2:17Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to the Rest is Football La Liga episode with Alex Algiermi-Kiara Lineker. I'm back in my little spotted wallpapered room Lovely wallpaper Last week of filming, Gary? Yes, we're nearly there now So four or five days Four more days to go But it's been a lot of fun Really enjoyed it I think people will love this Looking forward to it A bit of light relief on a Saturday night it'll be And I think we need a bit of that at the moment As for you, I saw your quite spectacular performance Translate your own questions, translating Esther Vow. Esther, wow. Esther, wow, yeah. 18 years old.

3:02Brilliant, brilliant player and a big win for Chelsea.

3:06Alan Shearer:Yeah, but we're here not to discuss that. We're here to discuss La Liga, of course. Did you get back from Istanbul all right? Yeah, got back from Istanbul fine. Went to the Soho house, thanks for the recommendation. It was great. Liverpool were not great, but we obviously are not here to talk about Liverpool either. Although they do have Real Madrid. They have that Real Madrid game coming up soon, so I hope they can get back on track before that, because there's now three defeats in a row. So where should we start? Let's start at Barcelona then, shall we? Speaking of a shock defeat, losing 4-1 away at Sevilla, it's now back-to-back defeats under Hansi Flick.

3:42Sevilla hadn't beaten Barcelona in 19 games, but they did and they deserved to win as well. Here's how the game unfolded. Barcelona were beaten for the first time this season by the European champions Paris Saint-Germain in midweek tonight they have the opportunity to return to the top of La Liga by beating Sevilla Vargas slings it in Romero tussling with Rajo he goes down Rajo does have his arms all over Isaac Romero there he's changed his mind and Sevilla have a penalty

4:22it is Alexis Sanchez who scores

4:30Sadia breaking again this is Vargas and Romero Pedri oh Marcus Rashford that is a brilliantly controlled goal and deep deep into first half stoppage time Barcelona are back in it Marcus Rashford has another Barcelona goal Here is Alejandro Balde gets it back from Rashford and gets the wrong side of his former United teammate Adnan Yanezai penalty Robert Lewandowski

5:17The draw Barcelona level. Oh, he's put it wide. Would you believe it? Still energy in the legs of Jose Angel Carmona. Adams for company. Doesn't need it. Jose Angel Carmona goes himself. And Barcelona are heading for their second defeat in a week.

5:44maybe still time for one more for Sevilla here it's Adams well this time he does get his goal and Sevilla have fought and Barcelona are beaten in La Liga for the first time this season

6:03Alan Shearer:well I didn't really see that coming although I think Sevilla have improved a bit this season that we have to discuss the high line. It's such high risk and they will say high reward and looking back at last season, it was a very good season. By and large, it did work. At some point, teams I always thought would learn how to play against it. We saw that happen when he was manager of the German national team. Played a similar manner, but I suppose it's difficult to implement it more with a national team because you don't get the time to spend with the players. but they were all at sea last night.

6:43Alan Shearer:We're doing this on Monday morning. They had one or two other chances as well. So if teams work them out, they're going to have to work on it a little bit because you've not got pressure on the ball and you still don't drop as someone's a bat. I mean, it's so high risk. So high risk. And we're probably at the point now that teams are working it out. Sevilla could have been 4-0 up in the first half. Barcelona obviously missing some key players. There's no Laminia Mou, Howe injured again, no Rafinha, no Firmin Lopez, no Gavi, but still should have done a lot better. Really poor performance from Barcelona.

7:20Up there with the worst, maybe under Hansi Flick that I've seen. It was reminiscent of match day eight last season. They lost 4-2 to off Sassouna. There was no Laminia Mou in that game. There was no Rafinha in that game. but really disappointed for them and a really disappointing week as well because they were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain midweek in the Champions League and losing that as well well let's talk about Marcus Rashford we like talking about him but I think he deserves a mention because I say they were poor but he was good I thought he had a good performance and it was an absolutely brilliant goal control volley finish and a superb ball from Pedri as well so I think he looks full of confidence doesn't he Gary?

