A bonus episode of The Good, The Bad, and The Healthy explaining 10 ways big food companies and supermarket practices can trick shoppers into paying more for less healthy food.

Guests

No guest is interviewed; hosted by Sunna Van Kampen (Nutrition/health host). Other voices are only ad reads and unrelated hosts (e.g., Richard Coles/Emily Andrews; Monica Reinagle) and not guests for this episode.

Key claims

“Added protein” claims are small (about 20% more than standard); cheap honey may be adulterated; bakery items hide ingredients; brand-name cream cheese costs more and adds stabilizers; pasta pricing can reflect branding not ingredients; kid “healthy” snacks are often disguised junk; some egg brands charge for yolk color; loose/frozen produce saves money and can be as nutritious; margarine is more ultra-processed than butter; flavored yogurt is often sugary.

Notable examples

protein bagels vs normal bread; “blended” honey with EU/non-EU origins; cinnamon buns with 50+ ingredients; Philadelphia vs own-brand cream cheese; factory-code pasta “premium” vs “light” made in same factory; veggie straws marketed as vegetable-based but described as potato crisps with ~0.5% spinach powder; Burford Brown yolk color via paprika/marigold feed; buying loose fruit/veg saves 20–30%; flavored yogurt vs plain Greek yogurt.

2:07Hi guys, and welcome to this bonus episode of The Good, The Bad, and The Healthy, hosted by me, Sunna Van Kampen. Today, we're going to be exploring and discussing 10 ways that you're being tricked by big food companies into paying more for less healthy foods. For over 10 years, I've been on a journey exploring all things health, from the science to the simple psychology of how I can make me and my family healthier. and I'm here today to explore that journey with you and give you the 10 ways that you're being tricked the most by big food companies. So let's get into it. So number one on this list I have got products marketed with added protein.

2:52Now in principle adding protein into food is a great thing, it's more filling, we all don't really consume enough protein and we should be getting more. The problem here is with marketing because the claim with added protein or more protein literally only means that it's got 20 % more protein than the standard version of the product. So this is where you get protein bagels that have only got 12 grams of protein per 100 grams versus a normal bread with 10 grams of protein per 100 grams. So a totally insignificant difference that you're then paying a lot more for and getting usually a ton of additives added in there that you don't want in your body.

3:36So when I go for protein and I'm talking about protein on the go, the easiest and cheapest way to do it is to go for natural food sources. And this is where cheese is fantastic. Sliced packs of sliced cheese you can get from any supermarket, any express store on the go and it's typically around£2.50 for a pack of 10 cheese slices which will be about 55 to 70 grams of protein in that pack which is again cheaper than you'll pay for a protein bar and healthier because it's one ingredient versus 30 that you'll typically find in a protein bar. So protein go for natural sources eggs are another great one to get on the go you can get anywhere and are super cheap and affordable.

4:24Number two is cheap honey being sold that isn't always real honey. Now, there have been studies that show somewhere in the region up to 90, 95 % of honeys have been found to be adulterated. Now, some studies have done this. Some companies have disputed this. It's not settled science. But what's clear is honey is very expensive to get proper quality honey. And if you look on the back of most cheap bottles of honey, what you'll see is a disclaimer that says this is a blended honey from EU and non-EU origins, which means essentially they've mixed it all up in a big pot and you have no idea what you're getting or where you're getting it from and that step in the supply chain is where you will potentially get the opportunity for companies to cut the honey with glucose syrup to bulk it out and make it cheaper.

5:26Honey is a treat, I don't have it all the time but when I do I always look at the back of the label for a UK or local honey that comes from one source so that way I can be sure there's less opportunity for fraudulent adulteration of your honey and you're getting the real deal. So buy it locally if you can, or if not, look for one that says Spanish honey or Greek honey, and it comes from one origin. Then the point number three in the ways you're being tricked is the bakery section. Often in the bakery section, you think, great, this is all fresh. It looks brilliant. It smells nice but the reality is they don't show you the ingredients lists which is a big big problem because it means they can get away with a lot of things that they couldn't get away with if it was the normal packaging with the ingredients disclosed so when you look at supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi their bakery sections are famous for being cheap and fresh and exciting with loads of weird and wonderful things but the reality is we've discovered that a cinnamon bun might have 50 plus ingredients whilst their so-called sourdough will have added sugar and added rapeseed oil in it making it not a clean sourdough that I would recommend so always check the ingredients and if they're not showing you the ingredients be careful because they're usually hiding something.

6:54number four stop buying philadelphia um why it's not because i hate philadelphia cheese and i'm anti them it's just it is more expensive than own brand cream cheese and for that increasing cost you're actually getting more additives it's got gums and stabilizers in there so the own label version is usually about a pound cheaper and you get no additives for that cost saving so you save your money and you save your health by just buying own labels. So stop being brand loyal, get the own label supermarket versions of cream cheese and you're on to a win-win scenario. Number five, always check where your pasta is coming from.

