In short

A Rest is Football La Liga roundup focused on Real Madrid’s shocking 1-0 loss to Mallorca (and what it means for the title race) and Barcelona’s response with a comeback win at Atletico, plus standout individual performances and broader league implications.

Guests

Alex Algeo (football host/analyst; travels to cover matches like West Ham vs Leeds in the FA Cup and Sporting vs Arsenal in Lisbon) and Gary Lineker (former England striker; co-host).

Key claims

Real Madrid “gifted” the league to Barcelona after a lacklustre, low-fight performance at Mallorca; the defeat makes the Champions League tie vs Bayern Munich the “all eggs in one basket” focus. Barcelona capitalized on the slip and can potentially win the title at the Clasico.

Notable examples

Mbappe’s missed chances vs Mallorca; Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi scoring (19 league goals) and a key save by Leo Roman; Camavinga’s lethargy on Mallorca’s first goal; Barcelona starting Marcus Rashford left with Dani Olmo up front; Lamine Yamal’s standout dribbles and a goal/assist drought amid reported racism incidents; Rashford’s goal and Lewandowski’s finish off João Cancelo’s play.

1:13They just didn't look like a side fighting for a La Liga title. It was weird to watch, really. There was no fight in them.

1:20Alan Shearer:There was nothing really bad about what he did. He just obviously was huffing and puffing a little bit. You've got to admire that. The real greats have that incredible drive. He's been really good this season when he's been given the chance. He's had an impact every time. You know, if he can keep this form going now, I think he's an absolute must-start for England. Because Marcus in form, when he's in form and confident and happy, boy, he's hard to stop.

1:53Alan Shearer:Hello and welcome to the Rest is Football La Liga episode with Alex Algeo and me, Gary Lineker. And we're doing this on Sunday morning, even though quite a few of the fixtures are still to play. So slightly different, Alex, because you are so busy. We've got to fit into your schedule. I'll be back and do the roundup tomorrow morning and get it out for you as usual on Tuesday. So where are you this time? Where am I this time? I am off to West Ham, Leeds in the FA Cup later. Oh, you're down the road. Down the road and then straight to Lisbon for Sporting Club against Arsenal. God, you do some football games, don't you?

2:35Alan Shearer:Do you ever tally up how many you've ticked off, say, this year? I actually don't count because I just try and take each one. I sound like the player I take each one. No, don't say I'll teach each game. I'll take each game as it comes. Please don't ever say that. that is a fine Alex that is a fine that's that's a pound fine I'll give you a pound but it's true though because it's the only way I can sort of cope because if I thought about all the games I have from now until let's say even the end of the summer including the World Cup I think it would be slightly overwhelming so it's much easier to wake up in the morning and think right I've got to get to West Ham today get there do my job come home and then I'll think about Lisbon you've done too You've done too many post-match interviews with managers.

3:19Alan Shearer:I really have, haven't I? It's one competition at a time, Gary. Let me get the FA Cup out of the way and then I'll start thinking about the champions. One hotel at a time, really, for you, isn't it? Exactly. That as well. I should start rating the hotels. I could have a little travel business on the side. You could be an influencer. You can influence me. Can I give you one bit of advice about influencers? Or as an influencer yourself. As an influencer. No, I'm not an influencer, but I've watched a lot of influencers. and I would say in influencing if that that is a word I think it probably I think so two influences a verb yes exactly in influencing you cannot cannot just take one game at a time you have to you have to sometimes go ahead okay that is true that's my only advice that is true map it all out um let's discuss what was obviously a hugely um pivotal um weekend of football a Saturday in La Liga with Real Madrid surprisingly losing to Mallorca and then Barca winning away at Atletico, which is never an easy thing to do.

4:27Alan Shearer:No hay Liga. No hay Liga. No hay Liga. And as the headline of AS said, El Madrid regala La Liga. They gifted the league. So, yeah, totally gifted the league to Barcelona. A lacklustre performance. They should not have lost away at Mallorca. Mallorca team that lost last weekend or before the international break to Elche. Relegation rivals there in the bottom three. Mallorca were at the start of the weekend. So, yeah, really, really terrible result for Real Madrid. And it's just unbelievable, really, because this is the Real Madrid side that I watched at the Etihad, knocked Manchester City out. There's something about the Champions League, isn't there?

