In short

The hosts react to cold-calling scripts posted on TikTok, evaluating what works and what sounds scammy. They argue for opener/qualification tactics (problem-first, budget-freeze clarification, data accuracy checks) versus “too-good-to-be-true” offers and pushy meeting-closing.

Guests

No formal guests appear. The episode features Zach Thompson and other hosts reacting to TikTok videos, plus the “cold callers” and “prospects” portrayed in the clips (e.g., Donnie, Chris, Alia/Imani, Jack, Hubert, “Boss man”/tradesman-style caller).

Key claims

“Good news/bad news” can hook attention but may be delivered poorly; ask what a “budget freeze” actually means; avoid “like”/wrong-person assumptions by using orienting questions; “14-day free trial + performance pay + no price” can feel contradictory and suspicious; don’t rush for 10–15 minutes—explore the problem first.

Notable examples

AI receptionist opener; calm “budget freeze” qualifier; “is this John/Zach?” data-check opener; Prospeo lead-data pitch; trades/SMMA-style call offering 14-day trial, commission, and “no fixed cost.”

0:00Zach Thompson, today you're in for a treat because we are going to be reacting to salespeople on TikTok. Now, you don't have TikTok. What is TikTok? Exactly. No, I don't. I'm not even sure what it is. No, it's a Keisha song or something like this. But all I've done is I've typed in cold calling. We're going to watch some videos. We're going to react live. And we will probably rip some people apart and maybe give some alternative views. All right. Let's do it. Okay. Let me press TikTok. TikTok. See? It works here as well. Come on. 89 ,000 views, the best cold call opener of all time. And you've got a good head of hair.

0:45He has a young me. Hello? Hey, is this Donnie? Yeah. Donnie, this is Owen. You want the good news or the bad news? Who is it? This is Owen. Owen? Do you want the good news or the bad news, Mr. Donnie? I want the bad news. Bad news, Donnie, this is a cold call. Good news is this is a well-researched cold call, and if you give me 30 seconds, I can explain how I can help you. You know what? I like your style. Go right ahead. Perfect. So it's pretty simple. We build AI receptionists. Why was he so mad about it? What do you mean? About his delivery? Yeah, he was so mad about the delivery of it. I like the good news and the bad news.

1:31I don't think it was delivered. Do you know what it reminded me of? I'll tell you what it reminded me of. You gave me that cold call opener once. You know the one I'm going to say, where we were selling SEO. No. And you made me call people up. You can't die this kind of story. You made me call people up and I'd, let's do a reenactment. I'd go, hi, is that Zach? Hello. Yeah, it is. Yeah, who's this? Hi, Zach, I've got some awful news for you. oh my god what's happened i've just been on page one of google and i can't see you there oh why you call me saying that you bloody dick anyway yeah well go on break break it down what do you think give me give me some feedback what did you like i liked it good patterning trump nice hooky thing at the start good news or bad news people are probably going to be a bit curious go on what is it i was probably more interested in what he's going to say next because like you've done that bit to really get a hold of him.

2:32And so I just put in the comments here, immediately hanging up here, an AI receptionist. He's probably better off going in with the problem first after that. Not AI receptionist. But it's an interrupt opener. It's good. Hey, good. I liked it. Okay. So you don't know this about TikTok, but the best thing is, I pressed that button, alright, and another video straight away. So we know, Neo. We do. All right, Chris, you're getting a call. It's quite a long video. What do you do?

3:10Let's just do a little search of the CRM. Lovely. Chris, hi. It's Nia from my sales coach here. We haven't spoken before, so I wouldn't expect the name to ring a bell. I wondered if you have 35 seconds so I could explain why you thought that would be a good idea. Appreciate it. Got it. and can you help me understand because typically when um people tell me that there's a budget freeze it's either that there's like absolutely no spending across the business or it's just that there's a bit of a pull on the purse strings which of those camps is your business in chris fair enough well why don't i um connect with you on linkedin chris and we will speak again sort of towards the end of the year.

