In short
Dr. Cheryl Lee Eberting explains Azova, a “fully connected digital health ecosystem,” and the new “Nutrition First Healthcare” programs that deliver whole-person, root-cause nutrition and functional medicine via home labs, telehealth, and a moderated expert community.
Guests
Dr. Cheryl Lee Eberting, a dermatologist turned digital health founder; previously did a clinical research fellowship at NIH studying Job syndrome and eczema, developing skin-barrier biology-based products; now leads Azova and nutrition-first protocols.
Key claims
Healthcare should be nutrition-first (not drug-first). Many conditions can be addressed by identifying “root cause drivers” across gut, inflammation, immune function, thyroid, hormones, and mental health. Stress and nervous-system regulation (vagus nerve) influence immune and autoimmune activity. Azova’s AI assistant (Zovie) helps choose the best program; an algorithm guides lab recommendations.
Notable examples
A baby in Algeria seeking eczema help online; a 20-year-old with severe depression found to have low serotonin precursors (B6 depleted), gut overgrowth (Clostridia), inflammatory fatty-acid shifts, and a COMT mutation—improved via diet and supplements. Functional hypothyroidism described as cortisol/stress-related (no thyroid antibodies).

If you're ready to learn, feel empowered, and take charge of your health, you're in the right place. Welcome back to the show, everyone. Today, I'm really excited for you to hear about something that we're launching and to hear about maybe a whole new way that you can do your health care at your home. So I'm super excited to introduce this to you. And the amazing doctor that has created all of this is here with us. And it's Dr. Cheryl Lee Ebertine. So welcome to the show. Thank you.
0:38It's nice to be here with you today. So before we get into this whole new thing that you have created and that we're going to launch, let's just start from the beginning because you've been a dermatologist for years. And so what took you from being a dermatologist to wanting to make a computer software platform? Okay. Well, it's been a long journey, first of all. When I was in my training, my last year of training I did what's called a clinical research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. It's the largest research hospital in the world. And when I was there, I was focused on a population of patients who have a disease called Job syndrome, named after Job in the Bible.
1:15And they have all kinds of horrible problems, but their worst problem is the worst eczema in the world. and I was already obsessed with chemical toxicities and chemical allergies as my area of specialty and it is a big driver in people who have eczema and people who have any problem right frankly is really understanding what you're exposing yourself to in your environment so from that perspective I'm trying to treat these patients who had really bad eczema and I thought I could really benefit from having some products that fix your skin barrier from a from a scientific standpoint. So I spent about five years developing some skin barrier biology-based products to help people heal their skin barriers.
1:55I launched them. It was 2014 when I launched them. I launched them with a mommy blogger. And within three days, we had people from all over the world emailing photos of themselves and their kids to my sales guy, asking him to ask me to diagnose and treat them over the internet. Oh, interesting. And that's when I was like, oh my gosh, healthcare over the internet, right? I mean, you know e-commerce. This is e-commerce plus healthcare married together. Then it was actually a picture of a baby from Algeria. Okay. So this baby doesn't have access to care, right? Baby's mom sends in this picture, hey, could maybe someone in America could help me.
2:29Oh my goodness. Right. And I thought, oh my gosh, what if I could teach this baby's doctor my protocols and this baby's doctor could help her patients over the internet? But then my brain just exploded. Wait, not just this baby's doctor in Algeria. What about every doctor. What if we could connect the entire healthcare ecosystem around you, the patient, so that you, the patient, could see all your doctors in one app, could have all your data in one app, and even more importantly, that your doctors and your pharmacist and your therapist can collaborate in your care? Wow. It's logical, right? Like, why isn't healthcare like that?
3:05That would be amazing. So that's how it all started. Okay, so you already have a platform right now. Yes. Called Azova. Okay, so tell them what happens on Azova. Okay, so we call Azova a fully connected digital health ecosystem. Okay, and it is a place where you can go, you can get primary care, you can get urgent care, you can get pediatric, psychiatry, therapy, dermatology, sleep medicine, home sleep testing, at-home lab testing, nutrition, health coaching, all in one place. Incredible. So that connected ecosystem. All in one place. And so anyone from anywhere in the U.S. can log into this and become a member and get this type of care.
3:47Yes. So they never need to leave their house to go see a doctor. Correct. Correct. We have spent the last 12 years really innovating on, okay, what could we do from home? That's incredible. And every month there's another thing we can now do from home that you didn't used to be able to do from home. So people are doing blood work and sending it in? Yes. and then getting the exact diagnosis of what to do online. Yeah. Yeah. We have many different at-home lab test kits. We also offer all the functional labs, you know, so if you need a gut biome test or a SIBO test or a genomics test or a food sensitivities test or an oat test or a mycotoxin test, you can also get that through your functional medicine provider on Azova.
4:31So all these people that DM into me saying, I can't find a good doctor like you've found, or I can't find a functional medicine doctor, I can't find a doctor who will treat the root cause, they can just sign up at a Zova and find one. Yes. That is amazing. Okay, so now should we tell them what we're launching together? Yes, let's do it. Okay, why don't you explain it? Okay, so this has been in the works for a long time. It has. It is called Nutrition First Healthcare. I love it. Okay, so why Nutrition First Healthcare? Well, that's what healthcare should be. And it's not out there at all. Right.
