Disruptors Podcast Episode Summary
Episode Title Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi On The Battle Against Dark Energy, and How To Achieve Self-Mastery
Episode Description In this enlightening episode, Rob Moore engages with Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi, founder of the Shaolin Temple Europe and author of *Shaolin Spirit: The Way to Self-Mastery*. They delve into human emotions, identity, the pursuit of happiness, and the complexities surrounding suffering and well-being.
Key Themes and Discussions
The Nature of Happiness
- Inherent Suffering: Suffering and tension are integral to the human experience. Master Shi emphasizes that true well-being arises from navigating these emotions rather than seeking a constant state of happiness.
- The Delusion of Happiness: The pursuit of a singular, unchanging state of happiness is seen as unrealistic. Master Shi argues that appreciating joy often stems from experiencing its opposite—suffering or absence.
Inner Work and Self-Mastery
- Inner Work: Master Shi stresses the importance of understanding and mastering oneself, as many individuals become trapped in societal labels and external expectations.
- Freedom of Choice: Patterns of behavior often dictate one’s choices; breaking free from these patterns is crucial for conscious decision-making.
The Role of External Influences
- Media and Identity: The discussion touches upon how external influences, such as media and technology, can distract individuals from being present and understanding their true selves.
- Victim Mentality: Master Shi critiques the victim mentality that can arise from focusing on external circumstances, advocating for personal responsibility and proactive behavior.
Presence and Physical Activity
- Mindfulness Practices: The significance of physical activity and breathing exercises is highlighted as a means to cultivate presence and self-awareness.
- Detachment from Identity: Master Shi discusses the importance of not overly identifying with roles and labels, suggesting that true self-understanding comes from recognizing one's essence beyond societal roles.
Financial Perspectives
- Addressing Financial Unhappiness: In the context of financial distress, Master Shi suggests that individuals should focus on actionable processes rather than succumbing to victimhood.
- Planting Seeds for Growth: Consistent efforts in one's career can yield results, emphasizing the importance of actions over wishful thinking.
Mental Health and Human Emotions
- Reframing Suffering: Master Shi argues that societal views on mental health often misconstrue normal human emotions as disorders. He suggests reframing suffering as a natural part of life.
- True Identity vs. Thoughts: The episode addresses the distinction between one's self and their thoughts, encouraging listeners to recognize that they are not defined by their mental experiences.
Disrupting Unconscious Patterns
- Disruption as Growth: The term “disruptors” resonates with Master Shi's mission to help individuals break free from unconscious patterns that hinder personal growth and authentic living.
Best Moments & Quotes
- "Searching for that one state called happiness right now is not possible."
- "The more you hold on to the patterns that are driven... the less freedom of conscious choice you have."
- "If we would feel well all the time, what is there to change?"
- "The main work is the one that always follows you."
Conclusion This episode offers profound insights into the nature of happiness, the importance of self-mastery, and the necessity of confronting the complexities of human emotions. Master Shi Heng Yi's perspective encourages listeners to engage in deep self-reflection and promotes a path to authentic living through understanding and inner work.

There is a program, there's an algorithm. As long as you don't get hooked by the thought, everything is okay. Why no uniform now? Big change as well happening in my life. It doesn't matter where you go and what you wear. It is the essence that you are carrying inside of you.
0:27Shi Heng Yi:What would you say to people who are unhappy because of their financial situation?
0:33Rob:This is the delusion number one.
0:35Shi Heng Yi:The result is going to come regardless if you want it or not. How would a Shaolin master fix the UK?
0:46Shi Heng Yi:Is there a dark energy in the West right now?
0:51Rob:Whatever makes it dark and whatever makes something bright for myself I'm very convinced it is what you are putting with your thoughts to it the way of how you are relating to whatever you experience so by let's say nature itself nature doesn't make a difference between dark or bright good or bad it is what we subjectively add on top of it. So should we in the UK watch the news? If you base your life and your life quality a lot upon what's happening around you, then this might be a way of trying to prepare yourself what you imagine is going to come. but this is exactly where i feel like it is an encounter which is at some point just not gonna work this whole idea of trying to control the the surroundings in order to make you find a place in it so this is exactly what in the past many times has been talked about stop pointing for the changes outside of you and trying to figure out how to adjust what is happening.
2:23Rob:It is called, it's an inside job. And inside job, why do we call it like this? Because the reason why in the first place we are aiming for some change or even aiming to try and regulate anything ultimately has always one goal to make us feel well. to make us feel well. If we would feel well all the time, what is there to change? Apparently the reality is, I don't feel well because just some decisions have been taken that seemingly have an effect on my well-being. But now we just make the next step. Why is it called the inside job? Because it is what you feel. whether you're happy whether you're sad whether you're depressed whether you're motivated all of these where does it eventually really take place you can be sitting here and being extremely motivated but it is happening in your reality in your being so it's not it's not me who is motivating you it is your inside energy that you either learn to cultivate to nourish to create it to maintain it or to lose it and so this is the whole idea what makes it really interesting so how do we find this balance between understanding what is going on around us and what is really that I have in my hands to do something about my life if I'm not satisfied with it.
4:14Rob:Yeah.
4:15Shi Heng Yi:Okay, so I want to come back to the UK and the news and the media and social media. But I want to go here for a moment because I feel like there's this slight delusion with humanity that the purpose of life is happiness and that we can always feel well or the goal is to feel good. But I've found frustration to be a very useful emotion. I try to control anger and not do anger because I think that's a behaviour, but the emotion before it, if something went wrong that shouldn't have gone wrong, generally I'll feel frustration and that frustration will get me to sit down and figure out a solution.
5:01And the solution is often better than had everything been fine.
5:06Shi Heng Yi:So as a humanity, are we naively chasing something that is just one part of being human, i.e. happiness? Okay.
