In short

A “Gentleman’s Journal” car-and-luxury episode covering car awards winners, recent car-market trends (especially Chinese brands and Tesla), and Formula 1; it also briefly touches on yachts and club sandwiches (mentioned but not detailed in the transcript).

Guests

Rory F.H. Smith (middle name “crucial” for SEO; writes about football) and Harry (co-host; discusses his own car purchases and test drives). No other named guests appear.

Key claims

Chinese brands are gaining UK market share; Jaycoo is “dominating” and resembles a Range Rover Evoque. Tesla is perceived as losing momentum as Elon Musk shifts focus. Morgan’s SuperSport won an innovation award for its lightweight wooden frame and daily-drive usability. The Porsche Turbo won “car of the year,” praised as an “all-rounder” that feels precisely engineered; e-turbos reduce lag. In the Grenadier debate, it’s not meant for city life; it’s built for off-roading, with improved steering on newer models. Rolls-Royce Spectre is positioned as a styling-led, fully electric flagship.

Notable examples

Jaycoo 7; Morgan SuperSport; Bentley Supersport; Porsche Turbo (Turbo S, e-turbo); INEOS Grenadier (including “black edition”/26 model steering update); Fiat 500 “Abarth”/“bath” hot version (electric version discussed); Volvo ES90; Rolls-Royce Spectre; Polestar 5; Formula 1 Williams resurgence (Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, James Vowles).

1:17Harry Jarman:Rory F.H. Smith. The F.H. is crucial. It is. Does it stand for something different every time? No, no, no. I wish it did stand for something more interesting, but there is another Rory Smith out there, and he writes about football. So I need to differentiate myself. Really? Yes. Again, I wish there was a more interesting story behind it. So he is just the Rory Smith? He's unfortunately my SEO nemesis, and he sort of is ranking higher than I am on the Google index if you just Google Rory Smith.

1:45Joe Bullmore:So if you hit the balance, you're just in more Gentleman's Journal bylines.

1:48Harry Jarman:Absolutely.

1:49Joe Bullmore:Absolutely. Okay. He's got a lot of bylines.

1:53Harry Jarman:Many years worth of bylines now.

1:55Joe Bullmore:I thought it could be Rory Ferrari Horsepower.

1:58Harry Jarman:That would be good. I mean, we can create it as that if you want, if it makes me sound better. But no, sadly, it's my middle names. Okay. Good. Yeah. Good.

2:09Rory FH Smith:Good.

2:09Harry Jarman:Which I won't disclose. No, fine.

2:11Joe Bullmore:Good to keep something close to the chest. Will you disclose some things about cars, though?

2:17Harry Jarman:Yes. We have a lot to talk about. It's been a busy...

2:22Rory FH Smith:we haven't done this we haven't we haven't done this for a year have we i hope we're not catching up on a whole no no we're not but the last time we were meant to do every we were meant to do every couple of months and we stopped we did one last year and anyway we're going to change this needs to be money it's a new it's a monthly thing monthly car talk yeah you could do weekly you could even do daily no it's not that much surely how many cars get released in a year 10 4.

2:47Harry Jarman:depends depends what you know the interesting ones it's probably uh only a few Chinese are releasing one

2:52Joe Bullmore:every week although I did see a headline this is how topical I get I did see a headline saying that there has been a slowdown in Chinese car sales byd is in trouble build your dreams it

3:03Harry Jarman:stands for it does what a brilliant are they slowing down tell us I I don't think they're slowing down I think the best-selling car uh recently was a Jaycoo 7 which you will no doubt I've seen thousands of things going on on that. Lots of lots of influencer activity going on there with a lot of the Chinese brands. But Jaycoo are one that have come to the UK and just completely bought market share and dominating at the moment. They look a lot like a Range Rover Evoque. They do. Yeah. Yeah.

3:30Joe Bullmore:And actually, isn't there one Jaycoo garage where on that roundabout as you come into Chiswick? Yes. It used to be a Porsche or Tesla. You're right.

3:38Harry Jarman:Tesla. It used to be Tesla. It used to be a classic dealership and then it became a Tesla. And now they've taken over from Tesla.

3:44Rory FH Smith:Is that a sign that Tesla's doing badly?

3:46Harry Jarman:Well, there is a lot of talk about Tesla not doing so well. I mean, partly I think Elon Musk has lost interest. He's sort of realized that at the end of the day, it's just a car company. And actually sending robots into space is probably more exciting. Not for us, not today. We love cars.

4:01Joe Bullmore:So what are the headlines then? What's going on in the car world? I stopped concentrating after the release of the Range Rover P38, the finest car ever.

4:09Harry Jarman:You need to disclose you have an interest in saying... I do.

4:13Rory FH Smith:The Range Rover P38. You bought quite a lot of cars last year, so you bought a Saab 900. Turbo, yeah. Turbo.

4:20Harry Jarman:Harry, that's crucial.

4:21Rory FH Smith:You cannot drop the turbo. Which, for the readers, it was actually in our summer shoot with Danny Dye. It was, and when I do come to sell it... That'll be in the headline.

4:31Joe Bullmore:And you've also bought a classic Range Rover. A Range Rover, not the classic Range Rover, the Range Rover P38, the second generation. which some would say is the most unreliable some would but i think it is a future class how many

4:42Harry Jarman:breakdowns we've had let's get to let's cut to the really important stuff if he doesn't start

4:46Joe Bullmore:is that a breakdown yeah the alternator went very early on since then touching all this wood which

4:52Harry Jarman:is what we were told not to do why don't you touch the wood inside your ranger over p30 a lot of it

4:56Joe Bullmore:polished walnut wood is it real yeah it's real oh my god it's sumptuous they don't make cars like that anymore. The final plug on that, it's a very rare 2002 Reg, Ranger Rupert 38. Not many of those, as you know. No. YGO2 is the plate. I'm not going to say the whole one. Yeah. And it's in Epsom Green with a coffee leather interior. It's called the Royal Edition. So tan on green. And it is green on tan. And it's the exact one that the Queen and some other members of the Royal Family

5:24Harry Jarman:Yeah, I was going to say, you're wading into some slightly interesting territory.

5:28Joe Bullmore:Yeah, the Queen and the more topical members of the Royal Family. drove. So it's a future classic. Is it actually theirs or is it, no? No, no, it's a Japanese import, which as Rory knows. Yeah, I'm a big fan of Japanese.

5:39Rory FH Smith:And also, they're very reliable. No salt on the road or something.

5:43Harry Jarman:No salt on the road, look at this guy. It's not so much into reliability, but it's the rust. So all these British cars, or all cars in general rust, because we, someone, a long time ago. I was thinking I had a Mercedes that was from a Japanese.

5:54Rory FH Smith:A G-Wagon? No, it was an S-Class of 1990.

5:59Harry Jarman:Yeah, nice.

6:00Rory FH Smith:yeah oxy ones you know yeah yeah yeah cool by the 80s when everything was going going well bulletproof one with the sort of wired hand anyway we're here we are we're sort of reminiscing like we got it's not a classic car show so could be we'll kick off car awards we did car awards yeah yeah we did we did the car awards together yeah at the end of last year um the highlights

6:22Harry Jarman:well the highlights i mean there were there were some some great cars some great categories in there the ones that really stood out for me and um you know i saw this when it first got revealed and and the designer pulled the covers off it was the morgan supersport which i think is a really inspired piece of design and this is a company that is based in the morven hills they still underneath all that body work is is a wooden frame so they still make their cars um in a very very why do they do that it's it's a historic link but also it's lightweight you know wood is it lightweight Well, this is the beauty of these cars is they're lightweight.

6:57Harry Jarman:And so many cars these days, they come to market, they are so heavy. Richard Hammond loves them, doesn't he? Yeah, real enthusiasts love them. But this car was designed to sort of sway more of the mass into Morgan. So up until now, it's been...

7:10Rory FH Smith:So how much is it then these masses can afford?

7:13Harry Jarman:It's over 100. So we're not talking mass mass. But, you know, they wanted to create a Morgan that was good for daily driving. so it doesn't leak, the wind doesn't sort of come in through there. They've all got these canvas roofs, but this one actually has a hard top. Okay. Where did you drive it? Well, it's around Malvern. Went up to the factory. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a very cool place and it's a beautiful part of the UK, actually, if you've seen it before. Yeah, Worcestershire.

7:43Joe Bullmore:So overlooked. Had a wedding. Very overlooked.

