In short
The episode discusses fallout from Liverpool’s 4-2 loss and Mo Salah’s social media outburst aimed at manager Arne Slot, plus what it signals for Liverpool’s identity, leadership, and Slot’s job security. Wayne Rooney and John Gibbons (Anfield Rap) debate whether Salah is vindicating himself after a poor season and whether Slot should be backed by the club.
Key claims
Salah’s “heavy metal football” dig is a public disrespect; it undermines unity that Jürgen Klopp built; Salah and Van Dijk were leaders early but leadership has faltered; Liverpool’s style has shifted to a mid-block, making Anfield feel less hostile. Notable examples include Wayne Rooney’s own omission by Alex Ferguson from a final home match, and comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo’s second Man United exit.
Guests
Wayne Rooney (former Man United/England captain, pundit) and John Gibbons (Anfield Rap creator). Also mentioned: Xabi Alonso appointed Chelsea manager.

You can't publicly disrespect him twice the way he has and get away with it. He's done well enough to get the job. Now the challenge starts for him and I'm behind him. I hope he does really well.
00Chelsea are probably in a better position to what Man Utd were at the start of this season. If they get the signings right in the summer, then I actually think they could be up there challenging for the league. Wayne, you've seen a lot of live football this weekend, haven't you? Yeah, FA Cup for Anil Saturday. It was always great to go to the cup final and it wasn't the best of games, to be honest. It was hard to try and find positives from a performance, but City probably were the better team, deserved to win, so congratulations to them. And then Everton today, a game, wasn't the best game. Everton were poor today, so Sunderland deserved to win.
38But let's talk about one of the other big stories from the weekend, Wayne. Liverpool lost on Friday night, 4-2, pretty damaging in terms of they wanted to get the Champions League qualification done but it's actually the fallout since which has generated the most headlines I think have you seen Mo Salah's comments and his social media post yeah I have and I find it sad at the end of what he's done for Liverpool and what he's achieved at Liverpool and I've been open this season on my thoughts on Salah and Van Dijk as well and I think for the two of them and I've been two of the best players in the Premier League in World Football over recent years and I just think for Salah to come out and aim another dig at Arnie Slott, listen whether Arnie Slott's there next season or not, it's not the point for him to come out and aim another dig at him I think it's really disappointing and yeah I've seen his teammates have liked it and stuff and sometimes your teammates like your post without even knowing what it is I think I've seen that happen before and for him to come out and have another target I just think he's talking about he wants to play heavy metal football so he's basically saying he wants Jürgen Klopp football now I don't think most Salah can cope with that type of football anymore.
04I think his legs have gone. Not fully gone, but I think to play at a high tempo and high intensity now, I think it's very difficult for him. And even doing the defensive work, right? Yeah, well, he's never really done that. So I don't think you can say that, but I don't think he's ever really done that. So for him to weigh him another dig when he's announced he was leaving a while back, which I didn't agree with, so I think it's just sad if I was Annie Slott I'd have him nowhere near the stadium really? in the last game I think to have a second dig at him and I get everything he's done for us but I had it with Alex Ferguson I had a disagreement and fallout with Alex Ferguson and at Alex Ferguson's last game at Old Stafford he left me out of the squad for that reason now whether I thought he was wrong he probably thinks he was right from that point at the end of the day he's the manager and I think Arnie Slott is the manager of Liverpool and he's almost just dropped a grenade and said he doesn't trust and believe in Arnie Slott and almost thrown his teammates who are going to be there next season and let them have to deal with that as well and put them into a position and I just think it's sad and the stats don't lie I called out early on the season I'll go on to Van Dijk as well, where Van Dijk come over to me all with a smirk after the Real Madrid game, as if I was wrong.
38But I weren't wrong in what I was saying. I feel I've been backed up by that this season. The pool can see more goals this season, I think, than they ever have in the Premier League. And unfortunately, time catches earlier. I think more so Mo Salah. And the hardest thing to do is accept that. And now what Mo Salah is probably going to do is end up in Sadio somewhere. and I'm seout of Korea and earn a lot of money for that. But I just think that as a player, you need to look at yourself and I feel he hasn't accepted that maybe he's not the player he once was and he's looking elsewhere and he's looking to blame other people and I just think it's not nice as if because he's been one of the best players and he will go down as one of the best players in the Premier League history, in my opinion.