5:18Rob:I know already by now speaking out, many people will misunderstand me. many people might say i am dreaming or whatever whatever it is but after living now meanwhile my 42 years on this earth growing up actually in europe in germany it's not that i haven't seen things what i now with 42 years have come up for myself What is my best way in order to navigate myself now through everything that I see in the world? Yeah. Do wars exist? Of course, wars exist. Does injustice exist? Of course, injustice exists in this world. Okay.
6:11Rob:Now, the chase for happiness is something that I very quickly gave up already. and now why because number one is as soon as you have a concept and an idea about what type of state you would like to maintain in your life number one is okay you have the assumption there is that one state that is able to be maintained throughout what throughout birth until death okay just taking now natural observation there is not a single day that stays the same the sun rises the sun sets the floods are coming the tides are the tides are coming and they're leaving the clouds are coming the clouds are leaving esoterically sometimes people say you cannot step into the same river twice what do all of these things point at apparently that change is something it's inevitable inevitable means there is not one state that even the nature is maintaining throughout its its presence let's say so how come a human is wishing for something to attain, to achieve, that in front of us, the big, great nature doesn't even display to us.
7:50Rob:So yes, searching for that one state called happiness right now is not possible. What is alternatively the observation that I have so far? There are changes and there are so-called, I would say, opposing forces that are necessary in order actually to appreciate the happy moments. When do you appreciate happy moments the most? When do you appreciate the sunlight the most? After you know what is the darkness. when do you appreciate your partner or somebody that you that you like very much when you know what is it to miss them when there has been distance between you and something so if something is present throughout all times it doesn't create something that we human beings are thriving on which is tension we humans are thriving on tension like very simple examples that i just contemplated a few days ago with one of my teachers he literally asked me there are so many amusement parks right in this world what is so amusing in like in a way you know the free fall towers the roller coasters in real life why would you expose yourself to the feeling of freely falling why would you expose yourself to like such high speed roller coasters and risking the danger of you know what happens with high speed the difference in amusement park is you know that there is a safety net.
9:48Rob:You know it is made to call up the adrenaline but at the same time because it's based on amusement there's also the safety nothing's gonna happen. So we have used this as humanity knowing that this exchange of like excitement but then still having safety. We use it because it gives us something. The only difference right now is that when we leave the amusement park and enter into real life, that real life seemingly is so real that we forget that it still is based upon the same principle of tension. And why do I say these things? Because ultimately it is perspective. What is my perspective of talking and observing the nature?
10:48Rob:Sometimes it rains, sometimes the sun shines. Means for me, sometimes I walk through this lifetime and everything works out in the way that makes me feel pleasant and sometimes i meet people that throw things and project things upon me that doesn't make me feel pleasant but welcome to life yes the only thing that painful difficult moments are at the same time allowing us is actually to transcend something that in the ancient teachings many people and many traditions talk about it what is the what is the reason actually that we suffer or that we want to change something it is because we are identifying with a wrong sense of self
11:55Rob:we humans are identified with the wrong sense of self and like i said yeah people will think I'm crazy but I'm here to like speak my truth even me for a big part of my life was thinking I am the creator of the role that I'm presenting to the world so many people if they look up my name they're gonna find master she hung yi then you can look who is master she hung yi there is a specific way of dressing a few years back you found the surrounding where most of the videos for example were taking you find it is placed on like what nowadays is known as a temple surrounding embedded so what is it i'm doing he's practicing martial arts all the time and he's meditating the whole day so apparently there is like an image, a role, a persona that is being created there.
13:02Rob:And now to make it very simple. Exactly. It is a role. It is an identity that has been created. But the way of how I speak nowadays, the way of how I dress nowadays and what I know nowadays, it is not how I was born. and there is this nice saying which for me is like brings it straight to the point we were born with nothing and at some point we're also going to leave with nothing but in between we are doing everything in order to attain something get something identify with something be someone and it is exactly this creation that ultimately is suffering because we forget I came as nothing I'm gonna go as nothing but in between of those two states I'm trying to become someone, to become something that in essence you are not.
14:28Rob:And this is the big delusion. This is the delusion number one. Because I am not Master Schöng-Li. I am not even a German citizen. I have a passport that says nationality German. You know, so it's in this world, you are being labeled, you are being put into categories. You need to belong somewhere. And this is where I see where the greatest potential lies.
15:11Rob:Two, sounds strange, but it is what I really feel what makes you light. what makes you light, taking the burden off your shoulders, is to stop investing your lifetime into becoming someone that you will never become. Because there is an essence, there is a perspective about you that was there in the beginning, that is going to be there at the end. And whatever you do during this lifetime, it's not gonna change it. The only thing that happens is that for a great majority of your walking on this earth you are chasing after something which is an illusion and afterwards you will start to realize that whatever you started to try to attain, to build up to fill somehow a deep longing inside of you a deep longing for your identity you will realize whatever you have done is not going to fill up that hole and you're just going to even start to attach even more to whatever you think you have created and then spend the other part of your life being fearful of losing everything that you have built up and created in the first part of your life.
16:47Rob:People more and more want to become someone, something that they are just not. Okay, so. I'm sorry, it was a lot.
16:58Shi Heng Yi:You don't have to be sorry. And I've got about 932 questions from that, which I want to come back to. So I'm going to park that. how would a Shaolin master fix the UK?
17:18Rob:It's not only the UK, it's something I observe. I observe when I was driving with a bus right now over here, it's super simple to see. It's the technology. It is all the gadgets that we have nowadays, how we are using them. So what is happening? Instead of, you know, it's really nice for me, let's say, as a tourist to come to London, if you have not grown up here, and literally just sit in the bus, see the bus driving, and look around like London itself, like the UK itself. It's nice, I can understand why people like to be here in the UK. But the reality this morning was, you know, everybody's looking here.
