26Hello and welcome to the Rest is Football question and answer episode with, well, just Micah and myself, Gary Lineker, today. Oh Tom, where is Al again now? This is embarrassing now. The only day I take off is when I can't physically do it. and that might be I'm at work or I'm travelling back from work and even when I'm travelling back he can't be in the car he's sunning himself in Barbados or wherever he is I don't even know where he's staying probably Sandy Lane you're telling me he can't just come on for 20 minutes he's five hours behind I don't think he likes to get up early in the morning nowadays he's getting old he's catching me up he loses it a little bit you know when I mentioned that he can't oh he won't be happy he'll be straight on the group chat when he hears this one go out Micah yes I love why did he he bit brilliantly the last time you did this right we should answer some of your questions thank you very much for sending them in they're predominantly international based which is what we requested of you so thank you very much for that let's start with I think an easy one Joey H what's the best goal ever scored at a World Cup?
46Let me guess who you're going to say. You're going to say Diego Maradona. Diego Armando Maradona. Yes, I knew it. I knew it. I mean, there are other goals we've seen in the history of football that are slightly similar, where someone's pretty much beat half a team from the halfway line and knocked it in. But I think you have to take into consideration the occasion quarter final of a World Cup on a pitch that was a cabbage patch and it was against England the two countries had been at war just a few years two or three four years before that the Falklands or Las Malvinas as they like to call it it was sort of more than just a football match and then and then also added to the fact that he just punched one in just a few minutes before I think it also made it for me until possibly the final of the World Cup in 2022, the most famous or infamous game of football in the history of the sport.
55But to do what Maradona did on that pitch, it's funny, Peter Reid texted me the other day. He's invited me very kindly to watch an Everton game at the new stadium. He says, I've got to come and see the new stadium. So I'm going in a few weeks' time. He said, are you still OK for the game? I said, yeah, I'm in Mexico at the moment. and I'd just been to the Azteca Stadium. I said, I've just been in the stadium where Diego Maradona ran away from you from the halfway line. It seemed it was a bit unfair to remind him, but I would say that one. What would your choice be? I don't expect you to argue with me or it doesn't matter, but your choice.
31I'd probably go with that one, but... You weren't even born, were you? Maybe James Rodriguez. Do you remember that? Oh, the chest and volley. The chest and the volley. And the volley, yeah, for Colombia. Against Uruguay, 2014. The way he did it and the technique, everything about it, shaped up nicely, didn't it? The technique was outstanding. So I'll probably go with that one. I remember one of Bobby Charlton's in 1966. Was it the semi-final, the one he just drilled? Like, woof. He was such a pure strike. Don't forget how heavy those footballs were in 1966. So I think it was the semi against Portugal.
09It might have been one of the other games. Here's one for him. I'm going to throw this one in. The goal, but we do know what this goal is because we chatted about this chap because he was a massive fan of yours. There's a clue, Micah. Do you know where I'm going with this? Yes, Carlos Alberto. Alberto, the fourth and final goal in the final against Italy when they smashed them in 1970 in the World Cup final. and the move, if you watch the whole move, it was unbelievable. And that Pele just put his foot on the ball and he waited for Carlos Alberto and just slotted and he drilled it in the far corner.
49Yeah, that was a good goal. I think we've named three, so that's not bad. And then later on we'll go, ah, I forgot that one. Forgot that one. I've seen a lot of World Cups. McGib, who wins? 2002 Brazil or 2010 Spain? oh my word oh dear Brazil Brazil that Brazil team was unbelievable I mean you could I could go back to 1970 Brazil I know same World Cup I mean Tostal I guess and Pelé all those Carlos Alberto what team that was as well but 2010 Spain I mean you think of the players in that team you know Xavi Iniesta Bosquet Ramos David Silva was in there. David Silva. David V. David V was unbelievably good.
