I am here to answer your toughest leadership questions in one minute or less. I'm newer to my organization and I've always been pretty introverted. I know that leaders need to be able to speak up, but I really struggle with it. Are there any other ways I can show I'm doing a good job and might be leadership material besides, you know, taking public speaking classes?
1:17So as someone who is also a diehard introvert, I'm here to tell you there are many ways you can show the value that you bring to the table as a leader besides being an extrovert. One of the things that I want you to be thinking about, first of all, is what is your definition of being introverted? Being introverted does not mean an inability to speak up nor a desire not to speak up. I think what you need to focus on is what are ways that you can speak up, that you can participate, that you can contribute. Even let's get rid of the term speaking up, that you can contribute your ideas, your suggestions, your recommendations, your perspective, your point of view.
1:54What are ways that you can do that in a way that's comfortable for you? So tactically, what might that look like? Is it that you are better off having one-on-one meetings with people before you have group meetings? Is it that you go to your boss and you say, hey, could you give me a piece of the agenda to lead? Those are just two examples. The key here is figuring out what are ways that you can make your voice heard and at the table in a way that's going to feel authentic and genuine and comfortable for you. Not the case of not speaking up at all.
