I thought it was such a fun watch. Some thought-provoking questions about love and matchmaking math. And Pedro Pascal is... Jose, I spent the whole time trying to remember which way was the right way to say Pedro and which way was the way that Laya said it when you made fun of her. Was it Pedro is the wrong way or Pedro is the wrong way? Pedro is the right way. Okay. Pedro is the, the Anglicism, if you will. The gringoism. Can we say gringo? Whatever. We're, we can cut that.
09I can. I don't know if we can, actually. Anyway. Pedro Pascal was fantastic. And Chris Evans was good. I just, I had, I thought it was a really, I was extremely charmed throughout the whole thing. I love that. I love a rom-com. It's true. And it's sort of like, what is a rom-com in 2025? Because it has sort of a dark understory, but it feels, the themes it deals with, I thought were really smart and well-handled. Is Celine's song the Nora Ephron of our age? Dun-dun. Well, we also need to talk about the love triangle in Celine's song of it all, which I am obsessed with. It's true. She loves a love triangle.
52And the husband, of course, who wrote Challengers. Yeah. I want to know what I need a big juicy profile of those two and what they get up to I know right there's a running theme in both of their work I think Dakota Johnson is also underrated as a comedic actress I agree she's such a good actress I think she's such a good comedic actress and I think I mean I haven't seen it but I imagine that there are lots of kind of charming funny moments in this film I cannot wait to see it is definitely on my list of must-see films this summer. I love the trailer with the old-school voiceover that was like a proper 90s rom-com trailer.
36I felt like it was a young man for decades. Bring back the voiceover. Bring back the voiceover. And the material is actually on a list we are calling the He's Hot list of movies for this summer. Ooh! What did I say, we? Mostly me. tell us more what other movies are hot this summer Jose well it's I don't know if the movies are hot but they are hot in them you know what I mean so that's kind of what I'm saying but you know all the sort of like quote-unquote boy movies so like there's a new Superman coming this summer I love Nicholas Holt Nicholas Holt bald as Lex Luthor I don't think anyone was expecting to be crushing over Lex Luthor anytime soon but here we are Jonathan Bailey is in the new Jurassic Park movie I kind of love a dinosaur I do too, it's on my list so you know so it's I'm winning already and then of course you have Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal which is fab and then you have Pedro again for the new Fantastic Four so we kind of love that, we do love a sort of a blockbuster well it was a sort of a hunk It's an integral part of the summer, you know.
52It was a hunk summit at Cannes. It really was a hunk summit. So yes, this is continuing. And not to get too highbrow, but I was really enjoying our wonderful British folk colleague Radhika Seth's coverage of all the movies from Cannes. And the one that I really want to see is Sentimental Value, the new... Me too! Yes, me too! Yeah, Radhika Justco. With my girl Renate Rainsborough. Oh my God, the best, the worst person in the world. She was the star of that. love that movie Norwegian movie and she was so amazing I just remember really funny as well yeah yeah I remember being in the theater after that film and just like being completely immobile like I couldn't move it moved me so much and and Radhika was saying that she had the same experience with sentimental value where she she was just crying after it she said it was so powerful there's no release date on it yet so I don't know if we'll get to enjoy it this summer but I do think it's the pick.
49And she's an incredible actress. And I think this will kind of propel her to a much more global audience because I think this is much more going to be, have much more of a wide appeal. But The Worst Person in the World, I mean, it got Oscar, but did it get Oscar, it got an Oscar nom? Yeah, I think it got a best, for best international film. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But she was getting a lot of buzz for best actress and didn't get the nom. But I think this time around, she's in with a with a strong chance I say having not seen the movie but I believe in that and Elle Fanning to the photo call for the film was wearing a little graphic tee that was made by a high schooler that said walking tree or summer so there you go who needs Brad I need one of those t-shirts they need to start selling them we should all wear them to watch the movie um what are we reading about tv shows and just like that and just like that we're on to tv shows everyone is unconvinced i mean i i i watched the first episode and i was in hook line and sinker i mean there are some seriously unhinged outfits that carries ludicrously capacious hat and I don't know it's truly deranged what they're dressing them in but I'm here for it and I also I love I want more Seema Seema is my icon her smoking on her bed Seema is the one Seema is very sex on the city you know what I mean she would be friends with Samantha is sort of what I'm thinking.