27we're actually joined now by John Gibbons from the Anfield Rap and you may have seen that he did a very passionate speech which has kind of gone viral beyond Liverpool fans as well John just sum up how you're feeling right now having seen not only what happened on Friday night but also what Mo Salah said and also what Wayne said just then yeah it's it's it's a tricky time really at the club and you can see there's problems there and you know not just the the results or not just the the league position you know which isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things you know you can you can you know you're not going to win the league every year you can you can fall away and we we should qualify for the Champions League next season and so you think well you know dust yourself off and go again but I think the issue is that fans are feeling at the moment or suspecting that there's something a little bit deeper wrong.
21And you mentioned before my accidental viral moment and I was talking a lot about identity there and that's what Mo Salah is talking about here as well, really is talking about how should Liverpool play and how should Liverpool play as, and not just the style of football, but his point on any team can win one week, but you have to win week after week. And I think for us as supporters, I think we're just a little bit concerned that, you know, the manager maybe just doesn't suit the club and the people who, you know, are in the city really and what they want to see. And then maybe the new players who are coming in, you know, aren't of the mindset, you know, they've got plenty of talent, but aren't necessarily of the mindset of the ones who they're replacing.
13and then so when Mo Salah comes out with this I think a lot of fans initially were like seeing it as vindication for what they've been saying really and we'd say Mo Salah agrees with us Mo Salah saying it we're not just making it up we're not just you know cranks or going mad or whatever like it's coming from the dressing room and so I think for supporters and listen supporters are divided you know there's some people who are very much in Wayne's position in his camp and saying you know looking at maybe his own performances and how much he's putting in this season, as should all the players, not just him, by the way.
49But obviously he's the one who sort of come out and said it. And also, is this really the way he wants to leave? But there's others who believe that, you know, because he loves the club and because he wants what's best for the club, he's speaking out and he's saying, listen, you've got no idea, you know, how kind of bad it is. And so it is a real divide. You don't want to be divided. The thing I miss most about the Jürgen days is actually the unity. You know, you can talk about heavy metal football and you can talk about the way we used to play. And listen, it was brilliant, but Liverpool haven't always played like that.
16You know, it wasn't like that under Rafford, it wasn't like that under Hulé, but we had some great seasons and they were, you know, great Liverpool managers to a certain, you know, level. And I think what I miss is the unity, really. And what Jürgen was great at was bringing everyone together and getting everyone, you know, united on the same page. And it feels like at the moment, we're a million miles away from that and whether Mo Salah is shining a light on that or whether he's making it even worse. So does the blame lie with Slott or with Salah in this situation? Well, I don't... I mean, that's the question really.
58Is Mo Salah shining a light on the problems or is Mo Salah being honest with the supporters and saying, listen, this is a lot more serious than what people think? Or is he making it worse? is he pouring petrol on the fire, if you like, or is he just having one last dig before he goes? And different fans are saying different things. No one's all in complete agreements on this, and this is the problem, and it just feels very toxic at the moment throughout the club, not just this situation, but in lots of different ways, really, and it doesn't feel like anyone's leading. It doesn't feel like that anyone...
34That's a big word in terms of leading, and is Mo Salah being honest with himself? I think that's a question only he can answer. But in terms of, you said he loves the club and he's got a voice, he has got a voice. So I think he can have these issues inside the club. And in terms of the unity, I think a lot of the unity, of course, Klopp was a big part of that. And I know there's some players who didn't like Klopp. I know that for a fact. Well, I don't think Mo Salah did by the end. No, but I know they'd run for him, work for him. And when you talk about leadership, and that's the one thing I questioned both with Mo Salah and Van Dijk early on this season, is when you're to be a leader, you see him with Steven Gerrard, he brought unity, everyone ran, everyone worked.
19And if they didn't, I think we've seen him with LHU, if they end up leaving the club. And we've seen it with Jordan Henderson in a different way, I think, alongside James Miller, alongside Mandy Robertson, I think was a big voice in that as well. And now, when you talk about leadership, for Salah to come out and do that, we can all see there's issues there. I think everyone from the outside can see that, whether you're a Liverpool fan or not. I think Salah's just trying to vindicate himself and make himself feel better because he's had a very poor season. And that's what I was saying before. It's sad because everything he's done, I love watching Salah play.
