In short

Two New York health/wellness influencers explain how personal health crises became their missions, then discuss what drives them crazy in the wellness space (perfectionism, misinformation, “grandma did it” arguments) and practical “controllables” habits (trigger-food management, product ingredient literacy, and realistic swaps). They also preview a planned Part 2 on depression and suicide ideation.

Guests

Hunter Stoler (Health With Hunter) started 6 years ago after cystic acne, fatigue, and weight gain; lost 50 lbs via Weight Watchers structure, then became a certified health coach sharing whole-food, ingredient-focused swaps. Josaira Santiago-Hines (Josaira) is a nurse with Hashimoto’s who suffered severe postpartum complications after COVID in 2020, including prolonged hospitalization, medication-related harm (gabapentin/Xanax), suicide attempt, and later recovery through integrative care and metaphysical healing.

Key claims

“Control the controllables”; social media is a highlight reel; you can’t copy routines and expect identical results; lead-in-food fear ignores cofactors; trace lead is different from lead paint.

Notable examples

throwing out Oreos/Skippy/vegetable oil after learning ingredients; salt-cave “licking” backlash; removing trigger foods from the home; red light shower use; Weight Watchers “zero point” foods; Josaira’s 4-day labor, 10-day separation from baby, and ICU/psych ward experiences.

0:00Welcome to the Just Ingredients podcast. I'm Cara Lynn, and here we dive deep into the journey of healing and wellness. If you're ready to learn, feel empowered, and take charge of your health, you're in the right place. Welcome back to the show, everyone. Today, I have two friends and two health and wellness influencers who are here all the way from New York. They have traveled here to do fun things in Utah, and they are kind enough to do a quick podcast with us. And so thank you so much for being here, you guys. So we have Hunter and Josira, and I'm going to let them tell you about their Instagram, what their handle is, but also why they even started in this crazy world of being a health and wellness influencer.

0:45And so, Hunter, we'll just start with you.

0:47Hunter Stoler:Yes, thank you so much for having me. I have loved your company, Just Ingredients, for years. So it's so surreal to be here. My username is Health With Hunter. And I started six years ago when I started my weight loss journey. I had cystic acne. I was always fatigued, always tired. And I had no idea what to do. And I didn't even think that there was a possibility I could feel a different way. And I thought that just feeling that way every single day was the norm for me. and it was in college when we got sent home our junior year for COVID. And I truly just did a complete 180 with my life. And I joined Weight Watchers, which helped me with my, you know, structure with nutrition.

1:28Hunter Stoler:And it's great at providing structure with flexibility. And I learned about portion control, what foods to prioritize. And when I tell you, I went from eating the most ultra processed diet to eating pretty much predominantly single ingredient foods and also better free snacks and protein shakes and things like that, the body fat literally melted off of me because my body went from getting the most ultra processed diet to learning about how to feel my body properly. And I started finding exercises that I loved that I still do today. And I was so inspired after I lost 50 pounds to become a certified health coach and start sharing my life on social media.

2:06Oh, I love that. So I actually did not know you joined Weight Watchers. They give you points for certain foods that you eat, but they don't provide the food, correct?

2:14Hunter Stoler:They used to provide snacks and they might still do. The ingredients in those snacks are horrific. Well, that's what I was wondering because you teach all about like eating real food and looking at the ingredients. So that's the question I was leading into was, wait a sec, tell me about Weight Watchers. So Weight Watchers at first, I never bought their food. They have snack bars and things like that. I really love the structure for someone who didn't know where to begin. If you don't want to hire a dietician or nutritionist, I didn't even think about that at the time. And I feel like we're in such a bubble where we know so many nutritionists and dieticians and health coaches, but I didn't know that that was even a thing, believe it or not.

2:52Hunter Stoler:And it was so great at providing me a structure with how to eat. It prioritized real whole ingredient foods, whether it's fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, because those are the zero point foods. And then you fill your day up with things like popcorn and condiments and oils, which add up to your allotted points for the day. And I think it's great at helping someone learn how to start eating. But it's not something that I think you need to do after you not only just reach a goal weight loss wise, but once you learn the fundamentals on how to build proper meals. Okay, so you were 50 pounds overweight.

3:26And was this purely just because you didn't know how to eat? I mean, you just ate ultra processed foods all the time, or you didn't grow up in a healthy home or what led to that?

3:35Hunter Stoler:So my whole family, we never even thought it was a problem, believe it or not. I have a photographic memory of when I learned about ingredients. I started learning about ingredients. And I remember standing on my counters in our home, throwing out the Oreos, the Skippy peanut butter, and the vegetable oil because you think it's healthy because it has the word vegetable in it. And I thought all of those things were amazing and normal, which they are normal because everyone uses them. But just because it's normal doesn't mean that it's right or good for you. And I started learning about healthy swaps.

4:06Hunter Stoler:And that's what helped me lower my inflammation, lose a few more pounds, and also just feel more satisfied and full. So it really is crazy. And my whole family, I mean, my mom, dad, and sister have all lost weight, built muscle since then. And I definitely have been very influential in helping that as well. Good for you. That's incredible. Thank you. That's an amazing story. I actually did not realize you went through Weight Watchers. So fun little tidbit about you. All right, Josaira, tell them why you even started. Well, thank you for having me because being here is just a surreal moment. Just like Hunter said, you were actually the very first person I followed when I started to have some interest in the non-toxic world.

4:48Oh, interesting. I did not know that. Well, thank you. That's why you're my favorite. Oh, well, thank you. Honestly, your story really impacted and like just gave me hope because I went through a very traumatic experience. I'll get into it. So I was pregnant in 2020 and I had actually a pretty good pregnancy until my 34 week appointment. I ended up having a little bit of elevated blood pressure. I had goals to have a home birth and everything natural and no epidural and you build this like perfect plan and it didn't come out that way. So 34 weeks, my blood pressure was a little elevated. I had to go to the hospital.

