In short

Tony Allen and Josh Smith discuss defense, championship mindset, and debate LeBron James’ defensive ranking; they also react to Bam Adebayo leaving LeBron off his all-time top five, LeBron comparing himself to the Rolling Stones, and a claim that LeBron and Anthony Davis never worked out together.

Guests (backgrounds)

  • Tony Allen: 6x NBA All-Defensive Team selection, NBA champion with the Boston Celtics, key “Grit and Grind” Memphis Grizzlies defender.
  • Josh Smith: former NBA player and co-host (ATL/California background mentioned in intro).

Key claims

  • Tony Allen argues LeBron is “overrated” as a defender because LeBron has too many on-court jobs (scoring, playmaking, rebounding, steals, plus guarding the top option).
  • Tony says his defensive value was limiting opponents’ scoring averages, often in limited minutes.
  • Tony says LeBron’s “defense” ranking ignores how much energy a full-time primary defender must spend.
  • Bam’s top five excludes LeBron; Tony and others speculate it’s personal/salt about team choices.
  • LeBron’s Rolling Stones analogy: don’t force retirement narratives if he still loves the craft and drives revenue.
  • Lionel Hollins claim: LeBron told AD you must get up at 3–4am to work out with him.

Notable examples

  • Tony describes guarding Kobe “left” vs “right” tendencies.
  • Tony cites his ACL injury after a dead-ball play and how he adapted to survive in the league.
  • Championship story: Grizzlies Celtics-era anecdotes include “champagne ran out” and “buy-in”/camaraderie (e.g., “Ticket University,” “Ray University,” “Paul University”).
  • Coverage philosophy: “show, get under or over” vs today’s “lazy” drop coverage.

Always one of the funniest dudes in the room. That's a given.

Hey, guess what, though? I got another special guest tonight in the building. Hey, one of the toughest competitors I ever played against. I ain't going to lie to y 'all. A six-time all-defensive team selection, an NBA champion with the Boston Celtics. The heartbeat for those Memphis Grizzlies teams that everybody remembers as the grit and grind era. Mr. First Team himself. Mr. Tony Allen, what's happening to play, boy? Oh, man, I appreciate y 'all having me, man.

5:38Much love, man. man. Much love. Hey, man. Hey, appreciate you for joining us, bro. Man, you know it's only right, man. I gotta come sit on with the real and all that. You talking about, hey, I was one of the toughest. Hey, man, nigga had to get real good sleep thinking you, bro. Wasn't no going to the night hour spots up there in Atlanta. I got good rest coming to Atlanta, man. Hey, hey, hey, hey, we appreciate you, bro, for taking some time out to join us. And I already know, you already know you was one of the toughest Kobe Gay. You probably said you was the toughest is ever guard him i mean man listen what you got going bro man no man right now i'm just really just man i was hollering at josh the other day man i i've just been really putting a lot of time and trying to you know getting my son to answer to the test and trying to get to the league man trying to that's it that's all man just putting a lot of time into that man man smooth talk about that all the time bro we got the blueprint we got to pass it along you know what i mean hey ta tell me something bro you ever think did you ever think they'll retire your jersey in mephis bro yeah Honestly, no, man, considering even how I got there, man.

6:42You know, I'm not everybody familiar with free agency. During that time, I had just left Boston. Yeah. I left the 2010 finals, and Kobe, that was my assignment. He shot probably one of his worst percentages in the playoff alone. His whole career. Yeah, yeah. And I think when I left there, I thought that I was going to resign back, and I ain't want nothing but a third year. You know what I'm saying? I wasn't trying to go eat the market like that. I was just, hey, man, just give me a third year. Yeah. I thought they took a lot of interest in Nate Robinson, and then they was about to draft Avery Bradley.

7:19So I think that they kind of was like trying to go a different way without disrespecting me by trying to give me the same deal that I had, and I know I outplayed my deal. Hey, but T.A., you was a bucket at Oklahoma State, bro. Oh, yeah, shut up, O. State. Hey, you was a bucket at O. State. what tell me when you came into the league i guess you were like man damn this i'm just gonna lock in like what made you take on that role because a lot of cats don't like that they want the glitz and glamour they want the threes the the he he's the ha ha yeah you feel me so for you to be able to sit in that chair and really study cats defensively like what was it what what was it that brought you it wasn't your upbringing you from the shot ain't you born the race born the race come on what was it bro what was the upbringing because i did some boys out there in the shot getting money now yeah Yeah, for sure.

8:03I can't affirm. My upbringing was pretty much everything. Shout out 95th Street, man. Lone Homes, man, to be exact. Juwan Howard, a lot of people don't know, man. He used to live four doors down the street from me. That's my guy. And seeing him actually go to the league, come back in that Bentley Azor, build that court, that's all I needed to see. I said, y 'all, this basketball thing can take you somewhere. And so big shout out to Juwan Howard just for putting that platform for me. Because outside of my neighborhood, you got a wicked jump shot or you know the rest. You see what I'm saying? So I had that mentality to try to survive, the survival mode pretty much.

8:44Toughness came from just coming outside. But man, I can't front. When I got to Boston, I mean, Oklahoma State, I had already knew. I thought I was a prolific school. That's what I thought in my mind. But when I got to Boston, it was like, okay, you got to pass the ball, young man. And I caught on to that quick. And right after that, you know, I got injured, bro. A lot of people know I tore my ACL, man, off a timeout. I mean, a dead ball play. And from there, man, it was just like, how do I survive in this league? And Josh, you know me and Josh was in the rookie all-star game. Hey, Josh, tell me.

