeah, Cavalio alongside John Terry, obviously, for quite a while. Right, Alan. I mean, you can get a sort of...
12:44Gary Lineker:I mean, if I get this one right, that's it. It's probably victory.
12:47Alan Shearer:Well, we've got to get all the top 10, so you can't afford to make too many mistakes. So once you get to six, though, you're a winner, obviously. If you get to six.

12:57Gary Lineker:I'm thinking Portuguese.
12:58Alan Shearer:Well, that's probably a good idea. I'm thinking Wolves. That's the category.
13:03Gary Lineker:I'm thinking Wolves, the connection with Wolves, because they just signed loads of Portuguese players, haven't they? So the little midfielder who went to, did he go to Saudi? What was his name again? Oh, yeah, I know who you're talking about. I need the name, though. Was it Neves? Ruben Neves. Ruben Neves, that's it, yeah. He is in the top 20. Oh, Micah. You've done me a kipper there, haven't you? He's in eighth place. Oh!
13:33Alan Shearer:Wow, I was on a... Big meat! Absolutely. Come on! He's on a tail. He's talking about the wrong guy. He said the little one. The little one. He was talking about the team, yeah. Not Neves. No, I wasn't. Neves is taller than me, you silly sausage. Silly sausage.
13:50Gary Lineker:He's not taller than you. Neves is taller than me. No, he's not. Get his height up. Someone get his height up. Can we get his height, please, H? I'm checking height now. 177. Neves, what a player. I mean, if you're looking at shooting technique, he's incredible. Some of the goals that he scored, you don't even think it's possible to score them sort of goals, but the way he shoots and the way he hits it on the outside or the inside set pieces. Yeah, he's definitely one of the most underrated midfielders that have come to the Premier League. I know it's because you mentioned before with all the players coming in from, it was the agent, wasn't it?
14:32Mendes. Yeah. Just bringing them all over. And they sort of got overlooked because, well, bringing them players just for him. But he was a top player. Top, top player.
14:40Alan Shearer:Mendes didn't make the top 10. Although most of his players did. Right, that's 4-1. Let's take a break. And when we come back, Micah needs to stage the fight back of all time. This question is brought to you by Fuse Energy, our presenting partners here at The Rest is Football. Each month, Fuse gives their customers the chance to send us a question for us to tackle on the show. Today's question is from Sophia, who asks, Crystal Palace will be changing managers in the summer with Oliver Glasner seeing out his contract. Glasner could leave with a European trophy. What do we make of their season? Well, if they win a European trophy, it'll be a magnificent season.
15:25Just because he won, obviously, the FA Cup last season as well, and then to carry on and get to another final, it just shows he's a quality manager. I know at times he feels as though he's not been backed, you know, with the players that have left the club, especially Mark Gahey. But what he's managed to do with the squad that he has is nothing short of sensational.
15:44Gary Lineker:Absolutely. Agree. Totally agree. I can understand his frustrations at times, but if he gets them that trophy, then it'd be an unbelievable time as manager at Crystal Palace. Imagine losing Eze and Gay. Take them two players out of any squad. And Alise. Yeah, and Alise. Even before, because we've got Zaha, all the players that they've produced over the years, or not just produced, the recruitment.
16:09Alan Shearer:Do you think as a coach that you have to understand that that's part of working for Crystal Palace? They're never going to be a club that can, given the size of the ground, et cetera, they can't really compete with the Giants. But it just depends what you tell the players. So in terms of the club, the way it's run has been fantastic. But if you just kept a couple of those players together for maybe one more season, but the likes of Eze and Gate, they were always going to go. They were always going to go. There's nothing you can do with that. It's just how they replace them. And I think they've done really well.
16:40There's all the stuff with Mateta and all that sort of stuff. but with all what's gone on behind the scenes, he's done an amazing job.
16:48Gary Lineker:He won't be shy of options. You know what I think a great club would be for him? Dortmund. You know, like Champions League football, but not one of the Bayern Munich giants. So he can still bring young players through. The expectancy level is not that big, but he can still play elite football.

18:58Alan Shearer:Welcome back to the Rest is Football quiz episode with Alan Shearer and Micah Richardson. and me, Garanica. Currently, Micah is trailing. Right, Alan has a 4-1 lead. Micah, you have to get one here in the top 10, otherwise you're going to be struggling big time. Whatever your strategy. You know what I'm with my strategy? I'm just going to go with him. Bo Morty. I know he's high. Oh, what a great shout that is.
