I'm Mark Salisanders, co-founder of Filtered.com, a learning technology business and author of TimeLoxing. In my latest Harvard Business Review article, I analyzed thousands of real conversations from Reddit, Quora and other forums to uncover how people are actually using generative AI in 2025.

1:16So forget the marketing buzz. The number one use case for AI in 2025 is not coding. It's not writing emails. It's not any kind of summarization. is therapy and companionship. Therapy was already a rising use case in 2024 and in 2025 it takes the top spot. People are turning to AI to talk through trauma, loneliness, mental health struggles in a space that's always available, non-judgmental and more accessible than traditional therapy. Number two, organizing my life. This use case didn't even rank last year, now it's the highest new entry in the top five. People are using AI to manage calendars, build routines, make shopping lists and bring more structure to their lives.

1:53In the number three spot is another new addition, finding purpose. Users are asking AI to help define their values, set goals and reflect on what matters most. Number four, enhanced learning. AI is a go-to study partner, helping people understand complex topics, fill in gaps from online courses and in some cases learn more deeply. It's enhancing our own intelligence. Number five, code generation for professionals. Developers are still using AI to automate repetitive coding tasks, solve programming challenges, and move faster in their workflows.

2:30In 2024, people used AI much more for technical assistance, fixing problems, writing code, and automating tasks. In 2025, it's been more about emotional connection, life structure, and personal growth. To explore the top 100 use cases, read my article on hbr.org.