9:19Now, y 'all came in the same time or you was a year ahead of him? Yeah, no, we came in the same year. Same draft class. Hold on, hold on. But T.A., Josh, T.A. was on that team when we played against the Celtics. When we were the eighth seed, they were the one seed. I ain't getting no burst. Yeah, yeah. I ain't getting no burst. You ain't getting no, I ain't thinkin' He got a nice little Bentley after that. I did do that. Yeah, yeah. Hey, T.A. Hey, hey. They won by that nice little chick. Yes, indeed. Hey, hey, tell me something, T.A. Who taught you the most throughout that championship run, bro playing with boss i mean you walk in the room kevin garnett paul pierce ray allen rondo like who taught you the most out of all them cats bro well at the time me and rondo we was learning at the same time rondo head was just playing behind sebastian tailfell living he was hot in the mother every day he would tip me i boned all these niggas rondo my abu coon me him and perth if that's how we rocking right we were the youngest so when they had universities they They had Ticket University.

10:22They had Ray University. They had Paul University. True University, I mean. So I gravitated to P on the simple strengths that, you know what? I need to be trying to stick guys like this throughout the league. Because when you look at that payroll sheet, you know damn well you ain't supposed to be hitting so many attempts. So for me, it was like, all right, when Doc catch me doing a little too much, like I'm in Chicago somewhere, he'll put me to the side and say, hey, man, look around, man. dude make 25 million dude make 30 million dude make 25 million do you think you should be shooting the first shots of these games don't you think you should be passing rebounding hitting the lane shooting low clock shots and getting you some uh in uh in the lane steals i said you're right and that way i picked it up for him so if anybody i gotta give it to doc by just straightening my mental because a lot of cats in the league come in the league and don't know how to adjust don't know how to adjust to something new and it be uncomfortable for him.

11:19For me, I say, shit, I got to get out how I live. And so Ray would do things like, man, come to the gym early, get shots up, read books, cold tub, hot tub, just meditating. I was like, okay, I know I ain't fair to be reading no damn book, but I like how he get ready. So I'm looking over, I'm looking over, I'm saying I ain't going to play university, but I fuck with it. I I look at Ticket. You know, Ticket, he over there. You know, all focused, don't want to say nothing real. Yeah, yeah. I say, man, hold on, man. I came a long way from that. I'm going to go to another universe. So I'm at P University.

11:55We turn. We loud. What's up? Yeah, we ain't going. We don't care. Matter of fact, we ain't dabbing hands today when we come out. Yeah, yeah. Like, he'll be on that type of time. And it was just like some, man, let's go. And I gravitated to P, man, and fell up under his wing. And I just felt like if I can guard P, man, I can guard anybody in the league, bro. And we used to play Wands every day, bro. I swear, every day. Hey, no cap, T.A. Look, you know, I had him. My rookie year was Paul Pierce' fifth year. He had just got that big max deal, like$96 million. So you couldn't tell him nothing. You hear me?

12:29You couldn't tell the boy nothing. I know. So, look, you coming there. I'm watching him in games, practice, T.A. I'm like, man, how he getting this off with this little weak-ass jab he just hitting people with? He just jabbing it. I'm like, I'm in practice, T.A. I'm trying to learn it. I got that. I want to know how to get me some easy buckets, too, because it was cash every time. Every time. Smooth. I watched this man. We played against the New Jersey Nets. This was my rookie year. This one had J.K., Kenya Martin, all in. Man, P. had like four points in the first quarter. I can't make this. I mean, the first half.

13:03He was ass trash, T.A. Man finished the game with 48. I'm talking about in the second half, he was just going crazy so being around that bro seeing that at an early age seeing how a guy like paul pierce worked bro i tried i try to pick up any any and everything i can just like you say you hanging around p you trying to see how you think how he move you know what i mean trying to gain an advantage at any point and that's how i was bro all the great cats i played with whether it was stephan marbury whether it was steve nash whether it was sean marion whether it didn't matter. If it was something that I felt like I could steal from that game, bro, and put it into my own to enhance my game, boy, I'm doing that all day long.

13:47Another story for y 'all. Another story for y 'all. Because you played with Kevin Garnett. Yes, indeed. One of my favorite guys to play against Smooth. You already know the series that we had. Him and Smooth went at it. But I had a chance to play with him, too. In Brooklyn, bro. And the first day I met him, Smooth, we come to the gym in September. We all finna play pickup. You know, we getting ready for the season. We in there playing pickup. We got Andre Blash. Andre Blash pop, he hit a three. He, you know, Andre Blash talking stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, he talking stuff. Him and KG guarding each other.

14:24They come down, run a pick and roll, hit KG at the top of the three. He shot it, he shot the three, made it. He said, I been working on my shit too. Nigga, I been working on my shit too. Hey, hey. That's him, Joe. All that's him. Hey, man, listen. Just having his presence around, bro, it meant everything for us, bro. He done so much by not even having to do a whole lot on the court. You know what I mean? But just by him being out there, his presence, him being vocal, keeping everybody in order, it was great. So I know you probably learned a whole lot from him. Yeah, hey, listen. Any pick and roll I was in, it gave me that much energy and aggressiveness to not get rejected.

15:06Yo, I was going over the screen. You got to run in the big fella. I ain't tripping on nothing you doing. And so I liked it there. And back then, you know, Josh, I know you know y 'all went, we did shows. We did the show and get back. Yeah. We got to get over and get under. It was never drop coverage. Never drop. How y 'all even feel about that in today's game? Man, that's crazy, man. That's a lazy coverage. That's a lazy coverage. Yeah, and guys want switching everything like they do now. That's why we used to do the show, get under or get over. You know what I mean? Because think about it, Smooth.

