In short

ADHD at work and social life, plus a “worst company credit card spend” story.

Guests

The host and a guest who’s diagnosed with ADHD four years ago and takes ADHD medication that affects appetite.

Guest backgrounds

Works in an office setting; relies on long-time colleagues (named Lucy and Kayla) for trust and openness.

Key claims

ADHD causes emotional exhaustion from “performing” in social/work settings—constant reading of people and masking until home. Forgetting can trigger negative feedback, felt personally. Support works best via trusted colleagues who understand how ADHD changes workflow.

Notable examples

Accidentally winning a £6,000 Stormtrooper helmet at a charity auction (JJ Abrams donation) due to awkward bidding; ADHD pills reduce lunch appetite; finance tasks are painful due to attention to detail (e.g., invoice amount typing errors).

0:00Never wear a suit, so I'm feeling slightly self-conscious a bit, but never mind. And your hair's amazing. Thank you. Do you always do that? What? Your hair like that. No.

0:16I'm notoriously unkept as an individual, so this is, yeah, it looks like I've prepped for this, but I haven't. Yeah, no, fair enough. What is the worst thing you've spent on your company credit card? I was at a charity auction for Michael Elliott, well, property agents. Yeah. It was a really important charity and lots of, you know, big money. Big money. There was a Stormtrooper helmet that was donated by JJ Abrams and he put a British flag on top. And it was meant to raise at least like 10 grand. Starting bids were at five and no one was bidding. It got really awkward. So I was like, well, I'll help me move on.

0:54I'll put my hand up for six grand. I have not got six grand. I was going once and I just feel my sphincter sort of loosening up. Going twice, I was like, oh boy. I was just going three times and I was like, well, this is, I had, you know, I had constipation, but not anymore. So I inadvertently brought a six grand Star Wars hat. What do you do for lunch? I am not good for going for lunch. Do you not? Well, because I take ADHD pills, which obviously skewers your appetite. so i don't seriously yeah yeah so it goes from one spectrum to the other oh i see so if they're wearing off sort of thing yeah i'm just i didn't know you had hdhg oh yeah yeah diagnosed with it four years ago do you talk about it yeah why wouldn't you oh i i love it if you do but like i just didn't know some people are a bit like we don't want to talk about it i would i think lean into it as a strength it's it's i know it's not strange it's irritating it's annoying obviously you say I've got ADHD people feel like me it's not really a lot of thing it was just it get over it you're like no it's a thing so that's kind of annoying itself but also you don't want to forget things you don't want to be distracted you do want to stay focused you do want to be like be normal because you know when you forget stuff when you do you do react negatively people then give you negative feedback they don't mean to but you take it pretty personally and that's really draining so that whole thing becomes it's an exhausting thing to have what is something that people don't know about ADHD that you reckon their world should know I actually think how taxing is like it is exhausting it's the emotional exhaustion of it so you a lot of it is when you come into a work setting or social setting like this you do find yourself performing you are putting on an act you're constantly reading people's one of the benefits is you're typically very good at reading people and reading sort of the emotions in the room that's great because it means that you can excel in the meet room excel in sort of social situations but then by proxy while performing you're constantly not putting on a mask and having to show yourself in a different light and by the time you get home it is you're done because that's the only time you can feel yourself feel yourself is there anything that um like your colleagues do differently like to support you i think especially with Lucy and Kayla, they've known me the longest, but I guess they just, I can trust them and I think that's just a key piece of it of like you know I can be myself around them and not worry that they're going to disappear or sort of you know be angry in the long term, it's yeah we can have that conflict, we can have that sort of openness.

3:36I don't think they need to do anything necessarily different but allow me to sort of I guess recognize that I find some bits more difficult more challenging you know maybe that's it I don't know sometimes the way that I behave or how I engage isn't always what they want isn't always suited to them sometimes it is really frustrating for them sometimes it's I can't just the other thing I don't want to hide behind it so I you know has to kind of have a balance on both things but I think yeah being able to trust trust your colleagues with how you have ADHD and how it sort of inhibits or does improve your your personal workflow and how it then aligns to theirs.

4:18Yeah what's one task you give out like you don't like doing mate or? Oh finance, like if I if I could fully automate finance is a pain in the arse no one enjoys it it's like it's oh yeah you could get rid of that would be be wonderful i don't know i can do it but it's just like again it's the attention to detail thing of like okay you can send an invoice for 14 792 pounds and 73p but i typed in 72 people no i can't pay that anymore but i was just thinking about like the hd thing and about the chaos of like emails and just like there are so many of them i would charge everyone a quid every email you have to charge a pound a bit like the 10p bag ah why not take it why not take a bag well i'll take my own one if you put a quid on every email people just stop sending needless crap and then i wouldn't have to chase such endless emails of like little checks and balances left right and center

5:24right we're coming back to your office so you've got to get on with your day but who do you nominate next for the to come in the cab with me. Stephen Adams story.