8:00Alan Shearer:Yeah I'm bad pleased for Marcus I don't think he could have had a much better start. I mean, admittedly, they lost this particular game, but through no fault of his. In fact, I thought he was probably their best player. You're right. There are obviously some big players missing. If Lewandowski scores the penalty that he missed, he hit it wide. It's funny. I was at home and thinking, oh, let Marcus take it. He's a brilliant penalty taker. And, you know, obviously Lewandowski's taken them. And I always knew he would take it, but I had a feeling. And then he hit it wide. Yeah, missed three of his last ten now, Lewandowski, from the spot.

8:36Alan Shearer:I know, so Marcus will be jumping at the bits, I suspect, to get that gig. But I don't think he'll get it while Lewandowski's there, because strikers, however many of them miss, unless they miss two, possibly two on the bounds, they tend to keep taking them. But yeah, great ball from Pedri, brilliant finish from Marcus. I thought he did one or two other good things as well. He was down, injured at the end of the game. Any word on that, Alex? I think minor. I don't think we have to worry about that. There were reports this morning saying that he should be fine, which is good for Barcelona, because they can't really afford to lose any more players.

9:10Alan Shearer:It's not too long either till the Clasico, because they don't say they can't afford. And hopefully Luminium are there in two or three weeks for him, which is pretty much when the, what's the end of the month, isn't it? Towards the end of the month. Because he'd been called up to Spain, hadn't he? He'd been called up to the Spain squad. I'm sure Hansi Flitt was delighted, that news. But then he obviously won't be going to play for Spain and have a week or two to recover. And hopefully he'll be back fit. Because we want to see Laminia Mal playing in the Glasgow, don't we? We all want to see him.

9:38Well, we want to see that.

9:40Alan Shearer:But we also want to see him playing in the World Cup. And they've got to be careful with him. And I think it's really good that he'll get a little break now. No international football for him for a while. Spain are going to be fine. They're going to qualify anyway. and I think Thomas Tuchel as well has done it with Jude Bellingham I think you know he's just come back from injuries he's kind of feeling his way back into first team football and I think it's wise to leave him out because the greater good will be next summer for Spain as well and obviously Barcelona want to get him fit but clearly they're not quite the same without him and that risk and reward thing if you've not got two of your best strikers, best forwards, shall we say, in Rafinha and Laminya Mal, then it's going to be more risk than reward because we saw that.

10:35Alan Shearer:It's all very well if you fancy your chances of outscoring a team, but if you've not got your stars up front, that makes that slightly more difficult. I understand why he does it because it's worked for him and it worked for them brilliantly last season. And the other thing I would add though is we saw it again, didn't we, against PSG in a similar way to the Inter semi-final of the Champions League last season. You're playing really, really, really good teams. Yes, if you've got a result that's OK, you don't have to go completely gung-ho in the last few minutes. It cost them against Inter and it cost them last week against PSG.

11:13Alan Shearer:I'm sure they'll rally, recover and qualify, hopefully. But the thing is, it's much better if you're in the top eight because then you've got too few fixtures. Yeah, absolutely. But credit to Sevilla, by the way, just to speak about them a little bit more, because they really did deserve that win. There were incredible scenes on the final whistle of the players celebrating with their fans. It was 33 degrees, by the way. I was thinking, why are they coming off for water? And it was 33 degrees in October. What have we got? Storm Amy? Great. Why do we live in England? Alexis Sanchez scored his penalty against his former club.

11:49He said, if I score two, I'll celebrate the second goal. Not the first. He celebrated. But we don't blame him. We don't blame him. And then obviously three goals scored in the second half as well. But thoroughly deserved the win. Massive, massive win for Sevilla, who hadn't won at home this season. So beating Barcelona was...

12:11Alan Shearer:It's about eight years since they've beaten Barcelona, isn't it? something ridiculous. It was Barcelona's worst defeat against Sevilla since 1951. I think I played in that game.

12:25I didn't.

