In short

Cindy Gallop argues that easy access to hardcore porn plus society’s reluctance to talk openly about sex turns porn into “sex education by default,” shaping boys’ and men’s expectations, anxieties, relationships, and self-image. She promotes Make Love Not Porn as a real-world, consent-focused alternative and says the mission is to help end rape culture by modeling loving, communicative sex and female sexual agency. She also discusses strangulation during sex, claiming it’s increasingly common among teens and is harmful, with no “safe” way to do it.

Guest background

Cindy Gallop is a New York-based entrepreneur/speaker with 40 years in brand building/marketing/advertising. She is half English, half Malaysian Chinese, grew up in Brunei, and has lived as a “global citizen.” She founded Make Love Not Porn after personal experiences dating younger men and noticing porn-like “behavioral memes” in bed.

Key claims/examples

She launched a small site (makelovenotporn.com) and a TED talk in 2009 that went viral (“come on my face”). She cites parents reporting early, frank sex/porn conversations help kids feel safe discussing porn. She gives examples of parents gifting subscriptions to under-18s and of couples using the site after prostate-cancer-related erectile dysfunction. She claims men often cry after watching, and that the platform uses “real bodies” and a new vocabulary (e.g., “soft serves,” “downtown,” “lick job”) to counter porn’s male-lens scripts. She says strangulation is linked to porn culture and cites research figures (e.g., 50% of 16–17-year-olds). She also introduces MakeLoveNotPorn.Academy as a “Google of sex ed,” human-curated and age-appropriate, to counter deplatformed sex education resources.

0:00Elliott:Hello, beloved listeners. Thanks for joining us for this fantastic episode with Cindy Gallop. Just a quick warning that there's going to be swearing in this episode right from the outset. Enjoy. Hello and a very warm welcome to To Be A Boy with me, Joeli Brearley. And me, Elliott Ray. Today's guest is the unstoppable force that is Cindy Gallop, the woman who dared to take on the commercial porn industry with the website, movement and now Academy, make love not porn. Cindy Gallop is an entrepreneur, a speaker, a cultural fire starter and a badass bitch that couldn't give a flying fuck what you think about her.

0:41Elliott:Today we're talking about something huge. The role porn is playing in the lives of men and boys, how it shapes their expectations, their anxieties, their relationships and their sense of self. We're going to go all in on this one. They'll be swearing, they'll be sexually explicit language because Cindy Gallop is not somebody you invite on to have a polite conversation. It is someone you invite on when you want to hear the raw, unfiltered truth. Cindy Gallop, welcome to the podcast. Thrilled to be here. We are so, so looking forward to this conversation. Just to pre-warn everybody, there definitely will be swearing.

1:19Elliott:There definitely will be sexually explicit language. So if there are young ears around, you may not want them to hear all of this. Maybe put your headphones in for a bit. Let's start the beginning because although the focus today is going to be on boys, men and porn and the amazing movement that you have built, I really want listeners to know about Cindy Gallop because when they hear about you, if they haven't heard about you before, they will become as obsessed with you as I am and many of my friends are. So take me back to younger Cindy in the moment you realised you didn't want to be in a relationship ever.

1:56Sure. So for our listeners, I am half English, half Malaysian Chinese. My father was English, my mother was Malaysian. And I was born in the UK, but I grew up in Brunei in Borneo. I now live and work in New York. I'm a global citizen. And my background is 40 years working in brand building, marketing and advertising, which I always say is very good experience what I do now, because I've spent 40 years working in the business of getting people to do things that they originally had no intention of doing. And, you know, I am somebody who has never, ever wanted to be married. I have never wanted children.

2:35Very glad that I always knew that as opposed to finding out the hard way by having them. And, you know, I realized over time that, honestly, I just adore being single. I'm not a relationship person. I cannot wait to die alone. I date younger men casually and recreationally. and you know to your question Jolie I obviously I arrived at all of this through the realization that comes with growing older and in my youth I was absolutely subject to what we all are as girls and women which is from the moment we're born we're told our entire life is a search for the one everything around us you know the way the way our parents talk about our futures every message in popular culture tells us that, you know, this is what your life must be a search for.

3:22And so, you know, I was totally susceptible to that, you know, that syndrome where, you know, as a teenager, early 20s, you go to every social event, I'm going to speak heteronormatively because I'm straight, you go to every social event going, will he be there? Now, that is so goddamn time-wasting. Because first of all, what that means is you spend hours on your makeup, on your choice of outfit, angsting about it, then you go to the social event. This cultural dynamic forces you to compete with other women. You know, that's a dynamic that I deplore. And at the end of the night, you know, you schlep home going, oh, well, he wasn't there tonight, maybe next time.

4:02But at some point in my early 30s, I just went, fuck this for a game of soldiers, I'm not looking for the one anymore. And oh my God, the liberation. I would go to social events and just enjoy myself. And so that was just very, very freeing. And as I say, over time, I also realized I really am one of those people who is happiest on their own. And so I encourage everyone to take a long hard look inside yourself and ask what would really make me happy because it may not be what your parents want you to do it may not be what all your friends are doing around you simultaneously it may not be what popular culture tells you you should want yeah I think

4:50Elliott:that's so liberating I've heard you say this before I found it so actually upsetting that I had spent so much of my youth going to events waiting for the one and what a complete waste of my life that had been and I vividly remember going to events and the person that I really like not turning up and it ruining my night and not enjoying my friends not finding other ways of having a great time and then all of the time wasting as you say putting on makeup choosing outfits how freeing it would have been to have heard you say that to me from the age of 14 so I really hope that other girls get to hear you say that because even if you do want to get married and have children I still think that hunt for the one as if there is such a thing is such a repressive force on you as a human being and makes you less happy gives you less time less opportunities all of that so thank you for just saying that so candidly can we can we talk a bit about uh your what was the driver for make love not porn because you talked about having sexual relationships with young men the fact that you found that they were performing porn at you rather than enjoying having sex with you and that that really was a trigger for the amazing movement that you have built can you tell us a bit more about that sure and and and you know I will just explain, Julie, that Make Love Not Porn happened as a complete accident.

