2:29Good morning, everyone. We are at the Condé Nast podcast studios bright and early morning after the 98th Academy Awards. Welcome Christian Allaire, Taylor Antrim, Chomanati, our morning after award season crew, night owls and early birds. Early birds. Good morning. Good morning. How late were you up, Chloe? 12.30. Yeah. Sounds right. After party at 222. Yeah. Lloyd was raging. This morning, we are joined by our colleagues, Taylor Andrew and Christian Allaire, who I already just welcomed. Yes. We're still very happy to be here. Happy to be here. Yeah. Yeah, we're excited about the Oscars, right?
3:15We are. We are. We're also excited for a climactic crescendo end to awards season. Okay. Are you going to correct my use of crescendo? Yeah. I'm like, that's future tense? So what's still to happen? Well, I think of the Met as like something coming. Oh, in May. Okay, I'm just fixing because I used crescendo wrong. But this was a very exciting awards show, I thought. All season long, we've been waiting for this big moment. We've been obviously robustly covering each and every awards show. There seemed to be more every season. But first, Choma, I have to say it is my favorite litmus test to check in with you since you were sleeping peacefully when this was all going down and hear what made it through to you this morning.
4:06What were the highlights on the other side of the pond? Well, I think everybody's been thinking about this Oscar race between Sinners and Whambuttal After Another. And I think Michael B. Jordan winning really came through my feed really strongly. I also feel that Jessie Buckley from all angles, from the fashion perspective of the moment she hit the red carpet, that beautiful, romantic, ethereal Chanel dress that she wore was just perfect and just fit for an Oscar winner. And then her beautiful speech and talking about the chaos that exists inside a mother's heart, I thought it was really moving and gorgeous.
4:47And I hope, Chloe, that resonated with you because I thought it was beautiful. chaos exists for me in all areas just exuding chaos it looked like a really fun night it looked like a fun exciting awards show I mean I could go on about best dressed but we'll get into that a little bit later I'm sort of curious best dressed Choma yeah who was your best dressed from the night there were so so many beautifully dressed people there for me it had to be Wumi Musaku. I think she just looked incredible in Vuitton. I think it's so difficult to dress when you're expecting because your body is changing so rapidly.
5:28I imagine that she's probably changed size over the course of this award season. So shout out to all the tailors who've had to readjust these dresses as she's going along. I love that, Shoma. Shout out to the tailors. Yeah, she hasn't had a misstep yet. And I thought that beautiful green, emerald green, sparkling Vuitton dress was just perfection. I also thought Renate Rinsve looked amazing in that very simple Louis Vuitton column that had a long slit up to her thigh on the side, but was just incredibly elegant. And she was all in red, red lip, red shoe, red dress. She looked stunning. Oh, my favorite of the season, Odessa Zion in Valentino.
6:10Oh my God, she is the best. She just does what she wants. Yeah, she shows up as herself. And I think that very few actors get that kind of license, creative license to just be themselves. And she looked incredible in this. I don't know whether it was pants or it was a robe, but it was an embroidered black velvet look from Valentino that just looked stunning. And she just looked so comfortable and cool. and then she wore this quite insane Harris Reed number to the Vanity Fair after party. It looked incredible. She was corseted with these very high, I don't know what to call them, like exaggerated epaulettes because they were literally like wings.
6:53They looked like parts of a spaceship. They looked like parts of a spaceship. If I were her, I would have done the inverse. I would have been comfortable at the after party. No, no, no, no. Okay, all right. I think the after party, you can go wild. You can go crazy. You want to show up because, I mean, it must be so intimidating going to the Oscars for the first time as a new actor. Don't you think? I'd want to be absolutely comfortable. And then you can let your hair down and let your inner freak flag fly at the after party. So I thought she made the right choice in dressing that way. But, yeah, those are some of the standouts for me.
7:29But how about you guys? Well, we started a new best dress rubric or awards rubric that we all sort of workshopped together called the Vogue Awards. And we they're really fun. We have the Gwyneth Paltrow Award for leading lady, which goes to sort of the ingenue who's about to win an award, which Jesse Buckley really nailed that. I thought she looked amazing in her Chanel. we had the Cher Award for Best Showgirl Moment which for us went to Demi Moore in her feathered incredible Gucci dress which I absolutely love Feathers Christian were a big trend now Huge trend Who else were there? Nicole Kidman Moore Feathers Tiana Both Nicole and Tiana in Chanel Tiana's Feathered was the best one I have to say the most most innovative use of feathers gorgeous and effortless Amy Madigan Oh, and Amy Madigan was avian-like.
