You're like one of those people who loves the smell of a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils. It's just because you have young children. That's why you're filled with dread. End of summer is really melancholy if you have young children, it's true. Are you kidding? It's like the end of a patchwork of camps and medical forms that I look forward to. I guess so. I guess so. In the New York studio, which I would love to be there, but I am in the London studio, we have the lovely Leah Faye Cooper. Vogue's digital star director, and Taylor Antrim, Vogue's deputy editor.
1:04Hi, guys. Hello. Thanks for having us. Hello. Happy to be here in the melancholy end of summer to try to provide some cultural joy. But before we get into cultural joy, let's talk about the news of the week. I mean, Chloe, you have to tell me everything about Doug because all of the covers are just making me so happy and I mean you know it's the scientific evidence that looking at pictures of animals makes you happy and thank you for giving me all these wonderful pictures I'm really glad you told me that last week because when I asked every member of staff to look at 1 ,000 pictures of dogs because we had 56 ,000 submissions when Liam was like I've never looked at so many dogs before I was like it's good for your nervous system it really is Says Dr.
1:55Nottie. I have not either, but I was up for the task. Dog, it's very exciting. Sabrina Carpenter's dogs, I loved. Sergio Clattanoi, one of his great coups to date was getting his friend Sabrina Carpenter to send us a video of her FaceTiming her dogs, Louie and Goodwin, to tell them that they were on the cover of Dog. And you see the dog jumping at the screen in delight. They were obviously thrilled. Oh my God. Mikey Madison told us it was a highlight of her career. Oh, my God. Oscar winner, Mikey Madison. Yes. I will say, and this was never, this is completely by accident, it was never an intention of Doge.
2:38It is an amazing way to actually feel like you get to know a celebrity. They tend to be so guarded in celebrity profiles. And like Lewis Hamilton, who I feel like is so careful and correct about the way he presents himself, talking about his dog. He's like, well, we sleep together, but he snores and he has terrible gas. And it's like this extremely intimate portrait of Louis's life at home with Roscoe. And same with Rosé being like, well, you know, Hank is bilingual because I speak to him in Korean and English, but I gentle parent him until he eats my mom's socks. And then everything. I mean, it's like really too much information.
3:16I interviewed Devin Booker about his two cane corsos, Hector and Haven. And one of the questions we ask everyone is, what's something you wish you could tell your dog? And he was like, I tell them everything. She's like, those are the only ones that I literally tell everything to. One of the questions is what do you wish you could tell your dog? Who came up with that question? I think Hannah. What's the barrier there? Like, what do you wish they could understand? What do you wish they could absorb and understand? But he was like, I tell them everything and I'm pretty sure that they get it. If you and your cane of corsos were at a dinner party.
3:55Hi, I'm Hannah Jackson. I'm a fashion writer at Vogue. And today I'm bringing you guys inside a shoot for Doke here at Petco in Union Square with Muddy Paws. Our colleague Hannah Jackson and the run-through producer Chelsea Daniel went to the shoot with the Doggist and caught some behind the scenes on the shoot where we photographed some of our favorite dogs up for adoption at Muddy Paws Rescue. There are dogs who are waiting for their adoption meetings. There are dogs waiting in vans. Not only was the Doggist apparently extremely popular and a celebrity sighting for people, but the dogs were very excited and activated by this moment for their portrait.
4:40So there's a lot of barking in this audio. It is bustling this morning. The dog street photographer, the Doggist, is becoming the Doggist on our shoot. Right now we are watching him shoot with Nikki, who is a five-year-old, blocky-headed gal. And she has shoulders like a linebacker. She has an underbite. She sticks her tongue out of her mouth. I'm obsessed with her vibe. She's a star in the making. Who wouldn't want her? Oh my god, right now I'm looking at Benji, who is so, so cute, and he's standing on a table getting pets from probably at least five hands right now. Benji is 12 years old, so he's a really old senior, and when I picked him up, he was very matted and very covered in dirt and poop, so we had to cut off a bunch of mats.