6:24I didn't intentionally set out to do anything I very bizarrely find myself doing now. And actually dating younger men happened by complete accident too. And what I mean by that is I used to run an ad agency here in New York. And 23 years ago, we were asked to pitch for an online dating brand that was coming out of the UK, wanted to launch in the US. And when you pitch for a client's business, you have to experience the client's product and the entire competitive landscape. So we all had to online date. And this was 23 years ago, and none of us at the agency ever had because it wasn't a thing back then.

6:56And the rest of my pitch team were all already married, living with someone, dating. They all went online as fake personas. I went, got to do this for business reasons. Why not do it for real? Why not find out what this whole online dating thing is all about? So posted my profile across a bunch of sites, honest about everything, including my age. Got a ton of responses. 75 % of which were from younger men, and the majority of those were from much younger men. And I had absolutely not considered this as a dating strategy. But when I got this response, I went, wow, okay, hadn't thought about that works for me.

7:33So that's how I began dating younger men, been doing it very happily for the past 22 years, 23 years. But that was how, and this would have been, gosh, 18, 19 years ago. I began realising that I was encountering an issue that would honestly never have crossed my mind if I had not encountered it so very intimately and personally. I realised I was experiencing what happens when two things converge. And I want to stress the dual convergence because I find most people think it's only one thing. I realised that I was encountering what happens when today's total freedom of access to hardcore porn online meets our society's equally total reluctance to talk openly and honestly about sex.

8:24It's when those two factors converge that porn becomes sex education by default in not a good way. So I found myself encountering a number of sexual behavioral memes in bed. I went, whoa, I know where that behavior is coming from. Those moves look very familiar to me. I thought, gosh, if I'm experiencing this, other people must be as well. I didn't know that because 18 years ago, nobody was talking about this. No one was writing about it. This was me in isolation as a naturally action-oriented person going, I'm going to do something about this. So nearly 17 years ago now, purely as a little side venture, I put up on No Money, a tiny clunky website at makelovenotporn.com that in its original form was kind of a public service announcement.

9:14The construct was porn world versus real world. Here's what happens in the porn world. Here's what really happens in the real world. I launched Make Love Not Porn at the TED conference in 2009. I became the only TED speaker to utter the words, come on my face on the TED stage. The talk went viral as a result. And it drove this extraordinary global response to my tiny website that I had never anticipated. Thousands of people wrote to me from all around the world, young and old, men and female, straight and gay, pouring their hearts out, telling me things about their sex lives and their porn watching habits they'd never told anyone before.

9:54And I realized I'd uncovered a huge global social issue. And so that was the point at which I went, my God, I now have a personal responsibility. I have to take Make Love Not Porn forwards in a way that will make it much more far-reaching, helpful and effective. And that was when I turned it into the business that it is today.

10:14Elliott:Isn't it so interesting that people were so desperate to talk about their porn watching habits that they were willing to just email a stranger, somebody they'd never met before and tell you in gory detail exactly what they were doing? I always remember, I mean, honestly, that avalanche of email coming to me day after day was just, it was extraordinary. I remember a man writing to me, and people wrote screeds, and this man wrote a very long email. And he said at the end of it, you know, it is an indictment of how messed up our society is about sex, that I'm writing all of this at the age of 37 to a woman I've never met, simply because she's the only person I've ever heard be honest about this.

10:54Elliott:yeah that is I mean I grew up in a my mum was very open with me about sex and talked to me from a very young age about absolutely everything and you know encouraged me to investigate my own body as well from quite a young age so I found that at school people would come to me and ask me questions like I remember a girl coming to me and saying somebody's just mentioned a blowjob and I don't know what a blowjob is will you tell me and I explained in detail but then I got into trouble because she went home and told her mum and then the mum called the school and said there's a girl at school talking about blowjobs but but but but jodie that is exactly what should be happening you know i remember um i met a woman at ted in 2009 when i gave my talk because we sat together at lunch afterwards and she said to me oh my god i have three kids never thought about this i'm not going to make sure i educate them we became very good friends and and so over the years you know she shared with me how she was making sure that she educated her children because she said, I know what disinformation is distributed in the playground.

11:58I'm going to send my kids to school absolutely spreading accurate information. And it's brilliant that you were doing that.

12:05Elliott:Yeah, until I got into trouble for it. But I have friends now who have teenage sons and are very reluctant to have conversations with them about sex and I'm always trying to encourage them I say I know it's awkward but and they probably won't even say anything but at least if you just sit them down and say what needs to be said they absorb it they take it in and it's much better that you're having that conversation with them and telling them the truth rather than them finding the information out on porn if you Cindy if you had a son who was at primary school age what conversations would you be having with them now about porn?

12:44So, Jolie, parents and teachers began reaching out to me from day one of Make Love Not Porn, which is why I know we're going to come on to talk about it, which is why I came up with the idea of MakeLoveNotPorn.Academy. But I've basically been giving parents advice for all of those years. And there are two key pieces of advice I give them, which is absolutely what, you know, I will be doing myself. So the first one is, today, you cannot begin talking to a child about sex too early. And when I say, I don't mean literally talk about sex. What I mean is, the very first time your child asks where babies come from, or plays with their genitals, begins masturbating, the most important thing isn't even what you say as much as how you say it.

