In short
Sabbaticals for Beginners—why long breaks from work (typically 3 months to a year) help, how long it takes to truly disconnect (up to 8 weeks), who takes them, and barriers plus how to request one.
Guest backgrounds
DJ Dodonna, Harvard Business School (researcher/analyst) who synthesizes research and interviews with 250+ sabbatical takers.
Key claims
Sabbaticals are valuable across roles and industries, not just academics; about two-thirds are driven by major life events (loss, health issues, burnout). Full disconnection requires boundaries, including stepping away from email and workplace. Accessibility is limited because paid leave is rare; most takers are financially secure.
Notable examples
“Achiever” (writing a book), “Explorer” (new experiences/career paths), “Burned out” (recovery from stress). Advice includes asking for unpaid leave, checking if others have done it, planning finances, and addressing identity/judgment concerns.

Here's a quick crash course based on research and interviews with over 250 people who have taken one.
1:04It's a long break from work, usually three months to a year. It can take up to eight weeks to truly disconnect, so stepping away completely and ideally traveling helps. Not just academics. Workers, managers, and executives across industries actually take sabbaticals too. For two-thirds of people who have taken sabbaticals, it's not just a choice. Major life events like loss, health issues, or burnout push them to take the leap. Sabbaticals can be great, but they're not always accessible. Few companies offer paid leave, so most sabbatical takers are financially secure enough to fund their time off.
1:43The achiever, this person uses their break for a big goal, like writing a book. The explorer. This person uses that time to try new experiences, maybe even new career paths. The burned out. This person steps away from work to recover from stress and exhaustion. Full disconnection is key. So that means setting boundaries and stepping away completely from your work, including email. Your place of work. If your company doesn't offer sabbaticals, you can still ask for unpaid leave. If you're nervous to approach your manager, ask around and see if anyone's done it before. Money. Planning ahead financially can make a sabbatical more feasible.
2:21Self-worth. If your work is a big part of your identity, a sabbatical might feel hard at first. Shifting to a new identity or embracing other parts of your identity can be helpful. Judgment. Worrying how others perceive you taking a long break is totally normal, but sabbaticals are becoming more accepted, even by hiring managers. Have no fear.
