0:35Benfica have a two-man advantage. If they can get a goal, they head into the top 24 and their season in Europe will be extended. Jose Mourinho tells them to just go for it, might as well send his goalkeeper up there. He'll go, he'll go, he'll go, he'll go, Levento, no, he can see that!

1:01Oh, what a night it was for Benfica, we're going to be the Champions League. Classic against Real Madrid, I don't speak Portuguese, I do not need to. Brutal, it's saying in the Portuguese pressing marca, I do speak Spanish. It is saying here, Mourinho giving them a lesson, a lesson from Mourinho. What a night it was. We are still talking about it here in the FNF studios. That's Kei Murray, Shaka Hislop and Stevie Nichol once again. Here in the studio, we're joined today by Sid Lowe and Jan Agafjort as well to look back on the night that Benfica got themselves into another little chance to have a go at the Champions League this season and have some major consequences for Real Madrid who fell out of the direct qualification spot.

1:45So I'll start with Sid Lowe. I think I can start with Sid Lowe. He's got a needy dog in the corner of his house right now. Is he there? Yes, he is. Tell us what the reaction's been in Madrid to yesterday's results. The reaction's been lots of barking and whining. Oh, no, sorry, that was the dog. I've actually had... My son's just crept in and carried the dog out, So hopefully I can give you the reaction. The reaction has been one of obviously amazement at the way that it happened. But also the focus, despite that extraordinary ending. And from my point of view, at least, you know, the story, of course, is a goalkeeper scoring a goal in the 97th minute.

2:22But the focus in Madrid has been about an analysis of Real Madrid and where they're at. And that sense of the improvement that everybody thought they saw. And I include myself in this against Villarreal at the weekend was absolutely absent in the Champions League in midweek. Now, of course, look, I think at times we over-dramatise not getting in the top eight. It's just another round of the Champions League. And it's another round that Real Madrid, in theory, should win. They might even face Benfica again. If not, it would be Bodo Glint, of course. And so it's not a crisis yet. But it's in the context of everything that's happened over the last five or six weeks.

2:54And in that sense, it feels like a really very significant setback. Yes, absolutely. So that's the big story from Real Madrid. And we'll get more to that in a minute. But given that we've got a goalkeeper in the studio today, it is time to talk about what Trubin did on the night at Chaka. It's incredible. Listen, on the one hand, Benfica thought they'd gone through, then all of a sudden late, realising that they needed this goal. Goalkeeper goes up. And I have to say, it's an incredible header. It really is. Centre-forward's a header, isn't it? It's a hell of a header, I have to say. To credit to him.

3:28Ordinarily, goalkeepers go up there, and I'm very guilty of this, and you're not quite sure what to do. you're a little bit worried if the ball falls to you and that's happened to me before but yeah obviously well executed and in a round of football that's supposed to be kind of drama free given while we were discussing the format a couple of days ago that ending is just storybook. Yeah I think Sid Stog might be a Madridista because I can definitely hear a whining like that. And let's get word from Jan Agafiotov. Your reaction to what we saw on the Benfica side of things Jan, unbelievable right?

4:01Yeah, it was fantastic. And I mean, we all tried to, we were all working on Champions League last night and we would try to cope with everything that was going on. And when you saw the scenes on the bench, back in the days, I was involved something in a Bundesliga where they had to find out on the table that we needed another goal. And the same thing happened over with Benfica. They just realized, well, it's not enough to beat Real Madrid. We think we can hang in there with a 3-2 win and then they kind of get signals into them and they need a goal. And of course, Mourinho. This is... Mourinho's been away for a while with his big, big successes.

4:44And then he kind of gets his goalkeeper up and through been with a header. I agree with the boys. I mean, that's header. I mean, that is... Steve Nicol, that is John Tosak. That is fantastic. That is great to go back to one of the good oldies. Yeah, I see he's nodding along there. But one of the amazing moments, Sid, and I know you were talking to our producer about this yesterday, was the fact that Trubin's gone on to do that. And just before that, he didn't even know that his team needed an extra goal. Yeah, this is my favourite bit. For what it's worth, can I just have a slight moan here? I want a new rule in football.

5:24And that new rule in football, I want automatic yellow card for every goalkeeper who catches a ball and for no reason whatsoever throws himself on the floor. You haven't had to dive to catch that ball. Get up or it's a yellow card. Yes, yes, yes. So there you go. So you get Trubin go to ground, hold on to the ball. He thinks he's wasting time. He thinks, isn't this great? We're free to up. And I love that little bit of footage where it pans the director's box. And Rui Costa is effectively saying, what's this idiot doing? We've got to score another goal. Nobody knows. Mourinho evicted after the game that he wasn't sure at first either.

6:00Suddenly he gets the message, boots it out of the pitch, free kick, and then up he goes. Mourinho says, yeah, go on, get into the area. Do you know what I thought? Honestly, Kay, I mean, you obviously know this because you've covered Real Madrid and lived in Madrid for long enough. When it was 3-2 and Benfica had a free kick, honestly, I thought this is where the free kick gets cleared and some Real Madrid player runs up the pitch to an open goal and makes it 3-3. the fact that it was 4-2 and the way he takes it it's just brilliant So we can just see what the guys thought there of yellow cards for the time wasted, Stevie what are you thinking of that?

6:33Absolutely, 100 % Yeah, it's ridiculous just falling on the floor I mean, imagine if a player just fell on the floor They do that all the time They don't get away with it What if our co-workers made a career doing that? I mean, Emi Martinez John Pickford I mean, all of them, they don't... There's a lot of them that do it now. Shaka, Shaka, I know you're standing up for the goalkeepers, but I don't need a new rule for that. That is just like, what I'm doing is just ridiculous. There are rules for ridiculousness. You can educate them a yellow card. I'm with Sid's dog here. I hate everything you all have suggested.

7:12Me and Sid's dog on the same page. You cannot legislate that. That's just part of the game, man. you're making the most of what's available to you. Yes, absolutely. I did love what he said after that. What are you talking about? I didn't know what we needed. I just saw the coach waving. I've never scored a goal in my life. To do it against Madrid to save our season is a dream. You couldn't write it. No, you couldn't. That is the understatement of the day, isn't it? You score a winner or a very massive goal for your club with a header. You are a goalkeeper and then you say, it's like a dream. Well done, son.