13:31Never, ever get visibly flustered. You know, never get embarrassed, never shut them up, change the topic, leave the room. Instead, answer them calmly, straightforwardly and honestly, because the moment you do that, you open up a channel communication between them and you on this topic that will be there for them for the rest of their lives. I'm not a parent by choice, as you've heard me say. But what I do know is that every parent wants more than anything else for their child to be happy. And this area will impact your child's happiness more than almost anything else. And then the second piece of advice I give is today, when you talk to your child about sex, no matter how early, you must also at the same time talk to your child about porn.

14:13And this is much easier to do than most parents think, because all you do is you say a version of what I'm about to share with you, and you dial it up or down depending on the age of the child. So you go, so darling, we've just talked about sex. And you know how together we watch movies and videos and cartoons where things happen that aren't real. There are also movies and videos about sex, and they're not real either. And because of that, they can be quite confusing. So we would rather you did not watch them till you're older. But if anyone ever shows you anything like that, or you stumble across it, come and talk to me, come and talk to us, I, we can explain it.

14:52that's all you have to say you can end the conversation like that because just by saying that you've done two very important things the first is you've set up in your child's mind when they stumble across porn as they will it's not real and the second is come and talk to me about it you'll want them to do that because what they stumble across is likely to be utterly

15:12Elliott:traumatizing and i can say with absolute seriousness that that works it really does work being having really frank conversations with your children from a young age about sex when I my eldest son has encountered pornography he was 10 at the time and he came and he talked to me about it and brilliant brilliant I could see there was a direct link between me being really honest and frank with him from a very young age about sex to the fact that he felt comfortable I mean it took him a while it was a week or so after he'd seen it he came to me in the end and said I've seen something that's really disturbed me.

15:54Elliott:And so we could have a really good conversation about it. My God, that is just absolutely fantastic. That is precisely what we want. But because, Jodie, you know, I wish more parents understood that it is early sex education that preserves your child's innocence, not the opposite. The sooner you talk to them about sex openly and honestly, the sooner you educate them fully, the longer they will keep their innocence. Not talking about sex is what takes that innocence away because other people will absolutely do that removal of innocence for you. Such a powerful point because there is the idea that if we introduce these conversations early, we're going to sexualize our children and they're going to run off and have underage sex.

16:38And I think that point is so powerful. Actually, if you need the conversation, introduce it early, you're preserving. I've learned from that. Thank you.

16:47Elliott:and I think it's also important for parents to understand that you can have conversations with your children not just about sex very basic conversation about sex but I have also talked to my children now about oral sex they are 12 and 9 and I actually had a conversation with my son about strangulation who is 12 the other day which we'll come on to because I really want to talk to about strangulation and porn but I did sit my sons down and said because my eldest was about to go to secondary school and I explained to him what a blowjob was and he didn't know what to say eventually he said that is disgusting um you won't think so one day yeah exactly I did almost say that and then thought no we'll just leave that there but um theory was you're gonna go to secondary school and people are going to be talking about this at secondary school so I want you to hear it from me I want you to know exactly what they're talking about when they say the words blowjob which you are going to hear very very soon when you go to secondary school and actually if I can just um chip in on on on this topic um Joni something I found very interesting is so for years parents have bought their teenage children subscriptions to make love not porn you know they write and tell us I want my kids to see what happy healthy loving sexual relationships actually look like.

18:05In the past year, those messages have become way more frequent and way more desperate. So a mother wrote to us a little while back and said, I've just discovered my 12-year-old son is watching Pornhub. I would much rather he watch Make Love Not Porn. I know he's underage. Can we find a workaround? Now, at Make Love Not Porn, we are more legal than legal. You know, we're for 18 and over. We are fully Ofcom, OSA compliant, all of that. But our policy is parental judgment trumps that. As a parent, you know what's right for your child. As a parent, you are free to join MakeLoveNotPorn as an adult.

18:40You can then gift a subscription to anybody you want. So that mother has now gifted a subscription to a 12-year-old son. Another mother wrote to us and said, I have three teenage sons. I want to gift them all subscriptions. Do you have a family plan? I said to my team, oh my God, we have to produce a family plan. And actually, I wrote a great article in the Times in the UK earlier this year about the importance of talking to kids about sex. She interviewed a mother in her article who said, my 12 year old son was about to go off to boarding school. I knew he'd grow up very quickly there. I bought him a subscription to make love not porn.

19:20She said, I want to get out ahead of what was going to happen in the door. You know, she said, this is an island of good, healthy sex in the world that really needs it. And, you know, I love this because, you know, we would never receive those messages when we launched 13 years ago. This is how clear sighted parents now are about what their children are encountering and how much we are the solution. And I want to speak to this very straightforwardly because it always rather entertains me when people talk about watching porn. Nobody's watching porn, they're wanking. OK, this is not entertainment to watch, it's entertainment you masturbate to.

19:53And when children stumble across porn at an early age, what can be very confusing is that it's entirely possible to watch something that horrifies you and have a physiological reaction to it. You can watch something that is traumatizing and you can feel sexually aroused. What we get turned on by and what we masturbate to shapes our sexual script. And I can tell you that at Make Love Not Porn, we have 13 years of proof of concept that we are able to reshape sexual scripts to arouse through the power of love, intimacy and human connection. And that is why what we are, you know, the badly needed documentary to porn's Hollywood movie is so important and necessary in this world.

20:44And it's also, by the way, why it is literally criminal. And I say this because our mission is to help end rape culture. that we cannot get the funding and the support that we deserve it is absolutely criminal I'm so

20:57Elliott:glad you articulated it that way because that's why this movement is so vital and I've already said to my son my 12 year old son when you start watching porn which you will I will tell me and I will get you a subscription I didn't say to make love not porn because he wouldn't know what I was talking about but I said I know places where you can watch porn and it it will be safe and people will not be hurting each other and they will be enjoying themselves. Absolutely. I mean, tell us a bit about why you think it's so important and what you get from watching couples have real sex compared to porn, what the difference is.

