In short
Downsides (“cons”) of working for Diary of a CEO, framed through Steve Bartlett’s leadership and the culture at Flight Story—how strong team culture, process obsession, and experimentation trophies shape behavior and reduce ego.
Guests/backgrounds
The speaker is a Flight Story team member (first job; started business before; 21 years old). They describe working with senior execs (one 25–30 years experienced) and interviewing people from Steve’s team.
Key claims
Strong culture quickly reveals fit/mismatch; “where you go” depends on what you do and how you choose; process matters more than results; ego is minimized and redirected into experimentation.
Notable examples
“Experimentation trophy” awarded for failing experiments done well; celebrating learned failures over high-visibility marketing wins.

0:08They would very quickly either flourish or fail. It wouldn't take long. We've seen this in, you know, the exceptional team culture that Steve's built. When you have a strong team culture, like the culture we have at Flight Story, people stick out like a sore thumb. so if it isn't for someone you kind of instantly know because you're around other people who are obsessed about what they do they work exceptionally hard you're sat next to someone who's probably the best at the world in what they do and you're not really sure if you even know what you're doing but that relationship means that when someone comes in and they they either aren't don't care as much or they don't want the hard work as much as you do it instantly sticks out so the thing that they would struggle with is the mirror that's being held back up to them we said how bad do you want this because the reality is especially i think in the exceptional thing that steve and all the other execs at flight story do is they say where you go is solely determined by what you do and how you choose to do it it's not up to us you will get as much as you give from it and that's a
1:13Jack Frimston:choice that people have to make well what role do you think i'm just trying to imagine like you're all you know we've interviewed a few people from from steve's team and like you're all exceptional you've included you know amazing people probably at the at the top tier of what you do i sometimes wonder behind the scenes what what role ego might play in like i'm the guy this month no i'm the guy this month this trailer has just done amazing like this linkedin post just kicked off like what role does ego play in terms of bringing you all together or does it make you clash sometimes talk to us about that i'll tell you where we have the biggest ego uh the biggest ego we have in the office is around who has won the experimentation trophy okay so the ego gets the biggest when you've genuinely failed the most the culture we have is like it's not necessarily about the best trailer the most views or everything that's working what we really get like excited about is like man i ran all these experiments and they all failed but because we ran them well i get the trophy so when we as a team celebrate it's because we've followed through with that process we like celebrate the fact that it didn't work and we learned why more so than a billboard that's popped up on the other side of the world it's not really about that um it comes back to what i said to you before we started around like the process is the podium for us so you know i i like to say like the only person who wants to see me win more than myself is the team and we all embody that like it's hard to describe that culture when you're not in it because it just looks like the results but when you're in it we're obsessed over like the process more than the results um so yeah it's a really it's a really special place for me there is no room for ego like it it trickles down from the top of like from the way execs work like i'm working with someone who's three times my age and has been in the game for like 25 30 years the best in the world at what they do and i'm a 21 year old with like velcro shoes on asking them questions there's just no room for ego it's all collaborative so it's strange for me as well because this is the first job i've ever had yeah when you think about it like from starting my business to this it's like my perception on what work is is so skewed whereas there must be so many places where you walk into the office you say nothing to no one you sit down you do 20 of the work you're meant to do and you leave at five not me i don't know i can't imagine and i i don't say that to to boast in a way but i say that when you find a place like that that empowers you in a way that what i've experienced it's um a special

His work on the channel has passed 12 million views and helped build an audience of over 400,000 subscribers, and in 2025 Forbes named him to its 30 Under 30 list for Media and Marketing at just 24.

They get into ego, his own and the ego that comes with being permanently embedded inside someone else's brand, the parts of working for a high-profile founder that never make it into the polished footage, and the reality behind building a career off the back of someone else's fame.