5:04Alan Shearer:It's weird. Well, I think it was Camavinga who came out after the last league game. And he said, there's something about the weekend matches which we just don't play well. Maybe they're not taking one game at a time. Maybe not. Maybe not. Listen to my advice, guys. But no, he said, but when we hear that Champions League anthem, there's something different inside of us. But you can't really say that. You've got to put in good performances, whatever the competition is. But yeah, seven points now. Maybe they should play the Champions League anthem for that league again. To get them in the mood. To try that.

5:40Alan Shearer:I mean, that sounds, And I mean, that's almost admitting that you can only get up for big games, which is obviously a flaw for any team or any footballer. It's very, very odd, isn't it? I mean, I know they've had a few injuries and players have been in and out. Mbappe was back. First time since Feb that he started. I mean, he went close about three times. Great save. Leo Roman in the Mallorca goal was brilliant, wasn't he? That one save with his outstretched leg that was superb, but still six shots from Mbappe and he should have put one of them away for sure. Fede Valverde, I think they really missed him.

6:13He was suspended after that dodge red card in the Madrid derby. Maybe shouldn't have been a red, but anyway, yeah, he was suspended. So I think they definitely missed him because he's been outstanding in recent weeks. And also Vinny Jr. was rested after the international break. So he was on the bench. I did notice that every time the cameras panned him on the Madrid bench, he was yawning, which was...

6:35Alan Shearer:Was he? Yeah, not a great look, is it? Well, he wasn't on his own. This is true. This is true. But yeah, they started okay. They did start the game okay, but they just got worse and worse. And they just didn't look like a side fighting for a La Liga title. It was weird to watch, really. There was no fight in them. What happens if they win the Champions League? Which seems unlikely to me because I think they're miles off it. And I know you, I've said this before about Real Madrid and the Champions League. And there was that season when they were batted by Man City, but somehow managed to win. And then even in the final, they were the second best team in it and they won because they seemed to have this weird, weird thing with the Champions League.

7:17Alan Shearer:But if they did win the Champions League, they're obviously now, I don't think there's any chance that they, even if they win the Classico that's coming up. No. I don't think there's much chance of them turning that round. For Arboloha, I'm thinking. I think win the Champions League in Arboloha is okay. to go and win their 16th European Cup would be enough to keep him there a little bit longer, for sure. I don't think they'll get rid of him. But they really like him at the club. I think the players really like him as well. But he came out and took full responsibility after that defeat. What did he say?

7:50He said, this defeat is mine, absolutely all mine. And then he said, right, they need to leave this dressing room today and only be thinking about the Champions League. Massive tie against Bayern Munich. I've got a feeling that they'll be okay, which is just weird. You lose to Mallorca and then go and beat Bayern Munich. Well, I'm just imagining they are. I think they will. I don't know.

8:12Alan Shearer:They've done it in the past, in the recent past, but I think they've done it with better teams. I think you've got to look at that. I think the midfield now compared with that of Casemiro, Modric and Kruz is miles off that. So, yes, they do seem to find a way, but I'm not sure they're going to keep getting away with it. So Bayern have been really, really good this season under Vincent, improving. Kane's in top form, although we don't know how bad his injury is, whether he'll be part of that team that plays. But that is huge now. I mean, the significance of that game is probably quadrupled in significance now for Real Madrid, especially with the press and the fans and the expectancy.

8:55Yeah, mind my Easter pun, but all eggs in Champions League basket. For sure, for sure. That's all they'll be playing for, you know, from now until the end of the season, which actually could mean that their season could be over in a couple of weeks.