7:48I mean, that is the understatement of the night. I wanted to get to Mbappe's disallowed goal with you, Shaka, because it's a bit reminiscent of Trinidad and Trebek against Bahrain. That wasn't you in goal, though, then? No, it wasn't me. This hasn't been given for some time. Not only going back to 2006, you could even go further back. I remember there was one incident with Ronaldinho who did similarly and the goal was disallowed. It's got to be at least four years. George Best in the 70s. I was about to say it's at least 40 years since I know that goal has not been allowed to stand. Stevie's going back 50 plus.

8:25I don't know why. We all know as players, we all know you can do that. But somebody might want to tell Real Madrid TV, Sid, the reason we bring this up is because they are incensed about this moment. Are they? Real Madrid TV are incensed? There's a five. Surely not. I am shocked. I'm absolutely shocked that Roundup TV are incensed about a decision that's entirely correct that's gone against them I don't know what's happened to the world one thing I will say here is I don't think you should disallow these goals I think it's just a massive act of killjoyism to disallow these goals I think it's clever, I think no one's in any danger he's not hurting anyone I think it should count I actually asked a Spanish referee about this last night a former Spanish referee and I kind of had this little complaint and I said to him, come on, this should be allowed I know the rules say it shouldn't, but this should be allowed.

9:14And I said, you know, otherwise you would lose one of the great, famous goals in Spanish football history, which is Raul Tamudo did this in a Copa del Rey final. The goalkeeper had it in his hand. Raul Tamudo sneaked up behind him, headed it out of his hand and scored. And the goal did count. And what this former referee said to me was, they changed that rule in Spain precisely because of Raul Tamudo scoring that great goal in the Copa del Rey final. and of course that for me was the perfect evidence that basically referees are looking for a reason to ruin everything. Right, here you've got this great goal, you've got this wonderful moment in the Winter Cup final and the referees sit around and what do they think?

9:48They think, yeah, how can we make this rubbish? How can we take away this really fun moment? Tell you what, let's ban it. Sounds to me like everybody hates goalkeepers, to be honest. Yeah, yeah, the protection of goalkeepers annoys me. I mean, they get out on the pitch, they've got the biggest goals in the history. Poor Ops, Jack. The biggest gloves, the biggest gloves is Armstrong. Armstrong went on the moon. They're walking out like this. They're allowed to do anything. They get free kick on any situation in a one-to-one. And when they want to have a bit of time off, they lay their whole body over the ball, and there are no follow-up consequences.

10:26And now they throw the ball up in the air, and Mbappe is the most intelligent player, take the ball away, and then they have a rule against that too. Oh, come on. and you want to call yourself football players? I actually do feel as though Shaq has got the right to reply here because I feel like they're all ganging up on you, to be honest. I'm not sure there's a need to reply. No need. I'm not ganging up on him, dude. I'm with Shaq. I'll be honest. I'm not sure there's a need to reply. Even that highlight, if you look at Rodrigo, who's in shot, he knows it's not goal. Rodrigo's reaction tells you everything you need to know.

10:56Now, to counter that, so then what's the option? If that's available, if players are allowed to do that, then as a goalkeeper, I now have to make sure and get distance between myself and the player just so I can kick the ball. And then all you have is two players running around the box chasing each other. Who wants that? The goalkeeper would have to kick the ball holding it with two hands. With two hands. Because he can't do it in one hand. They don't do it anymore. That's the reason. That's the reason. Hands all the time. What Trubin did hasn't been done since the 90s in the Premier League to kick the ball out.

11:35Not that they want to play out from the back. So this was so surprising for everybody. Oh, boy. Anyway. Give me Sid's dog. You know what? Sid, very few times can I say you don't make sense. But you don't make sense. No, no, no, listen. I'm 100 % in agreement that this shouldn't have counted because those are the rules. I just kind of wish it could count because it's fun when that happens. I think what would be even more fun, though, is that scene that Shaq has just painted for us. I love the idea of Shaq running around the penalty area of a centre-forward running after him, preferably to the Benny Hill theme music.

12:15It would be fantastic entertainment.

12:21Nobody wants to see that. One thing we did see was Jose Mourinho celebrating wildly, as so many were. We've seen him do it so many times as a manager with many a different club. We've never seen him apologise for it, though, but we did yesterday.

12:39I apologise to Alvaro Abelor for the way in which I celebrated. But Alvaro is a football person. He understood the moment completely. In that moment, you forget that it's Real Madrid. You forget that Alvaro is on the bench. You forget that Cendo and Torrente are on the bench. You forget everything. I asked him for forgiveness.

13:29that he's forgiven. That's for forgiveness. And it's definitely a special affection here, isn't it, Sid? Obviously, we've seen it before for Mourinho. He's not apologised for it. But then again, it wasn't against Real Madrid with Alvaro Abeloha in the dugout. Yeah, exactly. I really like the footage of him running up the touchdown with his arm around the ball boy. I thought it was great. And I think that's the way that you should be able to react when your goalkeeper's just scored a goal like that in the 97th minute. I think if you don't go crazy, then when are you ever going to go crazy? but you're right that the context of this is that Mourinho is very fond of a lot of people at Real Madrid, in particular Alvaro Abelho who has said repeatedly how much he was on Mourinho's side, how important he thought Mourinho was in changing the culture at Real Madrid, how closely connected he was to Mourinho at a time, and I'm sure a lot of our viewers will remember this, in which actually Real Madrid became quite divided in terms of the relationship with Mourinho and there were some within the squad who very much weren't on his side and some who very much were and Abolo was at the front of that.

14:28And so I think in that sense, it was Mourinho essentially saying, as he says quite clearly there, you know, this is Real Madrid, a club of whom he's still very fond. This is Abolo, someone of whom he's very fond. And he mentioned Cendo there, who of course is the matchday delegate at Real Madrid, a former player, a former fullback, who's still on the bench at Real Madrid. And so I think Mourinho was right to say sorry. And I suppose, as Stevie says, in a way, there is a reason to say sorry because no one likes to see the other manager do that. But to be perfectly honest, I think he's also right to say that Abelhoa would have understood it.