19:22Gary Lineker:Lewis Bo Morty. Lewis Bo Morty. Lewis. We're talking Fulham Bo Morty. Left foot. Genius, that one. Was he Southampton as well, was he? It might have been early days, but Fulham is where I remember him.
19:36Alan Shearer:Yeah, he made a lot of appearances, Micah. 296 of them, and he is in second place. Oh, wow. You see my strategy, Guy? Can I talk you through my strategy? Well, no, I get your strategy, but it's not work. I knew he was high. I knew he was high. I knew it. Yeah. But I thought I'd leave him to the... I knew you guys would think of Bomote. And then I...
19:58Gary Lineker:I mean, I like that strategy where you think ones are certain but you're not sure so you put the not sure's in first I mean that's that's why you're 4-2 down you plonker well I thought Diaz and Cavalio would be in
20:11Alan Shearer:yeah I did as well to be honest right over to you Alan Cedric
20:16Gary Lineker:is it Southampton it's a good shout Al it's a good shout
20:19Alan Shearer:I'll tell you what it's a pretty good shout but is it a good enough shout to give Alan an unassailable lead 12th oh I'm good Plot one out there. Plot one out. 167 appearances in the Premier League. So, not quite, Alan. But it's still 4-2. It's still 4-2. And we're over to Micah Richards, who's going to stage possibly the greatest quiz comeback. What is it? 4-2? 4-2. He was all the way down there.
20:53Gary Lineker:What are you looking at? My list style. you're writing that on a brown envelope there yeah there's no cash there's no cash
21:04Alan Shearer:in there is there he's got a bung to lose the quiz I think that's what sound is someone's giving him did you send him a bung Al to make sure you lose he must know what it is I don't know it was just I was signing some of my cards oh right very nice yeah they sent me one of the things so I've just got that underneath right you're buying time here Mike I need an answer from you oh you made me rip my list now Al You see what I mean? Causing carnage. All right. So we've got Bernardo Silva, Bob Alte, Ronaldo, Fernandes, top four, right? Yeah. So what about, rest in peace, Jota, Diogo Jota? Oh, yeah.
21:42Yeah, he's in there.
21:43Alan Shearer:He's in there, Mike. Yeah, he's in fifth place, Diogo Jota. I mean, a lot has been said, hasn't it, about that poor young man over the last year or so. Liverpool clearly missed him as well on the field, but it seems as much off the field, but everyone you speak to speaks so highly of him as not just a footballer, but as a person as well. But he was talented as well.
22:07Gary Lineker:Another one at Wolves, obviously. I mean, you're right about the way everyone has spoken about him. It's been incredible, hasn't it? What a loss for Liverpool. What a loss for football.
22:17Alan Shearer:Incredible. Well, Diogo Jota was in fifth place with 190 appearances and sadly there weren't any more. Right. So that is the correct answer. It's now 4-3. On to you, Alan. João Moutinho. João Moutinho. Very good, Alan. The Wolves' connection again. The Wolves' connection is working for you. He's in ninth place. Yes. With 175. Come on. Alan takes it to five. He's one-off winning this. What number was he? Number 10. Number nine, he said. Number 10. Number nine. He was nine with 175. So all we've got left now is sixth equal. and 10th. So there's only two names. So this is when it obviously gets tricky.
23:01Alan Shearer:Micah, if you can get this one, you've got a lifeline just about. What are you thinking, Big Mix? He's got to be in it, sure. Oh, no, I don't think it was long enough though. Who? Oh, he's trying to get scraps off you, Micah. I think actually you mentioned Matinho earlier as well and I think he clocked it.
23:19Gary Lineker:I thought he said another name, but then that one triggered the name as well, yeah. I'm going to go. Think Wolves, Micah. Think Wolves. What about Lewis Nani?
23:35Alan Shearer:Or Louise? Louise Nani. Not Lewis. Louise. Louise Nani. Manchester United. Correct? Correct. But it is in the top 15. Oh. Oh, God. Nani is 15th. Oh, Oh, Nani! Nani is 15th with 147 Premier League appearances. So, Alan, if you get either of the last two... It's a collapse. It's a collapse. Yeah, it's just... I mean, you've come up with some good names, though, Micah. He's not, you know, all in the top 20. Not good enough. Not good enough. It is tight because between 6th and 15th, there's only kind of 30 games. So it's quite compact. Right, Al, for a glorious victory.
