In short
Rachel Daly returns to Daily Brightness after time off for a rough period (mental switch-off and recovery from injury/concussion/suspension history). They discuss the FA Cup’s “magic,” Chelsea’s path to another semi-final, other cup results (Brighton vs Arsenal, Charlton vs Liverpool), and England call-ups. They also cover gadgets/DIY (media wall with remote-controlled fire; Rachel’s DIY extension and desire for an electric potato peeler), plus “block and delete,” gratitude, and “typical Brits” TV-remote frustration.
Guests
Rachel Daly (34, Harrogate) and Millie Bright (Chelsea; co-host). No other guests appear.
Key claims
FA Cup is the best trophy to lift and Wembley is “insane.” Villa’s substitute-to-starter impact and her goal were decisive. Brighton are unpredictable but deserved their win; Liverpool need a “second gear.” England should include younger players like Eric and Meg Parkinson’s surprise call-up.
Notable examples
Villa’s rocket of a finish vs Tottenham; Madison Haley’s Brighton goal; Charlton’s 18-year-old extra-time winner; Leeds’ comeback to reach pens vs Chelsea (then Chelsea vs City/Birmingham semi-final talk).

1:32Rach:Hello, everyone. Welcome back to Daily Brightness. As you can see, my bestie is back. This makes me very happy. I know you guys have all been asking where she is. She's here. She's fine. We're fine. But it's so lovely to have you back, bestie. How are you? How have you been? It's good to be back. I feel like I've forgotten how to speak on a podcast, so it's nice to get back into it. But yeah, no. Start with your name, your age, where you come from. My name is Rachel Daly. I'm 34 years old and I come from Harrogate. Yeah, it's been a tough old ride. I've obviously needed some time off away from everything that I obviously don't want to discuss and go into details as to why.
2:11But yeah, like you said, I think everyone just sometimes needs a mental switch off. And it's been a rough ride, but I'm here. I'm back. I am training again I am absolutely exhausted I'm in basically a mini pre-season mode right now so and for me I've not been injured ever so for being out like I've only ever missed a game over like concussion or suspension it's never been like a long period of time so yeah trying to like you know doing 150s and 300s when you've been out for three months is quite tough on the body to say the least literally Saturday I got beasted I got home and just fell asleep to the whole afternoon like I'm hurting in muscles and places I didn't know existed my feet you know like the soles of your feet like your arches oh my god I'm getting walking up the stairs honestly but I'm back
3:00Rach:I'm good I'm ready to go honestly I think just Ben mentioned it actually on the last episode and he was just saying that how proud he is of us both because we practice what we preach and I said on the last step that we all need a break sometimes. And also I think another important point is we also, as players, I think sometimes the outside world expect us to disclose everything and let you in on every part of our lives, but we don't actually need to. And I think that's something that needs to be respected from the outside, looking in. Sometimes, I don't know, I feel a sense of pressure that I have to say everything or explain where I am or what I've been doing or why I've had a break.
3:42Rach:And yeah, I think we've both been in that space. I mean, we both know each other inside and out, but I am really proud of you as well just for taking a break and you needed it. And like you said, injury is very, very tough. And it can be really lonely at times. And I think returning is also hard. I find it hard coming back into a team environment when I've been out. Obviously there was days, like you know why, but there was days where I wasn't even in the training ground. so I like missed a lot of you know like the team banter and just being around the girls in and around the changing rooms so coming back in was like a bit like oh a bit overwhelming because you know I've been like isolated for so long and then you just come back and it's like right straight back into it but it's nice the girls have been amazing and yeah the club are super supportive and yeah I'm just I'm glad to be back now I feel like I needed to like you know hit the ground running and I've definitely done that hit the ground and run so Jesus, doing straight back into 300s after that length of time off, I think I would actually die.
4:41Literally, I can't keep my eyes open when I get home. No! Honestly, I'm so tired all the time. Well, it's nice to see you with your boots back on. How are you anyway?
4:50Rach:I'm good best it. Yeah, injury is long and hard and it's annoying and there's good days and hard days. And yeah, I think my biggest thing at the minute is feeling like a huge disconnect to the team. I think that's the hardest thing. I feel really disconnected. But yeah, just honestly grafting away day by day and just remembering to take care of my head as much as my body. But I've got a question I've been dying to ask. Have you been doing any DIY? I have. I'm going to talk about it a bit on the gadget part, but my extension is nearly done. So I'm just waiting for the plaster to dry. And we're looking at it right now, waiting for the plaster to dry.