5:42but he's a way different dog now and it's only been five days we've only had him for five days my name is elias weiss friedman aka the doggest i make a lot of weird noises i have treats um i'm trying to get the dog's attention and that's when i take a lot of pictures is when they're looking at me and i'll try and get a head tilt by making a weird noise i'll give you an example is my puppy noise and then I guess I make up that sometimes works for this last dog I had to dig deep for a
6:26it's been such a fun day here in Union Square on our joke shoot thanks so much for coming along.
6:39Well, I guess I have to say, apart from Doge, the other thing that's kind of taken over my feed in a way that I was kind of surprised by was like Dua Lipa's vacation in Ibiza. Like, so many memes of her. Her standing on a, what was she doing? She was yoga-ing on a paddleboard. She was yoga on a paddleboard, but also like with a glass on top of her head, dancing. I mean, she looked like she was having the time of her life. She always has the most fun. I mean, when in Ibiza? Yeah, I know. Like, she is the poster girl for, like, an amazing vacation in Ibiza. She took all of her friends. She took an incredible wardrobe.
7:14She, you know, she took her ability to stand on a, do a handstand on a fucking phone. I'm sorry. Oops. That's really incredible. I don't know how she does that. I don't know either. But she's obviously in the best shape of her life. and having seen her on tour, being on tour and how much she has to, you know, how strong she has to be to get through it. She just, yeah. She's obviously letting off a lot of steam after a very well-deserved, like, long time on tour. So, yeah. So I think it's like the last of the summer wine for everyone. Just go and look at Tuolipas' life and get a shame. Dogs and Dua.
7:51But you know what else I loved? I loved, can you tell me about this whole thing about the Jell-O? because I loved that photo. Oh, that was a Chloe Mala special. That was so good. I was very inspired by Maha's banning artificial food dye, which, as Taylor would like me to emphasize, I am not pro-artificial food dye. I am just pro-Jello. There's a very dubious news bag for this, which is like there was one cycle about two, three weeks ago where it was like Maha's against artificial food dye. And this kicked off an entire, like, say goodbye to artificial food dye photo shoot led by our fearless leader, Chloe.
8:35Anyway, there's some very beautiful pictures, though. Tell us about that. I thought they were super fun. I feel like there is so much fun summer jewelry that people really are inspired to wear for a few months a year. There's so many fun hi-fi colored accessories right now that are in goofy shapes that are almost look like jellos. They're see-through. They look like candy. So we thought, let's put them with candy and in Jell-O. Although poor Daisy Shilis, our jewelry editor, was like, yeah, that's super fun. They can't go in the Jell-O. Right. Right. There are limits. I was like, are you sure?
9:13So there were only certain brands that were allowed to be submerged in Jell-O. Also, a really good point that Daisy made was I forgot that when you're making Jell-O, the water is boiling. Yes. So you're pouring boiling water on meltable plastic. So some concessions had to be made. But yes, we were very excited about that. And Brandon David Geating did a great job photographing it. Elise did a very funny story. Olivia found two great food stylists. And yeah, eye candy are real candy. And as Elise said, take one final jello shot for artificial dyes. Dyson will be with us until something like until something like 2028 by the way at the earliest
10:03Topshop relaunched here oh yeah how was that I don't know what that means Choma like the store opened again no so basically Topshop what is the US equivalent to Topshop I guess there isn't one but everyone in most most kind of fashion lovers in the in the u.s are familiar with the high street staple that was top shop you know kate moss did uh collaborations with them they had many collaborations they were kind of beloved um and they were top shop in soho was major it was major yeah it was major i've definitely spent many hours there and i grew up near the flagship in london which was uh in oxford circus anyway long story short thing you ever bought a top shot chema i remember distinctly I don't remember exactly what, but I remember going to my first rave when I was underage and buying like a cropped.
10:56Say more. Yeah, I know. Like a utility skirt that was definitely knockoff Prada and a cropped long sleeved. It was very white, OK? A cropped long sleeved Adidas crop top. Oh, perfect. With V-neck. It was very cute, actually. It was a killer outfit. Yeah, that's what I remember. So I have very fond memories. I spent many a Saturday there. And so they've recently relaunched. I didn't really know that it was happening until quite recently. And they had this massive show in Trafalgar Square. And all kind of the kind of big, cool British girls were there. Cara Delevingne, Adria Boa. So it was really well attended.