9:10Alan Shearer:How hard are the media on them at the moment, Alex? Well, I'm looking at some of the headlines here, and it's just basically saying what Marquez say, el Madrid se rinde, just like they give up. I think the first goal is a good example of that, actually. Mallorca's first goal. Camavinga was sort of just jogging back just so slow and you know we don't really want to criticise Trent we want him to do well but he was also just a bit lethargic yeah lethargic is I think the right word it was his corner wasn't it for Militao's superb header which was a moment of brilliance but one moment of brilliance amongst a lot of pretty shoddy football yeah it's a really good cross from Trent as well wasn't there for a chance I think it was Ardegolere early on but it was a very lacklustre Real Madrid performance all round, I thought.

9:55Yeah, yeah, yeah, completely agree. So, yeah, I think the general view in Spain is that they're just giving it away. You know, they're just giving up and there's not a lot of, yeah, fight or anything that we normally associate with Real Madrid. What do they say? Hasta el final. Like, we keep going to the end. Vamos Real. That's, you know, their motto. And that's certainly, hasta el final, vamos Real was not happening in the game against Mallorca. And actually, a really great moment for Vedat Maurici, who's been superb this season for Mallorca. 19 league goals and real disappointment. Yeah, I was going to say, with Kosovo not qualifying for the World Cup.

10:32So a great moment for him. And he missed a penalty against Elche as well in the last league game. So I think, yeah, a huge moment for him and a huge three points for Mallorca as well, who started the weekend down in the drop zone.

10:48Alan Shearer:I'll tell you what, let's take a little break there, Alex, and then talk about perhaps the Barcelona game and Jamal's great performance. And of course, a really, really good goal from Marcus Rashford when we come back. This episode is brought to you by Whoop. In the modern game, of course, there are a lot more games and that feeling of being slightly off by Monday. And that's how it shows up. Not as an injury, it's just fatigue creeping in. 12:51Alan Shearer:Welcome back to the Rest is Football La Liga version with Alex Alge and me, Gary Lineker, to turn our attention to Barcelona. I mean, they were handed that huge fillet, weren't they, before the game that they already knew that Real Madrid had lost all three points. And so they went into what was, I would say they probably thought this is a significant weekend and they would have taken finishing that weekend on the same points difference as there is now. But not only did Madrid lose, Barca came from behind impressively. Do you remember what it was like back in the day? Can you remember any moments when you knew a result just before you head out to the pitch and what did that do to you?

13:33Hang on a minute, Alex. Hang on a minute.

13:35Alan Shearer:What are you saying? Can you possibly remember that long ago? Is that what you're saying? You know what I mean. You know what I mean. Just any moments when you heard a result just before you went out and did that motivate you or did it put more pressure on? Like, oh, we can't screw this up now. See? Now, I'm only saying this, Alex, because you've got to remember when I played that predominantly the games were all played at the same time, right? Now, you will get some changes in kickoff times, but generally in England, we always played at three. It was always three o 'clock on the Saturday. There wasn't a live TV game at 5.30.

14:12Alan Shearer:It wasn't like that. So everyone played at pretty much the same time. So having said that, you definitely look at results after of how things have been affected. But it was so long ago, it was slightly. It was in the dark days, the dark days of black and white television. So it was a bit different back then Is what you're trying to say So it was rare that you'd hear of a score Before you went out I mean it did happen in Spain Because they did play at different times And god I just missed out on the title Every single year I was there So probably I'm trying to Just get rid of those memories Erase those memories Erase them But I think Barcelona I think they firstly were handed a huge present from Real Madrid, but they made the most of it and did what they had to do.

15:08Interesting what Hansi Flick did as well, didn't he? Because he started Marcus Rashford on the left and then Dani Olmo up front. Rafinha, massive blow. He's out now. He got injured during the international break, out for a month. So that's, yeah, not good for Barcelona. So Marcus Rashford on the left and Dani Olmo up front, which was interesting.