7:45Rory FH Smith:My thoughts, exactly. WT Postcode. WT Postcode, that's right. I always find the people who live there, they still say they live in Gloucestershire. Do they?

7:52Joe Bullmore:yeah on the border interesting some rivalry there yeah county talk let's do a bit um um

7:58Rory FH Smith:um so just why do you think this deserved to be in the car awards like what were the main thing

8:02Harry Jarman:well i gave the innovation award because i think it it it's a big departure it doesn't look it on the innovation award the wooden frame car you well the innovation yes and you know there's there's an interesting story in there because not many manufacturers are making lightweight cars anymore this thing is lightweight um it's also quite a departure from what morgan has done traditionally which has been to make cars they do still sort of look like they're from the 1930s which is when yeah um this even older than that i think morgan dates back to but the modern super sport is just got that edge to it that makes it look it just looks stunning in my eyes it could have also had the design award um yeah you know i wasn't uh is that is that like how long

8:42Rory FH Smith:ago did they release a car before that or is that like their so they well i mean is that going to last them now that's like a big push for this year that's their flagship so that's the that's the top

8:51Harry Jarman:of the range um morgan that they do the the others they are still um the i would assume they're gonna refresh those and still have those but they are a cheaper price point but the super sport's pretty

9:04Joe Bullmore:cool how much does it weigh that's a really good question how much does a car weigh like two tons

9:09Harry Jarman:Well, a lot of modern cars now are over two, especially SUVs, because most cars now are SUVs and they're easily over two. I mean, in a Rolls Royce, you're clocking on for nearly three. Wow. Electric, or Spectre, for example. You can feel it.

9:24Rory FH Smith:You can feel it. I drove a Culloden down to... A man of the people. No, no. That was a test drive. But they are big old beasts. They are big. And you just take a long time to get going.

9:36Harry Jarman:but they are big and they they alienate a lot of people but i actually kind of respect no i think

9:41Rory FH Smith:which is the the tensions detail is not but they were they in our car wars they weren't so let's

9:47Harry Jarman:know it's the other guy got runner-up actually did it on electric so then and then so what after innovation of all we what came after that well we had um the sports car award which went to the benley super sports which i haven't driven full disclosure it's it's coming later this year but But for me, that's quite a car that originally saved Bentley, really. Yeah, well, the Supersport is an old name within Bentley that they've brought back. But it's quite wild for Bentley. You know, for a long time, they've been down the line making very lovely. They've had mass cars again. Not mass. I don't think we're going to really touch on any mass cars in this podcast.

10:24Harry Jarman:But they've been making great cars, but they have been making ones that are quite sort of safe, I guess. You know, that they do a job brilliantly if you're in the market free. 200 ,000 pound Grand Tourer then that's pretty much where you're going to head to so you know Joe maybe sell the Range Rover in the Saab and you could you'll have a deposit

10:43Rory FH Smith:they seem like they're about to have a really good time Bentley I don't know I think so new CEO new CEO new marketing team like Greg Williams is somehow involved in it

10:54Joe Bullmore:so that's good

10:55Rory FH Smith:Greg needs a bit more no but they just seem like they're becoming like the videos on social media and stuff

11:02Harry Jarman:it's it's cool and that's what this car which should never yeah he was never no you know you wouldn't say it was cool well now you're saying now i think it's like yeah i completely agree

11:12Rory FH Smith:again not really yeah they're sort of and also they're celebrating the old cars as well yeah which i think is quite rare for a car brand yeah like they always look let's always talk about the

11:21Harry Jarman:new but actually well they reference the past but it's usually quite token whereas this this thing is quite wild and it's it's going to be a you know a hunkered down racer basically right rather than a soft grand tour which is what they've usually done um when you say wild what what makes a car wild to you what's interesting wild for bentley let's put it that way yeah i mean this this is like

11:41Rory FH Smith:is it competing against aston what do you want who's it going again yeah i i guess so i mean

11:47Harry Jarman:aston have gone hard down like the we make cars for drivers route whereas i think the super um the super support is probably still it's still a big car but it's it's definitely one for drivers i mean who knows we'll drive it and we'll we'll actually see where it places when's that it's due to come out later this year i think deliveries are meant to start after the summer okay so drives will be presumably before then yeah yeah fun um watch this space we'll try and get on that one

12:14Joe Bullmore:do you get invited to test drive almost every new sort of luxury and car yeah yeah do yeah and you

12:21Harry Jarman:take them up on most offers yeah when possible yeah yeah because you test drive a month oh well it's it's i mean as you said earlier on the podcast there's not that many of those cars

12:32Rory FH Smith:that come out so what about the other rory smith does he i don't know you'll have to ask him yeah

12:36Harry Jarman:maybe you meant to get him on this podcast you actually ended up with me talk about man city

12:42Joe Bullmore:um but but you you do many a year i'm just intrigued in the actual like mechanics of of how the car journalism world works well there's there's there's two ways of doing it you either

12:52Harry Jarman:go on a launch or you get one you know very kindly the manufacturers deliver them to your to your house okay so some you have to pick up some you do have to pick up some that don't from brands that we won't go and pick up we won't mention yeah when do you when when when do those benefits

13:06Joe Bullmore:sort of kick in uh because now i've been driving for you've just you've just got your i'm over a year now i can rent a car and well you just got your driving license well in october 2024 i mean

13:16Rory FH Smith:you got your driver license and you went and bought two classic cars yeah for all time it's

13:20Harry Jarman:quite bold isn't it yeah that was bold i appreciated it and a dog and a dog one yeah yeah exactly yeah good as well gosh we need if you have a range over you kind of need a dog right

13:30Rory FH Smith:exactly i mean it's a bit of it what is it it's uh it's she nancy nancy is what is a turbocharged 4.6 liter next a cavapoo a cavapoo and she's um very raindraver yeah yeah it is yeah but she's

13:48Joe Bullmore:got inner city range over yeah yeah okay guys she's uh she's sort of got a beautiful colorway she's an astonishing dog that really compliments the car.

13:56Rory FH Smith:The green on tan.

13:58Joe Bullmore:In fact, no, she's a perfect tan on black. So she matches the Saab 900. Okay. So you can only take her in one car.

14:06Rory FH Smith:Was that crucial?

14:07Joe Bullmore:Did you buy the car or the dog first? Within months of each other. Okay. I can't remember who came first, but it's just one of those things when the universe is just sort of aligned and you think, I'm on the right path.

14:17Harry Jarman:Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. When your dog matches your car, that's when everything aligned.

14:21Rory FH Smith:So what's the next? Right, back on to some more serious points.

14:24Harry Jarman:Next category, I think we probably need to talk about car of the year, right? Which is what we gave to a Porsche Turbo. And this, I've put a note here. I said Porsche Turbo is now more Swiss industrialists than City Boy Showboat. Because this is a cool car. There's a load of them in Switzerland as well. Of course there is. And for good reason, which I'll come on to. But when the Porsche Turbo first hit, it arrived in the middle of the oil crisis in the sort of end of the 70s, which was a bad time to launch a car that was quite heavy on fuel. It was almost immediately taken up by the sort of city boy traders who saw it as the ultimate accessory, the bonus car.

15:01Harry Jarman:These are the ones that had like the weighted bumpers. Well, they had the big rear wing, basically, and the side. Didn't they have a front weighted bumper to like keep it down or something?

15:10Rory FH Smith:I swear.