5:28They found that my liver enzymes were elevated. So they wanted to induce me. And the induction word was like, oh my God, this is all things that I did not want to do. But they scared me and said that my daughter might be a stillborn. So I was like, do what you have to do to take my daughter out and make sure that me and her are safe. I was in labor for four days. Oh, wow. I was trying to hold on to that one thing at least that I've, you know, I wanted to like have a natural burp. So I was like, I don't want to epidural. I want to at least have some control over being in the hospital. So for four days straight, no pain pills, no nothing, just going through the contractions until that day four, I was like, I don't think I could do this anymore.

6:13So I did ended up getting the epidural. I had a doula and she said, I think you should get it too because you're not eating, you're losing energy. And if you don't have enough energy to push your baby out, you might have a C-section. Not that there's anything wrong with a C-section, but I wanted to prevent that. So I got the epidural and like, I feel like instantly once they gave me the epidural, my body finally relaxed. And then I was like, I feel like I got to poop. Yeah. And like her head was out and like she came out and she came out perfect. I ended up finding out that I actually had COVID and COVID was what caused the high blood pressure Oh, interesting.

6:47My placenta not functioning, and that's why they had said they had to induce me and take my baby out. Interesting. So they show me my daughter, and they go like this, and they just take her away. So they're not able to hold her, not able to, like, really see her. And for 10 days straight. Oh, because you had COVID. Yeah. Josaira, I did not know this part of your story. You're going to hear a lot more. So you didn't have the baby for the first 10 days? For the first 10 days. I couldn't see her. I couldn't touch her. Oh my gosh. It was really hard, but also I was having the high blood pressure and they were trying to figure out what's going on with you.

7:24So it was almost like I was a NICU nurse as well. So I just knew my daughter was safe. And I was like, give me to where I can be able to take care of her and then like go home. Was in the hospital for a week after having her. And as soon as they were going to discharge me, my blood pressure went up to 200 over 100. Oh, shoot. And they're like, we can't discharge you. And I really wanted to go home. And I was like, just give me a blood pressure pill. Let's monitor it. And they did that. And because my background is nursing, they trusted me. And they're like, OK, like, we'll give you your blood pressure medication, take a nap, eat something, and we'll see what your blood pressure is afterwards.

8:03Fine, I did that. And it went down. And they discharged me without my baby. So I went home by myself. Oh, my gosh. Because you had COVID. Because I had COVID. Josaira. Yeah. Yeah. And actually, thankfully, my husband actually came with me at my 34-week appointment. Because otherwise, I would have had labored all by myself. Oh, yeah. Because he had been there. Yeah. Okay. And they had almost said that they were going to tell him to leave. And thankfully, like, my nurse fought for me and was like, she needs her husband here. Yeah. Because they were going to send him home. I ended up going home at, like, with eight to ten medications.

8:40being a person that I've never really been on pharmaceuticals I went a stretch like I had my background I do have anxiety so I was on medications for anxiety in my senior year of nursing school but only one at a time and then I got discharged with eight to ten medications for my blood pressure for my anxiety for aspen because they thought aspirin was going to help with COVID it was I was almost kind of like a test dummy when it comes to like COVID and preeclampsia because they were seeing it, but they didn't understand it. So they were just like throwing all types of medication at me. And I listened.

9:16I was like, if this is what I'm supposed to do to get better. So I took all the medications. Within two days, I ended up back in the hospital. Oh, my blood pressure went back up. The parameters they gave me for the blood pressure. I had an athletic heart rate. So when I give you a blood pressure medication, they'll give you parameters. If your heart rate is this, don't take it. And my midwives will call me and I'm like, this is my blood pressure, but my heart rate is this. Should I take it? No, no. So for two to three days, I didn't take any blood pressure medication because they said no. And then I shot back up to 200 to 100.

9:48And I called my midwife and she's like, you have to go to the ER. So I went to the ER and then I was admitted again. The same hospital as my daughter's. I still couldn't see her, but I was at least able to breast, not breastfeed, but pump and give her breast milk at the time. I spent another week in the hospital trying to figure out my blood pressure. Ended up with E. coli infection from the Foley. They thought that was increasing my blood pressure. But then they said my anxiety was the culprit of the high blood pressure. So they put me on a drug called gabapentin, which is not typically used for anxiety, but is normally used for seizures.

10:25But it's off-label used for anxiety. I knew this. I knew the risk. and I was skeptical about it but I was desperate I was desperate if this is going to help my blood pressure if this is going to help me and this is going to help me get home and get home with my baby I'll try it I was able to get off medication before on my own don't do that ever so I was like I'll take it and see how I feel within two days I was severely depressed but they kept saying like oh, that's baby blues. You'll be fine. It's baby blues. So I was like, okay, I keep taking the medication because then I thought it was baby blues.

11:02I didn't think it was the medication. My daughter was able to come home on Christmas. Oh, wow. So we picked her up on Christmas. She only spent 10 days in the NICU. For that entire month, my midwife called me every single day about my blood pressure and I was able to titrate all my medication until we got to the gabapentin. and the gabapentin, I stopped it and immediately I felt nauseous. I was dizzy and I was like, okay, I don't think I should have stopped it. I probably should have titrated it. Yeah. Right. Like weaned off of it. I should have weaned off of it. So I called my doctor and I was like, I stopped this medication and it probably wasn't a good idea.

11:38Um, I feel dizzy. Um, I felt nauseous. What should I do? And I was on the lowest dose, but the lowest dose is a hundred milligrams, which is very high dose for little me. So she said, take it every other day. So I did what the doctor said every other day. Within two days, I was getting tingling in my entire body. Oh, shoot. And I didn't, I was crying to my husband. I'm like, we have this newborn. I'm trying to take care of her. And I'm like, I don't know what's going on with my body. My entire body is just like tingling. Went to the ER again. They said I was having a panic attack. I was like, this is not a panic attack.

