0:00Indian food has a problem. When you see Indian food, you have to eat so much of 10 grams of protein. 9 grams of protein. How much protein is in this 100 grams of protein? 24 grams. But I have to eat this whole 24 grams. Structurally see, your calories from protein is less than 10%. Today we have Prashant Desai, who is a health educator. Protein is a big part of my body. My weight loss will be given. 1:02So if you are those people who have increased protein and have reduced calories, if you make a friend, you will get a friend from 500-200 calories. You will get a low fat paneer from 15-16 grams of protein. You will get a low fat paneer from that. You will get only 1500 calories. If you want to improve your diet, fitness and long term health,

1:26But how much protein is important? WHO recommends 0.8 grams per kg of body weight. So if Raj is 70 kg of your weight, then you should eat a day. Protein shakes. Tell me, is it healthy? It seems that kidney becomes stone. Two things I want to say. Does eating excess protein result in damage to the kidney? There is no evidence whatsoever. Do people whose kidneys already damaged, should they have excess protein? Answer to that is absolutely no.

I see you more in office than me. more importantly I always I wanted to thank you personally that when we talk about protein you thought we will discuss protein with me so you and your team big thank you deeply honored that this subject is very close to my heart that's why I am thanking you I always say I always talk to my house I start with the kids and I always play who will become a croon party so I always go to a nutritional conference and I always say Let's play, who is my protein partner? So, it's so important for me, protein Raj. Why is it important for me? So, structurally, I have three reasons for me.

3:28One is patriotic, one is perspective reason and one is personal reason. Patriotic, as I've studied protein in the last 10-12 years, my belief is that the day India will reach the adequacy and optimum level, we will reach our major health problems we will solve our own whether you talk about obesity or diabetes and both obesity and diabetes are accelerators for your top 5 killers in India heart attack and stroke, cancer, Alzheimer, organ failure obesity and diabetes this is the same thing it accelerates all the things so if I have solved obesity and diabetes my personal opinion that today we are on average 70-72 years jira hai if you look at Singapore Hong Kong the top living countries they are at 85 years so because you are born in India you are paying tax like you are paying that you are paying less than you are and after that when you double click it is because our lifestyle habits have become like you are in India there is a 50 % probability growing up you will become a diabetic there is a 70 % probability you will become an obese 70 % chances that if you are born then you will be big will be why is that statistics ICMR report came in 2000 in 2023 in 2023 in 2024 they had done with Indian Diabetes Association in that time when they had 1 ,20 ,000 people measured and if you look at that category of people who are overweight and obese in India they were more than 60 crore overweight and obese but this is at a time when what is India's median age today 29 years at the median age of 29 if you have almost 60 crore over weight and obese as these people one grow in life two as our per capita grows your 70 % probability you will become obese if you are diabetic and obese your risk of heart attack goes up by almost 200 % your risk of cancer goes up by 300 % you know when we talk about cancer of cancer.

5:38In our science, you establish causality is difficult to establish. You will find a lot of correlations. Right? There was causality in smoking. The people who smoke, have lung cancer. Smoking causes lung cancer. When the second thing in cancer was causality, it was established with obesity. If it's a big deal, it's cancer. There are 13 different types of cancers. Now, if you are overweight or obese, for example, you have more fat inside your body there is a subcutaneous fat which is not harmful but if you keep eating more and you keep getting fatter, these fat start to leak from your fat cells and this goes to wrap your organs which we call visceral fat or visceral adiposity means, if you are all organs if you are in liver, then you will die from liver failure if you have fat in the kidney if you have fat in the kidney, you will start kidney problem heart problem I just feel if we just correct this particular part so my first reason patriotic second perspective okay today protein protein protein protein protein protein protein protein protein protein protein protein protein protein and some of the things are wrong okay it's not in your hands so perspectively I just feel that protein is so even today misunderstood and hopefully today we will break so many protein related myths by going so deeper into protein taking people everything through the nuances of protein through the lens of science we will not talk about our conjecture I think hopefully the more people listen to this podcast perspective will change around protein third personal and this I had also taken you one time you know my real deal was a lot of viral where I said that there is 10 grams of protein in the world I got a lot of hate so this topic is personal for me it was a Dr.

