Notable examples
he recalls racing Toyota Pro Celebrity with his dad, aggressive Trans Am driving with Paul Genolosi (Rocket Sports), and a Virginia City run where bee stings and desert heat triggered memories of his mother and “adventure” as the “nectar.”

This week, Josh Broland.
1:19Josh Brolin:I know you said you were bad at sports growing up, but as I understand it, you were quite the surfer. I was an okay surfer. You were finishing in like top place in competitions. Yeah, but I was WSA and NSSA. I was taken around by Tommy Curran, who became one of the greatest surfers. He became the best surfer in the world. But I love surfing. I still love surfing. I love the ocean. I love the sea. The sea on Earth to me reminds me of my mother in this world. It's emotional. It's super calm. I can always count that it's going to be, there's going to be something going on. And I don't know why that's the case.
2:00Josh Brolin:And it just is. So I'm down at the water every day that I can be. Which is how often? At least a couple of times a day right now. At least. I mean, I got in the ocean the other night. It was cold, but I don't care. I need to be saturated in that. You race cars? I was better at that. So you and your dad were both champions of the Toyota Pro Celebrity Race. Yeah, which is fun. I mean, that's a fun fact. He was a good driver. He was a very different driver than I was. I was a much more aggressive driver, of course. He was a guy who kind of figured people out and would hang back, and then he'd pass everybody like the last two laps, whereas I was more aggressive.
2:50Josh Brolin:But yeah, I was talking with, you know, Paul Genelosi in Rocket Sports and driving the Trans Am circuit. Oh, like real deal. Yeah, I was kind of like, in my mind, I was, if that was a viable profession for me, I would have probably quit acting at that point. I wasn't working a lot. I wasn't working on things that really moved me. So yeah. And what happened? I started working. Okay. And Paul was like, I can't kill this guy who everybody's kind of looking up to now all of a sudden. The number of speeding tickets you've gotten in your life is what? Kayak gets my flight, hotel, and rental car right.
3:32Josh Brolin:So I can tune out travel advice that's just plain wrong. Bro, Skycoin. Way better than points. Never fly during a Scorpio full moon. Just tell the manager you'll sue. Instant room upgrade. Stop taking bad travel advice. Start comparing hundreds of sites with Kayak and get your trip right. Bad advice? You talking to me? Kayak. Got that right. 4:10Josh Brolin:Max$100 cash back per month. See terms at Venmo.me slash stashterms. I've never gotten a speeding ticket. Bullshit. That's not true. I did As You Like It at the International Libraro Theater, which was quite good. I have gotten, early on I got a ton of speeding tickets. I was always on the verge of getting my license taken away for many, many, many, many years. And I haven't gotten a speeding ticket for a long time now. A long time. But I ride with a bunch of guys. I ride choppers with a bunch of guys. Like, I'm going to leave here. I'm going to go to my buddy Toby Morse's house. I'm going to do a little workout.
4:53Josh Brolin:And Toby's the lead singer of H2L. And then I'll go from there to my buddy Brian's house. And then tomorrow we leave to our chopper event at Pappy and Harriet. What do you enjoy about biking? Everything. Everything. It terrifies me. People out there terrify me. The way they drive, looking at their phones, all that kind of stuff. So if I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it with a really loud group with really old bikes that have no buffers on them. And you know we're there. But I go back to this place. My wife said it recently. She was like, I went to London and I was working in London. And then I came back and we moved and I was in the kids and the first day of school and school period and all you get caught up in that.
5:40Josh Brolin:And she was like, you need to go ride. And I was like, because I had a little meltdown one night, and I was like, where are all my friends? Like, we moved, I don't have any friends anymore. And she was like, go ride, go ride, go ride. And I did, and yeah, it just righted everything. There's something about being on a bike, on an old bike. And you have some cool ones. I mean, I got a 37 knucklehead, I have a 56 panhead, I have a 68 shovelhead, and a 47 knucklehead. And the 37 knucklehead is like my tank. It just doesn't break. It just doesn't. And we're on the side of the road a lot, fixing each other's bikes and all that.
6:24Josh Brolin:But yeah, there's just something, the rumble, the wind in your hair, very tough to describe. I've tried to do it in the book. It took me a long time because it's just this visceral thing that takes over. And it's just the world is good. Describe feeling your mom's presence out there. On the bike? Which happens. I mean, I wrote in the story, you know, it just went back and forth. That's where I found the story because I was on a run to Virginia City, Nevada, for the Chopper's Magazine event there. And I was getting stung by bees. And we're going through Mojave Desert. and it feels like it's 180 degrees out and you're totally sunburned and you're begging God to not let your bike break down because you're going to be out in the middle of nowhere and just scorch and just turn into a piece of ash.
7:19Josh Brolin:And suddenly my mom will, you know, all the travels and all the time on the road that I spent with her and all the conversations and all the laughs and all the stopping at, you know, those gold mining towns that we would go to and she'd give me a quarter and I could pull it on the slot machine when nobody was looking. Very colorful, very colorful time. And it just reminded me like the adventure is everything, man. The adventure is, it's all in the adventure. That's the nectar. As always, thanks for listening.
