In short
Saurabh Mukherjea argues that India’s middle class is hitting a “breakpoint” due to (1) weakening job creation for graduates, (2) rising household indebtedness driven by social-media aspiration, and (3) a broader hollowing-out of middle-class life that increases inequality and psychological/financial stress. He connects these to automation/AI, “polarization” of jobs, and a shift toward borrowing and online trading.
Guests
Saurabh Mukherjea, author and founder of Marcellus Investment Managers; he presents years of data research (income tax/GST, RBI, job creation, graduate outcomes) and claims from his book “breakpoint.” Raj Shamani hosts (no background details provided in transcript).
Key claims
- Only a small slice of the population (roughly 5–12 lakh to 1 crore earners; “middle”) bears most tax burden: ~70% of income tax and ~40% of GST.
- Graduate-to-job pathways are breaking: white-collar job creation slowed sharply after 2020/COVID; graduate unemployment and underemployment rise.
- Middle-class savings/conservatism myth is broken: personal loans are increasingly used for lifestyle/aspiration; many households juggle multiple loans.
- Real wages haven’t kept up with living costs for about a decade (wage growth lags inflation/cost of living).
- Social media “industrializes aspiration,” while exam culture and F&O/trading create compulsion (Skinner-box analogy).
Notable examples
- A person reportedly took “700 personal loans” over five years (credit-score timing loopholes).
- “Dog walking” during/after COVID as a gig-income example for young people (3–4 lakh/year).
- UPSC/police exam persistence framed as unpredictable-reward compulsion.
- CFO example: reportedly 30 personal loans leading to bankruptcy.

इसीलिए, I use Porter.

So women are earning money. Naturally women earn money.
5:46सरा लिंग है करा लोगार में रहिम है को चारत बार इंड equal कर दें इस यह सिर दिसकでは women cricketers now surging ahead of men. That is Murana India was middle aged men hitting the ball around getting big bucks for that. New age new India is women from small towns from humble backgrounds rising in the world. So similarly if we look at the other view our mental model of middle class life in India is three ways. First is university education is not looking at any of the benefits of university. There is a lot of data in our breakpoint in our book breakpoint. There is a lot of data फोड़ा हमने, graduate unemployment राज, graduate unemployment करीबं 30 % मैट रहा है, मतलब जितने भी इंडिया में graduate है, one in three are sitting vela, जो illiterate है, unpaid है, उसके unemployment rate 3 या 4 % है तो पहला जो हमारा जो सोच था कि हम पढ़ेंगे या पढ़ाएंगे बच्चों को, वो graduate करेंगे कुछ बढ़िया करेंगे उसका वो model काफी हद तक तूट गया है, right?
7:03We still have to work hard but I'm not so sure just tattofying through class 11, 12 and through college and getting some degree is going to result in some great great job because data suggests यसा नहीं हो रहा है. तो पहला जो तूटा है कि ग्राजुएशन का जो पुरा यह बड़ाई कर लो तुमाई लाइफ सेट हो जाएगी खताएगी ग्राइशन के जुनून मेरे खियाद है दीरे -दीरे लोग के सर से उतरेगा दूसरा जो हमको दिख रहा है हमारा एक image था कि हम लोग पैसे बचाते हैं, हम लोग conservative लोग हैं, हम फजूल खर्ची नहीं करते हैं, अब दिख रहा है कि पुरा वो पिक्चर भी टूट गया है, social media का असर इतना ज़्यादा है कि one in four personal loans is to go on holiday, 25 % 27 % personal loan छुट्टी मनाने के लिए है फिर number two है phones and as we were discussing the previous one, concert देखने जाना cold play आरी है, 7, 8, 10, 1000, 15 ,000 रुपय का लोन लेके आप cold play के concert में फ़रा मजा लूटके आओ, right तो इस प्रकार का बहेवर इस हद तक हो गया है कि इंडियन मिडिल क्लास is now amongst the most indebted in the world.
8:09तो अगर हम इसको दूसरे देशों से compare करें, household debt, household debt, household का करजा, अगर अब home loans को बाहर रख दो, home loans को exclude करो, household debt to income is 32-33 % in India. दुनिया में जाधा तर देशों में ये ratio यो 15 से 22-22 के वीच में रहता है. चाइना युएस में 20 के आसपास है, हम लोग 32 पे पहुँच गया, right? We have become world champions in borrowing tons of money super fast and social media has played a big role. What do you mean by 32 % मतलब? बदलब जितना हमारी घर, हमारी कमाई जितनी है, house roads की कमाई जितनी है, उसका एक तिहाई, if one third of that is debt outstanding इसको और एक तरीखे से देख सकते हैं कि अगर मैं 100 रुपे कमा रहा हूं तो 32 रुपे मेरा करजा है 32 रुपे मेरा करजा है and there's another way to see it जिन हाउसरोड जे पैसा बोरो किया है उनका 40 % income केवल EMI चुकाने में निकल रहा है right so खाना पीना तो चोड़िये, EMI चुकाने में 40 % income निकल जारी है, right and RBI to give the central bank credit भूत सारा data RBI ने पुबलिश किया है so for example one in two middle class Indians is now indebted most people who are indebted are juggling multiple loans, right and then for loans below 50 ,000 for loans below 50 ,000 or total debt below 50 ,000 70 % of those who have loans below 50 ,000 are juggling at least three loans तो पच्छास अजर उती बड़ी रकम नहीं है उसका मतलब वो three loans क्यों है विकोज बंदा एक से दूसरे को चुका रहे है दूसरे से तीसरे को चुका रहे है और cycle गुमा रहे है और ऐसे cycle गुमाने वालों को में काफी मिला किताब लिखते टाइम और मेरे होश उड़ गए कि लास पांच साल में सोषल मीडिया ने क्या तपाही मुचाई है लोगों को पागल कर दिया है लोग सोषल मीडिया में देखते हैं कि राज शवानी लंडन जा रहा है या पैरिस जा रहा है गोते हैं मुझे भी जाना है दूसरी बात है कि मिराज की तरह कमाता नहीं हूँ लेकिन मुझे लाजा रहा है कि बैंक मुझे करजा दे रहा है लोन दे रहा है मैं भी लंडन, पैरिस मॉरल लीव्स के लिए निकलता हूँ रहीट तो एस्पिरेशन इंडस्ट्रिलाइजड हो गई है पहले एक link था न कि आप जितना कमाओगे आपकी उतनी ही aspiration हो अब वो link टूड़ गया है अब aspiration industrialized हो गया है everybody wants to live the jet set lifestyle भले कमाई होना हो रहे तो दूसरा एक पुरा myth था वो टूड़ गया है और तीसरा myth था कि हम अगर नौकरी मिल जाए हम पूरा दबा के काम करیں गे आफिस में लंबे बनबे आर स्पेंड करेंगे और बहुस को इंप्रेस करएंगे दिन रहाँ बैठेंगे बहुस को इंप्रेस करेंगे प्रमोशन पाएंगे जिन्दगी में उपर जाएंगे डीटा दिखा रहा है आप वो सब कर सकते हो, कोई रोक नहीं रहा है but real wages, आपकी कमाही, real wages, मतलब inflation को adjust करने के बाद, आपकी कमाही ज़ादा बढ़ेगी नहीं, last 7-8 साल से nifty-fifty companies मैं छोटे company की बात नहीं कर रहा है, हमने nifty-fifty companies का data फोड़ा है breakpoint में, after adjusting for inflation, wages haven't risen now for nearly a decade, right?
10:59तो घर्चे बाइज से salary नहीं बड़ी, तंखाई नहीं बढ़ी? After taking into account cost of living, cost of living बढ़ रही है, हमने काफी data जोड़के दिखाया किताब में, cost of living is rising at 8-9 % per annum, which means हर 10 साल, हर 10 साल, आपकी real wages करीबन 1 third से तूट रही है, right? so your salary growth जहां तरहा है 6-7 आ रही है cost of living 8-9 से बढ़ रहा है तो हर साल 3 % आप पीछे रह जा रहे हो तो एक दशक में करीबन एक तिहाई से आपकी real wages टूट रही है now link this back to my previous point लोगों दिख रहा है यार social media में glamourous lifestyle Bollywood stars, Maldives में, Mauritius में मैं यह North Bombay में क्यों traffic में सड रहा हूं मैं भी Maldives के लिए निकलता हूं भले मेरे wages नीचे जा रही हो loan तो मिल रहा है न so I've met people who have taken 700 personal loans in the last five years 700, एक एक बंदे ने 700 loan लिया है और वो मुझे बोलता है कि 700 में से 670 में ने चुका दिया है बड़ अफसोस बाकी 30 में चुका नहीं पाया इसलिए मेरे पीछे पढ़ गया है लोग राइट आपको लोन लेने के लिए आप और मैं स्टूडियो में बैठके या जो भी दर्शक हैं के आप अपने फोन से अभी 20 लोन ले सकते हो and the credit score by the time the credit score updates 15 days later between now and then you can do if you want 40-50 loans and the system simply can't pick up on that 700 loan how did they take?
12:26so at any point in time again it was a touching story in the year of 5 ,000 ,000 5 ,000 ,000 in the year of 700 math is not mathing so he basically fell in love with a girl who was an affluent girl and he wanted to obviously give her the lifestyle that he felt she deserved so he did a lot of spending on her so he started I think initially with five loans then to keep up with that those five went to 15 loans and then he figured out that he could borrow one loan to repay another but problem in that is interest rates interest rates even for you and me were to take if we were to take personal loans would be around 12 % right top of the line 12 % but for people who are less affluent interest rates can be 18, 20, 22 % okay so your compounding compounding is coming and you soon have to end up running faster and faster right so in fact during the course of the research I met a CFO I met a CFO at a prominent firm in Mumbai so he had 30 personal loans and he basically went bankrupt 30 personal loans लेके, CFO ने, तो 60 lakh सालाह ना कमाई है, तो मैं 5 lakh के बंदे से मिला, 60 lakh के बंदे से मिला, and that's when we realized Raj कि आप आज इंडिया में आप 5 lakh कमाओ, या 60 lakh कमाओ, या 1 करोड कमाओ, everybody broadly swimming in the same pool of increasingly few white collar jobs, compression and wages, and crazy levels of debt, right, so, so ये जो तीन इंडिया के जो सिद्धान्त से मिडल फ्लास के, हम पड़ेंगे, ग्राजुवेट बनेंगे, महनत करके, प्रमोशन हासल करके, कमाई करेंगे, लाइच टैंडर फिलिविंगे, और हम सेविंग करेंगे, यह सारे सिद्धान्त हमारे तूड गए है, we have to build a new India.