14:56Because when your goalkeeper scores in the 97th minute, of course you're going to go a little bit crazy. Yeah. Jan? Well, Mourinho is box office. I think it was brilliant to see him. I think it was fine of him to say apologise. I think he did that because he respected the people on the bench there. But I think that was brilliant. Let's get the emotions out. We remember in Old Trafford when he did that, the whole Old Trafford there on the line. So I think that was brilliant. It's good to see Mourinho. He's so a part of our game the last 20 30 years I think it's fantastic to see him there and happy that he's took that next step Now this was such an iconic moment that it even interrupted Portuguese news when it happened.

15:42We wanted to show you this

15:56So for you a goal to Benfica. So for you a goal to Benfica. There we go. You can understand a moment like that and why it would do exactly that. So that was all the happy side of it for Benfica who was celebrating. As for Real Madrid, it wasn't such a happy time and Alvaro Abeloa took the blame himself. I wasn't able to get the players to do what I wanted them to do on the pitch. The levels that I wanted them to play at. Like I always say, when things don't go right, when the team isn't at the levels we saw in Villarreal, the responsibility always and absolutely is mine. I'm responsible for this loss, just as I was against Albacete.

16:37I don't know if you were at this press conference earlier, but I'll repeat myself. I'm completely responsible when things don't go right, just like today, when we don't complete our objectives. Federico Valverde also saying after the game, it's the players who play, it's us who have to step up. So taking the blame on the part of the players from Fede Valverde, Jude Bellingham, he said afterwards Benfica had more fighting spirit. We have so much talent and players that can produce magic out of nothing. But if you don't do the basics, you'll be punished. Kylian Mbappe said it's not about tactics, it's not about us lacking quality.

17:18It's about playing with more desire to win than your opponent. It was a disgrace. Benfica could have been 5-1 up by half-time and nobody would have been surprised. They were so much better than us. We can't keep doing this day-on, day-off thing. It's not what champions do. It is done, but the players are taking responsibility here. Stevie, do you like to see that? Oh, well done. Congratulations for taking responsibility. An absolute disgrace, by the way. As a professional footballer, there can be nothing worse or anything lower than not just a couple of players, but the majority of them talking about how they didn't give enough desire or enough effort.

18:02That is the lowest. As a professional footballer, that is the lowest. And the way they're coming out with all this nonsense, it's almost like they're waiting on forgiveness. Oh, well, they're taking responsibility for not trying hard enough. I mean, seriously. Real Madrid. And you're trying to apologise because you didn't quite have enough desire. I mean, I'm sorry. As a professional, it doesn't get any lower than A, somebody accusing you of not trying, and B, coming out and actually saying you weren't trying. Don't get any lower. Three of the big hitters as well, Jan. Yeah, we saw that news break there.

18:41There was a priest sitting in the studio. It felt like there were only priesters at the game as well because it was just apologising, apologising, forgiveness, forgiveness. That was all going around. And Arbeloa, what was he all about? I mean, it was my fault. It was my responsibility. Sorry, mate. You don't have that breakthrough with your players. It's not your fault. It's a player's fault. I mean, was it two players sent off there? Yep. And that was nothing to do with the coach? So maybe it's time to say, well, you have to do something on the pitch. This coach is going out as well. and Bellingham, Mbappé and all these, that is, with all due respect, that is rubbish.

19:20Yeah, absolutely. And that takes us right back now full circle, Sid, to where we're finding ourselves in Madrid. As mentioned, that's three of the big names in this Real Madrid squad all saying pretty much the same thing after the game. Yeah, and I think you have to look at Arvaloa's comments in that context as well. Of course, Arvaloa is a coach who's taken over from Xabi Alonso and the Xabi Alonso era partly went badly because there wasn't really a connection with the players. And I think Arbeloa has been very, very conscious that one of the things he has to do is effectively put himself at the disposal of the players, is effectively protect the players at all costs.

19:54And so that's why you see him after the defeat at Alba Cedde and the defeat in Lisbon say, it's my responsibility. And yet it's also why when they go and win Villarreal and play pretty well, he says, these are the best players in the world. These guys were well up for it. They were really good today. They're the best. And we're just trying to get the environment right. And so I think his message has to be seen, I think, in that context of who it's been consumed by. And it's been consumed by the public, of course, but it's also been consumed by his own players. And I think the way the players responded last night was partly an awareness.

20:24I think it was partly the fact that, of course, they know that lots of people are looking at them because of the sacking of Xavi L 'Encern. I think one of the reasons why they got whistled by the Bernabeu in that game against Levante, for example, wasn't just because they'd been playing badly, but because of the perception that not only have they been playing badly, but they haven't been making an effort. And also the perception that they were the ones responsible for Alonso being sacked. And there was a huge amount of frustration at the sense of a lost opportunity in the sacking of Alonso. An opportunity to install a new culture, to install a structure, to install an idea and a philosophy of play, which couldn't happen because of that pre-existing culture of the players' attitudes.

21:00And I think the players know at the moment that they are more exposed than ever before. Even though there's a contradiction here, the manager who's come in has come in precisely because, in part they think that he is someone who will be able to reach the players and someone who will be able to if you like, make the players feel comfortable and happy with him in a way that didn't happen with Xavi Alonso The biggest problem is the president, because the players certain players know it doesn't matter what they do they're not going to get, they're not going to take responsibility, it's going to be Alonso, it's going to be Abelot, it's going to be the next guy, it's going to be the last guy.

21:37And as long as the president looks at the team that way, it's not going to change, because there's no reason to change it. All these players, Vinny's as safe as anybody could possibly be, but yet he's one of the biggest problems they have, but he knows it doesn't really matter what he does. He can sulk, he can complain, he can get the fans whistling at him, he can do anything he wants, and the president's not going to do anything. So how is the manager possibly going to be able to hold these guys responsible? Is that fair, Sid, that Vinny's one of the biggest problems for Real Madrid right now?