24:28Gary Lineker:I might make a fool of myself here. I think he's Portuguese.
24:34Alan Shearer:I'm thinking Wolves again.
24:38Gary Lineker:Was the keeper, was it Saar?
24:42Alan Shearer:Jose Saar. He's still playing, obviously, isn't he? He's got to be Portuguese, isn't he? He is Portuguese, Al. Yeah, absolutely right. Like, what an amazing performance from Alan Chirer, who's 14th now.
24:59He's telling me there's hope.
25:01Alan Shearer:He's telling me, hey, I've got one. If you get the last two, Mike, and then they come back in a century. I don't think I've got two. I've got one. Only because we worked with him on the Euros. And he must have had a lot of appearances because he played, he did the punditry for Portugal. Jose Font, Southampton. Oh, what a great shout that is. In the Euros, lovely guy. Lovely guy. He sent me a big list, actually, of all the restaurants, great restaurants in Portugal. Lovely chap. He is indeed in the top 10, Micah.
25:39Alan Shearer:He's equal six with Pedro Neto on 178. Oh, that's a great shout, Micah. 178. 5-4. Oh, this is like Bayern PSG.
25:56Alan Shearer:Southampton and Wolves, the Portuguese player. There's something going on there. I've got one name left. Who is going to pluck it out of the sky? Oh, I'm struggling now. It is number 10. Is it a goalkeeper, though?
26:07Gary Lineker:Well, you can't have that. That's a clue. That's my goal. It's your goal, Al, so you'd probably be...
26:11Alan Shearer:Oh. It is not a goalkeeper.
26:14Gary Lineker:Oh, we're at clue time. We need more clues.
26:18Alan Shearer:I've given you a lot of clues and I'm not giving you any more. Oh, I'm struggling. I can't think of any more Portuguese players. You see what I did there? Yeah, very good, guys. I don't know what he says. What do you say? I'm not telling you again. What did he do? You weren't paying attention. It was good.
26:38Gary Lineker:I missed it. Yeah. I'm really struggling. I'm not sure I've got any more names Portuguese. Can we get my buzzer there? The buzzer in. Because if he's got a clue, he's got the advantage because he's going first well
26:49Alan Shearer:maybe he doesn't want a clue oh okay I definitely need a clue yeah a lot of clues or what I'll tell you what I'll give you one clue right say that again I said I'll give you one clue right I've given you a lot of clues but I'm not giving you any more I'll give you one he's a fullback I've got it you give it
27:10Gary Lineker:I heard it I heard it Diego Dallow yes come on
27:16Alan Shearer:a lot of clues I heard it a lot of clues I heard it that was the second time I did that you needed a victory Micah's left the room Micah's left the room boom a lot of clues you deserved it Al you were sharper you was listening you were sharper Diego Dallot or Dallot a lot of clues yeah he was I mean he's what do we think of him? I mean, he's had a kind of steady career, I would say, at Manchester United.
27:50Gary Lineker:I think he gives you a variety of positions across the back, I guess. He's reliable, isn't he?
27:56Alan Shearer:I think he's another one who's benefited the coaching of Michael Carrick. Carrick, yeah. Before we go, one question on Portugal. Contenders World Cup?
28:05Gary Lineker:Oh, yeah, I think without doubt. I mean, the quality of players that they have, yeah.
28:09Alan Shearer:Just reading that list, the quality of players, yeah, amazing.
28:11Gary Lineker:I just think that with the situation with Cristiano, if Cristiano is happy enough to come off or not start or whatever, and they're able to handle that, then I think yes. But I think a lot depends on that. It depends on how they want to play. I feel the last time I watched Portugal play, a lot of square pegs in round holes because of the names. And you're going to have to sacrifice. And that's not just Ronaldo. if you've got Jao Neves and Vettinho in midfield they have to start they see what they can do for PSG but then you've got the conundrum of Fernandes where do you have Fernandes Fernandes needs time to roam but he's not disciplined in what he wants to do but if you've got those three midfielders you put them up against any midfield in world football wouldn't you so it's just about the balance of the team individual quality certainly yes but balance I'm not sure yet
29:10Alan Shearer:I think they're definitely one of the I mean say outsiders but because they've never won the World Cup but it's Portugal but I think they have to have a slight chance if they can get everything together and gel it'll be interesting to see how they go okay well done well done Alan fine victory fine victory and we'll call it a day there commiserations big mix goodbye from me
29:33Gary Lineker:goodbye from me goodbye from me