12:14Like, it's not. I was like, I just got off this medication. I'm taking it every other day. I think I'm withdrawing from it. And they're like, no, it's not. They kept saying no. So they sent me home because they thought it was just a panic attack. And they prescribed me Xanax. I know all things about Xanax, the side effects, all of it. But again, I was desperate. They said, hey, maybe this will help the tingling from the gabapentin. And it did for a little bit, for a couple days. And then all of a sudden, the tingling started again. And then I started getting burning, severe burning in my head.

12:45I will tell people that it felt like, I don't know what acid feels like, but it felt like someone was pouring acid on my. Interesting. My blood pressure shot back up. My heart rate was up. I had twitching. I would like twitch like this and my feet would twitch. I was doing things that I'd never thought a body could experience. And it just got so bad. My whole body started burning and tingling. And I went to go see chiropractors and naturopathic doctors and Western doctors. And I was calling any doctor that I could talk to. I went online and was emailing doctors like someone helped me until it got so, so bad.

13:23My daughter was three months that every medication that I was prescribed, I decided that the one night I asked my husband, I said, let's watch a movie together. Because I had planned to take my life because I felt that life would have been better without me. He was taking me to so many different appointments with our baby that was only like three months old. And we've been doing that since she was born. And I felt like I was the biggest burden. And I just thought that they would be better without me. So every drug that those doctors prescribed me, I just took all of it one night. But I had told him, I said, let's watch a movie.

14:00And he thought it was very weird. I was like, let's watch a movie and eat something. And when he fell asleep, I went into another room and just took every single medication. And he said, Zoe, her name is Zoe, my daughter, that she was on a pretty good schedule. I had her on a pretty good schedule and it was crazy because I kind of like sleep trained her, which is not being in the crunchy world. But I did that because I wanted to like prepare him to be able to like take care of her in his sleep. And he said she woke up much earlier than she normally does. he turned around and looked at me and he said I look lifeless and he immediately called 911 and took me to the ER they said the only thing they gave me was fluids and insulin because my sugar was really low and my blood pressure was really low so I only spent a couple hours in the ICU I guess med surge and I had a one-to-one you know what a one-to-one is someone in your in your room watching you to make sure that you don't take your life again yeah watch every move.

15:02I couldn't even wear panties. Apparently you could straddle yourself with panties. Interesting. Yeah. So sitting in that bed, I was like, I already tried to take my life. And to be transparent, I was like, when I get home, I don't want to like, I don't want to live. I don't want to be here anymore. Like, I know I have a daughter. I just feel like she would be better without me. Just, I feel like when I woke up after all that, my symptoms got worse. So I started twitching more. The tingling was more. The burning was more. So I was like, I made it worse. So I was in the hospital for seven days after that.

15:43They didn't 302 me. I volunteered because I knew of my background in nursing. I'm like, if I don't agree to go to a psych ward, they'll 302 me. So I said, okay, take me to a psych ward. So I spent 24 hours in the psych ward and finally a doctor listened to me and he said, you were absolutely harmed by gabapentin and Xanax. And he was like, the fact that you just had a baby and the hormones and everything that happens on top of pumping you with all these drugs, you were absolutely harmed. He said, as long as you have no plans on trying to commit suicide again, I'm going to watch you for 24 hours and I'll let you go home.

16:23And to be honest, I lied. And I said, I don't want to try anymore. I'm good. But I had all thoughts of all different ways that I can take my life again. But when I got home and held my daughter, it was a different feeling of like, I need to find a way to heal. And for six months, I sat with myself and just dealt with the symptoms and did nothing because I tried everything before. until one day I googled metaphysical healing randomly. And I found this guy from Hawaii and he did like virtual metaphysical healing. And I reached out to him and he was like, I can help you. And it was just a call. And he was like, I want to just read your body.

17:07And I was like, okay. And he told me everything that was wrong with me. And I never met this guy. And this was just a phone call. So I took money from my savings account and I gave him$5 ,000 because he said he can help me. and within maybe like a month of working with him I was able to at least go outside for a walk and I felt like the tingling lessened a little bit and I worked with him for about a year and then I was able to tolerate supplements again because that was another thing I was trying supplements I would take an omega and it'll make my burning and tingling worse so I was terrified to even take supplements so that's why I was more open to the metaphysical healing but he opened the door for me to be able to try other things.

17:49And then after that, I hired a nutritionist and a chiropractor and so many different doctors. And little by little, I've gotten better. But I still struggle with a lot of the same symptoms, just not as severe. But that's what opened the door to meeting you and seeing your profile. Because I was kind of dabbling into the non-toxic world in 2019. I had interviewed someone that was in the space. I thought she was a little crazy at first and I was like toxins and everything what but she reminded me like after eight months of suffering with those symptoms I went back on social media and I feel like you were the first person that like popped up and I started following you and I started cleaning up all of our products because I was eating fairly healthy but not really reading the ingredients you inspired me to read the ingredients of what I was using and I feel like the transition of products and then also meeting these different chiropractors and cranial sacral and doing all those things, I've progressed to where I am now to be able to travel again and build a business.

18:55We've met numerous times. We've done things in DC. We've, you know, been at Expo West together and I knew you had medical harm, but I never knew the full extent of the story. So I am just sitting here like, oh my gosh, to so many different parts of it. But what I love is that you reached the depths of hell. You really did. Like, I can relate. I've been there. And you have turned it around to help others. And that is what I love about your story. So thank you, both of you, for being vulnerable and sharing those stories. Okay, Josiah, we're going to have to have you come on an episode. And we are going to talk all about depression.