15:30Alan Shearer:He probably wanted to rest Lewandowski obviously came on and scored Yeah, came on for Rashford And then Diego Simeone put Nico Gonzalez, a winger obviously up against Laminia Mal which didn't go so well for Nico Gonzalez Not a great idea Didn't really work Some of the bits that Laminia Mal did, I mean the one where the nutmeg on the halfway line and then the instant outside of the foot perfectly bent precision type pass that was exquisite. There was a dribble, I think it was in the second half where he was surrounded. He got through a gap between two players. Then he went through two more players and narrowly hit his shot just wide.

16:13Alan Shearer:He flicked over the keeper and hit the post. And he had the hump at the end of the game, didn't he? I think because he hadn't got a goal or an assist either, I don't think. Yeah. I actually, I messaged a friend of mine that was at the game this morning just saying what was up with the Lamine because I saw he didn't celebrate the second goal. And I don't know whether something happened in the stadium that I didn't read about or see. And he just replied saying, well, he did say actually it was a tough week for him with the racism stuff. I don't know if you saw that during the international break, which was awful.

16:44Alan Shearer:Appalling. I mean, Spain have been very good in terms of the government recently and allowing more immigrants in. And they've stood up against what's been going on in Gaza and things like that. And then to hear that in a stadium was pretty awful, I thought. Yeah, pretty horrific. Pretty horrific. Jump if you're not a Muslim. I mean, come on. I mean, come on. Just, yeah, terrible. Terrible. So I think he's generally had a pretty tricky week and then was wound up because he wanted to score, prove a point, and he tried everything. He played brilliantly and couldn't get his goal. And I think he acted like you'd expect an 18-year-old to act.

17:25Alan Shearer:Well, that's what you've got to remember, isn't it? Have a little sulk, get the hump, throw your toys out the pram for a bit. He's young. He's really young. I was like that at 28, Alex. I wasn't as good as him. Let me state that now. I'm not comparing myself to Lumi and Eumali in any way. If we win 3-0 and I didn't score, I'd have the hump. I'm sorry. I'd just be miserable after the game. I mean, that's just because I don't feel like I've done what I'm supposed to do. And I think that even though he was, I mean, I don't know why he's got the hump. with his, he definitely couldn't have had the hump with his own performance, but obviously not assisted or scoring or we don't know what's going on.

18:02Alan Shearer:As you said, he's a teenager and that's the madness about him, isn't it? He seems to have been around for ages. I know, I know. And I think it shows how much he cares, which is a good thing. And as he gets older, I'm sure he'll learn how to manage those emotions because more experienced players, I'm sure, feel exactly the same way if they haven't scored and they're frustrated, but they know how to deal with it, get in the Jesse room maybe then yeah hi's it get in the Jesse room throw some things around if they want to and there are no cameras uh and no one will ever know so I think that's what he'll learn as he gets older but I think in a way it is there was nothing really bad that what he did he just obviously was huffing and puffing a little bit you know so and you've got to admire that you know the the real greats have that incredible drive and some people you go right this young man's coming through he has got an ability the like of which we very very very rarely see at such a tender age and the one thing that there are a couple of other things that need to go now to to make sure that you take full advantage of those extraordinary gifts that you've been given and that's obviously there's an element of good fortune in terms with injuries and things like that because things can up and there's the off-field thing that can go awry but above everything else is the mental strength and the commitment and ambition and ultimately the drive to take yourself to the absolute top that's what we've seen with the likes of with Messi and Ronaldo I'm just take the two from our most recent generation not only were they blessed with amazing ability but that drive to succeed and that competitiveness and i would say that was a sign that laminio mal might have that and i hope i hope i'm i'm proven to be correct down the line because that's the only thing that i can think of that would stop him becoming the next thing the next one if you like um would be some kind of issues off the field or in his own mind because everything else is there everything else was there and I was actually mildly encouraged by that.

20:11What, seeing him react like that?