5:31the floor's getting laid tomorrow sofa's arriving on Wednesday so it's all coming together now I mean I yeah I'll tell you what I did because it's part of my gadget one but I'll save it for that
5:43Rach:okay don't tell us too much too soon but yeah we can't wait I know the fans are just as eager as I am but shall we get into some footy yeah let's do it so FA Cup this is probably one of my favourite competitions to play in obviously good not to be involved at the minute but the FA Cup is so special. I don't think people understand. For me, it's the best trophy that you can lift. And getting that opportunity to play at Wembley is like insane. I think as well, it's like, it's so old English traditional football, isn't it? Like, wait.
6:20Down and out. Bless you. I told you, I've just woke up with a cold. I don't know where it's come from. I was joking today saying I'm going to have to pull a sickie tomorrow because I know I've got 300 and I've actually got a cold now. that's karma isn't it no you're actually ill yeah but i actually i think the fa cup is such a special like tournament i think because of its deep rooted history but your game today was a good one and literally i mean i was it was bitty like as i was watching it because i was coming back from yeah and whatnot but what about the goal from bourbon that is like a true striker's finish that
6:53Rach:honestly honestly it left a foot the game itself was like a proper fa cup game she honestly i must say I've got to give a shout out to Villa because she went from not really being involved being in the stands and then obviously we've had a numerous amount of injuries and then she got us came on a sub then she got a starting position and honestly I think over the previous couple months I think she's been one of our best players I think that's just a true reflection of like patience and hard work and you know like it's not easy to get into a Chelsea team at the best of times so she's come in and taken her opportunity and I mean she's been really good for you I agree but that goal was a hell of a finish she has that was incredible so shout out to my little Vela I'm really proud of her I think like you said just perseverance and just being patient and being able to play centre back left back just doing whatever Sonia needs her to do basically and then that finish today I was Oh my God.
7:52Rach:But honestly, the game itself, I think, was a perfect FA Cup game. Honestly, for me, it could have gone either way. I think Tottenham had a really good game. I think they had some huge chances that they didn't take. I've heard really good things. I was catching up with Micah. It was nice to see her, but obviously she couldn't play because she's on loan. And she was just loving life. She just said she loves it. It's so good, coaching and stuff like that. and I think even that side of it, see the teammate go out alone and like just grow into their own. Just keep developing really. Like she's young, she needs minutes, she needs to play and she's been outstanding for Tottenham.
8:27Rach:But yeah, I think they're a top, top team and honestly, like I said, the game, it could have gone either way. I said watching the game, I was like, it can be one of the games whoever takes the chances because it was literally like ping pong. They're like, they attack, we attack, they attack and they were on top for like chunks of the game as well and then we'd get a chance And yeah, it was a really, really good game. But thank God Villa came on and absolutely rocketed that into the roof of the net. So Chelsea are through to another semi-final. We're through. Talking of other good goals, Madison Hayley's goal for Brighton yesterday was the joke.
9:01Did you see it? Ridiculous. Honestly, I was like... Brighton was so good, you know. Brighton are so strange to me. And I feel like this has been quite a few years of this. it's like they are amazing and you think they're going to have such a high finish and then they dip off a little bit you don't know what you're going to get with them I think they're very unpredictable but they did really well yesterday I thought they were on top from minute one I think it was a really really slow start from Arsenal but they did what they set out to do and it was a great win for them
9:34Rach:Yeah, massive, I completely agree I think they're too inconsistent and I think when they're good, they're really good they've got a lot of attacking threats I think it's so good for them having Fran back on the pitch. She makes them tick. But they had so many chances. Kankovic, long-range shot. I was thinking, oh, my God. I think they took advantage of a tired Arsenal team. Yeah, I mean, obviously, coming up the back of your game, it's difficult to do. Yeah, I mean, I thought Brighton were top draw yesterday. So I think they completely deserve to win that game. Yeah, and I'm not taking it away from Brighton.