12:27Alan Shearer:I once scored that. Yeah. I quite like playing there in Sevilla, especially in the winter. It's so lovely and warm, as you quite rightly said. Let's move on to Real Madrid. Good victory for them after a recent defeat. Let's have a look at how they did it. So how do Real Madrid respond to their derby day hammering last weekend? Humbled by Atletico Madrid. Vinicius Junior cuts in, gets his shot away and scores via a big chunky deflection. Well, I think Comisada is the unfortunate man. and Vinicius Junior the benefactor as Real Madrid take the lead Vinicius Junior sets off again here Oh Marin, clumsy, penalty Just touched it away from him and a big chunk of contact Vinicius Junior won the penalty Oh Vinicius Junior scores the penalty but not by much.

13:41Tenas will feel he maybe should have saved that. Instead, Rayla two up.

13:50That's Mikatante. That's brilliant. The half-time substitute has cut the gap and done so in stylish fashion. Vinicius Junior away from Marino who's already been booked. and is about to be booked again and Villarreal are going to finish with 10 here not long after they got themselves back into this game a big setback in any hopes of nicking a point

14:22Gay just dithering for a moment caught in possession Mbappe Kylian Mbappe scores again well a hat-trick in midweek and a customary goal teed up by Brian Diaz here. Obviously, such a disappointing result for Real Madrid last weekend, losing in the Madrid derby, but then a big win for them in Kazakhstan, obviously filled them with confidence going into this weekend's game against Villarreal, who've had a decent start to the season, but a convincing performance from Real Madrid. Vinicius Junior, absolutely outstanding.

14:59Alan Shearer:Well, Vinicius' first goal, I'm not sure he'd have got that given to him in the Premier League. We've got this weird, weird thing where we try and give people own goals when there's a slight reflection. I think it's probably fantasy football stuff, really. Yeah, yeah. The reason they have explicit reasons for scoring or not scoring. But having said that, he was a menace throughout the game. And it's good. But it looks like he's got his mojo back, Alex. Yeah, I thought it was interesting as well, obviously. So the first goal, he beat Santi Mourinho, who then gave away the penalty for the second.

15:38And Mbappe actually came and gave Vinicius Junior the ball. You'd be thinking in the form that Kylian Mbappe is in, he'd want to take it. But obviously, Vinicius Junior had won the penalty. And then the keeper was giving him a bit of chat. I don't know if you saw that, but Kylian Mbappe stepped in in and sort of pushed him away, pushed Tenas away. And he scored it. But I thought it was great that Mbappe could have taken it, couldn't he? 14 goals of him so far this season. He went on and scored in the second half, didn't he? But still, no, really good to see Vinicius Junior firing again. Because at the start of the season, it sort of looked like it could go either way.

16:17He wasn't happy. There was all this chat in the media. He's angry. He's being subbed. But he's reacted in the best way possible, really.

16:25Alan Shearer:Having said that, given his spat with the goalkeeper, the keeper probably saved that. Just sneaked under him, didn't it? I thought, maybe he should have saved it. But it doesn't matter. If it goes in, it goes in. It's always funny. It's a good penalty if they go in and it's a bad penalty if they don't. Even if sometimes you strike the one better, they saved and scored. But Mbappe continued his goal-scoring streak, as you said. I mean, he looks so sharp and so happy at the moment. so happy but he did limp off as well yes Troze you're right but I think so I think they they said it's an ankle sprain but he should should shake it off because they don't want to lose Kylian Mbappe right now in the form he's in absolutely absolutely outstanding interesting you mentioned Jude Berling earlier and the fact that he hasn't been called up to England the only game he's started so far this season I know I know he's out it has been out injured but as the Madrid derby.

17:20Came off the bench. Came close to scoring. A good link-up play with Fede Valverde. But it's a tricky one. I'm intrigued to see what's going to happen after the international break, whether he's going to come straight back into the team or whether Xabi Alonso is going to make him fight for his place just as all the others have to do.