36But I just, I love, and just like that, I love my girls, bring back my girls. I will say the one thing is, when I'm watching the show, I'm like, I don't remember a single thing that happened the last season, but that doesn't curtail my enjoyment of it. Exactly. The only part of it that I remember is that Carrie now has a cat named Shu. That I remember too. You know, why not? But that's the thing about it. It's like, that's the kind of show that I sometimes live for, like a show where nothing happens. I couldn't help but wonder, is this the kind of show I need? Speaking of shows where nothing happens, my favorite show is back this summer, The Gilded Age.
13The Gilded Age. Oh, yeah. My favorite show in the world. Have they built the opera house yet? Isn't that like the main plot point? Yes, that was the cliffhanger finale last season. But this is the gag about that show, right? It's a show where everyone is hot, everyone looks amazing in sort of all of this insane period clothing. You have Meryl Streep's daughter, who's pretty fab. You have Morgan Spector, who's like huge biceps, kind of like defy period clothing. I'm like, no one was eating that much protein during the Gilded Age, but like go off. Gilded Age is not protein chic. Absolutely not. Oh my God, go read my story now on Vogue.com.
54But I swear to God, this show is amazing because it's like historically accurate, but also not at all. and it's like yeah it's like one entire episode is dedicated to like this one guy who works in one of their homes building a clock you know and like will he do it will he get the little i love it i think it's great actually do you know what it should be a carrie coon summer that's who i want to be that it is a carrie coon dominating cultural cultural force there we go she she should she should own part of max because she's the reason why i subscribed well now it's hbo again
31We are going to take a short break. We'll be back in a moment.
41Hi, I'm Rebecca Ford, senior awards correspondent at Vanity Fair and co-host of Little Gold Men. Oscar season is upon us. Little Gold Men takes you behind the scenes of the race for the biggest prize in Hollywood. There's a hundred wrestlers in the room. but only one can be Oscar nominated. Whether you're a movie lover or an industry buff, Little Gold Men from Vanity Fair has everything you need to know about this year's Oscar race. Follow and listen to Little Gold Men wherever you get your podcasts.
26I'm really looking forward to actually Lena Dunham's new show Too Much it's all kind of based on her life but she co-wrote with her husband and it's her life her big move to London I don't know if you read her really touching story in New Yorker about breaking up with New York. I loved it. Yeah. So this basically this show, which I've seen, I've seen snippets of and super excited to see, um, picks up where she, where you kind of, where you leave her off in the story in London based on her big love of story with her husband. And it has a really stellar cast. Emera is in it. Lena Dunham's dog is in it.
07Um, it is, it's going to be really fun. I'm excited for that. I love Meg Stolter is playing the lead, right? I love she steals every scene and hacks, and I'm excited to see her have a leading lady moment. I'm also, I will be watching the Smurfs movie in theaters when it comes out. Oh. I know that everyone else... Do tell us how it is, but... I won't be going out of my way, I'm afraid. What I will be watching, however, listen, the Rihanna song didn't really got me there, But you know what? If you played at the club, maybe I'll bump to it. But we discussed Freak Your Friday. I will be sad for Freak Your Friday.
47Maybe I will be sad alone, but I will be sad. People are very excited. Listen, me and Lindsay Lohan, I will show up to the opening of an envelope for Lindsay. I will watch her watch paint dry. She's also wearing Christopher John Rogers on the poster of the movie. Oh, is she? that's that's yeah that's my sister like yeah we love exactly i'm also ready did anybody see megan because i'm ready for megan 2.0 megan 2.0 i love i also love megan on social media like megan official account on x having beef with like chucky is oh i don't think i follow that i've got to get into it it's so funny um i really want to watch final destination bloodlines yeah maybe it's a what horror movie summer no i kid you okay so like yesterday i saw this tiktok that charlie xdx posted and she was talking about final destination plot lines about how final destination is this franchise where hot people die and she was like we should do one about just it girls and it's like me rachel senate um i don't remember what she said but i was like yeah like actually i just i just you know i love a final destination movie that will make me not want to go anywhere for like a month.