18:09Rob:everybody's maybe even checking things that has that has nothing to do with the streets of London it has something to do with the business they have in Dubai it has something to do with the business or whatever so the idea of people not knowing consciously anymore where are you spending your conscious thoughts. And a big hindrance is the usage of all of this modern technology. So number one, what would I do? And this is what I did. Physical activity. Physical activity, meaning this is where you see me, why I continuously in the last 11 years Just do simple things. Go out in the forest, use your body, inhale, arms lift up, exhale, arms move down.
19:05Inhale, exhale.
19:07Rob:Then if it's too boring at some point, inhale, exhale to the front. Inhale back, sit down. What is the point of such simplicity? Number one, your thoughts, your mind is not fluctuating around what do you want, what didn't you get yesterday, what problems are gonna come tomorrow. It is simplified in I inhale, I exhale, I have this body, I feel the air, I am present. my mind is exactly where my body is i'm present
19:50Rob:so this is number one step whatever it takes in my case what i tried in the past years was the simplest way to get people present is bring the people where their body is how do you know where your body is your body can only be there where your breath is this is where all the breath work and why breathing exercises in this type of communities has also grown a lot also thanks to for example Wim Hof why the breath because there is not existing the breath of the past and there is not existing the breath of the future. There is nothing more direct in the here and now than the breath. So this is the starting point.
20:46Rob:Presence. What is not okay for you right now?
20:53Shi Heng Yi:Nothing is not okay for me right now Everything is okay right now
20:59Rob:This is how I also feel But now Don't be in the present Maybe look at your phone Look at your calendar Look at whatever Whatever it is 158 things are not okay right now It's easy to then Find something which is not okay But again this is your life and in a way it's like my life and so I just observe if I truly ask myself inhale exhale be present and go and say okay what actually is not okay about just being silent calm and sitting here what is not okay about it then there might come something like it's boring or I want more excitement but already that is a good observation of at least knowing okay there are some things apparently you are chasing and the thing is like this this is the greatness in a way that is existing in our lifetime that you are free to do and chase whatever you want to but everything comes with a price simple you want excitement no problem but in the moment you think that excitement is supposed to be a state again that that you imagine to be stable so the whole life is supposed to be exciting it's not going to happen it's not going to happen because excitement goes let's say hand in hand with its opposing force which sometimes is nothing is happening.
23:07Rob:And so this is ultimately how, meanwhile, I just try to navigate my life. It's not about saying I want nothing. I just know. To want something has a price.
23:23Shi Heng Yi:Right now in the UK, there's a little bit of a cost of living crisis. and what would you say to people who are unhappy because of their financial situation?
23:39Rob:It's really difficult, yeah, but let me try to break it down. It is impossible. It is impossible when you are planting the right process. that this process is going to somehow bear some fruits. Just to point it out, then I come back. If from this day on, every day you just do 20 squats, 20 squats, for one year, after one year, it's not a question anymore. did you want it and wished for having strong legs or not? Because of the process that you went through every day like this, the result is going to come, regardless if you want it or not. Just to make sure so there is something based on actions that has nothing to do with wishful thinking anymore.
24:45Rob:Coming back now to the financial crisis. it is possible to receive and earn money in this world yeah it is possible the question is are you planting and are you embedded in the right process right now in your life to actually be able to access this source one day or not so and if you are right now not finding yourself that you are in this process well then ask yourself why then ask yourself why is it really that you think everything is so difficult outside that makes it impossible for me to even get a chance is this let's call it i would just say i don't want to like discriminate anyone but a little bit victim mentality yeah victim mentality meaning everything is is like bad you are the one who's suffering because you're being suppressed but okay but victim mentality definitely is something that in my observation nobody has who right now somehow has made his living what i see in the people who somehow made themselves be able to earn some money is they had an idea and regardless of how hard it was, they kept believing and kept going and not view themselves as needing to ask for something.
26:21Rob:I'm not asking for things. I'm trying to be the active creation of what I want to become or get. And so the crisis of people are looking for money, okay, Why are you living right now the daily habits, the mental state of allowing yourself to grow out of the mentality that you think something is lacking in your life? I'm not a specialist in this, but to break it down, this is what I would say.

27:48Shi Heng Yi:The agenda, the details, the dates and the speakers are all at the link robmore.live forward slash money. Why is the monk now wearing a Rolex?
27:58Rob:First of all, because people portrayed on me the monk image. This is number one. And second of all, because I just liked that timepiece. Because at some point in my life I asked myself, what is it that one day actually would really remind you, remind me? of what all of this is about and actually every moment that i'm living
28:34time it's time time is ticking yes and at the same and in the same moment
28:43Rob:now this is a pretty human thought but i asked myself what is it that one day i maybe can pass on to my son. The experience that in case this watch witnessed while father was going through a lifetime. It is this. Nobody is ever going to give you time back. And that is like the simple reason why I wanted to set like a milestone also for me to just keep myself remembering all the time it doesn't matter what you do time's running for everyone besides the fact of I don't like to buy anything in order to buy it twice you know and regardless if somebody now

29:37Rob:has any experience into like the time pieces but quality wise I would say there's a reason why they maybe ask for this type of prices and in order to know I do that investment one time and it stays for me the rest of my life and even beyond my generation I'm absolutely happy to know that I worked for that money and also now invest it into something that remains that has that carries the value by itself for me this is the only reason and why no uniform now? I told you that today, 16th of February, the so-called year of the wooden snake in the Chinese astrology is coming to an end. Wooden snake, I make it like really simple.