17:39Alan Shearer:He's loved there, though. He's loved there. And I think he'd be a brave man to leave Jude out. I suspect he's protecting him a little bit. He's been out for quite a while after an operation. I think that the interesting thing will be where he plays in because at present, Arda Goulet has been playing in that role behind. Interesting though about the England situation as well because Tuchel actually came out and said he is fit. He does want to play. He has spoken to me. He wants to be called up, but I'm not going to call him up. So hopefully there's nothing more to it because England needs Jude Bellingham.

18:13Alan Shearer:Well, I wonder if he's left a few big names out. And I wonder if Thomas has been a little bit clever here in the sense that he's thinking about next summer. He's not thinking about next week. England are going to qualify. Same as I said about the minima. Spain are going to qualify. They don't need these players now. Give them a couple of weeks off. Bellingham's been out a bit now and he wants to play football. But nursing men, he's so important to Real Madrid. I think he is. And he's so important to England as well that Jude, I think sometimes you need protecting from yourself. And I think it's the same with Laminia Malle.

18:51Alan Shearer:These are young men, very young men. And that eagerness to play, I know, I've been there myself. You desperately want to play every game, but sometimes it's good to give the body and the mind a little bit of a rest. I know Jude's had a lot of time to rest, but even more so when you're coming back from injuries. I saw Pep talking about Rodri, for example, another obviously brilliant Spanish international. He got injured in the game yesterday on Sunday. Looks like a hamstring. And Pep said after, he said, you kept asking me, why was I not starting? Why was I only giving him an hour? Well, now you know.

19:29Alan Shearer:When you come back from injuries, the danger of picking up something else is greater than when you're probably normally playing. so yeah well look at Lamin Yamao he comes back and he's straight back out again you know he clearly wasn't ready ready to come back but if a player's not asking why they're not playing then you know that's not right either so it's only natural that I'm sure Jude's knocking on Xabi's door every day I'm ready I'm ready stop me but but yeah all in good time all in good time yeah there'll be a lot of football matches to be played this season shall we take a break and then discuss a couple of the other games and a little round up when we come back This episode is brought to you by Duluth Trading Company.

21:38Alan Shearer:Welcome back to The Rest is Football La Liga with Alex Aljamie, Gary Lineker, discussing the weekend's fixtures. It looked like Atletico were going to continue their run, I thought. And then, well, they had a red card kind of sport a bit for them, didn't it? Yes, that red card changed the game. And silly, wasn't it, from Clem and Longley? It was silly. 14 minutes into yellows. I mean, he only just put his arm on his shoulder. but if you've just had a yellow card, don't give the referee the opportunity to do that. I mean, I always think the bar should be slightly higher for a second yellow than perhaps an ordinary yellow nowadays because they do tend to brandish cards for basically very little these days.

22:22Alan Shearer:So you've got to think, you've got to think. But the players know that. Exactly. But good result for Celso Vigo, not good for Atletico Madrid who were on a three-game winning run. They'd scored 13 goals, big win in the Champions League midweek against Eintracht Frankfurt. That massive Derby Day win as well. And then this really disappointing from them. And I like this for Celta Vigo. They've six one-all draws already this season. Yeah, I know. Yet to him, but that's a lot of one-all draws, isn't it? Well, we're not exactly 30 games into the season, are we? Exactly. But Iago Aspas came on and...

22:57Alan Shearer:I know. He must be, what? 38. Yeah, he's 38. And it was his 533rd appearance for Celta Vigo, which equals a record, and came on and very apt that he scored and was brilliant. So much of the play went through him when he came on. But disappointing for Atletico Madrid, who had a chance to move up into the top four, which is incredible, really, after their start to the season. What's the view now in Madrid around? Because we were talking about you saying about you've got some friends that were kind of fed up with Diego Simeone. I guess now they're back in love with him. I think it's difficult. My one Atletico fan who I speak to a lot, what did he say the other day to me?

23:46He said, Diego Simeone makes good players average and average players good. Which I thought was interesting. Hang on a minute. Hang on a minute. Good players average.