15:11Harry Jarman:They were named the Widowmaker because there was a lot of power and early turbo technology in the 80s wasn't great. so basically what you did is you put your foot down nothing really happened and then everything happened all at once and that was quite um hard for people to handle uh so i think a lot of casualties maybe i'm sure porsche won't disclose that and and the weight is towards the back that's such an obvious thing to say the engine is in the back right yeah yeah we're covering off the basics

15:39Joe Bullmore:yeah thanks for astonishing thanks for your input there yeah astonishing when you open up the front

15:43Rory FH Smith:of a porsche you what well yeah that's where you pay a little weekend yeah and it is only you can

15:49Harry Jarman:in you but they're bigger than you think it's bigger than you think yeah yeah it's actually

15:52Rory FH Smith:it's there so why do you why did you pick this car then well this was a car that i drove last

15:57Harry Jarman:year and um where do you drive it we drove it in uh malaga so uh this is a scary circuit it was a

16:05Rory FH Smith:press launch this was a full-on press launch you guys like really put it on it yeah yeah yeah we

16:09Harry Jarman:had we had uh you know professional drivers with us showing us the ropes and then we got to do a few laps ourselves around a scary track which is brilliant private owners club track which is beautiful and can you probably give it some proper oh yeah yeah you can go you can go all out i mean

16:24Rory FH Smith:you're with a professional driver who's teaching you how to properly well you are for the first

16:27Harry Jarman:bit and then they will lead you in a in a chase car basically and you follow them wow so yeah and you're in a line so there's maybe three cars in a line and you're all following so there's a wrong well there's a lot of room for error there wasn't anything that went wrong on my launch but yes things do go wrong and what was it like to drive on that track um ascari's amazing it is stunning it it it was made i can't remember back in the 2000s i think but it was it's almost as if you pieced all the most the best corners and the most beautiful thing scenery together you'd you'd get that uh it's a very cool place a lot of a lot of people that have nice cars keep their cars there and then they can just take them out for the weekend really just yeah yeah yeah it's it's a

17:07Joe Bullmore:nice one big luxury that is big luxury um so what was it like then what was that what was so amazing

17:12Harry Jarman:about this and and the reason i i said about the swiss industrialist side of things is that this porsche turbo i mean you go through the press briefing they're like this is the all-rounder this is the car that will do everything and you're like yeah okay yeah i get it uh then you get in it and you realize that that actually is the case and it but it's just so brilliant at sort of driving to a racetrack in in quite calm sedate way yeah and then you get it on the racetrack and it's just

17:37Rory FH Smith:i've started to like porsche i i didn't know but i didn't i didn't i mean i didn't like them before I just thought they were quite boring.

17:44Joe Bullmore:Nothing boring about it. No, no, but I did. The most beautiful cars.

17:47Rory FH Smith:I did, and then I was like, I just, I sort of thought, like, they had so many versions of, like, one car. But then... But that's the secret to the secret. No, but now I've gone in a few. I've just started to, and they do, they are, they are... No, but they are, no, with the, with the, not mine. But, you know, they do have very, like, different, different things. And I think, you know, the top of the range, you can tell a top of the range Porsche.

18:12Harry Jarman:Yeah. against a standard one well that's where they get you because when you're in and you start to have an interest then you start picking up on those tiny little references where they've made a model slightly different and that's where they get you and then you're into the porsche it's a black hole

18:25Rory FH Smith:and yeah are they still doing that's still doing well as a car brand uh yeah i think i think a lot

18:31Harry Jarman:of car manufacturers in general became slightly unstuck with their move to electrification and now things are sort of pinging back the other way porsche one of them because they committed very heavily did the same thing didn't they they were they were a bit more cautious they didn't commit quite so heavily on products like porsche did yeah um and now porsche so you don't buy an electric porsche do you you can you can there's a tycan or a can or a kind it seems a bit odd

18:56Rory FH Smith:it seems like a waste but mind you i've seen some of them and they they dry past you they're good

19:00Harry Jarman:they're very very fast yeah they're very you know they're do they make any noise at all no well Well, it's synthetic noise, but in the cabin, it's almost like you're in a spaceship. And so this is just the full fat turbo. Full fat turbo S. And turbo S. Yeah. And combien? I think they're weighing in a, well, you're looking at sort of 200. 200. 200 mark.

19:25Joe Bullmore:And when you say Swiss industrials, what do you mean by that? Why is that now?

19:29Harry Jarman:Because they're just so precisely engineered. and and for example this the new one has two e-turbos and and the e-turbo like i said with the widow maker back in the day you used to get a lot of lag and turbo lag maybe joe is something you you've even picked up on it yeah at some point um but e-turbos eradicate any kind of lag because what it does is you have a battery that spools up the turbo so it's already spinning yeah and then when you accelerate there's just no lag at all so what you essentially get is just a car that is absolutely rapid yeah um and it's i wouldn't say it needed two turbos but it's got two turbos which makes it incredibly fast fast accelerating but also they just feel like they're

20:09Rory FH Smith:also built like amazingly well exactly when you sit in them and like even you know like even the steering wheel buttons that yeah it's like so well it's crisp yeah it's just like yeah i mean it sounds a bit weird to sit there and just go yeah but everything all the buttons they feel like they're

20:23Harry Jarman:proper the kind of details that a swiss industrialist yeah okay so there we go do you see a lot of them

20:28Rory FH Smith:in stad uh i see a lot of them in stad why are we getting on stad because well they're four

20:34Harry Jarman:they're a four-wheel drive as well so actually they're quite good for all weather you see a lot

20:38Rory FH Smith:you see a lot in the alps and those in g-wagons basically yeah that's it the coolest look is when

20:43Harry Jarman:people bolt skis to the back you know you can get a suction do you think that's cool i saw putting a Christmas tree on.

20:49Rory FH Smith:Which Ferrari is the, like, the slightly estate Ferraris? Oh, the GTC4 Looser. No, no, I'm not, I'm talking before that. I'm talking,

20:59Joe Bullmore:FF. FF.

21:00Harry Jarman:Yeah. Yeah.

21:00Rory FH Smith:There's loads of those that people have started putting skis on. Yeah. And they're actually, I mean, they're expensive secondhand, but you can pick them up for like relatively. Yeah. I quite also like, old, old, old Bentleys as well. There's been quite a few of those.

21:13Harry Jarman:Oh, like Continental T, R. Yeah, just like, you know, I mean, I find,

21:16Rory FH Smith:chunky 90s i find that amazing that's when you're really wealthy when you're driving around a ski resort because the salt oh yeah and also how i often think how did you how do they get them there i think they just bought buy them there they buy them yeah they probably buy them there yeah and

21:30Joe Bullmore:just it's it's sort of like yeah they just look very cool the coolest car to have in a ski resort is a fiat panda okay with yes with the baskets onto the hand-woven baskets on top you need to

21:40Harry Jarman:caveat with the original original yeah yeah yeah they do some they also haven't seen those on

21:45Joe Bullmore:instagram at all have we well then it's not the coolest yeah the coolest car to have in this probably is a mercedes veto van yeah they charge you 150 pounds to go four minutes down the road yeah hello yeah hi you want to pay on card can we put it to the room

22:01Rory FH Smith:that's crazy that tried tried have we right so yeah back to back to cars what's next well the

22:09Harry Jarman:next thing i was going to talk about was in your grenadier actually because um they won the best adventure cars they did they won at christmas i had one at christmas i had one i had one at christmas

22:17Rory FH Smith:i had a bright red one i have a white one i still haven't one do they just give you the colors no i no i loved it i actually love it i got my head you had one that looked like christmas like it was

22:29Harry Jarman:santa's ranger it was incredibly festive yeah so what do you think of it because i'm i fall in love with mine yeah good i i mean it's it's a car that i've had previous experience with because i went go and drive it with Jim Ratcliffe yeah that was when it's last time we did this podcast yeah it

22:44Rory FH Smith:was wasn't it um back when it kind of first came out or it had been out a while by then you went

22:48Harry Jarman:to where did you go Tanzania yeah Okavango Delta um we went to Kruger National Park started in Kruger National Park and drove it um many miles in in the kind of environment that it's meant to be driven in I I wouldn't say and I don't think Ineos would say that this car is meant to be

23:02Rory FH Smith:driven in central London I think I'm going to come on to this because I'm getting like I I had you know when i drove mine just everyone's like oh that's such a bad car for london and i'm like it's not meant to be no it's not london exactly and actually like i think everyone tries to compare it because of the defender yeah uh comparison everyone compare it compares it to a new defender

23:23Harry Jarman:and i just don't think they're trying to do that it's not a fair comparison they they don't in to be fair to them in their marketing they don't even say this is it's not a city car it's not meant to be there it's it's sort of um you know fine to keep it there for a few days but living living with it was was fun i would say it makes you smile it makes everyone else smile and and actually when the going gets tough because i took it off-roading in salisbury plains which for those who don't know is like a military training ground for tanks basically so wow um yeah proper off-roading and uh it's it's really hard to find a car that's better off-roading than

23:59Rory FH Smith:that yeah well i think it's also the way it's been built it's just like you you know it's very mechanical quite hard to like you know it's a big step up yeah and actually car people like you're simon de burton yeah your car journalist nemesis uh was no but you know we were we were actually both on a press trip in saudi and we were just saying how like how great they are yeah they'll get you out of trouble i just think they've been built to do that job and yeah in switzerland where i was driving mine it was quite nice to have have that rather than have you know do you wagon because everyone has to do wagons they do so like it's a really like unusual car that i think there's two where i was driving around yeah and i think it's got a cool

24:37Harry Jarman:factor it does have a cool factor and it's that rarity factor that makes it cool as well and