15:38Our teams used to switch a lot, though. Yeah, we switched a lot because we had like sizes. You know what I mean? Yeah, it's easy to do it then, yeah. Yeah, it wasn't a lot of teams doing that back then, bro. You know what I mean? Things are a lot different now. Hey, T.A., give us a championship story, bro, that you probably, you know, a good one. Some maybe you have told, some you probably ain't told. Give us a good championship story. Championship story. Man, how they ran out of champagne on championship night, man. We stopped putting kids and shit on each other, man. Like, they only had 12 cases.

16:10Hey, I'm thinking we finna be passed out all night, man. Man, before the end of the night, man, I think I had 40 hours of St. Ives, man. Hey, man, they ran out of champ, man. That's the only thing, man. That's the only thing I remember, man. That's the only thing you remember. I say, man, but no, I can't front, though. That day, though, winning the championship, I can't front. It made me realize how hard it is to win, man. how hard it is to get everybody collectively on one page and guys to buy in and drop ego and it's a lot that go in the winning and i didn't play that much in the time everyone but i played a lot in 2010 run but just looking at both of them and how hard it is and getting there because i know how i feel to lose i feel to win but what i'm saying is the buy-in the buy-in is so key you get what i'm saying yeah about the camaraderie off the court on the court all them guys went ball P went bald.

17:02Man, that's the 82nd unit. Like, we not going bald. We not going bald. So just that alone for them to back in, cut their facial hair, and just be on more serious time when we go out. We pop out. All right, man, come on. Make sure y 'all get y 'all ass up. We going to work out tomorrow. Like, ticket head. That on the lot. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? We going to come to your city. We going to kick y 'all ass. We going to have some fun. And we going to kick it. We going. Hello. Hello. We all doing it with the one team, one goal mindset. And so I think that carries over, man. The team ain't bonding off the court.

17:35Man, that's your secondary family, man. I think that's what helped us, you know, in 08. Man, y 'all was a hell of a team, bro. Hell of a team. Boy. Boy, because y 'all, hey, hey, I know we won seven games with y 'all and y 'all end up winning. After we took y 'all seven, Cleveland took them seven, and then y 'all won it in less than six. So, you know, we kind of hang our hat on that, bro. We didn't have a chance in Boston, but in the A, I'm already known. I'm already known. Hey, I'm still mad at you, bro. You ain't had to do my man Leon Poe like that, man. Oh, hit him with – oh, man. Hey, T-A, T-A, T-A, you know it ain't personal.

18:18It's just business, baby. You already know it. You know what I'm saying. It's how I look at that. But I say he just head came off a two ACL surgery. The killer tried to send him back to the MRI. I'm saying. Hey, T.A., you built your reputation in the NBA by locking people up. If you had to pick one player, bro, in NBA history that you wish you got a chance to guard, tell me, who would it be? I don't want to be so cliché. Mike? Yeah, I was thinking Mike. I'm talking about that 92, Mike. I'm that 93, Mike. Yeah, I'm talking about that one. Not the one when he came back and he took the time off. I'm talking about that early on, Mike, when he was doing all this shit.

19:00Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. T.A., you want some of that smoke? I would have loved it. Because, I mean, I think I would have pretty much stuck him a lot like I stuck Kobe. See, what Kobe, a lot of people don't know is I never let him go right. You know what I'm saying? You ain't going right on me, bro. Because if you go right, you might throw it on my head. Yeah. But if you go left, I know if you go left, you ain't stuck with nothing but that pump fake and that step back or whatever. up. You see what I'm saying? If you taking off like this with that left hand, I might bump you a little bit and contest with my right.

19:34Josh know what I'm talking about. But what I'm saying is, bro, back then, he gave you a little more. He was too exciting back then for the game. And I think I would have loved it. You know what I'm saying? Lock up with that excitement. Oh, yeah. I feel you. Hey, Smooth. If you had a chance, I know you, you know, when you play, you let your man get by you could you know it's just some things you can't teach and elite athleticism i'm like damn man why you let that man beat yourself for the meet him at the rim oh that was purpose that was purpose yeah it was on purpose man dunk on me sometimes i want to see i want to see what you have less is i'm talking about yeah oh that is a skill huh it's a skill you gotta let him feel like sometimes you gotta let him feel like he got it he got you oh yeah let him get a step on you a little bit and And then you just got to go and meet him.

20:26Oh, yeah. You a super elite at that. Hey, T.A., now we're going to go and get to the little elephant that's in the room. You know, you've been in the headlines lately, you know, about what you said about LeBron, about he's an overrated defender. We trying to see, man. Me, the chat, smooth. We want to know what's up. Hey, so let me get this clip, bro. Hold on. So let me show you how this thought out. Because, you know, we in a world of clip, what they call it, clip farming now, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. They got you. Yes, sir. So let me give you a day of Tony Allen, man. I do a local show called Chris Vernon Show.

21:02I'm a guest on there. And it's our Grand City Media team for the Grizzlies. And I attend their podcast every Tuesday. So when I'm coming in, I guess the list had already came out. I'm not too internet savvy. I came in 04. We ain't had Instagram back then. So I ain't too savvy. make a long story short they asked me do i want to comment on this list i'm saying yeah i comment on this they say well you're not you might not be happy because well you ranked so they go through the list and i'm going through the list and as you could tell i was giving people props like ryan our test like yo he should be way higher i'm like dennis ronman yeah he should be number one or like gary payton he should be like i'm giving everybody props so this one coming from no hating type of vibe.

21:46What I was saying was, and it's really just barbershop talk, really. Right, right, right. I thought that once they got that low into the list, I'm like, damn, where am I at? Number 50 or something? That's how I'm thinking in my mind. And so then, Brian came up.