42Our friend of the pod, Cesc Fabregas. Cesc? Wow. He was injured for a bit of the tournament, then came on, got the assist, didn't he, for Iniesta in the final when the Dutch tried to kick the shit out of them. That's with Nigel Dion, didn't he? He got a yellow card. Yeah, he should have been a red. He should have been a red. The chap who's now in charge, we are in our country. Oh, is he? Yeah. What's that? What's that? Oh, was it Howard Webb? Howard Webb, yeah. I don't remember that. I just remember us hammering Dion. Wasn't it the game he gave three yellow cards as well or something stupid? Oh, yes.
16That was a bad game. Yeah, I do. I do remember it now. I mean, they made it an awful final, but for Flamboy and so, that Brazil team. The Brazil team, that's Ronaldinho, Ronaldo. Oh, nine. I mean, what a side that was. Actually, England ran them really close in that quarterfinal. They got a goal up, didn't they? Michael Owen scored, didn't he, early. Yeah, but then Ronaldinho bent one into the far corner. Yeah, top corner from the free kick, although a lot of people claim it was a cross. But he was too good a player to be that, I think, to be that far out with a free kick. What a team. What a team.
54Yeah, I'm going that team. That's my favourite team, I think. I think I'd probably go that. But I'd actually probably go 1970, though, because nostalgia. I told you. And it was the first World Cup I ever watched on telly. Oh, really? Yeah. Yeah. I was only nine. How many shadows did you have back then days? I'm not even talking to me. Yes, you are. No, seriously. Look, now, even from when I was a kid, if you missed something coming back from school, you couldn't then get a replay. EastEnders was a replay, didn't it? You had one Sunday, then a couple through the week or whatnot. But then now you've got YouTube, you've got Netflix.
32Well, you've got a million channels, all the streamers. I can't remember when BBC Two started, to be honest, but it was BBC One. And from what I can remember, when did ITV start? I'm not quite sure. Let's say there wasn't a lot to choose from. And to watch the World Cup, which was live football. I've told the story before. My dad played card game every week and told you Engelbert Humpernick used to come round. I know this sounds mad, but he did. Because he's a Leicester lad, you know, Jerry Dorsey, latterly named Engelbert Humphredink. What a name. And they used to come around every single week and often stay 24 hours.
15On a bank holiday, they might stay 36 hours playing cards all night. My mum used to cook with Twitter. And the only time it ever stopped, ever, ever stopped playing cards was for England against Germany, West Germany, obviously then, in the quarterfinal of the World Cup. And we were winning 2-1. And then he hooked Bobby Charlton. Sir Alfred Ramsey took Bobby Charlton off. And the Germans went on to beat us. Yeah. Gerd Muller put one in. And Uvi Zayla, a little header, kind of. Yeah, that was that. and the game stopped and then I was crying I was crying and they just went right deal them and deal them sharing on playing cards it's like nothing had ever happened so that but that Brazilian team that played in that World Cup and England played them in the qualifiers and there's that famous shot of Bobby Moore and Pele embracing two of the absolute greats of our game but yeah anyway I digressed a little bit there oh I think this one's aimed at you.
29I don't know whether I'm right, Micah, but Lewis Clark asks, what's the best dive in the Premier League by an English right back? That was shown the other day on Somewhere. Where did I see that? Was that on CBS? What was I doing? Yeah, it was on CBS. Carragher did you, didn't he? Proper did me. I was playing for Aston Villa and I was going on a marauding run. You know how I was doing? Top of the shoulder, left, right. And, I was playing against a teammate, Glenn Whelan. We were teammates at Aston Villa. He was at Stoke at the time. And I knew he was going to come in and smash me because he just loved a tackle.
09So I thought, let me try and dive out the way. But then in the end, he stopped. He stopped. So I just looked ridiculous. And I saw I was in the air. I was like a fish out of water. And I, oh, an embarrassment. Sorry. Sorry. out. Every time I look at that, I cringe. To be honest, though, that has happened once or twice. You know, if you think you're going to be smashed by a player, the thing you want to do is get your feet in the air. Correct. If your feet are stuck down, that is dangerous. So one of the arts of taking hits, particularly as a forward, because we take more. And sometimes if you're running and doing that, it does look so much worse than it actually is.