24:41Rory FH Smith:they've yeah they've just bought out you just wrote about recently they just put out a black edition so what is because they've got rid of there was slightly the wobbly steering they said

24:50Harry Jarman:they yeah the biggest change that they've brought out on the well that's actually on the the new 26 model yeah so um for the for this year they've brought out a model with revised steering so the biggest bugbear for most people on inios grenadier was that it doesn't have self-centralizing steering so yeah which i quite like yeah but you it can catch you off guard especially when you're doing a lot of tight turns in london it's it's a lot of winding basically is what you're doing backwards and forwards so um the new steering ratio on on the new one is meant to help massively with that i haven't driven a 26 model year car yet but um they say that it's it's meant to make it a lot more a lot easier to drive on the road you have the pickup one or did you have a station no i had

25:29Rory FH Smith:a station wagon yeah yeah i haven't seen the pickups the pick a red pickup at christmas sign that would have been quite yeah i would have definitely been hired for a few yeah santa uh santa experiences can you um still uh slosh out the footwells the footwells have valves at

25:46Harry Jarman:the bottom so in case you get well i don't think i it's if you get in it it looks like you probably could hose it out but i don't think they would recommend you did that because there is electronics in it so okay i don't know on that i think someone showed me the other day they were like yeah i can

26:00Joe Bullmore:unscrew that and if on an inios yeah no i think they're pretty i mean that yeah they're pretty

26:04Harry Jarman:hard it's great though i don't know what any of those buttons do on the top i don't touch yeah it's one of those moments when you say in a podcast don't try this at home i don't i don't want to have a load of people writing into the gentleman's journal saying i hosed up my inos grenadier and how it doesn't work column um good all right so what's next uh next i've got have we reached or surpassed well i think we have so is that all the car awards then is that everything no there were more car awards okay you want to delve well no just go quickly what else one uh well i need to bring it up actually so so um just give me a second i think there was two like a couple more wasn't there yeah there was there was a fit 500 uh well not the fit of 500

26:42Rory FH Smith:the bath version of the 500 oh great this was for hot right right so the one category we had was i mean you can also pick up the old ones for nothing mr classic car man really yeah they're larry cars how old are you talking old no i'm not talking about i'm not talking about the ones for the engines out the back yeah but i'm talking about when they first relaunched oh like yes i think yeah i think they're great they are cool i agree and they're just like they're everything can Italian hot hatch should be there like Larry they are that was like Lapo Elkins like yeah genius really well he was he was the one who like I think Harley brought that back um and you know it also went back to Fiat's like original business model in the great days of Gianni Agnelli where they're just building a car that was cheap job um and that's what it did and then they go and take near bath and they're like let's put a yes big engine and see what happens exactly so um it's

27:38Harry Jarman:a shame they don't do a combustion version of that of that for our bath anymore because it's just electric the new it's just electric is it it's still fast i think the way things are heading i think they might go back go maybe put a combustion engine in our bath version which i think everyone would be would love but the electric one is fun i mean it's not but on paper it's not rapid it's it's not going to win any awards for performance but it's really nippy because it's got four corners one in each um sorry four wheels uh one in each corner it's very agile around town it's got this amazing sort of canvas roof that comes back so it's perfect to have in london it's perfect for london how much are they they're i think they're around 35 so same price as a golf base yeah yeah yeah it's not you know um if we are we is this a podcast of the people or not

28:24Rory FH Smith:I mean, I'm just wondering how much it is because you're like, you know, who do you see it against? And that would be like against the golf, really.

28:31Harry Jarman:Yeah, exactly. So that was that was one of them. We had another one. We had electric car, which was the Volvo ES90, which was drove again last year. But that's a very, very calm sort of Scandi chic take on a saloon, which not many people are doing saloons anymore. You know, everyone just goes straight for the SUV. Which Volvo's were famous for this. Volvo's were famous for I do love Volvo's

28:54Joe Bullmore:No, well I do love Volvo's The Volvo estate Yeah Did you not get one? You didn't ask on Volvo estate I did Yeah, I was That's coming next Because they announced They were no longer going to do the estate

29:05Rory FH Smith:They rode back on that now Have they?

29:06Joe Bullmore:How much of the classic estate? Not sure They must be going off

29:10Rory FH Smith:in value surely

29:11Joe Bullmore:Yeah Someone actually

29:13Harry Jarman:Facing seats Someone sent me an R which was I can't remember what year it was probably late early 2000s My uncle had like a sports one Yeah, the R estate yeah which was um which was an 850. um which i don't they're quite rare it looks like a brick and this one was red as well japanese import so joe this has got your name on it but um are you selling what are you doing you're doing parks james as we speak

29:38Rory FH Smith:selling the sarve i mean selling the dog wow no they're great like the xc71 which is like the

29:45Harry Jarman:four-wheel drive sporty newer one estate game you can do a 1994 green volvo estate with a roof rack

29:51Joe Bullmore:speaking to the microphone that's just under five grand so by the time i've got my hands on them great yeah four and a bit the next podcast in the back yeah they used to have the little child seats

30:03Harry Jarman:in the back yeah they're probably they're illegal now they're illegal mercedes also had the same it

30:08Rory FH Smith:was like a pop-up so you can you can you not drive if you have your kids can you not put your kids

30:13Harry Jarman:in the back now well you you can it's like if it's a classic car it's a built-in period well you get told off I don't think you'd necessarily get told off I think it's more like do you want to take that risk as a parent

30:22Joe Bullmore:well the joke the old joke was that if you've got enough kids to put two in the back of a Volvo estate you can afford to lose somehow that was the joke people used to say but that shows you the kind of person who don't have Volvo estate

30:32Harry Jarman:it was a different time period right we're talking about the 90s this is a daytime podcast

30:36Joe Bullmore:yeah yeah exactly

30:37Harry Jarman:right

30:39Joe Bullmore:hello and just a quick reminder about the Gentleman's Journal Clubhouse it's our membership package which unlocks a whole host of benefits across the world of Gentleman's Journal, including two magazine issues per year, full access to all our pay-all content, membership invites to exclusive events, and a weekly newsletter direct to your inbox. 31:04Harry Jarman:And then anything else? ES90. I'm trying to remember now what else we had on there, but I think we've pretty much covered most of it. What was the electric car? So that was the Volvo. We had the Volvo ES90, right about we had the rolls roys spectre which we can talk about that for a little bit because that's always quite fun i mean it did feel quite funny putting that as a runner-up because why um yeah we'll tell her what why is it called spectre uh spectre is nothing to do with james bond it's nothing to do with james bond i think it sounds quite cool spectre gosh i should have they've always done press release a little ghost names yeah exactly so there is a good there the ghost the ghost oh yeah literally ghost yeah ghost phantom spectre yeah yeah they just go out good i think it's one of the best sounding car names out there and what's what's what's what is different so so i

31:50Rory FH Smith:drove a black badge is the specter is that is based off a previous model no no no it's the one

31:56Harry Jarman:that was like driving a truck cullinan probably no it was two-seater uh specter no but before that

32:03Rory FH Smith:wraith wraith it's not a two-seater it's got two in the back if you wait did rafe have two oh dawn dawn the convert no even dawn that was full on yeah so so i mean a truck spectre kind of

32:16Harry Jarman:it kind of took over from wraith but they actually say that it didn't it kind of took over from um a car called the drophead coupe which was based on the phantom it was the most i was like excessive that was that was i would say monaco car that very monica that was very very monaco i mean this thing there was you saw a lot of gancher in proportions but essentially a two yeah and it had the teak on the back it's yeah i mean it's no it actually had teak and

32:41Rory FH Smith:yeah in my previous life uh my previous boss i had one and i had to clean the teak should we

32:47Harry Jarman:talk about him no how's he doing so uh anyway the spectre the spectre is the sort of successor to to the phantom drop head or the phantom fixed head coupe yeah um it's fully electric it was rolls-royce fully electric car when it well and still is their only electric car um it's really cool i think it looks as a styling exercise it looks cool really badass it's a very cool looking i feel like styling is good at the moment yeah brands across the board or you mean i just think

33:14Rory FH Smith:across the board i think like i feel like the last five years there was a lot of like well what's what are they doing and bland things i mean i'm not going to mention brands but there were some like what's happened and i feel like everyone is now like yeah i don't know i think people have

33:29Harry Jarman:had to step it up as as chinese manufacturers have just started like going but i don't i don't

33:34Rory FH Smith:think they're doing well i think the chinese are like they're just copying yes yeah i would say