7:38We all love it. Pasta is a classic, it's a staple in most homes and it's essential that you get a good quality pasta. But for your wallet, what you need to do is make sure you check the labels because there are factory codes on the packaging. And what you'll see is the exact same factory often produces the pasta, but one is a premium version and one is a light version, but the ingredients are exactly the same. The product identical has been made in the same factory, yet you're just paying more for a brand perception. to always look for a good quality pasta because the dried Italian ones are always, always way better and much closer to proper pasta that we should be eating.

8:2675 % of women who seek menopause care don't receive it. The lying awake at 3am wondering what's happening to your body ends now. 9:03A morning working in the garden or maybe on the golf course can leave you more depleted than you realize and plain water isn't always the most efficient way to restore the balance. That's where Liquid IV comes in. Its science-backed formula is clinically proven to hydrate faster than water alone. Whether you're exercising, playing outside, or simply surviving a summer heat wave, it's an easy way to stay hydrated. Shop now at liquidiv.com. Liquid IV, hydration that goes wherever life takes you. um number six and this one is personal because i have two kids and kids snacks are painfully marketed to kids to look health healthily whilst hiding dark dark secrets the worst offender in the industry is veggie straws they claim to be vegetable based they have nice characters on the front with all the vegetables but in reality they're potato crisps with seed oils and they have about 0.5 % spinach powder added in so complete nonsense not going to be healthy for your toddlers and it's just marketed as a health food to trick you into giving your kids unhealthy crisps from a young age which is a terrible terrible idea so from a kid's perspective the things I look for are always trying to get them as healthy and as natural foods as possible.

10:28So something like coconut chips is a great shout. Something like Superfoodio peanut butter buttons are great snacks for kids or baby bells and cheesies, which are essentially just dried and packaged cheese. So one ingredient, single snacks. It doesn't need a cartoon character on it for it to be for your kids. You just want to give them real and healthy food on the go without all the fake marketed kid snacks, which are usually just as bad as crisps and biscuits and chocolate bars. They're no real healthier. So on to number seven, we've got Burford Brown eggs. I'm sorry for all you Burford Brown lovers.

11:09These eggs are a little bit of a scam. Now they're free range eggs. They farm to high standards. So they're not a bad company at all, but you are paying a very high premium for those eggs because you want that golden, dark orange yolk. Now, whilst it's nice for Instagram, the reality is it's not doing anything different for your health because they are feeding their chickens with paprika and marigold to make sure that they get that dark yolk consistently in all their eggs. So this is just a marketing trick to get more of your money. If you want to look after your health as best as possible, always buy free range and organic because the nutritional profile of free range and organic eggs is always, always, always higher than battery farmed eggs.

11:58So look out and buy good quality eggs. Then number eight, fruit and veg. It's a classic. We all need to eat it. We all need our five a day. And the reality is you can save a ton of money by just doing this one simple trick that most of you don't bother doing. Now that is buy your fruit and veg loose. One, from an environmental point of view, they don't need to be all wrapped in plastic. Two, you are paying more for the convenience of it being wrapped in plastic. Typically, when you buy your fruit and veg loose, you can save anywhere between 20 and 30 % of the cost of that fruit and veg. So a really simple hack for your wallet to save your money.

12:43And also another way to do it is go to the frozen aisle and buy your fruit or veg frozen if they have the ones you're looking for, because that also saves your money. It reduces food waste and frozen veg is just as nutritious as fresh because it's frozen at source after being picked ripe whereas the fresh veg often has a long time to get to the shelf and the nutrients degrade over time the longer it takes to get to the shelf. Number nine, margarine. Biggest marketing con of the 80s and 90s where we were told saturated fat is going to kill you and we should all be switching to rapeseed oil based margarines which essentially are taking you away from an unprocessed or minimally processed butter which has one or two ingredients to an ultra processed margarine which has multiple ingredients that are much lower quality and much worse for your health so if you're looking to cut ultra processed foods make sure you're always buying butter over margarine and that will look after your health much better.

13:51And then finally, number 10, you know I'm a big yogurt fan. Greek yogurt is the OG. It is higher in protein and lower in sugar than Greek style, which is one of the biggest cons going. So you've got to buy the Greek yogurt and always, always, always avoid the flavored yogurts because the flavors in the yogurts are typically from fruit purees which basically just act as a sugar and some brands even add fruit purees and sugar on top so you're getting a very sugary breakfast when yogurt is so easy to just put in a bowl add some fresh fruit to it and you've got a nutritious and healthy breakfast so stay away from the flavored always go for plain and you will be much healthier for it so that in a nutshell is my top 10 ways to stop you from being tricked in the supermarket thanks for listening