8:21Yes. She won the best suit, in my opinion. She looked fab. I'm surprised there weren't more suits last night. I know. I thought so, too. She was one of the few. We also have the Angelina Jolie Award for best slit, which Renata won in spades. So that was very exciting. Gwyneth Paltrow also had a huge high slit. Oh, yeah. She had a crazy slit, but it was a secret slit. Yes. That was cool. What was that, Armani? That was Armani, yep. When was the famous Angelina Jolie high slit? When was that? What year was that? I was Versace. And I want to say 2012. I remember that moment. That was just, it broke the internet.
8:58And ever since then, I think we've just been calling it the Angelina Jolie Slit. I know, it's amazing. But Christian, who else were your best dressed of the night? I loved a lot of the men. I loved Pedro Pascal's Chanel. I think men often just wear... Oh, I know, with that beautiful flower. Yeah, they just wear like a blazer 99 % of the time. It was fun to see someone throw out the blazer, wear just a shirt, but a huge fabulous brooch. It was fab. Just shirt. So fab. And those sexy little glasses. Ugh, love. Joe Alwyn, too, in Valentino, his little loose bow tie. It was these little details. There's a lot of floppy bows.
9:32A lot of floppy bows. Jesse Buckley, for me, is also my fave best dressed. I feel like there's never enough color on the red carpet. Like, people are really afraid of color these days. It reminded me of that Lupita moment. I think that was like an appropriate dress to wear for someone who's going to win the Oscar. For me, it's like a Disney princess, but make it fashion. It was exactly like that. I don't think we've seen a moment like that since Lupita's blue Prada dress. Loved. I also loved Elle Fanning and Givenchy by Sarah Burton. It was very Grace Kelly, the white strapless full skirt. And she wore a necklace from 1904, which I thought was fab.
10:11We love an archival. Yep. So fab. Speaking of accessories, I loved Jacob Elordi's jazz shoes. It was a little botega. It was kind of like, I'm going to do whatever I want. I also loved the K-pop Demon Hunter girls in their coordinated gold dresses. Dior, Tom Brown. And they looked fabulous. I loved their performance, obviously. Blessedly, my children were already asleep, but it would have been a big moment. Were you pleased that the world had finally caught up with your enthusiasm for K-pop? Yes! Trust me, the world caught up. That was my joke. I loved EJ's speech, though, and how she was saying how she used to be made fun of for loving K-pop, and now she won an Oscar for it.
10:52I thought that was cool. Little did she know, she was gobbling up all the time allotted for her speech. And the minute she passed the mic, they were like, lights down, music up. It was not a great night for being played off. Christian, tell us about all of your favorite jewels, because they were big jewelry moments. Oh, my God. There were so many diamonds last night. I was like aghast, but also pleased. Clutching your pearls? Clutching my pearls. My favorite was Kate Hudson. She wore garotti, which I'm not too familiar with, but she wore over$35 million worth of diamonds. What? Yeah, but they were rare green diamonds.
11:28Now Taylor's interested. Very rare green diamonds, I guess. Did you say$35 million worth? Over$35 million, yes. I'd be curious on the logistics of guards at the Oscars. Me too. Were they under the table? Yes. They're close by. I think they all have a date. So they just sort of like... Linger around. And they're incognito in the audience. Yeah. Wow. What do they wear? They're like feet away. That's a Vogue business article. What do they wear? Yeah. Who dressed the guards? Yes! Do you have to rent a tuxedo if you're a$35 million diamond guard? Probably. One imagines Cartier gets you a tuxedo. Oh, good point.
12:03Good point. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. All right. It's in their rider. It's in their rider. We need to do a get ready with me with one of the guards. That's what it's called. Literally. Oh, my God, what a missed opportunity. All right, doing it right now. 2027 is all ready to go. Love. But I feel like for the past few award seasons, like, people haven't been wearing, like, hefty diamonds. It's been very simple on the jewelry side, I feel. And this Oscars, like, everyone was wearing a huge diamond necklace. Like, I think of Anne Hathaway in Bulgari, Priyanka Chopra Jonas in Bulgari. These were huge.