14:20एक बुरी नहीं सोच लानी है. क्योंकि आए यूदि नहीं थिंग आए निवाचिंड गर्ण नुकरी लाएंगे.
14:31नुकरी तो आएंगे नी बास. dog walking करते हैं, COVID के time शुरूआ था, because people didn't want to leave their homes and these youngsters, they were 18 years old, they were smart kids, right I think building was the car washers, they were their children and they said, we'll take your dogs in the morning, so in the building, we have about 100 flat, so we have about 100 dogs and they would take them out and then after COVID ended, people said, I'm lazy, I'm not going to go to 30 floor lift, I'm going to go to the garden, you just take it, and these kids now, my kids are also 22-23 years old, this morning और शाम जाते हैं, करीवन सौ कुछाटों को खमाते हैं, and they end up earning 3-4 lakhs a year, and बाक्की तिन में देखता हुआ पार्क में बाटिवाटाब आपने स्मार्टफोन पे केले हैं, पुछ दिन के तेम, middle of the day, the dog doesn't need to be taken out.
15:31So, that's an example of, there was no advertisement given, that dog walking, please apply, right? these crits were young, they were smart they realized that there is work to be done and they jumped in and created something and to give a more glamorous example someone like you figured out that India may be a company in this way figuring out how to become a company you came from India and you came from India and this is a big business so there will be plenty of work in India just that there will be very few jobs and which is dichotomy which is dichotomy because this dichotomy creates a lot of pressure create करती है, कि बहुत मेरे पास जॉब नहीं होगी कोई बहुत नहीं होगा बोलने वाला कि अब तूट, अब तूबैट आज का तरह यह प्लान है, यह तरह अप्रेजल यह तरह प्रमोशन है, वो सारा structure खताम है, right and therefore the wiring of our minds, the rewiring of middle class India, the rewiring, the rethinking of priorities in life I think will be quite profound and हमको लोगा कि break point लिख के हम चाहते हैं परियास कर रहे हैं कि वो rewiring वो rethinking शुरू की जाए okay, middle class होता कौन है explain me this कौन है middle class एक छोटी सी cottage industry है जो ये चीज ये काम करती है but jokes apart, jokes on the cottage industry apart, जब हम किताब लिख रहे थे तब इतिफाक से बहुत अच्छी किताब मिली मेरे एक मित्र है रमाभीजापुरकर जी बहुत बड़े consumer strategist है तो उन्होंने बहुत अच्छी किताब लिखे लिलिपूट लैंड बोलके तो उन्होंने उसमें लिखा था उनका definition था कि middle class वो विक्ति है जो 5 लाग से 30 लाग के बीच में कमाता है 5 lakhs per annum to 30 lakhs per annum ठीक है अच्छाल आना तो हमने वो देखा फिर हमने काफी सोचा हमने दूसरे लोग के definitions लेखे हमने बोला यार पहले let's agree two criteria which will define the middle class पहला criteria तो obvious है the middle class has to be in the middle तो अमीर और गरीब के बीच पीच का तपका but we said और एक क्राइटीरी होना ची नि तो इतना महनत का क्या फाइदा दूसरा क्राइटीरी हमारा है कि आधा देश का कमाई middle class से आएगा ठीक है, half the कमाई of the country has to come from the beach का तपका नि तो इतना महनत करके इतना बहस करके क्या फाइदा, गर हम देश के 30 % income 30 % of the income is under discussion then the discussion loses a lot of the work and the relevance now, अब सवाल ये खड़ा हुआ कि बीच का इदेटिफाइ करना है और देश का आधा आधा भी होना चाहिए ठीक है, अगर हमारे देश में सब की कमाई मोटा मोटी बराबर होती वोड़े बीच में बीच पर बीच के लोग को unequal देश है as per भारत सरकार का income tax data करीबन 3 ,00 ,000 लोग हैं जो सालाना 1 ,00 ,000 कमाते हैं 1 ,00 ,000 कमाते हैं in terms of filing और भी ज़्यादा हैं वो फाइल नहीं करते हैं तो 3 ,00 ,000 क्या 9 ,00 ,000 लोग हैं जो 1 ,00 ,000 कमाते हैं वो फाइलिंग में 3 ,00 ,000 कमाते हैं वाइट का ऐसा, तीन लाख लोग हैं जो एक करोड से जाधा कमाते हैं and there are millions of people who earn less than five lakhs, right?
18:58millions of people, ठीक है?
I'm glad you said this, मुझे बोलना बड़ता ही usually मेरा line होता है क्योंकि मैं इसमें बहुत भेंक का research किया हुआ that's why I said, मैंने पता कि आप 5 लाक पे कमारे बंदा वो भी लोन ले रहा है दवा के और 60 लाक वाला C.A.
20:3520 crore 20 crore to 200 5 lakhs to 1 crore now as per भारत सरकार का डेटा करीबन 5 crore filers है इन दोनो इस रेंज के बीच 5 crore just to put some numbers इंडिया की आबादी 1500 crore 150 CR वोटर 100 CR किवल 5 crore filers right now अब मैं तुरा सा दुखता है एक डेटा परंट देने वाला हूँ February 2025 में निर्मला सीथरमन जी ने बोला कि 12 लाग से नीचे कमाने वालों को tax देने की income tax देने की आवशकता नहीं है तो इसका माइन एक क्या हूआ उसका मदलब क्या हूआ केवल 2 crore लोग मोटा मोटी आज के डिट में tax भरते हैं लेकिन यह जो पूरा अबादी है यह 2 crore का जो tax भरता है 5 crore का जो 5 ,002 1 crore के बीच में कमाता है this अबादी basically bears 70 % of the income tax burden and roughly 40 % of the GST burden right और वो कमाल का factoid है wait wait explain explain total filing ही tax ही कितनी होती इंडिया में यह रहाइब तोटल फाइलर रफली फाइव तो शिक्स करोड हैं पाँच से छे करोड लोग फाइल करते हैं लेकिन पे कर रहे हैं आफ्टर द रिहायत फॉर पीपल उनिंग 12 लक से निचे उनको जरूरत नहीं है पे करने वाले केवल दो करोड के आसपास है अ करोड के वर के वर 250 ,000 लोगी है अच्छा राइट बहुती कम एप इक वह थी कम एप बिल्कुल रख बट रहुट प्र इस दो करोड पीपल आर सुपर इंपोर्टन फो इनकी तीन एमियत है राइट इन इस वर people like you and me can have we enjoy our five minutes of importance because हम लोगो जितनी भी लोग आली दे हमारे पैसे पे देश चल रहा है तो पहला है यह वाली जो अबादी है चोटी सी अबादी right between say 5 lakhs to 1 crore or 12 lakhs to 1 crore they're paying 70 % of the income tax 40 % of the GST तेश में 1500 क्रोर की अबादी है लेकिन ये किवल 2 क्रोर लोग इतना भारी लोड उठा रहे है 70 % of the income tax and 40 % of GST अब आते हैं इनका next layer of importance ठीक है इंडिया में करीबन 250 मिलियन 25 क्रोर लोग formal employment कमाई करते हैं कुछ formal है कुछ informal है जो बंदा मुझे तक्सी ले आया है वो शाइद इन्फर्मल में बैठता है आप और में शाइद फर्मल में बैठता है बट पीपल लाइक अस, my taxi driver, the lady who cooks for us आप और में करीबन 25 क्रोड पीपल आर अच्छल देविगें गेंफूल वर्क इसके लाबाँ 25 करोड अगरी कल्चर में काम कर रहे हैं, 50 क्रोड बैठे हैं, I don't know what they're doing but बैठे हैं as per data and this 100 क्रोड are the voters and then then there are 50 क्रोड बच्चाज so they are below voting age so they are below voting age so they don't talk about them, okay?
23:47now coming back to the 25 क्रोड who are working, out of this 25 क्रोड just about 5 क्रोड are formal salaried employment वाले लोग, right? उनको salary मलती है, कोई कहीं पर काम करते हैं, लेकिन ये ये 5 crore salary वाले लोग, which includes the 2 crore pairs of income tax, they employ the other 20 crores. तो ये जो छोटी सी आबादी है, 5 crore filers, 2 crore pairs, this आबादी is unusually influential, because इनके कमाई से देश के tax भरी जाती है, इनके कमाई से देश की सरकार, भारत सरकार को पैसे मिलते हैं और इनके कमाई से Employment Employment मिलती है For each वेक्ति who's paying tax Effectively five other people Get a job, right?
24:32The cook driver made is easy to think But indirectly as well जो airline का pilot है जो security guard है building का उसको भी मेरे कमाई के हुजा से Because you're spending So that's And therefore, जब इस middle class ये 5 crore filers कि जब जिंदगी के सारे सिधान तूड जाते हैं, सारे पिलर्स तूड जाते हैं तो उसका effect is colossal. Right? Which is why हमने दो साल कड़ी महनत की to pull this data together and show the picture कि बहुत बड़ा change हो रहा है. The construct of middle class life is breaking. We need to rebuild a new construct for our future, for our children's future, for the country's future because this chhota sa abadi is the foundation on which our economy is built.
25:18tell me five six points one one जो आपने book में research करके you have come down to this conclusion कि okay first is milt class यह है जो सबस्यादा load ले रहा है second is milt class का जो main principle था कि मैं यह करूँगा यह करूँगा यह करूँगा वो तूट रहा है right इस से effect क्या होगा या क्या हो रहा है you must have found something तो ठीक होगा लेटरान, लेट सब्दो आज क्या होरा है ठीक है, अज क्या होरा है तो वाट देटा शोज रहाज दो डिस्टेट काल्ड इन्फोएज जिनकी एक बिजनस नौकरी बोलकर एप्र एम्ज़ुमेंट क्लासिफाइड का बिजनस है तो उनके पास solid data है 2008 से लेके आज तक कितने white collar jobs create हो रहे हैं, right?
