In short

Jay Leno recalls getting fired at age 16 from Wilmington Ford as a lot boy (hubcaps stolen by kids), then writing to Henry Ford II (“Hank the Deuce”) to ask for his job back; later he describes how buying and fixing a 1934 Ford pickup at 14 sparked his lifelong car passion, and how his father’s Ford dealership purchase in 1966 led to a police pursuit–spec 2-door Galaxy with a muffler delete and cop package, plus a ticket for 110 mph.

Guests

Key claims

1:20Right. And you get fired and you write a letter to Henry Ford. Oh, no, I was 16. I was working at Wilmington Ford, and I was the lot boy, which means it was one of those acres of cars, you know, like three acres of new Fords, you know. And every morning you're going to have to put all the hubcaps on and every night take them off because kids would steal the hubcaps. That's when the cars had hubcaps. They don't have hubcaps anymore. Okay. So one day I'm carrying, I've got a stack of hubcaps like this, and the used car salesman comes on the corner bangs into me hey you don't treat it you're fired you're fired I go you banged into me so I was so embarrassed I didn't tell my parents I got fired pretend I was like a 40 year old guy you know I pretended to go to work every day after school and I just go somewhere and hide and you were genuinely embarrassed oh yeah I didn't tell my parents I got fired and I wrote a letter to Henry Ford the second Hank the Deuce and all the people on the, my dad's got a Galaxy.

2:21My mom's got a Falcon. I'm saving for a Mustang. I'm a Ford guy. I wanted to work at the Ford, blah, blah, blah, blah. I send these letters off. I know it's about seven, eight days later, I go from Ben Restuscia. He owned it. He goes, I don't know who you know at Ford, but we want your job back. So Hank the Deuce, Henry Ford has sent a letter, said, what's this kid doing? Give him his job back. And he hired me back. This episode is brought to you by ChatGPT. 3:50Well, that's where I bought my 34 Ford pickup. I was 14. I bought that when I was 14. It took two years to get it running, and that was going to be my car to drive. In what ways do you think it was that that started off your passion for cars? Well, because that's what started. I mean, you have to remember, growing up in a little town in New England, there was really not a lot to do. So cars were your whole life. You know, back then, cars were the culture, you know, fun, fun, fun by the Beach Boys, little GTO, Jan and Dean. I mean, even guys who knew nothing about cars pretended to because it was the connection to popular culture.

4:26Girls like guys with cars, you know, blah, blah, blah, all that kind of stuff. So that's why I bought it, so I would have something to drive when I got to be 16. And you slowly fixed it up. Yeah, yeah, I paid$350 for it, yeah. My idiot friend, who you spoke to. And we went for driving my truck, and he got out and he slammed the door, and they did not have modern glass. It was just plate glass in the 30s. So the window just shattered. So I'm thinking, oh, boy. So I'm parked at school, and of course I'm staring out the window where I can see the parking lot, where I can see my car, and it starts to rain.

5:08I'm thinking, oh, jeez. Oh, my new upholstery. So that's about a half hour rain. I see my parents pull up. My dad's got some, and I can see him. I can't hear him, but I know he's yelling. Yell at my mother. No, hold up, don't yell. The two of them are fighting to cover the car. I just started crying. What? Well, because my dad left the office, picked up my mother to go cover my car because it just puts us upholstery in it. So it's just, yeah, small town stuff. But still to this day, it gets you. Oh, yeah, to this day, it gets me. My dad was not a car guy. My dad would buy what was ever in the showroom.

5:45You know, what is on the ladder? That's fine. You know, I remember when since 64, we went to look at a Cadillac. Cadillac was$44.50 for Cadillac. And my dad offered them$44.25 and they wouldn't take it. So my dad was so annoyed at that. So we go to the Ford dealership. Now, this is 1966 now. I'm going to be getting my license. So you walk in, and it's all Mustangs and Falcons on the, Tom Lawrence was the salesman, Shawsheen Motors, it was, in Andover, Massachusetts. One of the other says, where's the big cars? Where's the Galaxies? We don't have any on the floor, Mr. Lotto. Oh, let's go to the Chevy deal.

6:24Well, you can order one. I want one. I go, Pop, let's order it. Order a car, you know. Dad, this way you get exactly what you want. Oh, okay. I said, can I pick the engine? And my mother said, oh, let the boy pick the engine. What difference does it make? So I take Tom aside, and I go, Tom, We went to the two-door galaxy with the police pursuit package. What the 420 engine, muffler delete option, heavy-duty radiator, cop suspension, cop brake. You know, all just this ridiculous car. My father, oblivious. Six weeks later, the car comes in. My father goes, bucket seats? I don't want bucket seats.

7:00Well, this model comes with bucket seats. All right, fine. Yeah, I'm fine. He gets to the car. He turns the key. there's a hole in the muffler it's a brand new car he's screaming no Mr. Lemony you wanted the muffler delete option what do you mean muffler delete why would I do the police pursuit my father goes now my father's furious so he gets in the car and goes just get in the damn car let's get out of here he steps in the car and goes he's sliding on the show floor he goes it's a rocket ship it's a damn rocket ship he's just screaming He's just furious at me. So he gets home, he doesn't speak to me for like a week.

7:40So then I'm in his bedroom looking for something, and I see a ticket on his bureau. And he got a ticket for going 110 in the car. Because my dad, when he took it to the office, all the younger guys went crazy. Oh, this is the hot car, the 428, the C6 automatic. He got police pursuit package, this thing is real. So he took him out for a ride, took him out to 110, and then got nailed by the cops, you know, but it was very funny. As always, thanks for listening.
