In short

A one-minute leadership Q&A on how to prove you’re ready for a promotion when your boss seems to treat you like “a little kid.”

Guest backgrounds

No named guests; the host answers the question.

Key claims

Don’t assume you’re being treated like a child—verify what’s actually happening and how subjective that label is. Focus on two factors: current performance (are you knocking it out in your current role?) and future potential (identify gaps for the role you want). Ask for feedback tied to the next-level job, not just feedback on what you’re doing now.

Notable examples

The host contrasts feedback about current tasks versus performance against the target role.

I am here to answer your toughest leadership questions in one minute or less. I've always been a bit of an overachiever and moved up the ranks in my company super quickly in my 20s. I'm always ready for the next step and I'm hoping for a big lift up to the VP level.

1:13But my boss, even though they say I'm great, keeps treating me kind of like a little kid. How do I prove that I'm ready for the next level of leadership? Okay. So first of all, sounds like you are very ambitious, which I love. I'm really curious about your feeling like you're being treated like a little kid because there's such a, there's such huge subjectivity around what that means. And I would ask you to check yourself on that in terms of, are you truly being treated like a little kid before labeling it as such? Your boss is treating you in the way that your boss is treating you. And that's what you need to examine.

1:50Now, when it comes to moving forward, I think there's two things that you need to pay attention to. What is your current performance and what is your future potential? You need to ascertain that you actually are knocking out of the park your current job and then start thinking about what is it that you are trying to get ready for and ask for feedback as it relates to that future potential. Because it Sounds like you're getting feedback in terms of what you're doing now. What I'm interested in is how are you performing against the actual role that you want to be in? And where do you have gaps that you can close and then start working on closing those gaps?