12:32My favorite, Rose Byrne, was wearing a taffin cognac-colored diamond. Yes. She looked great. A little more subdued, that diamond. I love Rose. She looked so fab, friend of the pod. Friend of the pod, yeah, exactly. My favorite jury of the night was Javier Bardem, who rewore his No To War badge that he wore in 2003. I love that he did that. Oh, I didn't know it was his badge in 2003. Yeah, yeah. Christian, I also loved your piece on all the costume designers who a lot of them made their own outfits for the Oscars, and that felt like a nice off-piste from everyone who has very elaborate deals with big brands.
13:09Yes, I'm going to butcher this name. Malgosia Terzanska. Did I say that right? Wow. You're asking the wrong people. You guys know that. Well, the fabulous hamnet costume designer. Oh, who won? Yes, who won. Sort of spent the whole weekend safety pinning her own dress. And I thought that was fab. Like just, she had a vision, she executed it. And yes, you're right. Like in a time where people can easily get things from designers, I think it's really fab that she took the time, executed her vision, and went for it. I mean, also speaking of the business of dressing for Oscars, Vogue Business did a really good deep dive on all the business of brand ambassadorships and the different it was I thought it was really interesting.
13:50Maddie Schultz wrote it on the different tiers of ambassadorship. It's like ambassador, face of, friend of the house, and they each have different qualifications and obligations attached to them. I posted it on my Instagram and a friend who's a writer wrote back, she goes, this article was my Pentagon Papers.
14:13Christian, any favorite vintage moments? Yes. Another costume designer actually, Miyako Bellizzi wore Dior Galliano from Spring 99. I thought that was fab. Miyako's so cool. She's been around for a long time in New York. She was the costume designer for Marty Supreme, and she just looked fab. I loved her, like, goth glam. I think she's, like, the breakout award season star. She just always looks fab on the red carpet and has interesting choices as far as designers and who she wore. I love that she wore—I think at one point she wore one of the Versace looks from Dario's collection. Mmm, taste. Yes.
14:53I love a woman with taste. Yes, she has it in spades. There really wasn't that much vintage last night, actually. Like aside from Al Fanning and like her archival necklace, like even jewelry, there wasn't a lot of vintage either. I was surprised. Oh, but let's talk about Kylie, not vintage, but wearing her Schiaparelli keyhole dress in Jessica Rabbit red. But then it was a rewear-ish of she wore the pink version a few years ago. I guess it's like the version of getting the same look in every color because Timothy did the same thing. Timothy has been wearing the same suit. It just had it done in a million different colors.
15:29Yes. Didn't work. Poor Timmy. Ouch. Poor Timmy. I mean. He'll get his at some point. But the ballet gate was after the voting enclosures. That was a big moment for, we put that to AI last night because I was like, how am I going to get an answer to this? I was like, hey, Claude, were Timothy's ballet comments before or after the voting enclosures? And there was an answer right there for me. Oh, wow. It was after. Even still. There's life with Claude. I like to call it Claude around the house. Speaking of ballet, I loved Lila's story on Misty Copeland's wearing a costume. Oh, I know. The original Firebird costume.
16:11It was gorgeous. That was amazing. That performance was, I think, my favorite of the night. Liam was so excited. He was slacking me. Liam, who works in the London office, he was like, the Oscars are two hours earlier than usual here in the UK. He said two because of daylight savings. So starting at 11 a.m. instead of 1 a.m., 11 p.m. instead of 1 a.m. So, Jomi, you have no excuse. You're still awake at 11 p.m. I'm willing to bet. I wasn't asleep. That's a good girl. That's what you need. That's what you need.
16:47The Run-Thru will be back in just a moment. The happy chaos of the Run-Thru. The chaos of the Run-Thru's heart.
17:04This week on Critics at Large, we're talking about Love Story, the new Ryan Murphy show about the 90s id couple, JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bissett. I think the show has a very ambivalent relationship to its own participation in the continued paparazzi spectacle around these two people. That's a great point. I think it holds it close and it also pushes it away, and it tries to give you both that paparazzi, slavering, panting, let's get close, let's get the outfits, let's take you inside their famous fight. And to raise an eyebrow at that at the same time and say, but of course, we're fiction. And we ask if our hunger for all things Kennedy will ever end.