5:06It's drug first health care, but it shouldn't be drug first health care. Right. It should be nutrition first health care. And so it's really giving that a name. I love it. It's the best name. And making that a norm. Okay. So explain to like a mom that's listening to this. I have lots of moms listening to this. So let's say we've got a mom who feels cruddy. Her hormones are all over the place. She's tired. She's gone to a doctor. Her labs say they're normal. She's listening to this show. What is she going to do? Okay. So she would go to our website and navigate. We have eight nutrition-first programs, okay?
5:41All of the programs are comprehensive. So all of them are going to look at your gut, your inflammation, your immune system, your thyroid, your everything. However, the programs are problem-focused, okay? So there's a thyroid health program, gut health and digestion, muscle and metabolic mastery. So if you're trying to increase muscle or lose weight, hormone balance for women and men, skin health, mental health, those are all included. Okay, so you choose which one is most problematic for you, noting that all of them are, you're going to get comprehensive, you know, everything's going to be addressed, but you're going to get special emphasis on that thing.
6:20So if you're dealing with Hashimoto's, pick the Hashimoto's one. If you're dealing with Crohn's disease, pick the gut health one, for example. What if they're dealing with multiple? Because I'm thinking like, oh, okay, I want to do the muscle mass one, but mental health might be interesting. Hormones. How do they know which one to pick? We actually have a little, my AI assistant on there that helps you. Her name is Zovie. Okay. Zovie for a Zova. It's like the baby of a Zova, Zovie. Cute. Okay. So Zobie, she takes you through a two-minute quiz. Okay. And she'll help you identify your primary drivers and your secondary drivers.
6:55Okay. And which one of our programs is going to be the most impactful for you. But all of our programs address all areas of your health. So if you're in the gut health program and you need hormones, that's not a problem. It's a functional medicine program. So functional medicine is de facto whole person care. Okay. Perfect. Okay. So let's say I signed up for the hormone one. Okay. I mean, I'm in perimenopause, so my hormones are all over. Me too. So then tell me what happens. Okay. I've now signed up on the website or I've gone to your website, which is what? It's azova.com, A-Z-O-V-A.com. Okay, azova.com.
7:31I've gone to azova.com, entered my info. I've clicked hormones. So you chose hormones and then you choose which level of care you want. So there are three different options. It's very affordable. It starts as low as$55 a month, up to$310 a month with your own functional medicine doctor. So the$55 a month option, all of them actually, include an initial consultation with a functional nutritionist. A functional nutritionist is a nutritional biology nutritionist. So it's more than just a basic nutritionist. It's someone who is trained in the functional med labs as it pertains to nutrition. So all the programs include an initial consultation, one-hour consultation with a functional nutritionist, a comprehensive assessment that's based upon the 22 domains of health.
8:17And you think, 22 domains of health? Well, I only have a couple organ systems, right? Well, there's more than just your organ systems coming into play, right? There's your energy. There's your mood. There's your motivation. There's all of those things come into play. So this assessment is looking at all of those things. Your nutritionist goes through the assessment and creates a plan with you. On the initial tier, you now have access to the community. So you have a whole year's worth of access to the community that is a live, moderated community that is expert moderated. So you have functional nutrition and functional medicine providers that are actually answering your questions and things like that.
8:52In America, for a doctor to give you medical advice, you have to have, it's called a physician-patient relationship. okay so in the community we can give you very specific medical advice but not just for you okay so we have to be careful to be compliant to get one-on-one medical advice you would need the top tier okay and that is the transformation program that includes eight functional nutrition sessions and then four functional medicine sessions and the community and all the assessments and the root cause analysis test. That top tier is for people who really have something going on. They're going to want to have lab testing.
9:30They're going to want to have one-on-one established physician-patient relationship kind of a thing. Okay, so let's go back to the first tier. Okay. So they get help from a nutritionist that completely understands the biology, the cells, the organs, everything. And so let's say we're in this hormone one and she's looking over the 22 different systems of the body. So then she looks at my report and is like, oh, you're lacking protein or you need some herbs or you need more fruits and veggies. You need more fiber. She's going to walk through all of that. She's going to walk through all of that. So functional nutrition is anywhere from identifying what your root cause drivers are.
10:09I mean, it is as a foundation, identifying your root cause drivers. That's the whole point, right? Identify your root cause drivers. Identify how you can treat them with nutrition, first of all. If you need more care, then you can upgrade to the program that gives you the lab testing and your own functional medicine provider. But the functional nutritionist is going to do things. So if you get the second tier, so the second tier is eight functional nutrition sessions. Your nutritionist will do things like go on a grocery store tour with you. She'll help you set up your pantry and your refrigerator.
10:39Oh, wow. She'll help you do menu planning. Wow. And everything as it pertains to what you're trying to solve. Oh, that's amazing. Yeah. Oh, menu planning. I'll sign up just for the menu planning. You got me some meals. That's incredible. Okay. So let's talk about this community. Okay. As a community, you get on tier one. So I could say I've signed up, I've picked hormones. I can say something like, I am really struggling with energy. I feel like my hormones aren't keeping my energy at the level they used to be. And then people chime in or the nutritionist chimes in. Yeah. So that, I mean, you're familiar with a Facebook group or a Reddit group.
11:15The difference here is it's information you can trust. Okay. Love it. It is a, an expert in that area that is going to share advice. You know, it can't be medical advice. Okay. Unless you have the top tier with your medical provider, but they're going to share specific advice. So things like, Hey, you know, how do you balance your zinc and copper ratio? Okay. Cause they've got to be in balance in order for either of them to work correctly or, Hey, I'm having bloating, you know, what would be the best thing to do. Okay. So maybe you need a SIBO test or things like that. They can make those recommendations for you.