22:12Well, I think what's happened is that Vinny, Vinicius has become, if you like, the symbol of it. I don't think it's just about him, but I think, of course, he becomes a symbol of it. And at the beginning of this, and, you know, it's curious, really, to take a step back and look back on where things started to unravel for Xavi Alonso, at least publicly. Now, and of course, the answer to that is in the Clasico. So what should have been Xavi Alonso's best night as Real Madrid manager? Beating Barcelona in the Clasico, winning a really big game, when of course the previous two big games, they'd been battered by Atletico Madrid and battered by Paris Saint-Germain.

22:42And last season, they'd lost nearly all of the big games as well. So there was a real sense of that being a watershed moment we've broken through. But what happens? We're 15 minutes to go. Vinicius goes off. Vinicius goes straight down the tunnel. There's a confrontation with Xavi Alonso. And that's the beginning of the end. Not so much because, and this speaks to Stevie's point, not so much because Vinicius goes off and goes down the tunnel and is angry but because rather than reinforcing the coach's authority in that position nothing happened and of course what that does is it underlines where the balance of power lies now it's not quite as clear-cut as just saying players or manager because it never works quite as clear-cut as that but some of the group dynamics and some of the if you like the idea of power and authority what Stevie says is right is essentially there's a culture where the managers know that they are at the disposal of the players more than the other way around.

23:28Right, absolutely. Now, something else we did speak about in this segment to put a bit of a brighter note on things was Raul Tamudo in the Copa and that moment that Sid was discussing. We thought we'd show you a shaker. Sorry. That's brilliant. How is that brilliant? I love that. Brilliant. That's how you do. Brilliant. Brilliant. You don't hold the ball. So what's the next rule now, though? An outfield player, if the ball is one metre away, then you should have the back to yourself? I mean, come on, Xhaka. You're the most protected people in the world. I'm sorry, I take you back. That should be allowed.

Read the full transcript

24:09Exactly. I take that back, I'm sorry. I've never seen that before. It's fun, isn't it? Yeah, it's fun. At no stage does a goalkeeper have control of the ball when the guy headers it. But, Xhaka, I would just... because I would just want to ask you a question. If you throw the ball off and it's like 40 centimetres, it's away from your hand. I mean, the ball is not yours. Well, again, now, we get into specifics here. Let's keep in mind that this was... Look at this. Hold on. Let's remember this was way before the six-second rule and goalkeepers were allowed to bounce the ball as they do. That was allowed.

24:51Yeah, but you... See, if you allow goalkeepers to bounce the ball and throw it up a juggler, wherever, and you see that, yes, that's the ball under the goalkeeper's in possession, then it's in possession. No, you can't just change it on the fly because one person decides to be clever. You can't just change it then. Bashanka, how do you say, I mean, that is Harry Potter thing, that you try to get a thing coming to you without touching it. I mean, that's not your that's not your ball. You let the ball In control the ball and he's bouncing it now again The rules that the ball was under his control That's what's what the rules said at the time So I don't understand why we why we look back on something from way back when and change the rule Just change the rule and let two players run after each other in the box.

25:47That don't make any kind of sense. 26 years ago, Raul Tamudo, Copa del Rey final, 2000. And here we are debating about it on ESPN FC. Because... Real Madrid, Rayo Vallecano. Let's see what the Bernabeu have to say for Real Madrid on Sunday when they are back in action in La Liga. We will have you covered from 7.30am Eastern. Real Madrid needing a big win against Raul.

Be sure to go and check that out over on ESPN.com. And now it is time for the biggest storylines of one of our panelists tonight, and that would be Jan Agafjortov. Here is his top five storylines from the Champions League group play.

27:42Starting at five, Jan, Spurs. I'm starting on five with Spurs finish fourth despite PL struggles. And look at that photo. That was from yesterday for me. Look at this. They played Frankfurt. They look for Frankfurt away. Mwani back in Frankfurt. Scoring there. And must be a good day for Eintra. Frankfurt only conceded two. Normally they concede three. And here's Solanke. So this is a team that is terrible in the Premier League. And they're so good in the Champions League being fourth there. And it's like Clark Kent and Superman, this Tottenham team. I mean, we could add to that Villarreal as well.

28:17They are terrible in the Champions League. They go the other way. And then La Liga, they are good. But look at Tottenham. They were my fourth. And what about the fourth? Napoli eliminated. The reigning champion, Ponte, McTominay. And look at them against Chelsea. I mean, Pedro, it's a good goal. He's doing all the right things. Benneapolis, I mean, Maradona, he will be crying when he sees his Napoli team in Champions League. And Lukaku and McTominay, they are all out of there. And Conte, the great Conte, look at these results. Losing 6-2 to PSV. Nil-nil against Frankfurt in the Champions League.

28:57Sorry, Frankfurt, that is not good from Napoli. So, we go to my third. And that is, of course, Bordegliem. Bordeaux Glimm, the three last games out of the season. They beat Dortmund. Now, that's 2-2 at Dortmund. They beat City and yesterday. I mean, beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 with Scherrwold getting the winner. It's unbelievable result. And they say this is because of the cold. This is because of the AstroTurf. Well, check it out. This is not AstroTurf. And his temperature is not in minus degrees. fantastic border glimpse and they got a good crowd as all Norwegians are look at them nine of nine of 11 in the starting 11 Norwegians and look at these results I mind you 30th of November that was the last league game 2-2 Dortmund 3-1 Manchester City and last night 2-1 against Atletico Madrid so if we see the top eight I mean five Premier League teams finish in the top eight and there There are some pundits that I've heard saying that the Premier League is not as good as it used to be.

30:09I just realised they are not on the show today. I won't mention any names, but one of them played for Chelsea and he played for Celtic as well. And he got a famous uncle. But look at that. Five English teams in top eight. It's fantastic. Premier League has never been better ever. And then this, of course, there is only one winner. I mean, Trubins, we go back to the goalkeeper last night. Frederik Ausnes, of course, a Norwegian after Sheldrup made two goals, also a Norwegian. And look at this header. I mean, this is the best header we've seen this whole Champions League season coming from an Ukrainian goalkeeper.