33:39Joe Bullmore:which is why the european ones are going to lean back into that yeah design area but i would say

33:43Rory FH Smith:like you know like spectra yeah i think the new ferrari is like test rosa yeah do you not think why do you why is that controversial well i think i looked at it and i was a bit like oh wow it works from some angles which it's also like a cross between a testarossa and then a dino front

33:59Harry Jarman:yeah yeah i i on the whole if we're now sort of segwaying off into ferrari design language i think on the whole that ferrari i quite like their new modernist approach to design i think it's very different from anything else joe's just getting a picture of it yeah i mean just refresh my eyes yeah you see red and i don't different colors he's he's upset because you get advice from the

34:21Rory FH Smith:press oh fine that's why i wonder when i said ferrari horse they only had ultra press on it yeah by any lifestyle which seems a bit odd since most people are falling the 400 precisely my

34:33Harry Jarman:thoughts yeah yeah is that what you thought yeah yeah you have hair now ferrari yeah exactly but no you see that bit the styling's cool on that and then styling's cool i think the front end it's the same with um with their current crop of cars i mean manzoni who's their chief designer is apparently he doesn't like it's called mad zoni yeah it's such a ferrari cheaper designer name very um he apparently doesn't like faces on cars so he's that's why they've all got this sort of like quite they look a bit spaceshipy in the way that they're heading um interesting so uh expensive car there isn't it it is expensive i'm not actually up 400 and is it right it doesn't surprise me

35:10Rory FH Smith:it's 400 the spider is more expensive which always makes me laugh because surely they're getting less metal yeah well that's a very i just think it's obviously the one that everyone yeah was i mean that would that was how layman would think but obviously the spider is the one that i think

35:24Harry Jarman:there's more engineering work that goes into engineering a car without that critical bit

35:29Rory FH Smith:of architecture um but you know but i do think that's a good looking car i think specters yeah specters good at doing um what else is doing i think we we need at this point to say um a well

35:40Harry Jarman:done to the career manufacturers i think hondi is doing a fantastic job styling yeah i don't know

35:45Rory FH Smith:who the creative director are doing that. But again, I saw their 4x4 the other day. Yeah. And I just suddenly stopped.

35:53Harry Jarman:The Santa Fe or the EV9. The big one,

35:55Rory FH Smith:the big one.

35:56Harry Jarman:Yeah.

35:56Rory FH Smith:And I just went, actually, this is like cool. I thought their hatchback

35:59Harry Jarman:was really cool, which now you see. The iconic five. There's a few Ubers around in it.

36:03Rory FH Smith:But you know, like, I think for, like, they've done well. And like, and I think they've like set themselves like above. And they're not actually that,

36:12Harry Jarman:they're not cheap. No, they're not, they're not that cheap actually. When you look at them, I mean, most people buy cars on a monthly basis now and they sort of work out okay on that. Very reliable. They usually come with massive warranties. So, you know, credit to the Koreans. They've really nailed the car design side of things.

36:29Joe Bullmore:Nice boxy but futuristic. Yeah.

36:31Harry Jarman:The Polestar 5 is a good looking car. Polestar 5 is a very good looking car. Very good looking car.

36:36Rory FH Smith:Yes. That was also in our car awards. You've just joked on it. Yeah, that's good. That design award. That's not coming out until like later on in the year.

36:43Harry Jarman:Yeah, yeah. so that's like a that's like a bit of a super tour um it's going against like an s-class or not yeah it's a different cheap offering you know s-classes will do the hotel runs i can't see many pole star 5s doing hotel runs but i think a pole star 5 would appeal to someone who a like design like to drive their own car it's good looking isn't it very good looking car yeah very sharp styling uh around about a hundred thousand yeah i mean pretty much any new luxury

37:10Rory FH Smith:car on the market now i mean it is like a car just only a car is a luxury now like like no but it is like you know it is it's you know i mean it's amazing like you know you think a range rover was expensive 10 years ago and that used to be like 90. yeah i mean a range rover you know

37:25Harry Jarman:and then they sort of start around start start yeah really yeah yeah not your p38

37:34Joe Bullmore:way cooler if they break down it's still cheaper i could buy like many times over i'm gonna hold

37:39Harry Jarman:you to that yeah it's time you're way 38 on the side of the m40 well i just got yeah i just had

37:45Joe Bullmore:a really big bill for it did you i don't know what was that for was it the air was the air suspension airbags yeah no i've known it's it's on springs it's always been on springs okay well it's since i got it um but the good folks at rr london carlos and mike okay um hoping for a discount next time yeah it would be 30 off the bill if you really needed yeah um but basically i hadn't looked at

38:08Rory FH Smith:it since I bought it and how did you go to how did you go to this this this workshop do you just Google them yeah they're like the best for classic

38:15Joe Bullmore:radio okay cool see God you really are taking well I want to go you want to go to the best place and now it drives actually way better it is it is lovely it was a lot that was just slightly I like you're a year into what a year

38:26Harry Jarman:every year I mean he's really making up less and we're talking driving

38:29Joe Bullmore:impressions I like this yeah yeah I've only really driven two cars three if you count my driving instructor's car which I wasn't really allowed to open open up the taps on that for some reason what was it

38:39Rory FH Smith:that was actually surprisingly good no no no

38:44Joe Bullmore:Leon had a BMW M Series which was his car which he then fit with the spare things so actually really probably quite punchy actually but also compared to my cars like I don't know about modern cars it basically drove itself like you couldn't really jolt it from the road because it was like it's reassuring to know

39:01Harry Jarman:that the generation that are passing the test that doing it on autonomous cars.

39:05Rory FH Smith:You have to steer. Well, I said it had like the lane thing on. Pretty much. Which is really helpful.

39:09Harry Jarman:Helps you pass your test.

39:11Rory FH Smith:I did my test in Dorchester. Famous easy. No, it's not. Famous has the most roundabouts in the UK. Does it really? And roundabouts is very, very fair.

39:21Harry Jarman:Surely not more than Milton Keynes. Milton Keynes is like the roundabout capital. Really? You're very good at roundabouts, Harry.

39:27Rory FH Smith:Okay, right. Moving on. We digress. We digress. Right. What next? Well, I've got F1. on on here oh we've been doing a lot to talk about with this is this is getting really exciting yeah so i mean this is getting exciting in the fact that we've done lots of formula one drives recently most recently williams and you actually did the interview of carlos hines and alex well before that we did james yeah who for those who don't know and because because everyone does know because they'll be listening about cars and probably he comes from from pretty amazing stock in terms of racing braun yeah braun mercedes yeah um and then williams which is quite an odd and williams five years ago was on its legs yes yes and now it's turned around and it's looking like they're going to have a really really exciting they've got sponsorship yeah they've you know carlos signs which was you know yeah until big big time out of a seat yeah um but you know they're and also

40:24Harry Jarman:also Alex Albon I think is pretty impressive he is yeah he's he's he's soon to be as of the Miami Grand Prix this year will be the longest serving Williams driver in terms of race starts yeah which given they've had um you know Mansell uh Damon Hill Senna in in through their books that's that's

40:43Rory FH Smith:quite that's quite got a lot of pedigree that team doesn't it it's got a huge pedigree it would be amazing if they did like I mean it would be like it would be like a brawn story it would it would

40:52Harry Jarman:I mean, just for those who don't know the full Williams story, please do go and read those two articles because you will definitely know after that.

40:59Rory FH Smith:Well, they just each came, the cover came out this week, so they're our first digital cover of the year. It did.

41:03Joe Bullmore:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Brilliant cover that. But look, Blue is so good. It's very striking. Yeah, Williams. Yeah, it's very striking.

41:10Rory FH Smith:And I think we, you know, I think the cool thing about Formula 1, Drive to Survive is, as we're recording, is about to come out next week or something. Is it, yeah. But like, Formula 1 has just got amazingly interesting suddenly. It has. and it's becoming like a more level playing field and 5s 5s really helped.

41:27Harry Jarman:Let's see because this year's key because this is a new season, we've got new rules, new cars. Every so often F1 does a reset where they change the rules and then it can usually disrupt the running order. So what we've seen previously was we had Red Bull McLaren sort of being the dominant teams. That might not be the case as of this season.

41:46Rory FH Smith:Apparently Ferrari, like Lewis Hamilton had some good lap times. I haven't been keeping close eye on Ferrari. Well, there was a rumor that apparently he went really fast, which would be amazing. Yeah. Because that would be... Don't we all want him to do... I mean, personally speaking as a... I mean, that would make him the sort of goat, basically. I think he already kind of is. No, he is. But no, but I would say he is a goat, but up there would Senna. He needs aid.