11:49All of the tips and things that you learn from practicing medicine for a long time, it's not stuff that you can just read from a book. Love it. Right. The value of a community is that you learn from each other. Right. And I can't stress enough how important that is. Right. Well, and I love that there's a moderator though, because I mean, I even have a Facebook group and I try to have moderators in there, but still sometimes can get out of control really easily. So a moderator will always just bring the truth, which will be nice. Yep, exactly. Okay. So in these tiers, say I'm in the first tier, is there like blood work done?
12:24Are there labs done? How does that work? Yeah. So if you want to order blood work, so from your membership dashboard, you can choose lab testing and get it ordered. It does require a telemedicine visit because it's a prescription. Okay. So, but that is all provider from your dashboard, from your membership dashboard. So do you have this physician appointment as part of the tier or they're paying extra for that? So if you have the functional medicine tier that includes prescribing, lab ordering, prescriptions, all of that kind of stuff, the first two tiers are nutrition-focused tiers. Okay. If you just need a prescription for something, we also offer all kinds of telehealth services.
12:59So just straight up primary care, virtual urgent care. It's very affordable. You know,$59 for an urgent care visit. You know, so if you just need a prescription for something or you just need a lab order for something, you can get that from your dashboard as well. But if you really want to get into it and solve your problems and work with a functional med provider, you would need that top tier. I am now curious because our supplements are part of some of the protocols or recommendations. And so if you're tier one, how do they know which supplements to recommend? Okay. So for example, if you already know you have Hashimoto's, okay, or you already know you have a methylation problem or something like that, that's incorporated into your plan with a nutritionist.
13:37But when you do that assessment, the 22 domains assessment, we've created an algorithm that actually identifies, you know, our whole physician group has been deeply involved in creating this algorithm. It's not just an AI that spit it out. It's months and months of work. An algorithm that will make recommendations of what lab work that you need. Okay. From your dashboard, there's actually an appointment, a lab ordering appointment that's just for getting your lab orders. but if you want a functional med provider to go over it, because that can take hours sometimes, right? Yep. We'll get you a lab order and, you know, we provide lab results management and things like that as we legally have to.
14:14But if you want someone who's really going to work on that with you, you would want to either get a primary care provider on the platform who can do that with you longitudinally or a functional medicine provider. Okay. So I love getting my blood work read by a provider. I just always think it's fascinating. I do it sometimes like quarterly, sometimes twice a year, just to be like, I want, it's almost like a report card for me. Like, how am I doing? And so instead of going somewhere, I can just get the semi-annual blood work done on a ZOVA and meet with a doctor online who's going to read it all for me.
14:47And then they're going to recommend like, okay, your thyroid is struggling. Maybe here's a Justin Green's thyroid supplement or you're low in iron. So here's the Justin Green's iron to take. Exactly. The domains assessment is also built into nutritional protocols that I personally have been deeply involved in. So I am ultra obsessed with nutritional biology, always have been. That's why this is so exciting for me to do this. But your products are by design built into the protocols for the patients. I love it. So, you know, if you have functional hypothyroidism like I do, for example, your thyroid support supplement is the bomb.
15:23Thank you. It's like the perfect thing you need. Many mental health disorders, your methylated B vitamins, perfect for that. It's not the only thing they need, right? They need other things also. But these things are by design overtly integrated into the protocols appropriately based upon what you need. This is an amazing resource for people. We're excited. You know, it's something that we all need it, right? Yeah. I need it myself. I am a doctor and I don't have time to take care of myself. Right. But we all need it. You know, we need the convenience. We need access. We need the affordability, the efficacy.
15:57Yeah, we need all of that. Yeah. We also need this because so many doctors don't have time to be trained in nutrition and they don't know the nutrition aspect of it. We're going to change that. Yeah, I'm loving this. Yeah. So our program includes education for providers as well. So if you are a functional medicine provider or a functional nutritionist or a primary care provider, a psychiatrist, a dermatologist or a therapist, you can actually join our network. It is a nutrition first healthcare provider network. And we also have a community and a forum where we educate each other as well. It's pretty awesome.
16:31That is amazing because I know that there's a lot of therapists out there who with depression don't even talk about the nutrition side of it. And yes, I totally get that there are amazing treatments and things to do through talking and other types of therapy. But I also think nutrition needs to be discussed at the same time. Yeah. And so, but some of the therapists don't even understand the nutrition aspect of it. Right. And so I love that you're providing this to the providers as well. Okay. So let's talk about these moms with kids now. Okay. Is our kids allowed to do this as well, or is it only for adults?
17:11Yes. So children can do the program. The at-home lab test that comes with the top tier, we substitute that with any other lab testing. So we give you a credit towards other lab testing because that at-home kit is for 18 and up. So if we're doing a pediatric one, we give you a credit towards other lab testing because if you're enrolling in a functional medicine program, you're going to need some lab testing. Right. Right. Right. And so, but yes, we take children down to age six. There may be some states where we don't have someone for you. Right. You know, because it's, we have providers that are, you know, specifically trained in this, but we'll let you know when you sign up.
17:46And if we don't have someone, we can often find someone. It might take us a week if we don't have someone in pediatric, you know, functional pediatrics in that state, for example. Okay. So you, in this network, you've got doctors from every single state. Yeah. So there's different types of medicine. Doctors, nurse practitioners, PAs, and clinical pharmacists that are all certified, trained, and experienced in functional medicine. If it is a clinical pharmacist, we pair them up with a prescriber because they can't legally order the lab work or prescriptions. So we pair them up with a prescriber.