7:41Lennon Langer moment you heard of Dr. Lennon Langer? no she was the first woman psychologist ever to be admitted in Harvard in 1979 I think he did not have a big job on her whole world and mind-body connection and his whole life changed with an experiment. When he was young, he went to a horse event. His jockey was Dr. Langer told him, he was not a doctor, he was a doctor. He said, I'll take my horse and take my horse and take my hot dog and she froze. He's crazy. Horses are her body. They don't eat meat. He's eating hot dog. 9:56And you think, I'm curious, I'm going to eat and for me, what a novelty item, right? And I was like, we are eating so many big potatoes in Bombay. There are potatoes in the big pot. There are also some potatoes. So, as I came back from Manchester, I took our vada pao and sent to the lab to test. I was looking at what it was. The results showed that the vada pao of Kirti college has 10 grams of protein. For me, as an educator, I made, when I was doing my podcast, I said, we are eating protein, but we have 10 grams of protein. And when we cut it out, it gave people an impression that I am saying for protein eat vada pav my intent was different but it went viral out of context but for me Dr.

10:54Daniel Lengel moment it changed me it got me into thinking and last half a year I have gone so deeper into the subject and the way you go deeper and as much as you know when you go deeper that's where you realize that our how much of the understanding is now weak or not at that level just to understand this remarkable thing called protein. So I'm very excited Raj to discuss this. Interesting. We'll discuss from all three angles. But first, because you've established an obesity already a problem. Let's go start from the lens of that only. If I give protein in my body or give protein a right type, so my weight loss will be done ok it will be done how will it happen how will it be done because that's the biggest problem right now in India everyone has to reduce weight the baby has to be more baby the baby has to be more baby and the baby has to be very obese they are struggling because they are going through they are going through a problem which nobody can understand and I probably don't know what they are doing I have seen my mom personally go through it in my family I have seen bariatric operations I've seen people doing keto I've seen people just starving to death to another level and everyone has to reduce weight this is what we will discuss in our two things we will discuss one of you will listen to a remarkable story cockroaches and I will tell you cockroaches through I will prove you how it is studies but I don't know but this is you have to understand a little protein before you.

12:45Why is protein a different macronutrient? We generally understand from the macronutrient perspective. In 1838, you can say protein, then it discovered it. A chemist was a chemist. He discovered it. He basically was seeing that there is nitrogen in every product. How much nitrogen is? He was studying it.

13:14So he was very amazed and what nitrogen is doing. So he had all these studies and a scientist friend discussed and he said, he did it first, he gave it a name. So when he had tried to understand his functionality, he gave it a name as protein. Protein comes from the Greek word protos. Protos means basically primary. and after giving this name you can see it was remarkable that they were talking about 1938 in that time they told their studies that from protein springs life so the name has to do justice to this remarkable macronutrient called protein so there was protein protein is a very different macronutrient compared to carbs and fat and in this which you will talk about obesity later Please.

14:36but protein is made different amino acids a simple way I do ABCDEFG our alphabet 26 alphabet protein is made 20 alphabet or 20 letters which we call essential amino acids this 9 is essential which we eat and 11 is non-essential which we make the body itself Okay. Okay. Now, when you use words, there are words, there are words 5 letters, there are words 20 letters. That's how your proteins are. Because these are made by joining different amino acids, when we talk about insulin, this is also a kind of protein. So, there are 54 amino acids in insulin. Okay. If we take a big amino acid, there will be 2 ,000 amino acids.

15:30So, depending on its function, amino acids mother nature join in your body and it becomes protein right so this what you see is the differentiation N which is nitrogen another in every amino acid profile the R you see this is a side chain I say protein's secret sauce different amino acids in this R is different this doesn't change change not to happen. The side chain is attached to it. It is different. It makes it a different amino acid. Right? This is the whole protein or amino acid secret. We talk about protein in normal language. But we talk about amino acids. Now we understand why we need protein.

16:23So if you look at what we eat. We eat it 3 times. as we eat. One, we eat for living and living for energy. For energy, Mother Nature has two micronutrients sources. You get carbs from energy. You get fat from fat. Fat is a little use for structural reasons. But largely, this is for energy. Another, you eat digestion. That's the work of fiber, which is a carbohydrate. Third, we eat our body's structural integrity. to maintain the most Baptismcahn stud,

I want to enjoy activities that I do. only possible if you have muscle mask protect yourself if you have to go then you have to movement muscle of two things one is mobility the other is metabolism if mobility is gone then life is what kind of work if you focus on muscle-centric nutrition then it's interesting we started this thing obesity weight loss you forget to think about loss and gain to think about it.

2:05:32I don't need fat loss. I need muscle gain. True. True. Fat loss doesn't mean it will be muscle gain. But it will be 100 % impact of muscle gain. So start thinking in a different way. Okay.