19:34We're going to talk about helping people, like, give them tips of what to do, because you and I have a lot in common. And so everybody tune back for this episode that we're going to do on depression, wanting to just end your life, lack of hope. We could talk for hours. Absolutely, I would love to. Okay, so we're going to stay tuned for part two, everybody. But we're gonna go back to just being health and wellness influencers. And I know they just wanna know about things that you guys are doing and things that drive you crazy, things that you're hopeful for. So the first question is, being a health and wellness influencer, what is one thing that just drives you crazy in the health and wellness space?

20:16Hunter Stoler:I think the one thing that drives me the craziest, especially seeing, you know, it's very different when you're reading your DMs and your messages and comments like both of us do. We talk about it all the time. And one of the things that drives me crazy is when one of us does something that isn't quote unquote perfect and people go crazy about it. even yesterday we were at the Redmond cave and you know we were at center the night before you and a few people on your team and people were like you need to lick the wall you need to taste it I got at least 30 messages being like this is so unsanitary this is so not like you and I'm like it's the experience and like I'm not isn't that crazy yes and but that's not even that's just one small example but also just the idea of perfectionism and that people think that you you are in control of everything.

21:03Hunter Stoler:And one of my biggest quotes that I am obsessed with is control the controllables. And I control what I can control. I try to eat out healthily whenever I can, but sometimes it's truly just not in your control. And I really just want to go back to controlling as much as you can without letting the stress overtake your nutrition, because that will lead to more, not only just inflammation, but just negative thoughts down the road as well. Yeah, I love that. It is crazy what people will DM. And one, you're licking the wall of a salt cave that that salt, the section you were in, because I know because I've been in that cave, that section of salt is used like on roads for like when the snow gets on the roads and they need to throw salt on the highway.

21:44Like it doesn't matter that you look to that part.

21:46Hunter Stoler:Oh, no, I don't even know if they meant it in terms of like this could be salt that they're eventually eating. I think they meant it like you're licking the side of a cave like you don't know what's there. It's so unsanitary. Oh, I see. But I understand both. But I mean, people are just nuts. It's experience. When are you ever in a salt mine? No, I'm so happy we went. So, you know, I know. Okay, the one thing that drives you crazy, Josaira? Me or the people who said, my grandmom did it and she's fine. I get that so much because, you know, we're always talking about like chlorine pools and this and that.

22:21And I'm like, that drives me crazy because I'm like, what your grandmom ate is not what we're eating. What we're exposed to is definitely not what my grandmom was exposed to. That's the most annoying thing that I get. Yeah, because so many of the artificial like sweeteners and flavorings came in the 80s. The bunch of GMOs came in the 90s and the early 2000s. And so I'm like, your grandma in the 60s was not eating the GMOs we're eating in the 2000s.

22:51Hunter Stoler:McDonald's fries then versus now is a very big difference. In fact, someone told me way back then they were fried in... Beef tallow. Oh yeah, beef tallow. That's right. I'm curious, what's one small thing you've changed at home that's made a bigger difference than you've expected? That's a great question. One small thing that I've changed is something that anyone could do. And I know it could be harder when you have a family, you have kids, or anyone who you live with, especially a roommate. But again, going back to controlling the controllables and making sure, like I used to be obsessed with peanut butter when I was 50 pounds heavier, I could eat an entire container of Skippy and then I'd feel so gross right afterwards.

23:28Hunter Stoler:But removing as much as possible those trigger foods from your living environment is so important. That doesn't mean that you have to restrict that peanut butter or whatever it is forever. It just means, you know, weakening your relationship with that food or product, whatever it is, helped me so much when I was in college And also when I lived alone and was with roommates after college. And it's so helpful because I still went out. And if there was, if I was at a friend's house and they had peanut butter, like I would be able to eat it, but I wouldn't feel the need to, you know, eat half of the jar.

24:01Hunter Stoler:And obviously it's a very caloric food. And then now I reintroduced peanut butter into my life. I have it in my fridge, my pantry, everywhere. And I don't even think twice about it. So I think being aware of your trigger foods, things that, you know, you could definitely overeat or overindulge in even ice cream things like that and just stop buying them because you're just hurting yourself when you do that for yourself yeah i love that advice the other day i was at a conference speaking and this one mom came up to me afterwards and she was like my kids just eat so much junk food and i was like yeah it's really hard to control when they're out like we've got to teach them blah blah blah and she goes no in my house and i said you're the gatekeeper exactly You're the one buying the food that comes in the house.

24:43So just don't buy it.

24:44Hunter Stoler:Exactly. Especially if the mom. Well, they just love it so much. And I was like, you're the gatekeeper. Yes. They're not buying it. You are. Completely agree. But then it works for an adult as well. Know what your trigger foods are. But also, if you're the mom buying food for your house and you're like, I just keep buying the goldfish and my kids keep eating a pack a day, you're the one buying the goldfish. Right. You know? The kids aren't going to understand, especially little kids, about certain ingredients. if it's there they're gonna eat it because mom bought it yeah okay but that explains why you love our peanut butter protein love is an understatement i'm obsessed and the ninja creamies have you tried the vanilla peanut butter yes but i'm i think i think peanut butter needs chocolate okay so i'm just obsessed with mixing them that makes sense now all right jesira the one thing for me is bread like therapy i feel like since i started that it helps with my inflammation has been helping with it if I have any like localized pain but also because I have Hashimoto's it has lowered my TPO.

25:45Interesting. Now I do red light all day and if you have not gotten the higher dose red light shower filter I highly recommend. Oh a shower filter. Yes. Okay explain what this is. So it's like a red light on in your shower. Yes there's a shower filter and it's just the red light ring over top of it and you could take a red light shower every single day And when I go on vacation, I miss it. Like, I miss my shower. I need that because a lot of times I run out of time for red light. So just do it while you're showering. Yeah. You're obsessed. Us moms, we're so busy. We're business owners. How can you do all the things?