30:52Fantastic goal on the story of the night. And Mourinho can celebrate. He can take all the honour he wants. But look at this. A goalkeeper scoring the best goal of the round. So that's my top five stories from the Champions League last night. Well done, Jan. Let's put it to Xhaka. Xhaka is the one who's used to doing the power rankings. I've got no argument at all. I've got no argument at all. All agreed stories. And again, whether we're debating about this Champions League format and whether it coughs up enough surprises, I thought there was far more than enough for us to talk about. I don't think Jan nailed it.

31:29Is he missing anything, Sid?

31:34Well, the number one is the number one and it will be the number one for the rest of the season. That goal will not be bettered. I'd love to think it would. I'd love to think we're going to get something equally crazy, but that goal will not be bettered. I don't think there's anything we're missing from there. I mean, I suppose you could. I'm surprised, Jan, that we've not picked up on Bolo Glynn getting another fantastic result. and doing it against Atletico Madrid and maybe having the chance to play Real Madrid next as well. So that's really exciting too. Yes, that's interesting, isn't it? Could be Bodo, Glimp, or Benfica.

32:04OK, we've been talking a lot about the format as well, not just the Premier League teams, and I think that was Brake Burley that it might rhyme with. I didn't call any names. I did not call any names. Yeah, I think it might rhyme with that. Stevie, there's been a lot of talk, though, about just the format in general, what we think of the new format, got the boys debating the other day, on a show that I was on. What do you think of the new format? I'm one of those traditional guys. I guess a lot is to do with my age. And when it was changed, I questioned it. But I have to say, you can't question this.

32:40I mean, yesterday was a fantastic day. I remember the last rounds of the old format, and there was barely a game that was actually of any importance. And so when you look at yesterday compared to what I've just spoken about with the old format, I'm sorry. If you're going to stick with the old format then your mind's closed because I think the new format 100 % is working great. Sid, do you hate change? Do you like the new format? I'm a bit like Stevie actually and to start with it didn't seem to me to make a lot of sense. I thought conceptually the idea of having a league table when you're not playing everyone, of it being structured like this, didn't completely convince me.

33:28There's elements of it that I'm still slightly doubtful about. But yesterday's final game was fantastic. And in that sense, I was won over by it. I think one thing I would say is that I feel like we should possibly take a step back from allowing ourselves to believe that the whole format is great because the final day was great. I think it would be unwise to assume that a goalkeeper scoring an amazing 97th minute goal like that to send Benfica through doesn't necessarily mean the whole format is brilliant and that without that format that would never have happened or that this has happened because of the format.

33:58It's still a goalkeeper scoring a header. That's still amazing and that doesn't necessarily happen because of the format. I think there's one or two other doubts I have. I think there's a slight... I'm not quite sure how to express this. I think there's a slight myth of jeopardy. so there's all this talk about jeopardy and wow a big team might not get through and I think it's a little bit of a myth I think we sell ourselves the illusion of jeopardy so for example in Spain all the discussion was about oh my goodness Ronald you didn't get through well they did get through they're just playing another round of the Champions League another round which by the way they'll probably win another round which they would have had to play before anyway so I do think there is a slight risk of us allowing ourselves to believe that not finishing in the top eight is somehow wow, wow, you're out.

34:41It's not you're out at all. It's just a knockout round of the Champions League, which you will probably win. So what I mean by this is I'm not saying I don't like the format. I think I'm starting to warm to it. I think I probably do like it. But I think we probably shouldn't allow ourselves to believe that it's more dramatic than it really is, if you sort of mean. And I think if you're a big club, you have to do something horrendously wrong to get knocked out. But I think we should allow us to have that drama Sid because what we do know whatever model they will find the richest club will be at the top anyway so let's at least have an illusion that something could happen and let's have a go at it and when we see now there are three or four big teams in that bracket too that's in there and I love that and I like that there is excitement.

35:34I love to reading tables and this is the ultimate table for us. I mean, we have something called Eurovision Song Contest in Europe and that is the only thing that can beat this table. But the only thing that I think is funny, I think that is funny with this, is that the draw, when they just do this and then suddenly you hear this out and then something happened. I mean, the weakness of this system, if you go through some of the draws, there is, of course, teams that have had a much, much easier path than some of the other teams. But at the end of the day, the best teams will win the Champions League.

36:12The richest teams will be in the semi-final. And let's just hope there will be one or two great clubs that can at least survive a bit longer. The good news for you, Jan, is there will be a draw tomorrow in Europe. It will be a Champions League draw to find out who's facing who next. This is where we'll find out who Real Madrid will be taking on in those playoffs. And of course, there'll be a lot of talk about the collision costs that they find themselves on. 37:46LJ Games Barcelona is coming up on Saturday. Be sure to be with us for the full preview from 2 30 p.m eastern right here on espm plus things going well at barcelona right now thanks to no small part to this man lemme yamal this is a top comeback saying mundo deportivo remember barcelona fell behind to copenhagen but he pretty much single-handedly sparked the comeback he's doing brilliantly we don't need to tell you that he's amazing sid and he continues to show just how good he is. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And he said something very interesting, I thought, after this game. He said that he feels more free, looser in the way that he plays in the Champions League.

38:29I really enjoyed the way that he said it, not just what he said. He said, you know, in the Champions League it's normally just one-on-one, me against one man. And there was a kind of a pause and he sort of thought about it. He said, well, not normally one, it's normally a couple. But that's fewer than it is in La Liga. You know, I feel like I've got people I can run at, people I can try and take on. and when he's on the kind of form he's on yesterday, there are moments when you think, wow, they just can't stop him. I think another thing that's really important...

38:57Skillful winners in the past, people who take on their markers, people who go fast, people who maybe will cut inside and score a brilliant goal. But I don't think we've seen many players playing in that kind of position who have so consistently made the right decision as Laminya Mal does. And I think that's one of the things that makes us think that this is a guy that's going to be a really good player for a very long time. And maybe also this is a guy that can evolve and end up playing in a different position because I think he's more intelligent on the pitch than traditionally wingers have been.