04I will say as well, those like the scenarios in which people die in those movies have really stuck with me. Interesting. If I'm driving behind a truck that has anything sort of loose in the back, I'm like, I'm moving lanes. I can never go in a sunbed ever because of those movies. I do not wear chains or necklaces into a pool. Frontal cortex. Very much same. They have made me much more careful person all right ladies is it lord summer or not i i i love lord with all of my heart i think people just don't get it i think lord is usually ahead when she did solar power and liam is just kind of like you know what i'm just gonna let her speak and i appreciate that so go ahead and yourself liam um i'm saying like i think when lord released solar power it's really funny because when like Laura and I are basically the same age I think she's like one year younger than me so like whenever she was like angsty as a teenager I was angsty as a teenager and then when she really saw her power I was like oh my god Laura and I are both happy now again so that was really cute but I do think she sort of released this album about being like bi-bee and chill and you know really within your like in comfortable with yourself and no one was there yet and then years later you have like a radical optimism moment with Dua Lipa and everyone's like yes And I'm like, we were there.
30So that's my take. I do think it'll be a Lord Summer. I think she's been brilliant at making people talk about her. It's been really fascinating to watch her. Every time she does something, people have so many questions about it. Whether it's her talking about her gender identity, her talking about whatever it is, people are like, wait. And I just think that's a good pop star. you know and i'm sort of intrigued by i feel like every one of her albums has either been a sort of it's had some kind of concept surrounding it or the way she writes lyrics it's very much like steeped in metaphor and it's very poetic and it seems like what she's going for this time around is something really sort of raw and quite frank lyrically and i'm sort of curious to see what she does with that choma you are going to the tour of the summer tell us tell us your cowboy carter outfit oh i haven't got it planned yet um but i've been sort of keenly watching everyone on instagram with their looks so i guess i'm gonna have to find something
47i didn't i it's so bad i think i was more of an observer at the renaissance tour too because i I didn't, I didn't, actually maybe I did wear something more disco-y, but not silver. I didn't wear like head to toe silver, but I do love, I like watching the fans. I love watching the fans. I have a couple of shows I'm excited about. Georgia Smith is playing early next month too, which I'm excited about. She has a few days. She's fab. And I recently saw her at Ronnie Scott's, which is such a treat because so great seeing an artist in such a small space, but it'd be great to see her kind of take up a bigger venue too.
22and then I'm super excited for Kendrick and SZA to come to London. I have seen videos of the MetLife Stadium outside the MetLife Stadium and everybody singing in unison to They're Not Like Us and it's just incredible. So I can't imagine what it's going to be like because I just can't imagine like a stadium full of people doing, yeah singing in unison to this crazy song that was obviously the the song of 2024 i don't know who you guys are excited to see in in concert this this summer i well i i was i'm devastated because i was supposed to go to cowboy carter with my friends last week in new york because we went together to renaissance but i couldn't go um because i'm i'm in my little immigration hiatus, but I'll be back.
15So I couldn't go. But I did see Lady Gaga in Mexico City when I was there for a book Mexico moment. That was insane. What were the crowds like? The crowd was amazing. I mean, listen, I love Lady Gaga. That is no secret. The office. I went to the Chromatica Ball. That was great. But Mayhem is a completely different experience but also like latin american fans in general like are very committed in concerts because we don't have a lot of artists that sort of like really lock in and like take the same quality of tour to our cities as they do elsewhere in the world so like everyone was so thrilled in mexico i kid you not the the looks were like insane like for a minute i was like should i be like shooting this street style on my phone i was like should i be like on assignment like it was crazy so i'm really excited i know um and then i was like i'm not working but but i still did but um yeah i mean that was crazy obviously the real concert that she did on the beach was insane i watched some of the clips of her performing at coachella and i also went to see the chromatical ball and she looks so much more happy to be on stage and just really giving her all like the choreo the singing the vocals it's like it's pretty astonishing really like it was such a it's amazing reminder of what an incredible performer she is and how she got yeah the position exactly to where she is you know what i'm excited about and it's extremely um mayhem ball adjacent is gustavo dudamel is coming for a few weeks to new york from la before he next year takes up full residency at the New York Phil.
