In short
Ben Shephard and Joel Dommett update listeners on their skincare brand FOR SKIN, including where they are in development (third formulation iteration; starting stability testing; planning a small public drop in a few months). They recap a “Comedy and Cream” event where attendees tested products and filled feedback forms, and they discuss skincare myths/claims in a quiz segment.
Guests
No external guests appear as interviewees; product testers are mentioned: Trini (uses a human shield—Mark applies it), Kat (feedback: moisturizer feels like it sits on skin/not enough absorption), Ed Gamble (tries moisturizer; compares to Gollum/Motion capture; notes smell and overuse), Nish Kumar (tries “Foreskin” moisturizer; comments on smell like E45; asks about face use and rash risk), and Mark (chief creator; tests cleanser/moisturizer). Nadine Bagger appears as the myth-quiz host.
Key claims/examples
Moisturizer should build warmth over 2–3 days; cleanser and moisturizer are the two initial SKUs. Myths discussed: cucumber slices reduce puffiness but don’t fix dark circles; gravity can’t be beaten by upward strokes; positive affirmations don’t scientifically improve absorption; snail mucin is a real luxury ingredient.

0:13Joel Dommett:Hello and welcome to The Businessmen. It is I, Ben Shephard and this is the podcast that speaks to some of the most influential people in the business while mine and Joel Dommett's attempts to start our own skincare brand. fails or thrives. Oh, and guess whose voice this is back in the studio. Joel Dummett is back in the studio. Imagine people clapping. Can I just have a moment? Can you put your sunglasses on, please? Yes. You can tell Joel's been away. If you're watching on the YouTube, you'll see he's wearing a very natty suit. Thank you. He's come in with shades on. It covers up the bags. You've changed, Dummett.
0:54I've got an event tonight because what happens when now I'm a parent is I don't come into town very often. And when I do, I absolutely pack it full. I pack it full. And so, yeah, I'm so sure of this, Ben. You are. I'm going to a premiere. What? Oh, God, it feels so odd standing on a grey carpet. You know what I mean? It just suits red.
1:19Joel Dommett:You need some champagne. You need the red carpet and you need cheering crowds. So I'm wearing a vest under a suit. I think this is the right vibe. I'm very unsure. It's very Miami Vice. I like it. Do you like it? It'll look like I'm about to sort of roll over a bonnet. Can we have a little moment, please, for the arrival of Dutch Domit? Dutch. Dutch Cooper Domit has arrived. And I'll tell you what, he is an absolute delight. Bless his heart. He is... He was hairy. He's a hairy boy. He's got his dad's hair. I think he looks like me. He does. Wild's looking a lot like Hannah. Yeah. More and more.
1:54Joel Dommett:Yes! One each. Domit. The little Dutch Cooper Domit. Really chill. Because he has to be. It's that classic second child. DCD. Where he just fits it like Wild just like pokes him in the face. Like there was one point where he just stuck his tongue in his mouth. Oh, that was so. I mean, it was so. But by the way, you sent me that video. And he's sort of cuddling Dutch. And he does exactly what I know his dad would have done when you were a little boy. because you can't help put your wet things in holes. And he's stuck his tongue into Dutch little mouth. Is that weird that I'm sending Ben Shepard videos of my children snogging each other?
2:30That's a weird thing, isn't that? I think that's weird. I felt strangely at home. It's so cute, man. I mean, you've done it to me so many times. It just made sense. That is it. That's so true. It's just bonkers. And I know I've repeated myself over and over, But it's so nice to talk to you about it all, knowing full well that you are further ahead in the process. And you are, in a strange way, at not the end, but the end of your ownership of them. Because they've gone to university and I'm right at the beginning. They're literally like this tiny little thing in your hand.
3:06Joel Dommett:I love it. It's gorgeous watching the two of them together. Is he sleeping all right? He's actually doing all right. But, you know, it goes up and down. it goes up and down you go like oh my god I think we're smashing it and then your world falls apart and then it you know so it's but again he has to he's chill because he has to be because his big brother is just constantly just pushing him grabbing him hugging him loving him loving him and just he doesn't understand how when a hug is nice and when a hug is like asphyxiation it's man it's absolutely it's it's mad. There's a reason why I'm wearing sunglasses, not only because I'm going to a premiere, but also because I am very tired.