21:34Elliott:Sure. And by the way, given the theme and title of this podcast, I should say that boys and men have also been reaching out to me for years. And I've had a lot of conversations with young teenage boys, as well as young men and men of all ages. So what is really interesting is I designed MakeLoveNotPorn to be fully diverse and inclusive. And we are. Our members, our MakeLoveNotPorn stars, as we call our contributors, are all ages 18 to 80, literally. All racist ethnicities were a global platform. Male, female, trans, non-binary, straight, LGBTQ, asexual. But in the 13 years we've operated, we have discovered that MakeLoveNotPorn is especially a revelation to men.

22:16of all ages. More men send us grateful emails, neither appreciative comments, anybody else, because we are something utterly unique that men will find nowhere else on the internet, which is a safe space where men can be and watch other men being open, emotional, and vulnerable around sex. You would not believe the number of men who write to us regularly and say, I just watched my first video on Make Love Not Porn and afterwards I cried. And by the way, we also hear this from women, but it's especially noteworthy from men because I've said for years, I wish society understood the opposite of what it thinks is true.

22:57Women enjoy sex just as much as men and men are just as romantic as women. Yet neither gender is allowed to openly celebrate either of those facts. We would all be so much better off if they were. I picked up a great Twitter exchange a few years back between two men. The first man had tweeted, that's a joke, hey guys, got this really weird fetish. I've got this kink where I want to watch porn where people are honest, loving, loyal, decent and really like each other. Hit me up with your hottest things please. And another man replied and said there's this website called Make Love Not Porn where you can watch real couples making love.

23:33He said I watched a video where the woman said to her man, I love you, while they're making love. He said, sincerely, I cried when I heard that. We are one of the solutions to toxic masculinity. We are the antithesis of Andrew Tate. And that's why, as I say, our mission ultimately is to help end rape culture globally. Now, that may sound like a very big mission, but as I said, we have 13 years of proof of concept at a micro level. We end rape culture by doing something very simple no one else is doing. We show you how wonderful Great, consensual, communicative sex is in the real world. Our social sex videos role model, good sexual values and good sexual behavior.

24:16And the important part is we make all of that aspirational versus what you see in porn and popular culture. We are showcasing the kind of sex everybody wants to have. Great sex born out of love, intimacy and human connection. one man left a comment on a video saying this video makes want to be a better man in the bedroom and in life you know seeing what sex can be like in this context is transformative and Cindy so I signed up this morning market research purposes and when you were talking about men really appreciating and enjoying the website on there I saw you know a variety of different body shapes and people from all walks of life is there something in I'm talking from a man's perspective here the men seeing themselves in in the videos you know on Pornhub and traditional porn sites obviously the men have ripped abs six packs six foot seven whereas on Make Love Not Porn you get like the average male body do you get that kind of feedback as well that they they see themselves physically yes absolutely so as you've said Elliot you know at Make Love Not Porn we celebrate real world everything real world bodies real world hair real world penis size real world breast size real world vulvas.

25:31And that is critically important because you can talk body positivity all you like. You can preach self-love till you're blue in the face. At the end of the day, nothing makes us feel great about our own bodies like seeing people who are no one's idea of aspirational body types getting turned on by each other, desiring each other, having an amazing time in bed. In a world where every message popular culture sends us tells us, you are not hot, not desirable, unless you are this skinny, six pack abs, look like this. Our members write to us all the time and say, you made me feel better about my own body.

26:08You know, one man wrote to us and said, my girlfriend and I now feel able to be more open and central with each other because you made each of us feel better about our own bodies. And, you know, that's not the only thing we're making men feel better about. So, you know, I designed Make Love Not Porn to make it easier for everybody to talk openly and honestly about sex. And everything in our platform is designed to further that goal. We at MakeLoveNotPorn, we are building a new vocabulary for real world sex. The reason that's important is because we don't talk about sex, we have no socially acceptable language with which to do so.

26:46The language of porn has rushed in to fill that gap. That is not good for a number of reasons, including that, as you would expect, you know, in a male dominated industry, the language of porn is predominantly male lens, you know, male-centric focus. So the person who coined the term finger blasting did not have a vagina. Because if you have a vagina and you hear the term finger blasting, you want to cross your legs. The person who coined the term getting her ass railed never got his ass railed. You know, pounding, banging, slamming, wrecking, destroying, all terms created by the people who did not possess the soft internal tissue to which those things are being done.

27:21So as I said, you know, we tag our videos completely differently from the way you see porn videos. You know, we use tags like juicy, succulent. Our tag for oral is downtown. Our tag for anal is deliberately derived from the recipient's experience of anal. We tag our anal sex videos. Oh, oh, oh, hey now. Why are you doing this? Because we want you to take this language and use it beyond that platform in the real world. You know, it's language you can use to talk about sex without being embarrassed of what's coming out of your mouth or worrying about being overheard. And it's language you can use to talk about what you want to do in bed in a celebratory, positive and gender equal way.

28:01And so we are using our language to reshape how people think about sex. And one of the ways we're doing that is, you know, as you've said, in porn, you know, porn teaches men that, you know, sex is entirely dick centric. It's all about how big it is, how hard it is, how long you keep that. In the real world, men are frequently semi-erect or not erect because that's just how things happen in real life. And so we have a tag for those of our videos on Make Love Not Corn where, you know, the man is not erect or semi-erect. And that tag is derived from the world of ice cream. We tag those videos soft serves because soft serves are yummy and delicious.