26:03by sector data है तो उस data के मताबिक, till 2020, white collar jobs were growing at 11 % each year मतलब हर 6 साल white collar jobs double हो रहे थे, right? solid अच्छी खबर, right? हर 6 साल jobs double हो रहे हैं so for a youngster, it's a terrific environment to graduate into, right?
रreit. नो इसके पीछे अगर हम sectoral data देखे. I.T. सेक्टर का बड़ा role है. रreit. IT sector is basically as per नौकरी माइनस 15 % पर jobs श्रिंक हो रहे है and no prizes for guessing इसके पीछे क्या हो रहा है कुछ हद तक automation है कुछ हद तक AI है AI का प्रहार शायद अभी शुरू हो है आगे जाके AI की कहानी शायद बढ़ी होगी but it's not just IT, नौकरी की data में लिख रहा है retail, retail में भी
27:41वो पैसे देता था तेर टेलर गाएव हो गया यह हो गई आपे ATM आटेम आगया ATM भी धिरी धरे घट रहे हैं विक्षो लोग अपने फ़ोन से पेमेंट कर रहे हैं So as life gets more and more automated The need for human beings Reduces right तो ये वाला story बहुत क्लिरली दिख रा है Now We can go to the west To understand जब यह स्टोरी लंबा खिछता है, जब इस्टोरी चलता रहे था 10, 20, 30 साल, क्या होता है, विकूस वेस्ट में, West के factories, USA, Europe के factories में, 90 के दर्शक से रोबोट साने लग गए, रोबोट से अटोमेशनल अगए ले हैं, जो factory workers थे, उनको बोला तू भाई घर जाओ, फिर अराउंड 2002-03, वो जॉब चाइना चले गए, तो West का जो डेटा, West का जो data है बहुत clearly दिखाता है between say 1985 to 2005 West की middle class की पुरी ऐसी की तैसी हो गई right and there are plenty of experts in the West who've written about it and written celebrated books and papers on it so in the book we've cited the most celebrated paper which was in 2004 it was published in an economics journal called the quarterly journal of economics उसमें दिखाया गया था by by three academics Murnane, Autor and Livy that West में क्या हो रहा है जो बिलकुली छोटा मोटा काम करता है, मानो रबिश क्लीनिंग उसकी वेज़स थोड़ी थोड़ी बढ़ रही है, क्योंकि गार्बेश क्लीनर्स की जरुवत है और गार्बेश क्लीनर्स आटोमेट नहीं हो पा है, right जो CEO है या hedge fund trader है उसकी wages तो फाड़ के बढ़ रही है बुट जो बीच में है office में secretary है clerical worker है factory में foreman है उसकी jobs भी जा रही है wages भी जा रही है तो इसको कहते है polarization thesis कि बिलकुल menial worker बिलकुल low end worker का demand है वो काम अभी भी automate करने के it's not worth it and बिलकुल जो highly skilled है उसको ता वही है superstar है वो ठीक है और बीच का बंदा middle class तबाही राइट so ये 1985 से शुरू हुई थी चलती रही 2005 in a way जो कहा जाता है कि UK में Brexit और US में Trump की जीत इनी वज़े से हुई middle class 20-30 साल की पिटाई हो गई and they said यार यह तो मजाई नहीं आ रहा let's elect a leader who will make us great again right तो हासे मागा वागा पुरा शुरू हुआ right तो यह वाला सिलसला वहाँ पे चला है middle class की तवाई हुई है an elite has been created कुछ हद तक हमारा data दिखला रहा है कि वो process इंडिया में शुरू हो गया है, just that हमारे देश में inequality as it is इतनी बड़ी है तो अगर आप middle class को hollow out कर दोगे, which is what the data is suggesting risk है, अगर middle class को hollow out कर दोगे तो inequality भेंकर हो जाएगी and the consequences are not easy to imagine given that as it is हमारे देश में inequality इतनी है but there's another dimension to what is happening and यह वाला dimension जो आपको बताने वाला हो यह West में उस हद तक हुआ नहीं है हमारे देश में 2016 में Mobile Broadband, Mobile Data जियों ने basically free करा दिया ठीक है As it is हमारी अबादी, यंग है 28 की Median Age है, so that would have meant that the typical Indian who is today 28 when he or she was 15 or 16, अपने teenage years में उसको मुफ्त में Mobile Data मिल गई 18 साल का जब्था तब बहुत सारा रिसाच दिखाता है कि आपके टीनेज एर्स में सोशल मीडिया का आपके दिमाग के बर भेंकर इंपक्त होता है because your brain is still forming, till the age of 24-25 your brain is still forming, right?
31:11तो ये बच्चा बड़ा ही वा, 17-18 साल के उमर सी बड़ा ही वा वित, वित सोशल मीडिया as his, a part of his core belief system. Right. And by the time COVID came, COVID की ताइम वैसी घर से निकल सकते कुछ और करने को है नी, वो पूरा बिसकिर उसका दिमाग और उसका फोन फूज हो गया, एक साथ. Right. उसके दो असर हुए. एक तो हुआ ये डेट वाला स्टोरी कि whatever I'm seeing on on social media, that is the real life.
32:09उनों ने ने समझाया, बेटा तुम तो FNO ट्रेडिंग कर सकते हो, ये देखो FNO ट्रेडिंग करके इन सब लोगों ने, दिगजों ने कमाया है, तुम भी कमा सकते हो, उप्शन ट्रेडिंग तो बच्चा -बच्चा कर सकता है, तो तो फिन्फ्लूएंसर्स के बदालत और मो मेल के जेब पूरे खाली कर दिये हैं हमने लास्ट चार सार में इंडिया ने करीबन चार लाग करोड इनके जेब से निकाल लिया cumulatively चार लाग करोड 90 लाग middle class वेक्तियों के जेब से निकाल के किसको दिया है आधा दिया है वाल्ज त्रीट के hedge funds को, तो यह आपके पास तो शायद पैसे नहीं थे, यह लीजिए, सालाना इंडिया से gift, पांच बिलियन डॉलर का gift, हमारे गरीबों का पैसे आप लूटिए, बाकी जो 5 billion है वो हमने divide कर लिया हमारे brokerage जिसको 1-2 billion मिला है और Bombay के जो महरती है उनको 3-4 billion मिला है पिटाई किसकी हुई है वो बिचारा वेक्ती जो बैठे बैठे अपने phone पे सोच रहा है मैंने दो class लिये थे इतने सारे YouTube पे course किये थे, पर पता नहीं कमाई क्यों नहीं हुई बैंक Nifty और Nifty में ट्रेड मार के, तो यह जो यह दो aspects, crazy level of personal borrowing to live a fantasy lifestyle and trading online in F &O on a scale not seen in any country, forget a poor country like us, we're still one of the 40 poorest country, right?
33:48मेरे खाल से इसका तालुक है with the hollowing out of the middle class, because to be अगर लोगों के पास दूसरे तरीके होते हैं जिंदगी में उपर जाने के, I am sure they would have taken that. True. Right? They had no other option. एक तो करजा लो, at a scale, दूसरा ट्रेडिंग करो. नतीजा है, we are at a juncture in Indian history where, where beyond the jobs crisis, which I think is happening around the world. It's not as if US, UK में भी भूट सारे jobs हैं. बट हमारे देश में 80 ,000 ,000 ग्राइजुएट हर साल निकल रहे हैं दूसरे देशों में इस प्रकार की यांग आबादी नहीं है उसके साथ -साथ हमने यह पूरा social media driven borrowing और trading का phenomenon बना दिया है and the financial toll, psychological toll, financial toll मेरे एक ख्याल से catastrophic है and have you heard of Skinner box economics?
34:37नहीं नहीं सुनाई क्या चीज़ है? बीएफ स्किनर नहीं एक्सपेरिमेंट किया था तो एक बॉक्स में एक रैट को रखा और उसको जब भी वो टैप करता था तब उसको खाना दे था तो consistently खाना देने लग गया जब जब उसने टैप किया तो उसकी habit form हो गई फिर उन्होंने same दूसरे experiment किया जह पर दूसी जगे भी rat को रखा और वो जब टैप करता था तो कभी उसको खाना दिया कभी उसको खाना नहीं दिया तो इस लेक रैंडम रैंडम ने रैंडम लॉटर फिर जो फिर एवेंच्वेली उनको पैटनी कुछ समझनी है इज़स एंडड़ अप किसी भी लिविंग बींग को रैंडम अवार्ट देते हो वो जादा अडिक्टेड हो जाते हैं very interesting so that was the same thing which has happened in FNO very interesting so I will give this another one okay, I didn't think about it I will give this another one which I thought about it and I couldn't wrap my head around in this book I have given data but psychological explanation I believe you have provided so in the book because jobs are so few in our country people have been asked for exam so there is no J.E.
