---

Key Themes and Concepts

Health and Wellness Interests

  • Background Influence:
  • Blake Griffin attributes his passion for nutrition and wellness to his mother, who he describes as having extensive knowledge akin to a nutritionist.
  • He grew up in an environment focused on healthy eating, which included drinking green barley and consuming alternative health foods.

Biohacking

  • Definition and Interest:
  • Biohacking is presented as a method to enhance personal health and potentially slow the aging process.
  • Griffin expresses excitement about research in this area, emphasizing its life-changing potential.
  • Research Approach:
  • He engages in extensive research rather than personal experimentation, focusing on understanding the implications of what he consumes.

Food Sensitivity Testing

  • Personal Experience:
  • Griffin shares that he undertook food sensitivity tests which revealed he should limit his egg consumption due to a sensitivity.
  • He elaborates that heightened consumption of a specific food can lead to sensitivity because of the body’s inability to produce enough acid to digest it effectively.
  • Variety in Diet:
  • Emphasizes the importance of dietary variety to prevent food sensitivities and ensure the body operates efficiently.

Perspectives on Microwaving Food

  • Health Concerns:
  • Griffin strongly criticizes microwaving, suggesting it depletes nutritional value and introduces unwanted substances into food.
  • He advocates for avoiding microwaves in favor of more traditional cooking methods.

Personal Dietary Practices

  • Dietary Flexibility:
  • Discusses a strict diet during the NBA season, but acknowledges the need for balance and occasional indulgences.
  • He makes a point of not strictly eliminating any food group completely, opting instead to limit them as necessary for mental well-being.

His thoughts on biohacking and food sensitivities highlight modern approaches to health, while his strong stance against microwaving food underscores a growing awareness of how cooking methods impact nutrition. Overall, the episode provides a rich perspective on the intersection of professional athletics and personal health practices.

1:01Blake Griffin:Hey, it's Thursday, which means we're coming at you with a short feel-good story from a past guest. Hope you enjoyed the clip. This week, NBA star Blake Griffin.

1:14Blake Griffin:I was talking to your brother yesterday, and he was telling me you geek out on, like, anything nutrition-related. You obviously have this podcast, The Pursuit of Healthiness. on the health and wellness front outside of the obvious what really interests you I sort of

1:33Graham Bensinger:recently have been super into biohacking aspect of health and wellness just because I think there's so much potential there for like people to literally change the course of their lives like dramatically you know people are going to start living longer I think when you say reverse aging people kind of like go nuts because it sounds so insane but you'll be able to slow down aging i think that's so interesting like the biomechanics of things and and cell and dna breakdown and and just how how thing how modern medicine hopefully can move forward in what ways are you starting to get into that honestly just research not not necessarily doing it myself yeah i kind of have to be pretty careful with like you know what i put in my body i never want to take something that I haven't fully researched and known, will know what's going to be on a drug test or not.

2:25Graham Bensinger:So I stay pretty safe in terms of things that I take, but I have started to listen to a lot of different podcasts or books or articles or studies on all that stuff.

2:37Blake Griffin:But on that front and what you put into your body, tell about these food sensitivity tests you'll take and how that was also partly responsible for reducing the amount of eggs you eat. Early on, I would take these food sensitivity tests, and one year, it was like, eggs was in the red.

2:52Graham Bensinger:I'm sorry, anything that's in the red, like, you have to sort of, like, really cut out of your diet or really reduce. And I eat eggs every morning. And so it kind of changed my thought process. And what I learned over time wasn't necessarily that, like, oh, you're just born with this sensitivity. It's that your stomach produces acid to break down these foods. and when you eat something a lot, it's trying to produce enough acid to break down this certain type of food, and when it can't break it all down, some of that seeps through your gut. That is what makes you sort of sensitive in, like, a very dumbed-down way of, like, explaining it, I guess.

3:28Graham Bensinger:I really learned that most of this stuff is about variety, making sure you don't just eat the same thing over and over. If you eat grilled chicken, broccoli, and brown rice every single meal, you will be sensitive to those things after a while, and your body won't be running as efficiently as possible. My day kicks off with a refreshing Celsius energy drink, then straight to the gym. Pre-K pickup, back home to meal prep. Time for my fire station shift. One more Celsius, got to keep the lights on. When the three alarm hits, I'm ready. Celsius. Live, fit, go. Grab a cold, refreshing Celsius at your local retailer or locate now at Celsius.com.

4:34Blake Griffin:The deal with you in microwaves is what...

4:37Graham Bensinger:It's terrible for your food. Not only are you taking a good amount of the nutrition out of food, but you're also putting things in that I don't think were necessarily meant to, or doing things to the food that I don't think were necessarily meant to be digesting or putting into our bodies. If I had my way, I wouldn't even have a microwave in my house, but I have one.

5:02Blake Griffin:So you grew up in Oklahoma in the 90s, and yet your mom was having you drink, like, green barley even back then. So she was well ahead of her time on all fronts.

5:15Graham Bensinger:I always described my mom as, like, as being close to a nutritionist without having the certification. Like, she was always reading, like, a nutrition book, always, you know, trying new things. We would go to the health food store growing up. We had, like, the healthy cereals. Our house was the house that friends didn't want to spend the night at because of the meals the next morning.

5:38Blake Griffin:But, like, explain just how strict you are with your diet and season, and then how, over time, you've learned the need to balance it and give yourself flexibility in the offseason.

5:51Graham Bensinger:Early on, like, during the season, I was so strict, and then I realized that I had to, like, sort of pick and choose my spots. If I come home after a game and I'm just tired and I want to eat pizza, I'll eat pizza. I never say, oh, I don't eat any dairy or I don't eat any gluten. I try to limit some of those things sometimes. Every now and then I have to just do what you want to do with your diet just to sort of keep myself sane.