07And he is playing at the Summer Series in Central Park. And I love these New York Phil's concerts that they do in Central Park. It is such a, like, er New York experience in the summer. And that's next week. And I'm very excited. There's Tchaikovsky. There's Stravinsky. Everything's happening for Dudamel. Everything's coming up Dudamel. That's going to be so major. And then Miley's Something Beautiful is coming out. I'm super excited for that one actually she's been working with some really interesting people on it one of my favorite bands always co-wrote one of the songs oh really? love I just love Miley I think Miley just makes some really good music I love that she's just she's just doing Miley to quote one of her own songs but I just I love to hear she looks incredible she's wearing the best fashion the best archives lots of amazing alaya and mugler alaya mugler i love that she made a visual album just to wear the things yeah because when someone says they're doing a visual album i sort of assume that it's going to be some they're doing lemonade high concept you know but it's just her looking fabulous and couture and amazing archival dresses they pulled the run-through will be back in just a moment.
59And we're back.
04All right, team, what are we reading? What are we reading? I have been really deep into male mogul memoir spring, which is Barry Diller, Graydon Carter, Keith McNally. It's been a real BD memoir spring, and now it's moving into a mom memoir summer. Amanda Hess wrote this really good book called Second Life. She's a tech reporter for The New York Times, and it's about her sort of pregnancy and early motherhood being sort of under the gaze of the algorithm and how entwined motherhood has become with—
50digital apparatuses. But it's very good, and I thought it was sort of an interesting take on something we've all read and thought a lot about. And Molly Jong Fast's memoir about her mother, Erica Jong, How to Lose Your Mother, is coming out in a few weeks, and people are very excited about that. I also just finished a galley of my friend Mike Grimbaum's excellent book about Condé Nast, Empire of the Elites, And it is so juicy and fun and such a just a delightful and fascinating account of an anthropological study of sort of American culture in the 80s and 90s through the lens of Condé Nast. So I'm really excited for people to read that.
33That's coming out in July. I also I'm a big Edward St. Aubin, Patrick Melrose devotee. Oh, I love him. His new book Parallel Lines comes out. Parallel Lines. Yeah. And I was sort of intrigued by the Ron Chernow, Mark Twain biography, but then it got such a mean review in the Times. It sort of piqued my interest more. But yeah, that's my list of the moment. If you want a fun beach read this summer, I just finished a book that I really enjoyed by, I think she's the first, it's her first novel. She's called Darrow Farr and it's called The Bombshell. And it's about this kind of 17-year-old French politician's daughter in Corsica in the 90s who has this very sort of pampered, privileged existence, but then gets kidnapped by like a kind of separatist independence group and becomes radicalized.
27but it's also very funny and it's all written from her perspective and it has a lot of interesting things to say about you know performative politics and charisma and image and how we um i don't know how we choose our leaders and the sort of politicians that we're drawn to and the political figures that we're drawn to i guess but it but it's also really fun it's honestly it's a beach read it's page turner i had a great time with it wait jose what are you reading what am i reading i am reading tommy dorfman's memoir um oh which we just excerpted on it yes um it came out this week it is a really i'm taking my time with it but it's a it's been it's been a really beautiful read sort of as like i only recently got into know tommy so it's been really interesting to sort of read it in her words but sort of her contextualizing her life over the past sort of decade talk about transition addiction marriage divorce all of these things um has just been really beautiful and just really cathartic in a sort of way it's written like a very like the way she will talk to you so i think that's really beautiful and i am also reading um robin givon's virgil abloh book oh how's that yeah it is a very interesting book so far.