18:16But they're very, very good at this. Let's talk about what we're prescribing. Can you prescribe anything? Yes. We do not prescribe controlled substances. Okay. We will be doing testosterone in the future, but not yet. Okay. But in general, we're not going to do pain pills, things like that. That's very regulated and has nothing to do with what we're doing. Okay. But if someone's on a thyroid medicine, you can do that. Hormones, thyroid, low-dose naltrexone, GLP-1s, peptides, all of that is accessible through the program. Antidepressants, anti-anxiety. Okay. Yeah. So people can come to you and still get prescriptions, plus do their lab work and see if there's anything else that they should be on.
18:58Yes. So we also have a functional psychiatry program. So that's one of the eight programs. And these are providers who are specifically trained on the psychiatric functional medicine side. Oh, I love it. It's a different, you know, different lab testing that's involved. We launched it earlier this year. It's been amazing, you know, seeing how it can help people. So let's talk about this department. So someone dealing with anxiety, someone dealing with depression, bipolar, this is who they would go to. Yes. and then it's like online therapy sessions. It's not therapy. Okay. It's functional psychiatry.
19:33So functional psychiatry is looking at the biological drivers of your psychiatric disorder. Okay. So for example, we had a patient, 20-year-old male, severely depressed, and we ran his lab work. So for the functional psychiatry program, we're doing urine organic acids. We're doing food sensitivity testing. We're doing celiac testing. We're doing full thyroid testing. We're doing hair minerals and heavy metals testing. We're doing fatty acids testing, like the whole gamut. So you're sending all of these tests to this person and they do it. And they take it. And then mail it in. Yes. It's all the testing that is known to influence your mental health.
20:08Okay. Lab data that is, it's about 250 different biomarkers. In this case, this guy had no precursors to serotonin. His vitamin B6 was gone. He had overgrowth of a bacteria in his gut called Clostridia. Okay, Clostridia metabolizes the vitamin B6 that's used as the precursor for serotonin. Okay, his fatty acid profile was shifted towards the arachidonic acid pathway. So he had very inflammatory red blood cells. Okay, so he's been eating poorly. You know, highly processed foods is what turns on your arachidonic acid pathways. Anyway, we were able to help him fix his diet. Now got him on your omega-3s, got him on your vitamin D.
20:49His vitamin D was low. He also had a genetic, so a COMT. T, okay, met COMT mutation, okay, so he metabolizes serotonin differently and dopamine differently. So his nutrition was optimized towards that, okay? Love it. And if you need psychiatric medications, that can be added to it too. But let's look at your biology first, because we know your biology can be influenced by so many things. So many things. That can be improved with food. I love it. There aren't many people doing this. because I have a lot of extended family members and just family friends that are dealing with psychiatric issues.
21:29And some of the doctors don't really even know what to do. And they just give them a bipolar label. And so I have one really close relative who's like, yeah, I was just diagnosed with bipolar. They don't really know. And I'm like, no, we can do better than this. Now let's go see. Yeah, let's go see what's going on. So they're going to sign up for your program and then do all the lab work at home. And you guys are going to be able to figure out exactly what's going on. Yeah. I mean, we can't help every single psychiatric disorder, right? But anyone who is experiencing any sort of psychiatric disorder should have this lab testing done.
22:00This is incredible. And not just having it done, but also having it done with someone who knows what to do with the information. Yeah, that is incredible. Okay, so this seems like the answer for everybody's health confusion, health issues, all the excuses I get of I can't find a doctor, my doctor didn't know what was wrong, I can't find someone who looks at the root cause. This answers it all. It's healthcare the way it's supposed to be. Wow. You're going to change, hopefully, the whole healthcare industry with this. That's our goal. We actually trademarked the term, our healthcare system is too broken to fix, so we built a new one.
22:34Oh, you really did? We own a trademark on that. That is amazing. I love that. Okay. I'm curious about your eight programs that are on Azova. So I get a lot of people every day wanting medical advice, and I can't give them the medical advice, but it seems to be a trend over and over. So like one I get all the time is energy. By three o 'clock, I've crashed. I have no energy. So where would they go in this program? First of all, take the assessment with ZOVI because energy can be associated with a whole bunch of systems. It can be thyroid. It can be immune. It can be metabolism. All of those come into play.
23:11It can be hormones. It can be cortisol. It can be, I know that's why It's so hard when they DM in. I'm like, I don't know. There's like 20 different answers I could give you. Right. So have them do the little chat with Zovie. Okay. Because Zovie's going to ask you more questions than, hey, I am exhausted. Okay. And Zovie's going to help you identify your primary drivers and your secondary drivers, and we'll recommend which program to sign up for. Remember, all the programs cover their whole health programs. Okay. So we're not just going to do your hormones if you sign up for the hormone program.
23:42Okay. We're going to look at your thyroid. We're going to look at your gut. We're going to look at your immune system. But if you're signing up for the hormone program, that means, hey, menopause is my primary thing. I'm getting fat. I'm tired. I'm hangry. You know what I mean? Hot flashing. You know, sign up for the hormone balance program. Okay. But you're also going to get help with all the other things. It's functional medicine. Okay. Well, that is one question I get a lot because a lot of my followers are in the 40, 50-year-old range. So the perimenopause, I've got weight around my belly.