28:43Elliott:I mean, I love this. I love that you have a different language to try and reframe the way that we think about porn because I mean that not only as you said with your mission to end rape culture it makes you think about sex in an entirely different way but also nobody as you say nobody wants to be finger blasted and so by reframing it it means everybody's going to be having better sex as well in the long run. I'll give another example of um of our tagging so when we began building Make Love Up when I said to my team I was to come up with a term for the female version of blowjob because funnilingus doesn't hack it okay oral sex and and the reason that it's important is because you know i said i want it to be as quick easy and simple to say as blowjob because when something is quick easy and simple to say it gets said a lot more gets asked for a lot more and it happens a lot more so our tag for the female version of blowjob is lick job and our lick job yeah and and our lick job videos are very popular because this is the real world okay as my friend sex nerd santa likes to say if your eyebrows aren't wet you're not doing it right yeah and so you can learn a lot from our lick job videos do a lick job that is that's the right term cindy you said something earlier around women love sex just as much as men do and I feel like amongst young boys there is the idea that like sex is something that you get and actually it's the the boy's pleasure and the boy's thing to access and win if you like and the women give it up and so can you just talk more about that because I think helping young boys to understand that women enjoy sex as well I think would really help them to approach it in a different way where it's a mutual thing rather than something that I've got to obtain.

30:39No, you're absolutely right, Elliot. And, you know, make love not porn, you see equality in action. You see orgasm equality in action. I've talked about, you know, how we help boys and men with make love porn. How we help girls and women is we give women sexual agency. Okay. In fact, One woman left a comment on one of our videos saying, you know, after seeing this video, I felt more enabled and empowered in my own sexual agency. Thank you for this gift. And so what boys and men see is women having agency in sex, demonstrating they get just as much pleasure out of it. You know, they see equality in action.

31:23And by the way, obviously, again, you know, we have, as I say, you know, a ton of like queer videos as well as straight videos. But, you know, talking in a straight context, they see the power of women having just as good a time as men and men absolutely being there to ensure that women have a good time. And, you know, I'll give you one example. So a couple wrote to us, and this is some years ago, and this is interesting too, because as a platform that showcases real world sex lives, we showcase how real world people manage their sex lives through real world health conditions. You know, so we have people who are cancer survivors, you know, menopause, etc.

32:05Anyway, this couple wrote to us, they said they've been happily married for 20 years. The husband was sadly diagnosed with prostate cancer. You know, they operated chemo cancer free, but erectile dysfunction had resulted. And they've had a very active sex life. This made them very unhappy. They went to see a therapist who said there's this platform called Make Love Not Porn. So they wrote to us and went, oh, my God, you know, this was incredible. And what I found fascinating when they wrote this very long email and they said our sex life is now even better than it was before the operation. I suspect that was because at Make Love Not Porn, we show you all the wonderful ways you can enjoy yourselves that do not involve penetrative sex.

32:47And that actually needs to be represented. You know, I said, you know, real world lick jobs, giving real world pleasure to real world women. All the ways you can use your hands and your thumbs and fingers and your mouth and so on. and that also is a very important part of, you know, it's not all about you, the boy or the man. And I say that because, you know, I date, my number one criteria is that they have to be a very nice person. I've great radar for very nice people. I date the men I date in an atmosphere of mutual trust, respect, affection like him. And nevertheless, when we get into the bedroom, I can see them modeling the body language that says my dick is the center of the universe because that is what they have unconsciously internalized to growing up with male lens, male-centric porn.

33:33And so, as I said, we showcase female agency in sex. We give women agency. And we show boys and men what a wonderful thing that is. When you both want it equally, you're both having an equally good time. You know, and here are all the many ways in which you can ensure that is the case. Love that.

33:58you thought this was your run club era turns out it was more of a thinking about run club era the good news someone's marathon training is about to start sell your workout gear on depop just snap a few photos and we'll take care of the rest they get their race day fit and you get a pay out for trying. Someone on Depop wants what you've got. Start selling now. Depop, where taste recognizes taste.

34:29Elliott:I would really like to talk to you about strangulation because there's been some shocking research out recently about the impact strangulation has on the brain. And we know that as little as 4.4 pounds of pressure, so that's the force it takes to open a can of coke, can block the jugular veins, causing blood to pool in the brain. And loss of consciousness is possible in as little as four to 10 seconds. Brain damage can happen in minutes during strangulation. Strangulation is common now amongst young people having sex. It wasn't when I started having sex when I was younger at all. I don't remember anybody trying to strangle me clearly strangulation has become common as a direct result of porn and it's about 50 percent of 16 and 17 year olds have experienced strangulation during sex and i will just be clear there is no safe way to strangle somebody which people believe lots of young people believe that there is a safe way to do it i actually had a conversation about strangulation sex with my hairdresser recently who said but they don't know what they're doing like um as if you know there is a safe way to strangle somebody during sex there is no safe way to do this the government has committed to making it illegal to show strangulation or suffocation in online pornography is that it Cindy is job done or is there more that we need to be doing so um I mean first of all and by the way Jolie um you know on this as with everything else for me I'm not porn I am my own research lab.

36:04You know, I have been non-consensually strangled in bed by someone who obviously thought that I would enjoy that, which I theoretically do not, and found it extremely unnerving as an experience. Here's what's completely missing from the public discourse in this at the moment. The issue is not banning potentially harmful sexual practices and porn. The issue is showcasing, celebrating, publicizing wonderful, healthy, fabulous, loving practices in real world sex. And, you know, this is why I'm so frustrated, because I and my tiny team have fought a battle every single day for the past nearly 17 years, not even to grow MakeLoveNotPorn just to keep it going.