10:08Rach:I think whether you're tired or not, I thought Brighton were outstanding and fully deserved the win. but it's the magic of the FA Cup that's what happens yeah and then talking about the magic of the FA Cup Charlton Liverpool because an 18 year old scores an extra time like that's the FA Cup innit that's like what dreams are made of crazy but I actually watched that game well part of it and Charlton are doing really well in the championship so it was quite an interesting watch I was a bit surprised though I didn't think it would have taken Liverpool that long to score they had a few chances I thought they'd have yeah yeah but again coming back from an ACL injury 18 years old scoring the winner in extra time in the FA Cup taking it to the semi-final I love shit like that like that's what the magic of the FA Cup so sick 100 % that's like they'll see it now as written in the stars to go on and do you know what I mean you get little moments like that they're unforgettable we need to see a second gear from Liverpool against Brighton if they want to go to the final because yeah I think Brighton if they play like they did 100 % yesterday is this the first time that either of them had made the final has Liverpool made the final correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe this is Brighton's opportunity of making history I don't think they've ever made a final which for them is incredible and like you said they've found their flow and I think pulling off a performance like that against a top top team will give them nothing but confidence and Liverpool's last chance last time sorry final was early 90s so even in the times that we've been playing neither of them have been in a final so that's a huge opportunity for them but also I think it's brilliant for the women's game to see new teams making the final.
11:51Absolutely agree.
11:52Rach:I think it's something different so it's going to be exciting but I agree I think Liverpool have definitely got to step it up if they want to get that place in the final against Brighton because they are, with what I've seen, they're looking very very strong. And then obviously it will be Chelsea v Man City or Birmingham probably Chelsea Man City since it always is that game somewhere along the lines shot it's always Chelsea City in the semi-final always so let's see if we can see Birmingham do it you never know you know an upset but talking of upsets over to your boys Leeds absolutely smashing it out no I was beside myself yesterday right comfortably 2-0 up comfortably 10 minutes to go 2-2 I was like why why how have you done that So for me, I was like, we're going to lose this game.
12:40Like you've chucked two goals away in the last 10 minutes, we're going to lose and it's typical Leeds. I'm like, no, get us to Wembley. But then penalties and I was like, oh, I was nervous for Pens. I can't lie, but it's a good way to watch them go through. So that'll be exciting against Chelsea as well. I know.
12:57Rach:Oh, who will I be cheering for? Leeds. I'm out of my Leeds shirt on. Kidding. I'm kidding. I need a half and half shirt, me. Half Leeds, half Chelsea, both very close to my heart. But there was more upset because Arsenal men got knocked out as well, didn't they? They did. Magic of the cup all round. You're right. Right, we're going to take a quick break. We will be back very soon.
13:23Hello and welcome back to the second part of Daily Brightness. With the international break beginning, surprise call-up for Eric and Meg Parkinson. We thought it'd be nice to talk a little bit about her and call-ups and debuts. So I'm not going to lie. And I think because of my age and I'm probably old enough to be her mother, I didn't really know anything about her. So I had to give a little bit of research because, you know, when you see the squads come out and I was like, Parkinson? I was thinking, have they spelt Pattinson? Yeah. I was like, surely not. So I obviously had to do a bit of research.
13:51I spoke to some of the girls at Villa as well who have played with her. And I think she sounds like a really, really bright talent, but I think it's such a rare one to Serena to do something like that. So I think that was probably the biggest shock. But yeah, I mean, I'm all for younger players coming through and getting their opportunity. And, you know, hopefully she gets some experience and being around the older lot, the senior players and what it's like to be on camp. And yeah, I think it's going to be a nice, I hope she, I hope to see her play. I think she's, by all accounts, a very good little player.
14:20Rach:Yeah, I would definitely agree. I'm definitely not going to sit here and say I knew everything about her because I didn't. But I think from what I've heard, she's a very young, bright, energetic player. and I think that's also what we need in the squad, I think, to keep developing, keep going to the next level. I think these sorts of things need to happen and they shouldn't be such a shock. And I think, like you said, the biggest shock is that Serena's brought someone new in at such a young age because it is a little bit rare. It doesn't seem like we've done that for so long. And I think we've also had the same group for so many years that it does come as a surprise.