03but I think I can only speak for myself I have to be honest in my opinions I think there's been a real leadership this season and when when you're when you're saying about players coming into the club who haven't really bought into it yeah that comes from them senior players that comes from your Van Dykes that comes from your Salahs your Alisons they have to be the example to them players who come into the club and you know pass the torch down to them and then when them players are coming into the club and they're seeing Mo Salah behaving like he's behaving, we've seen that before he went to the African Cup of Nations and now they're seeing it again now, it's very difficult for them to do that because they feel like they're overstepping, if they think something's different, they're overstepping them leaders at the club, so I think he's been very selfish in what he's done in the two occasions and he knows what he's doing, he's not stupid and he knows exactly what he's doing and I think it's a shame and fans will be on the side but I think when you look deeper into it and haven't been in a dressing room in a similar situation to that as well Mo Salah knows exactly what he's doing and we've seen a little something a little bit similar with Ronaldo when he left Man United the second time they know what they're doing it's an attack it's an attack on Arnie Slott and again I've questioned Arnie Slott as well this season but that's your manager you can't publicly disrespect him twice the way he has and get away with it and that's where as I said before if I was Arnie Slott I'd have to pull rank and just say listen you're not anywhere near the place on Saturday whether you like it or not he's had the last six weeks to have his parade and to disrespect the manager like that This is where I feel the club have to back Arnaz Slotten.
54Now, if they're going to back him, they have to back him with that decision, I feel. I doubt that he's going to do it. I really doubt he will do it, but I think he should. You're saying don't let him say goodbye to the fans and just let him... John, how would that go down? Yeah, it'd be a huge call because I think that the fans... He's in a tough position with the supporters at the moment. I think it is fair to say Arnaz Slotten. And, you know, I think the majority want to replace him. I think, you know, this news that Xabi Alonso has just gone to Chelsea or is going to Chelsea, you know, hasn't gone down brilliantly.
32I think he was probably top of the list of people who could potentially replace him. And so in a week where that's happened and with everything that's been discussed around Arnazlott at the moment, I think if he completely left Salah out, then I think there will be uproar and rightly or wrongly. I wonder whether there'll be sort of a halfway in between where they'll give him 10 minutes at the end. I don't know. And then maybe you're making your point that way, but you're giving him your moment. Maybe they'll do that. Yeah, I think he will do that with a bit of sense. But that's where I'm saying, obviously Alex Ferguson had the full power at Man United, didn't he?
08And he'd done that with me. Whatever. But I just think, if I was in Alex Slott's position, I think you've got to then go he's got to be having discussions with the board and the owners saying listen this is twice now and if I'm going to be the manager here next season if I'm not going to be tell me but if I'm going to be the manager you just need to back me on whatever decision he makes because you can't have a player coming out like that because when Mo Salah goes and he's wherever he is next season sat there saying oh I still love Liverpool whatever all them other players now when it gets a little bit tough they'll be thinking the same thing thinking oh we'll just have an attack at the manager and nothing gets done about it so there has to be some sort of example set I think but Wayne is it just Salah that you reprimand though in that situation given that like a lot of the other players liked his posts and sort of showed yeah no listen you can like posts and whatever but you know at the end of the day Salah or his team whoever's put it up the that's that's the main thing people like posting whatever whatever they they want to do but I don't think it looks great for Arnie Slott anyway either way but it didn't have to be that way in terms of to have an attack on the man he won the Premier League last season he won the Premier League for Liverpool last season and people say it was Jürgen Klopp's team Klopp didn't win it the year before with them and I heard him speak the other day and I think he's he's right and he has got a case in terms of the injuries that Liverpool have had and I've seen the stats I think it was 52 Premier League goals scored the most they've ever conceded in the Premier League now that's not great with the money they've spent so if I was a Liverpool player in this situation having won the league last season and not being great and especially for the leaders who haven't you know been great all season I think the best thing is to keep your mouth shut Wayne how would you feel as one of Mo Salah's teammates because you've just said there obviously it feels like at Manchester United you wouldn't have liked it?