3:58Right, let's see. You know, I've had a real-life cold call from Nia before. And actually, I don't like to give compliments out, I remember it as one of the best ones I ever had. I remember what office I was in as well because I've had quite a few offices in my time. I think she sounded... Hold on, I think the people that have started watching this for cold call advice will want to know what office you were in. so I was in the current building I'm in but I've had a few different offices the one around the corner and no I think she's so calm collected tone's lovely very strong tone and I like the question around I like the qualifying around budget freezes what does that actually mean like giving her a few options as well anything you'd add really really nice tone very personable from the out i imagine she's a pro interest i imagine she sounds on all the calls quite it's like not upbeat in a in the false way probably in a way where it's quite hard to say no to giving her the time and then obviously is is skilled within that as well and then good follow-up work as well using multi-channel connected to you on LinkedIn so I'm within your feed I didn't hear the budget I didn't hear the budget thing but is it that there's a budget freeze on or is it just that you're having to be more careful of the purse strings do you know what he said he probably said we don't have the budget so let's say for example he said we don't have the budget yeah so budget's like often a bit of a knee-jerk reaction the example that i used to give when i was doing more training is no one's planning to crash their car but if you had to like get it on the road again you would budget aside you're not planning on it i've not like got money aside to do it so often like the budget thing is this it can be i'm not saying in this case but it can be a sign of you have missed the problem.

6:13It's quite symptomatic. So we might be talking about sales training. Oh, we don't have any budget for sales training at the minute. I recently got into the problem it solves. Yeah, exactly. What did you do when you smashed your car up then? Where did you get the budget for that from? I think I just... I think someone just told me that there goes my no claim. I don't know. Right, you want another one? I like this TikTok where you just press a button and then it's like Hi, am I speaking with Alia? Yes. Hi, this is Imani calling from Chai Fin. I'd always be careful of saying is this Alia or is this John?

6:50Because then it implies that you don't really know them, that you're not familiar with them. So you just want to say John. You know about him? I know about him. Stupid haircut. That's like a shark. I've read some bad things on social media about this guy. Don't know whether they're true or not, but... Sexually. Sexually. Sexually. That's the thing about sales trainers, they hang out in the combat zone when it comes to sex. I should know. What does that even mean? The thing he said then, right, of don't use the... And I've heard this before. Don't use the like. That's not blah, blah, blah, Jack, is it?

7:32We live in a world where data is tricky. It's a tricky thing. And, you know, like, that's not Zach Smith, is it? Zach Smith, Zach Smith. There could be lots of Zach Smiths. It's a common name. So actually ringing up and starting with, that's not Jack, is it? As a good opener to get a yes, to get my data qualified quickly. Rather than, like, doing my big opener and my pitch, and then all of a sudden they're like, oh, you've got the total wrong person. So actually, I'm going to go against this guy. If I was ringing you, Jack, I'd say, that's not Jack from We Have a Meeting, is it? so I can quickly check, is my data right?

8:07And you'll go, actually, it might be. So he was, I think he, I think he, I definitely think he was against all of it. But is that, is that, is that, that's what the lady was saying. What you said there, just for the audience as well, that's not, it's a different frame, is it? That's not Zach from we have a meeting. Is that Zach? That's a yes, you're orientated question. No orientated question, blah, blah, blah. It's a good switch. All right. Anyway, Google him on Reddit forums. You'll find out the truth. What data do you use to have as many sales conversations as you do at We Have a Meeting? Jack, what's the answer?

8:47It's Prospeo. I'll stop you there. It's Prospeo. Oh, thank you. And there's a reason why we use Prospeo, Jack. What is it? They are... It's because it's 98 % more effective than any other data provider on the market. and for those people that are wanting to cold call and make a difference right now there's a little link in our bio but if you are struggling it's prospio that's p-r-o-s-p-e-o prospio get on them and start making some bloody calls and i know what you're thinking i hope prospio is better than their relationship haha prospio wow the youngest cold caller in the uk Fucking construction

9:55It's quiet. Yes. Right. All the way from generating the leads for you to qualifying the leads, you know, to make sure you don't deal with any time wasters. All the way to booking them in right into your calendar for a quotation. So essentially, we handle everything for you. Does it sound interesting to you? How much does cost? The thing is, we don't have a fixed cost. We charge based on performance. So that way, if you don't win, we don't win. If you win, we win. Does that make sense? Yeah. Okay. Average cost. I can't really give you an average. However, if this does sound good, could I book you in for a quick 10-15 minute call to discuss this further?