22:06And I'm like, hold on, bro, that man got 45 points. Then, look, last, about two weeks ago, he been shooting at Memphis for a long time. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I ain't going to laugh. Let's bring the whole elephant out. Call it what it is. He been shooting at Memphis the whole time. Right. By the players that come in town, you ain't really trying to kick it at Memphis. Cool, you might want to go get something to eat. But you got to get your sleep and get ready for the greenhouse. That's how it was back in the day. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. It just ain't that. So now you're going to kill our city on the golf course.

22:38Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Not only that, you going to come at my brother and say his award should have been yours? No, I got to say something now. Because the list right here in front of my face is on point now. Because I could have said something when I saw his podcast. So I took it in the run. I said, hold on. Let's be clear. We both on the same amount of teams. Every team he made, I made. Yeah. So you ain't talking to no local joker now. Right, right, right, right, right, right, right. I just felt like, all right, with my job every day, what I got to do, man, to come to this court, man, If I don't come here and make it difficult for the opponent's score, they're going to be looking at T.A.

23:16like, what's your value? Right, right. But my value in that era of basketball was at the point was, don't let them get their average T.A. That's going to help our ball club. Hello. And so if I got to do that night in, night out at limited minutes, he on the court for damn it, 46 minutes. Yeah. You mean to tell me if you got to play defense every minute you on the second to a guy that's going to play occasionally. So I do it better, brother. Well, T.A., T.A., T.A., we're not negating the fact that you do it better. We think you do do it better. But the thing is, LeBron has to do – he has so many damn jobs on the court.

23:55Okay, he got to score the ball. Smooth, I got to assist the ball. Damn, I got to rebound the ball. Hell, I'm leading the team in steals. On top of all that, I got to defend the number one guy the entire game. That's not possible. He can't exert all that energy and 10 of these other jobs. But guess what? But guess what? I'm stepping it. But guess what? I got to do that. And if I don't do that, hey, I'm going to be playing for the hour Bulldogs in the G League. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. And that's understood because it's like shit down. T.A. ain't told all them damn jobs. But if T.A. lock in defensively and that's all you doing all night, oh, yeah, you're going to be better than him in that.

24:35There's no question. You saying he was hiding you on the list? had me on the list. I said, I couldn't believe it because I'm like, damn, hold on. Man, LeBron just greedy. He won all the awards, man. Somebody, damn, bro. T.A., when he done, T.A., he gonna have them all. He gonna have them all, T.A. And one thing I can't say, because I'm locked up with LeBron too. Like, that time he left Cleveland, that was my assignment. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Imagine, I'm not comparing myself to him. He averaged 28-7 and 7. Let's be clear. But what I'm saying, what I did was a few deflections here and there in key moments, a few steals there in key moments, a couple of contested shots where I know he stretched out by my contest.

25:21That's my defense, bro. And not only that, and no disrespect to any guy that didn't average over a dub when I was playing. But if you didn't average a dub, nine times ten, I wasn't sticking you. You see what I'm saying? That's a fact. I ain't not hit that bumping my gum saying no out the mud moment. Hey, man, this is really me on the barbershop. And I'm pretty sure Brian will laugh about this. And, Smooth, don't you be insinuating them black trucks pulling up. I'm running, man. Hey, man. I care about you, man. I just want to do a wellness check on my dog. You know what I'm saying? Hey, T.A., but think about this.

26:00M., you don't think Brian got no valid point, bro? He was first team all defense that year. marcus i'll one defensive player of the year marcus i was second team he ain't got no he got a come on now hey now listen all right so now listen right i don't know why i finished up and vote but we talk about we talk about our peers we talk about our peers yeah man everybody in their mama they saw me that song said bro damn we thought you were gonna get that award bro and get what my boy big mark do he go win the ring and put grin grind on the ring He know. He said, hey, man, I ain't giving you my award, but I stamp was on the ring.

26:40So now Ron ain't finna come up. That's really me and Mark award. Yeah, yeah. Hey, hey, you said if you didn't get it, hell, as long as one of your teammates got you, cool. We in the game. We in the game. Hey, man, y 'all have some hell of a squad for the Memphis Grizzlies, bro. You know, hey, man, we appreciate you for stopping by, bro. I'm going to have to come sit down with you and my boy Z-Bo, man. You know, hey, I got some real stories with me and Z-Bo, bro. Yeah, hey, man, hey, hey, listen. We want both of you brothers on there, man. I had to come up here, man, to do the, hey, podcast so I can set the pick and roll for Out the Mud, man.

Why is it important for the darker part of the Declaration of Independence in the American Revolution, why is it important that Americans know about it? Well, if we don't understand the full context in which our nation was founded, we won't understand the full context in which our nation now finds itself. I'm Rebecca Nagel, citizen of Cherokee Nation. Are you guys big Chiefs fans? Hell yeah. 30:03I'm Emily Oster. I'm an economist and data expert. And I'm Perry Wilson. I'm a medical doctor. And this is our new podcast, Wellness Actually. Because you're getting a staggering amount of health and wellness information nowadays, and some of it is awesome. And some of it is, well, actually bullshit. Fortunately, we're both people who know how to read studies, parse data, and can tell you what's worth trying out and what you can safely ignore. Each episode, we tackle the health news of the week and then take a deeper dive into a misunderstood health and wellness topic like... What's the deal with peptides?

30:37What's the deal with GLP-1s? What's the deal with creatine? What's the deal with cupping? What's the deal with sleep? So join us for a weekly dose of sanity. It might actually be just what the doctor... Or the economist... Ordered. Listen to Wellness Actually on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

31:19Yes, sir. Hey, move. Check this out. Bam out of bio leaves LeBron James off of his all time top five list. Bam Lee brought out, bro. He listened to his top five. Smooth. Hear me out. He got Kobe Bryant. He got Steph Curry. He got Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant and Tim Duncan. What's up with this list, bro? Bam Bam ain't messing with Brian. You got Brian in your top five? Brian probably, he probably mad at Brian ain't coming out of the South Beach and messing with him. Oh man, come on. He let him off his top five because of that? Might be a little salty, man. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, but salt kills snails, not players.