14I think he puts them in a position and that's my whole point he's putting his teammates in a position where they have liked the post that's down to them whether they do or not but he puts because if he's got close friends in there you know it puts them in a position to the back Mo Salah you know and I think there's players in there who can't wait for Mo Salah to leave the club if I'm being honest I think probably Yvert and Eketike because I think a lot's being made of Mo Salah this season he hasn't been good enough but then He'd come back from the African Cup of Nations and he played a lot of games where he probably shouldn't have played and that's on reputation.
53It's probably similar when I left Man United, players were waiting for me to leave. That's why when I retired from England, I didn't want to be there and have younger players look and think, he's here because of his reputation. I felt there were better players for my position. That's why I retired. So, yeah, listen, I just think it's a shame because watching Mo Salah over the years, even though he's playing for Liverpool, you appreciate good players. And he's been a world-class player and set the standards in the Premier League for many years. And I just think he's let himself down with this one.
29Does this feel like the writing's on the wall for Arnie Slott? Maybe, John, do you think? No, not necessarily. Listen, I think the owners at Liverpool, I think, have been pretty successful at blanking out the noise and doing what they think is best. You know, all the talk is, you know, there's a coach who's just left Feyenoord. You know, he's coming in. They haven't obviously engaged with Alonso at all. You know, he's gone to Chelsea now. And so I think if there was any chance that he was going in the summer, I think there will. I don't think Alonso will be going to Chelsea, to be honest with you.
03I think he'll be hanging on to see what's going on and things like that. So I think he'll stay, but it's just... Do you want him to stay? I personally know I think I would replace him. I think there's huge pressure under him to start next season really, really well. And I think what's most likely to happen is because there'll be a lot more players to sign in the summer, that they'll have a difficult start and they'll do what they ended up with doing with Brendan Rodgers, which is replacing him in October. I think that's most likely to happen. So I would rather do it now. But I think there is a chance, a small chance that he can turn it around because, you know, he is a good coach.
42It's just for, I think, for Liverpool supporters, this feeling that, you know, the style of football that he wants to play and he's trying to sort of introduce really just isn't particularly, you know, what we want to see. And lots of clubs have had that, Manchester United have had it, Everton have had it, you know, this idea of this, there's this type of football that we want to watch and it's just different to sort of what we're seeing. I think the biggest difference for me with Liverpool is you talk about style of football. Style of football doesn't really matter to a certain extent, whether it's three at the back and four, four, two or four, three, three, whatever it is, I think if you can clearly see it doesn't work in terms of a tactical point of view and formation, then you can tweak things.
25For me, the biggest difference, I said this a few weeks ago, is when we used to go to Anfield, it was horrible. you know you had the forwards closing the keeper down the midfielders pressing in centre backs up on the halfway line and we used to say first 20-30 minutes you know hit the channels time win throw up throw in tie up the pitch slow the game down quieting the crowd down and I think it's gone more of a mid block and you know you're seeing teams coming you know teams low down the league coming to anfield and the keepers playing out and they're taking the ball and there's no real pressure on the ball.
59So I think that's the biggest change for me where you go to Anfield, the first thing you want to do is quiet in the crowd. But I think actually by Liverpool not pressing, that's the quieting the crowd down themselves and frustrating the Liverpool fans. So that's the big change for me. But yeah, I just think I'm split. I'm not bothered if he stays or goes, if he's been on. You don't lose his sleep. No, no, but I'm quite split should he go or should he stay because he won the league last season I think he deserves a bit more time Sir Alex Ferguson wrote to me if the manager has no control he will not last Wayne Well that's what I was saying with the Mo Salah situation maybe I'm being a bit extreme in saying they keep me away from the stadium because of course he deserves a good send I've just been at Everton then seeing James Comer get a great reception so of course he does but does he deserve it just for this it's the second time he's done it and I don't think you can say you love the club and you care of the club I think you can do things in the right way in a better way and I've been in situations where I've not done the right thing and I released a statement the day of a Champions League game when I asked to leave Manchester United and the next day I went and apologised I realised quickly I was wrong for doing that so I just think this has been handled in the wrong way by Mo Salah and the quicker he accepts he's no longer the player he once was and listen he could have a role if he accepts that he could have a role still at Liverpool if he wanted it not now because he's saying he's leaving but he could have still had a role there at Liverpool but I think from what he'd done in the end of December and now it's just a shame to see one of the great icon of Premier League players leave the Premier League probably in this situation.

