In short

The Wayne Rooney Show returns Friday; hosts discuss Wayne Rooney being ill and recap a recent Manchester United match (vs Crystal Palace), focusing on first-half missed chances, second-half improvement, set plays, and standout moments like Xerxes’ finish and Mason Mount scoring. They also preview a pre-recorded episode featuring Colleen Rooney and Danny Jones (McFly) from a jungle experience, including stories about their friendship, how they met during Rooney’s England duty, and what Wayne is like at home (what he gets annoyed about).

Guest backgrounds

Colleen Rooney (Wayne Rooney’s wife; TV personality) and Danny Jones (McFly musician). Key claims/examples: United should’ve been 3–4 goals down; second-half set plays changed the game; Mount’s 90 minutes is a positive sign; “another turning point” for Ruben Amorim is debated.

1:16Hello, this is the Wayne Rooney Show and this is a bit more of a formal introduction because there's going to be a noticeable difference to this episode. Hello, Kay.

1:24Kae Kurd:Hello, Kelly. Yeah, no Wayne, unfortunately, is there? No, unfortunately, Wayne hasn't been very well on Sunday. So we weren't going to do any pod, but I'm going to be honest. I reckon had Man United not won today, we wouldn't be doing a pod, but they did. No, we probably wouldn't. I'd have been like, sorry, guys, I'm sick as well. I can't do it. Come down with a flu. But yeah, we won. It wasn't an emphatic win, was it? But we'll take them. Was it a slightly lucky win? I thought Palace in the first half in particular will be ruining their missed chances. Oh, I think we should have been about three or four nil down in the first half.

1:56Kae Kurd:I think we were abysmal in the first half. But I think credit to the players. In the second half, they came out and it looked like a new team. It was the system derby, wasn't it? And I think it was one of those games where you could just go man for man. And it seemed like in the second half, the set plays were what made the difference. I thought Xerxes' finish was absolutely incredible. The turn, the touch and the finish was amazing. and it was great for him to get a goal like that under his belt for his confidence. And I thought it was also positive seeing Mason Mount on the score sheet and him finishing 90 minutes because you don't get Mason Mount finishing 90 minutes often and that's a good sign because you could see why today there were certain things that he was doing, his movement and some of his past and stuff.

2:42Kae Kurd:You could see why managers really want him in their team. I feel like you could probably copy and paste this because I've said it before, but could this be another turning point from Ruben Amirim? He needed today. No, I didn't even finish my question and you said no. Do you know what? Like I've said this often, I've lost a lot of faith in him and it's going to take a prolonged period of success in order for me to have a lot more faith in him. I think, yeah, we've had two losses in nine Premier League games. However, the manner of the loss against Everton speaks volumes and the performances haven't exactly been commanding performances as well.

3:17Kae Kurd:We beat Liverpool, yes, but everybody's beaten Liverpool recently. Not West Ham. Not West Ham. But yeah, it's one of those. So you have to put the results into context. However, I think we're sixth, as we're recording this, which just goes to show how terrible we've been and how unpredictable this league is at the moment. So yeah, it's a positive. It's a good win. I'll enjoy the win. But yeah, I mean, there's a long way to go before I'm going to be saying Man United are back. Good to see you channeling your inner way in there because for weeks, every time Man United do win, you're kind of going, oh, but this, but that.

3:50And he's going, just enjoy it, Kay. So I'm pleased you're finally enjoying it, listening to Wayne. We do, of course, wish Wayne all the best and the rest of the Rooney household because it doesn't sound like he's been very well. And talking of the Rooney household, we're going to let you in on a little spoiler alert. We have pre-recorded the episode that's going to be in your ears and, of course, available on iPlayer and YouTube on Friday. We recorded it last week. And Kay, do you want to kind of lift the lid on what we did?

4:15Kae Kurd:Yeah, it was amazing. we had Colleen on obviously and she's always great fun and we got Danny Jones from McFly on as well just to talk about their experience in a jungle and we got a bit of insight into what Wayne's like and what she really gets annoyed about when Wayne's around at home so yeah it was good fun and both of them are great fun as well we had a lot of fun on Thursday yeah we also spoke to Danny about Wayne's infamous singing, their relationship and how they've kind of been friends for years. There was an interesting story about how they met when Wayne was away on England international duty as well that I'm sure you guys will enjoy and yeah the dynamics of the Rooney household are one that I am fascinated by but massive thanks to Colleen and Danny for joining us and that will be in your ears and on your screens on Friday so don't miss that.

5:02An apology once again that Wayne couldn't be with us but we do wish he gets better very soon and we're back in on Friday with that episode. See you later guys. And remember the Wayne Rooney show is available on BBC Sounds, the BBC Sport YouTube and BBC iPlayer. See you soon. Thanks, Kay, doing my job.

5:25Take the leash off your laptop with the processor that gives you long battery life. Work on the go. Jump between back-to-back calls. Stay locked in from brewing morning coffee to burning the midnight oil. Get maximum performance. even when unplugged. Finally, the freedom to move across the room or across the world is here. Snapdragon, that's how.