36:02तो कोई UPSC दे रहा है and if you look at the data the success ratios are super low 0.2 % UPSC हो या पुलीस कॉंस्टबल का ओदा हो say in the state of UP आपको 0.2 % of the candidates को actually job लगेगी but लाखो लोग not only do they give the exam and the physical test वो जे ए हो UPSC हो पुलीस कॉंस्टबल they give it year after year after year तुमैं काफी शक्स से मिला जो करीबन 10 साल UPSC की fight मार रहे है and they say हम fight तब तक मारते रहेंगे जब तक हम 32 साल मैं थिंग time out हो जाता है उसमें कुछ बोलते हूं उसके आगे तो मैं पूस्ता था in retrospect I was stupid to ask the question क्यों देते हो आपको दिख रहा है कि बहुत टफ है, right, इतनी आबादी दे रही है and chances, you might as well, you know, buy a Maharashtra State Lottery Ticket, right, उसमें शायद बहुतर chances हैं कि आप जीत जाओ, rather than trying to become a get a UPSC में seat, right, so they said, नहीं यही हमारी जिंदगी है, हमारे 130-133 cousin, उसको मिला था, तो मेरी भी chance आएगी, तो कुछ अधक आपका यसकिनर वाला है वो कर रहा है उसको पता है नहीं मिलेगी बट कभी -कभी तो मिल जाती है ना तो मैं करता हूँ तो unpredictable reward creates compulsion अगर हर बार दोगे तो नहीं करेगा बट कभी -कभी दोगे तो इंसान करता रहेगा तो इसका आपने जो यह जो लोग हैं जो बार बार देते हैं they are not the one who absolute fail हो जाते हैं they are the one जो एक दो subject में अच्छा करते हैं exactly that's they say tell me last time मेरा यह वाला चार नंबर से रहे गया तो बस उसी पर सुरुप जी लगा हूँ वो चार नंबर आगा है बस मेरा तो हो जाएगा UPSC में मैं आ जाओंगा प्रफॉर्चुनेटली क्या होता है वो चार नमर आ जाते कहीं और दो नमर छूड़ जाता है and they go back to it again and again now तो मैं थोड़ा Google Google किया अपने office में दोस्तों से बात किया I spoke to some of my civil service friends तो उनके पास यह Skinner वाली थेओरी नहीं थी they said that यह क्या होता है there's a guy called Louis Althusser he's a French philosopher, he passed away I think decade ago so Louis Althusser ने 60's का दशक में बोला कि कोई भी देश में कोई भी देश में, किसी भी country में दो प्रकार के तरीके से आप आबादी को control में रखते हो तो एक तो है law and order आधा पंगा गरोगे तो पुलीस आजाएगी लोई नडर जाएगा उपका कोट में जाओगे कोट में आपके लड़ाई जाएगी बट दूसरा अपरफुल वे इसकाल दे आइडे लोगिकल स्टेत अपरेटर्स the police is called the repressive state apparatus and Althuzer's viewers if anyone wants to they shouldn't do too much of the repressive RSA but the more powerful one Althuzer said is ideological state apparatus so ideological state apparatus you give the people's mind that this exam is success because you celebrate in newspaper पेपर, पीवी, इन बुक्स, देपीपल फोगट जेए में अफवल नमबर लाए, आई आई टी बॉंबेट डली गए, फिर किसी कंपणी की सीएओ बने, इनको आप बहुत सेलिबरेट करते हो, इससे क्या होता है, जो बाकी अबादी है, वो बोलते है यही best है मेरा बच्चा भी या मैं ही स्वैम दूंगा जही और मैं भी उपर जाओंगा आप celebrate करते हो IS officer लोगो को कल्चर बनाते हो IS officer लोगो celebrate करने की इससे की लोग 10 साल UPSC देते रहे रहे रहे रहे and you can do it through newspapers you can do through media you can do through bollywood you can do it through movies and it's very important that a country builds this ideological state apparatus to keep the abadi in control in control right and in a way हमारी देश के हमारी middle class के ideological state apparatus रही है and I belong to that middle class कि तुम नंबर लाओगे ग्जाम में फिर तुम एग्जाम दोगे तुम एप्र तुम अप्टिटिविस कश्मकश्मे जाओगे बले ही तुमारे चंसे लो हो, यही तुमारा जिन्दगी का कर्दवी, रहाइट?
40:06Now, it served its purpose when the odds were reasonable. But the odds are no longer reasonable. And therefore, a lot of what many of us are doing, this standard corporate rat race and this exam story, a lot of this is counterproductive. Not only is it counterproductive at the individual level, so to be a bright person who is giving 10 times UPSC, तो उसकी जिंदगी में कितना फालतु का टाइम वो पेंड कर रहा है, वो एक्जाम देते दे, but at a national level, there is so much else we could achieve as a nation, if we could free up people's time and energies from these colossal exams, and you know, खाँन जाने कितने ऐसे पुबलिक सर्वेस और पढ़ाही लिखाई के एक्जाम है, जिसमें, most people spend the formative years of the life, तो उसका रिवायि ने energy को प्रोपर्ली यूज करें, right?
40:56We could unleash so much energy, so much entrepreneurial talent, that the country could move forward. True. And what's happening? You said, there are a lot of things. So, let's move to the happy place. What's the next level, right? Where is the world going? So, if we look back at other countries who have gone through similar change, right? Because we can't, we can't, we can't, we have a crystal ball, what's next 10 years, प्रवाद क्या होगा, बिट भी जो बाक इंट आइम, और अडिस्टार अधर कांट्री, तो युसे का कुछ हथ तक इस प्रकार का कश्मिकच रहा था, 1880 और 1910, 1880 में, एडिसन ने अविश्कार किया, जनरल एलेक्टरिक बनाया, लाइट बल्ब लाइ, electricity लाय और between 1890-1910 people who were making candles and lighting gas lights and गोड़ा गाडी चला रहे थे all youroda car वे थे, all your thank you right because once the motor car came you didn't need the fellow who was driving the horse, driving the horse kart nor did you need the stable cleaner nor did you need the gas light lighter in New York, all your thank you right and a lot of people said it's a disaster, technology to you have a job, all your time तक जो आज आलो चना चल रही है, discussion चल रही है कि AI जॉब ले लेता है, but then क्या हुआ, roughly around 1908-1910, jobs बनने लगें, because of technology, Model T, Ford आई, पहली mass-produced गाड़ी आई, Ford के production factory में, Michigan में, Ford के factory में, लाखो लोगों को जॉब मिली, फिर electricity के साथ, ग्रामफोन बनी, ग्रामफोन के साथ पहले चलिबरीटी सिंगर्स बने, होलीवड आई, होलीवड में जोब बने and America entered a great age of prosperity built around the new technologies right, the technologies of industrial production built modern America right, मेरे खाल से अगर हम, अगर हम, अगर हम, अगर हम, we as a relatively poor country if we use this new technology in our favor, there are three positive ways we could change India right, but you have to accept की country बदल रहा है, अगर change को accept नहीं करेंगे, वो इपुराना 10 साल UPSC दो और J.E.A.
43:07में घुसेर हो, अगर उसमें रह गए तो फिर बहुत रबल है right? Because you are behaving in a prehistoric manner in a fast changing technological landscape. But before we go to the happy part tell me, you said, I wanna go deeper on education and job की पुराने model से ही तो जो पढ़ाई कर रहे हैं उनको बिल्कुल भी जॉब्स नहीं किया तो देटा आजीम प्रेम जी उनिवरसिटी ने रिसर्च पब्लिश किया है करीबन दो हथे पहले बोलने में भी डर लगता है उनका रिसर्च बिकास पढ़के भी डर लगा था यह वाला रिसरच अमारे किताब चबने के बाद है so I'll just narrate the research that Ajim Premji University is giving so they are saying that in the year that you graduate उस साल out of 100 graduates only 7 will get a job right that job doesn't necessarily mean white collar job I think regard as a gender 7 बंदे बंदे को job मिलेगी out of 100 graduates in the year that you in the year that they graduate out of that 100 only 2 to 3 out of 100 will get a white collar job in the year that they graduate
44:17then as they get older after all they will compromise by the time they are 29-30 most of them will end up in some form of employment and therefore overall if we look at the graduates in India आदी देखें, 100 में से आउट अट अट अट एट ग्राडवेट्स, 65 दो सेवंटी व्हाइब सम्थी और दी अट दी अट दी अट दी दो, डोसें भीट इंप्रॉइमन बड़ी आट दी अट दी अट दी है, 25-30 ,000 graduates को job मिलती है, doesn't necessarily mean white collar job, कुछ न कुछ form का employment मिल जाता है, 25-30 ,000 graduates को, शायद factory के production line में कोई काम मिल जाए now the reason this is a little troubling is, सालाना 80 ,000 graduates निकलते हैं, सालाना करीब एक करोड लोग labor force को join करते हैं, तो अगर एक करोड लोग सालाना आरे हैं labor force में

46:20माबाप शायद साल में एक साल में पांच लाग से कमी कमाते हैं उनका भी क्योंकि उनके दादा ने, पापा ने, मा ने, सब ने काम करें घर वर बना दिया एक मोबाइल दिला दिया, वो पढ़के आगाए उसके आप घर में बैटे वें वो आज भी फोन युज और भाएड़े है वो थोड़ा चिल करने जों पर कर लेंगे जुब जिस दिन सर पे आईगी दो थिंग देर इस सम पार्ट फोपुलेशन विज दूएगी डिन की अर्बन सिटीज में तो बडी फोपुलेशन हिन इनकी हो सकता है, so I'm not I am not making the case कि भौत कोई डिसकंटेंट है कांट्री में कुछ अगर डिसकंटेंट होती अगर डिसकंटेंट होती तो कुछ तो होता राइट बिकॉस बनाइग गो तो स्माल टाउन इंडिया बनाइग गो तो विलेज़ इन नौथ इंडिया ऐसा तो दिखताने कि लोग करांती पर उतरा हैं ऐसा हुआ नहीं है तो हो सकता है कि people are pretty happy कि कोई ना कोई जी राम जी का पैसा मिल रहा है और कोई बेटी बचाओ बेटी पड़ा हो या कोई किसी state government का डोल मिल रहा है और साथ ही साथ घर में थोड़ी सी कमाई है माबाब की और मेरे पास free broadband है तो बैठे -मैठे मैं FNO trading करता हूं गाओ में right so this is entirely possible but my bigger point was that person's resource is still being wasted right if you if you're saying we want to develop the country मुझ देश आगे जाना है तो अगर आप 70 % graduates को कुछ काम दहाम देनी सकते in the year that they're graduating right sorry in the year that they are graduating 90 % of graduates को कुछ कामधाम देनी सकते और over the course of many many years you still have 40 % of graduates doing perhaps what you are describing right chilling then problem is because then you are feeding them and remember right in the beginning what I said इस अब का इसा आए है छोटे से मिदल क्लास तपके से बसीकली तीन चार को लोग दबा के महनत कर रहे हैं जिससे ये सारे लोग को पैसे डोल बाटे आ जाए, right?
48:09बड़ यह permanent unemployment है कि सिफ temporary unemployment है? कुछ इसका है तो temporary दिखनी रहा मुझे right, ऐसे ही चल रहा है as per the Azeem Preem Ji University study and as per the data we are getting, it's been now several years like this, उनके study के तहथ 20 साल से कुछ महौल ऐसा ही है, Azeem Preem Ji University study के थाष्ट कुछ 20 साल से महौल ऐसा है हमारा जो data जो हमने नौकरी का data यूज किया है, it suggests COVID is a major inflection point COVID के बाद, white collar jobs का सलसेरा काफी हद तक तूड गया, last three years काफी विटाई हुई है, जहां तक मुझे समझ आ रहा है इसका AI का automation का factory में automation, office में AI factory में robotization production, automated production lines in office may come in its importance of its importance and will increase and therefore it doesn't look like there's anything temporary about this so we then applied a lot of mind to say how does it change?