17:45I'm Nomi Fry. Join me and my co-hosts on Critics At Large from The New Yorker. Find us every Thursday, wherever you get your podcasts. Okay guys, it's finally spring. I'm so excited. I've been wearing my Penny Lane coat all winter and while I do love it, I am so ready to be wearing layers and more fun outfits this season. I think Macy's is the perfect place to find all of my spring wardrobe essentials. They have great brands from Steve Madden and BCBG where I could probably find some of those fun sheer layers I'm looking for. And I've really been into loose fitting jeans, so I'm going to definitely take a look at what Macy's has in store there too.
18:31I know a lot of people are into barrel cut. I'm more into a relaxed fit jean, so I definitely will check that out at Macy's. I'm so ready to make the switch to spring and so glad that Macy's is here for it.
18:51And we're back. Now, Choma, we have divided opinions on Conan O 'Brien. I thought he was charming as ever. He can do no wrong in my book. I thought his intro dressed as Amy Madigan's character from Weapons was fantastic. Oh, I, you know, I'm in the bag for Conan O 'Brien. I love Conan O 'Brien. So I was very excited. And I thought he killed it last year. And I'm sure he, I mean, there was a joke about how he's going to be Oscar's, you know, presenter for life at the end. No, I thought his jokes were sort of fine. You know, I was like when the bridesmaids bit came up and I was like genuinely laughing, I thought, OK, well, this is this is funny.
19:28And I felt like there hadn't been enough quite sort of like real ha ha moments. Yeah, it was a guffaw light evening for me. It was, you know, it felt like the world is so complicated and the industry is so complicated that people were sort of like a little bit careful maybe with the humor. Like the thing about hamnet sounding like lunch meat, I was like, I'm not sure this is funny. Oh, God. I thought about that. Yeah. OK. See? I liked his Timmy Oprigate joke. I feel like he could have been really mean about that. But it was like just a bit of a roast, but not too much. Like I thought he handled it well.
20:02I feel like Timmy was like on beta bloggers. He was just so sanguine when he made that joke. It was like he'd been prepping for that all day long. Oh, see, I thought the laughter, the forced laughter coming out of Timmy and Kylie was just like rage laughter. It's like we are ready to do this and laugh and have smiles on our face, but we are not. We are dead inside right now. I can't wait for the lip reading, like the breakdown. What people are saying, what they're actually saying at the tables. Well, people were saying last night that the whole crowd in general seemed like they were on beta blockers.
20:36Like, all the celebrities seemed nervous. I don't know if you guys caught that, but I felt like they were in the crowd. Like, they were almost afraid to laugh at jokes. It was bizarre, I found. These things are such big business and so important for the personal branding campaigns of these celebrities that it's hard to imagine anyone even having a drink, you know? Like, when Paul Thomas Anderson was like, let's have a martini, I thought, like, you have not had one to this point for sure. And you are genuinely looking forward to all of this being over so you can relax. But good job for Paul Thomas Anderson.
21:06You love PTA. Well, I do. I do. And I was like, I thought it was a nice moment for someone who's like been in the business for so long and has had so many movies nominated. I was surprised it was his first Oscar. And getting one finally. No, I know. I agree. It was exciting. at what obviously for those who aren't following Taylor's quick patter one battle after another was the triumphant best picture winner at the end of the night first and last time Chloe ever remarks on me having quick patter quick patter the big moment Choma we haven't talked about the big moment of the night yet I didn't find out about until Sunday morning of course she didn't I She did a great job.
21:49She did a great job. We all know what we're talking about here. Anna Wintour presented Best Costume Designer with Anne Hathaway. And we were all so proud of her. We thought she did great. I thought she was very funny. Anna's very good at being in on the joke. Yes. Yes. She's funny. Anna's funny. And she was genuinely on trend in black and white Dior skirt suit that was amazing. I thought there was so much black and white on the red carpet. Yeah. And a lot of Dior. Yeah. Tell our listening audience what she did. So she came out with Anne Hathaway. She came out with Anne Hathaway to present the award for Best Costume Designer.
22:25No sunglasses on. That was part of the gag. No sunglasses on, which I sort of gasped at that. I mean, nobody wears sunglasses on the Oscar stage. So you gasping, it's like, oh, my gosh, she's breaking protocol. It's like nighttime indoors. But anyway, go on. And she and Anne had a very cute repartee where Anne asked her if she liked her dress and then Anna slipped the sunglasses on and said no comment. But then Anna had to read very long names that I was impressed with her. She workshopped those. She's a good student. It was a very well-received bit. And then they went off stage and then you saw the camera pan to them backstage and it's Anna and Anne laughing.