11:42But yeah, I think the jury's still out as to whether the clothes themselves stand up. We'll have to see. But yeah, that was some big fashion news that happened this week. I mean, Top Top was such an insanely pivotal moment, I feel like, at the moment. I feel like it was before the ascendancy of H &M. It was before Zara took hold. It was very much the first High Street brand that felt really exciting. shop at. I remember going to London with my mom when I was like 16 and I was like, we have one thing we have to do. She was like, I'm not going there with you. But I went and I bought a striped button down that in retrospect is such a weird thing for a 16 year old to get.
12:26Like I truly look like Gordon Gekko. But not you, though. This is very on brand for Chloe Ma. I bought a Gordon Gekko shirt that I still own. Amazing. Oh my gosh. I had the most amazing Kate Moss slip dress from there with some like lace insets i loved it i mean she did amazing collabs for them i i mean there were so many great british designers that did collabs with them too um but i just think it's hard to revive something that has that lives in people's minds in the same way right and and also this new generation has none of that memory muscle memory around the brand they're shopping at different places they're shopping at Vinted or on eBay as well.
13:08They just have different shopping habits now. So it'll be interesting to see how it kind of all plays out. But yeah, we all have very fond memories. I can't imagine now wanting to go and revisit that because I think it just has to stay there in my memory as a certain time. But, you know, maybe a new generation of shoppers will be into it. But I just think it's a crowded market. Like you said, there's so many more options. And how do you navigate that? We'll be back in a moment.
13:54You come to the New Yorker Radio Hour for conversations that go deeper with people you really want to hear from, whether it's Bruce Springsteen or Questlove or Olivia Rodrigo, Liz Cheney, or the godfather of artificial intelligence, Jeffrey Hinton, or some of my extraordinarily well-informed colleagues at The New Yorker. So join us every week on The New Yorker Radio Hour, wherever you listen to podcasts.
14:23So let's get into our full fashion and culture preview. There's so much to discuss. Leah, I mean, I know you're the resident sports girl. I'm very excited for the U.S. Open, particularly about Venus Williams, who we were talking about the other day, because she is, you know, much older than most of the competition at the U.S. Open. And she'll be playing mixed doubles and is very excited because she's never won that and would like to. There's also going to be a U.S. Open dating show on YouTube. We have questions. Yes. I believe it's U.S. Open fans looking for love, tennis fans looking for love among each other.
15:07So that will be very fun. I'm tuning in immediately. Yes, of course, we will be on Tennis Wag Watch. I personally love Trinity Rodman. I think she's very fab. Also accomplished athlete, very accomplished athlete in her own right. She's not just a wag. No. Far from it. Wait, who is she with? Ben Shelton. Okay. Yeah. They're a sports power couple trauma. Yes. Oh, okay. Speaking of the Williams sisters, Margot Mbuba, our fearless wellness leader, has exciting news breaking on Thursday morning, this morning, which is that Serena Williams has been on a journey on GLP1s and has been talking about how helpful that has been for her postpartum recovery and to be staying in shape and healthy.
15:54I've been seeing so much chatter online who have been policing her body, which has been really upsetting, commenting on her weight loss and her weight loss journey. And I think it's really brave that she should speak out because it's like, people need to like, this is her body. She gets to do what she wants, like honestly. crazy very yeah absolutely and she talked about so she talked about that she talked about how she's i mean basically her whole life since she was a teen um had people talk about her body what she looks like and i think with this story um she's really speaking about the fact that you can be a world-class athlete you can like be in the gym and have access to you know great food and great chefs and it could still be really difficult for you to maintain a weight that you feel good at.
16:44And so in her case, she decided to get on a GLP-1 and she said that, you know, she'd been working hard, she'd been eating well, but she just was not, was not in a weight that she felt comfortable at. And the GLP-1 has been helpful in getting her there. And she still maintains like a very active lifestyle and she also spoke about wanting to share this because she has daughters and she thinks that that transparency is is very important this is a big story people are gonna this is gonna get picked up this is gonna get picked up it's all like my feed is full of people commenting on Serena's new body or whatever like right I think so few people to do they really do but they just honestly are obsessed with her body.
