1:08Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to The Rest is Football with Micah Richards, Alan Shearer and me, Gary Lineker. We're going to have one of those episodes today where we're going to have a little quiz. and the boys are under pressure again. But before that, I need to know about how Unite was at a wasted. Oh, brilliant, man. Brilliant. What are the chances that we go separately, but we're in a box next to each other? I got there. I got there, guys. I know. I saw the pictures. I was arriving a little bit late because we were doing our thing yesterday, weren't we? I was thinking, that can't be Alan next door. I looked to my left I see Boogie the way I forgot Alan

1:54I looked to my right and I seen this dick coming towards me with a hat on I was like that can't be Mike and it was and you know what was funny I was going there so there was a box there so Alan was like on the other side so our box is here and there's like Alan's in a box to the left of me but to the far end so I walked over to go and this woman stops me and says, you can't go over there. You're not allowed. You've not got permission. I went, fuck off. I'm fucking Michael Richards. Do you know who I am? We need to keep the riffraff out, Michael. And then, because I had my hat on and then as soon as I put my hat up, I'm going to see Alan.

2:36I didn't say I'm really Michael Richards. That was just for comedy effect. I said, no, I know Alan. She said, no, no, no. and I put my, I had one of them, what are them hats called? Bucket hats.

2:49Alan Shearer:Bucket hats. So you couldn't see my full, my full face. Yeah, my full face. So then she pulled up and she said, oh, I'm so sorry. Yeah, he's just over there. But yeah, then I went to go see him and he was with Frank Lampard, wasn't he, old teammates? Was he? Frankie Lampard was in there. Yeah, Frank was in there. Tell you what, we had a box show, which was amazing because we could have, we had the football, the Newcastle game of one screen earlier and the Ryder Cup on the other screen, that was just starting, and then the Ryder Cup was on all night, so we could keep an eye on it, it was great.

3:23Alan Shearer:We'll come to the Ryder Cup in just a second, but first, Oasis, how were they? Oh, amazing. Brilliant. There can't be many bands that play for, I don't know, two hours, and every song's a banger. And what's your favourite song? Because there's so many, but you know the one that got me yesterday? little by little yeah it was great and that came on it did something to me and I'm not a huge band fan I'm R &B hip hop type of guy but going there for the first time as a band obviously Oasis the City Connection and all that sort of thing it was just sensational it's brilliant nice little touch tribute to Ricky Hatton as well wasn't it they did yeah did Manchester City get a mention I bet it did at some point no not when I was I got there just a little bit later than quarter past date but yeah I don't remember Man City getting a mention I don't think so no but apart when he said he goes is anyone from in the crowd from Jamaica and it was not one person

4:30but he goes anyway this is to you it was brilliant it was brilliant

4:36Alan Shearer:brilliant they do it well I mean I stayed in and watched the Ryde Cup just say we're recording this on Monday morning. Oh my God, that was the most gruesome yet gripping watch imaginable because obviously when we did the pod on Sunday, it looked like Europe were going to... And, you know, all I could think of was the clip where I was telling you, oh, I hope this doesn't come back to bite me. I was thinking that myself. I mean, although, you know, not on a personal note, but God, it got so tense. But at the end, Shane Lowry's moment, and he's dancing around the green. I was so happy for him because he's such a top guy, isn't he?

5:15Alan Shearer:He can tell everyone loves him. I mean, the Ryder Cup, what it gives, it was just gripping TV, wasn't it? The whole weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it was just amazing television sport at its best. I mean, the rivalry and the nastiness and the incredible golf and just everything over those three days was just... I think as well, I was thinking about it yesterday because I'm doing this, you know, this reality kind of game show that is a great, I think it's a great format. But if you think about sports format, there's nothing like the Ryder Cup. You know, golf is an individual sport. We know what it is.

5:56Alan Shearer:It's loads of players playing against each other on a course. But this in terms of a sporting format for a team game, there's nothing like it because you've got a mixture of the individual games, the pairings and then that centre on the last day so you've got three different formats in the tournament you've got four balls you've got foursomes and then you've got singles so you're giving me a funny look here Michael like you don't know what I'm talking about he's thinking what are four balls what are foursomes for those who are up to speed with golf terminology can you just say the four he said three or foursomes and four balls foursomes I know what you're thinking now Oh, yeah.