05Wayne, take me back actually. Sorry if you probably don't want to relive this, but we kind of glossed over you missing out on that final home game of the season. Just how was that dealt with? How were you told and how did you react? Yeah, I think it was Swansia home, if I'm not mistaken. When Alex Ferguson, his last home game as manager at Man United, I'd trained all week, no issues. I was in the dressing room an hour and a half before kick-off and he announced it to the team. Then Mick Phelan asked me to go into his office after he did and I thought I was on the bench. I went in and he said he's not put me in the squad because of what had happened and the arguments and he didn't want any distractions on his final home game, which I felt was wrong because I didn't distract anything.
56I trained hard. I was ready to play and didn't cause any issues. So that's where I felt it was wrong. So that was it. And I went up, watched the game from one of the boxers and I had about four pints. And then when I collected me... So then the worst thing about it, we went to lift the Premier League trophy and the manager, the boss, was handing medals out. so I had to go off and put me on the towel and put a medal on me. You didn't stick your veil. In my full kit, yeah. But no, listen, that was tough. We'd done a parade after that game with the trophy and I was sat on the bus and that was hard to take.
30And this is actually, I think, the first time I've ever said any details on that. So it is tough, but I think in the bigger picture, you'd better have discussions with the club, which I went and then did, rather than air everything in public and leave it the way it is. Come on then, John. What do you want to happen on Sunday? Do you want a Wayne Rooney situation for Mo Salah and what do you want to happen over the summer as well? I'd love to watch Mo Salah one last time and I think most Liverpool fans are the same. Sorry, listen, I'm maybe being a bit extreme now. I'm just trying to make a point.
04I think he has to do something now. No, he could. Listen, he could do. He could do. But I think he'll... I hope he starts. if not I hope he gets a good 20-30 minutes and we get to say a good bye most Liverpool fans to be honest with you we just can't wait for the season to end and so after Sunday we're looking forward to watching the World Cup and enjoying something else and I think time will maybe help the only way around for the managers if they get some good players in the summer they get what he wants which is wide forwards which is defensive midfield and they're able to really attack it next year and if he can do that then there is a way that he can turn around But I just worry that the pressure's built to such a level that he's almost on a bit of a hide-and-turn-off.
47And so I think it's going to be really tough for him to turn it around. But it is possible. You never know. John, you did mention Alonso going to Chelsea. Kelly's joked that I'm Alonso's agent. Yeah, but you've been saying he's going to Liverpool all season. He's a rubbish agent. All season, yeah. All season I've been saying Alonso's going to go to Liverpool. How do you feel about that? Would you have wanted to see him at Liverpool? And are you a bit gutted that he's going to Chelsea? Yeah, a little bit. Listen, I didn't think it was a short thing. I didn't think he was going to come in and, you know, necessarily solve everything.
18And he had an amazing season at Leverkusen, but then the second year he slipped down a little bit, similar to what happened with Slott, as what has happened with Slott. But I think the fact that he played for Liverpool, the fact that I think he would have brought everyone together and would have been someone who we could also get behind. I think there would have been a lot more optimism going into next season with Alonso than there would have been with Slot. And that's another thing, the man adds pressure next season. If we start a bit mediocre and Chelsea are flying under Xabi Alonso, then that's not going to help him much either.
54Do you know what I'd love to say at Liverpool? I'd love to at some capacity I've seen him on another podcast saying that he'd go in as a coach or an assistant I'd love to see Steven Jarrett back there I just think As head coach? Any role I just think he's so iconic and you know the leader he is and obviously he absolutely loves the football club Roy Keane will come for me now saying oh he loves the club No but I think for us someone in there who we feel like understands the club understands the supporters a connection to the Liverpool fans I think that's always important and while I'm watching Stephen Gerrard doing TNT sports now and I'm thinking if I was Liverpool I'd be trying to get him in at any capacity for his experience his leadership everything about Liverpool Football Club you know it runs through him and I just think it's Liverpool are missing that opportunity there well I mean it wouldn't be the first midfielder from the 2000s managing in the Premier League next season.