26:21So I have a stack. Take a shower. Put your red light. I listen to my, like, audio books or podcasts while I shower. And I try to do as much as possible during my shower. Oh, that's amazing. Okay, I'm going to have to try that. That's a good tip. Let's take a quick break to hear from our show sponsor. Q4 Quinn is rethinking the basics you wear every single day. 27:44Now back to the show. okay so being health and wellness influencers there is a lot of noise out there and it's really hard for people to believe like well do i believe this person or that person they're saying different things they're contradicting each other so the noise is so loud out there so what do you say to your listeners about that or your followers also you have to remember social

28:08Hunter Stoler:media for the most part is a highlight reel of course there's outliers like both of you who have shared your stories. And, you know, it's not always a highlight. However, for most people, it could definitely be a highlight reel. You're not showing when you mess up while speaking, you're not showing when you overeat or just feel sick or whatever it is. And I think it's important that you can't duplicate someone's exact experience or routine and expect the same outcomes. Because again, unless you're with that person 24 hours a day, you don't know what is actually happening, how they're feeling, what they're eating, what they're taking, anything like that.

28:41Hunter Stoler:So that's really important to me. And seeing it as both someone who goes on social media and follows people and someone who's a creator who people follow. I think it's so important as a creator to share. I think people also relate to the realistic routines that we share and they love the product recommendations and advice that we share and what's helped all of us along our health or weight loss journeys. And just being very approachable and personable, I think that that's what's really important. But just to remember, you cannot duplicate what someone else is doing and expect the exact same results because different supplements, different foods, different home products, they all work differently for different people.

29:23Yeah. So I have a question though for you, because when I tell my story of depression, people are like, you're talking about cleaning supplies. Like why? That has nothing to do with depression. And I can always back it up being like, no, cleaning supplies affect your hormones, whatever. But do people be like, you lost weight? What does this have to do with losing weight? Why do you care about the better underwear you're wearing or the better cleaning supply that you're showing?

29:47Hunter Stoler:I think I have a few different layers to answer this. I think, first of all, cleaning up different areas of your life that aren't just nutrition, sometimes it's easier and simpler than cleaning up your diet because people are very, and people are also very emotionally attached to their Tide and Windex and the smells of those. And all of us know, and most of your listeners probably know that when you walk down a Target cleaning aisle and you walk by the tide and the very artificial fragrances, you get a headache. And I feel like my brain's going to explode. So when you remove the toxins in other areas of your life, and again, it doesn't mean you need to be 100 % perfect, you feel so much better.

30:23Hunter Stoler:And I'm so much more inspired to make better decisions when it comes to my nutrition, my fitness, and just my overall life. And I always say, like focus on getting 1 % better every day. If you're able to swap out your boxers for organic cotton boxers, which I think is one of the easiest swaps you could make, why not do that? Then maybe your shorts or your jeans or shirts could come next. Or if you're able to swap your laundry detergent for another one that's scented, that saves you money. Why would you not want to make that change? And those are the things that are much simpler for me to make.

30:54Hunter Stoler:And again, going back to weight loss, I think it is so much harder to maintain your weight loss than it is to lose the weight because once you see those numbers trickling down, like we have some friends who are on weight loss journeys and things like that, it's very motivating and it's like a game to try to get to reach your goal weight. And maintaining is, it is very hard. And especially for someone like us who, and you, who try so many new products, not even your own, but just other products that you get, like I want to eat it all. So it's very hard to do that all in moderation. but again it's very important that we sort of act as models and we're very realistic about it and share the wins the ups and downs but you know especially as someone whose content mainly focuses on health and wellness and weight loss it's really important that people understand that maintaining weight is sometimes much harder than it is to just lose the weight and it's not like you reach the finish line like a marathon and you're done it's a forever ongoing battle that you always have to work on.

31:55The original question was about the loud noise and all of that. What do you tell your followers? For me, it's to listen to your gut and listen to your intuition because I feel like I have a pretty good intuition. And I always, for some reason, I'll tell someone what I think. And I'm like, don't take this as fact, but this is what I feel in my intuition. And I end up being right. So I always tell people just, you know, listen to your gut. And I feel like when you listen to your gut, you kind of feel like who you can trust. And I feel like that's how I've been able to feel like who I can trust. I love that advice.

32:29That is important. Okay. I'm curious with all the loud noise out there. What is one thing that's out there that drives you crazy, like a topic or a lesson or something that you wish you could teach people? Like it's not true.

32:43Hunter Stoler:You go first. I need to think. Lead. Lead in everything. Oh, you're eating. That's filled with lead. Oh, my God. There's so much misinformation on lead and the lead fear base accounts drive me crazy. And I'm sure they drive you crazy. Yes, because the spinach you're eating, the carrots you're eating, the strawberries you're eating, all of it has lead. But also the part that everybody misses is they have cofactors as well to help get the lead out of your body. Lead paint does not. So that's why lead paint is an issue. lead in the food all those cofactors the glutathione the b vitamins that i mean there's a whole list of them it will help pull the lead out of your body we also learned a lot about this at redmond yesterday because you know redmond was under some criticism by a few people about having lead and we're like this is not contaminated with lead after it's created by mankind you know right and it's just a naturally occurring thing and when foods or you know whatever you want to call salt like a condiment or just salt gets, you know, it's grown in the ground and not genetically engineered in a lab.