6:39I just had to ask. I can't save that life with a straight face and expect us to...

6:45Alan Shearer:Four sons in golf is when you've got four players. You've got two teams of two and they take alternate shots, Micah. Okay. So someone will tee off on the odd holes, someone will tee off on the even holes and then they take alternate shots from there in. Four balls are when you've got four players... four balls you've got four balls between you you two four balls is when all four there's two against two and they each play their own ball got it yeah I think so alternate alternate is foursomes and they've only got two balls they've got a ball per team and they tell alternate shots all balls is when all four players hit a ball each and the best score from each team counts so you know you're up against teams though okay with you with you if four players play one hole and one of them has a birdie that team wins that hole if the other team didn't get a ball I was sat watching the Ryder Cup with you on Saturday Michael when we were doing match of the day and you looked as if you were gripped in it and loved it you didn't have a fucking clue what was going on but the teams at the end were amazing weren't they were so I mean I think probably the main emotion was bloody relief Every single player said that was the worst two hours.

8:07Alan Shearer:It was the worst three hours of my life. And Luke Donald, you could see, had been through the ringer. I mean, you've got to get... Sure, just a bit. I mean, you know, we all get a bit kind of competitive in these things, particularly when you're watching the Ryder Cup with the Americans. But boy, oh boy, did they turn up yesterday. I never, ever expected it to be that close. Never thought. And it got off to a good start. It was like the first three or four. It was blue there. Oh, yeah. I was thinking, oh, my God, this is like... You've got to run away with this, but... Well done. I mean, a couple of, I thought, European players looked a bit shot after all they've been through.

8:41Alan Shearer:Rory looked a bit tired. But, yeah, it was fabulous. Well done, Ludwig Oberg, by the way. The only player that won. Only one player, yeah. Even James deserves the main shout out. And Cyril Hatton hole in the pot to actually win. Here's another one for you, Micah. Shane Lowry hold the pot to make sure that Team Europe couldn't lose. because if you are the holders if it's a tie you keep it so that would have been 14-14 so that's why it went mad then but actually the winning pot was held by Turalhans so well done all Europe, you're absolutely brilliant loved it just a quick quiz question before we go on can you explain what a foursome is in golf or foursomes are so the foursome is you all each have a ball and who gets the best...

9:33Other way round. Other way round. Fucks.

9:35Alan Shearer:That's four. I knew he wasn't listening. Pay attention. Right, you're starting minus one on this quiz. The quiz today, right, this is quite an interesting one, actually. I think as Harry came up with this one. Players that have made the most appearances for Jose Mourinho. not just in the Premier League it can be any of the clubs where he's coached anywhere anywhere so I mean have a little thing where did he coach the longest what players did he have here there and everywhere give it some thought we'll do what we usually do I want the top 10 and we'll see how long that takes you to get just another observation from myself go on have you noticed something about Micah today He's taking his glasses off.

10:32Correct. He got found out on the last quiz. Everyone can see the reflections in your glasses. I knew you bald bastard would say something. So I brought my fucking glasses off. He's got them. Hey!

10:51Alan Shearer:Right. Who wants to go first? I think you should go first, Alan. I agree. First person to five. Got to be John Terry. Wow. For me. Straight in. Alan, I'm going to write this down because I've not got my usual kit here because I'm obviously on location. So, Alan, you've gone John Terry and that is correct. He's not top, though. He's not top. He's second. And he's had 267 appearances. I mean, what a player as well, John Terry. I mean, as defenders go, I think he's right. Do you think he's, I mean, this thing's a bit silly to say this, slightly underrated? No. Not in the game, but I just, no, I don't know.

11:37I think it's weird. There's a very good question. I think if John Terry was doing punditry now, he would get a lot more accolades than what he's, because he was technically amazing, read the game well, was strong as a knocks, scored important goals at the correct times. He was, the only thing he didn't have was pace, but he never got run because he was so intelligent. You know? He was top, but because he's not...

12:09Alan Shearer:He'd have in your fantasy team, wouldn't he? Oh, 100%. Without doubt. Without doubt. But, I think if he was doing punditry now, like, his career would be celebrated more. But sometimes, players can sometimes we've forgotten about, even though we don't, you know, we don't forget about John. Okay. No, we don't. So, he's actually in second place, but that is the correct answer. That counts because I want, obviously, answers in the top ten. Micah, over to you. Well, if he's gone John Terry, I'm going to go Frank Lampard. We've seen him last night boogieing. Coventry are flying, so I'm sure he's in there.