52But I have to say your one, it was, I think. Shocking. I think it is the best dive by Emma Fremier. Yeah, it's not an international dive, but I thought I'd allow that one in anyway. Nath, who's your World Cup dark horse? I mean, the thing I always think about dark horses, if you think a team's going to do well, therefore they are not a dark horse. But, but. But an outside bet. Yes, that's what I was about to say. An outside. Let's say to do well in the tournament because dark horses don't win World Cups. Yes, I would say that. I don't think that's fair. Got an ink of one, really. I'm going to say Norway, Erling Haarlem.
33Well, I mean, last night they won 4-1 away in Italy, which was a great performance and he got two more. He got 16 goals or something in eight qualifying games. In terms of out and out goal scorers, he's on, he's just, this fella's an absolute machine. I just think they've got decent enough players though. Erdegaard. yeah I remember Solov though as well and I got a guy called Noosa well Solov's at Atletico and he's scored a few he's not entirely loved by the Atletico fans yeah but he works hard for the team yeah he's a big lad Sander Berg remember Berger Sander Berger yeah I mean they yeah what quarter finalish they could maybe yeah maybe if you've got Haaland though and if you if you can be solid the Philippines will push them as well because you're not going to sit back against Norway which actually plays into the strengths of Erling because, I mean, you can just hoof it behind him.
27Exactly. He can give you five yards start and motor, once he gets moving. Yeah, so that's not a bad shout. Oscar Bob have got as well. Ryanson, you know the fullback for Dortmund? Mm-hmm. Yeah, he's not. Ayah, Ayah, Remford, they've got some good players. I don't think they can win it, but if they've got a decent draw, get... quarters, semis, possibly. It's a good shout, that one. I'm just buying time here to try and think of... I'm going to go Morocco. They've actually got some really good players and some good young players. I don't know whether you've seen how well they've done in one of the, I can't remember which age group, but one of the tournaments, really good.
14They've got a couple of star young players and they've got some superstars as well. Hakimi. Hakimi. Yeah, PSG. So maybe Morocco. Maybe it's Africa's turn. Maybe, maybe. Finally. I mean, they went close, didn't they? They played brilliantly three and a half years ago. So I'll go with that. You've just got to think, haven't you, guys? Hot weather. Teams who can cope with the weather. It's going to be boiling over there in the summer. Yeah, it will be, yeah. So obviously they play in Africa. It's really hot when they play. But the thing is that the teams do. I mean, I remember when we played in 86 in Mexico, and I'm sorry to harp on about that, Micah, but we used to train in steam baths and at altitude to try and deal with it.
02Steam baths with Bobby, we thought, what the hell are we doing here? We're all like doing press-ups and push-ups and, you know, running on the spot because obviously you can't run much in a bloody steam room. There's not much room. And just to get your sweat glands used to acclimatise, I mean, I don't know what the science is in that because there wasn't much science involved in training back in 1970. But I think Bobby just thought, well, steam rooms are hot. Maybe if you run around in there, that will help us. And then we had to train at altitude. And we had the difficulty of coming down to Monterrey, which was not that high, a couple of thousand feet, for the group games.
38And it was 40-odd degrees centigrade, which I've mentioned before is ludicrous. And then we had to go to Mexico City, which is just over 7 ,000 feet, and cope with the altitude. So, and we did all right. We did all right. And if you think about it, Micah, World Cups are always hot, really. I thought, funnily enough, everyone feared the Qatar World Cup of being too hot, but it was there, winter. So when it's in the Southern Hemisphere, it's not necessarily, you know, it can be quite cool. But if you're playing in the Northern Hemisphere, even in Europe, it's so hot. Russia was, some of the games were unbelievably hot.
14So I'm not sure that's much of an excuse. It depends though, doesn't it? You can play in the heat if you keep the ball. If you keep the ball, you've got no problem. That's why Spain always do well no matter where they play. Exactly. It really is. I mean, actually, the South Africa World Cup was pretty cold most of the time, bizarrely, because it was the winter, but they still kept the ball because they were quite a good team. Right. Okay, let's take a breather there. When we come back, we'll answer a few more of your questions. This question is brought to you by Fuse Energy, our new presenting partners here at The Rest is Football.