30:31Rob:The last one year for some people, even two years was a great, great time of shedding off things. just like the snake sometimes does. When something is getting too old, when something, it doesn't suit you anymore, you need to slowly, either consciously, willingly get rid of it. And I felt that not just in what type of life situation I'm finding myself in right now, big changes were happening in my life, but also for the identity, the role that I have invested my lifetime in, in the last 36 years. It's also coming, I wouldn't say to an end, but to a transformation. and one thing that i realized a lot is the type of projection that is being that that is happening in the world and from the beginning i always stood for one thing for you to develop yourself for you to let's say find the strength that some people think that i'm representing for them it doesn't need you to travel anywhere you don't need to shave your head that's why my hair is also growing you don't need to wear a uniform just to look like somebody someone you don't need to change your location let's say going into a temple which is like secluded in order to do the main work the main work is the one that always follows you it doesn't matter where you go and what you wear it is the essence that you are carrying inside of you and if inside of you you carry debris and if inside of you you have untamed demons and if inside of you you have unresolved what nowadays is called traumas or issues it doesn't matter what you wear it doesn't matter where you travel it's going to be with you so instead of focusing and making yourself pretty and nice and flawless us on the outside.
33:17Rob:It's the inner work. It is the work to sit with yourself. And for many, this day to day definitely would be like a statement of like, look, all these years before he wore the uniform. Yeah. We thought he is a monk and now suddenly he's sitting there like, I know.
33:43Shi Heng Yi:So will you get criticism for casually dressing instead of...
33:48Rob:Oh, I'm sure. I'm sure. It's not criticism. It's not understanding. It is some bubbles are going to burst.
33:57Shi Heng Yi:I mean, we all have opinion, don't we? So you use the word projection. Is that not just opinion? We all have opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Exactly.
34:09Rob:Exactly. But opinion is something that you can, that in my view, is nothing to base your life upon. Because there are too many. What I'm aiming for is something that, let's say, we all have in common, which has nothing to do with opinion. it is factual it is the truth what is the truth because we're all filtering through perception aren't we one of my masters he he not warned me but he told me always be careful this is not it is not coming from me right now in a way it's coming from me but to your question, what is the truth? Let me first give it in a conceptual way so people understand. When I hear the word truth, truth means it cannot be farther divided into anything, whether it's true or not.
35:24Rob:Meaning, if there is something we would call the truth, it must be here right now. There cannot be like a time where truth suddenly is absent. There cannot be a location where truth is not present. If it's true, it's there all the time, you cannot take it away. Which now, just to give you like the shortcut, in ancient times or in ancient cultures is regarded as the one. number one cannot be farther separated one there's everything inside okay the hard way of of saying this is people used to go into temples and then for example they pray to a statue because apparently this is like representing something holy.
36:21Rob:But they disguise the shit of the dog which is lying on the street.
36:31Rob:Now there are methods and there are teachers who say exactly like this. What is the difference between the statue that you regard as holy and the shit that you see on the street? If there is that one truth, How come the holy statue is truth but the shit is not truth? Let's put it in another way. How can the shit appear on the street if God would not have allowed it? Nothing is happening in our experience on this earth without the approval of God, if you want to say it like this. The difference is, that one doesn't smell nice. The other one, you have projected your fantasy upon it. What is the truth?
37:24Rob:Whatever appears, it's there. This, it's there. What now is happening is, and now it is being added and altered. by opinion, by perception, by ideas, by thoughts, by discriminating thoughts. This is what's happening. So what is the truth? It is what you perceive in the absence of thought. And now there is a nice way how to tell you what is it that you can perceive with the absence of thought. Like I said, it's a very ancient, traditional way. I just showed you. Yeah, it's this one.
38:14Shi Heng Yi:This recent budget should warn you that your pension is not safe and secure and they're coming for your inheritance. Do you even know how much is in your pension or where your pension is invested? Add to this the recent inheritance tax grab on your pensions and the risk of a market crash. You probably didn't know this and I didn't until recently, but physical gold can be added to your pension pot. Gold is inheritance tax-free and has grown 700 % in the last 20 years. You probably know from my content I'm investing heavily in silver and gold, and that's why I've partnered with Direct Bullion. Myself and Nigel Farage are brand ambassadors, and Direct Bullion can help you with gold to protect and grow your pension.
38:52Shi Heng Yi:I buy my gold and silver from Direct Bullion, and I don't earn any money on any purchases of gold or silver if you buy direct from Direct Bullion. So if you go to robmore.directbullion.com, you can get a great price on your silver and gold and you can get the pension gold investing guide completely for free. As you know, I don't do many strategic partnerships. And when I do, I do them with people who are credible, who've been doing it a long time, who invest in things that I invest in too. And gold and silver's going wild. I'm investing heavily in gold and silver, and I recommend you check out robmoore.directbullion.com.
39:38Rob:This is how my master used to teach me. I asked him, Master, what is the truth? He doesn't speak. He just does.
39:53Rob:People, huh? Now maybe some audience asking, what was that?
40:02Rob:If I do this, you perceive it, yes?
40:10Rob:Try even not to perceive it.
40:15You can't.
40:17Rob:It doesn't matter who's in this room, even like the viewers right now at home. I do this. You sense it. It's happening. It has nothing to do with opinion. It has nothing to do, does it make sense? it has nothing to do is it good is it bad it is happening it is extremely direct of trying to very in a direct way point at something that this is it that's it and if you start to realize so I don't have to do this. It's naturally happening. And what is it that is not naturally happening? Following and cycling through thoughts. Yeah.
41:23Shi Heng Yi:So, you earlier said the words, you are speaking your truth. Yeah. And just now you said the truth.
41:36Rob:I try to be diplomatic in order to not offend people.
41:42Shi Heng Yi:Well, I seem to offend people, but the way I see it is as long as I'm speaking what I believe to be right and true, then that's just their opinion and their decision. It's not mine. Yes.