36:45Basically, because every piece of business infrastructure other tech startups take for granted, we can't. The small print always says no adult content. And this applies to every area of the business. I cannot get funded. I can't get banked. I can't promote MakeLoveNotPorn. You know, I have huge issues accepting payments. What needs to happen is that, I mean, quite frankly, the UK government needs to make a whacking great grant to MakeLoveNotPorn and MakeLoveNotPorn.Academy to counter this. Investors need to get behind us. Philanthropists need to donate money to us. The world needs to see how wonderful it is to MakeLoveNotPorn.

37:22And that is completely missing from the discourse. As I said earlier, we're doing something really powerful and transformative to MakeLovePorn. we are reinventing sexual aspiration. We are making people see that this is how to be great in bed the real world sex way. I've said for nearly 17 years now, the issue isn't porn. The issue is we do not talk about sex in the real world, openly and honestly. We don't advocate that. Because if we did, amongst a whole host of other benefits, people would then be able to bring a real world mindset to the viewing of what is performative produced entertainment.

37:59Now, we're talking about a very large issue with many nuances. But, you know, I will just say that many things are laid at Corn's door that should be laid at societies. It is actually not Corn's job to educate. It is societies. And when you educate them as early in age as possible, then people are able to look at constructed entertainment and go, this is not the real world. That is not something anybody should be doing in practice. it's precisely because of the lack of what is so badly needed a real world counterpoint showing you what is great sex in the real world and that is what we are but until we get the funding we need and the support we need you know we cannot scale to be the solution to all of this

38:45Elliott:that I know we can be. Is there a possibility for people to invest in Make Love Not Porn right now? Absolutely. You know, I've been trying to raise funding for 17 years. So investors, come on in. Also, we have a non-profit vehicle. We have a partnership with a non-profit called Inspire Access, which enables us to take philanthropic capital. So philanthropists, we can take taxed up donations, donor advised funds, foundation grants. But also, you know, I would love the UK government to basically give us a grant to MakeLoveNotPorn and importantly, MakeLoveNotPorn.academy, which is our zero to 18 and beyond sex education extension of everything.

39:25Elliott:Have you had any conversations with the British government? Has anybody approached you? Have you had any good chats? So last year, Baroness Gabby Burton interviewed me for the UK Government Independent Porn Review Commission. And Baroness Burton published her report back at the start of this year. And she says two very important things in that report for us. The first is that she talks about how uniquely Make Love Not Porn operates, the way I design it through the female lens to be the safest place on the internet, and says, as the founder has told me, they faced a host of business obstacles. You know, investors should be investing in what we're doing.

40:05And separately elsewhere, in the report, she says, you know, parents and schools need education to be able to teach children to be porn literate, to educate about sex in the real world. And there are various initiatives, but there is no one-stop shop, one central hub for all of this. And that is exactly what I designed Make Love Not Corn Academy to be. And I was really hopeful that that report would be a game changer for us. But unfortunately, both of those items are buried in a very dense, several hundred page report that therefore nobody read unless it was their job to read. And, you know, the media honed in on the more sensationalized aspects of it.

40:47And so I really appreciate Baroness Burton endorsing what we're doing and actually setting up a perfect opening for the market opportunity to make Love Lockdown Dock Academy. But nothing's happened as a result.

41:00Elliott:We need to get Bridget Phillipson on this, the education secretary. They have, as you will know, part of the curriculum is to teach misogyny in schools and what that actually will look like. I don't think any of us really know, but it feels to me like the end goal for teaching misogyny in schools is the end goal of Make Love Not Porn. And so they could achieve their end goal very easily by linking up with you and the work that you're doing. Parents and teachers began reaching out to me from day one of Make Love Not Porn. And they begged me for the zero to 18 and beyond sex education expansion of what we do.

41:34So 10 years ago, I came up with the idea for Make Love Not Porn.academy. Educational technology, edtech, is exploding as a sector, not in this area. So I conceived MakeLoveNotPorn.Academy to be a global aggregator hub for the best of the world's sex education content that is already out there, but is being blocked, censored and deplatformed everywhere, literally as we speak. So our mission with MakeLoveNotPorn.Academy is to organize the world's sex education information to make it universally accessible and useful. That is a deliberate paraphrase of Google's original mission statement, organize the world's information to make it universal assessment useful, because today in this area, Google is not doing that.

42:15The algorithm itself is biased. It's censoring. Parents, teachers tell me they cannot find the resources they need when they search for them. So we are building the Google of sex ed. And I'm delighted to be having this conversation with you today because, and this is a bit of an exclusive for you, we have just taken a very bare bones, what the tech world calls minimum viable product version of MakeLoveNotPorn.Academy live in public beta. And so I would love you to share the link to it when this show goes up. I had this idea 10 years ago because that's how long investors have refused to fund it, even when it's to do with education.

42:58I managed to raise a small amount of equity crowdfunding last year. I didn't hit my goal, but I raised a small amount, which enabled us to design and build the academy. And so it is literally very bare bones. We are still publishing educators and content, but we have taken it live very quietly under the radar for real world testing. and so I'm sharing this with you now because I would love you guys to check it out I would love our listeners to check it out this is the opportunity to be a boy audience to be our real world testers in real time please go to makelovenotporn.academy you know see what you think, give us your feedback and also by the way please support us we have a membership model a bit like the museum model it's completely free to access everybody it's entirely safe for work Um, we operate our 100 % human curation models we do with MakeLoveNotPorn, humanize, vet, every educator, every piece of content.

43:58Um, but you can become a member for just a hundred dollars a year. Um, that's about sort of 75 quid, I think. Um, and that will help support us and help me and my tiny team operate MakeLoveNotPorn.academy because, you know, as I say, while investors are not funding us in the way that we need, we need your help to be able to continue to operate this.