49:04so three ways it can change on the other countries' study basis first is technology itself shows its productive we call it substitution effect is what is happening and eventually इसका complementarity effect आएगा तो जैसे अगर, just to sticking to AI जैसे LLM's generative AI powerful जाती है जैसे जैसे AI का cost किरता है, दुनिया के छोटे से छोटे company even in third world countries वेल से हमको AI का इस्तमाल करना है and a lot of the use cases, a lot of the actual implementer, translation of LLM's into practical use of AI will happen through Indian engineers right and perhaps that engineer PCS or LCI tech office but my opinion a high possibility is there will be gig workers there will be gig workers sitting in their bedroom wherever Indore, Chandigarh, Coimbatore and they will be doing data labeling, cleaning and bot training for the whole world right 100 million people can get work in this way and 100 million might turn out to be a low number for all I know but I am confident that when I have to use AI the world will say Indian people do the work the second piece is as people realize that jobs are not but work is a lot and that mental mindset shift remember I spoke about Louis Althusser and the ideological state apparatus that same ideological state apparatus can start drilling into people's heads that don't find jobs don't find jobs find jobs there is a lot of work आपना बिटारा है, इंडिया इंडिया विल टेक आफ, नो यहां पर डेटा काफी एंकरेजिंग है, तो हमको जो डेटा मिला है अलग -अलग सोर्से से, इंडिया में बोथ, इंडिया में करीबन हर साल 1 मिलियन अंत्रपरनौर्स खड़े हो रहे हैं, रहे हैं, नौट परहा बहुत सरे बन रहे हैं और फॉर्मली रिजिस्टर्ट कंपनी साल में करीबन पचास -साथ हजार फॉर्मली रिजिस्टर्ट कंपनी भी आ रहे हैं और इनके पैसा भी एकत्र हो रहा है राइट रहे हैं तो करीबन 40 बिलियन दॉलर्स अफ angel, VC and PE funding भी आ रहा है, भारत सरकार भी अलग -अलग तरीके से venture capital दे रही है PSU banks, mudra SME loans दे रहे हैं, तो पैसे एकटा हो रहा है, now maybe not all 60 million will get funded, from what I'm seeing only 100 ,000 companies get properly funded every year, but it's enough to keep all these unemployed graduates interested, जब को दिख रहा है, जॉब job जुनने से बहतर है, कुछ अपना बनाता हूँ, अगर funding मिल गई तुबले बले, right, I can build something big, अगर funding ना भी बली at least रोजी रोटी बन जाएगी जिंदेगी में आगे बढ़ने का एक साधन रहे जाएगा, right तो यह mindset कुछ हद तक बन रही है and programs like shark tank, I think I've done a terrific job in legitimizing this, çünkü jab मैं छुटा था थवादा थाझा थाझाझाँ बिजनस मैं है वाद बच्चा थाझाझा थाझाँ बिजनस्मां बुझादी सावन्दा रात को दारु पीता है और दिन के टाएम ब्लैक मनी ऐंडल करता है वाज में में टायाँ
52:30मुझाइब it's fine, you're a regular Joe and then I met plenty of other business men and women who are perfectly decent people so this ecosystem will be bigger the system of the government called NSSO it's data already in urban India the number of people earning a livelihood from doing their own thing is roughly the same as the number of people earning their livelihood from doing a job right, it's a little bit more तोड़ा सा literids will Charles 19-20 में जोब जातहे हैं जोब जाते है जोब जाते हैं बन्मबर में सेमें हिख यह इस जॉग इस study जाते हैं गाँ हिते हो जाते हैं मैं उलमार चाभटक्थ का मगारि प्रशूड़ भर आनरी का में माँड़ के अंग सुखशीए 16 साल के उमर में भी ठीक है the earlier you start the more you learn if you fail a few times nothing wrong with that funding की ecosystem decent बनी है जहां पर भी जाता हूं मैं बैंगलोर, हैदरबाद Bombay decent VC ecosystem बनी है, angels की ecosystem बनी है और बनेगी एक पुरा नया ecosystem बनाना है कि यह entrance exam का जुनून सर से निकालो और business करना शुरू कर दो right, Bill Gates after all was a dropout and so was Mark Zuckerberg America has, again going back to America America made peace with this point of view 50-60 years ago Microsoft was created 50 years ago, Bill Gates Steve Jobs another dropout, right, they said this college is overhyped bright people hardworking people, entrepreneurial people will create their own thing regardless of some big college so that's the second thing we need to adopt and the third piece is a mindset shift where we move away from seeking legitimacy, status from society from sarkaar, from corporate वो कौरनर ओफिस, वो वीपी की ताइल वो मेरी बड़ी गाडी, वो मेरा लवली सूट the external markers of success the external markers of success I think increasingly will mean very little and the way we can get in our mind that the external markers of success disregard that and focus on internal skill building read, learn, think, train yourself learn from other smart people and build that skill set internally because one of the things I've learnt in the last 10 years from the time I wrote Unusual Billionaires is I've seen that the best business people in India their critical ability the core skill set is that constant ability to sit quietly, read, think, learn and not worry कि दूसरे लोग क्या कर रहे हैं या दूसरे लोग क्या बोल रहे हैं अपने लिए सोचो, अपने आप सोचो and it's that quiet building a skill, what Warren Buffett calls internal scorecard rather than external scorecard वो जो successful business people है, वो अलरेड़ी उनके लिए ये पुरा naturally आता है Buffett and Indian equivalents, right?
55:51मैंने अनुशल बिलेने जमें बरिजर पेंट और कुलदीप सिंग धिंड़ा जी के बारे बोला था I think he exemplifies it I haven't seen the धिंड़ा family ever try to grab the limelight for any reason they're amongst the richest families in the country but that ability of that family to say keep your head down learn, read, work hard constantly improve your business and create a money machine which spans decades, generations ये वाला पीस हम जैसे middle class लोगो को अपनाना पढ़ेगा, right? So, breakpoint को award मिले ना मिले, right? My job, my colleagues' job is keep learning about the country, keep pushing yourself, keep teaching yourself new skills.

59:49And in the life of a must framework, every thing has a clarity. You know how you can bring, I just want to tell you because you should meet him. It's like sophistication of a proper guy. If you want him, go to boardroom and talk to a McKinsey consultant. And then a Delhi street smart entrepreneur at the same time. like that combination is lethal and he doesn't get you so I've never met him but I'll give you something which validates your point of view so I was put in a certain award jury I think Forbes award jury and for one category we decided that he is entrepreneur of the year in that category so as is often the case in a big hotel in Bombay an award function the Alishaan award function the rest of them he didn't come to his award he didn't come to buy a card he sent somebody else and I remember that because I never met him and the reason I remember I was on the stage supposed to give him the award he didn't come to any other his hat in his firm and I remember thinking that this is a dumb person now you'll probably be a problem classic so when I met him he he had$5 billion and no cabin no cabin $5 billion so I loved that idea ticked me and when we had like a comparatively bigger office then we were like I may be as a car now across all my companies zero office.
1:01:15This way right. This way is very powerful right. That's a simple level. It's you know it's a showing off but it's not. That person can move from external markets and success and that person can you know by mid 20s, mid 30s external markets and success can move from that life in India. Powerful. Very very powerful. So that's why I broke into three parts. It's the most basic. You said gig jobs. Entrepreneurship is one. You can put breakdown entrepreneurship in two parts. One is that you make a big empire. You employ a lot of people. You make a lot of ideas. That is one. And then another is just you're a freelancer.
1:02:00You're also an entrepreneur. You're doing it alone. Which one do you think is more viable? To each his own, right? To each his own, her own. Some people who, to run a company, you don't just need to have business smarts, right? Negotiation skills and so on. To run a company also need people skills, right? And not everybody has people skills. People skills, which is an aspect of emotional control, of people managing it. It's a very distinctive skill. and if you are either an introvert or someone who lacks people skills but you are able to build formidable subject matter knowledge so doing your own thing as a gig worker on a global scale I think very feasible very possible and I think that will become a perfectly viable career option so you could become the leading headhunter for financial services CFOs for the fintech world right and if you do that on a global basis and you make a name for yourself through LinkedIn through social media through books through podcasts that I am the guru of hunting for CFOs for fintech companies the world over and you can just do that and get paid really well for it anywhere in the world if any fintech company will need CFOs you will dial you will have made your whole network you will have made your first name terms and you will be placing fintech CFOs around the world so the so the the while the negative aspect of AI of job losses is apparent the positive aspect of this being a connected world I think we don't have full advantage in India we are still in our country whereas in our country the talent the education levels they can be used to to service the world and I think that will happen increasingly people will say if I need the world's best expert on say influencing podcasts if that person is sitting in Coimbatore you know even if I'm sitting in Frankfurt let me reach out to him or her in that global ecosystem we will find our place in the sun interesting so you said key to each their own and if you can just become really really good both have opportunities regardless of the technology playing absolutely let me validate that let me validate by using your own example right why did Macro do a interview with you right asa to nhi ki usko kal election let nhi ha and Raj Shamani ke saath podcast karega to you know swing haja votes he did a pod with you because he's just as interested right or his team is just as interested in macro ki image building here because for all he knows or we know in his post political career he might be a business leader who needs to build out an India franchise and if therefore people in India are familiar with him then so be it plus there'll be enough people in France or across francophones around the world who will be watching your pod, right?
1:05:03The global aspect of what we do is actually pretty powerful, right? And in a way, our life is a dance between appealing to a global audience if we are doing something very niche. If you are a FinTech CEO for the expert, if you become a global audience, then you can become a niche thing. You can become a niche thing. You can become a big career. And then you loop back to local knowledge, right? so you loop back to saying I'm an expert on the indoor restaurant scene on the indoor food and drink scene it's a niche market but if you want to put a restaurant in indoor or do a business in food you give me a consultancy or give me a project I start your big restaurant in indoor so both games will become relevant but in neither of them will there be a boss to bless you saying your promotion your VP car park spot a lot of this is about a lot of this is about making career decisions by yourself, accumulating knowledge relationships, contacts and then just the steady grinding over the years of building a franchise.