42:09Harry Jarman:And that would be bugging him. I mean, he is already the goat, but that would be amazing. Because I think he wanted to go back to that team to win. Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely. I think deep down he's still chasing that eighth title. If he gets eight championship titles, then that's unheard of. No one's ever done that. Then you are christened goat for the forever.

42:26Rory FH Smith:So that's interesting. So there's lots. And then anything else in Formula 1 that's kind of interesting?

42:31Harry Jarman:Well, yeah, just a note on the Williams thing. So the team hit rock bottom and basically this is the resurgence. And this year will be key for them because James Valls come in and just sorted out the team, you know, come from a very experienced background. Mercedes sort of running order, that kind of thing. They've got money, as Harry said, now. They've got investment. They've got two good drivers. So, and speaking to both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, they both seem pretty optimistic that this could be the year that Williams gets a win. Maybe not a championship win. I think that's crazy. That would be.

43:02Rory FH Smith:I mean, the way they're going, it could happen next year.

43:05Harry Jarman:Yeah. You know what I mean?

43:06Rory FH Smith:Like, it's like they've done a pretty amazing. The fact they had podiums last year was coming.

43:11Harry Jarman:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, mad. Yeah. So we'll keep an eye on that one. I think there'll be an interesting one to watch. But like you said, Harry, yes, F1 has become a lot more interesting. It's a lot more slightly unpredictable. My mum is into F1 now. Yeah. So I'm just like... Nothing to do with the drivers.

43:26Rory FH Smith:No, but they watch like Drives to Survive and people just are into it.

43:30Harry Jarman:Yeah. It's suddenly hit. What used to be a fairly niche sport to be into has now just become mainstream. Yeah. And we've seen a lot of like creators and people writing or creating content about F1 as well, coming up through the ranks. so yes F1 is interesting we did a lot we've done a lot of F1 yeah we did Charles Leclerc Toto last year you did Toto Joe I did Toto sorry

43:55Joe Bullmore:Toto with Toto should have used that

43:57Harry Jarman:as the title

43:57Joe Bullmore:yeah

43:58Harry Jarman:he's a very nice man you didn't stand up next to him you were sitting down

44:01Joe Bullmore:for this one because he's quite a big guy he's a big guy he's very impressive he looks great

44:06Rory FH Smith:he's also a billionaire is he yeah that's been for a while no I know but no one really you see him as a team

44:14Harry Jarman:in principle but actually he's got a massive chunk of aston yes yes yeah and he's got a load of like

44:20Rory FH Smith:you know you're a proper businessman yeah he's he's impressive i mean and just very charming as

44:25Joe Bullmore:well yeah impressive operator really really nice all these guys have to be good operators because

44:29Harry Jarman:you can't they're not going out on a saturday night are they none of them are doing that anymore i mean actually talking to to um carlos signs and alex albon about what they'd just done in the off season alex albon uh i'm sure he won't mind me saying this because he said it in the interview but he just got engaged went to Bhutan and got engaged um brilliant for him Carlos Sainz went to go play golf in Mexico but then sort of cut his holiday short to get back to work these guys love it they just love working it's not the days of James Hunt no no the boys would

44:56Joe Bullmore:be great to have one of those back then god that would that's what the sport they wouldn't be in

44:59Harry Jarman:it though would they that's well I mean that would be that's why it was great yeah it came back and there was a wreck one of them sort of was late I mean who was the last one I would say the last The last one was Kimmy.

45:09Rory FH Smith:Yeah, well, Kimmy Ryker. I don't know how wild he was, but he definitely didn't finish it. He was pretty wild. I mean, he would drink, you know, some of the, yeah.

45:17Harry Jarman:Jensen Button was quite wild. Yeah, really?

45:19Rory FH Smith:Interesting. I think so. Careful. Good, good. Right. Right. Good. Okay. What are we going on to next? Well, we could wade, say, get it into yachts. Yeah, very well. Yeah, yeah. Into yachts. Well, because Rory is also writing lots about yachts. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, um should we start should we let's start with the the one the most recently of wally oh the wallywind yeah yeah i'm wallywind 110 bit of a mouthful very cool so this i think i actually know a bit more about it than you yeah go for you wrote the article um but wallywind is basically like there was a boat called wally b uh which first came out i think i might be wrong on this and i might please write in if i am but that um that was like the first like luxury it was a racing yacht but also could be a cruiser yeah and this is now taking it i personally think they are like one of the coolest yachts out there yeah yeah it looks like normally the people that have them they normally have like a very sexy speedboat right next door which might be a wally speedboat yeah or if you're really cool you have a magnum is that right yeah and the magnum is kind of yeah and that's if you're really cool uh but that's when i love there's a stretching the definition

46:29Harry Jarman:of cool yeah yeah that's it harry you're more into boats than you are cars really i think That's heritage.

46:34Joe Bullmore:That's just part.

46:36Harry Jarman:Living in the sunny...

46:37Rory FH Smith:No, I just think there's something really cool about them. And I think when you see a Wally or, you know, like, I mean, like a J-class yacht, which is a 1920s America's car. Stunning. And when you see one of those come in in the South France and say you're in Saint-Tropez and that comes in, forget having a super yacht. For sure. They're way cooler. The people, and everyone just stops. Everyone just goes, wow. And I think Wally is like that. you see them coming around the coast and you see their black sail and you see them rate and they're going fast they go yeah they're going they're going 17 yeah you know 17 to 20 knots and they're cool

47:13Harry Jarman:it's good and it's good and it's really selling the dream there's only two yeah there's only two

47:17Rory FH Smith:that have come out yet for wally yes so yeah wally and swan are like the wally and swan are the two

47:22Harry Jarman:sort of um uh top of the sailing yacht manufacturers i guess um but yes this wollywood thing is is beautiful i mean it's like they're very different motor yachts and sailing i've been doing a bit of digging into this yeah completely different ends of the spectrum and actually there's very little crossover i think between anyone that would have a motor yacht and a sailing yacht they're different two different buyers yeah after two different things but sailing yacht is is obviously the purest form of being out on the water um and as a result you have a completely different boat because you're you are more restricted on your what you can do as a layout um yeah you know you can't just go up on a motor yacht like it's also just like also it's like you know you have to

48:01Rory FH Smith:yeah you have to do some motor around like you don't really want to be motoring around in them and if you haven't motivated you just go go yeah and i think this yeah i don't know people more

48:12Harry Jarman:style so but it is the ultimate yeah sailing sailing into port is definitely the ultimate flex yeah yeah rather than just you know cruising in in your gym pad well that's the other thing

48:21Rory FH Smith:like when they come into the port and some of these are big boats yeah you know they turn into to win, sail goes down and they just walk into port.

48:28Harry Jarman:Yeah.

48:28Rory FH Smith:It's kind of, it's a pretty cool look. I always think back to the Thomas Crown Affair, second one with Piers Brosnan, you know, he writes off that sailing boat. Whoops. Yes.

48:38Joe Bullmore:Great film. It's a great film. That is a dream one day. You're sitting on the dock.

48:44Rory FH Smith:Yeah, I'm sitting way on the dock. Nowhere near, I'm in my oppie. I'm in my pico. Weight is good. I would love to do sailing again, actually, but I don't really have enough time because I'm too busy.

48:55Joe Bullmore:How are your sea legs? Are you good on the...

48:56Rory FH Smith:Oh, my God. I used to sail a lot. Yeah. But now I just don't have time.

49:00Harry Jarman:You can tell someone that sails a lot because they just... Just the way they talk with passion about sailing boats is someone who's coming from sailing boats.

49:07Rory FH Smith:I mean, like, why would you not want to go, like, close to the wind and going like that is great. I mean, we... I actually learned to sail near the Isle of Wight in the freezing cold water.

49:15Harry Jarman:Not as cold as the water I learned to. Where? West coast of Scotland I did a sailing course. Why out there? Yeah. I mean, it was my parents who decided to put me on a... God, they must really not like...

49:26Joe Bullmore:That is bad.

49:29Rory FH Smith:It was stunning, but absolutely... Yeah, it would have been stunning.

49:31Harry Jarman:I just spent the whole first day capsizing. So that ice therapy for you is like a walker in the park. Yeah, exactly.

49:37Rory FH Smith:So, sailing yachts onto boat yachts. Yeah. We're probably picking, so currently, the biggest yacht for sale.