44:19Elliott:Well, I'll be signing up. I would encourage everybody to do the same. I think that sounds absolutely brilliant and exactly what is needed and also feels very much to me like school, something schools should really be investing in as well. Absolutely. And in fact, on the Academy, you know, we have a ton of resources for parents, for children, young people. We also have a ton of educators who have created brilliant, you know, lesson plans, curriculum for schools, programmes for schools. And again, as I say, We are still in the process of getting all these educators onto the platform. So, you know, not everything is there as yet.

44:54We're loading it all on, literally, as we speak. But this is designed to be a resource for schools. And especially, by the way, because, you know, people keeping sex ed out of schools, they don't know what it would be like if they allowed it in. They just say we're really bad. In their heads, they have this abstract concept, Solomon Gamora will ensue. When you look at the academy, you can see at a glance the best of the world sex education all in one place. You can see for yourself how brilliant, informative, educational, healthy, non-threatening it is. And you can search it by age-appropriateness, cultural sensibility, but also, but importantly, by personal comfort level.

45:36We've just brought this together. You decide. You pick and choose what's right for your classroom, your school, your family. that's when we think we can help get more sex editor schools but we would really like it to

45:50Elliott:come from a government level I would say as well because when my kids were in primary school we lived in Manchester and the primary school they went to was one of the main schools in Manchester that was rebelling against sex education being taught at school and I one morning dropped my children off at school and there were tv cameras outside and they wanted to interview people about whether it was okay to talk about sex in primary school and every parent said no it's not okay to talk about sex in primary school apart from me and I went to a meeting with the school and I there must have been 120 parents there I was one of five parents that were there to defend sex education being taught in primary schools so it feels very much to me like some parents have a natural instinct to say no that should never happen in schools it should happen at home even though it's not happening at home and until the government gets involved and says no this is really important and schools should be engaging in this inevitably schools are going to really struggle to be able to have that sort of content in in the classroom and I think what where where make a porn dot academy can help with that julia's um often a parent has no idea what sex education actually means so that's why they're you know um and if you just browse the academy you can see and and this is one of the things i'm very keen to bring to the world because i also had the idea of the academy because i both have a network of brilliant sex educator friends all around the world who face all the same challenges we do their content gets blocked on facebook instagram tiktok their accounts get suspended they can't permit themselves and we have i mean for example we have a ton of brilliant Gen Z educators who want to help their own generation grow up, educate about all of this.

47:36And they are bringing such innovative, creative, imaginative, colourful, vibrant ways to education that people really need to see what is happening in sex education, a way that will reassure them. There are so many different approaches to choose from. And they are all, again, we vetted everything on the academy personally. This is all healthy and helpful and informative and non-explicit. Again, everything is safe for work. You know, on the academy, age appropriateness is basically about who that educator is targeting. You know, so if it's over 18 content, you know, 12-year-old boys, feel free to get bored by reading about the menopause.

48:18I think if 12-year-old boys read about the menopause to realize what's going on with mom, you know, but literally everything is, everything is okay for everyone to access, essentially. And I'm hoping that, as I say, again, we're tiny, we're sort of in previews at the moment to use the Broadway Western model. But I'm hoping that as we build and grow, people will see the amazing breadth of what is happening out there in sex education that is so helpful, so interesting, and not the boogeyman of your imagination when you can't see what it actually looks like. I think that's brilliant. I think, I don't know the stats, you may know the amount of young people that don't have any kind of sex education talks with their parents at all.

48:58I think mine was use a condom. I don't want to be a grandma. And I think a lot of the barrier and blockers is just confidence as parents in what to say, what is age appropriate. So I think having a resource where it's professionals, it's been vetted, it's people who know what they're talking about. for me personally as someone who does not feel super comfortable talking about sex with my children my eldest is 10 and we're very aware it's something we need to start doing more of so I will be going on that website and learning for myself. Excellent and thank you for the

49:31Elliott:exclusive on it as well Cindy I want to briefly talk to you about the fact that younger adults and adolescents are having less sex than they used to they're actually masturbating less than they're used to and we also know that young people young men are slowly seeming to get AI girlfriends and friends as well replacing that for real world relationships what do you think is going on there and are we sort of sleepwalking into the end of human intimacy so this is um again precisely what I designed um the academy to tackle Julie because I mentioned earlier that I've you know, the year's been exhorting parents to talk to their children about sex as early as possible.

50:17I've also encouraged parents to talk to their children about love as early as possible. And the reason for that is that love is such a foundational construct in our society. We leave it to popular culture to define. Don't do that. Because to your point today, children are growing up as much through screens as IRL they are communicating predominantly through screens which makes IRL social interactions awkward and anxiety inducing they're stuck across porn at very early ages they are to your point having romantic and sexual relationships with AI chatbots AI chatbot usage is exploding amongst young people where those relationships are completely friction-free play back exactly what you want to here, what is getting lost in all of this is the joy, the messiness, the friction, the heartbreak, the connection, the wonder of first love.

51:12And so we must educate children about love. Make Love Not Porn is love in action. Make Love Not Porn Academy is education through love because that is the framework we bring to it. There's a reason our name is Make Love Not Porn. And so the Academy has decided to contextualize sex education in education about love, about dating, about intimacy, relationships, because everybody wants love. You know, I had a wonderful event earlier this year. There was an organization here in the U.S. called the National League of Young Men. It's a nationwide nonprofit with chapters all over the country. It's an organization for mothers and their high school teenage teenage sons.