39:24I think there's more variety to his game. I think his ability to choose the moments is really striking as well. I know this is obvious. I know everybody knows this, but once in a while it's worth reminding ourselves he's still only 18. I know, isn't it crazy? You're nodding along to everything that Sid's had to say there, Jan. Well, yeah, I mean, the privilege when you're getting older that you've seen players coming through. You think when someone stops playing, there won't be that talent again. And you saw a mess. You saw Cristiano Ronaldo. And then suddenly players like this suddenly occur on the international stage.

40:02And I would say this, I think this is a player who is still developing. I mean, I think he adds new things to his game all the time. without losing the abilities that we learned to love when he was a young lad two years ago. So this is a fantastic player. And it's also so a part of that Barcelona that we have learned to love over the years, as me getting in love with football in the 70s, with the players they had into the 80s and 90s and into our time now. And I mean, it's just like unbelievable that there are still some talents coming through that is so much better than the rest of us trying to do something right on the football pitch.

40:50But now, Jan, you're in love with telling people I told you so on social media. And so it's time to give you the spotlight once again, because Florian Hurtz has the most goal contributions in the Premier League since December 20th. Yes, it's tied to Cherkin, Enzo Fernandes and Antoine Semenyo. But still, let's not let that get in the way of a good I told you so moment because we saw another big night for him and a starring role against Carabag 2. Jan? Yeah, I love Flora Vista. As you know, that is no secret. I also agree with Julian Nagelsmann when he said earlier in this season, if he's going to get an assist, then he has to have someone who scores on the fantastic passes he's got.

41:30I mean, at the beginning of the season and part of this season, And he is, of course, because of his big, big fee, he's been a symbol of Liverpool. They are a reigning champion. They haven't been doing good enough. But Florian Witts, I mean, you don't have to be a professor in football to understand that this is a fantastic talent. And he will turn into be, I'm not saying a fantastic history of Liverpool, some of the greatest, because there are so many of them. But I would say that this will be a major, major player for Liverpool in seasons to come. Now, this also isn't crazy news, obviously. And I know you can tell it's against Carabag in this, like last time when Jan said, I told you so.

42:13But you were even saying to yourself, Stevie, and it's nothing new that we didn't already know about just how talented he is and what you saw from Florian Wurtz. Well, it's kind of two things that, you know, one said, come up with, and then one Jan made there. You know, the greatest players make the right decisions. And the greatest players have got the greatest feet. And so if Florian Vert can start making as many good decisions as he dances past people with his quick feet, then there's a possibility he will be one of Liverpool's greats because he has talent coming out of his ears. No question.

42:55I just think there's no question in Germany that his decision-making was spot on. And I think the biggest problem he's had is just those decisions have to be made a little bit quicker in the Prem. And once he does that, this guy's going to be frightening. I mean, his feet are frightening against Karabag. He was walking past people, just moving the ball from left foot to right foot. it was almost like somebody put cones down and said, you know what, go and dribble around these cones. Because it was so easy. So, yeah, if he can get that final decision a little quicker, then, listen, he's going to be an absolute dynamite.

43:37Yeah, another good news for German footballers. We got to see Jamal Musiala making his first start since returning from injury, Jan, and also getting a goal in the game against PSV, which we can't begrudge this. Everybody's got to be happy to see this. Yeah, but it was a part of a risk. We discussed that. I mean, because he's been out, maybe he should take some time to get into the game. Because when you've been injured, you come back, you need to have that balance and you know that you need that timing. And then there is a chance that you can be injured through some muscles injury. But that will make him ever so good.

44:14They wanted him to play 60 minutes yesterday. That's what they said before the game. And getting the confidence. and a little fun fact for you. This gold was Bischoff playing to Karl, Karl playing to Muziola. Total, these players are 59. 59 total. Stevie, hello. Me and you, we are old. I tell you what, though, what a time for him to be coming back for Bayern Munich, Shaq. It is. And because he's such an incredible footballer. We all know that. And I think part of the love affair, if I can call it that, with Jamal Moussiala is how he plays the game. We just got finished speaking about Laminia Mal, about Florian Virch, and the kind of joy and freedom that they play the game with.

45:03And Moussiala is from exactly that mould. Incredibly talented, who just seems to play as though he's on the playground and enjoying every minute of it. And even the neutrals have to enjoy seeing Moussiala being back involved at this level. Yes, and you can see Musiala when he plays for Bayern, as he will be doing a lot more this season, right here on ESPN Plus. 46:54Go to maintainx.com slash sports. That's maintain and the letter X dot com slash sports. Let's bring you our favorite table of a Thursday. Power rankings. A couple of surprises both ends of the table. Manchester United on top. I want two games. Well, to be fair, two very big games and nobody else can claim as much. Big games. Two really big games. Two. I can't, Manchester, I couldn't deny them that. And then on the other end, as I mentioned, Augsburg are in after beating Bayern Munich at the Allianz. Augsburg, wrong end of the Bundesliga table, no. But you beat Bayern Munich in Munich. You deserve to be in the top ten.

47:41Credit Augsburg. The rest of you all just pick a spot, have a spot. I loved it. The rest of you all just picking up a spot. Why are you looking up? I'm checking something. What are you checking? How's Dortmund? How did Dortmund move up a place? They've lost two of the last three. Dortmund move up a place. And by the way, one of them was against Spurs. One of them was against Tottenham. How'd they do that? I, I, I know. I think we've got him. Have faith. I think we've got him. Well, I'm listening to Jan. Xhaka, after doing my own ranking today, I have so much respect for you. His fantastic hard work that goes on for hours and hours to make this.

48:22But I have to call Borde Glimt. Borde Glimt, I know that you beat Atletico Madrid, you beat City and you beat... And you got a draw at Dortmund. But you know the Xhaka Hislop guy? Yeah, that guy. He put Augsburg there instead of you. Borde Glimt was supposed to be in for Dortmund. They got that wrong. I'm just going to go to my I'm going to go to my checklist here again How's PSG in? Straight in at number three A big draw against Newcastle at home In the last three games they've drawn one, lost one and won one They've won one And they're going straight into number three They're top in France, through three knockout stages direct Oh the top in France is a surprise yeah I think because top you is you can argue the case for Manchester United number one and you can argue a good case for Augsburg being the first team to be fine so we agree but even he doesn't know why the rest are in the middle I was all about the top on the bottom here top and tail yeah okay have you said if you You got any complaints with this like everyone else?