32:05You feelin' what I'm saying? Hello, hello, hello. Run that one more time. I need to say it live for the people in the back. What do you mean? I said, salt kills snails, not players. You know what I'm saying? Hello, hello, hello. Oh, you ain't worried about it. Oh, there's my man go right there. Yes, sir. Hey, there go my boy, Jeremy Pau. That boy on that pimp talk tonight, Jeremy. I don't know what he got. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. That ain't my lane, brother. I stay in my lane. That ain't where I live. Hey, thank you. Thank you for joining us again, brother.

32:34Welcome back. Yes, sir. You know, how you feeling, bro? How you feeling tonight? Man, I'm solid, brother. I was about to go do me a little R &B karaoke. I get a little call. I say, I got to go on here with my man. come on man you know how we get down with that karaoke man you know where i'm going i'm going to karaoke get me on the mic hey listen check this out man bam bam left braun out off his all-time top five list his top five germans kobe bryan stephen curry michael jordan kevin durant and tim duncan german what's up with this list bro this this way you started this what you starting with?

33:11Yeah, yeah, yeah. We getting right to it. That's wild. I don't think he like Bron. Smooth say because he ain't coming to Miami. It's got to be that. Ain't no other reason you leave that man off your top five list. What do you know? You think so? Ain't no other reason. I agree. I agree because I ain't going to lie. If I do a top five, Bron definitely in there. I don't know yet. Bam, he definitely must be salty that, you know, Brian didn't pick the Heat. Jeremy, did you think he was going to the Heat, bro? I thought it was a possibility, but I think, man, since they took them chocolate chip cookies, it was over.

33:51But you ain't have Philly. You ain't have him going to Philly. No, I didn't have him going to Philly, but Philly gonna give him chocolate chip cookies, so he gots to go. Hey, hey, Smooth. Boogie Cousin says Tim Duncan needs to be in everyone's top five. He said, Chad, let's take a listen to what Boogie said. Y 'all, let's listen to it. I don't want to hear no top five without Tim Duncan in it. I respect that, bro. Ladies and gentlemen. That's just how I feel. I think he's one of the most disrespected, fuck the basketball part, just winners of all time. But why do you think? I mean, is it the Old Navy?

34:30Is it the Baggy Fitz? Is it the Birkenstock Sandals? It wasn't sexy. Yeah, it wasn't sexy. You know, he wasn't, you know, as marketable as these other guys. And he's not all – I mean, he's almost like a Jokic. Since he stepped foot in the L, he won. He's done nothing but win. I believe – I may be wrong, but from my knowledge, I think he's the most winningest player of all time. So, if that's not top five, on top of all the accolades that come with it, I don't – They made the playoffs every year, right? He's never had a losing season. Damn near 2010 getting out of the car, bro. He never had a loser.

35:05You know what I mean? That's incredible. Hey, Boogie got some valid thoughts. Smooth, what do you think about that, bro? Yeah, I mean, when he put it in that perspective, you get to throwing those numbers out there. I agree. I mean, he's definitely a guy that is kind of like Steph Curry did. He helped build that San Antonio Spurs franchise, and he helped Popovich become one of those coaches that was respected for it still to this day. He's definitely top five, one of those prototypical fours that was probably the best to ever do it. Oh, for sure. Jeremy, what you got? It's hard to leave him off that list, man, because he did everything you can think of in this game.

35:55And he don't get the luck because he ain't loud, he ain't boisterous, but he get the job done. And there ain't many people that love the hard-working guy that just gets the job done. Y 'all just have one on here, Tony Allen. He don't get the love he deserves. You know what I mean? So that's a part of what it is. But real hoopers know what Tim Duncan did and what he means to the game in terms of bringing people along and teaching them the right way to do it. Yeah, you know what it is, man? It's because he doesn't do it with a flair. You know, he just go out there to big fundamental. He just get it done, bro.

36:28Like, look, I'm going to tell you, I played against a few playoff series against him. So, man, and I think it was 2003 when I first got to Phoenix. Well, that's like my second year in Phoenix. We had Stephon Marbury at the one. We had Penny Hardaway at the two. Sean Marion at the three. I can't remember who was like four and five. But I was backing all these dudes up. But anyway, oh, it was Amari rookie year. And we played against the Spurs in the first round. we were the ac they were one seed bro and you know maury was young but tim couldn't stop him but he couldn't stop tim neither but he was hitting him with basic stuff like just turn around jump hook off the glass boom show it uh up and under bro he was so technical and fundamentally sound like it was it was awesome to watch because guess what when he got it going and then you sit in the double now you got tony parker now you got ginobili now you got bruce born you got all these other guys and he knew how to make those guys better so i know it's hard to beat him out your top five fellas but i think it's preference bro it's definitely preference smooth give me give me your top five uh power forwards man give me give me give me your top five power forwards five power fours i gotta go definitely tim duncan one you putting in one i mean i would yeah yeah i I am, I am, I am, I am, sure.

37:55You got, you got Kevin Garnett. Oh yes, I am. For sure, for sure KG. Man, I gotta go Rashid Wallace. Oh man. That's not any kind of number. I seen Shee give you about 36. That's damn, I said damn, who got Shee? Man, that big pop, they'll fry me. I'm sitting there trying to wait for him to go to the hole. I'm sitting there scrambling, man. That wasn't a good matchup. That wasn't a good matchup. All right, you got Shee. Who else you got? Kevin Shee. You got to go James Worthy. Damn, old school. You got to go old school, Worthy. Yeah. Oh, man. Let me see. And Pete, your pop. I know Pete. Yeah, I gotta go.