23:13and then between them is Anna's assistant Emily. And Emily looked fantastic, but it was a perfect Devil Wears Prada meta moment. Oh my goodness. The real Emily between Anne Hathaway and Anna. And Emily looked fabulous, so I'm really happy for her. Send me that. I missed that bit. I didn't see that picture. I posted it last night. I was so excited. I'm checking your stories right now. Other favorite presenters? And Bridesmaids mentioned them. They were great. You know, I was – it was funny. There was Jesse Buckley's wonderful speech that Joma already mentioned and was great. And I guess my stream was on a lag or whatever.
23:56So I was following along with the staff Slack channel. And our beloved Marlee Marius was like, I am so uncomfortable. She was writing it. I was like, I'm such a cynic, so dead at heart. The earnestness of Jesse Buckley, who we love. I was like, same Marlee. But actually what she was referring to was Cole Kidman and Ewan McGregor coming out for some kind of like low-key Moulin Rouge reunion. 25 years. But they started sort of kind of singing, but not really singing. Didn't commit to it. And it was so awkward. Yes. And Marley was just squirming. Totally, totally, totally. Ewan McGregor looks great, though.
24:31I'd forgotten about him. I was like, what a man he is. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson was very exciting. Zendaya was, you know, in her full bridal moment because the drama is about getting married and she just got married. And she joined as part of promo for the drama a real couple who got married in Las Vegas. And that was a really fun article that Anna Cofolla did this weekend. That was such good marketing. I know. I'm annoyed at this trend that stars skipping the carpet, though. Both Zendaya and Robert Pattinson skipped carpet. Doesn't make Christian Chauvin easier. Just give us a moment. Come on now.
Read the full transcript
25:04Don't save it for the ceremony. Yeah, who else skipped? But someone else, oh, Vittoria with Leo. Kylie Jenner always skips the carpet. She always does. The wags. Those sneaky wags. Taylor, what were the big upsets? Well, I think I was looking for drama going into the night. And partly the problem is that the Oscars are so late in the season. It's the last one. Here we are in the middle of March. And you've had all these award shows running up to it. So it has been a good season. There are good movies. There were sort of like races that had some drama to them. But I just didn't feel it going in because I felt like we'd talked this thing to death.
25:39Did you have any strong predictions? Well, I thought Sinners was going to have a big night. I thought the momentum behind Sinners was sort of undeniable. And, you know, I guess I was partly right. Like, Sinners didn't win Best Picture. But Michael B. Jordan winning Best Actor I thought was one of the biggest moments. He's so handsome. He's so lovely. It was a great moment. It was like, you know, someone who has real star power and that everybody loves. but also up against like two legitimately incredible performances or three I would say in Leo DiCaprio in One Battle of the Outfit or Another which I think that kind of shaggy humor that he you know perfected through that movie is really hard to pull off.
26:18Timothy in you know Marty Supreme that was like an incredible performance I thought carried that entire movie. I would shout out Ethan Hawke in Blue Moon which I thought was like a wonderful movie and that performance was really incredible. Link later for life. Link later for life, truly. That man keeps making movies. Two movies this year. Anyway, so that was a big moment and I think it was a surprise, a little bit of a surprise that Michael B. Jordan won, but not one that anyone was mad about. You know what I mean? But otherwise, the other one was probably best supporting actress, like Amy Madigan.
26:50Yeah, that was a surprise. I was jumping for joy. I haven't seen it. You've been a real proponent. I've been a real fan since the start. I just feel like women in horror never get their flowers. Totally. They give some great performances and Amy Madigan deserved it. You heard it here first. Women in horror never get their flowers. It's true. That movie was good too. So I'm surprised I didn't get best picture. I'm going to say it. Nomination. Not win, but like a nomination. And the little clip of her performance and I was like, I'm going to see that movie again. Yeah, she was fabulous. Like there's only really been like Natalie Portman Black Swan or Misery.
27:22Kathy Bates and Misery. Like they're really Oh, that got a shout out. Yeah, there hasn't been many women who've won for a horror performance. Chloe, what did you make of the Billy Crystal moment? Oh. I called Candace immediately. I was like, make sure you're watching. Anyway, I was like, turn it on. It was so moving. And to see everyone come out from Carrie Elwes. I thought that was great. Ugh. Yeah, that was really great. I, of course, started crying. Ugh. Yes. It felt like more people in memoriam this year than, it felt like a critical mass of in memoriam. Anyway, Billy Crystal came out and did a beautiful tribute to Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner and talked about the beginning of their friendship and how they became best friends for the rest of their lives.