49:43Harry Jarman:Yes. Or the most expensive. 325 million euros. Moonrise. So, Joe, might have to sell more than the Saab and the Range Rover. And there's two of them. Yeah. So what's the history of Moonrise? Mic drop.

49:55Joe Bullmore:Are these new builds? No, one is...

49:58Rory FH Smith:Well, they are pretty new. I mean, 2020. One is new, but he built the... So the guy who owns this boat is Yankoum. Yeah. Who found this app that... No one would have heard of it. No one would have heard of it. Called WhatsApp. Sold it. Built Moonrise, the first Moonrise, and at the same time, went to FedShip and said, build the second one. So I think... And I think the one's a tiny bit bigger. yeah I mean we're talking sort of you know they look pretty identical and then he has this yellow yellow helicopter I can't don't know if it's an Airbus or a helicopter do you know yeah no I think it might be an Airbus anyway like it's a bit of a flex he's had two for ages

50:39Joe Bullmore:why has he got two

50:40Rory FH Smith:well this is a big why not why

50:41Joe Bullmore:one in the Caribbean

50:43Rory FH Smith:and one on the men well that's that's kind of to be honest that does sound like a first world problem but that in terms of the cost it. I hate it when you've got to wait for it to come across. No, it's too easy.

50:54Harry Jarman:And actually, it costs quite a lot of money. Fuel, crew. Quite a lot of money.

51:00Rory FH Smith:Yeah.

51:00Harry Jarman:That's an understatement of the year.

51:02Rory FH Smith:You know, it's millions. It's millions. Some of these yachts, they spend £300 ,000 on flowers. So actually, for someone who... But I don't think that is. I think this is generally because he wanted to flex for a bit. he's now even billionaires, I don't know how much these were, but like even billionaires, he's now just put it on the market. Which is kind of weird because you again, you think if you have a yacht like that, you want to design it yourself. I personally would if I was going to like, but they take four, minimum four years to build. So actually, if you're Mr. Crypto guy, he's just made his first billion by listening to some guy at the pub tell you about a little tip and you suddenly have all this money, you don't want to wait and actually you want to go bang, I'm done.

51:52Rory FH Smith:So they have this premium and actually, this is the most craziest thing, some people make money out of doing this.

51:58Harry Jarman:Flipping. Like flipping houses, but flipping yachts.

52:01Rory FH Smith:Well, the famous one was, the famous person that made money out of boats was Eddie Jordan. Oh yeah.

52:07Joe Bullmore:Well, he used to do like,

52:08Rory FH Smith:because he was a wheeler dealer. Yeah, yeah. He used to have his deal with Sunseeker where he would say, I'll take the first one, but he'd give me a really amazing deal and I'll promote it to all my wealthy friends. So he would then sell it on as a premium because he would have the first one. Very clever. He was the only, normally boats are known as money pits. Right. A bit like a Range Rover at Lulzal. Huge money pits, yeah. And, you know, but... We're lining you up, Joe. Yeah. But yeah, Moonrise is now for sale. So anyone... It is. How much is it?

52:39Harry Jarman:325 million.

52:40Rory FH Smith:321 million. 325. And the running cost would be... 10%. Yeah, 10%. 10 % a year?

52:46Harry Jarman:Yeah. Yeah, that's what they estimate.

52:48Rory FH Smith:So, yeah, you know, small fry really. And I feel like we've just gone through a massive rush of boats now and I think it's now like chilling out a little bit. Yeah.

52:57Harry Jarman:We had Kismet. Kismet, Breakthrough was another big one that came to market. Which has now just been sold. Yeah. Bill Gates has sold it. Sold it. Yeah. He didn't really have it very long.

53:09Rory FH Smith:I don't think he stepped on it.

53:10Harry Jarman:No, I don't.

53:11Rory FH Smith:Yeah, well, I think he got divorced. And I'm not saying he needed to sell it because of his divorce. yeah but i think i think it i don't know changes going through changes that was hydrogen powered as well yeah it is so it's um hence the breakthrough it's a good look like a bird bought a yacht two

53:26Joe Bullmore:years zuckerberg has a yacht i believe it was we used to own to an oligarch who got sanctioned before he could buy it really no poor guy that's probably true i think so and that's why there's a

53:38Harry Jarman:lot of actually got it out of steel there's a few bargains to be had in the sanctioned

53:42Rory FH Smith:They're all in Turkey in Montenegro.

53:45Harry Jarman:Yeah. I'm not sure how much you want to be taking one of those on in case the owner suddenly decides he wants it back.

53:52Rory FH Smith:I don't know. Yeah, that's kind of true, actually. But the, and then, yeah, Bezos. They're all these tech guys. Bezos has a saving yacht. Does he? Called Koru. Yes, stunning. and yeah it also has it he has a separate uh boat i can't remember the name of it but just carries

54:13Harry Jarman:the toys helicopters wow that's that you that was a trend a while back and it's sort of still going

54:18Joe Bullmore:yeah and that's again like they follow you around ultimate chase boat just sort of but it's a big

54:23Harry Jarman:chase boat that carries anything from like submarines to helicopters to okay well you see all your stuff you don't want to have to cluttering up your course your deck space i mean do you think

54:32Rory FH Smith:yeah would you say I mean having a boat is definitely more luxurious than having a private jet isn't it

54:38Joe Bullmore:yeah private jets everyone again

54:41Harry Jarman:podcasts are the people

54:42Joe Bullmore:I mean a private jet is not such a money pit they're not literally eroding every single day

54:49Rory FH Smith:I guess they're like functional as well

54:51Joe Bullmore:they're functional but you can't chill you don't go on holiday on a jet it's just transport isn't it

54:54Harry Jarman:yeah

54:55Joe Bullmore:I think a lot of people probably go on holiday on a jet

54:56Harry Jarman:but I know what you mean you're not on the jet it's not the destination whereas the yacht is the destination and the transport.

55:02Joe Bullmore:Yeah, agreed. But it makes a lot of sense, guys. It does. It makes sense. Doesn't Jeff Bezos, final thing on him, doesn't the yacht he owns, the mast head, literally the mast head, is it the mast head?

55:13Rory FH Smith:No, it's,

55:13Joe Bullmore:you're thinking of the right, the front.

55:16Harry Jarman:Kismet.

55:17Rory FH Smith:No, no, no. But you know in the old naval shifts, they have women at the front.

55:20Harry Jarman:Yes.

55:21Rory FH Smith:It's of his wife. It's a molding of her.

55:23Harry Jarman:Awful. And it's quite old.

55:24Rory FH Smith:Rather big something, but I, you know, I won't go. Yeah. But it is actually, it's her on the front. Lauren Sanchez. and it and it's and it's carved out of wood for kismet has something similar but it's a jaguar the jacksonville jaguars yeah the owner which is the jackson yeah and kismet not so long ago appeared

55:40Harry Jarman:uh there has been three kismets i'll i'll have you know the other kids are eric smith yes it did the old kismet which now got renamed can't remember what it got renamed sold to eric smith the new kismet seo which yeah which came uh a few years ago probably a couple of years ago was moored on the thames yeah again about last year um because he came to a uh jacksonville jaguars match oh yeah and thought he would park it next to our bridge yeah that was there was a party on

56:08Rory FH Smith:it somebody invited me to that party and you turned it down i was i was it's a bit like you at the rugby when you bring the range over for the gates of the gate down do you does it have a gate

56:19Joe Bullmore:does the gate work of course it does you sit on it it's beautiful i bet i bet it i bet it's jammed

56:24Rory FH Smith:a few times never jam I bet it has it's for sale he's probably lost the whole clicking noise it's just like

56:30Joe Bullmore:yeah that's the best bit about it that's really why I wanted it it folds down

56:33Rory FH Smith:split tailgate it's always

56:34Joe Bullmore:so cool

56:35Harry Jarman:yeah

56:36Rory FH Smith:the new ones the new ones do you have it do the new ones have a split tailgate

56:41Harry Jarman:a few cars I mean I've got a BMW X7 temporarily which has a split tailgate which you know Range Rover inspired I guess but not that the Germans would want to admit that but it's a very decent Range Rover rival what's the BMW X7 like it's a Range Rover rival really is the clearest way to describe it it's very big luxurious seven seater which does it have the really big thing at the front it yes but it kind of because it's bigger I'm not sure about you mean the kidney grills yeah the kidney grills it's a bit yeah

57:08Rory FH Smith:is that what they call kidney grill yes that says that says a lot yeah there we go there we go in

57:18Harry Jarman:my middle names with that.