41:58Rob:So how has your truth changed? my biggest so far so far let's call like this wake up is like this no i also said i grew up in germany went through the schooling system tried to prove myself got my diplomas did my master thesis whatsoever so in order to fulfill on the one side some expectations my parents had where do my parents have this expectation from from the world that they were embedded in in terms of this world is made for you to prove yourself when you prove yourself you're gonna get some recognition with this recognition you also get some benefits from it which might be of financial
42:49Rob:financial i don't know how to call it now gain benefit benefit exactly and with this benefit you might invest into having a safe and happy life okay so understandable of course why my parents and this whole system is trying to propose this upon humanity and so many years i followed up exactly on this learning more developing more creating things trying to control life, trying to create life how I envision it to be. Until moments started to appear simply right in front of my eyes, reminding me, there's nothing for you to control. There's simply nothing for you to control. There's nothing for you to control.
43:50Rob:Whatever you're facing in this lifetime is simply the consequence of what you have somehow put out into the world by yourself, by your own thinking.
44:08Rob:And for example, one reason why I decided now, I don't want to go in uniform today unless it would have been a training session, then it is okay. this world has enough has seen enough public figures that seemingly represent something whether it's holy, spiritual or what not but at the same time it's also not there people live like double split lives this fakeness of representing something that in essence you're not So now without pointing the fingers outwards to other people, of course I also had to ask myself, what is it that I'm nourishing in the moment when I continuously show up everywhere where people see me in the rope?
45:04Rob:Even so that I did not have the intention of fooling people or anything like this, but I understand that people see, no, people believe what they see. and fact is nobody sees that after I do my training I also have normal casual wear on after I finish my training I go out with my friends eating and so I felt that this project is this projection this having expectations about me that I'm supposed to be like this how they see me on them on the screen all the time It just reflected also upon how I viewed myself. And I felt, no, no, no, no, no. This is not how I want to live my life. What I learned, I learned.
45:53Rob:What I'm skillful in, I'm skillful in. Whatever I wear or don't wear, if somebody doesn't like it, it's not my problem. And this type of not wanting anymore to feed more into the illusion. there's already enough illusion existing in the world I don't want to be one more part that nourishes an illusion and the thing is like this I mean I became known in a way as Shaolin Master but even inside the Shaolin community I don't have many I don't only have friends let's call it like this out of all different types of reasons. And so for me, it's just, okay, what is it that is bothering me so much about it?
46:51Rob:It is because I felt that I dedicated like 36 years trying to represent in the best way what Shaolin meant for me. And what did it mean for me? it meant for me that these are methods, these are things that you can learn to benefit your life regardless whether you live in a temple, in a monastery, be a monk or not. So from the beginning I was always a friend of opening up and making the very clear differentiation. You don't have to be a monk, you don't have to change your religion, You don't have to be spiritual in order to simply learn, first of all. Inhale, exhale, get more in touch with your physical body.
47:44Rob:Become therefore more present. Once you are more present, you become more aware. When you are becoming more aware, you see more what goes on inside of you. When you see what goes on inside of you, you have the real path of real change. So this was what I wanted to do. And the Shaolin community, who still said, no, it's about physicality only, it's only about this, this and that. Sorry, it's not my opinion. I never intended to become a Shaolin master only to teach people how to punch and to kick. I'm sorry. We're living in a world and you're still busy with figuring out how to teach people how to punch and kick.
48:36Rob:Sorry, what is this? This is not my word. To know the methods, how to punch and kick hard, to know the principle, what is it eventually that actually gives you this ability to change the way of your moving is the same principle that makes you change the ways and the depths of you changing the depths of yourself. This is what I always tried to emphasize and bring into the world. So, and in order to now let the Shaolin people be Shaolin happy, they can continue, I have no problem with that. And I continue with what I feel like is benefiting myself. And hopefully if somebody feels some resonance, benefiting themselves as well.
49:39Shi Heng Yi:You mentioned earlier about the identity of who you are not. And you chase becoming and building an identity of self. in the first half of your life and then you spend the next half of your life trying to hold on to it. And this causes tension in me because I hear truth in what you say. My mission is to help as many people on the planet get better financial knowledge. I don't think our current education or financial system teaches good practical ways for us to build personal wealth. I think there's enough money and resource and opportunity in the world in its abundance for us all to be able to have a wealthy life.
50:30Shi Heng Yi:The word wealth originates from the word wheel, which means well-being. And being well-off financially helps with your well-being. But for me to get out of the world, there's plenty of fights that I'm going to need to take on. And I've developed an identity as an entrepreneur. And that serves that mission in my perception. But I'm definitely holding on to the hundreds of properties I have. I'm holding on to all the books that I've written. I'm holding on to this identity. I realize the tension that it creates. But I feel like I'm doing a meaningful mission. And I don't know what I'd do if I woke up without it.
51:10Shi Heng Yi:I'd feel quite lost. So when you say what you say about, you know, and I feel you and I feel like maybe I'm holding on to an identity that isn't the true me. but I do feel like I'm doing God's work through me. What would you say to someone like me?
51:26Rob:We all are different, but somewhere we also are very the same in some essence. So this is the strange part. What I referred earlier as the truth, there can only be one. Sometimes in a nice picture, it's the truth is being seen from the top of the mountain. But already there it starts. The pathways towards the peak of the mountain is not the same for everyone. The only thing that along the way that you still, that I feel like you just still ask yourself is, what is there left for you? what is there left for you after you have committed and let's say invested all your lifetime right now in trying to help the world what is there eventually for you whatever it is that makes you one day close your eyes and be ready to do the transition whatever it is i regard it as then this is your past i am not here you know this is important i'm not here to tell anyone how to live their life i am not in your in in your environment i don't know what you in the past already went through i don't know what challenges you are facing right now how can i like give any type of advice how to live their lives i'm not doing this but i see there are patterns that all humans have and this is a truth which is simply there the more you hold on to the patterns that are driven that you are driven by which are coming from everything that happened in the past, the less likely you're going to have a conscious and free future ahead of you.