28:05And it was so touching. And then when they put up stills from some of his most beloved films, about 15 stars from those films, from Demi Moore to... John Cusack. John Cusack to Meg Ryan, obviously Kathy Bates, Jerry O 'Connell. And then, oh, Billy Crystal said, what fun we had. I'm going to start crying again. But he – it was like he didn't need notes. It seemed like he was just speaking, you know, off the cuff. And he was dry-eyed, which I thought was, you know, a remarkable thing, but also welcome. You know, it was lovely just to hear kind of him – it felt like he was just like talking to you about a relationship that he had.
28:50And I, too, was sort of staggered by that array of incredible stars, none of whom spoke, but were all just on stage. And I thought that was like a show of force for the Oscars. And then there was Barbra Streisand. Very emotional now. Oh, my God. Babs. Babs on Robert Redford. Yeah. Barbra Streisand, very emotional Robert Redford tribute. Also totally authentic feeling. Yes. You know, both of those sort of in memoriam segments were really something to watch. You know what else it was a big night for? Husbands. Totally. Amy Madigan shouting out Ed Harris. Love. I thought that was lovely. Jesse Buckley, cold launching.
29:31What's his name? Freddie? That's not a word. It's hard launching. Oh, okay. Jesse Buckley, cold launching. I'm going to stick with it. Cold plunging. Jesse Buckley, hard launching Freddie from the stage. I was like, did he really come? It's amazing. I know. It's very exciting. And she said, I want to have a million more babies with you. I thought that was a lot to deal with. Yeah, it was every year someone talks about having more children with their partner. Oh, yeah. Kieran Culkin, Jesse Buckley. I'm like, wait till you have your second and you'll be done now. Another really wonderful feel-good moment of the night was Autumn Gerald Acapel was the first woman to win Best Cinematography.
30:13for our sinners. That is so crazy. She looked great. She was in a suit, right? Yeah, fun fact. I had coffee with Tom Brown last week and he was saying that she was one of the few people that he was dressing. And he was like, I just hope she wins. And lo and behold, she did. She manifested that. So happy for Tom. Yeah. And didn't Ryan Coogler like run and get her kid and run it down the aisle or something? What? Yeah, there was a moment where Ryan Coogler, Ryan Cooler was great last night. He was so charming. Him and his wife, they make me cry every time because they just have such an adorable relationship and he's so sweet and tender towards her.
30:55Yeah. I mean, I also love that so many people brought their mothers to the show. Including Goldie Hawn. Yeah, it was Mother's Day here yesterday, so it was quite nice. Michael B. Jordan has brought his mom throughout, which I thought was very sweet. And then his dad was like up in the rafters somewhere. I was so confused. This poor guy came from Ghana and they couldn't sit him in the orchestra. Are you kidding me? I have some questions too. Jesse Buckley said that Ireland flew her entire family. So is that the country of Ireland? I was confused by that. Is that taxpayer money in Ireland? I feel like it must be like Ryanair.
31:29That was the leap you made? Yeah, we have some follow-ups. There's some like Republic of Ireland royal funds that went to Jesse Buckley's family to make sure they were there. Anyway, good for Jesse, friend of the pot, as we've said. Don't begrudge her anything.
31:49The run-through will be back in a moment.
31:59In a time when the United States military is being sent into American cities, when civilians and soldiers are being pitted against each other, It's strange that we've never dressed more alike. We all wear performance clothes. We all wear outdoor clothes, whether or not we're outside, civilians and soldiers. I'm Avery Truffleman. I make a podcast about clothing called Articles of Interest. And in this new season, I trace the interwoven histories of the military and the outdoor industry and how they built each other. Find Articles of Interest wherever you get your podcasts. And the season is called Gear.
32:45Stellan Skarsgård. What a man. Happy to see him. He didn't win, unfortunately. Who won Best Supporting Actor? Oh, my gosh. Sean Penn, who didn't even come. Sean Penn, who doesn't come to the Oscars. I loved Kieran Culkin being like, Sean Penn chose not to be here. Yeah, exactly. You know, takes the award from Stellan Skarsgård, who looked great and then was the butt of, like, some very amusing jokes from the Bridesmaids girls who were like... Oh, what did they say? I missed it. There was like these handwritten notes from Stella and Skarsgård critiquing their, like, you know, plastic surgery. And saying, you look great for your age.