48I've always loved her voice as a critic. I think she's always been very fair and very honest and very nuanced. And this book does exactly that, except that what is really interesting about it too is that she's so acutely aware that she's not talking to just fashion people. She's talking about sort of like the mainstream culture at large, who's been also really fascinated and obsessed with Virgil's legacy. So she's been very interestingly balancing the, you know, Virgil became iconic because of this and he made an impact in fashion because the way he approached it, but also like collectively fashion didn't always love the designs.
26And this is also why, and like sort of finding the balance between those two truths is really interesting and something I think people haven't necessarily done very eloquently since his passing. So it's a really great one. I do recommend it. Liam, art, theater, art and theater that you're seeing? Well, I mean, I've seen two really amazing exhibitions fairly recently, and I believe they're both running all through the summer. But the first one was sort of an exhibition about Lee Bowery at the Tate Modern in London. And if you're in London anytime this summer, I would urge you to go and see it because I don't know how familiar you are with Lee, but He was this sort of amazing, I think he was born in Australia, but he's this kind of underground legend who died of AIDS in the 90s and was a sort of performance artist slash club kid in the kind of post-New Romantic era of 1980s London.
28And the show is, it's a real kind of eclectic mix of objects and artworks and clothes as well. Lots of the amazing Mr. Pearl corsets that he used to wear and he was amused to Lucian Freud. So there are some of his kind of paintings of him and videos of his collaborations with the amazing choreographer Michael Clarke. It's a really special show and also has a strong fashion link. He was very much an inspiration for Galliano and McQueen. And it's really worth seeing if you're in town. And then I also saw a couple of weeks ago the David Hockney retrospective at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, which was really special as well.
15I can't wait to see that. Are you going to be able to catch it soon? I don't know. I it's always hard to get to fit in the Fondation when you're in Paris for the I know it's a bit of a shock first world problems but I've been I've heard so much about it and I'm a huge David Hockney fan I just love love his work so that would definitely be on my list as well as Lee Barry those are the two that I'm like still wanting to see this summer I'm going to see The Sergeant today oh really the sergeant show at the met with madam x it's been so crowded and so i'm finally um going uh for a little tour this evening um and i'm so excited because i'm such a sucker for sergeant um and i'm also uh excited for the jane austen exhibit at the morgan library one thing about me I'm consistent and also we've talked about the Frick reopening a lot but I will say that Vladimir Konevsky the porcelain artist who made the beautiful flowers that are all over the museum for its reopening the Vladimir florals are only there until October and they really are exquisite works of art so I recommend everyone go before they are whisked away oh i have one more i have one one more exhibit in london that i'm i'm dying to see which is the michaela year with dan she's incredible painter we covered in the magazine recently jack davidson shot her and the portraits are just so beautiful and i haven't seen her work up close and she's showing at hauser and werff until until until august so i have some time um but i feel like here as far as theater everybody's talking about evita about jamie lloyd's um evita uh rachel rachel ziegler will be eva perron we're all super excited it's gonna be kind of an amazing production i think it opens in june or july let's see but that feels like what everyone that feels like that definitely feels like the hottest ticket this summer well i feel like we can't we can't do it we we have to talk about the fashion because it's there are still several debuts left that are coming up um i'm gonna hand it over to you jose because i feel like you you're going to give us a full rundown of what we can expect let's do it so obviously this has been a really transformational year and a half for fashion but i do like we're finally sort of you know settled in terms of designers shifting and moving around most of the debuts are for September but the summer is a little promising I will say so during menswear in Paris late June I think it's for the 27th is Jonathan Anderson's first collection at Dior for Dior men so that'll be fascinating I think there's a lot of expectations about what that can look like or that should look like um so everyone's really curious about that then we also have to sorry to interrupt jose i feel like it would be great to sort of give some background because jonathan started with menswear so it's kind of nice that he's coming full circle no yeah i i agree i mean i think it's interesting like i think jonathan is a very influential designer in culture but i think as it pertains to fashion specifically he is a very influential menswear designer um so i think it'll be interesting to sort of Dior men has always, you know, it used to be Dior home before Kim Jones, but it's always been a very interesting kind of experimental ground for menswear.