57:20Rory FH Smith:Good. So what have we, let's, what have we got coming up? What's like, what is 2006?

57:26Joe Bullmore:Well, 2006. What is 2006?

57:30Rory FH Smith:I'm not talking about politics. I'm just talking about car world. 2026. What are you really excited about this year? Well,

57:36Harry Jarman:what I'm really excited about and it's happening quite soon is the Aston Martin Valhalla is coming to market. I mean, I've already seen some pictures of, I think, customer cars already been delivered. To who? To Lawrence? troll i'm sorry probably i mean how much are they uh again not but millions so up on price it's million no no no no they're not really no they're not um but this i thought this was like a baguette no it's not valkyrie oh okay valkyrie was there was there like bonkers adrian newey designed um

58:05Rory FH Smith:hyping car well he's now also designed a red bull one which yeah which about we yeah we've sort of

58:10Harry Jarman:skipped over that topic but we can go back to it how much is that uh again you're really quizzing on the price of that.

58:17Joe Bullmore:Rui doesn't ask the price. Okay. Just takes it.

58:20Rory FH Smith:Just add it. Done. I don't want to know the price. Yeah. So Valhalla is, okay. Valhalla is a mid-engined Aston Martin. So this is a... So it's going to be amazing handling.

58:31Harry Jarman:It should be. Should be. Yeah, yeah, yeah. When are you testing it? In a few weeks, actually.

58:36Rory FH Smith:Oh, so it could go in the next issue.

58:38Harry Jarman:Yeah. There we go.

58:39Rory FH Smith:There we go. Perfect.

58:41Harry Jarman:So that is going to be very exciting. That's a big car for them, because it's sort of territory they've not really been into. I mean, Valkyrie, which again is that hyper car, was slightly niche and probably only a few of them, you know, a bit of a halo product for the brand. Whereas Valhalla is a bit more of a, you know, this is a car that people will drive on the road as well as a track. It's, I guess, going head to head with some of the top, top Ferrari supercars.

59:08Rory FH Smith:I really hope it does well. I've got a big love for Aston at the moment.

59:11Harry Jarman:Yeah, I do. I feel like they're making great cars.

59:13Rory FH Smith:I feel like the styling's amazing. And I feel like it deserves to be up there with Ari in terms of profitability and success. I agree. I mean, it's famously being one of those cut, just constantly being sold and sold and sold. Stroll, he's a bit of a beast of a businessman. And he's obviously been very successful. And he's done very well with the Formula One team. He's made a lot of money out of that. But Aston just never seems to quite make it. And I will say, like, I think you and I agree on this. Like, the quality is just insane. The product has never been better.

59:49Harry Jarman:The product's never been better. I mean, I'm sort of talking, what, 10, 12 years worth of driving.

59:53Rory FH Smith:They deserve to win.

59:55Harry Jarman:Yeah, they do.

59:56Rory FH Smith:No, no, but they do. I mean, it's like a lot of, I think there's a lot of, like, yeah, a lot of.

1:00:00Harry Jarman:They're great cars. They really are great cars. One of my. One of my. He's done all the styling on it. Yeah. They look brilliant. Handling as well. Handling.

1:00:07Rory FH Smith:And the Brits deserve to take on the. Yeah.

1:00:09Harry Jarman:It's that sort of. God's sake.

1:00:11Rory FH Smith:Yeah.

1:00:11Harry Jarman:those Ferraris you know they need to chill out a little bit well Ferrari might have met its match

1:00:16Rory FH Smith:I think you know I think they actually I days of we just need Bond to get a move on and release

1:00:21Joe Bullmore:that next film and very true I mean I'm talking about is that right going on digital cover star Callum Turner yeah he was yeah I know we had a very cursory but Pleasant Callum uh Zoom call in 2024 and now I mean he's his stock's just rocketed but he is now odds-on favorite by

1:00:39Rory FH Smith:I think he would be good. Is he?

1:00:41Joe Bullmore:I've not been keeping up with this. I like him a lot. I didn't know he was. He's a very good actor. Okay. I think they should have gone for someone completely unknown anyway. We're not doing a Bond episode. Yeah.

1:00:51Rory FH Smith:And it's not decided yet either.

1:00:53Joe Bullmore:It's all interlinked. Yeah, the car will be. It's all interlinked. But it is interlinked.

1:00:55Rory FH Smith:We're talking both cars. I think, you know, actually, like, it's a big part of Aston, isn't it? So, you know, that and.

1:01:02Harry Jarman:Will they maintain it with, you know, it's under new ownership now, right? I'm sure that the Eon who. Well, that's when you'll see Faith,

1:01:11Rory FH Smith:which is Strolls, you're parking up next to Coru

1:01:12Harry Jarman:and having a little discussion.

1:01:14Rory FH Smith:Yeah, yeah, exactly.

1:01:15Harry Jarman:Definitely.

1:01:16Rory FH Smith:As billionaires do one-on-one.

1:01:18Harry Jarman:Disgusting the ins and outs. But no, a parting note on Aston Martin. They were also in our car awards as the, I think, performance SUV of the year with the DBX. I mean, that car's ridiculous. Yeah.

1:01:29Rory FH Smith:I mean, that car, there's no reason to buy one. There is, that car is nuts. As someone, and let's not leave Joe this conversation it's a dbx and they're just ridiculous they are i mean they are very fun it's it's like a four by four and i think it is is it the fastest no uh it used well it used to be the most powerful and then ferrari brought up the pura sangue yeah i just think that car's nuts yeah i

1:01:53Harry Jarman:mean and how much are these oh again here we go what he's saying i need an encyclopedic knowledge of every every car i mean yeah well you're looking around 100 170 i think honestly if you buy a 2022 22 dbx 29 000 miles but we're not going if we're going to second-hand territory then we could be looking at anything okay yeah it's like um guide why are you going a new one 2025 i want whatever 2025 is too many they're cool cars they're really cool i was actually in our car was you lost it

1:02:21Rory FH Smith:left out a lot of car was that but anyway don't worry well we can yeah and now you need to work on your last one because when's the motor shows well good question they're not really doing motor

1:02:30Harry Jarman:shows even exist anymore really because that would be when all the releases come out and i think now people just release stuff as they go do you know what's become the the sort of de facto mocho now is goodwood actually you know goodwood festival of speed and having the ability to drive a car up up the hill at goodwood has become a lot more attractive for car manufacturers than to have it sat in a trade show uh hall yeah and it's just i don't know about that beautiful surroundings

1:02:55Rory FH Smith:and you can see it moving a dinner there yeah yeah yeah harmon chill with we haven't done

1:03:01Joe Bullmore:David Ptolemy.

1:03:03Rory FH Smith:We haven't done a dinner there for a while, but yeah, we will.

1:03:05Harry Jarman:Yeah, do one. I mean, Goodwood's always a big landmark. And actually Car Week as well in Monterey. If we're talking sort of... That's ridiculous. The landmark car events of the year now are like Car Week. When the Americans come and they just make everything look better. Have you been? It's absolutely insane.

1:03:19Rory FH Smith:No, I just, but you know, you do realise, I tell you what, actually, you know, as well, like, you know, the ice and things now. Yes. These things, which I think the ice is like, it's obviously this year was like peak ice and a lot of people walking around the lake and sam it's your second home uh and you're fitting well though he basically just he seems to review the hotels there every year uh and i don't i i really just don't know how much you can write about a hotel again i mean ski room if yeah yeah i was gonna say there's not that many new hotels no but honestly he just retakes the same four and then there'll be a little article that comes on the general's journal oh best club oh the club yes i see that i did so retta actually reposted

1:03:59Joe Bullmore:that saying we go to the best club sandwich of the world well there we go and then and then i dm them being like yes sweet like yeah yeah you know and when they make an amendment to their

1:04:08Harry Jarman:club sandwich you have to go out and test that again i have to do yeah yeah exactly yeah i get

1:04:12Rory FH Smith:right on that and that crucial bit of journalism investigate we started on cars and we've ended on club sandwiches cars well anyway thank you no problem always a pleasure looking for we're not to leave it till next year i think we'll have another what do you reckon may yeah uh there

1:04:29Harry Jarman:should be a fair bit to talk about you would have driven up valhalla by then also summertime will be

1:04:35Rory FH Smith:coming around and that's been awesome boats i think we need to do some more speed boats we haven't done any speed boats yeah speed boats let's carry on have a look on that and by that time you would have bought a volvo estate volvo estate maybe a speedboat how much are those yeah