49:41You've got to ask a question of the goalkeeper somewhere, right? He's going to try to blame my goalies somewhere. Let me just go kind of play to the Spanish teams, really, and what Self and the Vigo are doing in Europe with a team full of Galitians and youth team players is fantastic. And I saw a statistic today, and I'm going to hope that I haven't got this wrong. There is no player in European football who has had more goal contributions in European football than Anthony apart from Kylian Mbappé in the whole of Europe since Anthony arrived at Betis. He has completely changed Betis over the last year and a half and so he for me should be right at the top of any list.

50:20Oh Anthony? Is that a player list? Yeah. That's a player list. So what's a Galician? Somebody from Galicia. Somebody from Galicia. No that's Celta and this is Betis. Who's that? These are the two teams. You do not like his accent or you just don't know? I've never heard of him. I don't know the region. No. Northern Spain, Galicia. I thought you were laughing because you said Galicia. I was like Galicia. But, Shaka, just on behalf of the Norwegians, did you say that you missed out on a yellow-black and you put... That's right. Round yellow-black. Thank you. And it was not young boys, not young boys, but...

50:58Just to make sure. My apologies to all Norwegians. Thank you. That's a first apologies. I apologize all the time. I live in a house with five women. Shaka, Jose Mourinho, they're all from the same club. Come from the same club. Thank you so much. Let's move on from those power rankings. Let's end this up there before it gets worse. Extra Time is on the way next. All of the guys will be answering your questions. Make sure to join us over there. It's coming up right now.

51:29Welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time. We've got Shaka, who's been getting picked on all day as a goalkeeper. Stevie Nicholls here. Sid Lowe's joining us as well. The dog stopped whining. Can we let the dog in now? Let the dog in, Sid. It's actually tight. The dog is still whining, but she's sort of the other side of her... She's down the stairs, the other side of her gate, so you probably can't hear her, but I can hear her, and I'm slightly worried about it. We've been hearing her also, Sid. So she's upset that the door's being closed and she's not allowed in, Sid. Is that what's happened?

52:02Who let the dogs in? That's basically it. Exactly. I could go and let her in now, but she'll make even more noise. She can tick off. Why are you wearing headphones, Zed? Because the wireless ones gave up on me halfway through the show. I'm having an absolute nightmare today, Kay. I've gone through headphones that gave up on me. Wireless ones, which inevitably, being headphones with a wire, I then had to spend five minutes untangling the things before I could put them in my ears. I mean, honestly. Benny Hill! That's Benny Hill! It is Benny Hill.

52:52I like this one too. I don't think this is cool either, to be fair to him. OK. Let's get started. That was brilliant. The rest of the month already decided. OK, have you... There's a dog again. Let me pour a dog in, Sid. Let her in. I'm going to have to go and let the dog in. Yeah, let her in. Let her in. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, Sid, let me pour you in. Jan can sing while Sid is doing that. First question's up for Sid anyway. So, have you been part of a locker room where the manager lost the squad but regained it later? Or is it a case where once the team turns on the manager, it's over forever?

53:26Anyone? I've never been a part of that dressing room. You're done, you're done. I know it's all. You're done, you're done. The thing is by footballers, I mean, they call footballers, they call us stupid. But it's one ability we have. We can see someone coming into a dressing room faking. If you try to be a coach coming into a dressing room and you try to be something you're not, you're out. And I was in Germany in the 90s and there's so much sound there. I miss the cat now. Oh, there it is. Yes. She is. Oh, fantastic. Nice one. All right. Nice. Nice one. She's a bit shy. Sid, why can't we see her?

54:09She's just so excited to see you, isn't she? Do you want to turn around? Sid, look, red balls. Come here.

54:20Look at that. Oh. She will be on Shaka's power rank next week. That's right. Ross, what have you done? Check his paw rankings. You pulled the cable out, you silly arse. Dog rankings. It took a minute. Top dog. All right. Jan, with Norway qualified for the World Cup and Bodo Glimp qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League, have we reached the peak of Norwegian football? The World Cup year to come? Well, we're not peaking. Yeah, not yet. But it was a fantastic night last night. When we did Benfica-Real Madrid in the show, we didn't even talk about Kjell Drup who scored two goals, a young kid playing for Benfica.

55:07Erling Haaland scoring. I mean, we are on so on a track now, Norway. We are unbelievable. And the optimism in Norway now before the World Cup, we are discussing now who we're going to play in the final. That's where the optimism is now for our national team. But on the other hand, we have some weaknesses. We have a goalkeeper who doesn't play for Sevilla. We have some defenders struggling at the moment. But we are very proud of Bode Glimp because we haven't had so much success in the Champions League since Rosenberg. Remember when Rosenberg always used to be in the Champions League? They beat Real Madrid.

55:45They beat AC Milan away. But what Bode Glimp did the last three games off-season, that is an unbelievable accomplishment. There's a reason why we didn't talk about Sheldrop last night. Because we were doing the highlights of the goals. And I was trying to figure out the guy's name. And I thought, all right, what I'll do is, I'll just copy what Dan says. So I went to Dan, and Dan went, yeah, that's a great goal, Steve. Because Dan couldn't say it either. So we ended up not even saying his name. Say it again loud and proud, Jan.

56:29Meanwhile, we lost Sid momentarily, even when he was back, because did the dog then disconnect you, Sid? The dog quite literally put a paw on the phone and pulled the cable out and managed to turn the phone off. So, yeah, I've come back just in time to discover that somebody thought that the sensible way to get a pronunciation right was to copy Dan to us.

