0:37This week, Charles Barkley. The clip you're about to hear is trending on our Instagram right now. Hope you enjoy. You mentioned your father and graduation and your father, you know, not really being around. Your mother said in your autobiography that, you know, he just couldn't cope with the responsibility of fatherhood. but I think he left when... Oh, I don't even remember when he left, to be honest with you. But I want to make this clear. We're great today. We both made some mistakes. You know, hey, listen, I shouldn't have been angry at him. Sometimes it just doesn't work. That doesn't mean you get mad at your dad if it didn't work.
1:19So I was wrong on that point, but he could have been a better father. But today we're cool. What was the most difficult part of that relationship for you to kind of become at peace with to move forward? The most difficult part is he came back in after I was already Charles Barkley. And I didn't think that he deserved to come in on that part. when we would play the Lakers, you know, have hundreds and thousands of people screaming in my name, adulation, things like that, playing against the Magic Kareem, James Worth, and all those guys. I didn't feel like, because he wasn't there when I was poor.
2:04That was the toughest thing. It's kind of like anybody. You come in for the parade, not for all the stuff to put the parade together. Do you remember some of the tough times? Like I know in the book, you wrote about how, in the book you wrote many years ago, but you wrote about how I think you were in like 10th grade, and he called you up one Christmas saying he's sending a present home. Yeah, I think things like that was very disappointing, because he would always say he was going to send stuff. But I think in fairness to him, he got married and had a different family. But it was frustrating when he said that he was going to do stuff and then do it.
2:46That was very difficult, to be honest with you. Like I say, man, we were poor. You know, I was a single mother with three kids, three boys. And kids, as we know, they're expensive. I think it was your uncle Simon who was dying, had terminal cancer. and he said something to you that really kind of impacted your relationship with your dad, right? My uncle had said, hey, listen, you and your dad need to at least be friends. And I thought that was, and I agree with that. I do agree with that. Because like I say, when your mom and dad gone, like. When you want your spring break to feel like. and your kid's pool day to feel like and your hotel bed to feel like ooh, and room service to feel like because at Hilton, hospitality feels like your cabana's ready.