38:49Pete was a shooter though. So yeah, you gotta slide him up a little further on up. So, he was definitely a shooter, man. Who would I say the fifth one would be? Man. You had to go like - I'ma have to go Karl Malone. Oh yeah, oh yeah, okay. Jeremy, give me your four. Give me your five, power fours. In no order, it's gotta be Tim Duncan. I don't know how he didn't say Charles Barkley because what he was doing. He was. He was. I'm going to take Carl Malone. Give me Charles, man. This is my list, brother. This is my list. Don't step on my list. Hey, wait. Look, I'm going to make a trade, man. I'm going to trade all the bottom there, man.

39:33Get him on out of there for Mr. Barkley, Mr. Chuck himself. I got to go. I probably got to throw KG in there because of what he meant to his teams. I stepped on that court. I think you're missing dirt a little bit, too. Ooh. And I got to round this list off with somebody. This is a wild, wild number, but he wasn't a scorer, but he changed his teams. Dennis Rodman. Oh, man. Well, you grew up a Chicago kid, so it kind of makes sense. I'm saying back then, Jeremy, when you was watching the game, did you really understand it? Like, how old were you? Hell no, I didn't understand what was going on. I just, he made a lot of noise and he colored his hair, I didn't know what was going on, but as I got older and was able to understand, man, that man meant everything to every team he played for Oh my goodness, I know MJ like a god in Chicago, bro, so growing up there, I could imagine, you know, you being immersed in it because as a kid out of Little Rock German, I ain't missing no games on WGN I'm catching every game every night you know what I mean?

40:41Absolutely Bulls was my favorite team, hey, until I know the chat gonna kill me with that too, but that's okay. What's that? The chat gonna kill me putting Dennis Rodney in there. I gotta put the mailman in there. Hey, bro. Smooth. The Bulls was my favorite team. And then when Orlando got Penny, that was like my first NBA game I ever went to. My best friend, BG, his pops. His pops took me, him, and my other best friend, Vaught. Took us to our first NBA game. It was in Memphis. Orlando was playing against the Bulls. in Memphis. Scotty Pippen played for the Bulls. You know what I mean? Penny played for Orlando.

41:19He from Memphis. Oh, man. That was my first NBA game, bro. It was crazy. I get it. I get it. Check me out. LeBron compares himself to the Rolling Stones. Chad, let's take a listen to LeBron. Us in sports, there's always conversations like, when is he going to He needs to retire. He's this he's this age. He's that age, but but why but why? Why are we trying to force people that still doing what they do at a high level? Why are we trying to force the narrative of it's time to retire? Look at like guys like Bruce Springsteen and you know some of the greatest musicians They're still on tour the Stones.

42:03I just watched this still on there. They've been on tour for 50 60 years And no one's telling them hey don't come to our city and go you know do a tour so it's like you know if we still are dedicating ourselves to the craft if we are still giving to the sport if we're not disrespecting the game or just you know we're giving everything that we have to the sport and we're still driving revenue as well why not why not still play it if you still love it so i'm just trying to you know squeeze as much of the juice out of it as possible

42:38Jeremy, tell me what you think, man. You like his mentality, bro? I can't be mad at that. He can't play no more. I'm older and still playing right now. No one's retired has ever told me, hey, man, retirement's great. They say play. Quiet confidence. It's not what you see. It's what you feel. A suit tailored just for you. It might actually be just with the doctor. or The Economist ordered. Listen to Wellness Actually on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

46:25Until you can't play anymore. So do what you do, bro. You're still averaging 20. Why would you sit? Do what you do. I'm on this side. I ain't gonna talk about the Rolling Stones, but I'm on this side. Smooth, what'd you think, Smooth? I mean, I agree with him. I mean, I think we had a, We had a discussion about this a couple of days ago. We were talking about how he's going to be missed once he decides to make that decision to retire. And like he said, if he's continued to help drive the revenue up with the sport of basketball and the NBA, and he's not disrespecting the game when it comes to playing, his possessions being played on both ends of the floor, I think that, you know, he does deserve to make a decision into whenever he wants to retire because, I mean, averaging 20-plus points, I don't think that that deserves him having a conversation about him being retired or anything like that.

47:24No, I agree with y 'all, man. I think you should play or if you're producing at a high level like he still is at 41, 42 years old, bro. Define the odds. I want to see it. Defeat them. Defeat the odds, bro. I want to see somebody walk that fine line. I want to see Bron play till he 45. Can he still play till he 45 at a high level? So I agree with him, bro. They wasn't doing that with Tom Brady. They was just trying to figure out, is he coming back? Yeah. It wasn't. It wasn't. It wasn't. It wasn't, man. Look, man. We tired of him. Look, man. You need to go and get on out of here. It was never that.

48:01We always appreciated what Tom Brady brought to the game of football, just like we need to appreciate what LeBron is bringing to the game of basketball, for sure. Absolutely. Absolutely. Because, like I always say, bro, he's done so much for the game. And sometimes, man, when you've won so much in life, and we've watched this man grow up since he was, what, 17, 18 years old? He's been under the microscope. Really, before that, though, they was clocking him in high school. I say 14, 15. Think about that, smooth. Like, you had to walk that fine line, bro. And you've been under this microscope, Jeremy, your whole entire career, bro.

48:39And not only did you meet expectations, you exceeded them. Come on, bro. What are we talking about? So it's kind of hard for me to kind of sit and listen and hear people down talk that man. Because, damn, man, when you run his accolades down, and really damn his accolades. I mean, just who he is as a person. I've had a chance to really, you know, spend time with him and playing in the USA. So I spent like a month and a half, two months with him. I'm like, man, he's just a great down-to-earth dude. You know what I mean? And he's been fortunate enough, bro, and blessed enough to have these skills to where he can put them on display.