Read the full transcript
24:13I can't get this weight off. So they can even come to you for that. Yep. And they would go through that Zovie little chat and be placed in the hormone thing. If you know you want to do the hormone thing, you don't have to talk to Zovie. You can just sign up for the hormone thing. But yes, that's how it works. And then the nutritionist is going to help them get the fat off their middle section. Yep. Functional nutrition is awesome. I don't know if you've ever worked with a functional nutritionist, but I have. It's kind of like health coaching plus nutrition plus biology kind of all mixed together and lifestyle, you know, all mixed together.
24:46It's really wonderful. Just because I know everybody does this differently. So I'm trying to help the listener understand. So are they going to say like, these are great options for breakfast and these are great options for lunch and these are great options for dinner. They're going to help you set up your meal planning, your menus, your everything, what you pair with what, when you eat it, all that kind of stuff. Oh, I want to do this just to see what they would tell me. Yeah, you should. That's really fascinating. Are these meals so sometimes I've done these programs and the meals are so complex that I'm like, I do not have time to make that in the morning for breakfast before I'm running out the door.
25:20So your nutritionist is going to help you do something realistic, right? Because if you can't do it, don't, don't even talk about it. Yeah. Right. And, and I completely agree with you. That is what they're there for is to help you find something that you can actually do. Okay. So do you believe you can heal a lot of health issues with food? I do. And that we're overcomplicating it in the medical world? Absolutely. And we're prescribing things that shouldn't maybe be prescribed. And when you say just food, not just food, right? But it's food, lifestyle, supplements. Supplements are really important.
25:58Let's talk about functional hypothyroidism because I have it. So I've gone super deep dive in. I'm kind of obsessed with it. Okay. Okay. Functional hypothyroidism. First, tell my listeners what that is for those that don't know. Okay. It's not Hashimoto's. Okay. Okay. So Hashimoto's is if you're going to have antithyroperoxidase antibodies. Okay. And you're going to be hypothyroid. Functional hypothyroidism is you're slightly hypothyroid, but you don't have any antibodies. Okay. Okay. It comes from too much cortisol, which comes from too much stress, which comes from not sleeping enough. Right.
26:29Well, imagine that. You're busy. I am very busy. You're a doctor. You're a dermatologist. You're creating a software. And trying to change our healthcare system. You've got kids. You're a mom. Yep. Okay. Yeah. So anyway, I remember I was looking at my lab work. Okay. So your free T3 will be low. Your TSH will be close to normal. Your free T4 will be normal. Okay. Your free T3 will be low. Okay. Your reverse T3 will be high. And you don't even need a reverse T3. Okay. Because if your free T3 is low, then your reverse T3 is high. You can induce that. Okay. So to increase that, that also is a sign that you have an iodine deficiency, okay?
27:04Which is why I love your thyroid supplement. Because it's got some iodine in there. It's perfect. It's got the perfect combination of what you need for functional hypothyroidism, for example. Okay. So that's much easier than, well, first of all, it's better than taking a pill. I don't want to take a pill. I want to fix the problem. Yeah. Right? And that's really what this is about is fixing the root of the problem. Find out what it is that's causing it. You know, so many of these things track back to stress. Okay, like I would say stress, sleep, you know, calm yourself down. All of those things are really important.
27:38But okay, well, I love what you're saying because well, two things. I think people are tired of just putting a bandaid on things. They do want to fix the root cause. But let's talk about your case in this situation because you're extremely stressed, but that relates to a lot of other people. There are so many stressed people that are trying to work and they've got young kids and they're, you know, trying to just make ends meet or whatever. So I run into so many stressed people all the time. I'm stressed a lot of the time. So if stress is the root cause of a lot of these health issues, what do we do?
28:11You learn to manage it better. I've gotten a lesson in that in the last 12 months. Because of your thyroid? Well, because of my thyroid, I've paid more attention to it. Okay. Right. And this is something you can also work on with your functional nutritionist. But I'm sure you've heard of resetting your nervous system or vagal tone. Your vagus nerve goes to your gut, which controls your, you know, it also controls your immune system. Yep. Stress is your vagus nerve. Okay. So give it a break. You know, your vagus nerve is controlling your immune system. If you want to control your autoimmune disease, you've got to control your nervous system also.
28:50So some of the things that I do. Okay. So I exercise every single day. Yep. I go up in the mountains. I go hiking every single day. You cannot make me not do it. Good for you. You got to do that every day. Something every day. Please go outside. Okay. You know? So exercise every single day. I've also started using a device that I really, really love. It's probably the same one I'm using. Is it a Pulsetta? Nope. Okay. Okay. It's called Sense8. Okay. We're using two different ones. It's really awesome. I have yours also. Anyway, but it vibrates along with sound. Okay. It completely resets my vagus nerve.
29:28Because you know when you get like, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, put it on there, 10 minutes, reset. You're just relaxed. It's like, whoa, I can't handle the day today. Oh, I love it. You know what I mean? How is that different than the pulsetta? Pulsetta, you're putting on your vagus nerve. Okay. This is going over your thymus, okay, your thymus gland. is what controls all of your T-cells. Oh, interesting. And your T-cells are the guys that go and cause all the autoimmune diseases. They cause psoriasis. They cause alopecia areata, vitiligo. Calm down your vagus nerve. Calm down your immune system.
30:04But there are supplements that, you know, there's whole nutritional protocols that we're putting in place. Not just that, right? You've got to put the whole protocol in place. And then also cognitive restructuring, the way you think is really, really, really important. You got to do all of that at the same time. It's so important. We just had a sports psychologist on the show who talked all about that. And I've made my whole family listen to it. In fact, my son is going to his therapist. It's been amazing. Yeah. So I love that you brought that up. Yeah. I learned that from my mother who raised eight kids by herself.