3:49I'm on the train on the way here. I properly did that thing of falling asleep. Woke up in like Waterloo station. Someone woke me up because the train was about to leave again. Were you dribbling? I was like dribbling all over my premiere suit. That's the thing. People see you on a photographs on a red carpet premiere. They don't picture the image that you're on a train in Waterloo being woken up by an 85-year-old lady. Thank you for Miss Justom. It's great to be back. Thank you so much for holding this wonderful thought and thing together whilst I was away. You're a good man.
4:43Joel Dommett:Well, I've loved it. It's been fun. We've had some amazing people in. Incredible. I've been getting some incredible insight from some leaders in business and people who have been through extraordinary experiences, which has been absolutely fascinating to sit alongside. Real privilege, actually. But, of course, the last time our listeners or viewers saw us was when we were in the Sweatfest. Oh, my lordy lord. That was our comedy and cream night. Our comedy and cream night. it's the hottest I've ever been in my life. And bear in mind, then, I'm famous and I own a sauna. You were hotter than that.
5:19I was hotter than I was in a sauna.
5:20Joel Dommett:You've been in the jungle, in the heat of the bush. You've been in the bush. I did feel very healthy after it. Yeah. It was wonderful. Your skin looked amazing. My sort of, those heat touch proteins or whatever they're called that happened. I felt like they were... They exploded all over the audience. Absolutely. But what a night. what a night and it was great to sort of listen to it back and and uh and you are brilliant in front of an audience you have a you have a command of an audience that is just so natural to you i was just so drunk i think i just essentially so we had the plan and it was and and joel being brilliantly joel going yeah yeah don't worry it'll be fine yeah don't worry but you're fine yeah yeah don't worry but i'm like joel it's actually tonight can we can we but you you just held my hand brilliantly and I really enjoyed it the the the audience were very receptive yeah it feels really exciting now this moment where people are trying it and giving us feedback when I get that feedback from you know I know we're going to get on to it in a second but the videos from from Trini and from you know from Kat and and people trying it and giving us their honest feedback it feels genuinely exciting yeah um and it feels like a mad old route that we've been on and hopefully we are doing the right thing.
6:42Joel Dommett:From a crazy idea that we had sitting down to the fact that we're at this point where we're at the third iteration of the formulations for the products, the moisturiser and the cleanser at the moment. We were about to start the stability testing. We have an idea of a small drop that we're going to put out to the public to be able to buy in a few months' time, touch wood if everything goes to plan. you know it it we're buffoons like do you know i mean i can't organize my way out of a paper bag most of the day yeah and what i've learned from from listening to the podcast with you and uh doing the podcast before i was a parent of a second boy um is that every everyone's a buffoon yeah at some point you're absolutely right and i think it's uh being it's having the confidence in your buffoonery that means that you can sort of go, and I'm worse at that than you are.
7:39You're very good at sort of going like this, this, this, this, this, and then it turns into this. Whereas I'm very much, I'm really, because I've, you're much better at working with other people than I am, and I'm learning a lot from you in that regard.
7:53Joel Dommett:That's because you stand up. Yeah, I think it's really interesting. I'm very, I've just, I've created whatever my brand is over 20 years of just working alone. And so this is essentially, I know we work on television shows and where you are working with other people, but you as a brand yourself, you're always working on it yourself. Even to the point where when you're doing your own socials and you're doing lots of things and sort of bringing in these different elements from different places. It's been absolutely fascinating for me. And I think a big learning experience to sort of understand how to work with other people, really, I think, which I'm still learning.
8:31Joel Dommett:Yeah, you've got to share the ball occasionally. Yeah, exactly. But, you know, that's part of the mistakes that we're making along the way and the learnings have been incredible. We've got some feedback from some of our familiar faces, literally faces as well, who have been lending their skin to our foreskin. Should we hear what they had to say? Yes, please. Do you know what's in there? Yeah, full skin.
8:58Oh, it lathers up nicely.
9:00Joel Dommett:Okay, good. So you're liking the early lathering? Yeah, I like that. I'm going to do it on the thighs. Feels as though it's cleansing, but not stropping my skin completely. Can I use this little cloth? Is that all right then? You're quite vigorous, aren't you? I am. How's that feel? It feels fresh, feels clean. Can I have a look in the mirror? It's hard to do it when you're not. Oh, yeah. Yeah, well done. You've got that lovely erythema, that lovely glow. Yeah. Lovely glow. You did all right there, mate. You've got a lovely glow. Clearly, it's Joel who's done all right. Has it worked so well? I like it.
9:43Does your skin feel tight? No. Doesn't feel tight, but it does feel clean, though.
