I'm Elvis Mitchell. and if anyone knows about the way that being a part of a team can help you keep going in the worst of times, it's NFL star turned actor, Nnamdi Asmonga. The treat for him watching a team while being on the NFL's injured player list. I'm Nnamdi Asmonga. This is the treat.
30I played in the NFL for about 11 years and I had a pretty devastating leg injury at a point and I remember being in rehab in the off season trying to get myself back going. I was going through a stage of depression, trying to figure out how my bones will start working again. So one day my physical therapist comes in and he says, have you ever seen this show called Band of Brothers?
09I said, no, what's that? And he says, well, you know, it's World War II. It's an HBO miniseries. It's about 10 episodes. It follows Easy Company, this company of, you know, the parachute troops. And it starts from their training in World War II to the end of World War II. And he says, it's pretty great. I said, no, let's put it on. And every day for the rest of my physical therapy during that offseason, we watched Band of Brothers. We are down. We are down. We are down. Now what company is this? Easy company. What do we do? Stand up. Do not help that man. Do not help that man. Do not stop. During that offseason, I probably saw the series maybe 25 times or, you know, 20 times.
04And I'm not just talking about an episode. And this is pre-binging. This is pre-binging. But I would binge on this HBO series. And it came out, you know, maybe a couple days before 9-11. And so this was years later that I was able to sort of come across it. I mean, over 10 years later, probably. The estuary of the Doove River divides two beachheads, code named Utah here and Omaha here. Seaborne Infantry will hit these beaches in force at a date and time to be specified. H hour, D day. Airborne's objective, gentlemen, is to take the town of Carentan. There was something about the camaraderie of the guys.
45There was something about all of these guys coming together for a common goal, you know, putting it all on the line. You know, the battles that they were going through together, lifting each other up, the encouragement. There was something about all of that that was exactly what I needed in that moment. and it gave me the energy and the strength and sort of the will to keep going during that off-season with my physical therapy and my rehab, and it really broke me from that depressed state.
28Till this day, if I need inspiration, if I need to get going in some sort of way, I put on Band of Brothers and I'll watch it from start to finish. If I'm on a plane, if I'm struggling in anything, it's the thing that sort of keeps me going. So that question, have you ever seen Band of Brothers, I think changed my life.