30:39Oh, wow. The power of positive thinking, you know, and singing. Okay, well, singing and humming. And humming. Humming can help the vagus nerve. But sing because it's more fun than humming. I'm a hummer. I'm a hummer too. I always have a song playing in my head, but it actually helps your immune system and your nervous system. Because it's helping the vagus nerve. Yeah, it's sending vibrations down your vagus nerve that calms it down. Okay. So when I'm doing a surgery on you in my office and I'm humming. Oh, I love it. Which I always do. I don't do it on purpose. I'm like, oh, I'm humming. That's just because how I am.
31:16I've always been a singer like that, but that's a good thing. That is a good thing. So we should all be walking around humming. Maybe we should sing when we talk to each other instead of talking. I'm a terrible singer. Let's take a quick break to hear from our show sponsor. It's time to rethink your screen time. Not how much, but what kind of light you're actually looking at. Blue light, especially in the evening, can disrupt your body's natural sleep-wake rhythm by suppressing melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep and get restorative sleep. The red light converter from Bodyguards transforms the blue light emitted from your device into red light, which is easier on your eyes, kinder on your skin, and more supportive of your sleep.
31:58No settings, no behavior change, just a more wellness-aligned screen. If you love small upgrades that make a real difference, you can shop the red light converter on bodyguards.com. That's B-O-D-Y-G-U-A-R-D-Z. And use code JUSTINGREDIENTS to save at checkout. Now back to the show. Okay, so all those things help calm down the nervous system, which helps with that chronic stress to maybe help with our overall health. Yes. Okay, but you talked about not just reducing the stress, that obviously diet is a huge key, but also supplements. And I am a big believer that supplements are not a magic pill.
32:42Like you've got to do your part, obviously, with diet and nutrition and stress, but they are really important. Yes. And that's why I formulated them, because there is definitely a time and a place for them. But I'm curious, why did you choose just ingredient supplements? Well, first of all, your product line is very vast. And when you're creating functional medicine protocols, you need a lot of different things because we all got a lot of different problems. But we're also talking nutrition, protein, collagen, bone broth, like all of these tools that we need to improve our health. So your products also are very well formulated.
33:20They're obviously purposefully formulated to help people solve specific problems. You know, and I kind of think of them, they're a weapon in our arsenal for helping people to solve multiple different problems. Well, thank you. And I love our supplements. Magnesium. I don't sleep well unless I've got that magnesium. I think our iron is one of the best iron out there just because of the things we put in it so that your body will absorb the iron better. I mean, I could go through each one and be like, yeah, that's why we formulated it. And I put this in it because we needed, you know, X, Y, and Z.
33:54But we do have a lot of new supplements coming out that I'm excited to share with you. Great. That we'll have to. Yeah, we'd like to introduce them to our audience as well. Yeah, that we'll have to share with everybody. Okay, before we wrap this up, what do you hope that people take away from this? I hope that people take away a new perspective of how healthcare should be. How do we get that message out there? Because you do have the side that truly believes like, yeah, food can play a part. And let's look at the food first. Let's look at the diet. Yes, diet really plays a part. But then we still have the site over here.
34:29The doctors are saying food doesn't play a part at all. Food doesn't matter. And I just want to give you a quick example. So for instance, I've got an extended family member who thankfully caught things early, but had intestinal cancer. And the oncologist told her, it doesn't matter what you eat. You can eat whatever. And I'm like, it's your intestines. Like bull honky. Right. That's all I Get inflamed, right? And that is where we're eating food and who knows what is coming in contact with our gut lining. Of course it influences it. Well, and when she told me that, I literally wanted to give up.
35:04I'm like, I'm done. If we can't even, an oncologist can't even tell a cancer patient, yeah, it's in your intestines. Your food goes through your intestines. Like, yeah. And stuff, no, just go eat Doritos and Pringles and whatever you want. It starts with education in medical school. I got maybe two hours of nutrition in medical school. I know. Like the first year should be nutrition. Right. Right. And it's not. Instead, you know, I remember our pharmacology professor saying always be the first one to prescribe an old drug and the last one to prescribe a new drug. Okay. Because a new drug comes to market.
35:40You have no idea what it's actually really going to do. Yeah, they've done some clinical trials, but it hasn't been out in the wild. Right. And so many get recalled or so many have an issue. And about the same time, one of our other professors said, 10 years from now, 50 % of what we have taught you will be proven false. Oh, geez. Okay. So that imprinted me. That's where I got to be open-minded. I love that. I got to be open-minded and think deeper and keep asking questions. And I think something in our whole medical ecosystem is this fear of different thought. You know, I have providers that are like, that's not caused by that or whatever.
36:20It's like, come here, come to the table. Let's talk about this. I might not be right. But look, here's logic. This is how biology works. Don't you think maybe that could have something to do with it? We've got to be asking those questions to solve problems. It isn't just, hey, use this drug because a pharmaceutical company did a clinical trial and spent a billion dollars to prove that it influences this leg of the immune system. Yeah, it can influence that leg of the immune system. but what you actually need is something further upstream from that. It's really having an open mind as a healthcare provider that what you learn in medical school isn't necessarily the only way to do things.
36:57Oh, I love that. Well, all of us need to be curious is what I say. Like ask the questions. Is there a better way to do this? Is there a different route I should go? Being open-minded to other things, right? Like energy, for example. Energy is sound. It is wavelength. We know it influences our immune system. Yeah, most doctors are not going to talk about energy. I love doctors that will question things because that's what keeps you learning and researching. And discovering. Yeah, if we don't ask the questions, then our learning is stunted. So I love that you said that. And in fact, I love, so I actually went to a doctor about mold and I didn't love what he was suggesting.