33:20And he had, like, a real laughter going on. It was not any, the kind of timid day, rage laughter. He seems like the most fun, delightful man. Like, all of his, I was listening to a long interview with him on NPR. Just his whole Nepo Daddy thing is so charming. Sentimental Value, for the record, my favorite movie of the year. And I didn't have any illusions that it was going to get Best Picture. Wonderful that it was nominated. But it did get Best International Feature. And Joachim Trier, I thought, had a really charming speech from the stage. And I was really happy to see that whole cast because I think it's a wonderful cast, you know.
33:51On the topic of Bridesmaids, though, like, can they please make a sequel? They got them all together for the Oscars. I'm like, what is the holdup for the sequel? Oh, my God. I'd watch that. I'd watch that. Need it now. It's surprising they haven't tried to make that happen. Soon, maybe. Any thoughts on the Vanity Fair after party best looks? Yeah. I have a hot take. I think people should wear short to the after party. That's a good shout. Like, I just think that when people show up to the VF after party in a whole new ball gown, it just doesn't make sense to me. Like, Olivia Rodrigo looks so adorable.
34:24She's in this, like, feathered mini dress with her hair casual, but she looks great. Like, that's sort of what it should be. Alyssa Liu went to the Vanity Fair after party, and Sam Sussman gave us a report that she, it was like her first major red carpet, and she just seemed totally shell-shocked. Hudson and Connor Story showed up in matching, nipple-revealing sheer shirts. Loved it. I'm sort of ready. Enough. No, never enough. Never enough. Two takes. Two men. Keep it coming. Oh, big deal. Sarah Pidgeon. Yeah, and Calvin. Finally wore Calvin. I thought that was beautiful very beautiful Emma Morrison former Vogette is styling Sarah and I think doing such a good job yeah just just talking about Sarah I almost feel like I wonder if Emma got intel about the backdrop because I loved how very much minimalist it was it was literally matched the step and repeat oh my god good call Choma that's a good stylist who's getting carpet color I think it's important to know because then I mean I doubt she did but it does make a difference to the picture and I thought actually Kim speaking of her hair I love that muzzed hair I do think it it really brought the look to life I thought that Gucci that sparkling skin tight dress was excellent actually on her she was one of my favorites I love the hair too people were not loving it online but I think it was something new for her yeah I thought it was great I just think not too perfect is the way to go I totally support your note about the short dressing I think that's really important And Olivia Rodrigo now has Mel Ottenberg styling her.
36:02So you can tell that she's really stepping into a new fashion era. Mel Ottenberg, the stylist who famously started with Rihanna many years ago. And editor of Interview Magazine. I loved Coleman Domingo and Jacquemus. And I was sad he wasn't at the main Oscars because he's always one of my favorites on the red carpet. I think it's sort of cool if you don't have a reason to be at the Oscars to not go. I agree. Agreed. Agreed. And I also thought Paul Mescal and Gracie Abrams just looked so, were such a chic couple and looked so in love. Such cuddly couples moments. I agree. Rose and Bobby Cannavale, my personal heroes, and their bearded dragon, which they've been talking about in interviews, which I love.
36:41They were so cute. I mean, I also felt that as far as indie designers or designers, you know, the huge houses, there were a couple of shout outs at the Vanity Fair party. We talked about Odessa in Harris Reed. But then I like that Emily Rudajowski wore Connor Ives. And then we had Chloe Fineman, who looked really beautiful in this satin Kohlmeyer dress, which I rarely see on the red carpet. So I thought it was nice to see some indie designers there, too. Oh, Sarah Paulson wore matière fécale. I know. I saw that. I know. I love that. That's a talk about an indie. Yeah. Mick Jagger showing up on the Vanity Fair red carpet was a little bit of a surprise to me.
37:24Oh, my God. He was there? Wait, I missed that. I didn't see him. Totally. Totally. He looks like he's fresh off the country club, too. I want to see. No tie, open collar shirt. My God. Oh, my God. The OG. I think those are sneakers. Yeah, those are black sneakers he's wearing. Wow. Truly off the back nine to the Vanity Fair Oscars party. I love it. Now that we are finally closing out what has felt like a marathon of an award season. Actually, it was the half marathon in New York yesterday. What were the biggest takeaways? Christian, biggest fashion takeaways? Taylor, biggest film takeaways? I was happy to see some color.