50We are very pleased to have them on board, a proper addition to the squad. Every month, Fuse are giving their customers a chance to send in a question for us to tackle on the show. To kick things off, we have a brilliant one from George. He's a professional wildlife photographer just back from a trip to Zambia. Not a bad way to spend your time. George has challenged us to build a five-a-side team using current Premier League players, but each position has to match an animal. Interesting. Five animals, five roles, five players. But he has given us the animals. So we'll start with that. I know this is a bit random, boys.
33We'll have to start with an animal, which is the octopus in goal. I don't know any eight-legged or eight-armed goalkeepers. The best goalkeeper in the Premier League. Shall we just go, when fit, Alisson? Probably, wouldn't he? Would you say so? Alisson or performing, Raya. Raya's been good. Raya's been brilliant. As has consistently Jordan Pickford, I would throw in there as well. Probably Alisson when fit. He's special. Okay, we're all agreed. So, Alison the Octopus, as we now know him. He's gone for a rhino for a defender. No horny jokes, please, at this point. Big, powerful, fearless. Who is your brick wall?
27I'm going Gabriel. Got to be Gabriel, yeah. Oh, what a shout. Yeah, Gabriel, definitely. Had to be Gabriel. Right. An all-rounder, which he's gone for a wolf, which is interesting so doesn't have to play for Wolves does he?
46Should we put a Wolves player in? Come on it makes it it makes it better now Not the way they're playing absolutely not no chance I'm not sure we can we can go in for it like grit stamina intelligence links everything together howls at night what about Anderson he's been brilliant hasn't he for England and stuff? No Declan Rice hasn't it? Declan Kaiseido Kaiseido Kaiseido Declan Rice who we going who we going with well we've got Arsenal players haven't we already let's go Kaiseido alright Kaiseido it's Kaiseido it's excellent ok the playmaker he's gone for an eagle Wharton eagles hey Al's come out finally he's come to the party He's fine.
38Come on, that's the oven up. It took you about 10 seconds to get that one. That was a bold eagle himself, sir. What about Bruno? Which one? Finanche. Finanche. Come on, you've got the wrong one, guys.
56Finanche. He's a magpie, not an eagle for crying out loud, Alan. Get it right. Very good, guys. Very good. Right, on to the easiest one. The cheetah. Cheetah, that's unfair calling strikers cheaters. Oh, the animal. Explosive pace. Easy, Holland. Ruthless finishing. Easy, easy, Holland. That'd be the quickest striker in the Premier League. The easiest one of all. Great question from George. If you're a Fuse customer and you want to ask us something on the show, you can get involved too. 22:37Welcome back to the Rest is Football question and answer episode with Big Meeks and me, Lynx, as I was always called when I was a footballer. I was Lynx when I was a footballer. Yeah. Again, I'll go back to Peter Reid. He still called me that when he called me the other day. Gazza called you Lynx. You know when we did the pod? Yeah, yeah, yeah. When I was a player, I was always Lynx and then gradually drifted away. So, yeah. Who would your starting left back be for England? And Josh asks that question. You can add your surnames, you know, guys, when you're asking questions. Because otherwise, you can go to your mates, oh, I just got my question read out.
15And they went, oh, really? I never heard it. They went, yeah, he said Josh. He said, well, that could have been any Josh. Could have been anyone, yeah. Put your surnames in there. Who would you be starting? I mean, it's not easy now. Because I'm always a bit wary of these questions. Because it's seven months before a World Cup. Someone will see this in seven months' time and go, why did you pick him? so there is a danger I think we can mention those in contention I mean Nico O 'Reilly stepped in we've seen the last couple of days I mean he's not even a left back really he's a class yeah well Trent ended up a midfield player then he ended up playing right back in the first team and then stuck there because he was so bloody good at it I would go Miles Lewis-Skelly I think he's a special talent special who else is there Lewis Hall yeah Lewis Hall's very good and he's consistent you know what you're going to get I just feel Miles Lewis Skelly has got that X factor yeah when he plays in the Champions League the only thing that will stop him now is he going to play enough football between now and the end of the season because Arsenal are so strong now Calafiore has been doing a brilliant job there hasn't he didn't he get injured in the international break Calafiore there's reports that were saying that as did Gabriel yeah Gabriel for Arsenal I mean, we've got to remember we'll have to change our fantasy teams because everyone's got him.