53:42Rob:The more your life is based on patterns, the less freedom of conscious choice you have.
53:52Fact.
53:56Rob:our new AI friends that are going to come. There is a program. There's an algorithm. They repeat. The big question is if they would ever start to derive new actions and create new ideas not on something that they have done from the past. But then there is no difference anymore between all our new AI friends and the human. But so far, the big difference is exactly this, that we know when we are in a pattern and we know that we can get out of a pattern. It's the choice between living an unconscious life and living a conscious life. and becoming conscious means to know to see actually what are my own behavioral patterns that make me feel the way of how i feel right now that something is for example being triggered why I give the same type of response in what is it that always repeats itself.
55:19Rob:And I think this is now that big challenge. Why? I just mentioned it because this is the reason for people to understand why did I name one of our programs that we offer self-mastery. Because I really believe that is the way. Not mastering the government. Not mastering anything outside of you. Mastering and understanding what you in essence are. How you have been conditioned by living on this earth. How we have been influenced by outside impacts. by understanding what is it that has shaped us to what we are nowadays. And once the picture becomes clear, I think new perspectives and new opportunities start to arise exactly in that moment when the unconscious has become conscious.
56:30Shi Heng Yi:In the UK right now, there's a mental health crisis. the national health service in the uk is quite overrun underfunded and um there's lots of people getting signed off with mental health issues the data suggests it's a lot higher than it was and um of course people are being medicated for things What would you say to the UK, the National Health Service or anyone that believes they're suffering with mental health issues, but maybe they're just normal human emotions? I start off a little bit bigger.
57:19Rob:What you're asking, what I hear you're asking me or how I would like to translate this.
57:29Rob:How to liberate the people from their suffering? Whether it's mental suffering, whether it's psychological suffering, whether it's physical suffering. How? By putting the perspective right,
57:48Rob:what place suffering takes in the life of a human. This is number one. And number two, who is the identity that is suffering? And this is something which I feel is going to take many, many years and a lot of understanding, but I still say it now in this podcast with you. Figure out the possibility that you are not the body and you are not your thoughts. It sounds so unreal. It sounds I'm going crazy. I still say it and I know the impact it's going to have.
58:35Rob:The thoughts are something that arise and sometimes they disappear. Fact, right? So sometimes just a thought pops up, but in the same way, whatever thought you have, it also never stayed. So you don't have an influence actually when a thought comes and you actually don't have an influence when it truly disappears.
59:01Rob:But in order for you to realize that something has arrived or something has left,
59:11Rob:something must be there before the thought.
59:17Rob:Something must be there before your thought arrives and from which the thought is leaving again. It is that very nice sentence. I'm not sure if you ever had the opportunity maybe to hear, but it's a great teacher. He's a sad guru. I'm sure you heard about him. And he really sometimes puts it really, really nicely. He said, whatever you regard as my, my car, my house, my body, my thoughts, whatever you regard as my. Cannot be me. Whatever is yours, your business, your car, your body, your thoughts, yours cannot be you. You must be first in order to have yours. Me must be first in order to call it mine.
1:00:22And this is the shift.
1:00:24Rob:This is the very, very essential point of realizing. But if the thoughts come and you have no filter anymore, then what you think, you think you are. What you think, you think this is what you need to do now. What you either need to do or not do. so you are driven by thoughts so and if this is your reality you get crazy for sure you get 100 you will have mental problems
1:01:12Rob:because i don't even know you just look it up maybe scientifically how many thoughts per day a human maybe like just have. If this is what you identify with, it's chaotic. No stability. Always fluctuation. No safety. Nothing you can build upon. Because it's just chaos sometimes. The only way to find somehow your place something that feels stable, something that feels solid is if you have a perspective that there is something about you let's call it like this, it's stable and the rest is fluctuating there's something which is stable the rest is fluctuating and as long as I don't identify or attach myself or my master used to tell me as long as you don't get hooked by the thought everything is okay when you get hooked by your thought you lose the stability you lose yourself you lose your real self this is what's happening so now back to the question what would we do educational programs to really let people reconsider the view upon their life whether they are identifying with a phantom or they rather learn to start identifying with themselves as something where not too much has to be done there anymore because God doesn't bring you on this earth incomplete.
1:03:15So I think of the amazing artists who suffered for their art.
1:03:21Shi Heng Yi:I think of the amazing musicians who suffered for their music. I think of the world's tallest buildings who scientists and architects and people who built the buildings suffered. Some died. and I feel like whilst I hear and I appreciate and I'm trying to understand what you're saying I feel like there's an element of humanity is that we are we do strive we do suffer we do form identities that that build things and make things think of the amazing bridges all of the you know the human architecture for us to progress as humanity so I feel like if we all just completely detached from identity and didn't have this tension of pain and suffering, we might lose all the great things about humanity.
1:04:13Okay.
1:04:14Rob:To take this illusion in a way, or maybe this misunderstanding way, I express to you how I, how I, what the perspective is I'm trying to take for myself upon this lifetime. Does it mean I'm going to be free of suffering? Absolutely not. It's just for myself, I feel I have another perspective at least how to deal with the suffering when it comes. And it is going to come, this is for sure. So now, ultimately it's just like this. In this world, I feel there is no way as a human being to walk through this lifetime with the ups and downs. is just a part of the game, the ups and downs. The only difference is when you feel there is no alternative other than being the fluctuation of the waves.
1:05:18Rob:It is very exhausting. It is very exhausting for me. The only thing I'm saying is there is a way for you sometimes to detach the up and downs are still happening but because of your detachment in those moments sometimes you can minimalize a little bit the emotional impact that it has on you but regardless of what you have to go through the ups and downs that is it it doesn't mean you detach and go into the forest no exactly this idea of running away from the world is not the way it's not the way like this idea sometimes it's so funny in the moments when I was wearing like in the past my uniforms and then talked about the same topics the comments were yes of course because he's living in the forest without problems that we face in the daily life then you get comments like this So, but what I'm saying is, yeah, and that's exactly not the way.
