0:00Welcome to The Treat. I'm Elvis Mitchell. Tim Robbins is an Oscar-winning actor and director who has directed actors to Oscar-winning performances, including Susan Sarandon and Dead Man Walking. He also runs the exciting Culver City Theater, The Actors Gang. For The Treat, Robbins rolls up his sleeves and communes with the oldest stage there is.

0:27I'm Tim Robbins and this is The Treat

0:35I just want to say one of the biggest treats in my life over the past few years has been my discovery of the relationship between nurturing nature and what it produces

0:55I've planted some pretty big gardens to grow vegetables of various kinds. And the bounty that comes with just rain and sunshine is something that, of course, everyone's known for so long, but when you get in a direct relationship with it, where you're eating that tomato or you're pickling that cucumber, there's nothing like it. There's nothing like it.

1:29I had a piece of land, and I thought, well, that gets a lot of sunlight all day long. I wonder if that would be a good place to put a garden, and then you plant something one year, and it is a good place to plant a garden. And then over the past few years, I've been doing a garden every year. This year I did one with my son, and we went up there and we planted. This is up in New York State. And I get so much joy out of that. You know, not to mention the staple crops, but then all the kinds of herbs that you can grow and that nature's just ready to provide you for very little money. Just, you know, constant source of taste.

2:06And so to wake up in the morning and to go out and get some thyme and some sage and put that in some butter and then make an omelet with some fresh thyme and sage. It's just, you know, it's what a joy.

2:30And then there's all kinds of other things that you can grow that have nothing to do with food, but have everything to do with beauty and creating beauty around yourself, blooming flowers and great smells. The idea that this is all out there, we can have it, But I think sometimes in our maelstroms of life and pressure and tension, we tend to forget to wake up and smell the roses, you know?

3:10Oscar-winning star of stage, screen, and TV, Tim Robbins. his newest project is the Apple TV series Silo. His treat is his garden. The Treat is produced by Rebecca Mooney and mixed by Katie Gilchrist, who keep it growing. And it's tended by Elvis Mitchell. It's The Treat.

3:50Thank you.

From the publisher

Oscar-winning actor Tim Robbins wants to be a lifelong student. He has demonstrated that through never repeating a role as actor, his ambitious films as director, and as the founder of the nonprofit theater troupe The Actors’ Gang. His treat is a learning experience as well. Robbins gives an appreciation of what he learned nature can provide with just a few ingredients.
