Key claims

(1) Schedule intentional connection activities at times that suit most team members; a shared in-person week can strengthen virtual team growth. (2) Use virtual games beyond trivia/bingo—choose critical-thinking scenarios (e.g., surviving a moon crash, an arctic expedition) to promote teamwork and strategic thinking. (3) In recurring meetings, reserve early minutes for casual personal conversation.

Notable examples

group yoga, one-on-one project meetings, virtual critical-thinking games, and first-few-minutes check-ins.

It is possible, but it's going to take a little more effort. So here are three tips from our authors. This can happen anytime that works best for the majority of your team members. It can include things like one-on-one meetings to talk about projects or even activities like group yoga sessions.

1:17The positive memories from that one week can create a really solid foundation for your virtual team to grow from. So if you want people to bond, you might try to get them all together and play a virtual game. But think beyond things like bingo or trivia. Instead, consider critical thinking games that present some kind of unusual problem, like surviving a moon crash or going on an arctic expedition. These kind of exercises allow people to really work together and also practice strategic thinking skills. So this one is pretty simple, but if you have a weekly or repeating team meeting, just reserve the first few minutes for casual conversation.

1:54It's a great time for your virtual team members to get to know one another on a more personal level and talk about their interests and lives outside of work.