14:55Rach:but I do think we are getting to that stage where change is happening, the team's evolving, like youngsters need to be in that squad and if they've got the talent and they're ready for it, I do believe that they need to come into the squad and things like that need to happen more because, listen, we all have to stop playing at some point and the kids are coming through thick and fast and, yeah, I think a little revamp, I don't think it hurts the team. I think, if anything, it develops the squad and it pushes people on. I think every position there needs to be competition and I don't think anyone should have anyone should just no role is given I agree I think we need to see the youth and it's exciting when you can see the youth come in and they get minutes I think there's no better opportunity than now as well to drip feed them into the squad I think her story is really cool as well like born in Singapore she plays in Portugal started for her first team at 15 like yeah cool story man like I live for stuff like this so I hope she has a great camp and you know she'll be made to feel really welcome and all the girls will look after her so yeah I hope she has a good camp and gets the experience that she wants from the first time and goes on to have an amazing England career yeah we're rooting for you so hopefully it's um it's a good one and like I said she gets some some minutes and some experience and yeah I think if anything it's just going to be a massive positive but honestly if we could give you any little bit of advice enjoy yourself soak up every single moment because it is the best years of of your life but talking of call-ups I think we should tell the fans a little bit about ours yeah I can't even remember mine so hold me up I know yeah seriously um I was in America actually I was at uni and it was a complete shock like completely out the blue but I don't like remember like where I was or like I think it was an email back then weren't it yeah and i had a couple of camps and then i was out for a little bit i remember getting a phone call and then i got a phone call from phil for my first camp with phil i was on standby for the she believes and then i got called in um so that's probably the most recent one like that's that's the one i remember more than the one with mark yeah what did you because obviously when i was with 23s you know like sometimes you get called in to do like a couple training sessions i remember i got called in and there were there were one other player i can't think who it were and we went over to training obviously 23's had training then they'd be like oh Millie such and such like you're training with first team today I remember I had a couple literally a couple sessions like that and then Mark rang me and all I remember was I was at the stables and it was just me and I was like at first I was like who's this number like what the hell I don't remember like what I said or how I reacted because I don't think I really took it in I was just like what is going off this is not this weren't in my plan I weren't meant to I I weren't meant to, like so many people have said you'd never make it at England because I started late.
17:49Rach:I only came in at 19s for a little bit and then straight to 23s. So I had like a little bit of a different journey. So I was like, this is not meant to happen. This was not in Millie's script at all. So then when it hit me, I was like, what the fuck? What's going on? But yeah, I was just, yeah, it was just honestly amazing. And that's when Millie and Rach became besties. Well, yeah, because obviously I was in all of Mark's squads up until the Euros. and then I didn't get picked for the Euros. And then I thought, I think that's over now. Like I think that I don't think I'll get called back in again.
18:21And then obviously that was the summer. And then I think by the Christmas, Mo had rang me and I was going with them with the 23s. So that's kind of like always a weird space, isn't it? When you've been with the seniors and then you go down to the 23s. I think that was the way around. Yeah. And then Phil, I think I joined him with some of the first team sessions. That was in La Manga. and then Phil had called me off standby for that in his first camp, which was, she believes, and then, yeah, made some memories there, didn't we, Bestie?
18:50Rach:The rest is history. Yeah, I was top goal scorer for own goals because I kept getting ball-whacked at me. Memories all right. Oh, never let him get that one down. That session went, I just remember, no, I know, La Manga, those fricking stares every time to meal. Oh, my God, so annoying. Took you about half an hour to go up to dinner. They were awful And the hell On the way back From training And that session We did When we had that 3015 test In snow When it was snowing Randomly In the manga We were like What the hell 3015 I hate that I prefer that Over 1k time trial No but it's over So fast that Awful I know But I just don't like Any testing To be honest Bestie No me either I can't stand it K-pop demon hunters Haja Boys breakfast meal And Huntrix meal Have just dropped At McDonald's They're calling this a battle for the fans.
19:41Rach:What do you say to that, Rumi? It's not a battle. So glad the Saja boys could take breakfast and give our meal the rest of the day. It is an honor to share. No, it's our honor. It is our larger honor. No, really. Stop. You can really feel the respect in this battle. Pick a meal to pick a side. Hey, participating McDonald's wants supplies last. You tell yourself, no one wants your college-era band tees. But on Depop, people are searching for exactly what you've got. You once paid a small fortune for them at merch stands. Now, a teenager who calls them vintage will offer that same small fortune back.
