Guests

Guest backgrounds
Payton was hired as a young head coach for the Saints after Katrina; he later collaborated with offensive staff and targeted players to overcome major injury risk.
Key claims
Brees’ injury was unprecedented for a quarterback; the Saints had to “overpay” and believed Brees’ “makeup” would enable a comeback. Payton says the Dolphins doctors gave a low chance of returning at the same level. He describes choosing New Orleans over Miami despite surface-level advantages.
Notable examples
Payton’s lost tour around town with Brees’ wife; driving through Lakeview after the 17th Street Canal levee break; seeing houses removed from foundations and a tugboat blocking a road.

It's Friday, which means we get to share with you another one of our most popular clips from a past interview. This week, Sean Payton. The clip you're about to hear is trending on our Instagram right now. Hope you enjoy. Drew Brees, one of the greatest free agent signings in history.
1:19What do you think you saw that others didn't? We all saw a talented player. We all saw great work ethic. We all saw great makeup. Honestly, and I'm trying to be fair to that question, he had an injury that was unprecedented at his position. There was no other quarterback that had a completely torn shoulder, the injured shoulder the way he had. We were a team, remember now, we're back to, we're trying to find coaches and players that want to come. Right. I mean, so was it more you were willing to take more risk? We're Jerry Maguire with the goldfish saying, who's coming? Yeah. All right. And we're looking for anybody who's coming.
2:00So with Drew, we had to be, we had to overpay. And I don't mean that we had to be aggressive in our pursuit of Drew because we weren't winning the jump balls. And so, but man, we saw all these traits though. and the one thing we said was if there's going to be a player to overcome an injury like that it's going to be the makeup it's going to be drew breeze it's going to be someone wired like drew a lot of teams a lot of doctors you know were looking at me and saying yeah i'm not sure if you're gonna be able to come back and play again you know that's actually what the miami dolphins doctors had told saban was it probably had a 25 chance of coming back and playing and you know, being at the same level.
2:42So listen, I knew it was going to be a long road and I knew that whoever was going to sign me needed to have a vision, you know, and also some patience. So just a lot of trust, a lot of faith and a lot of belief, you know, on the part of the saints and Sean Payton. How bad of a fail was it the first time you took him and his wife around town? I struggled. Well, I didn't, I didn't know my way around. And so here I'm given the tour and I I should have been the tourist rather than the tour guide. We got lost. We were driving too long. We went to the North Shore, got lost on the South Shore. Brittany was falling asleep in the back seat, and I'm like, I might as well just drive him to the airport now.
3:17We're losing him. He took us to the place where he was building, which was on the North Shore, and he was on his way back. And on his way back, he just took a wrong turn and ended up in the Lakeview neighborhood, which is one of the more historic neighborhoods in this city, and yet it was one of the ones that hit the hardest from the storm. It was right there at the 17th Street Canal that levee broke, and it literally just took houses off of foundations. And so we're driving through neighborhoods, and literally it's like you see a concrete slab and no house, or you see a house and it's got a truck upside down in the living room in it.
3:53And at one point we make a turn, and there's a tugboat in the middle of the road, and we can't go around it, so we have to turn around and go another direction. And yet, my wife and I looked at each other and we felt like, you know, this decision is much less about football than it is about being the part of a resurgence of a city and of a, you know, a great community. And you felt that way even immediately because, and I guess I'm asking that, but as Sean was saying, before I took the job, I mean, I had my mindset on becoming head coach of the Packers. You know, Drew, a guy who's been in San Diego the past several years, he wants to go to the sunshine in Miami.
4:32So how limited maybe was the interest initially and how quickly did that start to change on your end? Well, just on the surface, you know, on the surface, when I was called by my agent and said, all right, you've got two visits, two opportunities here. It's between the New Orleans Saints, you know, coming off of, you know, Hurricane Katrina, right? And a terrible season. Yeah. City completely destroyed, organization in complete disarray. The hiring of this young head coach, you know, this young coach from Dallas. Nobody knows who he is, right? versus going to Miami. They'd won their last seven games in a row.
5:13Nick Saban had the defense rolling. Offensively, I knew a bunch of the guys on their staff. They were running the same system we were running in San Diego. So just on the surface, you would have thought, Miami's the obvious choice. But once I had a chance to be here, to see what my wife and I saw with the city, to meet the people here, to spend time with Coach Payton, obviously that was a huge part of it because Sean immediately let me know that this was going to be a collaboration, this was going to be a group effort. When it came to the offense, he wanted to take all the things that I had done in San Diego and was good at and was comfortable with, and then incorporate that into his style of offense.
5:52And I just got the feeling that they really, really wanted me, and that I was their guy, and Sean had kind of handpicked me to be the guy to take on this challenge. So that meant a lot to me. Toughest part of the relocation for you and your family would be what? Well, it was just my wife and I at the time.
7:10So actually, this was an interesting journey. It was kind of a journey into the unknown. We had no idea what to expect with New Orleans. But everyone who we encountered, just members of the community, people who were out and about, none of them said anything about the saints. they were all just saying, thank you for considering being a part of this community. That struck me. I thought that was really interesting and unique to this area, in that some of these people have been here for generations and generations, right? You know, they would never leave. It's just, man, it's just woven into the fabric of who they are, you know, and this way of life and this culture and this pride.
7:52So that was something, too, that was really special for Brittany and I, just to feel like we were really going to be a part of a community here. As always, thanks for listening.