49:18And we all witness like we've done, man. I want to see him keep striving for greatness. I want to see him keep pushing the needle. Hey, man, I want to see the man win another title. I ain't going to lie to y 'all, bro. As much as I'm an Atlanta Hawks fan, I want to see Philly do good, too, bro. I ain't going to lie to you. I want to see Philly do good, too. There's a lot of complaints to do good. They're going to be just fine over there. But I'm saying, Jeremy, how long realistically do you think he'll be able to continue to play? I mean, I think he's going to be 42, right, in December. I think he got two.

49:59I think he got this one and another one after this one coming up. So you saying he'll finish in 25, he'll do 25 years? I think, yeah. I think the two years that he signed in Philly will be his farewell tour for the next two years, I guess you could say. Smooth, what do you think? You think he's just two, or you think he gonna push past that? I think he win one this year. I think he gonna retire. Do you really? Yeah, I think he might chop that one, or that two into one. Man, that's what I'm gonna tell y 'all. I think this year, probably gonna be up with man listen i think it's a lot i think it's a lot harder than than what people really think meaning like once you're done playing the game bro and you still in good shape and you ain't got no injuries and all that see as we as we age the reason why we don't really like playing the game because it hurt it hurt too damn bad you know what i mean you your feet hurting your knees hurt your hip hurt your back go to hurting But if you're able to keep yourself in great shape and keep that great mobility as we age, bro, and you can continue to play at a high level, man, keep playing, bro.

51:06I think, dude, I definitely think he's going to get 25 for sure. I think he's going to play this year and next year smooth, regardless of what happened. Standing around out of the ring, that's tough. I don't know, man. You say what? Yeah. If they win it this year and standing around out of that ring, I don't blame him if you do stay, because you got to run it back. Hey, Bron might go to another damn team and go play for somebody else and win and try to win. Hey, listen, listen, because y 'all know they always start, you know, every time somebody bring up an argument about who the best player ever played a game, obviously, MJ the GOAT, Bron the GOAT, but it's, you know, it's debatable, right?

51:50And I just think LeBron knows if he can get to six like I mean if he win one that shit smooth they give him five boy please you don't think he gonna try to get six Jeremy you don't think so 100 % he trying to get six he told everybody chasing the goals he ain't no way he don't try and get to six he can't help it bro I mean the man award number 23 his whole damn career man ain't no secret you know what I mean but guess what it don't make him no bad brother you know he's still a good you know what I mean don't make him no bad brother absolutely Hey, check me out. Former Lakers assistant, Lionel Holland shares that LeBron James and Anthony Davis never worked out together.

52:32According to Lionel Hollins, LeBron say, LeBron say, you have to get up a little early to come work out with me. uh uh he's saying that he's saying he's saying that ain't you know he ain't finna basically if you ain't getting up at three four in the morning man you mean you ain't gonna never get no workout together what y 'all think about him and ad not not ever working out shit it worked out didn't it they got i mean they had a ring i guess but hold What I'm saying is, Jeremy, imagine if AD would have stayed healthy. Obviously, he probably never would have got traded because of his productivity that he was given.

53:17Given the Lakers, him and Braun was a two-headed monster, bro. You couldn't stop that. A healthy AD is a top 10 player in the NBA consistently. Yeah, every year. That health is heavy, though. Why was he healthy, though? Why was he healthy? It wasn't because he was healthy in the morning. I wasn't guilty. Why wasn't? I don't think that's why.

53:44Whatever you do at 5 in the morning, I can do the same thing at 10. Hey, tell me something. I know me and Jeremy worked out a lot in the summer. Smooth, did you have anybody that you worked out with in the summer? I know we got in a few times in the summer. I was like Giannis. You know what I'm saying? I didn't really want to work out with NBA players, man. Like, what were you doing? You know what I'm saying? I worked out with Edon Ravine. You remember Edon Ravine? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I used to work out with him in the summertime. So I used to fly him to, like, Atlanta, L.A., you know what I'm saying?

54:19Work out at UCLA. And I did hoop with NBA players when we did those pickup games and stuff like that. But as far as, like, individual working out, I didn't want to – I didn't want to work out with nobody because it's like, Like, why would I want to show them what I'm working out? You know what I'm saying? What I'm working out on. Yeah, and you know what, Jeremy? You know, a lot of cats, bro, like, and I was one of them, you know, obviously the dudes that I was working out with, I kind of been through the fires with them. Like, it was high school, college, you know, then we, you know, we, we, we was, I was in the pros or we was in the pros.

54:52But a lot of cats don't like working out with people, man, giving away their secrets and their gems. You know what I'm saying? They love it now, though. They love it now. They love it because they all got the same training. They all doing the same little move. Is that because it's a different breed now, Smooth? You know what I mean? They all spamming the same little move. I assume. Like, Jeremy, I'm gonna keep it real. Like, think about when we really coming up. I'm saying before we got to the pros, bro. We ain't had no trainers, bro. No. Like, everybody got a trainer now. Think about it. Jeremy, what you was doing?

55:23How was you getting better? Pick up and watching. Trying to tell you. And watching. Playing against older players. You're playing with your brother friends and stuff like that. I know everybody know about hoops in Chicago. I was 16 at hoops. Oh, yeah. Facts. Oh, yeah. Facts. Come up to hoops. My brother got me a car. Drive up to hoops. Where is that? I don't know how to get that. You know, GPS at this time. Right. They tell you the street name. Look, two lights and turn left. And then after the day, you have to remember all that stuff. I get in the gym and it's all pros. Michael Jordan and all these pros.