36Here, see, see what I'm on. I'm off to play free hit this week, guys. After your disaster of last week. It's a disaster. I was feeling, oh, let's not talk about left fans. That's not the question here. So you start in left, and don't forget, don't forget Luke Shaw. A bit of experience, and he can play on the left side number three should Tuchel decide to do that which I suspect he won't but he's come back playing really well at Man United he's a good player Luke's a good player you know he's a top player you know I know he gets a lot of stick but he's a really good player the only thing is I just I wouldn't take any chances his fitness with players who have not played consistently over the last couple of seasons I just don't think it's worth it so Lewis Scully Or Nico O 'Reilly, either or.
33Nico O 'Reilly, yeah. Depends who plays more football between now and the end of the season. Yeah, I mean, you look at the full-backs on both sides. I mean, was it two years ago, wasn't it? Almost two years ago, we were going, left-back was such a problem position. Because Luke sure wasn't fit and he came in, and he did really well considering he hadn't played any football. Trippi did well, though, left-back, didn't he? Trippi can, but we were playing players on the other side. Side correct, yeah. When now you've got various choices. And even on the other side, I mean, there's a list there. Rhys James, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jed Spence, just...
14Well, Jed Spence, we've not mentioned him left-back. He plays left-back for Spurs, doesn't he? I forgot Jed Spence. He can play both sides, can't he, Jed Spence? But left-back. But he's made a real late run. How have I forgot Jed Spence? Jed Spence you know what I'd play Jed Spence that's who I would play really you'd go ahead ahead of Louis Skelly because he plays every week he does well he does at the minute and and he plays yeah he's very good defensively he's rapping as well and he's a good offensively from the left you know when we talked about Trippier when he was opening up and it was taking him too long some reason Spence can play both sides equally as well the timing it takes him to take a touch and play forward he does it equally as good as on the right and the left so you know what I'd go Spence and also if you can play both sides that's a big advantage for you for a manager to put in a squad so I mean the choices the choices amazing and also let's say because someone will play this in about five months I'll say why are you saying him because one of them will have lost four we are doing this in November we're doing this in November I'm not going to go on an England start in 11 Tom King has asked that we're not doing that now we're not doing that now because it's too early to start doing that stuff save it Tom King we'll come back to you we'll come back to you Tom King in a few months time this is an interesting one from Batista not Batiston he was a player who is your sleeper pick for the England side what does that mean?
53I think he means a surprise one perhaps we haven't I mean, the squad's enormous and the talent pool is enormous at the moment. So that's quite difficult. Someone perhaps to sneak in just for his experience and not to play. But it depends here because they're talking about enlarging the squads, which I think, I mean, is actually quite ridiculous. Because, I mean, can you imagine being a coach and you're suddenly saying, right you've got a squad of 30 now and you've got to keep almost two-thirds of your players happy that are not playing I mean what because you know what players are like if they're not playing they're whining so if in those circumstances I think you might bring in one or two youngsters just to experience it so I'm going to go Max Dowman who's a child I like your thinking guys but but I don't think he will be in the squad but I only say this if they do this thing that's being rumoured which surely they won't is enlarging the squads to around 30 I take your testament on that but I think then too much pressure is put on him if you look at remember for your World Cup where he got picked for the World Cup yeah with Sven so that would have been what 2006 2006 World Cup and he'd not played a game in the Premier League obviously Max Damer playing in the Premier League.