12:50He's got to be in there.

12:51Alan Shearer:Okay. that is correct Frank Lampard what position do you think he's in he's got to be top five top five is he correct third third that's not bad he's at third yeah to 215 appearances for Frank Lampard I mean one of the great great midfielders goal scoring midfielder as well we've all worked with him as well in TV great lad yeah lovely guy oh fella was he in good form last night Al Yeah, he was. Great lad. Great player. I mean, incredible goal-scoring record for a midfielder. Unbelievable, yeah. Great athlete as well. Get up and down. Okay, so you both... I thought you... I knew this guy went, right, they're going to go John Terry, then they're going to go Frank Lampard.

13:38Alan Shearer:Easy, easy. Get us through, eh? Yeah, there's one or two names in there that might be slightly trickier, we'll see. Right, Alan, over to you. oh my god we had an injury though didn't we I was going to go Peter Check but he got an injury as well well his head was he I'll still go Peter Check but remember not necessarily to think out loud because you might say something that you help the opponent yeah that's why I'm going to stick with him stick with Peter Check this is now my experience of doing reality TV games get a little plug for yourself I'll keep plugging it but it won't be out to a spring so I'll plug it more next, towards the last stage of the season.

14:25Alan Shearer:Petr Cech, Al. Petr Cech is sixth. Yes! Come on! I mean, Petr Cech is, he's got to be one of the, what do you think, top three goalkeepers in Premier League history? Yeah, when you're mentioning great goalkeepers in Premier League, you'd have to mention Petr Cech, definitely. You'd have to be in there. I mean, not just with Chelsea, but also Arsenal. You forget that, don't you? Yeah, he was top. He was a little bit strange the way he kicked the ball, wasn't he? Sometimes looked a bit off balance, but he was a top goalkeeper. 196 appearances. He did have that awful head injury, didn't he? Yeah, did he?

15:10Alan Shearer:He could talk, better check. I did read occasional bits of punditry. Oh, yeah? And he was actually the BBC a bit a couple of times. And you'd ask him a question. And let's say if you were on a channel where they had commercials, you'd be in trouble.

15:31Alan Shearer:Yeah, I remember. So we were getting towards the end of the show, and I was thinking, I'd worked out these answers. Let's just say they were long. Interesting, but long. And then towards the end of the show, I had like, you know, I get the count in my Aves countdown. I can't remember who was on with him, but the countdown's got to about a minute. And I thought, I ain't going to Petrchek now. I know someone else can just say goodbye to him at the end. Otherwise, I'm going to interrupt him to say, we need to go, Petr. Sorry, sorry. And I hate doing it. I used to hate doing that because you just feel so rude.

16:10Alan Shearer:You have to do it because you do need to hit a count at the end of the show, as you know. but lovely fella really lovely fella yeah okay big Meeks over to you we're 100 % so far what have we got now what have we got we've got we've got second third and sixth I'm struggling already no

16:30Matic has got to be in there I've got Matic Matic

16:34Alan Shearer:do do do do do do fifth lovely yeah okay what's different about him I just remember him playing against against City all the time playing for Chelsea, but where, did you have him somewhere else as well? Don't, don't tell me, don't tell me because you've always, also got all the notes there, haven't you guys? You must have some notes. no, I've done my research, obviously. Where else would he have him? Would it have been Roma? Roma. Yes! Two of them appearances all together, so obviously Chelsea and Man United as well. So the three, three clubs he played at. Oh, I forgot about United, of course United as well.

17:11I was trying to get outside the box. Yes.

17:14Alan Shearer:Cool. It's getting tough now. We've got four. After the next one, we'll take a little break. That'll be halfway. My maths will be... Right, OK. Alan? I'm going to go for Carvalho. Well, Alan, why'd you go Ricardo Carvalho? Because he's Googling, that's why. Not Googling, Micah. I don't do what you do. That's why you've taken your glasses off. See, I've noticed that. normally people put their glasses on to have a look at something you take them off because everyone can see in them you've been outed what position do you think I'll tell you now he's in the top 20 what position do you think he's in I think he's high I think he'd be high because he always talked about Cavalio in interviews like he will I can't remember the interview but he said something like John Terry is his main man or something, but Cavalio's the one he can trust, so he'll be high, definitely.