9:48Joel Dommett:It's about time to be honest. It's not. So basically this is the moisturizer, which should just warm you up a little bit. So be interested to see what you think of this texture wise and absorption. Yeah, no, I like the feel. Spider!
10:06See, I've gone a bit heavy handed on that. I don't know what I mean. I'll wake up tomorrow and finish it's okay. Yeah, I need that to sink in a bit more.
10:15Joel Dommett:Yeah. It's like one of those videos when someone's pouring the shampoo and you can't stop it. It never stops. And it keeps foaming. But think how amazing your skin will feel once you've rubbed it in. Uh-huh. Do you want to come back to me on Monday? Just to leave me here over the weekend. Hello, it's Ed Gamble here, the host of multiple Visualize Companion podcasts. That's what you might know me from. Just using it for skin for the first time. I've not rubbed it in yet. I'm just enjoying the feeling of it on my face, which is why I look like I'm about to do motion capture like Gollum. But I don't look like Gollum, because I'm using for skin.
10:56And if you look like Gollum, this will sort you out. It's a good tip actually, if Gollum's watching, just use some for skin. I am gonna rub it in, and I'm gonna rub it in the same way all men rub moisturizer in. So let's see how this feels. I might have used too much. The thing, you don't need as much as this if you are using products.
11:25Oh, yeah, I've used too much, guys. Little tip, if you are buying for skin, which you should, because it's a lovely product, Ben and Joel really made sure you don't need to use a whole bottle of your face. Yeah, that's not going to rub in. I've really messed up here, but it feels nice. Oh, it's like a baby's bottom. If you'd use too much moisturizer on a baby's bottom. This is the sort of sexy advert you're after, eh? Whoa, smooth. Hello, my name is Nish Kumar and I'm holding in my hand, Foreskin, which is the inexplicable name of the inexplicable business started by, let's not beat around the bush here two absolute buffoons ben shepherd and joel domit i expected better of shepherd i know domit's a moron i'm now i've got the moisturizer in my hand i'm now going to try it for the first time it's jizzy i'll say that for it let's give it a smell it smells quite like e45 cream it's sort of a white cream it's sort of collapsing in my hand as I speak.
12:42And let's... I do get very dry hands, so actually I do need moisturiser on my hands all the time. It's for your face. It's for my face? You could have told me that! Go again. Put some on your face. OK, now I'm putting some on my face. OK. I'm now... I'll keep an eye on this and update anyone. If this causes me to get a rash, I'm going to sue the slightly too tight trousers off both for those bellets. John and Ben, all right. Face moisturize, you see that first, I'm not filling in a bloody form. This is Mark, he's our chief creator, Derek. I've asked him to try it. I try my face. On your face and see your first thoughts of it.
13:25It's very light. How's it feel, the product? Silky, I really like it, it's super light. It smells good. Yeah, it does smell nice. And it's slightly breaking. it's I think micro encapsulation not that they're going to get any can you see tint? I'm seeing a breakage of tint when you rub it in oh yeah there you can see it's a bit of micro encapsulation there the one thing I'd want to ask is how many shades are you going to do so you're inclusive because this would be your shade but I don't really see much of a tint no I don't, we don't see much of a tint oh it's developing you can see it a little that's quite nice actually because it's not scary for men.
14:10Yeah. You know, it's kind of developing slowly. Nice on your skin. It feels very light. Yeah? Yeah. Okay, great. I like it. Good. It looks nice on your skin. Yeah, it looks. So we'd say the face moisturizer sounds good. The gel cleanser, I'll try tonight at home and give you my candid feedback.
14:29Joel Dommett:So firstly, thank you to our friends and mentors for trying our products. I mean, that's the thing as well, isn't it? Trusting us to have formulated something that they'll put on their skin. Yeah. Titans of the industry as well. Trini. Huge. I noticed that she didn't use her own face, though. That is true. She deployed a human shield and Mark put it on, which seems appropriate as well, though. Yeah. It feels like, you know, when Henry VIII used to have like a meal. Yes. And he used to have someone to try the meal. The Royal Taster. To make sure he wasn't being poisoned. Poisoned by the enemy. She was looking at him quite keenly, wasn't she?
15:10Joel Dommett:But so they were talking about the sort of warmness, the glow that you'll get from the moisturizer. It's going to take a couple of days to build up. I mean, I think because Mark's got sort of he's got quite pale skin, then obviously he felt like he could see something building. But if he the whole point of the moisturizer, if you use it over two or three days, it will slowly improve the warmth in your skin. I thought Kat's feedback was really interesting with regards to the moisturiser. Yes. Saying that she likes the feel of it, but it's not really moisturising. It's not sinking into her skin.