10:29Because I can't really give you a price price right now. So, can we book that call in? So, the thing that I want to do is I want to book you in for a quick... Right, okay, let's break that down. Go on, mate. That was a tough one. I struggle with that top boy voice, you know. Boss man. I owe you for this and foremost, boss. Credit to him. Good lad, picking up the phone and getting on it. I bet he sounds like he's running his own business as well. I'd probably drop a bit of that. I don't know. It's funny. I can talk myself out of it as I'm doing it. If he's ringing like Pine Packer Chris Tradesman, maybe it's going to really work really well for him.

11:07So I can actually talk myself out of like the slight. It's like it's good to be relaxed, but it's like almost like slightly too. Do you get what I'm saying? Yeah. What am I trying to say, Jack? So he keeps saying, you know what I'm trying to say? and does that make sense? I actually feel like it's quite patronising at points. I feel like we have this thing of like, if you're called plumbers, you want to be a bit more on the level of like a plumber, yeah? But I actually don't think like, personally, I don't like the idea of calling any stranger boss or like boss man. You know what I mean? I think it's just, the big thing was like leading with the 14 days free trial, right?

11:48Yeah, that was interesting, wasn't it? But actually, it's performance-based as well. So now I've got a contradiction. So my negative bias, which is searching for negative information to assume that actually something's wrong with this, it's too good to be true, 14-day free trial, and I pay on results. If it sounds too good to be true, boss, it probably is. It probably is, boss. Boss. Yeah, exactly. So probably a bit too, like, you've got to be careful with, like, the colloquialisms, like meaning talking like very local unless you're talking to very, very local businesses. But if I'm in like Croydon and I'm bringing other businesses in Croydon it's probably quite cool to sound like you're from Croydon.

12:31Yeah. But trades people, construction businesses it's quite varied, the type of persona and obviously there's size and whatever. So just be careful of that. The leading with the 14 day free trial probably cheapens the offering probably more so than you think. The 14 day free trial thing is a, it's like a concession, like it's like something to have in your back pocket. You don't need to lead with it. And then talking on a, I've heard this before, and I think this is something that people talk about on LinkedIn. This style is very like hinged on, I just want to get the meeting and then I'll sell at the meeting.

13:06Quit 10, 15 minutes. Yeah, yeah, exactly. I literally did a post on this earlier. Like it's just, if that is your goal, you might as well not even bother cold calling. just fucking spam emails that's the thing if you're just desperate to get you've got someone on the phone now that's willing to have a conversation why do you need a quick 10 15 minutes and don't get me started on there is no price what do you mean what do you mean yeah i think that's that again i wouldn't trust that but no for this young man as well on the phone this this this fellow the youngest cold caller um there was a bit in there where he was like is very, very quiet for us at the minute.

13:43Now, I'd be thinking that means you've got no money. Yeah. So is this even a good use of my time in the first place? But I think so many people just, like you say, you can play a different game of I'm just desperate to get results and that way you see it. Like if you type into YouTube live cold calling, I booked eight meetings today, eight meetings booked in an hour. Yeah, what are they though? Like what is a good meeting? Not all created equally, are they, mate? no not all good meetings are created equally give me a number between one and seven four right this is a cold calling script we use to get 12 clients in under five months this is for local home service businesses but again you can tailor it to whatever type of niche you're targeting the reason i think this worked well is because we use a problem statement in the pitch versus this is what we're selling so i'll just you know pretend to call a local home service I'm too much sholking.

