In short

Turning the “inner critic” from an enemy into an ally by understanding its origin and leading it with compassion.

Guest backgrounds

Ron Carucci, co-founder and managing partner at Navalent; leadership transformation advisor; author of an Inner Critic piece in Harvard Business Review.

Key claims

The harsh voice usually tries to protect you from rejection, embarrassment, or failure; resisting or shutting it down often makes people feel worse. Techniques: write the critic’s biography (first moment, who it sounds like), name it (e.g., “enforcer” or “worried younger me”), and respond with “I hear you, but I’ve got this.” Reframe self-talk from “I’m a fraud” to “this is hard and I care deeply; I’m still worthy of kindness.”

Notable examples

preparing well and staying present; using compassionate leadership to change the critic’s tone over time.

And I recently wrote about something we all wrestle with in the Harvard Business Review, our inner critic.

1:21We've been told to resist or shut down that harsh inner voice, but most people find when that doesn't work, they feel even worse. Instead of banishing your inner critic, what if you trained it to become your ally? That voice came from somewhere, maybe a parent or a teacher or early life moment. Try writing its biography. Name the moment you first heard it. Whose voice does it sound like? By tracing its origin, you start to reclaim authorship over the narrative playing out in your mind. It may sound like a harsh voice, but your inner critic is trying to protect you from rejection, embarrassment, or failure, try responding, I hear you, but I've got this.

2:02Let's do this differently this time. Give your inner critic a name. Literally, the enforcer or worried younger me. Invited to speak to you in ways that are helpful and harmful. Instead of, I'm such a fraud, try, this is hard and I care deeply. I'm still worthy of kindness. Your inner critic, it's a scared part of you that needs better leadership. Lead it with compassion. Trade, you'll blow this for this matters. Let's prepare well and stay present. Over time, that shift in tone changes everything. Want to go deeper? Head to hbr.org and read my article.