1:06:30And this is why right now I look like this. To tell you there is no way in running away anywhere.
1:06:43Shi Heng Yi:So Britain's pretty famous for complaining. Brits love to complain. And personally, I just don't think it's productive. I think we all probably need a bit of a release. but how can you help Brits complain less?
1:06:59Rob:There is something positive, which maybe also makes Britain be Britain. If all nations would be the same, would have the same values, what they stand for, the same way how they view things, we wouldn't call it, it's a different nation. So I'm not here to change anything about the British people. It's just that if you at some point realise for yourself. Actually, my complaining all the time really doesn't bring me anything other than I make it more difficult for me actually to enjoy the rest of my lifetime. If you come up to this conclusion, then you do something about yourself. But I'm not here to change, Britton.
1:07:45Rob:Fact like this. But personally, it's true. So instead of telling me what went wrong yesterday, how would you like it to be tomorrow? Tell me. factually how do you envision it because then I can still help you that we do it in the way of how you imagine it doesn't matter how much you complain about tomorrow what you want to do about it now what's your most brutal life lesson you can lose everything in a glimpse doesn't matter it's it's like it's not you doing this The wake-up call of trying to control this lifetime. This is, so far, I would say, the biggest life lesson.
1:08:37Shi Heng Yi:What's a secret you've never shared or a story you've never told?
1:08:43Rob:I wouldn't call it it is a secret, but it is something that is just like publicly I never shared it in a way. I would actually in the past looking at my life I would call myself I'm like a high achiever or at least aiming for yes and which in some way also this is maybe also one reason why I actually ended up also in this podcast yeah because something started to to grow and then I got to know and all of this I invested a lot of work because at some point I also aimed for it in a way but all of this aiming to prove myself aiming to outperform aiming to deliver it comes from lack it comes from lack it comes from something very very deep embedded from childhood let's call it like this and where things are just starting to connect so yeah and that simply means people are always happy and and in a way astonished by when somebody has created something huge and they see like oh how beautiful yeah but they don't know the other part they don't know what is it that allowed all of this beauty all of this light right now to be out there and factually speaking there's a lot of shadow which in the first place was there and everybody who like really started building up something strongly i'm almost convinced i mean you probably know that here with uh with stephen bartley you know they all everybody everybody who somehow nowadays is like famous, is well known, built up something huge, they have something very deep in their childhood, 100%.
1:10:51Shi Heng Yi:And is that therefore not the upside of the dark side? Because if there was just love and bliss as a child, there wouldn't be the void to fill.
1:11:02Rob:Is it human nature? It was the human nature that because of all of this endurance and of suffering, me, I found a way to compensate and fill that hole for some time until the realization comes that it can never be filled with outside creation.
1:11:30Shi Heng Yi:But why would you want it to be filled? because then the, you know, they say about it's the journey, not the destination. So surely the paradox is you think you want it to be filled, but actually surely you wouldn't.
1:11:46Rob:In a way true. Why would you want it to be filled? Because unless it is filled only by yourself, you will be running. You will be running. That is the most simple and clear answer.
1:12:06Shi Heng Yi:I think virtually all greatness, they're running. David Goggins, he runs ultramarathons and he's running from pain. I think we're all, like you said, I think, surely one of the great things about humanity is the great things we can achieve and it inspires other people to want to do the same thing. Tiger Woods, you know, and his relationship with his dad. Andre Agassi, the tennis player, his relationship with his dad. Is that not the fuel?
1:12:40Rob:Like I said, it is for sure the fuel for a big majority part of your life. But at some point you will also, I realize, you cannot maintain it. You cannot, you cannot, you cannot maintain it. because there will come some time your body you yourself will become not so performant anymore in order to still fulfill all the tasks that right now you're doing and so what you're ultimately ending up with is you're going to sit at your chair and are with yourself and if in that moment where you realize yes in the past you could fill it up to make it not feel so deep but there will come the moment where you will sit with yourself and there is simply no place anymore to run there is no more recognition that you can like take in order to fill it
1:13:40Shi Heng Yi:and then we will see what happens can't you not sit with yourself and feel good about who you are and then get up and go to work and make things happen and then come and sit down and think about all the things you achieved in the day and don't be too hard on yourself but just hard enough to want to improve. Can you not embrace all sides?
1:14:02Rob:Absolutely.
1:14:03Shi Heng Yi:I mean, that's what I try and do.
1:14:05Rob:Absolutely.
1:14:07Shi Heng Yi:You know, a little bit of suffering. Like you said, suffering is inevitable.
1:14:10Rob:Yes.
1:14:11Shi Heng Yi:So if it's inevitable, don't try and run away from it. Just try and handle it in the very best way. Be productive through it. I find that if I'm suffering a lot, I tend to be more kind to other people because I can feel my own suffering. I don't want other people to feel that suffering. So I've tried to find some positive benefit in it.
1:14:31Rob:Yes, but not everybody is like this. Sometimes people, when they suffer, they want other people to suffer, which is like not really nice. No. But, you know, all of these questions boil down to one and the same thing. how conscious have you become for yourself in this lifetime? Ultimately, I would say it's exactly this. If people don't see it, they don't see it. When people start to see it, that even this is in a way a pattern, they try to break free.
1:15:06Shi Heng Yi:What would you say is your biggest mistake or regret?
1:15:09Rob:I need to think too long for it. I've got time. because in the context of that I would have never arrived where I am right now with everything that happened in the past, with all decisions that I have taken in the past, I'm not sure if I would even call these things a mistake or a regret. They were probably not pleasant and maybe I thought about it afterwards. words still a few months or years but ultimately they all led me to the conclusions that i'm in a way trying to to sense for myself to now change my life in the direction of what i regard as worth living so no there's nothing to regret because i find mistakes a paradox because every successful person you talk to, successful, says they make so many mistakes.