20:19Sell them easily on Depop. Just snap a few photos and we'll take care of the rest. Who knew your questionable music taste would be a money-making machine? Your style can make you cash. Start selling on Depop, where taste recognizes taste.
20:34Rach:Tomorrow morning is knocking. Stock your fridge now. How about a creamy mocha frappuccino drink? Or a sweet vanilla? Smooth caramel, maybe. Or a white chocolate mocha. Whichever you choose, delicious coffee awaits. Find Starbucks frappuccino drinks wherever you buy your groceries. Right, moving on. First up, we've got Inspector Gadget. Do you have a gadget for us? You did mention something with your DIY. Yeah, but do you know what I wish I did have? And I actually need to look at this because I bet there's one out there. An electric potato peeler or something like that, right? I was slicing potatoes yesterday.
21:05Look at me thinking. So sore. I sliced a whole chunk of skin off my finger. So I'm actually going to look on to see if I can get one of them. I can't stand peeling potatoes. It slices. One slip and you... But yeah, my mum came round for a roast yesterday and I was peeling potatoes and I'm like, why? Why have I sliced my finger open on the last bloody potato? Anyway, yes, let's talk about our gadgets. Right, but do you actually have a gadget? Yeah, so basically it's not really a gadget, but this goes back to my DOI. so we built our media wall and it looks sick I showed you a picture didn't I?
21:38Rach:Yeah you sent me a picture actually like oh my god It looks sick so I'm so gassed about that but the fire has got like a remote and all like all different flames and like all different heat settings and I just love it I play with it all the time Sarah's like boiling in here Oh my god Might have got fire on again
21:56Rach:Might have got fire on So that's the it's not really a gadget but that's the closest thing I've got to on recently but hopefully next week I'll be coming on and telling you I've got an electric potato peeler. Well, with the looks of it, it looks like you've got a big enough water bottle there. I've got a water bottle. 1.8 litres. Oh. Sick. Is there anything that you want? Yeah, there is actually. I want a remote control for lights so you don't have to get out of bed constantly. Yeah, you can get them, but I think it's quite expensive. I want to be in bed and just have a little... Do you know what else I want?
22:25I want in my extension speakers built into the wall. You know when you're outside in the garden having a party and put speakers on in the wall
22:33Rach:like I don't want to have to faff about charging my charger and charging my speaker and where's the speaker gone where's the phone gone no battery oh god's sake anyway yeah I hear ya I hear ya I just want easy life that's what I want easy life right we'll come back to you next week with more gadgets we will actually have some I'm going to do a little bit of shopping actually They might go on TikTok shop, see what's available. They've got good ones. See what's available. Surely they've got an electric potato peeler. I'm going to find you one, Bestie. I'll send you a link. Right, block and delete.
23:09Rach:My absolute favourite. Oh, God, I've missed you so much doing these. I've started a notes, Bestie. I've got loads. I should do that, really, because I forget them. I think about it in my time. I'm like, oh, yeah, that's good for block and delete. And then it gets to it. I'm like, what am I annoyed about? No, do it on your notes. I've started doing it. I've started writing my gratitude and block and delete on my notes. but let's start with the audience first this is from claire when the supermarket moves everything around and you have to relearn where baked beans live agree i completely agree claire i agree claire i agree i don't like when things change and i hate that about big supermarkets you go in for a little 15 minute shop and it turns into 50 minutes because you don't know where anything soddy lives anymore well i had this problem today right we're having a barbecue we're having a barbecue and i went to Sainsbury's and I got all the stuff for the barbecue I can't find the coleslaw why couldn't find it so I couldn't get any Jess has said the feeling when you walk into a room and instantly forget why oh you're speaking my language Jess because not only that but forgetting what you're gonna say like I have literally like I've walked into rooms recently I'm just like oh yeah why did I come in here don't know and yeah I was gonna say something completely forgot and then it annoys the life out of me when i've forgotten what i was gonna say so i agree i can't bear i hate that that that is that is the biggest the biggest annoyance ever when you're like you go to say something you got like how's it just gone and then it'll come back to three days later when it's irrelevant it's our brains best it's how it's adhd brain it's what we work like unfortunately winds me off the clock i tell you that i can remember the most use useless bit of information that I'm never ever going to need, but I can remember it.
