Jerrod Carmichael discusses how therapy and self-awareness shaped his comedy, and reviews HBO’s The Sopranos as a “documentary” of truth about an Italian-American family in New Jersey. He connects modern “shrinks and counselors” culture to older “strong, silent type” ideals, arguing that emotional openness can be unstoppable once someone is “in touch with his feelings.”

Season 4 finds the team determined to survive and take The Bear to the next level. Emmy eligible and now streaming on Hulu. Welcome to The Treat. I'm Elvis Mitchell. Jerrod Carmichael is an actor, a director, and more importantly, a comedian who, in the last few years, has made his self-awareness the center of his act and how therapy gave him a new perspective. For The Treat, he binged a TV series about a larger-than-life figure who found and lost himself after turning to therapy.

0:39Jerrod Carmichael:I'm Gerard Carmichael. This is The Treat. Woke up the snow, got yourself young. Your mama always said you'd be there. Chosen one, just a little. Something that's had a big emotional impact on me lately, I'll speak about the most recent thing, and that is The Sopranos. Nowadays, everybody's got to go to shrinks and counselors and go on Sally, Jesse, Raphael and talk about their problems. Whatever happened to Gary Cooper, the strong, silent type? That was an American. He wasn't in touch with his feelings. He just did what he had to do. See, what they didn't know was once they got Gary Cooper in touch with his feelings, that they wouldn't be able to shut him up.

1:24And then it's dysfunctionist and dysfunctionat and dysfunctional mafungu.

1:28Jerrod Carmichael:I just watched all of The Sopranos for the first time. I started years ago, but I never finished because I was poor. And I recently finished. And it's one of the most incredible pieces of art that I've ever seen. It's funny. It's heartbreaking. It's frightening. He's got to be dead by now, right? How could he not be? it. Let's just go. Squirrels will lead them anyway. Where do we park? Back there. Half a mile or so. You sure? Because I thought we kind of looped around. Four years in the army, kid. We just follow our own footprints. Come on. I think all great art is documentary in some form. And The The Sopranos is a documentary about an Italian family in New Jersey.

2:21I got my associate's degree already. It took me five years. And now it's only like six months more for my massage license. So you want to run a massage parlor? No. I'm going to be a licensed massage therapist.

2:39Jerrod Carmichael:It's such a documentary that Steve Buscemi is in one season. And I was like, please whack him. I love Steve Buscemi, incredible actor, but I knew him, so he was taking me out of the dock. Just the crumbs on James Gandolfini's shirt, the looks that Edie Falco gives, everything is working in concert to make one of the greatest pieces of truth I've ever seen, and I love it so much. I'm on Prozac. Oh, oh my God. I've been seeing the therapist. Oh, my God. I think that's great. I think that's so wonderful. I think that's so gutsy. Take it easy. I just think that's very, very wonderful. Well, you think I was Hannibal Lecter before or something?

3:25I just think it's great. Psychology doesn't address the soul. That's something else.

3:29Jerrod Carmichael:The Sopranos, incredible. Ten out of ten recommend. You know those things that everyone loves and you want to rebel against? You're like, sure, is it as good as everyone says? Yes, it's as good as everyone says. respect it during its time, still, if it came on today, would be revolutionary television. The beast in me

From the publisher

Jerrod Carmichael’s confessional comedic work stands apart. In the last five years, he has created two ground-breaking works: the intimate and revealing Rothaniel and the HBO documentary series Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, which was not without controversy. For his treat, he recommends an acclaimed HBO series that he considers to be its own documentary.