33:50Hunter Stoler:Like everything is susceptible to a contaminant like lead, you know? Yeah. Well, and that salt is from the earth. Like you guys saw, like you go 500, 800 feet under the ground and it's got other trace minerals in it. It's not bleached. It's not deodorized. It's not, you know what I mean? It's just true salt from the earth. Yeah. So I know. Okay. What about you? What was the question again? Oh yeah. Like one thing out there in the health world that you wish people didn't believe, or you knew. Again, I'm really just going to go back to perfectionism. And I think people think that they really do need to be perfect every single day to see results.

34:27Hunter Stoler:And I was not perfect along my weight loss journey and focusing on the small incremental changes that truly add up because they add up so drastically. And when it's not a remove, it's not an all or nothing diet. It's not, you know, restricting your favorite foods. We eat chocolate, we eat ice cream, we eat everything that we like. And it's all about finding the healthier swaps. And I also will say, I want to talk about price for a second, because you could definitely relate to this as having a very high quality supplement line. And people think that, you know, it's impossible to be healthier and also be budget friendly and aware your products are now on like thrive market i see your they're everywhere and i'm sure they'll be in so many more places soon and what i always say is stock up on your products whether they're just ingredients or any brand out there when there are these really big sales because your protein powders or your sparkling electrolytes they're not expiring in one month unless you're buying them on a clearance like that so for 99.9 percent of products out there utilize resources like Thrive Market that price match.

35:30Hunter Stoler:Utilize the sales, the Amazon Prime Days, the site-wide birthday sales that are 20, 25 % off. And I want everyone to really think about where they're putting and allocating their money. Because if you have$100, but you have a family of four and you're going to Chipotle or Chick-fil-A, it could be 15, even McDonald's,$15 a meal or more. And people say it about all the protein powders, you know, but if yours is between two and three dollars a serving, you probably know the exact math without a discount code or anything, you go and get a smoothie every day, which I get smoothies out sometimes. It could be 15 to 20 dollars.

36:08Hunter Stoler:And then people will have the nerve to complain about a protein powder that you can make at home with just milk and ice or water and ice. So it's really important to think about things in that perspective and to realize that just because some people are saying something is too expensive, that's their excuse for not making the changes for better health. I hate that excuse because one, I'm like, there are a ton of things you can do for free. You can go walk out in the sunlight. You can prioritize your sleep. You can change your mindset. I mean, there's so many things you can do for free. And then I'm like, people, real food's expensive.

36:40It just is. It's more expensive, but be smart, buy it on sale. But then I say it's expensive, but then I just made a reel about Starbucks pumpkin spice latte. It was over$8 for the thing by the time I paid tax and tip and everything. And I'm like, but you guys are complaining about my protein powder, which is like$2 and something a serving. That's not even close. So, yeah, I get that mentality.

37:04Hunter Stoler:I can't with Starbucks. And it kills me when I go, when I'm, you know, I'm building in New York City. Obviously, there's a Starbucks in every corner. And I see people walking out of Starbucks and a lot of nurses, sadly. You definitely know this. And they have the caramel frappuccinos. And this isn't judging. It's just my observation. And it's just so sad that that's what's being brought into the hospitals to help people with their illnesses and emergencies. And I'm talking about the whipped cream and all the caramel drizzle. And I'm like, oh, God. Yeah. Oh, yeah. My dad, he I was telling him the foot mapping.

37:38Hunter Stoler:What is that? Foot mapping? Foot zoner. Foot zoner. Heidi, who's incredible about this because she was asking me about discs in my back. and I was like my dad actually had to have disc surgery a few years ago and I remember like being in the room after his surgery and seeing what they were bringing him and I was like and this was like when I was just starting to learn about ingredients and I was like oh no let me get you food I'm like what is coming on in this world it's terrible I know we just had a doctor that aired this week actually talk about this like look we weren't given nutrition classes in medical school.

38:12We don't know this. Doctors are busy. If they don't go learn it on their own, they don't learn it. So I know it's a sad situation we live in that doctors and nurses don't know it unless they learn it on their own. Yeah. Yeah. I only had one nutrition course. Oh yeah. You being a nurse yourself, you know, that's so interesting. All right. So instead of stuff driving you crazy, let's talk about the good stuff. What's one thing that you're excited about in the health and wellness space right now? I'm really excited that you can go to Target and learn healthy products now. You can find just ingredients and you can and they transform their baby section and there's Apple baby and there's so many things like when we started you couldn't go anywhere you had to order online.

38:56The fact that we are changing the world because we our bases are so powerful that we were able to get so many healthy stuff in Target and Walmart and Whole Foods and Sprouts. That gets me so excited that I could pick up your protein anywhere now. It's crazy at Target, isn't it? I love it. Like all the time, it's my friends' brands because it's people that I've met through the D2C selling online world. And then I'm like, ah, they're here. I love it. Yeah, I love what Target's doing with that.

39:27Hunter Stoler:And those buyers and the category leaders at Target, they want to see more better free products in every category, which is so, I guess, comforting and reassuring because it shows that it's going in the right direction. Right. I definitely echo that about Target. And I just think, you know, going to the Expos, the Expo West and all of those trade shows, seeing new brands that I've never heard of, seeing people care more about ingredients. And once they make the leap to swapping out their oils, swapping out their cookware, because cookware, you know, it truly matters. And, you know, it's like a one time investment.

40:03Hunter Stoler:And then you have amazing, non toxic cookware for years. And again, shop the sales, Amazon Prime Day, like it's insane. I think seeing all of these changes slowly but surely add up and it just helps people. It helps us understand that we're truly making a difference. And also nothing beats like those incredible testimonials that we get from people we've never heard of in our lives in our DMs just saying, and I'm sure you get it every single hour, every minute, you know, like your products or your advice or your graphics changed my life and you make it so easy. And for someone who doesn't have a lot of time, like now I know what to buy and avoid at Target or Whole Foods or any or online on Amazon.