1:16:08Shi Heng Yi:And then every successful person you talk to says they made no mistakes and they have no regrets. So that's a paradox.
1:16:20Rob:I failed a lot of times. That's why you succeeded. So this idea of, it depends on if you regard like failure and mistakes, if this is like the same category but i think what makes like people sometimes excel and what is it that makes them stand out is because they're able to create a way or create something that hasn't been there before whether it's a solution or whether it's an answer that before just wasn't there and how come that somebody's able to come up and create something that hasn't been there before, it's because he figured out and tried out all the things in order to not repeat it anymore.
1:17:10Rob:In order to not repeat it anymore.
1:17:11Shi Heng Yi:So in other words, messed up a lot of times.
1:17:14Rob:In a way like this. Messed up meaning you tried, it didn't work. Or it didn't work the way you wanted. Yes. Until what happened. until you didn't repeat something anymore, had something out of the box, something you haven't thought about it before. Why not before? Because you were busy, first of all, with making all the mistakes. But after making all the mistakes, there was nothing else left anymore than switching something. And suddenly there, it came.
1:17:53Shi Heng Yi:I think about these things a lot. So I try and observe things in daily life. So in the last few years now when you open a bottle, the top doesn't fall off. It stays attached. Something so simple. How did we not think of that for the last however long we've had plastic? I have a laptop bag that I carry and I have a wheelie small carry case. and now the laptop bags have a compartment which slides over the handle so the laptop bag doesn't fall off when you're pulling it. So simple. I love rock music and sometimes in rock music or metal music, they detune the top guitar, the string, and it's detuned.
1:18:47Shi Heng Yi:If you think of Nirvana, it's out of tune. So somewhere someone had a pursuit of something And then a revelation whether it was serendipity Or it was just intentional work or a mistake Like penicillin was a mistake It was an accident And I think about these things a lot And I feel like if you're moving towards somewhere And you just keep going And you're playful and you're curious But also you're persistent you come up with the success in the end, no?
1:19:24Rob:Sorry, that was a bit random, but... I'm not sure if you can prepare for success as such.
1:19:36Rob:But when it's supposed to happen, it's going to happen, yeah. And if it happens, it certainly is something because you didn't stay standard.
1:19:51Shi Heng Yi:Okay, so you did something non-standard, unconventional.
1:19:57Rob:If you only take everything like this is how it's supposed to be, so you took everything like the standard that the world maybe wants to give you, but then nothing ever new is going to be created. So all of the things that you mentioned, somebody said, let's break the rule. Who tells me that it is supposed to be like this? Who says that? And I think it is a great power. It's a great power, yeah.
1:20:28Shi Heng Yi:And on that note, this show is called Disruptors. So being disruptive is definitely not standard. I want to thank you for being on the show. We've been trying to make this happen for a while. I appreciate your time, your travel, because I know you're traveling a lot. What does the word disruptive mean to you?
1:20:47Rob:For me right now, very importantly, and maybe it really fits to the type of conversation, I'm really happy to be part of maybe helping people to disrupt the unconscious patterns that are running too many lives. So the reason why I'm here and why it maybe fits well is disrupting what is unconscious.
1:21:16Shi Heng Yi:And the majority of your work, you said self-mastery as a course you have, where can, should people go for those?
1:21:23Rob:so first of all uh if somebody is really interested in the physical track uh training of the martial arts of shaolin kung fu there are two very very great masters i actually regard them as my shaolin uncles it is shifu yanlei and it's shifu yense from the shaolin temple uk here in london okay no need to travel anywhere you have two of the greatest shaolin masters really from the 34th generation right now here in the uk this is the one thing and if you want to find something about me uh i'm happy there is on the one side a book that i published i think now half a year ago it came out in the uk in march it's going to come out in the us which is called uh shaolin spirit a way to self-mastery where you also get a little bit understanding how do i come up with all of this stuff yes and otherwise i think social media will will give you what you might be looking for
1:22:29Shi Heng Yi:what's the main social media platform you're on and what's the the handle the username you can just check shaolin.online yeah on all the channels yes and just one final thing because you said everyone was stuck to their devices on the bus in london social media i mean it's how we met it's how we get our work out to the world but of course it's somewhat of a curse especially if you've got young children what are your views on social media there are two ways how to use it
1:23:04Rob:to consume or to let's say share or nourish something I think this is the choice between you being aware of yourself by you using this right now Is it consuming you? Are you consuming? Or are you sharing something? Or is it sharing something with you? Ultimately for what? To make you have a better, conscious, present life. That's it.
1:23:34Shi Heng Yi:I've really enjoyed this. I've been very present in this moment. I haven't thought about all my life problems. I've been in my body. So thank you very much.
1:23:41Rob:Thank you very much.

From the publisher
Prepare for intense enlightenment, as Rob meets She Heng Yi, the founder of the Shaolin Temple Europe 歐洲少林寺 and author of the book Shaolin Spirit: The Way to Self-Mastery.
Together, they explore the complexities of human emotions, identity, and the pursuit of happiness, discussing the notion that suffering and tension are inherent aspects of the human experience, and suggesting that true well-being comes from understanding and navigating these emotions rather than chasing a constant state of happiness. Master She Heng Yi focusses upon the importance of inner work and self-mastery, arguing that many people are trapped in a cycle of identifying with external labels and societal expectations
BEST MOMENTS
"The reason why in the first place we are aiming for some change... ultimately has always one goal, to make us feel well."
"Searching for that one state called happiness right now is not possible."
"The more you hold on to the patterns that are driven... the less freedom of conscious choice you have."