20:12Alan Shearer:Yeah, that he wasn't satisfied. He wasn't satisfied. Even with the victory and even with the great performance, he expected more of himself. If that is indeed why he was huffing that whole thing. No, I think so. What did Hansi Flick say? He said he was a bit upset because it was a match with a lot of emotions, but it's normal. Now he's back in the locker room. He's doing fine. So, yeah, we move on. We move forward. we move forward we should move on to Marcus Rashford he's not really had much of a look in lately he's come on in a lot of games and he's always done well and everyone's you know seemingly pleased with him but he needs to play a little bit because there's a World Cup coming up and obviously Rafinha's injured which opens a space for him I'm really pleased that he started Marcus and well he really did contribute what a cracking goal I know his element of fortune went through the keeper's legs but the play before that was beautiful Yeah, brilliant goal, superb goal.

21:07And he's been really good this season when he's been given the chance. Yeah, he hasn't played that much and hasn't started a lot of games, but he has come on. And I can't think of a game where he's not done anything, where he's had a really quiet game when he's come on. I don't think there's been much criticism. He's had an impact every time he's been brought on. No criticism of him anywhere, either on or off the pitch.

21:33Alan Shearer:Which is important. Which did happen at Manchester United, but we're slightly different over here. He seems to have accepted the fact that he's probably a squad player at the moment and that Rafinha and Laminya Mala are ahead of him. And I would suggest they are two of the world's top, well, definitely in the top five or six players in the world at the moment. So that's no sight. He can fill in at centre forward. At times for Lewandowski, I don't think that's his real... We all know Marcus's position's on the left. You know, if he can keep this form going now, I think he's an absolute must-start for England if he's fit in the World Cup on that left-hand side.

22:19Alan Shearer:Because Marcus in form, when he's in form and confident and happy, boy, he's hard to stop. Yeah, yeah, he certainly is. And then he was taken off and it was, what, Robert Lewandowski that came on for him and scored. That was a proper goal, by the way. It was just hitting and it just went in. That's when you know you're a gifted goal scorer. Well, he did well to react, didn't he? Well, I think he just went, oh, and it hit him and went in. Yeah, it was a brilliant play from João Cancelo down the left, wasn't it? And then, yeah, it was his effort that bounced off Musso and then Lewandowski was at right place, right time.

22:59Take it. It's a goal. It's another goal. And a big three points.

23:04Alan Shearer:Cancelo's come in and done really well at Barca, hasn't he? Because he looked such a great player at Man City, didn't he? And then his career stuttered a little bit towards the end of that and then he moved on. He's finding myself at Barcelona now. I mean, the talent's always been there. He went to Saudi, didn't he, to play for Al-Halal? After Bayern, yeah, where it obviously didn't quite happen for him. And then to suddenly come back from... It's not the usual way round, is it? coming back from Saudi to Barcelona, you were thinking, well, has he still got that commitment drive? I mean, ability doesn't leave you.

23:39Alan Shearer:He's still a relatively young man. Yeah, no, clearly. He probably felt like he had a lot left in him still. Wanted to play at the highest level. Maybe frustrating for him out in Saudi Arabia at times. So yeah, I know he's been brilliant. I thought that when I was watching him at St. James's Park, actually, the other week. um no brilliant player brilliant player but they were playing against 10 men because nico gonzalez was sent off for bringing down lamin what's the ref doing there i mean he said he's got a second yellow card and then vr have intervened haven't they and he's thinking oh right okay so he's changed his second yellow card to a straight straight red he's off anyway i mean pointless yeah i don't think it was same outcome isn't it unless the suspension changes length of suspension potentially.

24:24Alan Shearer:Well, it was actually, it was a goal, denying a goal scoring opportunity, wasn't it? Well, in the Premier League, in England, I should say, it is one game as is that of two yellow cards. So, I mean, I just, I mean, it's quite encouraging to see though, isn't it? That VR is as absurd in Spain as it is in England. As it is here. Yeah. As it is. And every fan, pretty much I've spoken to from every country, hates it with a passion. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I think they were checking for a possible offside as well. Well, they did check that, but we know that's beside the point. But I think once he went through, it was denying a goal-scoring opportunity.

25:05And then they were livid, weren't they, that Gerard Martin wasn't sent off. Atletico were livid.