57:01okay yep even his mates popping now as well so does that is that type of water dog very very very very very needy so apologies for that welcome on the show anytime absolutely a lot needy and there's a lot of needy people on this show as well so for Shaka how often do keepers practice their attacking prowess none just know you don't know I mean you mess around you mess around you know before after treating or whatever but not with any seriousness no what is prowess for us foreigners. What does that mean? Strength. Your strength. Strength. The majority right the majority of people if you were to stand and watch a bunch of players messing around the whole squad in the penalty box and somebody's just whipping balls in for a laugh you would be able to pick out the goalkeeper in 0.1 second.

58:110.1 second. So there's one. There's no style. Did you see Archie's video from Manuel Neuer the other night? Yeah, we were here in this video. Wow. I mean, they claim that Manuel Neuer could play in midfield for Bayern Munich. We never know if it's true. Yep, so he'll get a little bit of practices. I'll have a guess.

58:45I actually got told that Stevie Nichols not a bad goalie recently Stevie Nichols told you that

58:55it's a charity game or something with Steven he said Stevie was a hell of a goalkeeper.

59:02Nothing you can't do, Shaq. You've got a body of a goalkeeper. What's that supposed to mean? I think that was you. I don't know what that was. His body's a temple. Thank you very much. After Real Madrid's loss to Benfica, Sid, they finished ninth and now face either Benfica again or Bodo glimped in the playoffs? Focusing on Bodo, who beat both City and Atleti in the Champions League this season, do you think they can pull off another upset and knock out Real Madrid? Well, I feel like the Benfica game is, from the point of view of the next match, is probably a warning in time for Real Madrid. Now, obviously, you can have a warning in time, but you've then still got to get the preparation right.

59:50And one of the problems that Real Madrid have is there's been a very clear sense of their fitness levels or their physical approach not being as good as it should be. And they really wanted those extra couple of weeks to kind of prepare for the rest of the season. They now don't have those. I think Bodo Glyn, given what they did to Atletico Madrid, given what they did to Manchester City, they will feel they can have a go at Real Madrid, who are a team that structurally haven't been good at all this season. But of course, they have probably the best goalkeeper in the world and probably the best centre forward in the world.

1:00:20And so even if the rest of the team isn't working, they can still catch you. And in fact, I thought Mourinho said it brilliantly last night. Mourinho said, you know, you need the perfect game to beat Real Madrid. With very, very little, they can kill you. In fact, Kylian Mbappe very nearly did. In a game in which Madrid did very, very little, he scored twice. And so I think Bodo Glimp will be conscious of the fact that no matter how well they play, Madrid only need three or four moments. And over two legs, they will probably get them. Yeah, yeah. And they've been the Champions League giant killers so far.

1:00:48Can they do it again if they are to face Real Madrid? Well, I think that the point Sid is making is that this was a warning for them, for Real Madrid, losing against Benfica. But it would also be a good motivation for Borrengliem to see what Benfica did to them. I mean, that was funny today. The big headline in Norwegian papers was three of the players had already booked a holiday to the Canary Island. So they had to say, we can't travel now because we are playing Champions League. We're playing Champions League playoff. I mean, and now we're talking about that Bordeaux Glimt will know that Mbappé can do their harm.

1:01:28Yes, they would. I mean, just to have that conversation is fantastic. But you never know, these Cetri Knutson, the coach there, he has to be named as well. And these players, they are very stubborn to their system. And they will play their system even against Real Madrid. and they will do their things. But we have seen, of course, we saw they were 2-0 up against Tottenham at home, a game they should have won, but kind of Tottenham came back in that game. And I never knew I should say this, but I think that the Real Madrid would be a slight favourite against Bordecai, but you never know. Okay. Jan, do you like the reported Oscar Bob move to Fulham?

1:02:08Well, I only this World Cup year got my Norwegian glasses on and we need Oskar Bob to play football. And lately, when City haven't played well, he was also injured. He had a terrible injury, but it came back. Respect to him. And I think for him to move to Fulham with a very sensible, good coach there in Silva, a teammate in Sanderberg, another Norwegian playing in midfield there, it will be a battle for him as well because you have players like Wilson. There's a lot of players doing well for them in that midfield, but I think that is a great move for him. And he got to play football now before the World Cup.

1:02:47Sid, you can have dinner with any figure from Spanish football. Who are you selecting and why?

1:02:58Well, I don't know if this is cheating, son, a little bit, because maybe you don't see him as purely a Spanish football figure, but it's got to be Diego Maradona. It's got to be Maradona, who, of course, played here for Barcelona in Sevilla. So I think he counts. even if he's a global figure, not just a Spanish one. Yes, that would be good. What would you like to know most if you start with Diego Maradona about Spanish football, Sid?

1:03:22I'd be fascinated to know, actually, about the rivalry between Barcelona and Athletic Club Bilbao. And if you've never seen it, go and have a look at the Copa del Rey final between Athletic Club and Barcelona when players are literally doing kung fu kicks on each other. It's the most brutal, violent Copland Ray Farner you could ever wish to see. I'd quite like to know a little bit about that. Yeah, that would be good. All right, for Sid again, how many points do you think Real Oviedo will get in total by the end of the season? Oh, no, no. He's ticked the ear out of the balloon. I know, I'm sorry.

1:04:02I know, I know. I've been having this conversation at home and trying to work it out. And I hate to say this because the points total I think Oviedo can get to is a very, very, very long way from safety. I think the most Oviedo are going to get to this season is going to be 32. 32. You got a number of mentions on the coverage of the day, even though you weren't on it. We knew you were in the stand. They've only got 13 after 21 games. Let's sit at us, 32. Exactly. No, no, we're in trouble. That 32 is a very, very optimistic view of it. Yeah, absolutely. Logic and continuing the same form suggest we maybe don't even get to 30.

1:04:43But I'm going to be optimistic. But even in an optimistic scenario, I just... Yeah, I think it's done, unfortunately. He let the air out the balloon, and then you just slice the balloon up into little bitty pieces. Poor Sid. And then ate it. I'm sticking up for you, Sid. I think you refuse to stick up for goalkeepers. Sorry, Sid. But at least your dog loves you. Yeah.

1:05:11Thank you so much for sending any questions except for that last one, Andrea. Oh boy, that's a tough school today. It started so well.