20But after that, his life just changed. There was too much pressure. Yeah, that's a good point. Theo Walker was a very good player. But everyone after that, and he scored a hat-trick for England in one of his games. Yeah, he did. And it was just too much. And everyone expected that. And I feel like it could ruin him if it goes too soon. Didn't ruin his Lamin-Jumel there. Yeah, but I mean, that's different, isn't it? Well, I mean... Well, shit. Max Stallman is class, but he's not I mean the dreams level no no of course he's not okay oh another little personal one for you James R out of Micah's 13 caps which was his favourite you've got to go debut haven't you first one it's so special isn't it oh it was tough though I was up against Iron Robin yeah was it and you started I started your first appearance was a start it was a start wow that's what I mean I came on at Hampden for, I came on for Glenn Hoddle.
21Did you? Yeah, which is a thrill. I mean, I didn't play in Glenn Hoddle's position, I hasten to add. Yeah, it was at Hampden. And there was only about eight minutes to go. I think the game finished 1-1, but I didn't score anything. But it's amazing. Because you know from that point on, wherever your club you were playing for, you'd have been playing at City then, yeah? Yeah. So whenever it goes, then it goes, Micah Richards, Manchester City, and England. oh it's got a ring to it Borin Amaro, Galenica Leicester City and England oh it's a beautiful it's got to be that feeling that feeling when you're on the pitch as well you just you know when a national anthem's playing yeah and you you want to sing it but then you're trying to concentrate on the game but then you know the camera's on it and you want to show that it's your time to play for your country and you just there's so much emotions going through your head you're like should I be singing it because people are thinking I'm concentrating on the anthem too much and not focusing on the football and all these million things going through your head and you just want to play well don't you don't don't make a mistake that's what you're thinking in the first five minutes I lost a tackle against Robin he ran me ragged but then after about seven minutes I got the first tackle and then Schoen came out this is big me this is my ass hang on a minute hang on a minute this is here lies the difference between a defender and a forward what's your first thought going on to the pitch for your England debut is don't make a mistake not let's score an unbelievable goal let me get the winner or let me create no actually I never thought that but but that is it's funny isn't it the difference mentality between that's why it's easier for strikers no it's not it's easier to stop it's easier to stop stuff than make stuff happen I like the analogy that Michael already used on a podcast as well he said it's easy to tear down a house rather than architect building it or whatever I thought it was really good but you could have a stinker for 90 minutes and get a tap in at the back post Gary Linnick saves England you know I could have a world in hang on a minute can we just stop there I like that headline I could have a worldie for 90 minutes make one bad decision in the game Richards not good enough should be back with a 21 what do you want the headline being Micah Richards stops Iron Robin from making a cross oh well done oh good stuff we've got time for just one more one more last question Luke West has asked I'm not going to answer this but it's quite funny would England be a better team without Harry Kane no Harry's in fire man Harry's playing fire he looks so he looks fit and fresh as well let's hope he goes into the World Cup in this kind of vein last question if England weren't in the World Cup who would you want to win four years ago that would have been easier I'd have said Argentina just for Messi but now he's done it I would say something else.

45You know what? Ronaldo. Portugal. I love Ronaldo. He's won the Euros, hasn't he? But the World Cup, for what he's done for the game. Yeah, I wouldn't disagree with that. That would be incredible. Yeah. And he's had such an amazing... I mean, he's won everything but the World Cup. So, yeah, that's a fair... You know what I like about him as well? Just quickly, guys. He's a little bit flashy. He does like his cars. He does like his houses. Normally that's seen as a negative, but he's managed to turn it into a positive. So as long as you're working hard, you can have nice things. No, I'll also say about Christiana that he's also made incredible donations too.
27Correct. I saw something recently that for the, you know, for the children of Gaza and things like that. I'll do something just to be different. I'd like to see an African nation, Morocco. Morocco. I think they're the most realistic outside chance of doing it. As we said earlier. Yeah, Senegal. Yes. Well, Senegal are really good too. So maybe an African nation. I think it'd be really good for the sport. Really good for the sport. So a nice positive note to finish on. Okay, Micah, that's it for this episode. Thank you once again for sending in your questions. We'll do a few more of these and answer one or two more of the ones you've already sent at some point.
10But for now, goodbye from me. And goodbye. for me. Have a good rest of the week.
