Writer and director Wes Anderson has evolved into a storyteller who creates and examines the most minute details of his character's environments. From his first film, Bottle Rocket, to the most recent, The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson will be hosting a three-night stand of music from his films, music from the films of Wes Anderson, at the Hollywood Bowl on July 10th, 11th, and 12th, with a guest roster that includes the the L.A. Philharmonic, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Beck, and surprise guests. So it stands to reason that Anderson's Treat is a piece of demanding and evocative work in an architecture museum.
0:43I'm Wes Anderson, and this is The Treat.
0:53there's a building in a place called chateau la coste near aix-en-provence in france and it's a sort of art vineyard or something you know this place there are all kinds of artworks that have been installed in this place and among these artworks and architects inventions that are there is one by the architect Richard Rogers. It's the Richard Rogers Gallery at Chateau Lacoste.
1:31Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano, they built the Pompidou. Richard did Lloyd's of London, Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport and dozens and dozens and dozens of other big important buildings. And what the building is, is it's a tube. And he's built houses that are tubes before in a way that are sort of sleeves. But this one is a long, slender tube that is surrounded by this metal structure, kind of like a piece of scaffolding. And it sticks out off of the side of this hill into space with no support. So it's sort of like a bridge with nothing holding it up.
2:19and what is in fact holding it up is you know sort of cantilevered thing and there's as much of the building sticking down into the earth just structural support where it touches the land so it's actually an L but the vertical part of the L is invisible because it's all underground and the building is sustained by this with cables and with these crazy kinds of bolts. And it's really fascinating. And the experience of going into it is that you're experiencing a piece of architecture that is scary because you just stick out into space and at the end there's a window and there's nothing holding you up.
2:56And, you know, Lloyd's, for instance, is also a scary building. If you have any fear of heights, this is a scary building to be in.
3:07So it's a place to experience art, but it is also a really magnificent work of a modern artist. Someone with a very strong view of what his work ought to accomplish out in the world. And I would just say, anybody who happens to be wandering around in the south of France, if you manage to get your way over there, it's worth seeing the Richard Rogers Gallery at Chateau Lacoste.

From the publisher
Among other things, director Wes Anderson is famous for his particular aesthetic taste, which runs through his films such as 'The Royal Tenenbaums,' 'The Darjeeling Limited,' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel.' He is also known for the distinctive music scores and soundtracks that set the tone. That music will be celebrated in a three-concert event at the Hollywood Bowl on July 10-12. For his treat, however, he focuses on the visual: an architectural wonder in France whose ingenious design makes one wonder how it holds itself up.