17:29It is unbelievable. It is really disgusting, actually. They won't leave her alone. Whatever size she is or whatever she's doing with her body, it is always open for comment. Everybody seems to have an opinion. It is wild. And it is true of so many black women's bodies. It's crazy. Leah, tell us about the WNBA finals. What are we excited about? Okay, so the Minnesota Lynx are doing really, really, really well. So we're likely going to see them in the finals. They have now beat the Liberty three times, and the Liberty beat them last year to win the championship. So big rivalry. I think that's who really everyone is looking towards.
18:11I think we're still not sure if the fever are going to make it. Kaitlin Clark has been out with an injury. So we'll see how they do over these next few weeks. The finals kick off September 14th. And if it's anything like this past WNBA All-Star weekend, which was really just exciting and fun and garnered a lot of attention for these women, there's so many big personalities in the league. It should be exciting. I have to say, it's been so much fun to watch collective excitement around the WNBA, both in our office and externally. I feel like also so many of my friends with young girls are going and it's just it's it's been a very fun thing to watch over the last two years.
19:01It's also football season. So, Leah, what are you excited about in the NFL this year? I know you're an avid follower of the NFL. I am. All right. Well, Russell Wilson is now a giant. So excited that him and Sierra are in New York. She actually performed. She actually, like, showed up at, like, a Brooklyn, like, party, like a Brooklyn, like, block party at Habana Outpost a few weeks ago and just, like, started performing, which was a fun surprise. So excited about that. We are friends of Joe Burrow and Vogue, so can't wait to see him, what he shows up wearing. Also excited about Jalen Hurts and the Eagles.
19:43I mean, there's talk that they could run it back and do another, win another Super Bowl. So that'll be really exciting. And our friends, I mean, this is going to be at the end of the season, but our friends at GQ are doing another GQ Bowl. So there'll be lots of parties, lots of fashion, lots of celebs. Something else I'm really excited about. So 12 teams now have male cheerleaders in the NFL. Yes. Oh, my God. I've never heard of them. We're very into that. And we are very, we're especially into, you know, some of the Vikings cheerleaders have been getting some online vitriol and they are remaining fabulous and twirling in everyone's face.
20:26And I cannot wait to see them. Hopefully doing a get ready with me for Vogue. Yes. Fingers crossed. I love, there's one that has like Farrah Fawcett hair. Yes. And I love them. On Farrah Fawcett hair. He looks great. Hi, I'm Rebecca Ford. senior awards correspondent at Vanity Fair and co-host of Little Gold Men. Oscar season is upon us. Little Gold Men takes you behind the scenes of the race for the biggest prize in Hollywood. There's a hundred wrestlers in the room, but only one can be Oscar nominated. Whether you're a movie lover or an industry buff, Little Gold Men from Vanity Fair has everything you need to know about this year's Oscar race.
21:07Follow and listen to Little Gold Men wherever you get your podcasts.
21:14I have to say a big fall preview that has been, or a fall anticipation that has been rocking the Vogue offices. Life of a Showgirl is Taylor Swift's new album, which drops on October 3rd. Sam Sussman, Irene Kim, and I were already discussing how we're going to integrate that into the Paris fashion schedule because it's going to be dropping at 6 a.m. in Paris. And we were like, should we be going to people's doors at the Regina? And getting their take on it before the Chanel show. But she is wearing this bejeweled showgirl outfit on the cover of the album that she released. And many of us assumed that she was wearing Aria.
21:58But in fact, Leah, do you want to tell us what it is? In fact, she is wearing vintage Bob Mackie. Which Lila Ramsey uncovered. Very on brand. Very, very, very, very on brand. I'm surprised she pipped Margot to the post on that. I know it's true. So that's exciting. I like that the list that Taylor shared about his fall TV was titled TV Chloe will hate. Chloe and I do not share. Well, no, that's true. We overlap with British crime. Right. We overlap with our northern Irish crime. Fixation on obscure Brit box shows, which we can get to. But no, there is usually a whole set of shows, typically guilty pleasure shows that I get excited about, that Chloe has zero time for.