06It's always taken the shape of whatever designer is running it. You know, when Eddie Slimane was doing it, it was, you know, famously all about the skinny jeans, spring 2005, famous show about his skinny jeans. But I do think it's really interesting because, because it, you know, it doesn't necessarily have a lot of, a lot of the Dior house coats, like the new look, the bar jacket, all these things don't necessarily apply to menswear as much or are not known in culture as part of menswear, that it is a place where you can do a lot. So that'll be really interesting to see. I feel like Dior Arm and the women's wear collections have always, they felt very siloed.
42They've always sort of operated within their own worlds. And it'll be interesting to see how Jonathan, you know, finds a synergy there and brings them together to create a 360-degree Dior wardrobe. I think this will be the first time that literally since Mr. Dior, I think that there is only one designer at the helm of all of Men's Work Couture and Ready Tour, and that will be Jonathan Anderson. Another thing that will be really interesting for the summer is Glenn Martins' debut for Margiela is going to be a couture collection, which is also interestingly full circle because John Galliano's Swan Song at Margiela was the couture show seen around the world spring 2024 from last January.
30So it'll be interesting to see Glenn take on Margiela from couture first. And he'll be doing H &M later in the year so it'll be a real high-low year for him, won't he? Isn't he the next collaborator? I was going to ask you about collabs. he's the next yeah that's a guy that can do both exactly he contains multitudes um it is it is interesting that you mentioned that show because you know every time carl agroffield passed everyone was like who's the next carl yeah i was gonna say um you know and famously carl was the first exactly he was the first h &m collaboration in terms of designers so that'll be really it is interesting to sort of contextualize glenn as a designer and culture as this guy who's giving you like diesel julia fox tom of finland all of the things but at the same time it's giving you like y project or margela deep cuts right so that's the way that he worked with like denim at diesel was you know from a technical perspective so extraordinary i'm very excited to see what he does with a couture atelier at his fingertips you know i think we might be in for some really amazing surprises well i mean i think we've had a taste from what he did at jean-paul gautier i think he was definitely one of the strongest of course yeah collaborators so we have we've had a little we we have a we've had a sense but yeah if you will exactly exactly and and speaking of couture there's also isn't isn't demna doing his last it is it is so demna's last collection yep Demma's last collection for Balenciaga will be a couture collection as well also really interesting because he was the designer that brought well Balenciaga brought couture back since Cristobal Balenciaga's years with Demna so it is really interesting that his last sort of effort will be a couture collection so that's like it is sort of like an interesting summer of what will happen you know I think Glenn and Jonathan specifically are designers that have helped set kind of the pace and the tone and the mood of fashion the last couple of years, especially the last year.
45So having them sort of go first before ahead of September is really interesting. And I feel for you and all of our beloved colleagues on Vogue Runway with the deluge of like debuts that's going to happen in September. so at least they're spreading out a little bit and you won't be so you're going to have a couple you can get ahead of a few stories September to remember guys as Candy Pratt's prize used to say September is the January of fashion wait there's one more actually Michael Ryder at Celine I'm really excited for that one me too he's so handsome so handsome very well dressed man like one of the best dressed men in New York when he used to live here but his debut is scheduled for the day before couture so july 6th um that'll be really interesting because i think you know he his appointment was announced in october of 2024 i think like it's been it's been a minute and it's the one person we haven't heard anything about like all of the other designers have placed you know sarberto undressed timothé chalamet it's true he's had no you know everyone sort of gave you like an amuse-bouche everyone tried to give you like a little tease and he's sort of been fully zip just working on it so i think it'll be is it a menswear show or a co-ed show that's happening it is i believe a co-ed show we actually don't have a lot of information about it but um you know eddie zelman when he was at saline he sort of like took them out of the fashion calendar um and started he was showing doing shows right before like right in between menswear and couture and then he started doing the video so like you know it's interesting that they're sort of following that cadence, at least for now.
32I do think it's smart for these designers to sort of stage their interviews during the summer instead of September because they get a little more attention. So I don't know. They have to share the... No one likes to share their toys. Exactly. They have to share the spotlight a little bit with less people, you know? So that'll be interesting. But it is an interesting summer for fashion. So we shall see.
