In short
How to respond when good people are leaving a work team and the team is shrinking.
Guest backgrounds
No guests are named; the host answers a listener’s leadership question in “one minute or less.”
Key claims
Ask departing employees directly what’s driving their exit, look beyond pay grade, and focus on what you can control. The episode argues most people don’t leave solely for compensation; research cited says the primary reason is their boss/management. Motivators emphasized are autonomy, mastery, and purpose (attributed to Dan Pink).
Notable examples
The listener’s company lost three top team members to better offers; the recommended action is to investigate management and employee motivations.

And is there anything you can do about it? I am here to answer your toughest leadership questions in one minute or less. Lately, my company seems to be bleeding talent. In the last few months, we've lost three of my best team members, all to companies making better offers. I'm doing everything I can do to keep people happy and engaged, but there are a lot of things beyond my pay grade that I can't control.
1:17Is there anything I can do to keep us from losing all this great talent? Okay. So first of all, kudos to you that you are engaged in not only retaining talent, but making sure that they stay engaged and they are feeling like they want to be there. I have a really quick question for you. Have you asked them, what is it that's causing them to leave? I think you have to go to the source and really try to understand beyond the surface level, what is it that is making them want to leave this organization? And then make a determination, as you said, around what's in your control. Now, there's also something very interesting here.
1:53Most people think that individuals leave a job purely because of compensation. The research shows the reason why most people leave a job is because of their boss. So you need to also check how they're being managed, whether it's by you or by others. And what motivates people in a job are really things like autonomy, mastery, and purpose, which Dan Pink wrote about. Really great tips. So there are things over and beyond compensation and even title that you can do to make people want to feel like they want to stay at their organization. Still waiting in line? Again? That's time you'll never get back.