1:06:12Have you seen any country where this polarization happened and middle class almost broke, middle class broke and middle class money is less than they have done anything. But in hindsight, if you look at that, they also went through this and one country did good and one country did bad. So, look, two countries where middle class was a big deal, which is clearly seen as UK and USA. So, in both countries, the polarization between mid 80s to roughly 2015 was a big deal. I saw it in UK myself. My parents migrated to UK in 91. We lived in one of the outer suburbs of London. So, there were all these call centers.
1:07:01The British insurance companies were called centers. People called for their claim. So, in 90, when we reached a decent suburban town, by 2001, all the call center jobs were outsourced. by 2008 when I left that small suburb of London all the buildings were empty because all the jobs were in India Gurgaon, Bangalore and because for those British companies it was far cheaper to employ a caller in India than having a British person and if I go back to that town in England where I grew up there is a bad scene now buildings are derelict, town center it's completely wrecked. It used to be a lovely shopping mall, high street, nice restaurant.
1:07:51Now, it means, after 8am, it's scared of being in the evening. Drug dealers are looking at it, crime comes in, etc. And this is not some, you know, some God forsaken part of the UK. This is a suburb of London. And, for 10 years, India has come from 10 years. And by the way, this is one of the reasons for writing Breakpoint. These changes are happening very speed. So, it's not that you and I are talking about 5 years later this is happening in India and it's so fast that unless you are awake and alive you can neither understand the risks to your business nor appreciate the upside possibilities so in UK I have seen this I didn't have a big deal I am going to work but when I am going to a small town I can see the challenges in small towns in America why do small towns even if you go to places like Philadelphia Philadelphia, it's a little bit of working class area in Philadelphia and Chicago in Chicago working class area, they are terrifying places to go to, right?
1:08:51It's very small, it's a slum kind of place, there are young men wearing hoodies and with weaponry and at night 5 o 'clock after an Uber driver will go there at night, at night, at 5 o 'clock after an Uber driver will go there because they will go, the car will go
1:09:14So that's America and UK for you. After 20-30 years of white collar jobs being outsourced to India. And blue collar jobs being sent to China. So what's happening here? There's a scene. And that's why the US is very good. That we know. And that's why the US is very good. Right? Right? So what we discussed in the previous part. What Trump very cleverly did. Is he saw this. and he said yarr he's been hit they're not understanding why they're hit because to be honest if you and I lived through that 10 years our whole life upside down got so in 1984 Bruce Springsteen sings Born in the USA basically how proud we are American born in the USA our must life by 2004 those jobs are gone to China unemployed in the USA born in the USA unemployed in the US right in the space of 20 years and and and Trump by 2014 is saying this is my chance this is all unemployed frustrated in the comments I tell them why did you come to your Pange because China took your job and the rest of the rest of the rest of the rest of the rest of the rest of the rest of the rest India initially he started in his first term when he did his first term he said all of the rest of the rest and in the second term we realized let's villainize Asians and then Indians and then you can see we discussed in the last part what happened in this?
1:10:45Out of nowhere, let's throw Iran because Iranian people are going to attack us on our you throw them and you are now seeing the consequences of that so neither UK nor USA have found any answer but the politicians have capitalized by focusing on middle class discontent now if there is a positive story positive story I'm before positive. Do you think UK and US middle class doesn't understand that jobs are going to change? This was a while ago in UK and then in US. Their jobs came to India. Their jobs came to China. Our jobs are going to be in India and it's happening. Our jobs are going to be in AI.
1:11:27I mean, our jobs are going to be in AI. And your prediction is the same thing here too. It's going to be happening. So UK and US State system was good There was better healthcare Better kids education So there was survival If it happened then We don't have education We don't have healthcare I lived through the UK And I saw Brexit India came but Brexit I saw Brexit So there are three things Which are very funny when it happens in real time right when it happens in real time the town where I grew up in London when it was being hollowed out nobody told the people in that town what's happening right it took me because I used to go between India and UK it took me 10 years I finished school college college job started it took me 10 years to understand why the town I grew up in in the suburbs of London got hollowed out there people probably haven't understood what happened I felt 10 years and nobody told the people in that town there was a local newspaper but there was no news in this kind of news and local politicians kept their mouth shut in that in that town in England they didn't explain that your jobs are going to India because I don't know why but I mean they just didn't do it similarly when America's jobs sucked out in China it wasn't until 2005-06 by which time most of the jobs had gone to China that Alochana started in the US that your jobs are out of here and that's the first path to realize.
1:13:08Today in India some people are saying that it's got a robotization or automation when we were researching breakpoint we went back and looked at studies in India. Studies have been done from 2012 onwards that India is out of factory and the data suggests that factory jobs are automated in India from about 2000 from 1000. Right? So, research remains, shows in data, but no one doesn't give up because it doesn't suit anybody to publicize these things. If I am the employer automating my factory, I'm not gonna do a podcast with Raj Shamani saying, Raj, I'm automating my factory. I'm not going to take people out of the 90%.
1:13:47If I am the politician in that neighborhood, neither am I gonna be telling my constituencies, I'm sorry, you guys are unemployed. So, and the academic, the academic, I'm sitting on my paper, but I'm not reading it. Other than geeks like me who are reading it now saying, in India, in the data, it's been going to our factory in 25 years. So, this is the first thing. The second thing, even after the jobs are gone, right? So, UK and US are going to go. UK and US The call centers are going to go. US and China are going. Even after the jobs are not gone, it's not obvious what should we do. So, Trump is saying that in America in America, I will make jobs.
1:14:27Then how will you make it? Why will any factory owner in his right mind pay four times the Chinese salary to employ Americans in Michigan? Right? And Michigan is not that there is a very big infrastructure that there will be a competitive advantage in Michigan. Similarly, if I'm an insurance company in the UK, why will I bring the jobs back to the UK? okay at some point now western companies rather than an Indian call center which is the next hit we face they are saying AI will work so they are saying now in India call center Indians put AI but it's not clear what do you do in UK and US to create jobs back there so that's another thing that when it happens when it happens no matter what when it happens unemployment other than creating racist sentiments in the western world Brexit MAGA it's not clear to politicians what is the economic answer to this problem right and the third aspect to this you were asking about constructive positive case studies positive case studies but there are many so for example Japan I think is a is a positive case study right Japan in this category middle class hollowing out is not seen in Japan when I went to Japan two times I was a lot of work in that country I was a lot of I don't see this category I don't see this category this category in Japan.
1:15:51There is no problem in Japan. There is no problem in Japan. So they have got lots of old people. Their population hasn't grown I think for 20-25 years. I think the government is giving some incentive to do something. I think Korea is also getting incentive. Japan is getting in China. So Japan has not been in this middle class hollowing out. I won't be able to tell you 100 % why were they able to escape this because they are also an industrialized country. but I guess they were able to stop a big part of their jobs going to China I'm sure Toyota and Sony and Panasonic would have sent some amount of production to China but I think they were able to hold on to enough by automating the factory and robotizing the factory to the extent where anyway labor is not necessary, factory becomes immensely robotized, automated plus their children have not been born, so that's why they had to take a lot of people to work to put them in the world.
1:16:47They had a very good education system, very good healthcare system. They had a good study. And they put them in managerial jobs or finance jobs. So that's one country I have seen which has escaped this. But you have to say that Japan has taken immigrants. Because if you take immigrants, that's part of the challenge. UK and US had taken a lot of immigrants. Those guys displaced local workers as well. The local workers then got screwed both ways. One was an immigrant, another was China was done jobs. or India has gone on jobs and the local fellow got completely zapped and then voted for Brexit or Magao.
1:17:20So Japan is a good case study. Now how much we can take advantage of that in India is clear. And therefore, where I am understanding, we will have to think our way through this. No other country at as low per capita income as us. Our per capita income is only$3000. dollars from$40. We are amongst the poorest 40 countries. We are a poor country but because our middle class is relatively prosperous, right? Those who are taxed taxed, average income is based on 1 ,50-1 ,100 ,000. So, they are second world status. Because our middle class is relatively prosperous they are taking AI. So, it's a very strange situation.
1:17:59We are a poor country similar our levels of income are similar to sub-Saharan Africa. On average basis, we are like sub-Saharan Africa. but AI is the potential of us as much as UK and US is on the way right so this is kind of we are getting the worst of both worlds that not our income is more than our technological advantage at this point and our opinion right so this is the piece and therefore we have to think for ourselves understand the problem before if you have to look at the solution you don't have to understand the problem you have to understand the problem and then say how do we move forward in breakpoint we are saying we move forward by A looking for the gig jobs that the new AI world will create.
1:18:43B by changing mindsets, changing our ideology who exam, ratta bazi and exam chhodke becoming entrepreneurs early in life realizing that jobs are few but there's plenty of work. Training our bachchas to be entrepreneurs rather than training our bachchas to be office workers. Right. And then turning to sarkar and saying funding ecosystem ban rhi hai aap please rules or regs rules or regs for small businesses halka halka kije jis se poor eye entrepreneurial boom aye and then gradually perhaps yeh lath uthraygi 10 saal exam dene ki so moota mooti today the problem is padaai se kuch nhi ho raha jobs hai nhi business karna agar chate bhi ho to pata nhi kya karna hai and in that ecosystem josko So the idea is that it is growing up.
1:19:38And that's always the beautiful part of a free market economy. If the other people don't understand the idea and you are coming, if you understand the idea that you can take advantage of it, then you have all power to it. Would you say that young people don't want to go to college? I think education is necessary. Education is necessary. Knowledge is all powerful in the modern world. Knowledge can be made in this world. formal credentialing at any time you will get to the formal credentialing I think it should be a debate on that. Data is showing that class 12 class 12 past person does just fine in India.