40:44Hunter Stoler:And I think that technology is really on our side with this because there's just so many places to shop. And it's so great being able to compare prices and, you know, seeing so many more companies create better for you items as well. I know I love seeing how many more companies there are out there because like you said, well, my health journey started like 15 years ago. And imagine that back then there was none of this good stuff around. You just made stuff from scratch. Even gluten-free, like you're gluten-free. And I remember like when I first started six years ago when I was finding products, there was nothing gluten-free.

41:19Hunter Stoler:And now you walk down any aisle at a Better Free Store aisle and almost everything's gluten-free. Yeah. It's incredible. And it tastes good. I have to say that airports need to do better. Oh, airports and restaurants still need to. Not aubergine. That is true. Aubergin was amazing. Everything is gluten-free there, right? Yep. And seed oil-free and made with real food. And shout out to Aubergin. Yeah. Delicious. Everything we've had. Yeah. Now they just need to bring one to New York for you guys. No, seriously. But you guys do have a lot of good choices in New York. Yes. When we were there, I was like, oh my gosh, I could eat out so many different places.

41:55Hunter Stoler:We need some. Jesus. I'm actually from Philly. Yeah. Oh, that's right. I keep saying New York and it's because when I'm in New York, I see you. Yeah. Oh my gosh. I knew you were from Philly. We had our event in New York. So yeah. But. Pop skipping away, I always say. Yeah, because every time I'm in New York, you were there. But New York's booming with all of these Better For You cafes, restaurants, so many seed oil free finds, which is incredible. And we need a just ingredients frozen yogurt. We discussed that earlier. We did discuss that. That is like a dream passion. We're going to work on it, though.

42:26Hunter Stoler:We need it. It's going to be amazing. But I love that there's better choice products now because people are demanding it and people are waking up and learning this stuff and therefore the companies are wanting to provide for them. So I do love that change in the health and wellness space as well. Okay, so I have one last question for you. If you only had one last post to make on your Instagram, what would it say? It's your last post. You're done teaching. What's your very last words of wisdom? I love that question because this is something that I tell people every single day and it goes into like fearing everything take it one day at a time this one day at a time so that's your biggest piece of advice for them yeah okay hunter mine would be since i focus a lot both of us do but my content is really on you know in-store healthy swaps you know swap these chips for this this oil for this or new finds at the grocery store not just to identify the products but understand why i love those products you know why i like the ingredients there's minimal ingredients they're all real food ingredients, whether it's organic or not, glyphosate free, all of that.

43:30Hunter Stoler:And to actually understand why we, all of us recommend certain products instead of just being like, oh, I need to look for this, like so that they could also, people could also educate themselves on what to look for because, you know, not all of us, it's physically impossible to review every single product at the grocery store and for people to become educated so that they are empowered as well. I love that. So you're going to tell them, be educated yourself because knowing allows you to make the better choice or allows you to make a choice without knowing you don't have a choice to make. Yes.

44:03Hunter Stoler:Knowledge is power. Yes. I love that. Well, thank you so much, you guys, for being here. I always end my podcast with asking five rapid fire questions. Let's do it. And so you got to just answer them quick. Okay. All right. The first one is what emerging health topic excites you most? I'll say learning about peptides. I think that there's so much to learn and, you know, the quality matters. And I'm so excited to learn more because I know in the next year I'm going to become so much more educated on it. Yeah, that's something I've been trying to learn about, too. And we've had a few doctors on here talking about it.

44:36But I do need to learn more about peptides. I feel like mine goes into more of a personal level because I have Hashimoto's. I want to like really dial in to learn more about the thyroid. Oh, I love that. OK, number two, what's a piece of advice you give to your younger self?

44:50Hunter Stoler:again I think taking it like one day at a time one remember making one swap at a time and not doing a complete overhaul of your home for me is just being encouraging and saying like you're gonna do good like everything is gonna work out I love that yep like when times get hard just remember things are gonna work out and to go into things with a positive attitude we were talking about that earlier like if you go into something negative and thinking that you're gonna fail like you're going to fail but going into things positive or at least neutral like it definitely helps your odds yeah because your mind gets to choose so if you're already telling yourself it's going to be terrible it is going to be even with posting social media content online so many people oh why are you doing that it's so embarrassing when you first start and then once you get 10 ,000 100 ,000 followers people are like can you teach me so just remember like that is true that is true I love that.

45:45That makes me laugh because like my first couple posts, I had some friends that are like, what are you doing? And even some siblings are like, what are you doing? And I'm like, okay. Number three, what's the one health practice you'll never compromise on no matter how busy life gets?

46:01Hunter Stoler:I would say, I feel like I know what you're going to say. You go first. I was going to say my red light. I knew it. I knew it. Did you bring your red light on the trip? I have my loom box, yes, and my Bond torch face mask. Oh my gosh, I love it. I would say my biggest thing is prioritizing protein. I am not someone who could fast all day. I can't go until dinner without eating. And I don't let food noise get in the way of everything, but I need to start my day with protein and fiber. And it's really important to me. And even if I'm not hungry, I'd always want to get ahead of my hunger. I love that.

46:36I am the same way. If I don't have a good hearty protein breakfast, it's like I'm ruining the whole rest of the day. But if I can start with that protein, I'm good. Good. Yeah, I love that. Okay, number four, what's your favorite just ingredients product and why?

46:51Hunter Stoler:I am going to say it's electrolytes for me. I thought you were going to say peanut butter. Something with peanut butter. So, I mean, I love the peanut butter, but I will say. Okay, go back to electrolytes. But I do want to say this because it's very important, and I've been seeing it become a lot more popular on social media. I'm not naming names, but so many electrolyte companies are sodium bombs, and they have a thousand milligrams of sodium, 800 milligrams of sodium. And I think there's a time and place for that. But for the normal person and I work, we both work out. I sweat a lot. I do cycle classes, hit classes.