18:12That was what I was coming with next, apart from that. He is first.

18:18Alan Shearer:Oh, come on. That's a great shout-out. 293 appearances, and the reason for that, of course, it was not just Chelsea. Where else?

18:32Cavalio, Cavalio. Madrid, no? Madrid, yeah. Yeah, Madrid. Real Madrid. And where else? Oh, did he have him, when he was in Portugal? Porto. Porto, correct.

18:45Alan Shearer:Porto, yes. Because he brought him in from Porto, didn't he, to Chelsea, if you remember. Correct. Trusted him, trusted him. So there you go. He was first. He was a good player, by the way. Oh, God, he was, yeah, yeah. Wasn't he? Because he was not your kind of archetypal centre-half, was he? No, he wasn't big. He was small, but quick. He wasn't big, yeah. Smart. I love the game really well. You know, if Jose plays you that amount of time, that he can trust you as a defender. Yeah, absolutely. So, okay, we're halfway in terms of your choices and your five for five, which is pretty tasty, lads.

19:21Alan Shearer:Let's take a break. Probably get a little bit tougher when you come back. Hello and welcome to Doing It Anyway, a brand new series from Goalhanger. I'm Katty Kay. I've spent years studying the science and art of confidence, writing books about how we can close the confidence gap between men and women, and talking to experts and younger women about how to pass it on. Confidence means taking risks, acknowledging your fears, and, well, doing it anyway. In this series, I'll be talking to psychologists, entrepreneurs, and business leaders to unpack how you can rethink challenges and grow your own confidence.

19:57We'll talk about how to spot the difference between confidence and competence, how to deal with office politics and stolen credit and, yes, handling rejection, and ultimately how you can become a better leader, teammate, and, yes, a better person. Doing it anyway with Catty K every Friday, wherever you get your podcasts.

20:25Alan Shearer:Welcome back to the Rest is Football quiz episode. Micah and Alan so far going very well. Alan's had three picks. He's got three correct answers. And they have to be in the top ten. Micah's had two picks. He's got two. So it's 3-2 to Alan. But it's Micah's turn. Micah, you're looking down. Yeah, what are you looking down at, Micah?

20:51if you really want to know it's me snuff all the snozzies are available we can't be promoting tobacco that makes me feel sick

Read the full transcript

21:05Alan Shearer:that brings back the worst memories okay Micah Michael let's go let's go to Jogzilla he's got to be the top 10 8th yeah you can't do that to me guys I thought all of them out of the top 10 now this is my new game show face you have to just entice a little bit of excitement out of it and all that so I'm learning I'm learning on the go here how many was Drogba Drogba was 187 he's in 8th place 187 appearances so very good now then now then I'm thinking Man United and I'm thinking Chelsea so I'm gonna go with Matic we've done Matic I must have fell asleep about 30 seconds ago I also reminded you of the sticks that were going to do and the Manumatic was in there I had a few drinks last night didn't I at the concert

22:17Alan Shearer:you're stressing me out well I'll give you an 8th sorry 9th place was Noel Gallagher and Liam Gallagher oh god hurry up pal I've got a trade to catch look you know it's tough Di Maria Di Maria 14th oh bollocks 14.137 appearances for Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho. Look at him. Look at his stupid laugh. He hasn't won yet because it's the first to five, don't forget. The first to five. I'm going to go with Jabby Alonso. Wow. Jabby Alonso is 11th. Yes! Yes! You hit the post with our niches. He hit the post. Let me cross these out in case there's any repetitions. Hang on. I knew he'd get a bit more interested in the second half.

23:23Alan Shearer:Right, back to you, Alan. 3-3 is the score. Ferreira, Paolo Ferreira. Paolo Ferreira. Good shot. Fourth. Fourth. Fourth. Yeah. Come on! Right, of course. Boom! Yeah, it wasn't just Chelsea. Porto as well, of course, which would have added to it. And he made 212 appearances. Did he really? Wow, brilliant. Poor Mourinho. I'm just thinking about me seeing Matic again when you'd said it like two minutes earlier. I worry about it. As footballers, as we get older, we'll know. I think that's all right. Don't worry. You're okay. You can remember where you were last night, can't you? I shouldn't laugh at these things, but it's the only way to cope.