1:20:16That makes a great deal of sense to me. So your point is that you should always study but in a specific specialized way. This is not necessary to take degree degree which is a very formal degree. Let me validate this by pointing to you. You have made it figuring out. made. You've created figuring out what four years ago long before I wrote breakpoint. You figured out that there is a need there is a need for someone to explain to you figured out there's a need for someone to explain the world in simple language to the masses. So in India there is a need for someone to explain you figured out that if I can just explain the world to people I can build a business for myself.
1:21:01Effectively you have understood from your intuition that there is a need in the country and I will fulfill it. So, other entrepreneurs need that same way all I am doing is basically formalizing formalizing that intuition that you had I am saying where I am showing I can see the data is saying jobs are not who has a job is getting worse and I can see that social media is causing havoc because people are getting the wrong message from it, they are either getting deluded in some glamorous life which is completely unaffordable or in some financial satta bazi which is a road to ruin right the constructive aspect the figuring out aspect of it lost in this craze for glamour and quick money interesting so two things on this one is before I ask you my thing which will start another discussion tell me one of the craziest insights or something that you have made a book when you know.
1:22:05So the one which so there was a guy called Harshaj Shah he added a post in July 2025 on LinkedIn. So I put his post in the book Harshaj Shah's post. Harshaj Shah's post he showed that entry level salary into a decent white collar job. Graduate entry level salary into a decent white-collar job in the year basically 2.5 lakhs right construction worker in Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore working overtime in the year 5-6 lakhs right so his post went viral but leaving aside his post going viral I had 2-3 days his post didn't get out of mind because you know I know so many people inside my social circle where parents work so much, money, money and I know that 3 ,000 ,000 ,000 is what you get as an entry level graduate in most Indian companies.
1:23:05In fact, 20 years ago I got so much. 22 ,000, 30 years ago I first came to Mumbai to build a business in 2004. That's how much. Today I got so much. And today I got construction workers for 5 ,000 ,000. In fact, I'm asking you how much you earn from auto rickshaw driver. Most of the big cities in our country auto rickshaw driver earns 5 ,000 ,000 ,000 ,000 ,000. so that I felt a lot and in a way this is the break point right you start brainlessly mindlessly in a mode graduate and you find a job when you see in data that there is no benefit but then this is skewed data skewed is this is why data is entry level job a construction worker if entry level 5 lakh rupees कमाता है साल के और कोई जॉब करने जाता है माल लो एक इंजिनियर है या कोई भी X Y Z person वो ड़ही तीन लाक में लगता है तो जो तीन साल, चार साल, पाथ साल बाथ जब जॉब की जब पैसे बढ़ते हैं, construction worker तब भी उतना कमा रहा है, इस इंसान that point lovely point because you have made this mental model this at a superficial level seductive and this we like middle class we have worked through our 20s but data but in 10 years money is increasing eventually people make money but I will try to give you data story to give you the first thing is that again back to the government's income tax data that is showing that a typical middle class income tax filer, middle class defined as 5 lakhs se 1 crore kamane waale average filer ki kamai hai 10 lakh average income tax filer ki kamai hai 10 lakh, so therefore that youngster who graduates and gets a 2-3 lakh ka job if he ends up being the Indian average kareeban somewhere around 10-11 lakh point paunche ga remember to get to this point, jhaan peh usko graduate level job in li hai, which Azim Premji University data is telling us in 100 someone gets like this job who gets like this he gets 3 lakhs his parents have spent god knows for 21-22 years in that child's education so much they have a big 25 months exactly and then if he ends up being the average income tax payer he'll end up earning 10 ,000 ,000 ,000 now let's go back to the construction worker I agree with you if he's a whole construction worker to that will remain on 5 lakhs right but my reckoning is that person is far more likely to do something entrepreneurial and become your next Ash Mahapatra perhaps of business than the dude who is graduating because the graduate dude is self-selecting into a life of safety, structure, assured pay, bonus, promotion whereas the construction worker will say I will have road for overtime for 5-5 years but I'm putting this cement, this pipe what sort of can I become a middle man can I become a contractor so the people who refurbished my first house and I'm going to tell you the story the guy who refurbished my or decorated my first flat which I bought in Bombay in 2008 I bumped into him on the street two weeks ago he's now running his proper firm with 10 workers He is decorating our Pauai at any point in time 3-4 people's flats redecorate His son is working for the big four His daughter is an airline pilot One daughter is an airline pilot and his third daughter is fashion design His third child is fashion design Right?
1:26:57So he was and before he decorated my flat he was just a regular dude working for someone else doing up painting and painting for flats in Pauai so he moved from being a painter to hiring 2-3 people to do my flat up and now he runs a proper firm's local shopping mall his small shop is a big shop and after that big four airline pilot fashion design so I think that's where I think we need to reimagine that from this job the probabilities are far higher you'll rise by buying self-employed I appreciate that the data currently shows that the self-employed people are earning far less than the salaried workers.
1:27:40But I think salaried workers salaried workers real wage growth I think tough rahe ga because technology will put more and more pressure. Whereas the self-employed, the SME has provided that person is entrepreneurial. It's more than that. Interesting. Okay. These are all very negative. Positive or not? If you're an SME, if you're an entrepreneurial person, positive or positive? Because you're making business, you're big. Back to my childhood. I thought growing up business they're going to drink scotch and they're going to drink black money. That's changed. I'm doing business. I'm drinking white and I'm drinking juice in the night.
1:28:32Okay. So tell me now based on your experience and the data that you're collecting and everything that you're seeing now plus what you're seeing in the market globally where you see five six businesses which are going to be an opportunity specific and we'll talk about specific opportunity which you feel doesn't matter it's hard or it's very easy so So, so, first, first, I think, a very big opportunity will become and, you know, someone of the stature of Seah, Mukesh Ambani or Jensen Huang will grab it. So, let me explain a little bit. What's happening now? If you are a big company and you want your project done, you call up a TCS or an Accenture.
1:29:27They are big companies and they are a million people who put your whole app or your software integrate in your systems. Increasingly as AI does a lot of this work as Cloud or Anthropica Cloud or ChatGPT does a lot of the work especially for small and mid-sized companies who can't afford to hire a TCS or an Accenture they'll end up calling a smaller version of TCS Accenture and say I want a restaurant in South Africa chain. I have say, four fried chicken restaurants. And I have a customer servicing software. I have to add Swiggy Zomato in South Africa. I have to add software in AI. You can give me for five for five thousand dollars.
1:30:21Right? Now, now, I think and most more likely than not an Indian company should emerge and that company doesn't even have to have employees they'll just take the project and they'll have a network of gig workers on their books like Uber and they'll say who has to do it 5 days so you're giving maybe if if you're giving 5 ,000 dollars South Africa maybe this company will give 2 ,000 dollars and 3 ,000 dollars will keep it right and because remember that South Africa restaurant chain might necessarily not necessarily know how to use AI to create its software but it knows that it just has to call this or go to the website of this Indian company and put this work request there.
1:31:03So, this will become a colossal business. And I think if you take this business model to its logical extreme, I think it basically destroys the business models of the conventional IT services companies. So, I have some share of Accenture. So, hopefully before I don't go out, I'll do something. So, this is the first model. Now, I have said this in the context of coding. But this is just as applicable for say a company saying I have to give my employees marketing training right Raj you can make a curated set of podcast marketing training and our employees plastic pipe right and there will be someone like you who will know how to use available content AI and say absolutely we will make 24 hours for 5 hours training program on how to sell plastic pipes across India and that content will give you in four languages.
1:32:06So not just coding but knowledge, skilling of every sort there will be intermediaries who will emerge who will say we'll package it for you at low cost at high speed and give you whatever you need. So remember even for small businesses time is money. If you give me that market that training plan for my training content for my sales team two months from now that two months I didn't get to the sales team right and if you therefore give it to me two days from now I'm that much more inclined to give it to you and the more effective it is the more I will say the next time when you need it you will go to Raj or that small IT company which has made us Fortafort right and I think that this will end up being a colossal industry and I stress again I don't think you have to make a big company you just have to build a system where you sit at the heart of a network of content or content creators and you are booking the order, getting it done, getting the work out.
1:33:08So, this will become a big industry and a lot of the geek jobs will evolve around this. So, basically, think about Swiggy Zomato or Uber. This is Uber for white collar work. This is Uber for white collar work. And this can also be seen in many advertisements in India. The whole advert has made AI. right so the model is also AI lighting is also automatic so you can imagine the whole media houses of the future will be basically AI houses right and they'll specialize in maybe by product segment so India I think is a big play because why would you want to hire a Chicago based media house if you can get the same work done in Oshivada for one third the cost right and I think that will come and smart people across the world will say or Chicago based or Hollywood based media house we go to Oshi and do it in North Bombay.
1:34:00Okay, so this is a big value. Now, the next leg is using AI to create original content using the whole world of knowledge to create original content, original constructs, original intellectual property. I think China has been doing a big job. So, China has done in the last 10 years got their universities to spend a lot of money go and do berabari with America on intellectual property. So I'll give biotech half the biotech in the world is now new brand new divide comes from China 10 years ago it was zero it was all America China said that now the world is on the internet we are people who are why we will only make a phone and why we will only make a car we will sell a brand new intellectual property.
1:34:58Right. And I think we've got enough intellectual firepower in the country to do it. We need to spend the money on it. Now I'm not so sure the government will spend the money. But I think our corporate should spend the money. So American companies sell 700 billion dollars in research, R &D. Indian companies sell 20 billion dollars. Right. One thirty fifth. Right. plenty of our companies have enough and more money balance sheet in cash stock market how much you want to take it but the owner is saying no, you don't have to take it R &D, I don't know if it will be something that will be useful so that's the old biscuit that will be made 15 % profit margin so my life will go down I think a new generation of entrepreneurs will say screw this let's either raise the money from private equity or the stock market or borrow the money and throw it at R &D because we have seen China do it with no or limited help from America.
1:36:03China has built an R &D machine which as I said in biotech they are doing berabari and probably 20 years later biotech's all the data will be made and then we will say where are we going to be? We are taking this. They are saying if you want data then we will give it. So it's a choice of ours as a country either we spend the money on R &D and it's a choice for our promoters not so much for our government or we get left behind right so this is another I think it's very exciting possibility that maybe in the next 20 years we will have a path of R &D where an entrepreneur will say why am I not the world leader in for example auto ancillary technology right and the third aspect is in the line of work what I do I think that the whole world will manage the whole world from now to 10-20 years will manage the whole world of money will be managed from India.