58You've got like Lampard, Carrick, Alonso and Arteta. So, I mean, it would make sense to carry on that trend. Yeah, it would, definitely. John, who would you want in if not Alonso? And Keith Andrews. He played in the Premier League. Good memory. True. Yeah, it's tough. I think now Alonso's gone. I think it's most likely that the slot will start the season. and you know there's part of me when I read the heavy metal football thing with Mo Salah I'm like is he Jürgen's coming back like that was my initial thing like is he like you know then you sort of get going maybe with Stevie working alongside Jürgen they both live in Formby they could they could car share to training if they wanted to I know there's talk of the manager from Frankfurt and how well he's done and he looks like a little bit of a mini Jürgen in a way doesn't he in terms of you know how he wants to play I don't know I think I think just someone who can, what Wayne was saying before was, you know, really resonated with me about, you know, what it used to be like.
58When I say style of play, I don't mean tactics and stuff like that. I just mean, what used to make me happiest was when people used to say, oh, Liverpool's the hardest place to go to. Liverpool, you know, Anfield, or just playing against Liverpool, you know, that's the hardest game you'll play all season. And I think that used to give me a lot of pride, you know, more so than, oh, they've got the most skillful players or they've got this and that. You know, I want Liverpool to be the hardest game. And at the moment, I feel like we're the easiest you know if you're in a crisis rock up to Anfield and you'll you know you'll get a point you saw it with Spurs you know we're the only club who'd give that that manager anything do you know what I mean he's got his one point it was same for Chelsea they lost six in a row I'll come to Anfield you'll have a lovely day out it's too nice at the moment and you know we wanted to be a little bit more horrible certainly coming to Anfield Honestly it was horrible I've said in interviews it was always the hardest place for me to go and play emotionally obviously first thing but i remember you used to walk out walk out the tunnel and then you know you're still on the pitch and whoever the captain was i was captain at times but whoever the captain was is doing the cost the flip of the coin and and then you never walk alone comes on and then the first five minutes was just torture and the ratting around everywhere you've got dirt kites running all over the place and gerrard and torres doing it then suarez comes in and starts doing it and you're thinking this is going to be a horrible long game and you knew you'd have to be at your best and you'd have to be tough to be able to tough it out and compete with them as well.
26And as you've just said there, I just don't think that's been there, especially this year. John, thank you so much for joining us. Your second appearance of the season. I hope you can enjoy the final home-going. It sounds like you're going to enjoy your break over the summer, that's for sure. We certainly are. So Wayne, what do you make of the fact that Xavi Alonso has gone to Chelsea? they didn't have too long to mull over their cup final defeat before it was announced, did they? No, and do you know what I like? It's been announced as a manager. A lot of people picking up on that. I've done the FA Cup final yesterday and I didn't speak too highly of Chelsea and how they've been but I'm actually going to praise the ownership of Chelsea because I think they're obviously clever people in what they are and what they do but I think they've realised that they've messed up and they're trying to fix it and I think fair play to them for doing that.
21Alonso I think has done really well obviously won the league in his first season with Leverkusen it was always going to be tough for them at Realms I felt that was too big too soon for them and now he's got in at Chelsea so it's going to be tough but I think the first win he could probably say is he's got a four year deal and getting announced as manager, which tells you he should be a little bit more hands-on in players coming in and leaving. So do you think Chelsea are thinking a lot more long-term now with appointing him as manager? You'd say so, you'd think so and hope so. Because what they've probably looked at is Javi Alonso is a very talented young manager still.
11he's been successful obviously in Germany and he plays in Germany top level played in Spain, England all at the top level won numerous trophies won the World Cup one I think it was two Euros so you think that there's going to be players who want to play for him so I think they're looking at thinking do you know what we've got someone in here he's got a bit of order about him who can attract players let's go down this route and use and use that rather than, you know, having someone who's probably never played the game telling us what players we should sign. Let's actually show a bit of common sense and actually get the ideas off the manager.

51And then I think it's have the input of both and try and get to the best option. I think he's probably one of the best managers out there that anybody could have got. He still had a 70 % win rate at Real Madrid, which is incredibly high. And I think, you know, going unbeaten in any league is an incredible achievement. And I think if Chelsea don't get any European football and they've got one game to play a week with Xabi Alonso at the helm, they might be a dangerous proposition next year. Yeah, definitely. And I think that they have Chelsea probably in a better position to what Man United were at the start of the season.