37:40So I suggested something else and he was like, oh, that actually is a great option. Let's go that route and try that instead. Yeah. And so I was like, that's a good doctor who was willing to listen to me and think of a different option. Absolutely. And with that, don't be afraid to voice that. Absolutely. Your doctor doesn't know everything. They're human. Yeah. Right. And yeah, they've been exposed to a lot of people that have had a lot of things, but that is the only construct from which they can pull from. You've got your own construct. Use it. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Well, I love what you have built.
38:11I love that you're including just ingredients in it. I really hope that this just changes how we do health care and that people will look at their food first and their lifestyle factors and their stress and all of the things. And I love that this is so affordable. And I love that it's easy. People have computers, phones, they can do this online. I just love the convenience factor of this. So congratulations on everything you have done. We're really excited about it. And we should tell people it is live right now. It is up and running. You can go to zova.com, go pick your program, sign up. If you need a primary care provider, you need a pediatrician, you can do that as well.
38:48They can do it all. That is our goal, to create a fully connected ecosystem. You know, really, it's a two-sided marketplace, right? So there's the patients and there's the providers. You know, one thing we didn't talk about really quick is the provider side. Okay. You know, we are enabling providers autonomy. You know, that's Something that's very important to me is physician autonomy. Explain what you mean by that. Meaning you know what's right, what's best for your patient. Okay. Your hospital system, your insurance company, the pharmaceutical company should not be influencing the way you treat your patients.
39:21We're providing an ecosystem that enables that autonomy so that you can get uninfluenced health care. I love that. Because after COVID, you heard about a lot of that. Oh, yes. People wanted to do something else, but they couldn't. because of certain restrictions. Yeah. Well, that makes it really nice for the doctors. I would think the doctors would love this. We have so many doctors that want to join because it gives you autonomy, convenience, totally flexible schedule. You can see patients whatever hours you want, anywhere you have Wi-Fi, establish these great relationships with your patients in any state that you're licensed.
39:56It's really a great arrangement. You know, I'm just thinking, this is going to be great for my college kids. Like they take off to college, then they're not really by your doctor. by who they've been by. And now they just have it at their fingertips. Yep. Why wouldn't anyone want to use this? I don't know. I can't think of anyone it wouldn't be a good idea for. You know who I'm also thinking? Like my mom is very elderly and has a hard time leaving her house. I'm like, I need her to sign up on this. Because it is really hard to get her to her doctor's appointments. Yeah, it is hard. This is going to be incredible for all ages.
40:34Yes. And then I'm thinking like, dang, when I had newborns and toddlers, getting to a doctor appointment for myself was so hard. I hated taking my kids to the doctor because it's like, hey, you're sick with this. Let's go take you to the waiting room and go get sick with three other things while we're sitting there. So I always made every effort not to take my kids to the doctor because of that reason. Oh, my gosh. Well, this is going to answer so many health issues for a lot of people. We hope so. Thank you. That's our dream. Well, thank you so much. Is there any last things you want to tell about Ozova that we missed?
41:03So one last thing that we have built into Azova, when you're getting your supplements on our platform, you can actually save 30 % in pre-tax dollars because we're able to provide what's called a letter of medical necessity. So on Azova, when it's prescribed or recommended by a physician, a nurse practitioner, or a PA, okay, the nutritionist can't write a letter of medical necessity, but the prescribers can, okay? So when you see a provider on a ZOVA, even if you're doing a virtual urgent care, you can say, hey, can you order me some just ingredients stuff? They can issue a letter of medical necessity so you can use your HSA FSA card pre-tax.
41:42So it works out to be 30 % less because you're not paying taxes on that. Oh, my gosh. I'm so glad you brought this up. Okay. So they could be seeing an urgent care doctor for strep and they're running out of their magnesium and are like, can you write me a letter for magnesium? Yep. or I'm running out of protein powder. On their system, they can order whatever it is you need. Okay. Excuse me. They can order whatever it is that you need. And then it sends you a shopping cart that you check out. And then it sends you the letter of medical necessity. So you can use that to submit to your insurance to get reimbursement if they require it.
42:16That's the way to do it. That's pretty sweet. Buy the protein powder, electrolytes, your main staples. Your whole nutrition, everything. Tax-free. Yep. Oh my gosh. All people should be doing that. Yeah. Yeah, it's kind of like those duty-free shops in the airport. Right, right. But for your health care, nutrition stuff. Yeah, that is a way to do it. Yeah. You know, we're here for you, and we are learning and growing together. Okay, like innovating in health care is extremely difficult. Yeah, it is. Okay, it's very regulated. It has taken 12 years to get where we are. Wow. And I think we're just beginning.
42:48Okay, it's been a 12-year journey just to get here, to get around all the regulatory, like to be able to do what we're doing, the workflows and things like that. It's not perfect. We're still learning, but it's going to get better every single day. So come join us. Give us your feedback. We want your feedback. We will take your feedback and let's build this healthcare ecosystem the way it should be. Can you believe you're here? Oh my gosh, I'm exhausted. I'm sure. 12 years. Yeah. And I know what type of person you are. You will make this better and better and better because you're not satisfied with an okay thing.