22:44So I assembled three of them here for you. Okay. So I'm really excited about this show called Monster of Florence coming out in October from Netflix. And the reason is— Also known as Doge Parker versus Florence. I saw this and I was like, more about Florence? We're talking about Florence, Italy, people. and the director at least of the first episode is Stefano Salina who is one of my favorite Italian action directors and he you may have seen Chloe I'm sure you saw Sicario 2, Day of the Soldado and the Italian series Sabura I'm sure you're well up on that anyway I'm really excited about this show it's a serial killer drama set in Florence, Italy in the 70s and 80s in Italian oh yes subtitles only please my other guilty pleasure was Did any of you watch Landman?
23:34Did any three of you watch Landman? No, but I feel like my mom did. This was such a show I was not supposed to like, and I completely got swept away by it's set in the excess oil fields, stars Billy Bob Thornton, and a whole host of other people. But Billy Bob Thornton is a lord, and this show is so good. It was a huge hit for Paramount, and it's coming back in November. And then really going to the bottom of the guilty pleasure barrel, I really liked Fallout, which was this trashy show on Prime last year. and it's coming back, which I'm very excited about in October. I haven't seen any of these.
24:08To try to get your attention, it's The Return of Walton Gawkins. Oh, I do love Walton. There you go. There you go. It's like an ultra gory science fiction dystopian drama based on a video game. So how's that sound? Okay, speaking of a pivot, I do just want to briefly digress from what we're looking forward to, to Leah and Choma, did you watch the finale of In Just Like That? Of course I did. What do you mean? I don't know. I'm not there yet. What? What do you mean? When will you get there, Chloe? I don't know. I don't know if I'm ready for Carrie to be gone. I also, you know, I just haven't quite committed to the end of Carrie Bratchel in my life.
24:48She's really seen my entire, like, late adolescence to adulthood. It's very odd not to have her in my life. I know. There are too many Agatha Christie episodes for you to watch. That's right. I'm fine. Are you too tender to talk about her last month? You haven't finished Matlock yet? They're bringing Matlock back. Oh, no, they brought it back. That's what I'm saying. Chloe, and Leah, I know you watched this, so this doesn't really apply. But I know you've seen her final outfit that she wore. What did you make of it, Chloe? You've seen it. Oh, I saw it because Christian Allaire had an exclusive preview.
25:27Exactly. Exactly. What did you make of the final outfit? Too, too much. Too, too much.
25:36For moi. Oh, my God. Perfect. I love the skirt. I love the shoes. I thought it was a bit too much fuchsia. Also the hat. I mean, you know what? But Carrie can do no wrong and it's fine. You know, we have so many outfits to be thankful for that she's given us over the years. This is true. The British Vogue team did like a whole thing on all of her outfits. And it was like really, I felt sad reading it. I was just like, I can't believe it's over. I know, it's very emotional. Film, what's going to be emotional this fall, Taylor? Well, I don't know. I mean, there's so much coming and some of it is embargo.
26:20Some of it I get to see some things early. And I just have to say, everyone's already excited about Paul Muskell, but this guy has an incredible fall coming. I mean, he's in The History of Sound, which I absolutely loved, which is coming out on September 12th. Oh, good. I'm seeing it on a Tuesday. Yeah. It's a slow movie, but it's like a really, really beautiful one. It also stars Josh O 'Connor, who himself has like a string of really great roles this fall. It grits. Paul Muskell also is in Hamnet, which is a Chloe Zhao-directed adaptation of the celebrated novel with Jesse Buckley. It's coming out November 27th, and it really knocked my socks off.
26:58I mean, this is an incredible set of performances and a really powerful, beautiful movie. Oh, I'm excited about Hamnet. I am obsessed with Jesse Buckley as is Taylor. Me too. Me too. Oh, you know what else I'm excited about? There's two Linklater. A double Linklater. There are two Linklater movies. There's Blue Moon with Ethan Hawke and Nouvelle Vague, which is his sort of tribute. That's what I'm excited about. Tribute to Godard and Black and White. It's about the making of Breathless. Yeah, exactly. Oh, wow. Wait, but is Nouvelle Vague in Black and White? Yes. Oh, wow. Interesting. Okay. There are a couple of movies that are coming out really soon that I think are— Film Forum should replay Breathless this month.