23:57Alan Shearer:An average player is good. Yeah. But he strongly believes his time is up. Yeah. I'm not sure how that's even... So I presume then once he makes the average player good, then he makes that player average again. It's like... And vice versa. So I think that's what's called form. So an average player will have a good game. So then he makes him good. and then a good player of an average game makes him average and then it just goes around and round in circles. I think that's what he was trying to say. Like stuck in a rut for want of a better phrase. Whoever your mate is, I'm not sure you're to take too much.

24:38Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, enough airtime for him.

24:42Alan Shearer:Because you've spent a lot of time in Madrid and it's a long time since I was at Barcelona. And it was a different vibe back then in terms of international breaks. Do Spanish football fans, La Liga football fans, feel the same way as I think the vast majority of English fans, that they despise the international break because it denies our team club football, particularly nowadays when international football is not particularly exciting generally until you get to a tournament? Yeah, but the Spanish football, the Spanish team, they play very good football, don't they? I think it's a tricky one really I don't think we get in Spain I don't think there's the same feeling that there is here of people actually despising the well not despising but you know what I mean counting down the days until the Premier League football comes back I feel like in general the Spanish are better at just taking a bit of time off and relaxing and switching off than we are you know to the beach to the beach let's relax they've got it all right but we are more intense We're more intense.

25:52We want to keep going all the time. Just one interesting thing about the Atletico game. I want to know what you think about this. He brought on Javi Gallan and then 20 minutes later, he took him off for Alex Baina. What is that like as a player when you've been on the pitch for 20 minutes, subbed on and subbed off?

26:11Alan Shearer:Why are you asking me that question? I mean, A, well, you know, it wasn't a sub and B, God, I wouldn't have been taken off again after Boone. No, I was kidding. obviously but um it would feel a bit humiliating i imagine um i mean also in my day there were hardly any subs you know but i think when i started there were one and by the time i finished my career then i've been two or three um so there wasn't the rotation of substitutes like they are now so that can happen if it's safe for a red card tactical or something massively tactical I think you can understand that because sometimes if you start a game that can be a red card in the first 10-15 minutes and you're the one that sacrificed.

26:58Alan Shearer:So you get subbed. And I suppose coming on as a sub and the same thing happening, that would be acceptable to yourself. You would understand it. If you've come on and 20 minutes later you're hooked because you're not playing very well, that hurts. That's going to hurt. as any professional football would admit. I would think it's the embarrassment as much as anything else as you walk off. Yeah, he didn't look happy. He didn't look happy. And neither did Conor Gallagher, by the way, who came on at the bitter end again. I'm not sure what's going on there really, but he needs to be starting football matches.

27:37We've said it before. He's not the type of player that can come on at the very end of the game and change it. But it must be really frustrating for him in a World Cup year as well. It was a return to winning ways for Athletic Club. Much needed win against Mallorca. They'd gone six games without a win, but a massive three points. They're now level on points with Atletico Madrid, Sevilla. But really needed that win, didn't they, Gary?

28:04Alan Shearer:Yeah, definitely. I think it's a lot of help. I saw a better performance and it was quite a late winner after a quite remarkable equaliser. What was that? Was that a cross or was it a golasso? Either way, it's a golasso. No, it was definitely a cross. Nobody's surprised if you got that. If it were Messi, you could think maybe he meant it. Yeah, it was a misjudged cross, wasn't it? I mean, the thing is, you could describe it as a really rotten cross or a really great cross. Yeah. I'd call it a great cross. But you can see almost a shock on his face, I think, when it flew in. Yeah, but big positive as well for Athletic Club is the return of Nico Williams.

28:47Nico was back, yeah. And they've really missed him. I think, obviously, they haven't been on a good run. They haven't really been scoring goals. But Nico Williams is the type of player that can turn their season around. I know it's early days and it's turning the season around, but his return will have a massive impact.

29:04Alan Shearer:And his brother, obviously, in Yaki, scored a penalty, although that was another one very similar to Vinicius's penalty. Same side, went under the keep of club, should probably save that one, I thought. But again, it doesn't matter if they go in. Yeah, and then Alejandro Rego came off the bench scoring his first goal for the club to win the game. Yeah, big three points for Athletic Club. Yeah, absolutely.