14:40Hi, Rob. This is what we want. Hello, is this the owner of Eagle Building? Yes, sir. Fantastic. Well, I do apologize for this late call. I know it is past working hours. That's fine. Talk to me now. Yeah, my name's Jeronimo, and I have a business that helps construction companies in the area. We're just wondering maybe I could steal 20 seconds of your time. If not, hang up. That's all good, mate. What do you do, quick quick? So what we're looking to do is partner up with one construction company in Reading, take care of their social media client process. Am I right in saying you get most of your work through word of mouth and through referrals?

15:09That must be like a move. That must be a sales trainer's move because you've just, you've seen the same path. Am I right? Yeah. What is it? I get you to admit that you get all of your work through word of mouth. Why? I remember first seeing that in Jordan Belfort's Straight Line Persuasion. Right. Am I right? It's very long sharp. Yeah, it's like, yeah, exactly. the idea is is like i i his thing is you want to be seen as the expert immediately in like what they do so i'm going to give you a thing and then you and then say like have i got that right so it makes me like i understand you but the issue is you get counterfeit yeses don't you with sales you're just like yeah i'll admit to anything just to get you to fuck off let's keep going Geronimo.

16:28After that 10 days, 310 days. What do you expect? Give me a number. So if you want to work on percentage, if I get a job, I'll give you a percentage. Commission. That's commission basis. We do commission basis as well. Like, all I'm saying is we will present this to you in a 10-15 minute call during the weekend. You know, when we both have more time, maybe it's not so late. Try on Sunday, if you don't mind. Sunday early? That's fine. I didn't catch your name, sorry. My name is Hubert. Fantastic, Hubert. And we'll speak on Sunday. Remember, there is no commitment. I just want to speak to you 10, 15 minutes.

17:00That's right. All right. Thank you. I appreciate you, Hubert. Cheers, cheers. Cheers. Right. I mean, we are in the wrong game. All the comments of people saying, this is great.

17:11I mean, there's a world. It's called SMMA. I don't know if you've heard of it. Social Media Management Agency. Marketing. Marketing. Social Media Management. Marketing. Marketing Management. One of them things. it's just you can't be making it it just feels too good to be true and actually the business owners business owners that have been around the block you think i remember when like somebody said they'd work for us for free the first time what do we say yeah get in the van let's go let's do it and then over years people saying i go no because it's going to take so much time energy like all the stuff that goes into it to to hand over the keys and get someone trained up they're probably like preying on a bit of like sunk cost fallacy aren't they well we've done it for 10 days we've not got the results yet but we are going to get the results blah blah blah and then you're like well a little bit of start you know maybe give it a bit more i think if the people have made it this far at home right notice something here we've played two calls that have had the same approach and from the other side it went exactly the same as well from the other side it was someone going well how much does it cost well after that how much does it cost come on how much does it it it feels quite scammy from the start it's like is is that the place you want to start from the back foot i promise you if you can get someone instead to talk about the problem they've got why they're motivated to fix it why they need to fix it and spend a little bit more time on the exploration.

18:45You won't need to do the 14 day free trial thing. You won't need to like oh let's just steal 10-50 minutes of your time. None of that will happen. All that bit will just naturally look after itself. Why steal? Why does it have to be quick? Why can't we have 30 minutes in the diner and we can do deep chat? I used to love deep chatting. I've got a question for you. Have you enjoyed TikTok? I won't be rushing to it. And you won't be rushing to it. That was TikTok. That was TikTok. Wow. That was TikTok. Yes, it was. Anything from you before we jump? Yeah, a little task if you can, Jack, if you're happy with it.

19:30Please. Obviously, we gave away 500 pounds last time. And I'm going to do the same task again this time, but just for one person, so the first person to get there. Very generous. So you're going to have to like this video, comment on this video, something about Jack. And then I want you to find a episode with a guest and comment on something about that guest that's complimentary, please. And once you've done that and we see that you've done that, I will be in touch to transfer you 500 pounds. You're going to Venmo that money, baby. Enjoy yourselves. Venmo. Take care. Bye bye. Cheers.