1:36:52Because if AI is going to, if technology is going to do a lot of the management, why should we be left behind in figuring out how technology can manage money? Right? When people manage money before the people, people think I'll give money to my type. If I'm a French national, I'll trust a lot in French people. I won't trust a lot in Indian people. But if anyway, gradually the managing of money will go to first ETFs, index funds and then AI. So what is it needed? Is it Indian AI or British AI? So financial services banking. So Revolue is a bank in London. It's an AI driven bank run out of London.
1:37:38It's also in India. In this way, Indian AI driven financial services institutions will go global. and a lot of people especially younger people are not going to care that this is AI Indian because the LLM is most likely American and above that LLM someone has done something interesting useful provided I can see it is reliable and it's regulated by the Swedish regulator or the European regulator or the US regulator the fact that there's an Indian company behind it doesn't matter so the ability to do things which are global because remember we are the benefit of the modern wave of technologies, we in India are getting the latest technology.
1:38:20We can't say we are back. Technology is getting where we are back. The utilization of technology for doing science, for doing R &D, for doing research. We are very content to do the day-to-day earn the 15-20 % return on capital and say we have sold something. The Chinese are saying we are not content to the day-to-day we will use technology push it to its limits and and create brand new intellectual property which we will monetize and nicho do the world so if you research monetize the mindset is not left behind then we'll get left behind and again i think that's the mindset shift we need to do rather than doing it services rather than just doing generic rather than just doing copy paste or financial services if you are willing to take the risk do the extra effort come up with brand new intellectual property then there's a global market for it how far do you think India is to America and China per capita income China is 5x America is 30x per capita income but I've watched China close the gap with America and especially on the knowledge and IP front.
1:39:41I watched China close the gap with America over the last 20 years. And I watched America itself pull away from Europe over the last 20 years. And if I go back further in time, that 1880 to 1930 I saw if I read 1880 1880 Britain was the world's preeminent superpower. That was the world. in Britain by 19, in fact 1880 if you read the US descriptions it's a teacher country, it's a poor poor, it's in the underworld, it's a poor fight with another, it's a war by 1930 they were the world's preeminent superpower so in 50 years they had a whole set of power and then over the last 20 years China in 2004 was nothing basically they were a sweatshop for American jobs, China in 2026, the new biotech data in the world is born there.
1:40:42So India, do you think if you compare the 1800s of America and 2004 of China, those things were the right things, is India also the right things? So I'll give you the good answer. Some things we're doing right, some things where I'm understanding, we're doing wrong. So let's quickly discuss the positive things we're doing. the whole angel venture capital private equity this is positive shark tank story 1 million entrepreneurs a year right so if you look at American and Chinese culture the early stages of growth take off because these are ultimately entrepreneurs start ups and that person is ready to take risk right because with the best friend in the world the angel is not gonna call up you know he's not gonna call up HDFC bank he's not gonna call up TCS middle managers he's not gonna do that right he looks he wants someone he's saying I have left my job I'm taking my life I'm not giving you so in our country that world is getting better and very similar to America 1880s China China of 25 years ago right that's a positive thing and it's very difficult by the way manufacture this a lot of European countries France, Germany have been very successful and they say you become entrepreneurial and they say no, they don't have to become entrepreneurial and they don't have to be so you can't manufacture this there is a cultural element that is especially in our country the age group of 25 years and it's interesting it's not just Gujaratis, Maharwadis, Sindhis I'm seeing Udiyas, Bengalis, Marathis, Tamils all are doing and everyone has a joke that we are entrepreneur and we need more of this we need to king size this ambition which is negative piece now there are so many rules so many regs and so many red tape that people are crazy so I have cited in the book because I still can't believe it so if you have in our office in the pantry if we put a chula even induction cooktop if you cook hot food you cook food you need a license right FSAI license you can make tea it's hot in the kettle but if you you make you make you make you make with your annual inspection license fee thankfully fee but fee but you have inspection right if you put a chiller not the fridge but if you put a chiller where cold drinks cold drinks your office staff cold drinks dheke kholke pye uske libe license alag see right ah woh kuch license state government deeti hai kuch center deeti hai fs ai deeta kuchka annual renewal kuch i think 2 sal mein renew ho ta kuchka her sal inspection hooga kuchka 2 sal chow chow ke right to hum nne decide kya yaar hum aisa hum kuch sar dar di chahi hi so we decided it, what is the difference between someone who has ordered you?
1:44:00Now, what is the difference? Somebody could have easily got a job in millions of small small firms like Marcelas, cooking in the kitchen, cooking Maggi, making ananda toast in the morning. So, that job will not be done because there are crazy rules. Now, who is the best I don't understand. If someone is listening to the government, please, ask for this These are the rules which kill jobs. So, in our book, we have cited. There's a portfolio company of ours. Famous portfolio company. I don't have the name of the company because it will be created for them. It will be created in Noida. So, they were created in 1995.
1:44:40And now, it's a big company. It's a billion dollars market cap. But the founder was telling me when he created the firm in 1995. Around the year 2000. Because Noida is part of UP. So, a inspector came from UP. So, he said, where is your spittoon? so we didn't get into spit so I didn't get into spit and then it was violation and we should have spit in any workplace in any workplace you should have spit in the place so in India there is law that in a factory or workplace you have to have a place for people to spit and if someone doesn't eat our food that's not written in law so you didn't make spit in the law so you have to pay up a small fine so in our country in the office there are thousands of things where the whole purpose is to create some new things.
1:45:30some inspector something happens in your office. that's why I said that we will not make hot food in our office. you order it. but if you make it yourself. no, I don't have license for that. we don't have anything in the microwave. we have a non-wedge microwave. we have a hot food. we will make a kettle of tea. but you know I don't want the authority of inspector coming and saying you have to eat your food in your life license so we need you asked me for the positive this is not the fact that it was not 1880 in America to be fair probably not today I did a podcast with Sagar Wow Momos they told me that in India there are fewer licenses for for taking a gun there are fewer licenses for restaurants Wow imagine imagine in Bombay there are 70 licenses for the hotel to run in Bombay and you and I know for each of those licenses what you have to do so unless you are a big guy Taj or Oberoi right Indian hotels or such for a regular to start a 3 star hotel in Bombay 70 license 60-70 license I immediately know what that means you think you are talking to a restaurant hotel so that's why no one opens So, the one who opens is the other way around that, brother, let's see what happens.
1:46:56And then we ask why are you not making jobs? Because if you open a three-star hotel you will be difficult to open a hotel not only does that mean shortage of three-star hotels which means that room rates are$100 -$200 and$7000 -$800 where our office is in Andhiri East comfortably$100 a night is a three-star hotel. 3 star hotel 9 ,400 and that is that is Andheri Andheri East right which whilst I love the place because my office is there it's not BKC BKC in 3 star hotel there is nothing I think BKC in 5 star hotel okay so we want we want the world to come and do business we want to be competitive but hey if you want to you are a business traveler and you want to stay for less than 100 dollars a night I'm sorry this will not happen you will get to the seat or airport.
1:47:50Don't create a job. But that's the way it'll be. This sort of nonsense is what screws us. In the book, I have given a lot of cross country data. In India, the cost of land is the cost of Vietnam. It's 40 % less. In states like Maharashtra and Gujarat, the cost of industrial land is almost the same as Western Europe. right so Vietnam in the land cost 40-50 % because there's a new rule that doesn't ramp the cost of the land they figured out that if the land is less then the factory will be jobs will be made, money will be we will gain something in that cost of working capital right cost of working capital let's go 3 % in the US but it's Amir country China 3 % in the US it's a big country in Vietnam in our country you will not get 11-12 % working capital so if you have rules on regs cost of land, cost of working capital if we can address that combine that with this 1 million entrepreneurs a year so what can it be so that's why in 1991 where's Naipaul road, India a million mutinies now I was in class 9-10 I had a big deal in the country I didn't know how much I was in the country because people, million mutinators have to move forward.
1:49:16And everybody was damn angry. 1990, 1991. He goes, what the hell? Why can't I move forward? Then Banh Mohan Singh Ji and P.V. Narasimha Rao, they opened up the country. 1991. Now we have to say, million entrepreneurs are becoming every year. Those million entrepreneurs are saying, give us less red tape, give us cheaper capital, give us cheaper land. We can do what we can do. We can make a job for people. We can make a country. We are not doing that. Interesting. Well, cheaper capital is always a question of entrepreneur. Cheaper capital can be made with our podcast. But we can not make that. There are many things.
1:49:54I was speaking to somebody. I forgot. I can't remind you. I have so many people talking about this day. It's a good mix. It's a good mix. They said what they said. They said what they said. That's fine. It's a good thing. I remember the good thing. And they said that if you reduce the cost of capital, if you reduce the cost of capital, you get down to a lot of the country's upside down. It's not that you can reduce the cost of capital. It's a big deal, right? Because in today's date, where Bombay's bond market is, Andhra Pradesh State Government. Andhra Pradesh is a decent state. Andhra Pradesh State Government is borrowing 8 % in Bombay's bond market.
1:50:36So if you think that you're a small company, you're taking the state government 8%, that will take 12 to 13 12 to 13 that will take Vietnamese 13 to 13 that will take 4 to 14 that will compete so how will it do so now somebody has to go and tell our government central and state to borrow the government will borrow I will do projects like this if I don't do my impact will come from so deep I don't have an easy answer but you asked me what is the chance that we will pull off China or USA it is a chance because our entrepreneurship story is solid is very much data that is solid money and equity funding is getting decent problem is lots of rules and regs and the money and the working capital if you have to break these three steps from one to one rules and regs a half years ago in February 25th budget Nenimala Ji said that the committee will be left rules and regs to remove the rules and regs now there is not any special news so hopefully if that committee is on the work, she will finish that work and rules and eggs will be done.
1:51:44Give the cost of capital, we will take the rules. Okay, fair enough. That's a fair trade-off. That's the Cindy businessman speaking. It's easy to do. We will take a lot of things. We will take a lot of things. Well, thank you so much. My pleasure. Thank you once again. It's fun to talk to you. It's always a pleasure to talk to you. Thank you Raj.