31Do you think? Yeah, I think they've got some very talented players. And if they get the signings right in the summer, then I actually think they could be up there challenging for the league next year if they get the signings right. With no European football though could they have to sell some of those really talented players that you talk of their way? I think they have to sell some anyway. They've got a big squad haven't they? Yeah they've got a big squad they've made some very strange signings and some of my work here to Arsenal and sign Gittins which I just didn't get I didn't understand then Garnaccio never got the sign of Garnaccio so there's the signings which they've made which are very strange signings so I think there's players they need to get rid of in order to get more experience in there to help some of them some of them young players need help you can see that yesterday you've seen that all season they need help in certain situations and a bit of guidance on the pitch off the pitch when things have gone tough and if they get that right I think they can be a real threat next season.
38How helpful is it that they've already announced a manager in terms of recruitment for next season? I think they had to. They had to do it. And that's, you know, we've seen Bournemouth do that already. It looks like in the next coming days, I'm not too sure the Man United are going to have that done before the end of the season. So in terms of getting players in and recruiting players and talking to players, I said this last time the players want to know who the manager is and just the manager want them so I think getting Alonso in now before the end of the season and no doubt over this next week he'll be at the training ground he'll be meeting with players getting a feel for them early on and maybe telling some players to try and find a new club and that's how brutal I remember when I went into DC as manager the first day the first thing I had to do was teleplayer I think he was about 28 he was getting traded to Vancouver like a six hour flight a different country and his wife was like a month away from giving birth to his second child it was the first thing they had to do your heartless way I was thinking to be fair I just said listen this is all before me I'm just giving you the news but I'd imagine Londo will be looking down at lands and he'll have an idea already I think going back to that though moving players on they're on these crazy long contracts there aren't they is that going to be that easy for Chelsea to move these players on no it's crazy that's why it feels like it's such a big job for him because it's like you said there probably does need to yeah but then then the players got a decision to make haven't they if you're not going to play and we've seen it at the start of this season with some players and at Chelsea where they're in a different dressing room and they're training in the afternoons which I think is wrong because that's not their fault if they've fallen out of form or whatever.
31So I think that is wrong and there's ways to handle things. Well, also in terms of protecting your investment. Yeah, of course. So I thought that was wrong. But in terms of players getting seven-year, eight-year contracts, I think it's absolutely crazy. I'm surprised you said you think they can challenge for the league because you've been quite vocal a few times this season about the Chelsea players' mentality. Yeah, but that changes new manager. And that's sad to say that because, you know, I think players can very quickly get Manja sacked we've seen that many times and I think that happened to Chelsea maybe not with Muresco but definitely with Resinia players were a part of I'm not just saying that's the only reason he got sacked but that was a part of players coming out being vocal about that so players have a big influence on that but I just think they've got really good players talented players young players are mixing a bit of exit dropping you know three or four players with experience into that and maybe five or six players in the round the squad with experience to be a guidance and help on the pitch and off the pitch I think they could challenge it not having European football obviously will help them in the same way it's helped United this season and then the challenge will be you know game time for a lot of them players and are them players willing to leave a bit of money behind to go and play or are they going to sit there and go in that dungeon of a dress room where some of the players were at the beginning of the season?
07Just quickly, are you surprised? I think we all agree, don't we, that it's a really good move from Chelsea. We've all kind of waxed lyrical about Alonso at various points, particularly you, Kay. We know you think it's great. Yeah, I think Wayne's right they could challenge next season. But from Alonso's point of view, there was a lot of, I mean, Kay, you thought he was holding out for Liverpool potentially are you surprised that he's gone to Chelsea Wayne or do you think that signals that the Liverpool vacancy isn't going to come up anytime soon well maybe he's gone to Chelsea because maybe that was part of his negotiations that he wants to be a manager and not head coach and Liverpool weren't prepared to do that so you just don't know you don't know what the situation is and you know he might have felt that he's gone to Real Madrid and didn't have the control he wanted and so the first thing he wants when he goes into a club whichever club he goes into he wants control of it so maybe that was a part of the reason but we've got to also remember Liverpool have got a manager still and Liverpool might have turned around to keep an eye on his slots so you don't know what reason I think whatever you want to say or whatever anybody wants to say Chelsea's still a massive club they still won a trophy whatever you think about the World Club Cup they still won two trophies last season yeah exactly yeah so they've still that it's not like you're going into a squad that's battling relegation or isn't hasn't been successful um it's still an attractive prospect and whether you like it or not for someone that's not from this country living in london's always a massive fault no i'm being genuine yeah you're saying that to wayne no no no for a lot of those foreign managers like i think wayne would agree and even a lot of those foreign players like living in london's a massive you can't I was going to say, you're picking a fight with the complete wrong person about what's best living in this country.