51:57and the mothers run each chapter and they schedule programming designed to bring their sons up to be fine upstanding members of and leaders in the community huge kudos to the mothers of the Greenwich Connecticut chapter who earlier this year invited me out to Greenwich to talk to 50 teenage boys about Make Love Not Porn and I love the way they did it because um you know that um we had it at one of their homes at a very large living area they put all the boys and me in it they fed the boys thoroughly first lots of pizza good move um and then they said to the boys okay boys we are now closing the doors we're going to another corner of the house we know nothing we hear nothing this is your chance to be alone with Cindy and ask anything you want make the most of it and so I you know gave him a short presentation about make love not porn why we exist you know what we're doing then I opened it up to Q &A and of course these are teenage boys first of all, deathly silence.

52:54Then one boy asked a question, another one asked, and then the floodgates opened. And we had the most amazing free and frank Q &A session. They were adorable. And they wanted to know about girls and dating and what do girls really like and how to make love not porn. I promise you, everybody wants love, intimacy, human connection. And it's so important that you know we educate in that context we can absolutely change the world through sex if we educate about it through love and that's what you know Makeup Porn and Makeup Porn Academy are both dedicated to doing.

53:31Elliott:I mean what an experience having Cindy Gallop come and talk to you as a teenage boy and you have her to yourself to ask anything you want. There is one other thing I really have to talk to you about as well while I have you, biased algorithms. Oh my god, This is something I've recently become very aware of. And you started this movement of pointing out to people how biased algorithms can be and showing how it works on LinkedIn. And we've now seen, certainly I've seen over the last few weeks, that women are changing their profiles to male profiles in their droves, changing their gender on LinkedIn in their droves.

54:08Elliott:And they're seeing their impressions and their reach increase, not just by a small amount, but, you know, 200 to 800 % increase. It's enormous. Do you think LinkedIn and other social media platforms and the tech giants will ever going to amend these very sexist algorithms? Or are women just going to have to pretend to be men for the rest of eternity to get anywhere? So we have to make them, is the answer to that, Julie. and we have to make them because biased sexist misogynistic algorithms

54:48are enormously harmful and damaging to women and because of that they are also harmful and damaging to men and you know just for our listeners you know as Julie observed I began calling this out on LinkedIn because I've been on LinkedIn for 20 years it's worked brilliantly for my business and I noticed early this year that there'd been algorithm change and my reach had fallen off a cliff I have over 140 ,000 followers on LinkedIn I've hit my LinkedIn connection limit of 30 ,000 connections didn't even realize there was a limit till I hit it I currently have over 1700 people on my connection weakness that I can't accept because LinkedIn makes it very difficult to cull you know build connections and my posts average a few hundred impressions each and the the the really harmful thing about that is algorithmic suppression of women's voices equals economic oppression of women i'm a founder i'm building make love not porn and making porn academy and i cannot get the word out about my businesses to get the support i need even when as you've heard they are something parents and teachers desperately want and want to make use of.

55:59And this is not just me, other friends of mine, women business owners, you know, we've seen our businesses take a hit because we don't have a visibility. So right now we are absolutely protesting. And by the way, I've tried to have this conversation with LinkedIn and they've went out of it. So we have a number of us coming at this from many different angles. My friend, Jane Evans, also a founder, also found her reach tanking with her followers. So she and I have just launched a petition on change.org. I will drop the link calling for LinkedIn to do a number of things for fairness in the feed, for fairness of visibility.

56:35And by the way, an important technical point to make is LinkedIn is not necessarily doing this deliberately, but when you have an algorithm that is being trained on what has been historically biased, and for LinkedIn, it's business world and business people are predominantly male and white, and everything I'm talking about is even worse for black and of color, women and men as well, then you are basically taking away visibility for jobs, for promotions, for value, for events, hiring for businesses. And that's a huge problem. And so we absolutely cannot let this happen. We have to make them address this.

57:17And I encourage everyone to, if you can share the change.org petition, that that'd be fantastic because we are talking about something very very fundamental to all of our livelihood all of our economic health and applies as much to men as it does to women because we are we are more social collectors than men we drive the growth of these platforms and when we are relegated men and businesses don't benefit either and i've seen women saying when they

57:45Elliott:changed their gender to being a man they got different jobs sent to them as well so it wasn't just about the reach they were getting jobs sent to them that were of a higher salary a higher status than they had done previously which exactly yep absolutely terrifying thank you for lead for identifying it for leading the movement on that for starting the petition they'll definitely be sharing that to end i don't want you to leave us ever but i know you have things to do if you knew there were lots of boys listening right now. If you could say one unfiltered truth to them, the thing that you think no one else is saying to them, what would it be?

58:24I would say, boys, I know you want to be loved and you absolutely can be loved and you will be loved. You need to be aware that that will come from making genuine, intimate human connections with whatever gender you want to be loved by. And that can only happen when you are you and you want to connect as you. Don't be influenced by what you see from Andrew Tate. Don't be influenced by what you see in porn. Be yourself because that's how people respond to you and that's how you will find love. And love comes from being open, being vulnerable, being willing to open up to somebody let them know how much you like them sometimes that'll go well sometimes it won't it doesn't matter you know life is about absolutely taking a shot because you never want to think i wish i'd done that when you didn't but but you will absolutely be loved um be open to loving and being loved cindy gallop you are a bloody hero

From the publisher

Joeli and Elliott are joined by the inimitable Cindy Gallop to discuss her ground breaking work with Make Love Not Porn, addressing the impact of pornography on societal expectations and relationships. She describes the importance of open conversations about sex and love, particularly in educating children and young adults and the amazing results she’s seen as a direct result of her work. They also touch on the challenges of funding and support for sex education initiatives, the decline of intimacy among young people, and the need for a cultural shift in how we talk about sex and relationships.

Be warned – this is a no holds barred conversation with swearing et al.