38:02Like I said before, I think this award season finally saw some fresh new colors. But as far as trends go, this award season, it was just traditional glamour. I wish I could say something more exciting, but a lot of feathers. a lot of sequins, a lot of slits, a lot of trains. It's just what we see. It's what works in Hollywood. But I loved it. I think it was fab. I think people looked really great this year. As traditional as it was, it felt very modern and very current as opposed to feeling dated most of the time. So loved seeing that. And I would add to that just to say it felt like the sort of big designers who we've seen at these houses that change, that shift, they hit their stride in red carpet dressings.
38:42I think it was a little bit of a rocky start when I think back to Venice and we had those first looks appear from Dior and Chanel. But now I think designers like Mathieu, Blazet at Chanel and Jonathan Anderson at Dior have really figured out how they show up in those spaces. That to me was a big takeaway as well. Totally. For me, for movies, I think it's like this sort of ironic moment where the movies seem really healthy, right? Like, you know, you have these big studio movies that sort of thread the needle between being commercially successful, sinners in one battle after another, and being critically successful, win the big awards, which is sort of what the industry wants, a sign of the industry being healthy.
39:26But guys, the industry is not healthy. I mean, Warner Brothers, the studio behind those two movies, just sold to, you know, David Ellison and Paramount. And everyone is fretting, not that you could tell inside the Oscars last night, but everyone is fretting about the future of movies. I mean, I was a little sad for indie movies. I felt like some of the cool indie movies from the year maybe didn't really get much. Like, you know, if you're like a Train Dreams fan, you left indie-handed. But I think people may look back on Oscars 2026 as kind of like a moment where, you know, the calm before the storm, like a moment where Hollywood seemed to be quite healthy when it was actually teetering on a different kind of, you know, business model or way forward or something.
40:07So it seemed like, you know, in the past, the Oscars have either given the Best Picture award to like a very commercially successful, slightly kind of middling movie, like maybe a Green Book is a classic example of that, or a like rapturously received indie that 14 people saw. You know, I mean, Nomadland, no shots on Nomadland, which I think is a beautiful movie, could be the example of that. This year seemed like the perfect middle ground. Everyone saw One Battle After Another. Everyone saw Sinners. And those were the two movies at the top of the heap. So a good night for movies in probably a perilous moment for movies.
40:41So did we do it? Yay. Are you going to watch Weapons? Nope. No. The poster alone is not doing it for me. It's too scary. It's so good. No. No horror. I can't. No horror for me. No. Life is horrifying enough. No, no, no. Who would get further, me in Wicked 2 or you in Weapons? We can just like set the stopwatch See who bails first Thanks everybody for joining us At this early hour Bye Choma Bye, that was really fun, thanks for informing me I love these sessions Alright guys, that's it For our special Oscars episode

That's basically dialing back the clock to not only pre-World War II, but really it's a pre-20th century view of the world. And I would say it's a world of permanent insecurity that we're looking at. The marathon that is Awards Season (at least for those of us with jobs in media) finally came to its close last night. As has become tradition, the Run-Through podcast hosts, along with colleagues Taylor Antrim and Christian Allaire, gathered early on this foggy morning to discuss their takes on the 98th Academy Awards.
The conversation started off with everyone’s best dressed picks. For Chioma, this included Wunmi Mosaku who dazzled in her sparkling emerald green Louis Vuitton dress. The list of best dressed also included Renate Reinsve, another star in Louis Vuitton, and Gwenyth Paltrow in Armani Privé who both sported dramatic slits. Slits were just one of the fashion trends making a splash on last night's red carpet, reminding editors of Angelina Jolie’s internet-breaking dress slit at the 2012 ceremony.
Feathers were another item in vogue on the carpet and were worn by Teyana Taylor, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Demi Moore, Nicole Kidman, and Best Supporting Actress winner Amy Madigan. A conversation around the many jewels and rare diamonds being worn last night spawned a curiosity about the guards who work the Oscars. Perhaps a 2027 diamond guard get ready with me story is forthcoming?
As for two of the biggest categories of the night—best actor and best actress—everyone was in agreement that Michael B Jordan and recent guest of the podcast Jessie Buckley, were chic and deserving winners. Up next, Met gala season!