25:11Alan Shearer:Well, he got let off. And yeah, Hansi Flick said, yeah, it's not a red card, but I don't think Diego Simeone agreed with him. Would it be celebrating quite yet in Barcelona? not yet well eight games to go yeah seven points but they could win the league at El Clasico is that mathematically the case yeah well done Alex good spot that would be a beautiful thing may I say not necessarily for you Real Madrid loving fans can you imagine you know I was saying we should go to El Clasico we don't need to go to El Clasico has that been done when has that been done when the league won in a at a Clasico. It must have been at some point.

25:56Yeah.

25:56Alan Shearer:I can't remember one, but that would be, that would be perfect planning, wouldn't it? Imagine, imagine. At the Nou Camp as well. At the Nou Camp. Well, maybe it'd be better for Barcelona to win at the Bernabeu. They'd enjoy that, wouldn't they? They were talking, weren't they, early in the season that they might, by the time the Clasico comes round, they might have probably nearly full camp now. I don't know whether, At the minute, it's kind of half full, isn't it? It's not generating quite the same atmosphere. I just wonder whether they'll let a few more in because it's a Classico. The thought of winning the league at the Classico, they might work a bit faster.

26:35They might work a bit harder to get it finished. So wait and see. You never know. You never know. Eight games, a lot can happen. But it's not looking likely that the Real Madrid will win now. No, it's a shame because we like saying I Liga as opposed to no Eilega.

26:53Alan Shearer:You always want it to go late into the season because it's more exciting for the fans and everything. But I think it's not done yet. Not quite. Not quite. Because if Real Madrid did win the Clásica, that's four points and that can swing. But I think it's highly unlikely. On that note, Alex, you're going off to watch some FA Cup football. I'll bounce back when all the games have been completed to do the round-up this week. because you're working too hard and I just feel bad. I have been away. I have been in America, which was a little bit of work, but mostly fun. So I'm not complaining. I'll be back shortly to round things up.

27:33Alan Shearer:Sevilla are in trouble. They lost 1-0 away to bottom club Real Obiedo on Sunday and find themselves just two points above the relegation zone with eight games remaining. A goal from Rani Unteka saw Rayo Vallecano be Elchi 1-0 in a big result at the bottom. The win sees Rayo move six points clear of the relegation places and leaves Elche in 18th spot. Getafe moved to within three points of the European places with a 2-0 win at home to Athletic Club with goals from Luis Vázquez and Martin Satriano sealing the victory. We had a five-goal thriller at the Mestalla as Celta Vigo beat Valencia 3-2. Guido Rodriguez bagged a brace for Los Che, but goals from Elijah Moriba, Fer Lopez and Williott Svedberg gave the visitors the points.

28:25Alan Shearer:An injury time equaliser from Lucas Boye gave Alaves a 2-2 draw at home to Osasuna. Valentin Rossier and Ante Budimir were on the score sheet for the away side with Tony Martinez netting the other goal for Alaves. Real Sociedad remain in seventh spot after a 2-0 win over Levante thanks to goals from John Martin and Braiz Mendes. And finally, Real Betis and Espanyol played out a 0-0 draw, leaving them in 5th and 10th places, respectively. That's all we've got time for. We'll be back on Wednesday with our series of Premier League greats, the moments that made them with a certain Harry Kane. Look forward to that.

29:09Alan Shearer:But for now, goodbye from me.

Barcelona move seven points clear at the top of La Liga after coming from behind to beat Atlético Madrid. Marcus Rashford returned to the starting lineup following Raphinha’s injury and capped off an impressive display with a goal, if he maintains this form, is he a shoo-in for England’s left side this summer?

Real Madrid, meanwhile, suffered a shock defeat to relegation-threatened Mallorca. Why do Los Blancos continue to struggle in the league while consistently delivering in the Champions League? And if they fall to Bayern Munich, could Álvaro Arbeloa find himself under serious pressure before the season’s end?

Elsewhere, Gary and Alex discuss the remarkable performance from Lamine Yamal. Despite shining, he left the pitch frustrated at not getting on the scoresheet, does that mindset show he has the drive to become one of the all-time greats?