43:21You want the best that you want. I am a tinkerer. I got to fix and fix and fix and fix. Yeah. Until everybody joins. Yep. I always end my podcast by asking the guests these five quick questions. Okay. And so number one, what emerging health topic are you most excited about right now? Genomics. Well, you better tell people what that is. Oh my gosh. Okay. A quick answer. Okay. This is where we're going. So your genetics, your genes influence a lot. Not everything, but they play a big role and can guide your nutrition and your supplementation protocols. We're going there. So that's going to be part of a ZOVA.
44:00Yes, yes. So like the MTHFR variant. That's just scratching the surface. That's just scratching the surface. You know, my obsession from that comes from the fact that in my family, we have 12 different autoimmune diseases, which I think is why I'm so obsessed with nutritional biology. And it's like, I'm going to solve this problem, right? You know, like, it's just been a driver of my soul. I recently had my whole exome sequenced. Okay, your exome, those are the active genes. Okay, there's your whole genome and your whole exome. I had my whole exome sequenced. I have eight different mutations. Oh, interesting.
44:35In the inflammatory pathway, including the very top of the line in IL-1 beta. So IL-1 beta is a cytokine inflammatory pathway that drives all the downstream immune system. Interesting. I have a mutation in the IL-1 beta receptor inhibitor. So you have an inhibitor that controls the receptor. Okay. I have a mutation, so the receptor is uncontrolled. Oh, my goodness. Okay. So what can you do about that? All kinds of things. Okay. From a nutrition standpoint. Turmeric? Selenium. Okay. Okay. Selenium, omega-3s, vitamin D, your turmeric, curcumin. There are many different things. You don't want to just go do all of those.
45:17Okay. You do need to be careful with polyphenols. Oh, interesting. If you are an autoimmune-y person, some of them are safe, but some of them can actually drive immune disease. Echinacea can drive autoimmune disease. So work with someone who's educated and helping you to supplement correctly. But things like that are why I am so obsessed with this. You know, I don't want to go take a biologic drug. Right. You know, I want to influence everything I can in my body's environment. to help it to be healthy. So where do you get gene testing done like that? We will be launching that soon, and I'll let you know.
45:53Oh, as soon as you launch that, I want to do that, because that sounds fascinating. It's pretty awesome. Sometimes you just know the basics. Like, I'm like, okay, I know I have an MTHFR variant. Okay, I know to reduce folic acid, and I know, you know what I mean. I know the basics, but to really delve into it would be... It's coming, but it's the interpretation of the data is the key. It is so much data. So complex. Right. So much data, but it's coming. OK, good to know. OK, question number two. What's a piece of advice you give your younger self? I was thinking about this because you guys gave me those five questions.
46:27I would tell her, hey, get ready. You're going to have to change the health care system. No big deal. But get ready, girl. Your younger self would have been like, what? What does that mean? Don't sign me up for that. Right. OK, number three. What's the one health practice you'll never compromise on no matter how busy life gets? Hiking outside in the mountains. Love it. Number four, what's your favorite Just Ingredients product and why? French vanilla protein powder. I have a smoothie addiction. Okay. Okay. My team knows like every morning I'm drinking my smoothie and I have sometimes too many smoothies in one day.
47:03What's your go-to items in a smoothie? I have a couple. Yeah. I'll do a peach pineapple banana smoothie. I'll do that. I'll do a strawberry blueberry. I always have avocado in there as well. Okay. So avocado, I do coconut powder in there also is super yummy because it makes it kind of creamy. Yum. I'm dairy free. So. Oh, that's amazing. Super yum. Okay. And last question. What is the best ingredient you found to life? Family. I love that. That's why we're here. Right? Like really intentionally spending time with your family and letting them know how important they are to you. I love that. and I love that though it comes from a working mom because I have a lot of working moms that listen to this show you are a working mom and I am a working mom it is hard to find the balance and so you got to be overt about it yeah and be intentional about it yeah I love that well thank you so much for being here today I know you're busy and running to patients as soon as we're done but I am so excited about this Azova and having the just ingredients supplements on there and this is going to go big.
48:11Yes. I'm putting it out there. So, okay. Thank you. Thank you so much for being here to be with you. Thank you for being here and being part of this community. Don't forget to subscribe to the Just Ingredients podcast. We've got so much more to share with you. And if you're not already, come join us daily on all social media platforms at just.ingredients. From the publisher
Dr. Cheryl Lee Eberting is paving the way in the functional medicine world. Her focus on nutrition first and prescriptions second is a mission I really align with, and I'm so glad she's tackling this challenge head-on. I think this is going to become a powerful tool for my listeners and honestly, it's an approach I hope the rest of the medical world follows one day. If you've ever left a doctor's appointment feeling unheard or frustrated you don’t have access to the tools you need, this conversation is just for you! Here are a few keys from our discussion:
"Normal" labs don't mean optimal health. Cheryl Lee breaks down why so many moms get told everything looks fine on paper while still feeling exhausted, foggy, or just "off" and why that gap is exactly what nutrition-first care is designed to close.
Functional medicine doesn't have to be out of reach. Through AZOVA, she's built a way for regular families to access functional medicine doctors, labs, and ongoing monitoring without the traditional cost and access barriers.
Monitoring matters more than a one-time test. Instead of a single snapshot of your health, AZOVA's ongoing monitoring piece lets you actually track how your body responds over time, and adjust from there.
Supplements should be personal, not generic. Recommendations are built around each person's actual labs and needs, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
You don't have to wait to start. Cheryl Lee shares small, practical steps a mom can take this week to start moving toward nutrition-first health, even before signing up for anything.
Tune in now and share this one with a friend who is looking for access to more “whole”istic wellness.