24:17Alan Shearer:Right, come on, Micah. I need an answer. I'm going to go... Since you did Matich with the Roma, I'm going to do Smalling. What about Smalling? Chris Smalling. Chris Smalling. What a shout out. United. Man United and Roma. Roma as well, yeah. Seven. Seven? Yeah. You dickhead. With 188 appearances. 188? All right, pressure's on now. Because you're 4-4. I've got two more names in the top 10 for you to get.

24:52Just going to say, I'm really struggling now. You get this.

24:55Alan Shearer:If you get this, you can't be beaten in normal time. If Micah equalises, we'll have a penalty shootout and you'll have to get the highest ranking below that. Okay, so you go up. I'm struggling for names now, so I'm just going to say Pepe. Pepe is indeed in the top 20. Fuck! But he's not in the top 10. He's tied 18th. Pepe of Real Madrid, of course, so... Yeah. Right, Micah. Ronaldo. Cristiano Ronaldo. Cristiano. Madrid, eh? Yes, he is ninth. Is he eighth? That was just a guess. There was no thought process behind that. I'm sorry. Yeah. Where's he gone? Right, he's gone to his computer now. He's celebrating like Shane Lowry.

25:46Alan Shearer:Where's he gone? Where's he gone? Where's he gone Googling? Oh, he's got his hat on, look.

25:54Alan Shearer:What's that say on there? Ronaldo? Not girls, chicken baby. Hang on, they're not playing the pod. Hey, they will do. They better do after this. Right, okay. Right, five, four. obviously we've got to get the first 10 so if you get this Alan it will be a tie and then we'll have a shootout if Micah then gets it then he wins 6-4, we're going to do it like that until we complete the top 10 there's one name remaining in the top, you've done really well between you there's one left he's also in 10th place in the list Michael Essien 13th Micah for the win I haven't got a clue I haven't got a clue at all

26:46Alan Shearer:Makalele Makalele is not in the top 10 Is he not? No Wow Back to you Alan Di Maria Have we said him have we? You've said him as well I'm running out of names now I'm running out of names Have we said Casillas? We've not said Casillas I will say Kassius then Kassius is in the top 20 but Alastair not 10 he's 16 Aika Kassius is 16 SEM have we said SEM we've said SEM yeah I just said him a minute ago you're getting as bad as I am oh my god I'm struggling I'm struggling guys he made 157 appearances Benzema Benzema Benzema Oh, unlucky 12th. No! Micah? Oh, my God. I don't know. I'm run out of names. You'll kick yourselves a little bit.

27:47Alan Shearer:I'll tell you now, he did not play for Chelsea. He didn't play for Chelsea. I'm just going to give it now, the first one that shouts out, no order. All right. Where are you going, Micah? Where are you going down there, by the way? Where have you gone? Where are you going, you duffing out? We can't see your eyes. You keep your head up. You keep your head up, Big Miss. You keep your head up. Have we said Ramos, haven't we? We haven't. Ramos. 14th. 137. Oh, my God. We've said absolutely everyone. Well, maybe you haven't. No, I'm struggling, seriously. I thought I'd said everyone. I've got a few of them.

28:28Alan Shearer:I've still got about, in the top 20, I've still got one, two. Patricio he's in the top 20 but he's 18th Rui Patricio come on Al have we said have we said Kadira yeah I said him you said him have we I said Kadira not so long ago he's not in it anyway I said Ozil I said Ozil it wasn't Ozil it wasn't Casillas it wasn't Cech you've done us you've stumped us well let's say in the last 30 seconds someone mentioned his name. We said Ozil, haven't we, Mesut Ozil? Yes, Al. You don't. You absolutely don't. What a comeback. You didn't say it. I said it two minutes ago. You just said, you just said, we've done Mesut Ozil, haven't we?

29:27Alan Shearer:I think we've done, you said you hadn't said it, his name was never mentioned, Michael, until you did it just before. I need VAR on that, guys. John H, I need VAR, mate. It wasn't mentioned. Unlucky Mike, unlucky Mike. Right, 5-5. Quick playoff before we go. If any of you get the other name in the top 20, wins it. And you've mentioned quite a few of them now. In fact... What are you doing, Michael? Do you really want to see me? I'm waiting for taxis waiting for me outside, mate.