47:22Hunter Stoler:I'm sweating, but people do not need 99 % of people who work a traditional job in an office. They're very sedentary. You do not need two, a thousand milligram sodium packets a day. And what I love about yours is it's obviously flavored with all real food, perfect ingredients. and the best part is so many flavors to choose from. The variety is incredible. There's 100 milligrams, unless you get the performance for athletes, of course. And I go through the lemonade. We love the peach. I go through strawberry, like all of the flavors. Right now I have blue Hawaiian and there are 100 milligrams and I don't need to feel guilty thinking that I'm having a sodium bomb if I'm having two or three a day and they help you get more water in.

48:00I love that. Well, thank you for saying that.

48:02Hunter Stoler:It's important because no one considers the sodium. people look at the protein in certain products and the calories and sugar. And people don't realize that sodium is very important because, and I'm not saying it needs to be the most looked at thing on the label, of course not. But when it comes to electrolytes, people think they're just like for fun and they could be for fun, but you don't need that much. And I know, I personally know people who are having three a day of the 800 ,000 milligrams sodium per serving, and they're wondering why they feel puffy and they just don't need that. You also get sodium in food.

48:37Yeah. Well, and also sodium and potassium are a pump that work together in your body. And so to me, the potassium is more important. And so we have a three to one ratio because the potassium helps pull the water into the cell to actually truly hydrate the cell. And so everybody knows sodium because of salt, but people don't really know about potassium, but potassium is really key in hydrating the cells. So there you go. A little science lesson. All right, Josaira, your favorite. That's a hard question because I literally use multiple things. Well, thank you. Thank you. So I'm going to give you two because I think two is relatable.

49:14So I told you about the energy drink. I never liked it. Monsters never liked this. Celsius none of that because I hated the taste. And when you came out with your energy drink, I'm always fatigued because of Hashimoto's. And I gave it a try. and I just like I feel like within 30 minutes I felt like my mind wasn't cloudy and I didn't have like the jitters because I don't do very well with caffeine and that's why I'm like not a coffee person or anything and it just gives you this like clean energy and it tastes amazing and I was just shocked because I'm not an energy drinker now the second one is a deodorant because I know this is a struggle for a lot of people when you switch to deodorant even hunter hunter asked me what deodorant do you use?

49:55My husband and my sister, my sister was like, I have not found any natural deodorant. I stink. I'm terrible. And I'm like, have you tried just ingredients? Well, good. Well, thank you.

50:05Hunter Stoler:Could you talk about for like 10 seconds why they're magnesium based? Yeah. So you need something to actually neutralize the bacteria that is causing the odor. And so you can use magnesium charcoal. Some use like baking soda, but baking soda is like irritating to a lot of people and so you do need something that will help neutralize the the odor awesome and so magnesium is what helps neutralize that but what's interesting if the deodorant doesn't work for you you actually may be so low in magnesium that your body is just like soaking in that magnesium rather than using it to help neutralize the bacteria so i don't know a little tip yeah some and a lot of people do need more magnesium in their life.

50:49So, okay. Very last question. What is the best ingredient you've found to life?

50:54Hunter Stoler:I would say adaptability. Ooh, I like that. I don't know if anyone has said that one before. So happy I'm the first. Yeah. I would say adapting to situations based off of those circumstances is so important. And just knowing your surroundings and understanding like who you're around, what to say when you're around certain groups of people. And, you know, that I think adaptability is so important. I love that even in the health and wellness space. Of course. Adapt to the new things that you're learning and don't be stuck on something that we thought 20 years ago. And I love that. And it also goes along with like perfectionism because if you're at a restaurant and they're like, we don't know what oil we use, like just adapt, don't make a scene and just get right back on track right after.

51:37Right. I love that. All right. The best ingredient. I feel like mine is kind of similar as like being flexible because you can't like this life is so many toxins everywhere. You can't be perfect. So being flexible and like the choices that you make and not trying to be like concrete on like, you know, I'm on vacation. I cannot have seed oils. And I'm like, that's almost impossible in a lot of places. So just being flexible in what you do. I do love that because I love that you were in Hawaii recently and you showed like I am at this Disney resort. There isn't great choices, but I'm making the best I can.

52:13but if I have seed oils and it is what it is but at home I'm going to choose otherwise oh I love that I love just talking with you guys chit-chatting but tell my listeners your handles again one more time you guys go follow them because they are a wealth of knowledge as you can tell you will learn so much from them and so tell them again where they can find you you can find me on every platform

I loved having two of my internet friends here in Utah to record this episode! Hunter and Jasyra's stories reminded me so much of how I got started on Instagram. None of us set out to become "health influencers." We each just wanted to share what had helped us on our own health journeys. They both started out struggling with their own health, and they used those struggles as the push to learn, make changes, and share what they found with all of us. This episode is a good reminder that everyone starts in a different place., what matters is that you start. I loved this conversation and learned so much more about both of them than I knew before. I know you'll walk away feeling encouraged instead of overwhelmed.

Here are a few of my biggest takeaways from our conversation:

Your health struggles can become your motivation. Hunter and Jasyra each share the personal health stories that started their journeys, and how those hard seasons turned into the reason they now help others live healthier.

Everyone starts in a different spot, and that's okay. There's no perfect starting line. Wherever you are right now is a good place to begin, and comparing your journey to someone else's only gets in the way.

Small swaps at home add up. We talk about the simple changes they've each made at home that ended up making a bigger difference than they expected. It's proof that you don't have to overhaul everything at once.

How to decide who to listen to when the health world gets loud. With so much conflicting information online, Hunter and Jasyra share how they sort through the noise and decide which voices they trust.

What to stop stressing about. They share the one thing they wish their followers would stop worrying about, plus what they're most excited about in the health world right now.

Tune in now and share this one with a friend who needs to hear it.