55G'day with your chip arm. You can't believe it. The good news, I imagine. I mean, I don't need to ask you if you're both happy that it sounds like Manchester United are going to get Michael Carrick confirmed this week. Everyone's reporting it. It's just been common sense, hasn't it? And it'll be nice to just know it, won't it? Yeah. Listen, I've been very supportive, obviously, of Michael. I heard something today, someone saying, on the radio, saying that Michael's got his mates to push for him to get the job. Well, it must be. And maybe a few others. But me being friends with Michael's, I had no input in that.
30Listen, I'm an honest person. And I always give me opinions. And if Michael hadn't done what he's done, I'd be saying, listen, he's probably not the right man for the job. So bring someone else in. but I really felt before he went in I felt it was a massive challenge with the first two games he had to set this on here but I feel what he's done he's gone in he's beat Arsenal City Liverpool Chelsea got United into third place in the league I think you could not give it to him I just feel you could not give it to him so if that is what happens this week then I'd be delighted for him I think he deserves it and it's going to be a huge challenge it's going to be a big challenge for him next season obviously I think they need to bring more players in maybe lose maybe lose a few players summer's going to be big isn't it and obviously having Champions League football again next season and hopefully they can go further in the Cups this season the other two Cups this season it's going to be a big challenge for him but I think let's now the challenge will start for him Michael will know that he's not stupid he's done well enough to get a job now the challenge starts for him and I'm behind him I hope he does really well and I'll be supporting him from a distance Is that you saying you're not going to go in as a coach?
00Oh man I would love to see you there as a striker's coach I don't even need to ask if you're happy actually so don't ask that No I'm delighted I want to know what you think his biggest like what are his first things he has to address this summer I think he needs to address the midfield situation. We haven't really addressed the midfield situation since Michael Carrick left as a midfielder. And I think obviously with Casemiro going and, you know, we saw his send off today, I think Man United look like a completely different team without Casemiro in the midfield as well. I think you need about three midfielders at least in the summer.
35And I think also one thing that we have to be conscious of, he has done a phenomenal job but he's only had to play one competition and I think next season where we've got Europe and we're going to be in other cup competitions just on that okay sorry just on that it's I've heard a lot of people saying that they've had no Europe that's not my Alex fault no no no it's not no but my point is about like being able to utilise the whole squad and being able to rotate players at the right time he's being used to that I know to a different level but at the level he was at he's been used to that in terms of the championship having to do that week in, week out and rotating your squad and your training sessions how does your training session look when you play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Wednesday so how does your week look so that's what your planning is and you're planning to play recover, train, play recover, train, rest whatever it is you put all your plans in place so he's been used to doing that in championship level so it's not he's just doing it at a higher level No I know but because we had a couple of couple of instances where we played two games in a week and it didn't go the way we wanted to I think obviously the challenge is next season to be able to bolster bolster your squad to a level where it does where you can do that in an effective way Yeah It's on the ownership as well isn't it to give him the Well yeah I mean that's that but yeah don't get me started on the ownership Yeah well that's where your squad needs to be better so when you do rotate you've got quality players also coming in rather than maybe some players coming in and the quality drops.
17Perfect place to end this I think. Thanks guys. Reminder you can listen to the Wayne Rooney show on BBC Sounds or you can watch it on the iPlayer or the BBC Sport YouTube. We'll see you next time.

03Chicago talks a lot. Hold on, let me step over here. People are talking too much. We debate about food, deep dish, tavern style, who's got the best beef. We yell across rooms, across blocks, across generations. Yes, nice earrings, Grammy. And now we're doing it on our phones, too. Video calls from the L train, group chats that never shut up. Neighbors texting you the score before your TV catches up. Get a load of this guy. Ketchup on a dog. Yeah, we've got thoughts. Because nothing here gets built without conversation. Nothing moves without connection. So if you think you know AT &T, it might be time to rethink that because their network has improved, like, a lot, which means Chicagoans can keep speaking their mind with the top-rated fiber internet in the city.