15:42Joel Dommett:It's sitting on her skin. And we've changed the absorption rate, I think, from the first iteration. Because the first one, I definitely felt that. But that's probably, again, it's so impossible to have something which suits every person's skin. Of course. And someone like Kat, who has beautiful, incredible, like, silk skin, which is just like she's looked the same since I used to look at her in FHM when I was 14 years old. I'll say this to you in private, Ben, but she was always my favourite. What, out of her and Ant & Dec? Out of the FHM top 100 women. Was she? Did you vote? She was always my favourite.
16:27She was always my favourite. Man, she is such an incredible broadcaster. Great egg.
16:33Joel Dommett:But even, but interestingly, of course, we know that men's skin is different to women's as well. And that's the thing. It needs to satisfy our skin. We want people, anybody, they're gender neutral. Anybody can use them if they like. If it works for them, you like how it feels. But that sort of feedback has been really, really valuable. And the feedback we've had from the community that came to the Comedy and Cream Night, they've been filling out our feedback forms on all of the cleansers and moisturizers they got. and it's been really fantastic to gauge what people generally think yeah yeah and obviously there's anomalies of things where you know where someone thinks something that's a bit out of the box from everyone else but then it's like getting that population and going like okay 19 out of 20 people say something then we're going to change it you know and it's that's the process we're we're starting on and it feels uh it's very exciting that we're nearly there so we've got two SKUs get us with our knowledge two SKUs two products at the minute the cleanser and the moisturiser yes how are you feeling about that?
17:33Joel Dommett:feels like it's the right thing to start with certainly cornerstones of any routine right? and what's something that we've really experienced with this whole process is is sort of realising that there's so many men that don't even have a routine at all like not not and we're targeting those people but we're also targeting people that maybe have a simple routine that maybe want a bit of help to you know get that routine down have something you know to follow and uh and so we've uh we've gone with those two things that we think that you should not do without in your um in your routine and that is the cleanser and the moisturizer and i i've used a lot of different cleansers a lot of different moisturizers a lot skincare over the last sort of three or four years and I really really like these products
18:36just grabbed a paddle from below the table Ben that can only mean either one of two things it's the truth it's truth or myth or you're about to spank me I would like to do all of the above
18:47Joel Dommett:Pleased it. However, we're on the wrong sort of YouTube. It's fantastic. When the amazing Nadine Baggett came in, she tested me with some skincare myths. And I'm going to test you, Joel, to see whether you know your myths from your truths. I think you'll be all right. Okay. I think you'll be all right. Good luck. Frankly, I surprised myself. Not that I want to put any pressure on you, but I was pretty good. Okay. Okay, no brush. First question. Yes. Skin is the body's largest organ. Myth or fact? It is truth. It is a truth. You're absolutely right. It is. Cucumber slices actually fix dark circles.
19:32Joel Dommett:Truth or myth? I'm going to say truth because there's got to be a reason why people don't. It's got moisture in it. And moisture, I think, is probably good for your eyes at some point. Let's give it a go. You're going truth? I'm going truth. Why not? It's a myth. Oh, God damn it. So it's a little bit of a tricky one, this one, because I went with you. I absolutely agree. Of course, I was asking whether they can fix dark circles. They can reduce puffiness temporarily, and obviously it helps you look cool, but they're not actually the miracle cure. That's a fun little snack. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So there's a little bit of reducing the puffiness, and then do that game.
20:11Joel Dommett:You know we do the after eight game, and you have to get it down your face. Do that with a... Get it down. I've got a makeup artist who did this, and I did this during the heat wave. It's fantastic. Put a cucumber into the freezer and then take it out of the freezer and then rub it all over your face, and it takes down puffiness. It's good for your skin, a bit of moisture. So an actual... Actual real cucumber. An actual real cucumber. Yes. Why would you not just use a bit of ice? There's got to be something good in a cucumber, isn't it? Who knows? Okay, next one. myth or fact, applying moisturiser with upward strokes helps fight gravity.
20:54I think so, yeah. I think that's true. I think that's true because I think if you... I'm really into my facial massage right now. You love it. You keep sending me videos of people massaging your face. When you say upward strokes, like, you know, if you're doing that, that's not going to change anything. But if you, you know, if you properly put your... If you massage your face and put your... Lymphatic system. All that stuff. I genuinely think that is the key with good products to changing your face.