55:55And out of nowhere. Margot. Hold on. Hold on. So when you was a kid, you saying you went to the gym and MJ was in there? 16. Michael Jordan used it. First time I seen Michael, Michael had his hoodie tucked. I said, that's the coolest nigga in the world.

56:15Yeah, he had a crew neck tucked in. I said, yo, I got to tuck my crew. I got to tuck in. That's what you do. I got to do it. Hey, we always talk about the aura. You know, when you see him, bro, it's kind of like, I always say you seem like he's levitating. hey it was scary joe first time it was scary but look check this out smooth you know i was a brand jordan athlete for man like for like a decade so you know early in those years you know we should take trips you know do vacations meetups you know what i mean you should be all that bro it was so many commercials out back then and i was always in awe you know what i mean but i always kept it together you know what i mean like i always kept my kind of took you know what i mean i ain't really fanboy like that but i'm like damn you know what i'm saying sitting back and having conversations with him bro and those are uh those are times that you know i'll never forget bro you know because i grew up watching this man idolizing this man and then getting a chance to be a brand joint athlete bro that was super super dope so jim i couldn't imagine being from chicago in chicago at 16.

57:19joe imagine imagine going to the manhouse and playing pickup oh you was going over there hooping. Listen, my AAU coaches, Antoine Walg was my AAU coach. You know they were tight. They called me, yo, we going here to play. I got a car. I drive all the way out there. I get to the gate, the big ass 23 on the gate. I'm excited. I'm locked in already. But they're like, yo, he's not going to play, but we playing at his house. I get in, park, get in the gym. I'm at the far end of the gym and I turn around and that black walk in and I say, oh, Oh, shit. And he'd get out there and play. He'd play. I kid you not, I get a backdoor lob.

58:02He's guarding me on the way I get a backdoor lob. I miss it. Kid you not, he made fun of me. He literally told me, wouldn't have missed that if you had on Jordans. Oh, yeah, that's him. That's him, Smooth. That's him. You can't come around him with nothing else on, man. Nothing else. He going to talk about you. Boy, he going to talk about you. He going to talk about you, bro. But I'm telling y 'all, man, he was a pleasure to be around. Super motivating. You know, teaching us the business of basketball. And, man, we had Bibb on yesterday, bro. We used to do these meetups, Moe. And, like, they would show us stuff that's about to come out.

58:39And they'd have all these different shoes, Jeremy. You know, all these different Jordans. And, like, they'll let you take a pair of two with you. You know what I mean? Man, Bibby taking 20 pairs of shoes. You know what I'm saying? man. Right. Hey, Bill was OD with it. But rightfully so, because, you know, him and Ray Allen pretty much kind of started to jump brand. But yeah, I'll be a big with spoiled with it, boy. Hey, give me give me give me one of your hardest workouts in the summer, man, prepared for the when using the NBA. Give me one of your hardest workouts. Man, I don't know if it was the hardest.

59:14I gave you one of my most discouraging workouts. And it was it was it was a weak moment for me because, you know, my brother, my brother's a shooter. He shoots the ball. We got to go around, make 8 out of 10, then 9 out of 10 coming back. He missed the first time I went. I didn't make it the first spot. That boy didn't miss again. I was mad the entire workout. I was mad. I'm like, yo, I'm not doing this. I weren't doing this anymore. If that boy can't do nothing else, boy, he can shoot the leather off that thing. You hear me? You hear me? Smooth, smooth. What's one of your toughest workouts bro them sand dudes yeah i used to go to the rainy canyon so like that in la oh yeah yeah when i when i used to live out there in la i do the rainy canyon i do it twice around but before that i get up i go to this guy named gunner you ever you ever met gunner uh-uh i ain't never met gunner gunner used to work out all the you know i met him through um who was it, Danny Ferry.

1:00:16Yeah. Yeah, he went to Duke. So when I went out there to meet Danny Ferry, he introduced me to Gunner. Gunner worked out a lot of players like Tom Brady, all kind of other players, entertainers. So I get up in the morning, I work out with him. Then I go to the Run You Canyon, do Run You Canyon for about, like I do it twice. Then I might go hoop. Then if I don't hoop, I'll do another workout. Then I'll go work out at like eight o 'clock. So I have like three workouts like every day during the summertime. Yeah. Yeah. Man, man. You know, you want to hang out at night time too. So you know what I'm saying?

1:00:58Oh yeah. You have to get up and do it all over again. Yeah, all right. I already, hey, burning both ends of the candle, potty. Come on, man. Yeah, I already know. I know bro, hey. Cause look, look, look. Tryin' to max it out. You know, we ain't got too much time. We just try to max it out. That's it bro. I remember Jeremy used to be with me. We used to be down there in Miami at Legacy Fit with my boy Manning out there. Training like a mud, Smoothie. Isn't that gym with that, it's kind of small. Got that little turf on it. Oh, that boy, he done bought the whole, he done bought the whole damn block now, Smoothie.

1:01:34Oh yeah. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. That gym used to be lit, boy. Oh, I threw up in that gym. And that's the plan. Yeah, he been trying to do it to you. He one of them trainers. Yeah, you walk in there. Are you a professional athlete? You supposed to be like something. Are you come train with me? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Boy, you finna be calling Earl in like 15 minutes. I worked out with Rondo when I went down there with Rondo. I'm like, oh, home's trippy. Oh, yeah, he ain't playing. He ain't playing. He was something different. y 'all give me a second give me a second give me a second 8 a.m we in that gym right after that basketball later that day and we working out again after that yeah i'm young at the time all i'm gonna be around is and learn as much as i can it was a good time for sure hey look we got another special guest