Read the full transcript
27:37Yeah, that'll be— Metrograph or Film Forum should be replaying Breathless ahead of Nouvelle Vague. Yeah, that always packs them in. No, I'm serious. Sorry, that sounds sarcastic. Saying that without any irony? Taylor was so mean to me last night. I was going to see the Polanski-Dreyfus affair film at Film Forum, which came out in France five years ago. And I've been waiting to see it. And he goes, that's one of the two movies you see a year. I was like, I don't need this negativity in my life. She sleeps through Oppenheimer. Well, it's long, quite long. Yeah, totally. Totally. I love this highbrow film talk but to circle back to television I believe Emily in Paris will be coming back we've been seeing the on set costumes I personally am excited for that is that season 3?
28:264? is it 4 or 5? I've watched them all isn't it now Emily in Rome? she was in Rome I don't know where Emily is going to be when we see her again. The expanded Emily universe. Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Emily in Paris edition. Yeah, never watch an episode of that show. That feels right. You're missing out. You're missing out. Taylor's like, Lioness or bust. Oh, totally. When they announced the date of Lioness season three, I mean, that's a stay home from work day. Chloe, are you going to be watching the fifth season of Slow Horses? Yes. Yes. That's a big one in your household, right?
29:06As the kids say, I am seated. Graham Lloyd and I love slow horses we love Jack Loudon we love Jack Loudon he's going to be a soon to be dad he's also Mr. Darcy the first paparazzi photos of him being fitted as Mr. Darcy have leaked I will say I keep thinking about Emma's post that she wrote about how paparazzi onset paparazzi photos are ruining movies for us oh it's so annoying it's so frustrating and I only I didn't care with Devil Wears Prada I didn't care with with Emily in Paris or Sex and the City. But when they come for Pride and Prejudice, they better back off. How dare they? A cease and desist is coming their way.
29:48I'm also a big Abbott Elementary fan. In my former life, before I was a fashion editor, I was a high school English teacher at a public school. Wow. In Texas. In Houston, Texas. And I must say, the accuracy of that show is just astounding. I've always meant to watch that show and never got around to it. But people really like it. My in-laws love Abaddon. Well, they're both teachers, so that makes sense. It's hilarious. The archetypes are spot on. Yeah. Chloe, did you ever watch Karen Peary on BritBox? No. Okay, 1980s set, Scotland, female DI, sort of dealing with a very male-dominated police force.
30:26It's fantastic. I really liked it. And the second season, it's a big hit in the UK. Second season is coming on your favorite streaming service, BritBox, in October. work. So that one is worth checking out. And the actress is named Lauren Lyle, who's like, awesome. She's great. So that's a big recommendation for me. Taylor, you mentioned that you liked A Preparation for the Next Life. Oh, yeah. This is a small movie which is coming out in a couple of weeks on September 3rd. And it's based on an Atticus Lish novel, his first novel, that was a thing when it came out maybe, you know, more than a decade ago.
30:58And I couldn't believe it had been made into a movie. And And indeed, it's made by the director, Bing Liu, whose first film was like an incredibly moving documentary that you can watch on Hulu called Minding the Gap about skateboarders and his sort of like, you know, coming of age, this collection of skateboarders sort of coming of age. And so anyway, this is Bing Liu's first fiction film, and it's based on this incredibly great novel. And it's really good. I saw it the other day, and I really encourage people to seek it out. It’s hard to accept the fact that summer is winding down. But there’s lots of fall culture to look forward to! Our editors sat down to talk about the films, television and sports events they’re most excited about, including The Monster of Venice, Preparation for the Next Life and, of course, the WNBA finals.
Here at Vogue, it’s been the Dogue days of summer. After last year’s inaugural Dogue launch, we were inundated with messages from readers asking how their own dog could snag a Dogue cover. So this year we conducted a Dogue cover contest. More than 56,000 (!!) people submitted photos of their dogs, but only one could win! Plus, fashion writer Hannah Jackson takes you behind the scenes with The Dogist for our “Adopt This Dogue!” photo shoot.
The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. Hosted by Chloe Malle, Head of Editorial Content, Vogue U.S.; Chioma Nnadi, Head of British Vogue; and Nicole Phelps, Director of Vogue Runway, each episode features the latest fashion news and exclusive designer and celebrity interviews.