21:25Joel Dommett:So you think it's true? I think it's true. It's a myth. Oh, fuck. Yeah. Gravity is undefeated. Your face can't be tricked by aggressive hand movements. I think that's wrong. So I'll let you have this out with Nadine Bagger. I think that's wrong. I'm happy to accept your anger. Shut up, bagger! You can't beat the bagger. You can't beat the bagger. Okay. Dermatologists recommend speaking kindly to your skin while applying products because positive affirmations improve absorption. That's got to be a myth, hasn't it? You know, now King Charles, previously Prince Charles, was derided when he used to talk about the fact that he used to talk to his plants to help them grow.
22:11There is research with that.
22:13Joel Dommett:Yeah. So do you want to change your thoughts on this? Should you be talking to your skin as you apply products? If plants and tomatoes like being spoken to and they grow more abundantly? I'm going to say this, right? Positive affirmations, I think, absolutely do work. I think if you talk to yourself and make yourself feel better about life, and then you will feel happier, you will be brighter, and your skin, as a result, will look better. So I think... Scientifically. Scientifically. I'm still going to say it's a myth. It is a myth. You're absolutely right. You tried to drag me over to the other side there, Ben.

22:52Joel Dommett:was putting the evidence out there. I think it's important that I make sure you're sure. I'm sure. I'm going against the king. Don't go against the king. One of the many reasons why I still haven't got an OB. If, though, as you write, well, it's a question that's been asked a number of times. Why is this guy? What is going on? It's probably because you work with me. Have you thought about that? Have you thought about that? I was on the fast track, and then suddenly you went, hmm, what's he doing? You're a national treasure, mate. It's only a matter of time. You're an absolute national treasure.
23:22You need sort of a recommendation. If it helps, if I could help out. Do you know what I mean? If I could, like, maybe send a letter and go, like, just to let you know he's a national treasure.
23:33Joel Dommett:He's ready. You know, like a Soho House membership. I'll be happy. Yeah. Just like someone. You have to put three witnesses. And a comedy. You have to write your favourite joke. Yeah. You have to do that now. Well, my son's called Dutch, and the king is Dutchie Originals. They came up with that, so that's got to be an in. It's all Dutch. I named my son after a biscuit. I love that. After a fantastic cracker that you have for cheese. Right, last one. Back on. A snail can produce enough slime in one month to fill a shot glass, which has inspired several luxury skincare ingredients. Truth. I know this.
24:08It's like called something. And apparently it's really good for skin. It's not for me, but I really hate snails. They love my bins. They love my bins. But good for your skin. Good for your skin. I'm not sure it would be good for my skin once they've been on my bins. I've got a real problem with bins.
24:23Joel Dommett:Why? With my bins. Is it because no one's really concentrating on the bins because you've got a little baby? That's a lot. Well, also, we're putting our baby's excrement in the bin. And I think squirrels are loving it. And so squirrels have absolutely, they've bitten a hole through the bin. Through the bin to get to the excrement. And now it's a real problem. I can show you a video. In fact, you can cut it into this if you want to, of me taking the bin out. and then a squirrel jumping out of the bin and running out. Right? This is me taking the bin out.
24:57And I don't know where it's gone. So I'm like, where's it gone? Put the bin back. And it goes. And then I'm like, what was that? What was that? I heard something. Unbelievable.
25:11Joel Dommett:The squirrels are taking over. They are really taking over. They're taking over my house. And what I'm trying to say is snails and squirrels. So I don't trust them. It's a sort of half-truth, this. Snail mucin is a real skincare ingredient. You're absolutely right, because I think you knew that, didn't you? The idea that they could fill a shot glass seems a little excessive. You haven't seen the ones near my bins, man. So they could? Absolutely huge. So maybe you've become the optimistic snail farmer that can fill a shot glass with mucin. But, yeah, it's... Oof. I hate snails. I hate slugs so much.
25:48It's my thing that I hate.
25:49Joel Dommett:Joel, that was pretty good. Thank you. I think you got most of them. I got some. I think, though, if you do want positive affirmations while you're putting your skincare on, you should. Cheeks, you're doing great. Yeah. Eyes, loving your work. You're doing wonderful work. Eyebrows need work, but we can sort that. We can do that together. Yeah. Just a little positive affirmation. It might not actually scientifically make a difference, but emotionally? I think it's worth it. I think we should all talk to ourselves more often. I really do. Joel, it's lovely to have you back. It's lovely to be here.
26:22Joel Dommett:A little sort of reminisce over what's happened over the last few weeks since we were together with the Comedy and Cream.