24:52See, I can't even do that. I feel like as I'm getting older, my ability to retain information is really difficult. Honestly, I'm losing the plot.

25:02Rach:I've lost it. What do you mean losing it? Mine's gone. It's gone, Mum. If found, please return.
25:11Rach:What is your block and delete for this week? What are you carrying roots off? Right. I've got two things, right? one is yeah doms hate them why do we get them like why am i so so why can't i tie my shoelaces in the morning hate it like my session was three days ago why can't i still can't feel my muscles what's happened best it best it it's because we're getting old i know well i don't like it so i want to block and delete dom and the second one is quite sad but i want to block and delete how far away my mum lives from me because she came over yesterday and as soon as she left I was like oh she lives so far away like I wish she was closer so I could see my mum oh don't say that I'll cry yeah it was sad I miss home life so much I miss being able to just like pop in have a cup of tea that's exactly what it is and it's like I like my mum comes over and it's like it's probably an hour too far to like consistently come down you know and we had such a nice time and like talked about even nonsense stuff, but it was just like it was with my mum and Jim, and it was just really nice.
26:21Yeah, just chit-chat. Yeah, and she ended up going home, and then I ended up FaceTiming for like an hour and a half. So it was like, yeah, I just, I wish it was a bit closer. But anyway, what's yours?
26:31Rach:Right, mine, I've got quite a few, and I've just been having a look at which one's best to do, but technology not working. Like, for example, TV mode. I love technology, but I hate it when it fails. And then why, I'm sorry, but it shouldn't be failing this day and age when you've got AI and all this other shit going off. Like, it should work. It should be perfect. But why do we do this? This is the remote, right? This pen's the remote. When the remote don't work, why do we go like this TV? I do that. It's like, just shut the batteries about. Be all right. Why do we take it back off and wriggle the batteries as if it's going to be working?
27:08Rach:And I'm like, fucking work. honestly why do we should do stuff like that in the podcast like what stupid things brits do let's do that let's let's actually add that we're gonna add another section in guys to anyone listening so we've got inspector gadget block and delete gratitude and now we're having typical brits it's so funny because as soon as you said that like pointing at the telly i literally i'm like not working and then you get even closer to tv like it's going to work finding that red dot like that press the button harder yeah yeah you're literally going fucking work right i agree with that that's a good one that's that was bang on we've definitely got to bring that typical brits yeah or brits abroad they're the best ones love them you just change you're going to a completely a different person don't you think you just get to resort and you'll go english english english you can just tell you can you can tell an english person abroad a hundred fucking percent immediately i'm like yeah english english oh can go and have a conversation with them easy peasy so funny right what are you grateful for this week i am grateful i don't know it's been a bit of a rough patch lately bestie do you know what i'm grateful for my family family and friends i I think they forever get me through any shit moment.
28:31Rach:And, yeah, it's been a bit rough lately, I must admit. And, yeah, they just get me through. They keep giving me a reason to smile. I love that. No matter how bad things get, they keep making me smile. So it's just the simple things for me. I'm an easy pleaser, super simple. Like I say, I don't need big flash fancy things like just family being there and friends being there. and yeah I think putting a smile on my face when times are hard I think that's yeah that's the best thing anyone could ever do for me that's exactly the same as mine for this week I know I say this a lot and you say it a lot and it's obviously a recurring theme but I think when times are hard like I've obviously gone through a really tough time in my life recently and the people and they know who they are who have supported me through that on days when arguably couldn't even get out of bed I am beyond grateful for them because it's been I feel like when you when you go through like a trauma or something sad or a hard time in your life those people really step up and like it's black and white then there's no there's no gray area it's they're your people so i'm beyond grateful for them and they know who they are and if you're questioning it then it's probably not you for that vesti if there's any doubt in your mind it's not you darling so sit down shut up and move on no I'm kidding we love you to bits though I love you to bits I'm super grateful to have you back on the pod I feel like I'm myself again I know I've needed I've needed this this literally has been my definitely been therapy yeah you always say that but I've had a giggle today so this has been good hope everyone listening has had a giggle with us oh yeah there's loads more to come honestly the best parts are yet to come but listen thank you so much for listening hope you've enjoyed Daily Bright has been back together we're back laughing and smiling which is what we want not just for ourselves but for all of you lot as well.
